hen it’s said that women are from Venus and men are from Mars this isn’t strictly true as all men really are from planet boy and the sight of a bit of snow outside is enough to bring any man’s age and IQ level to the same number – 12.

I spent the whole snowy week grinning from ear to ear as I drove down country lanes because the main roads were blocked with traffic, having snowball fights outside the pub (thankfully no real fights because of it) taking my son sledging and generally having a great time slipping and sliding around. I know some people don’t like it and panic when

behind the wheel, but I guess my brain doesn’t work that way.

I hope you enjoy this edition, it’s full of good stuff, listings, events, jolly articles and the odd grump or two.

The Oak Circus Centre Open Weekend

H

ave you ever thought about running away with the circus? In Norwich you don’t have to, the circus has come to you!

The Oak Circus Centre is Norfolk’s only venue providing training in circus skills for everyone from beginners to professionals, run by experienced circus performers. It’s popular year-round courses and classes appeal to people who see circus training as an interesting alternative to the gym as well as those with ambitions to perform professionally.

The centre is hosting an open weekend on 28 and 29 April giving everyone an opportunity to find out what’s on offer and to try out some of the classes. There will also be performances from resident company Lost in Translation Circus and current Oak students.

Throughout the weekend there will be dropin taster sessions for people of all ages. For adults these range from classic manipulation circus skills like juggling, hula hooping and plate spinning to the daring dizzy heights of trapeze and other aerial disciplines. There’s

a gentle introduction in circus skills for 3-5 year olds and aerial hoop, trapeze, and juggling for older children and teenagers.

A cabaret evening will feature performances from Oak students and a special work in progress presentation of Lost in Translation’s new show Inside Out, that will tour the UK and Europe this autumn.

Over the weekend there will also be a circus trail around church’s run by Norwich Historic Church’s Trust. Armed with a downloadable map young people and families can visit 9 sites and learn about the city’s circus history and heritage. NHCT volunteers will be on hand to talk about the history of the buildings.

‘Circus training is a great way for adults to keep fit as well as learning some amazing skills’ said The Oak’s Head of Education Roisin Morris ‘and for young people they are a great way to improve motor skills, balance, co-ordination and strength as well as developing confidence and pride’.

Victorian Magic returns to the Beccles Public Hall & Theatre

TRAVEL BY GAVIN Travel has always been a real passion of mine even from the first time I stepped foot on a Go airlines flight out of Stansted airport on a cold January morning travelling to Spain.

I was given my first break in the travel industry working as a European Travel Consultant in London, I wrote a letter to their HR team telling them what I had achieved and from my interview my passion for travel shone through, this included numerous day trips to Europe I arranged for myself and colleagues in previous roles.

This role allowed me to travel extensively across Asia, the Middle East, Indian Ocean, USA and Caribbean and a random trip to Kiev, which included a visit to Chernobyl and the exclusion zone, this was eye opening and creepy all rolled into one.

After years of various roles within the industry I took a leap of faith and took 6 months out of the industry to live in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand teaching English to adults, this was an amazing experience and really helped me experience a different culture and way of life. I came back from this and had a few years break working as a customer service trainer for a well-known insurance company.

The reason I started Travel by Gavin is that I feel the travel industry has been stripped of its heart and soul, along with the experience and passion. This is what I aim to put back into the industry.

he first of the forced English Rhubarb is here – so spring is on its way. Forcing Rhubarb was discovered accidentally in the 1800’s. Growing Rhubarb in the dark makes it sprout earlier, it grows a lovely pink colour and tastes better too. Rhubarb is technically a fruit or an edible stem but remember the leaves are poisonous - So don’t compost them. Rhubarb needs the addition of something sweet as the taste is very tart making it perfect for chutney or relish.

How English is Rhubarb? well very! - Wakefield where my husbands from has a yearly Rhubarb Festival but it is said its origin may be from Russia or even China.

RHUBARB RELISH (makes 2 jam jars full) 350 g / approx 3 stalks- Rhubarb – chopped small 350 g light brown sugar 350 g / 2 large onions – chopped small 250 ml red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon Norfolk Honey 1/2 teaspoon each of ground cinnamon, ginger and all spice 1/4 teaspoon each of ground cloves (6 no.) and black pepper Add all the ingredients in to a large thickbottomed saucepan. Bring to the boil and then reduce down to a rapid simmer for approx. 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened and chutnified* (the rhubarb will break down to a smooth chutney). Cool slightly before transferring in to sterilized jars.

Store in the fridge until needed.

Rhubarb relish works perfectly with smoked fish although I like mine with Mrs Temples Walsingham or her new Wells Alpine cheese and a few crackers. *Chutnified as you may have worked out is a made up name, I was teaching a Christmas Edible Gifts course and needed to use a name for describing when the Prune and Date Chutney was ready, when it got to the thick and sticky stage, just before it sticks to the bottom, catches and burns! Hence Chutnified = when its ready.

Tip - Try roasting 3 – 4 cm chunks of Rhubarb in the oven, drizzled with a little apple juice and maple syrup, bake for 20 minutes and serve with cinnamon infused Greek Yogurt – for a healthier dessert.

I am a fairly successful organic fruit and vegetable gardener. I am a lazy and unscientific gardener. I am a stingy gardener. I don’t want to pay for new seeds or chemicals, whether fertiliser or pesticide. In a very satisfying game of death and rebirth, I prefer to save seeds and to fertilise the soil in the form of compost made from everything I haven’t eaten. I also don’t want to dig if I don’t have to. It only disturbs the worms which are much better at loosening the soil anyway. I prefer plants that return magically and it is perennial vegetables that I aim to inspire you about today.

When I took over my garden more than 20 years ago I experimented with scattering a variety of seeds randomly.

Since then three edible crops keep popping up every year around March without me having to do anything.

These, more than snowdrops and daffodils, are the harbingers of spring for me. They are lambs lettuce, American land cress and Good King Henry. Each year the plants choose a different place to germinate. I have found them in the patio gravel, the herb patch, the lawn, the flower border and behind the compost bin.

I am always a little surprised to see them, thank them for coming back and then proceed to pick and eat them!

CLASSIC IBIZA WITH MINISTRY OF SOUND AT BLICKLING SET TO SELL-OUT Don’t miss this family friendly party at Blickling Hall on Saturday11th August.

First up is our crowdfunding campaign ‘Welcome Wheels’, aiming to equip every refugee and asylum seeker in Norwich with a secondhand bike, lock, lights, helmet and some on-road training.

There’s a huge need for this. Asylum seekers have just £36.95 a week to live on, and are often housed on the outskirts of the city, so getting anywhere is a challenge.

The Crowdfunder pledges have been pouring in, and our next task is getting the bikes refurbished and up to scratch, safety-wise. The work is carried out by our great team of volunteers under the guidance of an experienced tutor, and the bikes themselves come from our stock of donated bicycles. We can always do with more bikes, so if you have an unwanted one gathering cobwebs please bring it down to our shop any time during opening hours.

Our other project is Norfolk Cycle Loan Scheme. Thanks to funding secured by the County Council, Bicycle Links is able to loan a good quality hybrid cycle to any Norwich resident for four weeks, all for just £10 deposit. If you’re thinking about buying a bike this is a great way to test the water.

Riches and Rarities of the Known World

T

he Paston Treasure: Riches and Rarities of the Known World is a major exhibition, organized in partnership with the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, CT USA, which opens at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery on 23 June 2018 (until 23 September).

The exhibition brings together rare European works of art originally featured in a large, enigmatic painting by an unknown artist (trained in the Dutch school, painted circa 1665), which chronicles one of the greatest private art collections of 17th century England, amassed by the Pastons, an influential, landowning family in Norfolk.

Miraculously five of the actual objects from the original painting survive and for the first time in three centuries these significant works will be reunited with the painting.

Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Collection and many others.

The exhibition, comprising a total of more than 130 objects sourced from a host of national and international museums and private collections provides an extraordinary glimpse into what was undisputedly one of the most splendid treasure houses to have ever existed in this country.

BECCLES ANTIQUES STREET MARKET SUNDAY 6th May 2018 8am – 4pm It feels like it’s been a long wait since the last Beccles Antiques Market but for all you bargain hunters out there the wait is nearly over as the Beccles Antiques Street Market returns on Sunday May 6th.

The market has gone from strength to strength and now in its ninth year plays host to a hundred general and specialist dealers selling a wide range of good quality antiques and collectables including furniture, silver, china, linen, jewellery, books, clocks, retro and vintage design/clothing and decorative items. Due to its popularity and following requests from the traders an additional date was added to the calendar, with this year’s second market booked for Sunday 12th August.

Many of the local shops, restaurants and bars are open that day so you can take a break and rest your feet. First class local artisan street food, ice cream, tea and coffee will also be on offer throughout the day.

y the time you read this page just after Easter we should be into some brighter and warmer weather, and what could be better than to explore this very fine church? The anciently important abbey of St. Benet’s (Benedict’s) is not far from this village and its close associations with many successive bishops of Norwich there in earlier centuries could explain why this adjacent church in Ludham is so grand. The nave is mostly 15th century and the imposing tower is very likely to be a century earlier.

Upon entering the building the beautiful 15th century font demands your attention, and, very helpfully, an explanatory notice nearby gives much useful information about it. From the font, the view up the nave (pictured above) is dominated by the sturdy hammer beam and arch-braced roof system, which contains some exquisitely pierced carvings, including, if you look closely, a wheel device that represents St. Catherine. The carved rood screen before the chancel is one of the finest in the county. It was built in 1493 at a cost of £14 donated by John and Cycyly Salmon. It contains twelve wonderful painted panels depicting saints and kings. However, one figure at the extreme right end of the screen is very unusual and worth seeking out.

Norfolk artists get set to invite the public into their studios Hundreds of artists are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2018. The event, firmly established as one of the biggest open studios schemes in the country, is celebrating its 24th anniversary this year.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios provides the opportunity for artists to show and sell their work directly from their studios. It also encourages everyone, from ardent art-lovers to the curious first-time visitor, to get out and about, explore the county, see art and meet artists in the informal surroundings of their work space.

More than 420 artists will be taking part this year across 241 venues throughout Norfolk. As well as the hundreds of artists taking part, 16 Norfolk schools will be exhibiting and 15 Art Trails will be running, allowing audiences to visit a number of artists in a particular area, stopping at studios and local attractions along the way.

Studios are free to visit and all details, including studio opening days, directions, Art Trails and additional events and demonstrations, can be found in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure and website. The event runs from 26 May until 10 June.

Spring is in the air allegedly

The innovative, multi award winning choir will perform their newly created show Time Piece between noon and midnight as the closing performances of this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival.

The performances will take place on the hour every hour in various parts of the cloisters and garth of Norwich Cathedral.

try as much as I can to avoid writing about politics in this little column, but I may have to touch upon it this time. I hear lots of talk and read lots of words that make great play of mentioning ‘The People’, whether it’s something that is “the will of ‘The People’”, or that “’The People’ have spoken”. However, does that really mean anything at all? If ‘The People’ is ALL People, then how can anything ever be “the will of ‘The People’”, there will always be those who disagree? It is really possible that ‘The People’ will speak with one voice?

The two main events I’m talking about here are, of course, Brexit, and the last General Election (or, probably, any Election). Brexit is, we are told, “the will of ‘The People’”, so does that mean that 52% of the population of the UK constitutes ‘The People’? In fact, there was a 72.2% turnout for the Referendum, so 52% of 72.2%, or 37.5% of the population are, apparently, ‘The People’. And before you start, yes, I know the Leave vote won, that’s not my point. My point is that it was just over half of the people that wanted to Leave, not ‘The People’. And then the last Election. Mrs May was very keen to tell us that she was in power because “‘The People’ had spoken”. Again,

But it’s not just mathematics. Over the past few years, we have been told that certain individuals are “a man of ‘The People’”.

Mainly Nigel Farage, and, it would appear, simply because he drinks beer and smokes.

Yes, that’s the Public School educated, exCommodities Broker, Nigel Farage. Not sure which ‘People’, he’s supposed to be a man of! And now we’re supposed to believe that Jacob Rees-Mogg is “a man of ‘The People’”.

And while we’re on the subject, I’ve never understood ‘Snowflake’ as an insult.

True Stories Live celebrates Women of the World festival with all female line-up Norwich’s popular monthly storytelling event True Stories Live is presenting a special all female line up on Sunday 29 April in the main hall at Norwich Arts Centre for the city’s first Women of the World Festival.

Special guests for the evening, are Australian born, UK based, comedian Bec Hill and American writer, artist, filmmaker and performance maker Paula Varjack.

They will tell stories about their true-life experiences as part of a bill that will also include past female TSL participants telling their True Life Stories that relate to the theme ‘Now is the time’..

As with all TSL events the night will be compéred by Norwich based TV script writer, poet and performer Molly Naylor.

True Stories Live is the intimate monthly storytelling evening founded at Norwich Arts Centre that has grown to become a regular sell out success and has toured, around the country and to the Edinburgh Book Festival. At the event ordinary people tell their own anecdotal stories to a warm and friendly audience, relating to a different theme each time.

een to few gigs since the last issue but I really enjoyed the Ideal Surreal night at Karma Café recently with up to 12 acts performing over 3 floors.

Highlights for me were Tres Pantalons, Fools Moon, Magoo and an acoustic Dr Clyde. Tres Pantalons have expanded into a 7 piece outfit including a 4 piece bold brass section and their instrumental virtuosity, offbeat syncopated rhythm’s, quirky jazz and funk inspired tunes, most notably ‘Clive’ mark them out as one’s to watch out for. Fools Moon bely their age with blues soaked crack throated songs and tunes with twin lead guitarists trading riffs suggesting that they have raided their parents record collections and found some early Fleetwood Mac, and maybe even some Wishbone Ash, and prog. Groovy.

Jasper and Joe meanwhile perched on bar stools played a relaxed and hypnotic acoustic set of Dr Clyde and solo songs in the basement reminding us how many fine songs they have and how we miss that tall man Jasper’s holler. ..and so to the mighty Magoo. What can I say, this was a real barrage of a set, no letting up, a full on attrition of a set as Andy’s buzz saw rhythm guitar and almost helium inhaled vocals were counteracted by one of the most original guitarists ever to emerge from Norfolk in Dave Lake punctuating the songs with the most unique range of sounds coaxed or beaten out of a guitar and a set of pedals since Fripp, Belew, and Hendrix.

Add to this the solid yet inventive rhythm section of Owen and Stacey they are still, 26 years on, one of the most dynamic and

watchable bands in the area. Youngsters, go see ‘em, you could learn something.

Mention also for Guranfoe who had sadly played by the time I arrived. Seen them before and love the often complex prog inspired tunes, with bizarre time signatures, yes I said it, the P word. You can label them Math rock or post rock, but much of what they do derives from Prog, which leads me on to why people wish to give music a new label, believing it to have a hipper connotation when frankly we all know what it really is. There is a rush, particularly among Norfolk acts it seems to want to be labelled Americana as it sounds cooler than country, when frankly that is what most of them are. There are so many would be Johnny, Dolly and Tammy’s in Norfolk at the moment. I heard a story of an American musician coming to the county as he had heard good things about the music scene but leaving shortly afterwards saying that there were more people in Norfolk wanting to sound American than in America. Come on musicians in Norfolk you don’t need to do this. Be original, and be yourselves, look to Norfolk, not the dreaded Nashville, for inspiration. It’s mostly unoriginal, dull and getting everywhere. Rant over.
