This year the Norwich Pride Parade will, in line with Prides all over the globe, be called a March, in recognition that the first Pride March was organised to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots which were on 28th June 1969. This year we are celebrating 50 years of LGBT+ liberation and the Pride March promises to be the most colourful, musical and political yet. We have booked more bands than ever before; we are going to sell more flags than ever before; and we’ve had more community groups and businesses book places than ever before. We will once again be bringing our stunning 50m rainbow flag which gets held aloft by hundreds of Pride-goers and it’s wonderful to see it weave its way through the city, like a giant rainbow river. Whilst we love huge gestures like this and adore all the group banners, it’s the personal details that also make a difference: the slogans people write on handmade signs and tshirts and paint on their faces - “everyone is equal”, “I love and support my gay daughter” “strength in community” and “free hugs”. If the words “political” and “March” scare you, be rest assured, it’s the same Pride Parade it’s always been and every person who’s ever joined us on it has helped to make the city a place where we can all feel safe and proud to be ourselves. The Norwich Pride March leaves City Hall at 1pm on Saturday 27th July.

Ghost: The Musical comes to Norwich !

Sound Ideas are a fresh and innovative theatre company based in Norwich who formed back in 2013 as part of the Norwich Fringe Festival. They now produce an exciting season of theatre each year in a variety of venues in and around Norwich.

Beginning as a small group of friends with a passion for innovative theatre, crowded around a piano in a friend’s garage - they

packed out their first concert, ‘The Obscure Revue’ which spring-boarded work from there on after and has allowed the group to flourish and grow into the fabulous team that they are today.

The team has produced a wealth of exciting and engaging productions over the last few years which have been nominated for and have received a variety of awards and accolades including the Dr Frank Bates award for Musical Theatre and Dance at the Norfolk Arts Awards, sponsored by the EDP. In 2016 they took the Norwich theatre scene by storm when they staged the regional premiere of oddball toilet-themed hit Broadway cult musical Urinetown, followed closely by the equally ambitious Christmas production of Stephen Sondheim’s dark spin on fairytales, Into The Woods. 2017 began with an immersive and site-specific production of the dark tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and since then they have produced productions of USHERS: The Front of House Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Singin’ in the Rain!

BECCLES ANTIQUES STREET MARKET SUNDAY 5TH MAY 2018 8am – 4.00pm Now in it’s tenth year, the Beccles Antiques Street Market held in the centre of Beccles will take place on Sunday May 5th (with the second of the year booked for 11th August). The market plays host to a hundred general and specialist dealers selling a wide range of good quality antiques and collectables including furniture, silver, china, linen, jewellery, books, clocks, retro and vintage design and decorative items.

The local shops, restaurants and bars are open that day and first class local ‘street food’ catering is incorporated into the market, including a hog roast. As well as the two Beccles Markets planned for this year, the organisers have also taken over the running of The Loddon Antiques & Collectors Fair at the Jubilee Hall in Loddon. With up to forty dealers trading in affordable antiques and collectables, aimed at both dealers and collectors the future dates for 2019 are April 28th, July 7th, September 29th and November 24th.

… that it’s very difficult to come up with an original, interesting band name

A

s I’ve mentioned before in this column, I play in a band and, as I haven’t mentioned before, we are currently moving slowly but surely towards releasing an album. For a number of reasons we have decided that for the release of the album we will change our name, not the least of the reasons is the fact that there is a functions band from the Midlands with a very snazzy website who have the same name as our current one.

In the pre-internet days it was much easier. There were probably a dozen Ludicrous Lollipops around the UK, even more around the World, all of whom were blissfully unaware that they weren’t the only one, unless one of the others got some national coverage in the Music Press or on the radio. Nowadays, you can find out about, and even listen to, all of them with a couple of clicks of a mouse. And if you do find that there’s, for example, a functions band from the Midlands with the same name, what do you do? Do you carry on and hope it’s not a problem – well, they’re a functions band and you play purely original material – get them to change their name, or change your own?

And that no-one else has come up with already!! It’s a minefield!!!

Do names really matter? Probably not, unless you want to let people know exactly what sort of music you play, like a punk band, a disco band, or a tribute band. There are many great bands with really rubbish names and vice versa. This will split the room, but The Beatles is a really terrible name. I can imagine John telling the others “I’ve got this really great name.” “Fab, John, what is it?” “It’s… wait for it…The Beetles!”, “Oh”, “Ah, but the genius bit is that the second ‘e’ is an ‘a’”, “Oh yeah, fab, that’s really great, John!” Of course, if it was happening now, it would be “Ah, but the genius bit is that instead of an ‘s’ it’s a ‘z’”.

They’re not alone, of course. There’s also The Who – yeah, terrific joke, guys, did you try Plus Support and Free Bar first? – and Blur, a name that actually sounds like someone being sick! Basically, if you’re successful then you have a great name.

If you’re not successful, you can change your name and try again, ad infinitum.

Anyway we’ve made a decision on a new name, and nobody else anywhere in the World seems to have it, so everything’s fine.

he church of St. Michael and All Angels, often spoken of locally as ‘St. Miles’ is a very fine building with a special feast of very intricate flint designs on its exterior, without doubt one of the best in the county featuring what is technically called ‘flushwork.’ The church dates from ca. 1284 and the flint embellishments were probably added ca. 1500 when Robert Thorpe had a special chantry chapel built for himself at the east end of the south aisle. The flushwork on the south side of the church is original and the repeated pattern at the east end is actually a late Victorian copy, and one has to say this work is also very fine indeed.

Chantry chapels got their name from the fact that someone in holy orders (possibly a monk) would have provided a daily mass for Robert’s soul at which service part of the liturgy would have been intoned, or, ‘chanted’ – hence ‘chantry’ comes from ‘chanting’. Robert Thorpe would have left a financial endowment to help pay for the expenses of the service, such as a fee for the celebrant, special candles and the like.

In ca. 1557 a very special boy was born in this parish and he would come to be one of the most famous musicians in British history. Thomas Morley was almost certainly baptised in this church but, by a strange twist of fate, his name is not recorded in the church registers simply because Queen Elizabeth I did not decree that births, 18

marriages and deaths had to be officially registered until 1558 – the year after Thomas’ birth. Morley went on to be a young chorister at Norwich Cathedral 1565-1568, then, after a time at St. Paul’s in London he came back to Norwich Cathedral as Master of the Choristers 1583-1587. In the 1590s he was appointed as Queen Elizabeth’s patented music publisher. He was a prolific composer and is rightly regarded as the finest of all the Madrigal song composers of the Tudor era.

I well remember my mother taking me to this church occasionally in the 1950s and I can recall the vicar’s name was Revd Hay, a rather sweet and charming man. I managed to get access to this church in 2018 as I had the wish to photograph the font in which Morley was baptised. Imagine my surprise – no sign of it anywhere in the building. It must have been removed when this church was declared as redundant. I’m assuming it is in another Norfolk church now.

I’ll keep looking. In recent years this building was the home of the Inspire Discovery Centre. When I made my visit last year it was being used by a circus acrobatic group. It was good to see that this large building was being used. Do see if you can find time to visit this handsome church, which is located on Oak Street, opposite Indigo Yard and just off Duke Street.

MURDER ON THE ALLOTMENT In the middle of January something happened that many people thought inevitable: my chickens were killed by a fox. One hen, still a little bit warm, was lying headless in the shed. The second was dead and cold under the best apple tree. There was some evidence of a kerfuffle near their favourite place, the compost heap, and it looked like they had been played with like a mouse in the clutches of a cat. It’s what foxes do.

ew Holt Festival artistic Director Anwen Hurt has announced the first highlights for the 2019 festival which runs from 21 – 27 July. Now in its eleventh year, it’s one of the East of England’s most anticipated events.

Auden Theatre and international best selling novelist Kate Mosse will be talking about her life and work with Kate Roma.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of punk princess Toyah’s music career and she’s bringing her full electric band to Holt to celebrate! The charismatic award-winning rock legend is a vibrant performer who has amassed thirteen top 40 singles, recorded twenty-four albums – and still found time to write books, appear in numerous stage plays, films and television programmes.

Stars from the eastern region are also a feature of the festival. Poet and theatremaker Luke Wright is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his first ever gig with an extensive national tour of his show Luke Wright, Poet Laureate. The show enjoyed a two-week sell-out run in Edinburgh, and was hailed by critics as his best ever. With a new Poet Laureate due to be announced in 2019 he’s chucking his hat in the ring. He’s on a mission to write poems to unite a nation divided by austerity and Brexit. Can it be done?

I will have chickens again. Quite apart from the fact that I always forget to buy eggs, their absence has made me feel somewhat detached from the allotment.

Since The Killing I’ve only been there once. So the question is how to protect a future flock. An electric fence has been recommended but on an allotment?

Somebody suggested a device which emits a high pitched noise that can only be heard by vermin, rabbits, foxes and deer. I remember the parish council once considered something like that to stop younger members of the community from sitting on the bench in the market square but the law forbids the torture of bored teenagers. Can I trust that the noise can’t be heard?

Anwen said ‘I think we’re giving just a taste of the range, depth and variety that will be on offer when we announce the full line up at the end of April. It’s been a pleasure to programme these wonderful artists and I’m delighted to say there are even more to come!’

I don’t know what I’m going to do yet.

Maybe I won’t increase fortifications at all and take a chance. In the meantime, a neighbour gave me lots of delicious, gutted, plucked and butchered game birds for the freezer. I didn’t eat my poor chickens.

earing loss generally develops slowly over many years and the effects become apparent only gradually. It can be quite easy for someone with hearing loss to not realise what sounds they are missing out on, or to find ways of adapting to compensate for what they are missing.

Often those with hearing loss believe that those around them are mumbling or not speaking clearly enough, rather than acknowledging that it is their hearing loss that is causing the issue.

However, ignoring hearing loss can lead to a variety of cognitive issues including dementia. Moreover, it reduces your overall quality of life as it is more difficult to interact with the world around you.

The volume of your television is a good visual of the start of a hearing loss: the more your hearing levels decrease, the more you need to increase the volume of the television. Also those around you may complain that the television is too noisy, while for you it is the perfect volume.

There are many other warning signs that all point to this common problem. If you or someone you know exhibits any of the following signs, it may be time to book a hearing test.

SOME SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR: • Finding it difficult to follow conversations, especially in a social group situation Hearing only fragments of conversations can cause you to feel isolated, and as such, you’re likely to sit back and not participate as actively in a conversation.

RECIPE Yakisoba Noodles (4) 200 g / 8 oz udon noodles – ready to use 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 5 - 6 spring onions – sliced 1 small / medium carrot peeled– thinly stripped 100 - 150g of any left over veggies of choice (thin sliced or small diced) DRESSING – 1 tablespoon dark soya sauce 1/2 tablespoon oyster sauce 1 tablespoon mirin or sherry 2 –3 tablespoons caster sugar 1 tablespoon honey (runny is best) 1 tablespoon sesame oil ½ tablespoon sake (op) pinch dried red chilli flakes (op) • Firstly mix all the ingredints for the dressing sauce together in a bowl – set aside.

• Heat the oil in a wok.

• Fry of the spring onion, carrot and any vegies of choice • Fry for a minute or two and then • Add the noodles and toss to heat through.

• Add the dressing ingredients.

• Heat and mix together for a minute.

Local groups can promote the event and encourage their members to set up stalls, raising money for their chosen ‘cause’ (such as the local PTA, charity, etc). Local businesses can sponsor printing of posters / flyers / vinyl banners, promote via social media or put posters in their windows/railings to encourage footfall on the day. OR why not promote an ‘NR2 Trail offer’ on the day (such as 10% off for shoppers, etc). We’ll add your business to the NR2 Yard Sale Trail map & let our followers know about your group or business.

Charity shops in the area can expect good quality donations when stalls wrap up. Why not offer a ‘donation station’ on the day that we can promote.

T

he 21st century has seen many bands from the 60s to 90s reforming, and in the case of some, including FOCUS who played at EPIC in January, writing, recording and releasing new albums. Still lead by distinctive yodelling keyboard playing flautist Thijs van Leer and dextrous dynamic drummer Pierre Van Der Linden and ably abetted by decade involved guitarist Menno Gootjes, and recent recruit bassist Udo Pannekeet their set while mostly focusing upon classic 70s material also encompassed more recent tunes as well. Early in the set recognisable as a 70s kids tv theme ‘House of the King’ highlights Van Leer’s classical background with his fluent flute playing interweaving with Gootjes guitar work staying faithful to original axeman Akkerman’s style and playing. This isn’t always the case however for while Akkerman erred more on the subtle, jazz and classical Menno leans more in a rock direction as emphasised by ‘Who’s Calling’ from their new album Focus 11, and ‘ All Hens on Deck’ from its predecessor Focus 10. Quite clearly though age wise this audience wanted to hear the classics and they weren’t disappointed as the haunting ‘Sylvia’ was shortly followed by the pacey ‘Haren Scarem’ and of course magnificent set concluder ‘Hocus Pocus’. Superb.

Meanwhile accomplished accordionist KAREN TWEED made a welcome return to CARBERRY’S café as part of a short tour regaling the audience with tales of Triangle growing up, turning professional, living

in numerous different locations, and her artistic endeavours in between delightful waltz time tunes, upbeat Swedish Polska’s, thought provoking tunes based around real life stories, traditional tunes and tango’s, and all concluded with a subtle shift into a mesmerising ‘Moon River’. A lovely way to spend a mid to late Sunday afternoon. The standard of the Friday nights at JURNETS BAR remains high with the first Friday session in March bringing a humorous and lyrically barbed set from Gareth Jerbs, robust set of songs from Kira, personal and lyrically thought provoking sets from both Simon Byford and Bark Prelude, a Vaudeville and at times Duke Special like set from Joey Herzfeld trio, and to conclude the night a captivating classical guitar set from local musical maestro Peter Turrell. The following week I was the guest host of a night that saw Marshlander lyrically going where many fear to tread, Shane meandering and delving into his vast repertoire of offbeat songs, Ben C Winn reciting poems and accompanied by a backing track on his phone delivering the classic ‘Bag in a Tree’ and in a nepotistic way putting my own band Penguins Go Pop on and I am pleased to say that our catchy songs with quirky stories went down well. The Friday nights are a treat, and you are bound to discover someone worth discovering every Friday, and it is all free. What’s not to like. PENGUINS GO POP wise having played 12 gigs and an hour long radio session since last May we are taking a short break from Norwich

gigs to work on new songs ultimately for the second album but will return soon.

We may possibly play my fringe event at the Cromer Social club as part of the 21st anniversary FOLK ON THE PIER which is over the weekend of Friday 10th to Sunday 12th May and includes among others on the pier John Tams and Barry Coope, Mabon and The songs of Sandy Denny on the Friday, Ashley Hutchings, Truckstop Honeymoon, Anthony John Clarke and Roving Crows on the Saturday, and Megson, Merry Hell, Will Pound and Eddy Jay, and Oysterband on the Sunday.
