The mining and milling of Uranium ore is one of the most polluting and environmentally destructive aspects of any industrial process.

It is also associated with carbon costs both in the extraction of Uranium ore and the decommissioning of mine and milling sites. Time and again cost effectiveness calculations show that compared to gas, oil, coal, wind and solar powered electricity generation, nuclear power is the most expensive method for producing electricity and is only viable because of large tax payers subsidies.

Local History Matters

2019 has been a busy year for K C Fairs and Events, as well as organising the two successful Beccles Street Markets held in the town centre in May and August they took over the running of the Loddon Antiques & Collectors Fair at the beginning of the year.

Held in the Jubilee Hall in George Lane, the Loddon Antiques & Collectors Fair has been relaunched as a good quality antiques fair. With forty well established dealers selling a variety of antiques and collectables it has quickly become a ‘not to be missed’ event in the collectors diary. The venue has free parking with more available off site and in the centre of Loddon itself. It also boasts a cafe, which serves homemade refreshments throughout the day. The next Fair at Loddon will be on Sunday 29th September 9-4pm The Beccles Street Market, in it’s tenth year, plays host to a hundred general and specialist dealers selling a wide range of good quality antiques and collectables. If you want it, then you are sure to find it at the market! The August market on the 11th August with be the twentieth market that KC Fairs & Events have organised and quite a milestone for them.First class local catering is also incorporated into the market, including a hog roast, local artisan street food and ice cream. Remnants of a long lost hospital in the grounds of Norwich Cathedral

I

n the last edition of Triangle we explored the beauties of the herb garden adjacent to Norwich Cathedral and how the mediaeval use of herbs greatly improved the life style and health of the monks. As mentioned previously, the original herb garden of the monastery is now lost under a car park to the south of the cloister buildings.

It is here on that very lost site that we can still find extant remains of another very important building – the monks’ Infirmary, or, hospital. If you go into the Lower Close car park six stone pillars will be found standing in splendid isolation – yet probably surrounded by cars! These columns are all that is left of the monks’ hospital building and you’ll need to get your imaginations working overtime to appreciate that there would have been beds between the pillars where sick monks would have been nursed back to health using herbal remedies concocted from the plants in the herb garden. The columns are very ancient and date back to the early twelfth century. The picture above will give you a very good idea of what to look for if you go searching for the ancient hospital site. It probably functioned as intended until early May 1538 when the monastery was surrendered to the Crown when King

Henry VIII disestablished the cathedral site.

Norwich Cathedral and its monastery was the very first site to be ‘dissolved’ by the king. In effect he stopped its association with Roman Catholicism and turned it into a member-church of his new Church of England Foundation. It was no accident that the monastery hospital was situated so far from the main cloister and cathedral buildings – having a safe degree of isolation was obviously important if there were serious outbreaks of fever etc. In fact, if you leave the cloister by the south-east exit you will have to pass through a lobby that has come to be known as the ‘dark entry’ and here there were originally doors acting to segregate the main buildings and walkways from the hospital area, to safeguard against any spread of disease. The small window by the doorway may well have functioned as a viewpoint for a monk who kept guard at this portal.

When you are next in the vicinity of the cathedral you may care to walk down to the lower car park by the Refectory Café and locate the columns and see for yourself where mediaeval monks once practised their state-of-the-art herbal healing vocation.

Woodgate Nursery annual charity garden show raises over three thousand pounds for local charities

A Bee themed garden, complete with hexagonal shelves and vertical wall planting, won this year’s public vote at the Woodgate Nursery Charity Garden show in Aylsham.

The ‘Bee Happy’ Garden was designed by Susannah Black Garden Design and built by IFC Landscapes. Woodgate Nursery came second with their beach inspired garden, including crab pots and rusty anchors.

Amongst the highlights of the weekend included some outstanding show gardens, a Saxon and Viking re-enactment group, music by the Aylsham Brass Band and local ironmongers and willow weavers in action.

The two day event raised £3123, which will be shared out between the two local charities of the Aylsham Scouts and the Aylsham Roman Project.

Woodgate Nursery and Rusty Robot Occasions would like to thank everyone who visited the show and helped them to raise so much for their chosen charities.

Peter Purdy, owner of Woodgate Nursery, commented, ‘The show just gets better and bigger every year with so much variety the show is a great day out for keen gardeners and families alike. I would especially like to thank all the exhibitors who put in a lot of hard work and really do make the Woodgate Garden Show so enjoyable. I’m already looking forward to 2020!’

Suffolk businesses celebrated for reducing carbon emissions

A

n event held at one of Suffolk’s most sustainable business centres, celebrated the carbon reduction efforts of over 400 Suffolk and Norfolk businesses (4 July 2019).

Since their launch in 2010, Suffolk Carbon Charter awards have been presented to hundreds of businesses who show commitment to reducing their carbon emissions, as part of Suffolk’s ambitions for Creating the Greenest County.

Lord Deben, founder of Suffolk’s Creating the Greenest County partnership in 2007, was a guest speaker at the event held at Freckenham-based property developers, Woolley. As Chairman of the UK’s independent Committee on Climate Change, member of the House of Lords and former Member of Parliament for Suffolk Coastal, he stressed the importance of local action: “Our understanding of climate change brings a responsibility to act. The report of the Committee on Climate Change has shown that net zero carbon is achievable and affordable. Now that we have that knowledge, the task is to act on it. National plans and international agreements are important, but that action will largely happen locally, in businesses and communities like this one.”

The partnership continues to work with local communities and businesses to help realise the environmental and economic benefits of reducing energy consumption, adapting to climate change and enhancing the natural environment.

Professor Nic Bury, Professor of Environmental Toxicology at the University of Suffolk, was also a guest speaker at the event, and said: “This event recognises the excellent work businesses in Suffolk are making in reducing their carbon footprint to Create the Greenest County. These organisations are inspirational and show what can be achieved. We face numerous environmental issues, widespread environmental pollution and biodiversity loss.

We need to recognise how important the natural environment is to our wellbeing and place nature at the forefront of our thinking, whether as individuals or businesses. When we accept this, innovative solutions to some of the most difficult environmental issues will evolve.”

Councillor Richard Rout, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for Environment and Public Protection, said: “When influential and respected figures such

as Lord Deben and Professor Bury recognise the dedication shown by many in Suffolk for caring for its environment, it makes me confident that we are on the right path.

“We are indeed making great strides in Suffolk, but I’m focused on how we can do more and do it better.”

Guests saw displays of a hydrogen vehicle, electric cars, electric motorbikes and promotion of Plug In Suffolk, the UK’s first open fast charging network for electric vehicles.

Guests were also given a tour of the venue, home to Woolley, a property management company that thrives on creating sustainable developments and holders of a Gold Suffolk Carbon Charter award themselves.

The event was sponsored by Business Energy Efficiency Anglia, which provides energy efficiency grants to eligible businesses in Suffolk and Norfolk. BEE Anglia is cofinanced by the European Union with £4,161,880 through the European Regional Development Fund.

t the end of June, Norwich High School for Girls organised its most ambitious Inspiring Females Summit event at the highly impressive Chelsea Football Club - a unique day for over 700 girls, including over 150 pupils from five Norfolk Schools, including Great Yarmouth, Long Stratton and North Walsham.

With a fantastic central London location, the event attracted high-profile speakers such as Dr Stephanie Hare, (BBC broadcaster/ researcher), Dr Shola MosShogbamimu (Lawyer and Founder of Women in Business publication), Katie Chapman (former Chelsea Football Club Captain), Olympic and Championship rower Annamarie Phelps CBE and England netballer Ama Agbeze.

Being an event founded in Norwich, there were also some amazing guests from Norfolk including Kate Tansley (CEO of Start-Rite shoes), Genevieve Raghu (Artistic Director and Founder of Into Opera), and The Hon. Alice Walpole OBE, who not only has a career spanning over 30 years in the Foreign Office, but is also a Norwich High alumna.

Hundreds more residents to benefit from recycling incentive Council tenants and leaseholders living in flats will be urged to start recycling more of their leftovers with a package of initiatives designed to make food recycling easier.

This week, residents living in councilowned flats with communal waste and recycling facilities, will receive a small kitchen caddy, two rolls of caddy liners, plus a recycling leaflet with the aim of driving up food recycling rates.

A ‘No food waste please’ sticker will also be stuck on the communal refuse bins. This is not a ban, but highlights that residents should be using their food waste collection instead of the rubbish bin.

Food recycling rates in Norwich almost doubled last year following the huge success of the council’s WRAP-funded food waste intervention Feed your caddy, which targeted householders in the city.

Further funding has meant the campaign can be rolled out to include even more residents.

Councillor Kevin Maguire, Norwich City Council cabinet member for recycling, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for all our residents to recycle their food waste. Ideally, we’d all be producing less food waste in the first place, but for the unavoidable leftovers, using your kitchen caddy makes perfect sense.

“What’s more, Norwich food is recycled into energy and fertilizer, which is so much better than throwing it away – I’d urge everyone to get food savvy and feed their caddy!”

…that Theresa May’s nickname was Submarine?

es, apparently when she was at the Home Office her fellow cabinet members called her ‘Submarine’, because, they said, whenever there was a threat of any trouble she would disappear. I either read or heard this somewhere, I can’t remember which, but assumed that it was common knowledge.

However, having written a song called ‘Submarine’ (available for your listening pleasure at germanfilmstars.bandcamp. com) detailing the catastrophic beginning of May’s premiership – without even touching on Brexit! – I discovered that very few people were aware of this.

Now there are two reasons why I mention this. Firstly, for the blatant plug for the German Film Stars debut album ‘The Blooming of the Tisza’ and, secondly, not to pour more scorn on Mrs May, but as an illustration of the way that politicians think and speak. The obvious implication of the cabinet’s explanation for this nickname is that whenever trouble is brewing Theresa runs away and hides, avoiding action and being ineffective, which was, at that time anyway, undoubtedly true. That, however, is not what a Submarine does.

When a Submarine ‘disappears’, it means that it is being effective, preparing for action and, frankly, you need to beware.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but ‘Snowflake’ is another one that I really don’t get. I don’t know who it was that first used this as an insult – possibly Farage or Morgan rather than an MP – but it doesn’t work. I suspect the suggestion was that they’re a bit delicate and melt away, but snowflakes are famously individual and unique and, rather than being weak and ineffective, if enough of them get together they can bring the Country to its knees. I take no offence at being called a ‘Snowflake’. And don’t get me started on the fact that some of the wealthiest, most privileged people (usually men) are calling other state school educated, former council estate dwellers who have made something of their lives, the ‘Elite’!

A stranger will inherit my hard-earned assets Remarrying is often a very special time in a person’s life. Giving you the chance to start over with a new partner, and live life to the fullest, remarrying can help to kick start the next chapter in your personal story.

However, if you have children from a previous marriage, remarrying comes with a wide range of considerations. One of the most important things to think about is inheritance. Although you may well be healthy now, if the worst does happen, your children may not get the money or property you expect them to have after you die. If your partner remarries after you’re gone, your money and property may pass to someone you’ve never even met. Known as ‘sideways disinheritance’, this common set of circumstances can lead to your kids being left with nothing.

Sideways disinheritance happens when a person dies either leaving a standard mirror will or no will at all and the bulk of their estate passes to their spouse. If the surviving spouse goes on to marry again and then they pre-deceasetheir new partner the money and assets they inherited from you could automatically pass to the new husband or wife.

In some cases, the new partner can change their will after their partner dies in order to disinherit your children, even if your surviving spouse had agreed that your estate should pass to your kids after second death.

If this happens, your hard-earned money and property could end up going to someone you’ve never even met, instead of being inherited by your children or other loved ones.

he Summer Fayre and Grand Opening of the WooWoo waterless toilet was met with a cold, wet June day, but the volunteers did us proud baking cakes and providing hot drinks for those who made it to the event despite the weather. The musicians played on with good humour and raised our spirits and the resident wren filled in the gaps!

The highlight of the day was the arrival of the Lord Mayor and Sheriff of Norwich to open the newly installed WooWoo wind-powered waterless toilet in the garden. This has been funded by the Norwich Freemen's Charity, the Norfolk Community Foundation, Jill Watkinson Sales and Marketing and Triple Bottom Line Accounting. Our distinguished visitors were very impressed with the new loo. It works by separating liquids and solids, followed by rapid dehydration and evaporation powered by the wind and the sun. ummer time, and the reading is easy, down at the Amnesty Book Shop in Unthank Road. Taking advantage of warmer temperatures, the door is open invitingly and passers-by can wander in for a browse and to choose some holiday reading.

‘We’ve a picked out a small display of fantastic beach books selected by volunteers, all at reasonable prices, and easy for people to pop in their suitcases,’ says Store Manager David Float.

‘There’s also a fantastic and ever-changing selection on our Fiction shelves, from romance, crime, best-sellers, and historical fiction to literary prizewinners – something for everyone, whatever their taste.’

Younger members of the family haven’t been forgotten. With the summer holidays stretching ahead, there’s every chance for children to get lost in a book and while away some of the long sunny hours in reading. On the shelves you’ll find adventure stories, classics, fairy tales and many of the best-loved kids’ classics, while pre-readers have their own section of picture books and read-aloud stories.

The shop is constantly in need of fresh donations, as it relies entirely on the generosity of the public to keep the shelves full.

‘Please bring us good quality books that you’ve finished with,’ says David. ‘We accept any size of donation, whether it’s a couple of books, a bag or two, or a pile of boxes. We can sell online any donations that aren’t suitable for the shop, or pass them on to resellers, so that everything we receive raises funds for Amnesty.’

Once you get back from holiday, bring your books back to the shop – provided they’re not too heavily drenched in suntan oil – and they can be resold to raise funds a second time. It’s such an easy local way to recycle.

New Potatoes with Grüne Sauce I am writing this in July, when the allotment is almost at its best. I’ve been picking fresh vegetables for nearly six weeks and I’m already on my second sowing of peas, lettuces, radishes and mangetout. I had trouble germinating beans but succeeded at the fourth attempt and the plants are now climbing the poles and developing flowers. My butternut squashes are looking very promising - and you know how important that is to me! I’ve already resolved to grow four times the amount of peas next year but the turnip greens need more watering than I am prepared to do and I will probably give them a miss.

One of the highlights of my gardening year is the first meal of new potatoes. I always eat them with Grüne Sauce. This was the favourite dinner of the German writer Goethe and for me is the epitome of the taste of early summer. Here is the recipe: Take seven different herbs and chop them up finely. I chose parsley, dill, mint, sorrel, chives, burnet and fennel but you could use any herbs. It doesn’t even have to be seven but the closer you get to that magic number the better. Make sure the herbs are fresh. Mix them with a mashed hard boiled egg, a few capers and some cut up anchovies. Stir in some plain yoghurt or mayonnaise or both.

Add a little salt, if you wish. Boil the potatoes in their skins and pour over the sauce. Enjoy!

A‘Magdalene Odundo: The Journey of Things’

We are thrilled to be able to share the work of one of the world’s most esteemed ceramicists, Magdalene Odundo OBE. This major exhibition will bring together more than 50 of Odundo’s works and will be shown alongside a large selection of objects chosen by Odundo from across the globe and spanning over 3,000 years.

The Sainsbury Centre will also showcase Transition II, Odundo’s largest work, made up of 1,001 individual suspended glass pieces. Presented in the context of Odundo’s ceramic practice, and redesigned site-specifically each time it is shown, Transition II will be presented in a sweeping crescendo, suggesting flowing water or a murmuration of starlings.

We are excited to confirm that the exhibition will be designed by Adjaye Associates. British architect, Sir David Adjaye OBE is a leading architect of his generation.

He has created important buildings such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture; the Idea Stores, London; and the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO. I went to see 2 theatre productions recently. Anna Mudeka’s superb Kure Kure Faraway tells the story of her growing up in Zimbabwe, move to the UK, and search to discover her ancestry and identity. A one woman play it holds and captivates you from start to finish concluding with the revelation of a DNA test. A must see play it is touring the UK with Norfolk dates September 6th at the Auden theatre Holt, October 19thNorwich, 22nd- Cromer, 25th Kings Lynn.

Anglia Square was a thought provoking, amusing, educational and observational play that took us on a journey from the arts school, over the water, and with stop off’s en route enlightening us of people’s plights down through the years culminating at Anglia square reflecting upon its past and contemplating its future. Superb acting, great songs, fascinating stories.

The reformed Rockingbirds, including 3 ex Norwich musicians, showcased their new album with a gig at Bermuda Bobs. Hints of Gram Parson’s with extra bite remain, and they can still write harmony laden top tunes.

The highlight of the night remains the classic ‘Jonathan, Jonathan’ tribute to Mr Richman however. Support came from former Farmers Boys led band the Mcguilty Brothers mixing original country tinged songs with covers including a stirring ‘Dead Flowers’.

A great gig. Myself, Pete and Liz from the penguins loved playing at the Scott Walker tribute night at Jurnets and I returned to their regular Friday gatherings and thoroughly enjoyed the well crafted and written pop tinged acoustic songs of Rob Carey, the one

man and guitar, full band on a laptop, hint of Nick Cave in the vocals, but more upbeat songs of Simon Tall, sweet harmony laden and yet thought provoking songs of female duo Patchwork Skies, and klezmer inspired tunes of Klezling. Shane’s Shenanigans at the Reindeer included a nod to Pink Floyd circa 67 hypnotic psych inspired set from The Wash, dramatic alternative jazz cabaret piano and vocal songs from Camille Davila, fluent instrumental guitar led tunes from The Tom Conway Trio, and echo laden chiming guitar and early 80s synth inspired Eiyuze. A fine evening. I managed to see 6 acts in an afternoon at the Dereham blues festival with R and B based Cruiser blues band, raw edged duo When Rivers Meet, and the branching out into funk, jazz and Hendrix 3 piece Groove Hounds being my pick of the 6. Mention also for session player Ray Fenwick who played songs by artists he worked with including Spencer Davis.

A good idea staging a festival around the town. Returning i really enjoyed the psychedelic, prog and kraut rock dj night Long Swords on the second Saturday of the month at the Louis Marchesi, and to round the weekend off we, penguins go pop launched our single ‘How An Astronaut feels’ in the week of the moon landing anniversary with a busy gig at the last pub standing. We really went out into space. Thanks everyone who joined us.
