’ve loved football since my Father took me to my first match, Norwich V York City in 1972, Dave Stringer scoring if I remember rightly. York is where my family are from so York City has always been my other team but their fortunes

haven’t been great over the last few seasons and they have fallen down the leagues to finish 12th in the National League North this season. Gone are the glory days of 2012 where they won the FA Trophy and promotion in the play off finals. Still, onwards and upwards. Norwich City on the other hand, under Daniel Farke, have had a great season, playing excellent exciting football that makes me

Grapes Hill Community Garden news LPA Awareness has to Increase!!! According to Alzheimer’s Research the number of people with dementia is projected to increase rapidly over the next several decades, mainly due to increases in life expectancy and population demographics. According to the charity, one million people in the UK will have dementia by 2025, and this will increase to two million by 2050. The research also shows that, while there are currently 12.8 million people over the age of 65 who run the risk of developing dementia, there are only 928,000 Health & Welfare LPAs presently registered with the Office of the Public Guardian across England and Wales. If you lose capacity and do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, you have to apply to the Court of Protection for Deputyship. This can take up to 12 months and costs in the region of £5,000. Is it worth running the risk?? For the full article, please visit www.thewillmaker.co.uk Written by

hanks to everyone who came and supported the Nature Day in the community garden with the Birds of Prey display last month – If you enjoyed this then don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter or follow the group on Facebook. See the website for links to both. The next event is a summer fair which is part of the NR2 Yard Sale on Saturday 8th June. There will be music, stalls and refreshments from 10-4pm. Visit the garden as part of the trail. At 11am the new waterless, solar-powered eco loo will be officially opened with our funders attending. Many thanks to Norwich Freemen’s Charity and the Norfolk Community Foundation for the funding. Our Sunday and Wednesday volunteer sessions continue until October as does the family gardening group – dates and times updated on website and Facebook. Our secretary who has been with the group, since it was founded in 2008, is moving from Norwich later this year, so we are looking for a volunteer assistant secretary to work with her ready to take over the lead role in March 2020. This would involve joining the GHCGG management committee with an option of becoming a trustee at a later date. Responsibilities could include: 1. Attend committee meetings and AGM 2. Take minutes at meetings 3. Help at some of the events and/ or help run them 4. Active volunteer recruitment 5. 5. A fresh perspective on what we do and what could change

This is Britain. We are the lucky ones and I profoundly balk against the above description of May. It is my favourite time of the year in the garden. Lots of sowing has been done and brand new green shoots are strong enough for gardeners to start counting their chickens, so to speak. And then there are some fresh pickings to be had already. On my allotment, parsley, which grew in the shelter of some kale all winter, has been joined by chives, welsh onions, mint, marjoram, fennel, Good King Henry, sorrel, rocket, landcress, coriander and lots of rhubarb. I love counting things (obsessively some say) and couldn’t help totting up the number of different edibles I will be looking after this year. It came to 17 different herbs, 37 kinds of vegetable and 13 varieties of fruit. At this point even my husband got excited. “Never mind the choice,” he said, spluttering into his prime numbers mug. “Do you realise they are all prime numbers? And what’s more, the sum of them is a prime number too?” That may be true but definitely it’s a lot. Nature is amazing!

Free Hearing Care Fortnight in Norfolk

O

ne local business is committing to raise awareness of hearing loss in Norfolk by holding free hearing loss awareness events throughout the county to encourage locals to prioritise their hearing health. The Hearing Care Centre, which is a familyrun business with 26 centres across East Anglia, has organised Norfolk Hearing Care Fortnight. Special free-to-attend events will be held across the county in Hethersett, Aylsham, Dereham, Norwich, Watton, Attleborough and Hoveton from Tuesday 11th June 2019. The team, led by Norfolk audiologist Simon Myhill, will be offering complimentary appointments where they will conduct free hearing assessments, offer expert advice and make personalised recommendations on solutions that could lead attendees on the path to better hearing. There will also be special offers throughout this event with savings of up to £1,500 on selected hearing aids. Hearing loss affects 1 in 6 people in the UK and it takes 10 years on average before those who have noticed a loss in their hearing choose to seek help. Research has also proven that as well as an overall reduced quality and experience of life, hearing loss can also lead to cognitive decline resulting in conditions such as depression and dementia. Karen Finch, founder and lead audiologist at

The Hearing Care Centre said “Hearing loss is a real issue in the UK. More often than not it’s a gradual process, it’s not always easy to tell if you’re losing your hearing. Therefore it is so important to have your hearing assessed on a regular basis to intervene at the earliest stage possible.” The Hearing Care Centre is a multi-award winning, independent company with 26 hearing centres across East Anglia, including 9 local clinics in Norfolk. orwich’s multi award-winning Voice Project Choir are presenting two very special summer performances in the spectacular grounds and gardens of Houghton Hall near Kings Lynn on Saturday 6 July at 5.30pm and 8pm. I Reach Right Up to the Sun is being specially created to be performed among the exhibits for Henry Moore at Houghton Hall - Nature and Inspiration. All the music is written specially for the 100 voices of the choir by composers Karen Wimhurst, Helen Chadwick, Orlando Gough and Voice Project co-director Jonathan Baker. As ever the choir will be conducted by Jon’s fellow Voice Project co-director Sian Croose. Jon and Sian have worked closely with Houghton Hall to create a promenade performance that allows the audience to gently stroll around the exhibits and view them from a fresh perspective, creating a new interaction between sculpture and ethereal vocal music. The exhibition is the first significant show in East Anglia of Moore’s work. It sits alongside Houghton Hall’s permanent exhibits which include iconic works by landscape artist Richard Long, Rachel Whiteread and James Turrell. Sian Croose said ‘The choir are really excited at the prospect of performing in such an extraordinary setting. It’s the next step in the

aying for care is something that worries many clients. Phil Beck, Independent Financial Adviser at Almary Green, looks at some of the issues involved. The possibility of needing long term care is something that concerns many clients. his year we are are designating the whole of July as Pride Month. We’re going to launch a souvenir edition of the Pride Guide on Friday 28th June - the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots - and we are organising four weeks of activities to celebrate 50 years of LGBT+ liberation. Why are we doing this? Well, we did a Big Survey after last year’s Norwich Pride and nearly 250 people took part. One of the key messages we got back was that people loved Norwich Pride but they wanted more of it. This is our response to that request. We are delighted to be working with organisations across the city to put on a range of activities across the whole month. We’ve got weekly

sessions to enable people to write, sing and samba with Pride as well as some amazing special events with top class authors, comedians, artists and sports-people. We’ve even got a Pride Cocktail at the Cosy Club and a Queer Beer at the Artichoke Pub. We kick off the month with Pride Schools Week in the first week in July and from then on every day is Pride Day in the city, culminating in a magnificent Pride March leaving City Hall at 1pm on Saturday 27th July. We’ll also be joining in the Norfolk Day celebrations and together spreading the message that we are proud to live in a county where everyone can feel safe and proud to be themselves.

The Bungay Ducks are about to take to the River Waveney once again for the 5th Great Bungay Duck Race! In addition to the wonderful range of stallholders there will be donkey rides, face painting, children’s games and great musical entertainment featuring new and exciting local musicians. In keeping with their natural habitats, we will be hosts to the beautiful Fritton Owls along with a variety of rare breeds from the Earsham Wetlands centre. Refreshments will include The Falcon Inn Bar and a range of local catering including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free, as well as the more traditional burgers, sausages, cakes, drinks and ice creams. We are confident that this year’s event will once again be a huge success, so please help us all to continue to make the Bungay Duck Race a fun and enjoyable occasion for the whole community and mark another milestone in the development of our beautiful water meadow. ou didn’t? Well where have you been for the past couple of weeks? Not in Norwich, that’s for sure.

I’ve been a Season Ticket Holder at the Carra since Norwich City’s visit to League One - the Colchester game was my first as a ST Holder; never before have the words “What have I done?” been so heartfelt! – but I’ve been a fan for nigh on 50 years, so like to think I have sufficient background to add my two penn’orth. I can honestly say that this has been the most enjoyable Season that I’ve experienced. There may have been the odd game over the years that eclipsed any single game from this year, but as a campaign, it beat every other, even the 1993 3rd place PL finish. But why? I’m not sure I can really add much to what has already been written by others, which may be the point. We’ve all been in this together, thinking, reacting, encouraging, admiring as one. All predictions for this Season were for a similar finish to last. I’m very much an optimist when it comes to Norwich, but even I would have been happy to graze the top 10, especially after the first few games. While people, particularly some near me, weren’t happy, some of us could see that this was more promising than last year. Considerably more entertaining and we were only a couple of individual mistakes away from decent results. Then Farke made some changes – Pukki moved to main striker, Stiepermann to No 10, Zimmermann came in and, crucially, so did the youth of Aarons, Cantwell and Godfrey. We loved Pinto’s ‘Pitch

War’ attitude, but who wouldn’t prefer Max’s skill, tenacity and defensive nous!? Whether enforced by injury, or Manager’s tactical awareness, it all just clicked and suddenly we were attacking at speed, passing the ball and scoring goals for fun. We were playing sexy, exciting football, even before all the extra-time goals! Then add in the penalty misses, floodlight failures, derby day ‘handbags’, extraordinary comebacks, outrageous Buendia flicks and Leitner/Vrancic/ McLean. Boring it wasn’t! As the Season progressed, we started believing something special might happen and, more importantly, believed in the team. We didn’t think we would lose. Even when we did! 3-0 down at Preston, when Pukki scored in injury time, who wasn’t thinking, ‘we can still do this’? Top scorers, top 2 since November, 21 weeks on top, we were the best team in the League. A team made up of free transfers, those anxious to get their careers back on track, promising youngsters from the lower European Leagues and our own Academy. A group of like-minded players, all coming together, pushing, encouraging and supporting each other, with something to prove to themselves, to each other, to the Manager, the Owners and, above all else, us. And we loved them for it. Sure, there’s still those screaming at the players to hoof it forward when the back five pass it around and moan if we go two games without a win, but they’re now very much the minority, the rest of us support the team from start to finish, win, lose or draw. Long may it continue. OTBC!

The Farmer’s Year, published in 1933 to great acclaim, includes twelve images by Claire Leighton depicting a cycle of agricultural activities. This epic and beautiful vision of rural England reminds of us of an age, not that long ago, which offered a landscape not beneficial just for humans, but also for plants and animals. As a leading illustrator, wood engraver, painter, author, teacher and poster, ceramics and glass designer, Clare Leighton enjoyed a distinguished career on both sides of the Atlantic. The originals from 1933 images are on show in the Greenhouse Gallery until 26th October alongside creative responses to the images from painters, print-makers and writers taking part in this years Open Studios. The exhibition is accompanied by both written and filmed observations on contemporary farming by Helen Browning OBE, Soil Association CEO. The exhibition is the backdrop to a number of talks and presentations across this six month period, given by the artists, writers and activists involved with the Greenhouse Trust’s Climate Change Challenge. The Greenhouse exhibition presents a set of the original 1933 prints from ‘The Farmer’s Year’ alongside contemporary reprints of the images and the original book. The paperback version, reprinted by Little Toller Books, is available from the Greenhouse Bookshop, price £12.00. The prints cost from £200 - £350, with profits going to the Greenhouse Trust charity.

Local History Matters A VERY SPECIAL GARDEN IN NORWICH JUST WAITING FOR YOUR VISIT

W

hen work building Norwich Cathedral originally started in 1096 the workforce were not to know that they had forty-nine years to wait before the great enterprise would be finished in 1145. It’s difficult to know for sure but I’m minded to think it very likely that one of the very first areas to be planned and cultivated was the herb garden. Sixty Benedictine Monks took up their vocations in the monastic establishment in 1101 when only the far eastern end of the building was finished, but at least the monks could commence their life of dedicated prayerfulness to God in this area. One of the monks’ aims was to care for the sick, and this they would ultimately be able to do in what for them was a ‘state-of-the-art’ hospital wing off the south side of the cloister. This the monks knew as the ‘Infirmary’ and, if you visit the cathedral site today and locate the car park south of the cloisters you will find five pink-tinged stone columns in varying states of preservation standing in splendid isolation by the cathedral office. These stubs of masonry are all that is left of the monks’ hospital structure. We now have to stretch our imaginations somewhat but there would have been beds for the sick between these columns and others that have long since disappeared. Those needing the services of the sick-bay would have been treated with long-established herbal remedies and the plants would have been grown on site in what was often termed a ‘physic garden’.

However, not everything grown in this special garden was for use in the Infirmary. There were three other main uses of the products of this planted area – Culinary; to enhance the flavours of foods, Brewing; to add flavour to ale and to make cordials used to remedy ‘worm’ ailments and to keep teeth healthy, amongst other things, and finally, Strewing; where aromatic plants such as Lavender, Bay and Rosemary were scattered onto the original bare earth in the cathedral building in order to keep it fresh and sweet-smelling. So the products of the herb garden were an essential part of the fabric of life in the early monastery. About fifteen years ago the cathedral re-established a herb garden in the precincts and this is a truly delightful place to go and sit on a pleasant day. Make your way into the Close via the Ethelbert Gate and walk past the gatekeeper’s hut and then straight ahead until you reach a building surrounded by railings on your left called ‘Emmaus House’ and here you will find the herb garden, which is believed to be very adjacent to where the monks’ garden was situated. It is open from 10am to 5pm every day from April to October and entry is free. By the time you are reading this page the lavenders will be in flower and hopefully buzzing with bees. Treat yourself to a relaxing rest in this tranquil space. DAVID A. BERWICK

o after what seemed the longest pregnancy since Mary Tudor….. it’s a boy! So Me Again has secured her place on the gravy train stopping at Windsor, Kensington and Savile Row or should I say Suits! But on the plus side she and ginger have apparently given a nod to the Fab Four with the middle name Harrison it would have been nice to have had a George in there too but we can’t have everything (unlike them). I reckon they have surpassed themselves with their recognition of the classic British Radio show from the Light Programme. It’s not everyday we get a reference to a ventriloquist’s dummy, unless we are hearing about real life dummies in the royal firm that is, yes who can forget Educating Archie!! It is to be hoped that the lad will be brought up on a hearty diet of Hancock, Jimmy Clitheroe and the Navy Lark!! This with a side dish of Jack Hawkins and Richard Todd. On arrival home to Anchor House on two occasions last week and both times I popped on the TV to find “P Popsie” lining up for her bombing run towards the Mohne Dam!!! I collared Anchor junior to watch this only to be told that the special effects were rubbish. lurking on dispersals in the background and Mutt Summer’s Mosquito was clearly sporting post war RAF roundels but that’s a small price to pay! So as Ipswich slip away into Division the newly promoted Yellows must have really enjoyed the FA Cup Final and seeing what they will be up against shortly. Whatever happened to the FA Cup? In my day it would be a big build up with Cup Final Quizball, Cup Final It’s a Knockout, the Road to Wembley, meet the players and all that before Abide with Me and a 3 o’clock kick off! At the end of the game there would be none of this firework nonsense it would be a pint of milk in the tunnel followed by a bit of embrocation! Who can forget the Cup Finals of yesterday, Trebilcock winning it for Everton in 66, Astle for WBA in 68, Neil Young (taking time off from enigmatic singing) to score for Man City against Leicester in 69, Leeds v Chelsea on what looked like a beach in 70, this of course pitted two greats against each other. Ron “Chopper “ Harries and Norman ”Bites your Legs” Hunter both firm and occasionally fair…..! Another thing in those halcyon days the Semi Finals were played at Hillsborough and Villa Park and not Wembley!!! Sadly Doris has gone… Move Over Darling!!

Greek Spinach and Feta Filo Pie

Frances Martin and Claire Bullion: ELEMENTS Monday 10 – Saturday 15 June 2019 St Margaret’s Church, St Benedict’s Street, Norwich NR2 4TU Open daily 10am – 5pm, with a Private View Monday 10 June from 6pm Norwich-based artist Frances Martin has invited photographer Claire Bullion to exhibit in a joint show, with a theme of Elements. They will be presenting works on paper in drawing and bold colour media, plus photography, with figurative images representing earth, water, fire, air and the void of space. Frances and Claire met at a non art-related parents group when their children were very young, with children as a focus, and Claire’s daughters featuring in many of her atmospheric photographs. Frances uses the form of the figure both human and animal, in her work to convey investigating the ways that the body, or parts of it, can convey different emotions, like hope, or despair. Frances and Claire would like to thank Caroline Hoskin for kindly agreeing to curate the exhibition.

famous Greek dish, its full name is “spanakotyropita” or for short “spanakopita”. I’ll just call it Spinach and feta pie! Relatively easy to make and absolutely delicious at any time of the year – the perfect vegetarian dish you can always rely on. Serve with a Greek salad and some Tziki. 1 tablespoon olive oil small knob butter 1 onion – finely chopped 2 – 3 cloves garlic – crushed 250 g / a bag fresh spinach – washed and drained 2 eggs – beaten 2 heaped tablespoons pine nuts – lightly toasted 200 - 250 g feta – small diced or crumbled 60 g parmesan cheese – grated a few twists black pepper 5 – 6 sheets of filo pastry 20 g butter – melted (to brush on top) good pinch caraway seeds (optional) • Preheat the oven gas 5 / 190*c. Melt the oil and butter in a large frying pan or saucepan. Cook the onions to soften for a minute, add the garlic and the spinach until the spinach has just wilted down. Drain of any excess liquid. • Mix the spinach mix with the eggs, pinenuts and both cheeses. Season with a touch of ground black pepper. Spoon in to a 6 portioned ovenproof dish. • Top with the filo, using one sheet at a time laying in on top of the filling in a crumpled way, (no need for perfect flat sheets, the pie should look ruffled).

• Brush gently with the butter, trying not to squash the filo. Sprinkle on the seeds. • Bake for 30 minutes on the middle shelf until golden. Serve hot or warm. Tziki – To make this easy yogurt sauce, mix 1/2 tub (200 g) Greek yogurt with 1 fat clove crushed garlic and 4 cm of grated cucumber – mix and serve. Tziki is refreshing as a starter served with hot toasted pitta breads. Recipe by ZENA LEECH-CALTON © www.lovenorwichfood.co.uk for my food tours and cookery courses in Norwich

The final performance on Sunday 14 July sees Norwich’s Oak Circus Centre present a Community Cabaret where students join experienced circus professionals to demonstrate their skills. Tickets are available from Norwich Theatre Royal in person or by phone on 01603 63 00 00 and via www.circusnorwich.co.uk where you can also find full information on all events.

Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail 2019 The sixth Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail is set to return to south Norfolk in 2019. Annually attracting thousands of visitors to the region, this year’s trail will feature the work of 38 artists from across the UK. Organised by Waveney & Blyth Arts, the event takes place at The Raveningham Centre, ten miles south of Norwich, on a three-acre site of lawns, hidden groves, orchards and walkways. In 2019 the sculpture trail will take place over five weeks, from Friday 2nd August to Sunday 8th September and will include site-specific work, 3-D constructions and sculpture. Both established and up-and-coming artists will be exploring the theme of The Woven Woodland through their work using materials, structures and creative ideas in the meadows, woodland and natural spaces at Raveningham. The trail is open every day from 10am until 5pm at The Raveningham Centre, Beccles Road, Raveningham, Norfolk NR14 6NU. Entry is £6 for adults (£5 members of Waveney & Blyth Arts), under 18s are free. Pay on entry only. Now in its eleventh year, it’s one of the East of England’s most anticipated events. This year marks the 40th anniversary of punk princess Toyah’s music career and she’s bringing her full electric band to Holt to celebrate! In this very special and intimate evening audiences will be treated to Georgie’s hits and more. There’s classical music from the world renowned Britten Oboe Quartet at the Auden Theatre and international best selling novelist Kate Mosse will be talking about her life and work with Kate Roma. Musical comedy sisters Flo & Joan are Radio 4 regulars who will bring their brand-new show of dark, witty songs Alive on Stage. Stars from the eastern region are also a feature of the festival. T

he 21st year of Folk on the Pier saw some of my favourite artists from the 12 years that I have been going returning to play some great sets. Being busy running my event on the fringe festival sadly meant that I missed a few sets. My 5 highlights from what I did see were a magnificent and upbeat Breton and Celtic folk inspired set from Jamie Smith’s Mabon, and the Sandy Denny projects authentic take on the folk legends songs on the Friday night, a wonderfully wacky set of mostly new songs from the marvellous husband and wife duo Truckstop Honeymoon, a humorous mixed with traditional set from husband and wife duo Megson, and the superb Merry Hell playing a terrific set of songs that make you smile sitting neatly alongside thought provoking and anthemic songs calling for the country to unite, not divide, most notably on ‘We need each other now’, and how right they are. A great year, both on the fringe, and the pier. ..and thinking of festivals June and July are the prime months for them so here are 12 that are within reasonable travelling distanceJUNE- 1st-2nd Red Rooster- Euston Hall (Country and Americana), 1st- Strawberry Fair, Cambridge, 8th- Dereham music festivalPirate Joe, Bad Touch, & more, 22nd-23rdDeopham music festival- www.deopham. org JULY- 5th-7th- Folk in a Field- Willows, Dan Walsh, Jigantics, Katie Spencer etc www. folkinafield.co.uk 5-7th- Maverick festival- Rich Hall, Henry Brothers etc, 13th- The Magic of Thailand- Eaton Park, Norwich, 20thStrumpshaw Tree Fair- A celebration of wood crafts, 18th-21st- Latitude festival- Henham
