T

his is a sad but celebratory edition of our magazine as this is the last time you will be able to enjoy our “Local History Matters” by David Berwick on page 27. David has been submitting articles since 2007 and by his own calculation thinks this is over 100 submissions. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all David’s articles and have visited many of local historic places because of him. When I finally managed to get a job which gave me the time to go to night school I did an A level in history and loved it. History is one of those learning tools that can guide you through life. Nothing that is happening now hasn’t happened in one form or another in the past and learning from the past, the mistakes and the things that went right, is a lesson often forgotten. Thank you David for keeping my interest in history alive and current.

I

would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year and take this chance to thank all our readers, contributors and advertisers for all your help and support in 2019. Our magazine has made a wonderful service in kind donation of over £37,000 this year to local charities through advertising, listings, design services and the really good will of all the staff at Anglia Print Ltd. I hope it has helped. Whatever you’re up to this festive season I hope you have a great time and I would like to thank you all, from all here at Anglia Print Ltd, for your support over the year.

Have a great Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

Better Together is here to help with a friendly team of Life Connectors who work with you to identify what your interests are, what sort of activities you might enjoy and what is preventing you taking part. ‘It may be practical things like having transport or mobility issues or it could be about having the confidence to join a new group’ explains Maria. ‘The Life Connectors can help you overcome these barriers and connect you to groups, activities and volunteering opportunities in your area.’

Monty Shaft’s Did You Know.... ..that it’s time for a review of the year AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, that’s politics dealt with! On to football. The first 5 months of the year were amazing. Norwich City played some of the best football I have ever seen at Carrow Road. By any team, not just Norwich. Which, of course, led to us winning the League and gaining promotion to the so-called Promised Land of the Premier League. Since then, apart from one glorious evening in September, has been AAAAARRRRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Hopefully, if we ever manage to get a fully fit back four of defenders, not midfielders just filling in, everything will fall back into place. Music next. After a not great year, I thought, in 2018, 2019 really hit back with a vengeance – what is it about the end of a decade? (before you start, yes, I know most of you will be suggesting it’s next year) Anyway, if you haven’t already heard them yet, you should seek out this year’s albums by Sharon Van Etten, Julia Jacklin, The Leisure Society, Fontaines DC, San Fermin, NiluferYanya, Pixx, Liz Lawrence, Beirut, Tom Williams, Big Thief, The Divine Comedy. But more importantly, of course, the debut album by German Film Stars is a must!! Also, I have to mention the Wild Paths Festival, new to the city this year. It seems to have been a great success. I certainly enjoyed it and look forward to it becoming an annual event. Anyway, music, football, politics: that was my year. Hope you enjoyed yours and are able to enjoy a wonderful Christmas! On to 2020. 8

Glyndebourne’s annual visit to Norwich brings another trio of sparkling operas to town.

O

n the road for its 51st consecutive year, the Glyndebourne Tour plays Norwich Theatre Royal from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th December with three outstanding productions: Donizetti’s L’elisird’amore, Verdi’s Rigoletto and Handel’s Rinaldo. Much of Rinaldo- the first Italian-language opera that Handel wrote specifically for the London stage and first performed at the Queen’s Theatre, Haymarket, on 24th February 1711 - is made up of borrowings and adaptations from operas and other works that the composer wrote during his time spent in Italy from 1706 to 1710 before coming to London in 1712 where he stayed until his death in 1759. The scenario combines love, battle and redemptionwhile the original libretto by Giacomo Rossi has been reset to a scenario by Aaron Hill loosely based on Torquato Tasso’s epic poem, Gerusalemmeliberate. Handel dominated the opera scene in England and out of all his music-dramas Rinaldo was the most frequently performed during his lifetime. In Glyndebourne’s bang up-to-date production, directed by a big-hitter of the opera world, Canadian-born, Robert Carsen, the setting’s a school classroom and the subject being discussed is the history of the First Crusade. Singing the title-role is countertenor, Jake Arditti, whom we greet in the staging of the overture being bullied to bits on a vicious scale by some beastly classmates for

Please quote this magazine when you contact our advertisers

hiding under the lid of his desk a picture of his girlfriend, Almirena (Anna Devin). But the class in general are not really bothered too much of absorbing a lesson about the First Crusade. They were dreaming of other things and in the case of Rinaldo he enters a sort of Walter Mitty world reappearing as a knight in shining armour protected by a gleaming silver breastplate over his school blazer setting out to rescue the love of his life from two equally-beastly members of staff who morph respectively into the Saracen general, Argante (Aubrey Allicock) and the seductive Saracen sorceress, Armida (Jacqueline Stucker), attractively attired in a tight-fitting, black-latex dress, handing out corporal punishment like there’s no tomorrow. An unorthodox but entertaining production, one is in for a real treat with this staging of Rinaldo. To whet your appetite, the curtain comes down on Act I showing the boys pedalling like mad on their all-steel-frame bikes. I like to think they’re Raleigh’s. Horses, who needs them? And the scene culminates with a tribute to ET riding high above front stage. Who says opera is boring? However, the ‘opener’ to the week falls to Donizetti’s L’elisird’amore first performed in Milan in 1832. This production was first seen at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2007. Genoaborn soprano, Benedetta Torre (making her Glyndebourne début) is cast in the flirtatious role of Adina while Korean tenor, Sehoon Moon, is love-struck Nemorino.

Verdi’s incomparable and well-loved tragic opera, Rigoletto, completes the week’s repertoire. Interestingly, the hunchback jester was originally called ‘Triboulet’ but renamed ‘Rigoletto’ (originating from the French word ‘rigoler’), serving as a parody for JulesÉdouardAlboize de Pujol’s play, Rigoletti, ou Le dernier des fous (Rigolettior The Last of the Fools), produced in 1835. Surprisingly, this is Glyndebourne’s first-ever production of this seemingly-immortal work and has been specially directed for the Tour by German-born director, Christiane Lutz, who, incidentally, is married to opera superstar, Jonas Kauffman. She has reimagined Verdi’s classic drama for our own age,so this production should generate extra appeal. A great cast includes Georgian baritone, NikolozLagvilava, in the title-role with South African soprano, VuvuMpofu, his doomed daughter, Gilda. Performance schedule: Donizetti’s L’elisird’amore (Tuesday 3rd December / Thursday 5th December); Verdi’s Rigoletto (Wednesday 4th December / Saturday 7th December); Handel’s Rinaldo (Friday 6th December). All performances start at 7.15pm except for the second performance of L’elisird’amore (Thursday 5th December) which starts at 2.00pm. Grapes Hill Community Garden News

W

e would like to take the opportunity to thank this year’s business sponsors.

We invite local businesses to sponsor the garden for as little as £50 a year to help fund general running costs. In return, they may host an event in the garden, such as a party for clients and/ or employees. A big shout out to Jill Watkinson Sales and Marketing, Heritage Will Writers, Loveday & Partners, Rhino Greenhouses, Auction House East Anglia, Carnival Consulting and Triple Bottom Line Accounting Ltd. We are planning lots of events, outreach and gardening sessions with our new National Lottery Community Funded roles for 2020. We are looking for a volunteer secretary to take over from Fran, founder of the community garden, initiator of the first community consultations, and who successfully secured funding for the garden in 2010 and since. This is an excellent opportunity to join a vibrant new team and bring a fresh perspective to what is achieved. This team includes our new lottery-funded appointments for the next 3 years.

Although my hens were not bred as little egg laying machines, they are currently producing an egg each every day and have done so for over seven weeks. Initially I was very disappointed when one became broody and the other one started to molt shortly after I got them, as chickens don’t lay eggs in that state but they are making up for it now. I love a soft boiled egg and you may remember Delia Smith attempting to teach the nation how to do it right. Boiling an egg is easy, we shouted at the tele! But apparently not. A friend recently recommended an app which would help me scientifically determine the optimum conditions for producing a perfectly boiled egg. You key in the temperature of your fridge, the size of the egg, the kind of hob you have, where in the world you are and how old the egg is. Knowing all that just to boil an egg is intimidating and I was nervous and lost all confidence in my egg boiling prowess when I cooked one for her recently. Luckily my unscientific approach was successful, which puzzled her greatly. This is obviously a controversial topic and I had no idea there was so much that could be said about it. But now I’m intrigued. So, how do you boil yours and what do you feel strongly about? I’d love to know. The one thing I know is that really fresh eggs do not make good soft boiled eggs. Birgit Griem

rt-rock mavericks The Neutrinos have over 100 sell-out London Royal Festival Hall shows under their belts with their critically acclaimed KlangHaus show. They’ve performed in New York, around Canada and mainland Europe as well as numerous UK dates. Now they are set to return to their spiritual home at Norwich Arts Centre for a show on 12 December.

Joining them on the bill are very special guests Birds Of Hell. The shamanic BoH have enjoyed a busy year, releasing their eponymous debut album and lead single ‘Do I Get To Ride On A Unicorn?’ with it’s epic video of pagan spirit animals dancing under the moonlight. Whilst touring UK they’ve also managed to write a raft of new material that they’ll be premiering at this gig.

Hailed as' total game changers' by The Guardian and 'truly outstanding’ by The Daily Telegraph, The Neutrinos will be celebrating the preview release of their new single Pulse Addict. This is set for 2020 release, but limited edition 12” vinyl copies will be exclusively available at the show.

As well as two separate energy-fuelled sets to unsettle and rouse, the bands will be sparking off each other and sharing songs specially written together for this show. You might even get to join in...

Today The Neutrinos are perhaps best known for their groundbreaking, site responsive KlangHaus collaboration with artist Sal Pittman. Described as ‘the most innovative presentation of live music I’ve ever seen’ by The Guardian and as 'A blast of aural and visual magic’ in a five star review Times review, KlangHaus debuted in a month long run at the Edinburgh Festival. The show transferred for two, site specific month long, sold out residencies at The Royal Festival Hall and to other venues around the country.

Neutrinos singer Karen Reilly said ‘This is a chance to see us not only share a bill with one of our kindred Norwich bands but also collaborate and share a stage. Take my trunk and branches the tree replied. Although he was sad, the young man wielded his axe, leaving just a stump in the ground. It was many winters before the tree saw him again. Eventually, he returned walking very slowly. All I need is somewhere to rest the old man said. The tree said nothing but simply offered itself as a seat. We all have a faithful ‘tree’ inside of us, beating out the rhythm of our lives, taking care of us and never letting us down. Yoga is a wonderful way of caring for your inner tree. As a former nanny and childcare professional, local single mum, Jenny Jones realised that she wanted to incorporate her love of photography and babies into a new lifestyle / career. She also wanted to work around caring for her two-year-old son, Raife. “When Raife was about 18 months I started to feel the desire to merge my two favourite things - children and photography.” Jenny was trained by award-winning photographer, Shellie Wall from whom she learnt the art of newborn photography. "I thought, if I can make this my career it would be so satisfying and now I’m doing this in my own studio and it is perfect” Jenny is now specialising in photos of babies - newborns and little ones who won’t be so little for too long. “I absolutely love the babies and meeting the lovely families.” Jenny's career switch follows more than a decade working as a nanny in the UK and Australia. Jenny added: "I have a natural empathy with babies and I understand the importance of creating a permanent reminder for parents of a special period in their child’s life." Looking ahead to next Spring, there are plans for ten talks by Mary Fewster on 'Defence of the Realm'. These talks will focus on East Anglia, concentrating on the period from the Middle Ages to the early years of the 20th century. The aim is to show what evidence of warfare and defence there is, both 'on the ground' and in documents. Also to be explored is the impact of military activities on civic and town life and on family relationships. The talks, each lasting 1½ hours, will be given on Mondays in the Clubroom of the Jubilee Hall (NR14 6NB), Loddon, starting on January 13th at 2 p.m. There will be a half-term break on Feb. 17th; the final talk will thus be on March 23rd. The fee for the ten talks will be £58. Enrolment for the course now has to be completed at least two weeks before the starting date. The simplest way to enrol is to phone 0300 303 34 64 and choose option 1 from the 'menu'. You will then speak to a person, who will ask for the course title (Defence of the Realm) and reference number (C2226747). Payment may be made at the same time, but you may ask to pay by cheque to the Branch Treasurer at the first meeting if you prefer. It is also possible to enrol on line, starting with: www.wea.org.uk. You will need the same course details as are given in the previous paragraph but you will be asked to pay on line when you have reached the end of the process. There is ample parking space at the Jubilee Hall. Everybody is welcome. No previous knowledge is required; there are no exams to take. For any further information, please phone (01508) 521036 or 558453 24

Norwich Science Festival a super success!

his year’s Norwich Science Festival saw everything from chimpanzee calls with Dr Jane Goodall, through to an ostrich dissection and the chance to interact with robots. Organisers of the Norwich Science Festival say that there were over 137,000 visits to events throughout the nine-day Festival, from hands-on activities at host venue The Forum, to shows at Norwich Playhouse, Norwich Arts Centre, Stage Two Theatre Royal and Norwich Puppet Theatre amongst others. The Festival, in its fourth year, was the biggest yet, with over 180 events for all ages and all levels of knowledge, during October halfterm, and was co-ordinated by The Forum and partners such as Norwich Research Park and UEA. As well as hands-on science, talks, shows and debates, the Festival also hosted its first ‘science lates’ event ‘Science After Six’ – which was a chance for grown-ups to enjoy a science comedy, rap science, cocktails and even an ‘organ off’ called Offal Waffle, where the battle for the best organ was fought! The Festival also ran a Learning Programme, for schools, youth groups and homeeducated learners, which saw over 3100 students from reception classes to sixth formers get inspired by science. producer, said: “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed this year’s Festival, and want to say a huge thank you to everyone that was involved, took part, showcased science, volunteered, or simply came along to enjoy science and discover more about the world. We look forward to welcoming you back for 2020!” Prof David Richardson, UEA Vice-Chancellor, said: “UEA’s partnership and involvement with the Norwich Science Festival is a great source of pride for our University. The opportunity to engage the public with the important work carried out by our academics, staff and students has the potential to create real impact. We look forward to the fifth year of the Festival in 2020, and I for one can’t wait to see the passion and creativity of our UEA family on show once again.” The Festival was made possible by headline sponsorship from Anglian Water, plus additional sponsorship from Norwich Accountancy Services, University Technical College Norfolk, Vattenfall, Briar Chemicals, Fitness Space, Veolia, Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure, KLM UK Engineering and EIRA. To keep up-to-date with 2020 announcements, follow @NorwichSciFest on Twitter, or Norwich Science Festival on Facebook and Instagram, and keep an eye on norwichsciencefestival.co.uk for headline announcements in July and the full programme at the end of August.

‘Angels from the Realms of Glory!’

S

o runs the first line of a well-known Christmas Carol, and angels have certainly had a very significant part within biblical literature. The angel Gabriel visited the Virgin Mary and told her she would conceive of a son and must call him Emmanuel – which means ‘God is with us’. Angels sang in heavenly chorus above the fields where the lowly shepherds were grazing their flocks near Bethlehem on the night that Mary’s Son was born. Jacob had a vision of angels as he slept on stony ground in the desert. In his dream he saw an immense ladder that stood on the earth yet reached to the very door of heaven where he could see God standing in glory. Angels, ascending to, and descending from, God’s presence were using the ladder. In this particular story we get to understand the ‘job description’ of angels – they are heavenly messengers. I wouldn’t mind betting that there is at least one angel somewhere in each and every one of the sevenhundred mediaeval Anglican churches in Norfolk. Often they are very obvious – perhaps carved on the bowl of the font just inside the main door. There is almost certainly one to be found in a stained glass window - like the very fine ancient example on this page from Cawston

church, Norfolk. Our amazing county also contains some of the most stunning ‘Angel Roofs’ of East Anglia. Cawston, again, is a favourite location together with King’s Lynn (St. Nicholas), Gissing, Knapton, Swaffham and Wymondham Abbey – together with another thirty-nine within our county border. I have met many people who maintain they have had an ‘angel encounter’ at some profound point in their lives. I think I can include myself. So angels do not just turn up at Christmas, although you may well put one on the tree in your lounge or have some as part of a seasonal garden light display. You will not be surprised to learn that there are many angels in Norwich Cathedral – and I do not just mean the cute, young angeliclooking boy choristers! A rather finely wrought demi-angel (depicted waist upwards) dating from ca. 1480 can be found under one of the mediaeval seats in the choir area once used by the monks – as illustrated on this page. Since early 2007 I have been very lucky to have had the opportunity in this magazine to highlight more than a hundred topics of local history focused on our richly endowed county. This is my final submission. Even if you do not have an encounter with an angel this Christmas, may I sign off by hoping that you are at least visited by good health and happiness during the festive season and into the New Year and beyond? Price Age Hits Norfolk Adventure Park

Local Quiz Night Raises Over £4,000 for Children in Need The Hearing Care Centre joined forces with BBC Radio Suffolk for The Big Suffolk Quiz held on Sunday 10th November 2019. Presented by BBC radio presenter Mark Murphy, the evening was attended by over 350 people across 62 teams. Tickets for the quiz sold out in less than a week, which further demonstrated the event’s popularity. Thanks to generous support from local businesses, ticket sales and a bumper raffle, £3,072.62 was raised on the night. This was then boosted with an extra £1,000 as a fund-match from the team at Barclays in Ipswich, taking the total to £4,017.61. The event was held in aid of Children in Need, ahead of their appeal show which took place on Friday 15th November 2019. The money will go towards the amazing projects that help to change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people all over the country, including many local schemes in Suffolk. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, said “The quizzes we hold every year are a real highlight for us and such a great evening. This was without question the best event so far and it is all thanks to the generous support of local businesses, our wonderful attendees and of course the teams at The Hearing Care Centre, BBC Radio Suffolk and Trinity Park. A huge thank you to all and bring on the next event!” BBC Radio Suffolk Breakfast Show presenter Mark Murphy said, “This event kicks off an exciting week of fundraising at BBC Radio Suffolk and what a fantastic start to the week. A brilliant evening enjoyed by all.”

ell as the year begins to fade we must rejoice in the knowledge that Gareth and the lads have seen off The Kings Head, The Red Lion and Toby Carvery to come out top of the group and qualify for Euro 2020. Will we be allowed in if Brexit happens, presumably so as Australia have by some geographical jiggery pokery ended up in Eurovision but still no sign of Kylie. Anyway, back to Gareth and the lads. It’s all very well knocking them in at one end but against a more sophisticated side like The Maids Head or France and Spain the defence might seem to be a bit lacking. I propose a back four or Arthur “My heads gone” Shelby, Jack Hawkins, Richard Todd and Bobby Moore! Although Arthur could sit in front of a back four in the style of Nobby “the thinking man’s midfielder” Stiles. England to be a seeded team what could possibly go wrong…… Panto Season has started early with Boris “the truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth “ Johnson treading the boards or bus and pitting himself against Jeremy “ it’s my John Lennon cap honest” Corbyn. Time will tell, but a great distraction is bubbling in the wings… firstly having got over the shock of MeAgain not wanting to spend Xmas with the in-laws (So that’s the Sandringham Church trip off for another year, almost 60 now) we are told that plucky ex spare to the heir Andrew has been to his mum to get a note to tell his employers (Is that us?) he needs some time off from whatever it is that he does. All the time off (apart from the chats with the FBI) will give him time to sharpen up his speech for his eldest daughter’s upcoming nuptials with the lovelyEdoardo “I’m not in it for the money” Mapelli Mozzi. No doubt the whole event will be broadcast with reverential commentaries and fashion tips along the lines of there goes the father of the bride with a paper (note not plastic) bag over his head…. and here comes MeAgain ready for her closeup……oh sorry that was Sunset Boulevard. Just back from Rhodes where Mrs Anchor and I spent a lovely week recently with a flight from Norwich International. I’m hoping that my £10 development contribution will hopefully end up with a better coffee machine or something. Talking of roads it is unsurprising that the car was coming the wrong way up the slip road at Postwick.Isn’t this where all lanes lead to confusion one way and as a gateway to the roundabout circus of the NDR the other! And we must end with what must be the story of the week. Pumpkin the cat being banned from Tesco in Thorpe Marriott. I have met Pumpkin on many occasions and have enjoyed many a stroll to the chiller cabinet for a meal deal. He’s a lovely little chap and very clean. Should we man the barricades for the little fella and stand up to the corporate giant with the slogan “Hands of our Pussy!” Sorry a bit of a Benny Hill moment there….. Happy Christmas one and all!!!

More and more people in the UK are choosing to live together rather than get married or enter inter a civil partnership. Although on a day-to-day basis, this won’t really have an impact on their relationship, legally, it makes a big difference. In the eyes of the law, cohabiting couples don’t have a lot of rights, especially when it comes to inheritance. In fact, unless they’ve written a will, unmarried couples won’t necessarily inherit anything at all from their other half in the case of their death. Instead, money and assets will pass to the deceased’s closest living relatives. If no relatives can be found, the estate passes to the treasury. How a will can protect your partner in the event of your death If you write a will, you can leave your money and property to whomever you want. If you live with a long-term partner, a will allows you to leave all, or part of, your estate to them after you die. This could include your savings, your property and any other assets you own. If you have children with your partner, but aren’t married, your children will inherit everything you own. If they’re under 18, your estate will be held in a trust for them until they come of age. Of course, that sense of trust can take time to build, but initial impressions count as well. It’s important to take into account what you think and how you feel about this person and not just assume that because they’re a therapist they’re right and therefore, if you don’t feel comfortable with them, you’re wrong.

Volunteer For Norwich Pride 2020

T

Both the therapist and the person seeking therapy have their subjective viewpoints. There needs to be some accord between the two, because the therapeutic relationship is based upon two people being able to relate to one another in an effective way.

here’s nothing like being an organiser of Norwich Pride to help you get through the winter blues. There’s months until the main event on Saturday 25th July but the volunteers who bring you one of the biggest, free festivals in the city’s calendar are already hard at work making plans for 2020.

As a therapist, I sometimes use my viewpoint to challenge the person I’m working with, especially if I think that their position is detrimental to their well-being. However, there are also times when I need to put my viewpoint to one side, without completely losing sight of it, as the way forward is with the other person’s point of view.

We had a wonderful Norwich Pride this year. So many people said it was the biggest and best yet. There was something about the atmosphere. Maybe it was because the weather forecast was thunder and rain, and we feared it would be a wash-out (and then it it didn’t rain until 5pm!) Maybe it was because we were celebrating 50 years of LGBT+ liberation and there was mass relief and happiness about what we had achieved; Maybe it was because Town Crier Mike's calls of “O gay O gay O gay” and “ho ho ho homophobia must go!” from the City Hall balcony are still ringing in our ears. Whatever it was, it was a beautiful day and the rainbows on the ground cancelled out all the grey clouds in the sky.

On the darkest of winter days, we can still remember all the beauty and colour and joy. Each year as Norwich Pride grows, we need more and more volunteers to help us make it happen. If you would like to volunteer to help organise Norwich Pride 2020 please email volunteer@norwichpride.org.uk. It could change your life.

Although we all share common experiences, each of us is unique. That’s why I see my role as using my expertise and relating skills to help whomever I’m working with discover their own answers and follow their own path of growth. The Meditation Man

Richard Penguin’s

Musical Triangle Vincent has been practicing meditation for over 25 years due to his avid interest in Eastern Philosophies. Based in the golden triangle area of Norwich and wanting to share his knowledge, he has become qualified to teach in an official capacity. ‘I am finding the need to focus on wellbeing and mindfulness particularly relevant in the current climate we live in and the benefits of Meditation are vast; with stress, anxiety, work life imbalance, high blood pressure and insomnia being more common than ever before, I truly believe meditation can help.’’ ‘Pressures of social media, reality TV and photoshopped images means low self-esteem in teenagers is at an all-time low and with this in mind I will be holding my first ever teenage only mindfulness meditation 6-week course in January, it will be a mobile phone free zone.’ Vincent is currently teaching in various venues around Norwich as well as offering one to ones and meditation in the workplace, it is always worth checking his website as new classes are always being added.

elebrating the 40th anniversary of his classic solo album ‘Spectral Mornings’ and revisiting the landmark ‘Selling England By the Pound’ album from 1973 of which he was a key component with Genesis, Steve Hackett’s concert in Cambridge with his band, as part of an extensive tour, was a musical, and visual triumph. Divided up into set 1 being solo material the night opened with the sweet harmony laden ‘Every Day’ and progressed through other album highlights in the atmospheric ‘Tiger moth’, hypnotic and dynamic ‘Clocks’, through to the hauntingly beautiful title track with superb moments of sustained and soaring guitar, as well as taking dramatic diversions into his most recent album ‘At the Edge of Light’ with the band bathed in equally evocative multi-coloured lighting. Set 2 saw the whole of ‘Selling England..’ not only revisited, but revamped, especially on the conclusion of the classic ‘I know what I like..’. Equally the intricate instrumental passages played faithfully by Steve, saxophonist Rob Thownsend, and keyboard man Roger King, most notably on the magnificent ‘Firth of Fifth’, sounded as fresh as ever. Nad Sylvan visually and vocally recreated the characters that inhabited Gabriel’s original lyrics with aplomb especially on the epics ‘Battle of Epping Forest’ complete with Essex accents, ‘Cinema Show’, and the nod to an England that once may have been, or maybe never was, on ‘Dancing with the moonlit Knight’ before encores of ‘Dance on a Volcano’ and ‘Los Endos’ from ‘Trick of the Tail’ sent a large and enthusiastic

audience home reminiscing in the case of its older members, and enthralled in its younger ones. A magnificent concert. On a day of foul weather in late September the journey out to Burnham Deepdale was made worthwhile by a superb set of storytelling songs from the marvellous Man the Lifeboats. Largely drawn from their new album ‘When The Time Bell Rings’ drinking tales such as ‘I have a thirst’ sat alongside the political ‘Battle of Cable Street’ and ‘When The Ship Goes Down’ receiving equal enthusiasm, applause and audience participation. There is an energy in this band to match the clever lyrical content rendering them able to reach both the grey matter and the feet. Look out for them. German Film Stars evening opening set at the Tilting Sky night upstairs at the Waterfront benefitted from a decent sound mix enabling the audience able not only to hear each instrument clearly but discern the words to their catchy indie pop based songs with references to May and Thatcher on ‘Submarine’, returning home to Norfolk on ‘Flatlands’ and poignantly the atmospheric ‘The Fog’ all from their superb new album ‘The Blooming of the Tisza’. On the same evening I popped in to the nearby Jurnets bar to catch The Progression Sect’s improvised set at the Psychedelic circus night that embraced elements of experimentation, Krautrock, Prog and jazz with hints of Crimson and Can. Utilising technology sustained guitars with hints of Fripp floated over propulsive bass and drum lines Czukay and Liebzeit would have been proud of.

Well worth investigating both bands.
