Norwich Theatre partners with the UEA for the Green Film Festival

Norwich Theatre partners with the UEA for the Green Film Festival

Norwich Theatre teams up with the University of East Anglia (UEA) for the Green Film Festival. The annual festival aims to raise awareness and generate conversation around global environmental challenges and solutions. The festival is a four-day celebration of environmental films and filmmakers from around the world. Events include screenings of films with Q&As and guest speakers, creative workshops and a market day. These take place in locations across Norwich’s city centre and at the UEA campus. All are open to the public and are free to attend.

The partnership is part of Norwich Theatre’s Creative Matters: Climates Stories. The yearlong season focuses on pressing issue of our time, asking how we can use creativity to explore the climate crisis and presenting ways we can all influence our collective future.

Sam Dawson, Head of Creative Engagement at Norwich Theatre, said: “Creativity enables artists and audiences to imagine beyond the limitations of their own worlds, bringing voices together and revealing new paths forward. Through our theatres and other cultural venues across Norfolk, we aim to offer a safe space for audiences to contemplate, be challenged, learn and negotiate new thoughts around the climate crisis – creating an environment where they are supported to grapple with both positive and negative feelings and constructively build their own path, and

bridges with others.”

Cow unflinchingly chronicles the details of Luma’s daily life, from grazing in green fields to giving birth, making milk and everything in between. The film screening of Cow is free to attend and will feature a drink and canapés on arrival and will have a Q&A discussion after the film.

Winter Gardening

I lost all my chickens during October last year as two were stolen and one died of loneliness shortly afterwards. Until then I had been going to the allotment every day to check on them, refill their food and water, give them some treats and, while I was there, inspect the state of any plants that were still growing. By about the middle of January I had eaten most of any remaining crops and therefore didn’t have much of a reason for visiting the site regularly.

I knew I still had some winter purslane, which, despite its name, doesn’t grow much in winter. It can survive harsh weather but needs to be a good size before winter starts, I discovered. The other vegetable still in the ground was caulifower. The plants looked sad but the growing tip was still intact. So, to give any potential ones a bit of a hand I weeded out the weakest plants and removed any dead leaves from the remaining ones. I then turned to paying attention to my compost, which is much more work intensive since there haven’t been any chickens to scratch around in the heaps and drop their little compost activators.

Imagine my surprise and delight, when I discovered this week that one of the caulifowers was beginning to produce a head. It’s very hard, still tightly wrapped in leaves and at the moment only about the size of a fist. But it’s defnitely a caulifower!

Local health and social care organisations are inviting people from Beccles and the wider surrounding areas to spring into action and find out more about how they can get involved in volunteering for their local community.

Norfolk and Waveney ICS (Integrated Care System) and will be hosting a drop-in session at Beccles Market on Friday 28th April between 9.00am and 2.30pm for individuals looking for new experiences and volunteering opportunities they have available in health and care.

Many people volunteer to make a difference, wanting to give something back to support a charity or group which has made a difference in their lives, or the lives of those close to them. What is sometimes unexpected, is just how much the volunteer themselves can gain from their activities too.

“I really would recommend volunteering to anyone as it allows you to make a difference to your local community and no matter how much time you are able to give, it really is valued, and it is good for your own mental health.

“As well as this, you learn new skills and meet new people and friends. You give a little but get you so much back, it is a very rewarding process.”

Representatives from organisations including Community Action Suffolk and Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust will be on hand to talk to individuals about the different volunteering options available this Spring.

If you aren’t able to join us at the drop-in session, a virtual event will be held on 26th April at 6.30pm

Meet Barney , a new arrival at Redwings Horse Sanctuary Meet Barney , a new arrival at Redwings Horse Sanctuary Redwings Horse Sanctuary

Little Barney, who is thought to be around five months old, was discovered collapsed and upside down in a pile of rubble on a site in Essex. He was very emaciated underneath his thick coat and covered in pressure sores as well.

An RSPCA officer and vets from House and Jackson managed to get him to his feet and warm him up then Redwings Senior Field Officer Jo Franklin transported him to House and Jackson's Equine Veterinary Hospital where he began immediate treatment. He was unable to stand unaided and had a large worm burden as well.

Barney moved to Redwings in midDecember to continue his treatment and to have surgery on an infected wound on his left hip followed by daily dressing changes to protect it. It has taken several weeks to heal but thanks to the incredibly dedicated effort from his care team, his dressings were finally removed on 25th January.

Despite an RSPCA investigation, no owner could be identified, and Barney has been offered a forever home at Redwings. He is now doing well - skipping and bucking around in his stable and going out for daily turnouts on the woodchips which is far removed from the very quiet and sad little pony who arrived a few weeks ago.

Redwings is a registered equine charity funded solely through public donations, If you'd like to help support their work and help them continue to be able to rescue ponies like Barney and provide the veterinary treatment and care they need you can do so by visiting their websitehttps://www.redwings. org.uk/donating

“You sell yourself short” was a comment/ criticism said to me by a newish member of the Gym. “In what way?” was my slightly defensive response. It was pointed out that much of our advertising and even calling ourselves a ‘Community’ Gym implied that we were primarily a Gym for older people who were trying to maintain their physical/ mental/social wellbeing and I have to admit that this is probably the impression we have unwittingly given. Someone coming in with fresh eyes can often see what those who have been involved for a long time in any organisation cannot. We may not be a big, flashy, commercial

Norwich Moves Norwich Moves

From ballet and breakdance to physical theatre and everything in between, Norwich Theatre is celebrating all things movement based and encourages you to try something you might not have seen before.

Shows under its new Norwich Moves branding provide an opportunity to experience storytelling in a way where words are not the focus. They have been selected to feature world-class and celebrated choreographers, dancers and artists. During April, Norwich Theatre Royal will welcome Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty (4 – 8 Apr). You will enter a wondrous world of magical fairies and vampires, where the timeless tale of good vs evil is turned upsidedown, creating a supernatural love story that even the passage of time itself cannot hinder.

At Norwich Theatre Playhouse, check out Joss Arnott's Tin Man (14 Apr - 16 Apr) and Rosie Kay's award-winning show, 5 Soldiers (20 – 22 April). Tin Man is a visually stunning dance production for families and children aged 7+ and explores a re-imagined story seen through the rusty eyes of the Tin Man. Rosie Kay's 5 Soldiers is a thrilling and humane portrait of army life, stories of four men and one woman serving on the

front line. Don't miss the post-show discussion to explore the themes in more depth.

Norwich Theatre is particularly proud and excited to host the world's biggest hiphop dance festival at Norwich Theatre Royal on 27 May. Breakin' Convention is a complete takeover of the building, with jaw-dropping performances, DJs, graffiti artists and freestyle sessions. It's not just about shows. If you want to get moving, why not try some of Norwich Theatre's amazing takepart opportunities. On offer is the popular Ballet for Over 50s (5 May – 14 Jul) and Dance Lab for Over 50s (15 May – 24 Jul), a session for those looking to gain new dance and movement skills. No experience is required for either activity.

Also for you to try is Unwind with Movement (8 Jun – 6 Jul) for a relaxed session focused on boosting your wellbeing and for your little ones Sing, Dance, Play (21 Apr – 23 Jun) to get them up and dancing to music. Look out for the Norwich Moves sticker on Norwich Theatre's website and brochure for more movement shows and activities to try. Without a valid LPA in place, your loved ones may find it difficult to step-in and help you in the future should the need arise. For example, if someone needed to access your money, manage your property or deal with your income they would have to get an order from the Court. The process of obtaining a Court order is expensive and can take a long time. It can also be stressful for your family at what is already a difficult time. Ultimately the Court decides who manages your affairs, which could cause conflict between family members and might even result in someone you wouldn’t necessarily choose being in control. The person managing your affairs under such a Court order would be monitored on an ongoing basis, which of course has associated costs and stresses. Having a valid LPA in place would avoid all of these potential issues.

Meditation at Inner Space

The situation with medical decisions is slightly different. The Court are very reluctant to give blanket orders enabling people to make medical and health/welfare decisions. They tend to only make orders when very specific issues need to be resolved. In contrast, if you have a health and welfare LPA in place, your Attorneys would always be able to advocate on your behalf, making it much more likely that you would receive the medical care you would want.

LPAs need to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (part of the Court of Protection) before they can be used. This process is currently taking approximately 20 weeks. It is therefore very sensible to make and register your LPAs in advance of any need for their use.

Not For Profit Law can guide you through the process of making and registering LPAs suited to your specific needs. If you would like to have an informal discussion, or book an appointment, please contact them on 01603 555440 or by email at enquiries@notforprofitlaw.co.uk.

Suitable for everyone, our weekly meditation classes at Inner Space are a perfect opportunity to take a break from busy daily life and experience the benefits of meditation. The purpose of meditation is to cultivate positive attitudes and this helps us overcome bad mental habits. Through our meditations we learn that happiness is a state of mind and that its real source lies within us and not in external things or situations. Then because our mind is peaceful and undisturbed we have fewer worries and less stress. We cover a different topic of teachings, with associated meditations, each week and there is also time for Q&A with a tea/coffee. This term we are exploring, 'Overcoming What Holds us Back', learning how to recognise our own potential to overcome these bad mental habits. Therefore we are able to relate to ourself in a more positive way, empowering us to become the person we really want to be. Taught by Simon James (Amoghasiddhi Kadampa Buddhist Centre, Attleborough).

NO ESCAPE- VR ESCAPE ROOMS, OAK STREET- FEB 26th- Running from 5-10 pm on the final Sunday of each month Ryan and Shane’s nights have been a welcome addition to the local music scene. Catching the second half of the night it was great to see CITIZEN SMITH a very 60s garage and psychedelia inspired new band including not only for those with long memories former Colourform members Paul and Giles, but Meltones man Bob and the ubiquitous Shane on keyboards. Volume and energy in abundance as well as catchy songs, most notably opener ‘Wasting So Much Time’, hopefully other gigs will follow. Look out for them. It has been a long time since I have seen virtuoso kora player SEFO KANUTE but one thing has not changed for sure as his deft and dextrous playing still holds and spellbinds the audience. In addition to his intricate playing he incorporated the audience to subtly sing along as part of a mellow set ideal for a Sunday teatime slot.

NATHAN PICKETT concluded the night with an acoustic blues set combining standards such as the emotive ‘St James Infirmary’ with original songs incorporating some fine finger picking and robust vocals. A fine evening. We Penguins Go Pop play on March 26th between 5-10 pm at 9pm + Prawns, Huia Music Club, More Soup Music, Shane O’Linski and Pearl in the Egg.

Zena’s Spring Recipe Zena’s Spring Recipe

Spring is in the air and warm salads are all the rage, perfectly cooked local seasonal veggies, a tad of carbs to fill you up and a dressing that makes you zing.

Warm Asparagus and New Potato Salad

I’ve suggested jerseys as they are so delicious and well known, use local alternatives like charlotte but avoid small potatoes supermarkets call or influence as new as they are only the runt of the litter and have little flavour.

450g jersey royals – scrubbed

1 x bunch Norfolk asparagus – trimmed

5 spring onions – trimmed and cut in to 3cm lengths

6 – 8 radishes – thinly sliced

Dressing

1 lemon – juiced

3 tablespoons cold pressed rapeseed oil (or olive)

pinch dried Colman’s mustard powder

1 teaspoon runny local honey

1 tablespoons flat parsley - chopped

seasoning

• Steam or boil the potatoes until just cooked, cut in to chunky slices and set aside. (cooking time approx. 10 – 12 minutes)

• Meanwhile steam or boil the asparagus for 4 – 5 minutes until just cooked and then cut each one in to three.

• For the dressing simply whisk all the ingredients together and season to taste.

• Simply toss all the ingredients together, while the potatoes and asparagus are still warm and coat in the dressing.

• Serve as a simply tasty starter or with a chunk of bread for lunch.

Asparagus know how

Look for a firm bunch, deep green in colour, local is always best, Norfolk and Suffolk offer those fat ones full of flavour and crunch. Simply trim or snap the hard bottom 2 – 3 cm off and gently wash. Steam or boil until just tender but with a bite. Asparagus can also be roasted, barbequed and grilled from raw, just drizzle on some oil and season well before cooking.

Variations

Go Nuts – try adding toasted almond slices. Crabby – toss with the meat from a large dressed crab.

Aniseed – try replacing the parsley with tarragon.

More Veggie – toss in a tablespoon of sundried tomatoes or roasted red pepper slices or both.
