s I write this it is my first day back in the Anglia Print office!
It is so nice to back here and see everyone and I was very surprised to see how much our flower beds have grown!! I hope you have all been keeping well and positive during this testing time. With restrictions being lifted all the time we are finding ourselves in a new ‘normal’ by the time this hits your doormats we all will be required to wear face masks before entering shops. What kind do you have? I have seen some really creative ideas out there, but mine is just a boring plain blue one. Did you see the story of the poor seagull in Chelmsford that had a face mask become wrapped around his legs? Luckily the RSPCA rescued him and he is recovering well although I do fear that won’t be the case for other creatures.
really does make me sick. While this PPE is needed to help keep us, our loved ones, and our communities’ safe during COVID-19, it is essential that this environmental hazard is disposed of properly in order to keep it from finding its way into our streets, rivers, oceans and to protect our wildlife. The school term is fast approaching and I need to start getting my girls back to school stuff ready. I think they are both a little apprehensive of what their return will be like with social bubbles, one way systems and staggered start, break and finish times, but I know they can’t wait to get back and see their friends. It was such a shame that they only managed half the school year in their current year groups, but they had fantastic reports so i am confident that they will thrive in their next chapter! Until next time.... Stay Safe and Positive!

Grapes Hill Community Garden We are excited to announce that the garden is now open, just in time to enjoy the summer months in the city. Anyone is welcome to enjoy the garden from dawn to dusk by wandering to take a look at the plants and urban wildlife, coming along to schedule events and we often find people just relaxing as they enjoy a book under the trees. Grapes Hill Community Garden is a special little place and we want to keep it looking great for visitors and now some restrictions have been lifted we are running our volunteering sessions again. These are run by our part time gardener Jo, who is always on hand to guide and teach. No experience is necessary so you are welcome to come along every other Sunday from 2pm to 4pm or every Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm. Please see our website and social media pages for updates. Social distancing will be in place to ensure that everyone is safe and comfortable in the garden. We are hoping to run some more events, which will be a smaller version of some of our past popular days in the garden, along with some workshops ranging from how to grow and make herbal teas, permaculture and planting for bees which are all funded by The National Lottery Community Fund. Please keep a check on our website for details as they are made available. All volunteer sessions, events and workshops must be booked via Eventbrite. They are free to attend but we need a record to allow for social distancing.

Inspiring Change Makers Online Summit 2020
Norwich Science Festival to return in 2021 Organisers of the award-winning Norwich Science Festival have confirmed that the annual celebration of science will not be going ahead in October this year, but that it will return bigger and better in 2021.
From Norwich to 26,000 young people across the UK
I
n May 2020, Norwich High School for Girls launched its first-ever online conference event, with over 45 outstanding guest speakers participating, from celebrity chef Prue Leith CBE to Chartered Engineer, Yewande Akinola MBE. Speakers supplied pre-recorded sessions and participated in live Q&A sessions for a bespoke website, with keynote talks delivered by top figures in their fields, including Tram Anh Nguyen, Co-founder of the CFTE and Tessy Ojo, CEO of the Diana Award. Other big names included Sunday Times Luxury Content Director Lorraine Candy and Olympic Hockey Champion Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE. The event also had a contingent of Norfolk Change Makers, from Genevieve Raghu, founder of Into Opera, to lawyers Naomi Newell and Rebecca Bond from Birketts LLP. The website was launched on Thursday 21st May, reaching 26,000 young people of which 95% said that they felt empowered to become a future Change Maker. Takeaways from the young people who took part included “We all have the power to make a difference”, “Accept who you are”, “Be the best version of yourself”, and “Always try and improve the lives of others.” The programme content is still available to view for free at www.inspiringfemales.org.uk

Find out more about Norwich High at www.norwichhigh.gdst.net Champion Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE, and of course Prue Leith CBE, who launched the event with a breakfast pancake recipe. The event also had a contingent of Norfolk Change Makers, from Genevieve Raghu, founder of arts charity Into Opera, who delivered a session entitled “If there was ever a time for creativity… it’s now!”, to lawyers Naomi Newell and Rebecca Bond from Birketts LLP. On the day, the website also hosted a selection of live Q&A sessions to find out more from the amazing guests who participated. The website was launched on Thursday 21st May, reaching 26,000 young people immediately, of which 95% saying that they felt truly empowered to become a Change Maker after participating. Individual takeaways from the young people who took part included “We all have the power to make a difference”, “Accept who you are and be the best version of yourself”, “Failure is feedback”, “Shyness is a superpower”, and “Always try and improve the lives of others.”
Natalie Bailey, Norwich Science Festival Producer, said: “It’s with a heavy heart that we’ve taken the decision to cancel Norwich Science Festival 2020. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in staff furloughing and a reduction in finances and funding, it unfortunately isn’t possible to bring you our award-winning celebration of science this year. Rest assured we’ll be back with a bang in 2021, with another interactive, engaging and entertaining Festival for all ages and all levels of knowledge, organised by The Forum and partners across the city.” Although the Festival as such is not possible, organisers have announced a small series of online events to maintain momentum and enthusiasm for science in the city. Natalie explained: “We’ll be bringing you a mini #NorwichSciFestAtHome online programme in October with our patrons Mark Thompson, Lizzie Daly and Prof Ben Garrod, plus partners UEA and Norwich Research Park.” Look out for more details of the mini #NorwichSciFestAtHome programme in September.

English strawberry jam 2 kg strawberry’s – hulled and halved
Loneliness and Mental Health
Grandma’s scone An old family recipe and in my opinion the best scone in the world, it is cooked in a large loaf rather than in individual scones and the middle is all soft and doughy packed with plenty of fruits while the edge is crisp.
2 lemons – juiced 2 kg granulated sugar • In a large thick-bottomed saucepan add the strawberries and lemon juice. • Cook on a gentle heat for 40 minutes until the strawberries have broken down in to a mush.
300 g self raising flour - sieved 70 g butter - soften
• Add the sugar, stirring until dissolved and cook till the mix reaches 105*c (approx 10 – 12 minutes – see wrinkle test below)
70 g white sugar 125 g raisins 12 or so glace cherry’s
• Skim of any throff or skum from the top. • Set aside, cooling slightly for 10 - 12 minutes until a skin sets on top and then stir (this makes sure the strawberries stay evenly distributed). • Spoon or funnel the jam in to sterilised jars filling to the top, seal with a wax disc and a screw on lid. • Leave to cool. • Label and store in a cool place until needed. Jam Tips - Jam will store for 6 months but once opened should be stored in the fridge. Sterilised jars by warming through in the oven, dish wash on a high setting or boil in a saucepan of water. Strawberries have a little natural pectin in them so it will set loosely for a firm jam use pectin or pectin sugar both can be bought in supermarkets. Apples have a high level of pectin so a grated apple will help to set the jam further. Wrinkle Test – spoon a teaspoon of jam on to a saucer and place in the fridge to set. After a few minutes when cold the jam should wrinkle when you run your finger through it and the jam shouldn’t be runny. Recipe by Zena Leech-Calton © 8

ost of us have felt loneliness at some stage in our lives and some of us feel it more acutely than others. Being lonely isn’t a mental health issue in itself, but it can make us feel down and it can lead to existing psychological health issues getting worse. We all require human contact but finding out how much, and in which way you personally require it, is the question. By becoming self-aware, and acknowledging and accepting your genuine preferences, you can do what you want to do rather than what you think you should, must or ought to do. Some of us have lots of friends, some of us have one or two. Some contact each other very frequently, while many of us talk occasionally. Lots of us like big groups and lots like one on one chats. There is no right number and it’s not to say it’s good to be gregarious and bad to be introverted - it’s good to be yourself.

In terms of making friends, acceptance of yourself and who you feel realistically genuine with, is the key. Once you’ve found friends who you are relaxed with, who you sit really easily next to, value them and nurture those friendships. If you are feeling lonely, be with other people and try to connect in an authentic and understanding ‘true to yourself’ way. If you want more friends, it might be a good idea to try and join in, share and try to empathise. Remember, you don’t need to like everyone or to be liked by everyone, or have huge numbers of friends. Having two or three close friends that will actually try to understand your thoughts and feelings, while putting their own stuff to one side, is extremely valuable and deeply comforting. If you’re struggling, contact counselling and psychotherapy practice, Emotionalskills. Call 07986 488690 or email info@emotionalskills.uk. Visit www.emotionalskills.uk
• Rub the butter in to the flour and the sugar, till it resembles bread crumbs. • Mix in the raisins and cherry’s. • Meanwhile beat the egg and the milk together and reserve approx. 1 tablespoon to brush on top. • Mix the rest of the egg mix in to the crumb mix by hand to form a soft dough. • Grease and flour a baking sheet. • Splat it on top and roughly form it in to a rounded rectangle. • Score it in to 10 pieces. • Egg wash with the reserved mix. • Place in a cold oven on the top shelf, set at gas 8 / 220*c and cook for 10 minutes. • Then turn the oven down to gas 5/ 200*c for another 12 - 14 minutes or until cooked. Although I like mine a little doughy in the middle. Recipe by Zena Leech-Calton © www.lovenorfolkfood.co.uk instagram @love_norwich_food U Tube – Dyslexic Chef

ell as they say with the blues….I woke up this morning,,,, to find NASA had bumped me out of being an Arien (that’s arien not aryan!) and dumped me into being a Pisces !! Where did that come from ? Haven’t they got enough on their plate planning a trip to Mars and dodging conspiracy theories about the Apollo moon landings, they must be true…. they were on the telly!! Lockdown is easing in the Anchor bunker and still no sign of being told to pack up my airfix paints and glue so is someone anticipating a second wave? Garden still in pristine lockdown mode thanks to Mrs. A. watch out Ms. Dimmock!! Keeping up with the virus is a bit tricky now that the Eton Rifle is not issuing any figures and little Matty is demanding a re-count. Backdoor herd immunity very much in evidence at the seaside this weekend, all bags of chips and kiss me quick (which with the right person could be seen as a pleasant way to contract the thing). Still in the spirit of 1914 and all that….it will all be over by Christmas, which hopefully it will be or things could get ugly at Click and Collect!! I don’t think there will much in the way of Silent Night wafting over from the trenches and Sir Paul singing about Pipes of Peace which is a slight step up from Mull of Kintyre but hardly Eleonor Rigby…. Talking of it all been over …..well it is now. After the last edition where we lost Norman we have now had to say goodbye to his partner in crime in the mighty Leeds back four. Big Jack Charlton has gone, what a centre half.. something that seems to be lacking at Carrow “keep those doors closed” Road. They could also do with Jack and his

little brother Bobby along with Jack Hawkins and Richard Todd to bounce them back to the Premiership but I doubt the money will be forthcoming. So it could be a quick whip round in Morrisons car park and an attempt to entice Darren Huckerby away from Cringleford Veterans FC, one of the few teams to have been sponsored by a wine bar… well it is near Waitrose. Also a team at one point graced or rather lumbered with the not so silky skills of yours truly!! Mind you I did get most improved player and goal of the season (awarded by the lads in total disbelief at me being in the 6 yard box at the right time). Well we all missed the summer panto season with Prince Charming conspicuous by his photo absence from his first born’s wedding pics (thankfully I haven’t seen the toe sucker either) Other noticeable absentee was MeAgain and her ginger friend, maybe the two were busy trying to be financially independent in downtown Hollywood (ready for my close-up) …..I wonder if any of the Windsors were furloughed…..probably not! Recent delves into the world of Facebook has seen me so far resist joining the Jenny Agutter Fan Page but I did weaken with “Control Towers & Airfield Architecture Worldwide” and “The Arthur Askey Appreciation Society” …..hello playmates! So as we sign off again and we await the new scores on the doors from little Matty and possibly a second wave remember a facemask isn’t just for Halloween!........it’s for Aldi, Lidl and even Waitrose… Be good or at least be careful W. NMUTE is a series of six fully captioned short films by Norwich’s Hack Theatre in which international artists, writers and performers discuss how they are finding new ways to work and champion marginalised voices after Covid19. Each film gives an engaging glimpse into the diverse experiences of artists across different artforms, along with never-seenbefore short adaptation pieces. The films are all around 30 minutes long. Each consists of a discussion between the artist and Hack Theatre’s Michelle Sewell, their themed top tips for emerging artists and a monologue from the featured artist. They are available to view free at www.hacktheatre.co.uk/unmute The contributing artists all make issue-based work and UNMUTE includes themes of race, gender, disability, sexuality, screen exhaustion, international collaboration and financial inequality. Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of their work and the artists explore how these can be central to future arts/cultural practice and provision. Each will also share a truthful short adaptation piece that captures this moment and the need for change. The contributors are writer Afshan D’Souza-Lodhi born in Dubai of Indian/

Pakistani parentage; Athena Stevens a writer and performer from Chicago with athetoid cerebral palsy; Glasgow based performance poet Sean Wai Keung; London born Koko Brown a spoken word artist and theatre-maker; Australian comedian and TV writer James Colley and Christina Murdock from San Francisco whose younger sister has atypical Rett syndrome, speech apraxia and severe epilepsy, leading her to became a passionate advocate for the issues of disability, care-giving, anti-racism, accessibility, and inclusion. Michelle Sewell said ‘I’m really humbled to have had such insightful conversations with such talented artists for UNMUTE, who bring such unique voices to these important issues that so many different communities are facing right now. I have had to think really creatively about how to have an inspiring discussion from my bedroom/ meeting room/writing room. They have all been wonderful to work with and I’m very proud of the films we have created together. We hope the films will capture what is happening right now and inspire others to keep adapting, championing, and calling it out wherever they feel they can.’
I am writing this in the middle of July and our small, rural allotment site looks wonderful. We’ve had lots of time to tend our plots and whether it’s that or the weather we’ve had since sowing and planting began, individual allotments are bursting with produce and are promising a long harvest. So here are some news in numbers, in no particular order, to demonstrate our communal successes so far: There were 5 full-size cauliflowers grown on one plot. This means that the average number of cauliflowers raised successfully on the allotment site over the last 17 years has doubled from 0.29 to 0.58 per annum! The heaviest cabbage picked so far weighed 2kg. This will no doubt be eclipsed as there are some savoy cabbages which look like they’ll be turning into trees. The most diverse plot is growing over 40 different varieties of fruit and veg. The most impressive self-seeded sunflower is over 2.5 meters tall and has about 20 side-shoots which are all developing flowers. It’s not a sunflower so much as a tropical rainforest plant. The most prolific squash has 10 healthy looking butternuts developing. Nobody can remember that many squashes on one plant ever. The quickest marrow off the mark increased in length by over 20 cm in one week. The owner of this particular triffid can’t contain his excitement as it’s being grown for a competition. Nobody has complained of spectacular failures or massive infestations of pests. It’s been a brilliant growing season! Birgit Griem

The Greenhouse Trust A public consultation on plans for the UK’s newest nuclear power station is deeply flawed and should be suspended, according to two leading energy policy experts. Professor Andrew Stirling and Dr Philip Johnstone say the consultation into Bradwell B is invalid because the UK government has repeatedly failed to make the case for nuclear in the face of its ever-rising costs, slow lead times and poor value-for-money comparison to renewables. The academics at the world-renowned Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex Business School have criticised the restrictive nature of the consultation’s scope which they argue excludes crucial underlying questions over the rationale for building more nuclear power stations in the UK. Prof Stirling and Dr Johnstone say the consultation should resume only when the government publish a long-promised rigorous justification for nuclear power compared to other low carbon energy sources – something they argue it has failed to do for the past 17 years.
Monty Shaft’s Did You Know… … that the football season is over … finally!
O
r at least it will be when you read this; as I type there are two defeats, sorry, games to go. It’s been a multi-record-breaking season for Norwich, sadly not in a good way. We will finish with the lowest points tally we have ever had in any league and have just broken our record for consecutive defeats. We haven’t been good enough. We knew it would be a struggle if everything was in our favour, but no-one could have foreseen that we wouldn’t have a single week when Farke would have a full compliment of CB’s to choose from – more often than not, there were only two, sometimes none – that Pukki would have to play half the season with an injured toe, that VAR would be such a pain, that none of the signings, apart from Byram, would work out, that we would be 2nd in the table for hitting the woodwork and, most importantly, Covid-19. I say ‘most importantly’ because something happened during the enforced break. I don’t know what, but something did. Before the lockdown we may not have been getting the results, but we were playing well, were entertaining and we’d won a few points and come close to getting more. Pundits, journalists and supporters of other clubs had called us the best team ever to be bottom of the Premiere League. But

not after the lockdown. After lockdown we’ve been awful, barely registering a shot on goal, defending like schoolboys and, apart from the odd 10 minutes here and there, just not playing very well. So why? Apart from Timm Klose, it was the same players, and I don’t think it’s down to him any more than anyone else. The only other thing that changed was the absence of fans. Last season, and this, much was made by the club about the importance of, and the bond with, the fans. It seems that we may have been more important than even they, or we, thought. Which is a worry, as it seems likely that we won’t be there for the start of next season either.
F
inally, some thoughts on recurring themes on social media. Most of the overseas signings responsible for our promotion last season took a year to acclimatise, so why are this season’s signings/loans being crucified for not making an immediate impact? Secondly, money is no guarantee of success. Don’t forget that there will be 2 teams going down with us, who spent at least £80m this season. Had we done so and still gone down, we would now be up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

pera Helps began as a site-specific art project in which professional opera singers visited people in the comfort of their own homes to sing to them one to one. It harnessed the redemptive power of opera to help with participant's personal problems. Unlike therapy, or a trip to the doctor, Opera Helps doesn’t aim to cure the problem - but participants found the experience deeply affecting and have felt that their private space feels different afterwards. Due to Covid19 restrictions we cannot currently welcome strangers into our homes. Nevertheless, Opera Helps creator, internationally renowned artist and Triangle passionate opera enthusiast Joshua Sofaer, has been inspired to adapt the concept for online delivery. He feels that now, more than ever, the power of live opera can be a powerful tool to help people through a time of crisis. So, for Opera Helps Online anyone with a problem is invited to contact Opera Helps to arrange for an online visit from a professional opera singer. Opera Helps lasts approximately 30 minutes and is completely free and will run to mid October.

‘Historically opera was always a popular art form,’ said Joshua. ‘Even 50 years ago hairdressers in Italy would sing arias as they worked. Yet now it is seen as something highbrow, for the rich and highly educated, inaccessible to most people. By relocating opera to the home in an online setting and relating it to personal problems I truly think we can introduce people to the music who wouldn’t otherwise have given it a chance.’ As a passionate opera enthusiast, Joshua found that listening to opera had a direct emotional impact on him. It reached his heart and core very quickly, had a very positive effect on his mood and he came away refreshed. Joshua sees Opera Helps as a way of introducing new audiences to his passion as well as demonstrating the transformative power of song. A pool of 6 experienced professional singers have been specially trained by Joshua (an accredited Relational Dynamics coach) to listen appropriately, to empathise and to ask simple, open questions but not to offer advice or counselling. The simple process to take part is explained at www.operahelps.com where applications can be made.

Norwich Puppet Theatre presents a new online series of some of Roald Dahl’s fabulously funny poems
Richard Penguin’s
Musical Triangle
M Enjoy Roald Dahl’s Dirty Beasts and Revolting Rhymes, with Norwich Puppet Theatre’s special series of online mini shows. Brand new performances of Dahl’s poems will be released on the Theatre’s YouTube channel, with each rhyme being performed by a different artist or company working in lockdown. Audiences can look forward to a wonderful range of puppetry styles, from shadow theatre, to animation and rod marionettes. This online series celebrates the charm and humour in Roald Dahl’s original words, as well as the magical creativity within an artistic community working from home. At least one performance will be released a week, starting in August and running into the Autumn. Keep an eye on Norwich Puppet Theatre’s website and social media channels for updates on dates and times for the premieres!

any people will no doubt have been missing going to gigs and festivals during lockdown, and contemplating in the long term what the future will hold for them. The Government announced on July 9th that outdoor concerts, performances and festivals could re-start in 2 days time, and on the 18th that venues could re-open on the 1st August. However critics have suggested that not enough guidance in how to do so has been given, and whether these decisions were taken with people or the economy being paramount in their thinking. Firstly it has been argued that the announcement at short notice about outdoor gigs and festivals failed to take into account the planning, arranging and organising that goes into an event, and that little advice has been given on crucial issues such as social distancing which after a few pints will almost certainly go completely out of the window not only with the audience, but the artists as well. This might be possible some might say at the outdoor festival and concert events being suggested by the mega event organisers, such as the drive in concert which you experience from the comfort of your car, or as a family / household atop one of 500 podiums in the middle of a field, but it would be much harder to maintain in a beer garden on a balmy August weekend afternoon when alcohol has been flowing. Indoor concerts currently offer even more potential for problems. If social distancing is to be

adhered to then in some cases audiences may have to be cut people wise by up to 50%, making many events economically not viable for the venues, especially the smaller one’s. It may also require sticking to an area or table, pre booking, and maybe even having to download an app, something which has been subject to scrutiny of late by organisations concerned about data protection as to whether it could lead to gaining access to people’s accounts and details. A friend recently suggested that potentially a band or artist could play 2 concerts in one evening from 7-9, and 9-11 pm with half the audience there for the early gig and half for the latter. This is an interesting suggestion but would of course need the artist or band to agree to it. Currently many artists who share houses or are a couple, and even bands in separate locations have been playing virtual concerts through the many means of technology that are often beyond me, some free and for fun, others on a pay per view basis. While this does not usually offer the same atmosphere or excitement of being at the venue or in the room it does at least comply with the socially distancing rule. Who knows when, or if, it will be completely safe to return to playing live or going to a gig again. Currently my thinking is that I personally may wait until the end of this or start of next year. Having announced in January that my own band would be taking a break until the Summer despite a few offers I can not see
us returning now until next year. While to some extent Norfolk has fared reasonably well during this pandemic whatever you choose to do if you do decide to venture out to a gig or a festival, should they take place, take care, be aware and in the words of Richard Thompson ‘Keep your Distance’ and remember covid 19 wise in the words of Lenny Kravitz ‘It ain’t over til it’s over’. Lol RECENT RELEASES- BEN AVISON‘LOVERS LEAP’ Written on a boat in Oxford on his well produced second album Ben explores themes such as relationships, fallen idols, destiny and isolation on a subtle and languid album of folk pop songs that takes a couple of listens to fully appreciate but is well worth pursuing as some real gems lurk within. 4/5. RAY COOPER- THE BEAST EP- Multi-instrumentalist former Oyster band man Ray’s hard hitting new ep is ‘Folk with an edge’. The title track warns of the world returning to the middle ages, ‘Eyes of Mercy’ tells the story of a mute hospital patients observations, and instrumental ‘The Burning Pile’ builds to a cinematic crescendo inspired by the Swedish Witch trials of the 1600s. Recorded in Sweden, released on a German label, listened to in Norfolk. 4/5.
