Welcome

I

hope you’ve all been good boys and girls, got the Christmas presents from Santa you wanted and are looking forward to a romantic Valentines. If not, go to the pub with your mates, that’ll do the trick! Please, please, please, don’t forget your Valentines presents on the 14th. Just a card will do! This message mainly goes out to us chaps as we are known forgetters of all things important no matter how much trouble we get in to nor how often it happens. Booking a band rehearsal on a partners birthday is another no no – honestly, it’s just not worth it!! I’m really looking forward to the Winter Olympics with mad fools throwing themselves down mountain sides with planks of wood tied to their feet. I’ve

been skiing (pre children, when I had money) a few times and once you realise that although it feels like you’re breaking the speed barrier, you are in fact travelling at about 3 mile per hour, falling over is a doddle. I would like to thank all the contributors to this great magazine. You have kept us informed, interested and generally up to date with all the good things that are happening out there. In October, BBC Radio Norfolk hosted Inspiring Females in the Arts, a live radio debateinvolving six inspiring panellistsrepresenting journalism, education, music, theatre and more. BBC presenter Nick Conrad chaired a lively debate for over 300 young women aged 12 to 18, with topics including part-time roles for working mums, the gender pay gap and the qualities required of those wishing to pursue a career in the Arts sector.

This eventinvolved over 40 volunteer mentors who took part in a variety of networking sessions, hosted compelling Q&A sessions and delivered quality interactive workshops covering career pathways such as Asset Management, Medical Underwriting, Cyber Security, Product Design and Data Science. The Inspiring Females programme is continuing to grow with further events planned this year such as a STEM event at the John Innes centre in May and the annual three-day Summit in July, and is always welcoming individuals, local schools and organisations to get involved. FRESH, HIGH QUALITY FOOD AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE

We’re proud that everything our producers display actually comes from Norfolk or Suffolk. That’s right, all our produce being sold must have been grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, or processed in Norfolk or Suffolk. Either the producer, or someone directly involved with the production, must be selling the produce so you can ask how the food is produced and grown and at the same time customer feedback is appreciated by the farmer. Buying locally reduces food miles and the distance from field to fork. This puts money back into the local economy, sustaining and creating jobs. Farmers’ Markets in Norfolk are simply miles better! www.norwichfarmersmarket.co.uk 6

January: The gyms will be full and revenue from cigarettes, alcohol and sweets will be at an all-time low. No significant snow. February: The gyms will be empty and revenue from cigarettes, alcohol and sweets will be at an all-time high. No significant snow. March: Following on from Colman’s of Norwich going for a Burton (see what I did there?), other iconic Norwich brands disappear with Jarrolds becoming a Poundland megastore and Elm Hill being dug up and transported to America having been bought by an eccentric billionaire. Still no significant snow. April: Still no significant snow. Just rain, lots of it. May: A deep depression over Norwich as Norwich City just miss out on the Play-offs as Alex Neil’s Preston overtake them on the last day of the season. A caller to Canarycall actually explodes on the air. No snow. June: Finally, significant snow falls, but the county takes it in its stride, panicking just the required amount! YOUR LOCAL FARMERS’ MARKET

Put simply, we founded Farmers’ Markets in Norfolk to enable local farmers to sell their products direct to you so that they get a fair price for their work and that you get fresh, high quality food at an affordable price. Local growers and producers take personal pride in the food they bring to their Farmers’ Markets and want you to enjoy it. The emphasis is on freshness, quality and value for money. We encourage sustainable methods of food production. We support traditional animal breeds and heritage fruit and vegetable varieties.

If you don’t know what it is, it’s basically a calendar/diary type thing prefilled with things that will happen – tide times and sunrise/sunset times – and things that are predicted to happen. Well, I thought I’d have a go, it can’t be that difficult, can it?

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING MORE UNIQUE?

STUDIES FOR A PAINTING An exhibition of Life-Drawings by Craig Wylie The Fairhurst Gallery Exhibition dates: February 1 – 17, 2018 The Fairhurst Gallery is delighted to announce the first exhibition of lifedrawings by the award-winning artist Craig Wylie. Theses intimate sketches offer a rare glimpse into the studio practice of this master painter and the process involved in developing initial sketches into his highly acclaimed oil paintings. Born in Masvingo, Zimbabwe in 1973, Wylie studied Fine Art at Rhodes University in South Africa. He moved to London in 1998 and went on to gain great success and critical acclaim for his figurative work. Among such distinctions as winning the BP Portrait Award in 2008 and being commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery to paint Dame Kelly Holmes for their permanent collection, Wylie has consistently pursued the human form as his subject. The gallery will also host an exclusive Life-Drawing Workshop in the gallery with Craig Wylie on Thursday, Feb 15th, 6-8pm. Booking is essential. For more information visit www.fairhurstgallery.co.uk 10

We know that choosing the right engagement ring can be a daunting task – there are so many different styles and choices out there, and it can be even harder when you are looking for something more unique or unusual – but arm yourself with the right information and you will tackle the job like a pro! There are many questions we ask our customers when designing engagement rings, and the answers you give can help narrow down your options. Which metal? – Does your other half have a preferred colour e.g. yellow, white, or rose? There are multiple options for each colour to fit any budget, but knowing the general colour is a great start. Which stones? – Diamonds, sapphires, and rubies are classic and timeless, but there is a plethora of beautiful gemstones out there. Keep in mind your partner’s favourite colours, their personality, and their sense of style – are they minimalistic, quirky, glitzy? Finger size? – Tricky, but not impossible. If you can’t size the finger directly, try to sneak away one of their other rings. Any measurement is helpful, and if you are unsure always opt for a larger size that can be worn for the proposal and then sized down to fit. Partner’s lifestyle? –Certain styles aren’t suitable for all lifestyles. For example, healthcare workers are often not allowed stone-set rings for hygiene reasons, and clawset rings would not be the most practical choice for a hairdresser. Hopefully these tips will help you, and we wish you luck!

DISCOVER THE WONDER OF QIGONG AT INNER SPACE I was introduced to Qigong many years ago at a taster session and it was love at first move. I can remember feeling so calm but also feeling energised and open at the same time. I couldn’t stop smiling after the class and I felt brilliant. With regular practice I soon discovered that my aches and pains had disapeared and I gained a overall sense of wellbeing. So what is Qigong? It is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. The gentle, flowing, rhythmic movements are easy to learn and are suitable for people of all ages. Older people who practice Qigong regularly have reported that it increases their vitality and builds stamina helping them to maintain good health. I have found for myself that it reduces stress, improves sleep and increases flexibilty. Try a class at Inner Space and see how Qigong can improve your health. Wednesday 10.30-11.30 and Thursday 7.30-8.30pm. For more information call 07802 744894 or email kittadam@yahoo.co.uk

Could you be a piece of Time Piece?

N

orfolk’s Voice Project Choir are inviting anyone (over 16) who would like to sing to join their new project for the 2018 Norfolk & Norwich Festival. No previous experience of singing is needed.

same boat, just trying out something new with no stress or expectations – but I have to say most seem to love it and decide to commit to the full project there and then!’

The innovative, multi award winning choir will perform their newly created show Time Piece between noon and midnight as the closing performances of this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival. The performances will take place on the hour every hour in various parts of the cloisters and garth of Norwich Cathedral. Each will be about 10 minutes long and free to attend except for a special ticketed event in the Cathedral between 9 and 10pm that will feature the full choir, soloists and instrumentalists and with atmospheric lighting.

The Voice Project Choir have taken their unique vision of what a community choir can be to international jazz festivals in mainland Europe, appeared on prime time French TV and had one of their London concerts broadcast on BBC Radio 3. It is now one of the best known choirs in the East of England, having given many hundreds of singers the opportunity to take part in unique creative performance projects of high quality new vocal music as well as running workshops designed to build confidence and explore a wide variety of uplifting and inspiring music.

The choir regenerates for each new project and always welcomes new, first time members. Anyone who thinks they may be interested can attend a no obligation taster session on Tuesday 13 March after which weekly rehearsals start on 20 March.

In May they are also taking last year’s groundbreaking Norfolk & Norwich Festival show, The Arms of Sleep (which invites audiences to an overnight sleepover experience, for adults) to the Brighton International Festival.

‘A taster session is a perfect way to test if this may be for you’ commented the choir’s Triangle co-Director Sian Croose ‘everyone is in the

Spotting Financial Scams

T

here are many fraudsters out there trying to separate you from your money. Phil Beck looks at how to spot financial fraud. Fraudsters prey on the lack of understanding that many people have about their finances and are very convincing: it’s how they make their money and they will be good at it. However, there are some basic facts to remember that will help you spot a potential scam.

Firstly, banks and other financial institutions won’t ask for PINs or other personal information over the phone. In fact absolutely no-one has the right to ask for this information. This message is being pressed home through TV advertising, so hopefully most people will say no if asked, but beware of very official sounding callers – fraudsters pretending to be from the Tax Office, the Financial Conduct Authority or even the Police. The second point to get home is that pension money

has special tax treatment, but if you access your pension in an unsafe way, you could get hit with a serious tax bill. You need to be very wary of anyone who suggests that you move your entire pension pot overseas, for example, or of those who suggest you might convert your fund into a huge cash pot. At best, you’ll be faced with a big tax bill – and at worst your money may disappear never to be seen again. Then there’s the sticky subject of investments. Scams are widespread with people telling you that you can make a huge profit by putting your money into one scheme or another. Nigerian investment schemes feature heavily, but there are many more. There’s a simple rule of thumb here: if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Scammers often put pressure on their victims to make an instant decision, saying that the rate/investment/ opportunity will only be

ell here it is 2018! World Cup Year! England off like the Light Brigade into the Valley of Death to face the might of the Germans, French and possibly plucky little Iceland. That is assuming they bother to qualify out of the group this time. Mind you World Cup Year could quite as easily become World War Three Year if Donald “Stable Genius” Trump takes some time off twitter to play with his launch codes.

of the teams seem to bother these days, gone are the times when we could look forward to the likes of Ron Harris, Norman Hunter and Tommy Smith taking chunks out of the opposing centre forward in the first 5 minutes at Wembley. Meanwhile as Windsor braces itself there is talk of clearing the streets and no doubt the final search will be done by Prince “are you a terrorist” Philip. I suspect the whole exercise is just a way of softening us all up for Russia with either a pitiful footballing display or the tanks rolling in after Donald’s hand has slipped. Christmas TV flickered and went out once again this year, where was Jack Hawkins when you needed him, although The Dambusters and 633 Squadron seemed to be on about 5 times each but sadly yet again no “Ship that Died of Shame”. And what of Planet X which as we all know was due to bring about the end of life as we know it last September, October and then again in December…. Oh yes apparently it’s hiding behind the sun!! Will Norwich City be wearing Bass Brewery sponsorship next season…will there be any players left to wear it…..

CLAXTONBIRD RESIDENTIAL Since opening the doors in the Summer of 2016 ClaxtonBird Residential have quickly established themselves at the forefront of modern estate agency and are delighted to announce they have recently been independently recognised as the number one selling agent in the Golden Triangle for the whole of 2017. Based at 134 Unthank Road, proprietors Darren Claxton and Mark Bird decided to combine their wealth of industry experience with a very personal approach. Client care rests at the heart of their service and they pride themselves on their extensive local knowledge and honest advice. Altogether, the team can boast more than 50 years’ experience with senior negotiators James Clark, who has worked with Darren and Mark since the launch of Claxton Bird, and Kim Dewing who joined in October last year. So, what is the secret to them achieving such incredible results in such a short space of time? Perhaps it’s the enhanced photography and premium online listings that they offer every client as part of their standard service or perhaps it’s the open day marketing which maximises exposure and achieves the best price for the homes they sell. Ultimately, it will be a combination of all these things delivered by people who are passionate about selling property in this wonderful part of Norwich. If you are thinking about moving in 2018 then please call in to our office, phone 01603 733002 or email us at norwich@claxtonbird.co.uk to book your free market appraisal. 20

HELLO! IS IT ME YOU’RE LOOKING FOR? A Lionel Richie classic from the eighties and also a question we ask our new customers.

Local History Matters

Ever wondered how our ancestors planned their year ahead? Visit this church to see a seasonally topical treasure - and find out Destination: Burnham Deepdale. A149 by Brancaster Staithe. Post Code: PE31 8DD.

A

t first sight St Mary’s church is a bit of a mixture, with its pre-conquest circular tower up against a main building that looks worryingly like a Victorian rebuild – but quell those fears, only the nave windows are 19th century replacements. What we have is a building that contains a very ancient (possibly dating back to ca. 1090) and extremely rare treasure, of both national importance and inestimable value and almost certainly unique in Norfolk. The first time I saw it for myself I realized I was standing in close proximity to something exceedingly special. I am referring to the church font. Before you say that you’ve seen fonts before, I must stress that, unless you’ve already seen this one, you have never seen one to equal this stylistic creation. It’s a real gem of ancient craftsmanship. What we have here is a Norman ‘Seasonal Font’ where three of its extraordinarily carved side panels depict the labouring tasks historically associated with all the months of the year. To make the programme of carvings work cyclically one must start with those on the north-facing panel – (pictured above). Now, working our way round the bowl,

PLEASE QUOTE THIS MAGAZINE WHEN YOU CONTACT OUR ADVERTISERS

from right to left, we have firstly, January: a man seated and drinking from a horn. February: a seated figure keeping warm by a fire. March: a worker digging with a spade. April: pruning a tree. Moving now to the east-facing side we have May: a man marks a field boundary with a flag and seeks blessings on his crops. June: weeding – here made to look interesting! July: reaping. August: binding a sheaf of corn. Moving now to the south-facing panel we have September: hand threshing with a flail. October: grinding corn with quern stones. November: killing a pig. December: a group of people enjoying a meal at Christmas. On the fourth (west) side ‘Trees of Life’ are depicted. Having enjoyed this remarkable font and reflected on its great rarity, it is very sobering to know that it was nearly lost for all time. Whilst being moved from the north aisle in 1797 disaster struck and it broke into three pieces! It was then dumped into a rectory garden elsewhere in the county. In ca. 1840 the broken font was returned to its rightful site but sadly it was inexpertly re-assembled. Towards the end of the 19th century it was finally and competently put back together correctly. Thank goodness! It’s a bit of a 30-mile trek to this church but you may well find it memorable.

New builds, renovations and home improvements have involved the same group of tradespeople for decades. Builders, roofers, plumbers, electricians and decorators are just a few of the usual suspects but how many projects use the services of a Home Technology Professional? What is a Home Technology Professional (HTP or Home Tech Pro)? It’s probably easier for me to describe the kind of services a HTP can provide using scenarios our customers tell of everyday. • Installation of big screen televisions on the wall with all the ugly boxes and cables hidden. • Setup of systems which pipe music into every room in your home, controlled by your voice. • Deploy quick to setup products which provide Wi-Fi to every corner of your home. • Improve the security of your home with app viewable cameras and smart doorbells. • Deliver energy savings with LED lighting and intelligent thermostats. • Create experiences in the home that leave a smile on your face. community-driven words, film and music project about Lowestoft’s almost forgotten fishing village, devised by Poetry People, in partnership with the Lowestoft & East Suffolk Maritime Museum, has just been awarded a £55,000 National Lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Led by Lowestoft-born poet and writer Dean Parkin, ‘The Grit’ project will deliver workshops in eight primary schools, a Grit Celebration Day in Sparrows Nest Park, a local history teaching resource, a permanent Maritime Museum installation, and a new live touring show. Working across the generations, the project will involve 240 children and residents from care homes and sheltered housing. In 1900 Lowestoft was one of the country’s leading tourist resorts and a top fishing port with a population of 23,000. The town’s fishing village, known as ‘The Grit’ or the ‘Beach Village’ to locals, was the most easterly point in the country, right next to the North Sea. There was a spirit of independence amongst the often poor ‘Gritsters’ and they built a self-sufficient community, home to 2,500 people, 13 pubs, three schools, two churches, shops and cafés. The decline of the fishing industry, coupled with World War Two and the 1953 flood, resulted in its demise. By the early 1970s, few houses remained and Birds Eye and other new industries made use of the site in subsequent decades. A book celebrating the fishing village and the people who lived there was published in 1997. Also titled The Grit, it was co-written

by Jack Rose – fisherman, lifeboatman and local legend known as ‘Mr Lowestoft’ – and Dean Parkin. The book took them nearly three years to write and involved many interviews with Gritsters who’d grown up in the early 20th century. It became an immediate bestseller but has been out of print for many years. A new revised edition will be published next summer to coincide with The Grit community project and Dean is keen to include new stories and photos. If you’d like to contribute to ‘The Grit’, get in touch by email on info@poetrypeople.co.uk or write to Poetry People, The Cut, 9 New Cut, Halesworth, Suffolk IP19 8BY.

Almost every health and fitness class sees an increase in numbers in the new year period. People make new years resolutions to get fit, healthy and shed any excess weight. Pilates instructor Claire Gurney met a number of new members in January and has found Pilates classes often retain more of their new participants than other fad based workouts. Why? Claire Gurney explains:

Circus250 logo projection Norwich Castle 9.1.18 by DoubltTakeProjections

Circus250 is the year-long celebration that marks the 250 that have passed since the very first circus was staged on London’s south bank.

MORE THAN JUST AN EXERCISE CLASS

Norwich’s high profile events will include the Lord Mayor’s Celebration in July featuring a circus-themed parade with life-sized elephant puppets winding through the streets. Following this, there will be a Big Top circus festival in Chapelfield Gardens hosted by Norwich’s Lost in Translation Circus.

“The Lord Mayor’s Celebration is the perfect showcase to celebrate 250 years of circus. The city has deep roots with its circus history as the birthplace of famous 19th century black circus proprietor Pablo Fanque. Circus250 director, Dea Birkett, said: “We’re so pleased to have selected Norwich as one of the Six Cities of Circus. ‘The city has a long tradition of circus. PT Barnum paraded his elephants in Norwich and it’s currently home to the internationally renowned Lost in Translation Circus as well as The Oak Circus Centre.’

The celebrations were kick started in January when the Circus250 logo, designed by Sir Peter Blake, was spectacularly projected onto Norwich Castle.

Massimiliano Rossetti Co-Director of Lost in Translation Circus and The Oak Circus Centre in Norwich said ‘ We are all so pleased that Norwich has been chosen as one of the UK Cities of Circus for 2018. We are looking forward to staging brilliant events that will really put the city on the international circus map. From our Norwich base LiT have travelled the world to perform and now we’re bringing the circus world to the city.’

Alan Waters, leader of the council, said:

Pilates involves concentration on technique, breathing and posture. Its easy to forget any worries you may have had before you came to the class. In a Pilates session you can work at your own pace and learn the movements without pressure to keep up, allowing you to relax and improve your mental wellbeing. Pilates focuses on the areas of the body often need of strengthening, to prevent pain and injury. Pilates exercises primarily work the “core” muscles of the back, shoulders, hips and abdominals. Developing strength and flexibility in these areas can prevent back pain and other common muscle and joint problems, people often keep coming because Pilates helps them to feel healthier and more mobile. Classes can be fitted into a busy week. Pilates is less intense than some forms of exercise, most people don’t get sweaty, need to shower straight afterwards, or to bring lots of equipment with them. Its easy to attend after a morning of day of work before you enjoy your afternoon or evening. To join a class email Claire at info@clairegurneypilates.com or call 07776044304.

Early February marks the ancient Festival of Brigid: the moment half way between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Christians call this festival Candlemas, when candles are lit in the still long dark evenings to recognise that the light is growing – and to earth-centred people the festival is also known as ‘Imbolc’, meaning “ewe’s milk”, as the ewes begin to lactate in anticipation of the arrival of lambs. Brigid is often shown with her sacred bird the swan and totem animal the wolf, and she holds the light of the increasing sun in her hands: the light of Inspiration. As a goddess of song, poetry and blacksmithcraft, she inspires us to think about our creative selves, and to consider what crafts, skills, and imaginative capabilities we might want to work on through this year. Following on from Imbolc, will be the Chinese New Year, a New Moon festival which this year falls on 16th February. From this February to next, it will be the Year of the Dog: a year for those born 12 years ago, and therefore also for those aged 24,

36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96. A Dog person has traits such as loyalty, compatibility and offer kind words and useful advice, listening and lending a shoulder, often becoming deeply involved in ensuring others are happy rather than acquiring wealth, money or success. We have some lovely cards, jewellery and practical items for Dog-people! And in between these two festivals, falls St Valentine’s Day ~ a time to think of love for a partner, and of love for oneself, and how to nurture and nourish both. We have many beautiful treats: jewellery, candles, oils for massage, music, incenses for creating romantic and harmonious atmosphere as well as lovely gifts just to treat oneself to as a reward for surviving the winter! 2018 also marks the beginning of the 30th year of trading for Inanna’s, and so we thank you, our lovely and treasured customers. We look forward to seeing faces familiar and new! Have a peaceful and bright Imbolc!

Meadows and hedgerows, woodlands and waterways, all hold their own fascination for anyone interested in the natural world – and walking is the preeminent way to explore them all without getting wet or falling out of a tree. One of my favourite places to go to escape the bustle of the city (yes, I’m talking about Norwich!) is the RSPB’s nature reserve at Strumpshaw Fen, not least because here I can explore meadows, hedgerows, woodlands and waterways to my heart’s content. This is also where I was first introduced to Nordic Walking. It has, as its sounds, its origins in the northern European region of our Scandinavian neighbours. What sets it apart from its more passive cousin, the ramble, is the use of walking poles to get your arms, shoulders and back involved in the action of getting your stride on. Getting the heart pumping and the endorphins flowing, Nordic Walking adds a little something extra to getting out in nature – cardio! Excited by the possibility of offering people the health benefits of a good work out with spending time in nature, the RSPB has partnered with Norfolk Nordic Walking provider Charles Allen to offer introductory courses at Strumpshaw Fen. The next six week course starts on 5 March, with weekly sessions each Monday from 10.30 am – 12.00 pm (skipping Easter Monday). Visit www.rspb.org.uk/strumpshawfen, email strumpshaw@rspb.org.uk or phone 01603 715191 to find out how to book your place.

Caravan managed to pack out the Arts centre playing a set drawn largely from their landmark 70s albums to an audience who have mostly been with them since then. The night saw them play the whole of the classic ‘Land of Grey and Pink’ album bar the wonderful ‘winter wine’, but this was more than made up for by the inclusion of the lyrically amusing joyful pop prog of ‘Golf Girl’, surreal but accessible title track, and epic 20 minute ‘9 feet Underground’ with its jazz tinged and fuzzy organ led sections. While Pye Hastings is the only original member left multi-instrumentalist Geoffrey Richardson joined in 73 and keyboard man Jan Schelhaas in 75, and so albums that they played on are delved into including ‘Headloss’ and haunting ‘For Richard’. ..and thinking of which the inclusion of ‘Farewell my old friend’ about and dedicated to deceased original drummer Richard Coughlan proved to be a touching moment. Newer songs such as ‘All this and more’ shows that they can still pen a decent song with hook lines aplenty. A lovely night, and almost 50 years on from their inception still a great live band. A word also for young support band Guarenfoe who belied their youth trading riffs akin to Caravan’s 70s compatriots King Crimson, and Yes blended with hints of post rock. One’s to watch for. Also at the arts centre it was great to see local legend Shane O’Linski together with his band the Ornithologists recording a set of nature drenched songs and chatting amiably with Verity
