can’t believe i am sititng here writing my final welcome page for 2020.... what a year this has been!

Despite the national and local restrictions and lockdowns Anglia Print Ltd have still managed to carry on with our Charity and community support. Each year we help local organisations (from local theatres to local charity events to art groups) with free or discounted design / printing and discounted / free advertising in our positive magazines Triangle & Sunrise this year the total was £23,847.00!! wow!

I am hopeful that we may get some kind of normality for the festivities this year, i think we all need quality time with our loved ones to reflect and recharge. I saw a post the other day online which said:

set up Eco Design Living as a space to provide my interior design service. The way I designed the studio, and furnished it, reflects my design principles.

he Locks Inn at Geldeston is an iconic pub in an iconic location. It has been the social and community hub of the Waveney Valley for generations and is really important to residents of large parts of Norfolk and Suffolk. The Locks Inn is a place to meet old friends, to make new friends and a particularly special place for musicians and music lovers.

On 21 September Graham Elliott discovered the pub was up for sale and would go under the hammer at auction on 21 October. The sale details implied that alternative uses for the site could be possible. There was a real risk that, at auction, the pub could be snapped up by a developer with very different plans, and that generations of social heritage could be lost.

A campaign group was formed with the view to creating a community-owned pub that retained all the positive elements of the past and reached out to an even greater range of people in the future. The response to the appeal was overwhelming.

Tales from the allotment Not only did my allotment provide a fantastic harvest of food that I cultivated deliberately, it also showed me what can be gotten for free from nature, when I found the most enormous and appetising looking clump of fungi. So, ever since then I’ve spent several lovely days rummaging in the undergrowth of the Norfolk countryside, hunting for edible mushrooms. Since September, when this madness first started, I have eaten 9 different varieties, ranging from the parasol mushroom, to my favourites, the cauliflower mushroom and the bay boletus. We have whiled away evenings, identifying mushrooms with friends (in a socially distanced way, of course) and we’ve had fun with an id app which was confident that my friend’s toes were purple spored puffballs.

We seem to have become the fungi experts amongst a surprising number of our circle. We discourage their belief in us, however, because, if we’ve learnt anything, we know that you can’t take fungi identification lightly. The highest number of mushroom poisonings every year are caused by a fungus called the yellow stainer which looks the spitting image of a field mushroom, which is one a lot of people think they know, and which grows in a similar habitat.

Unfortunately, the mushroom on my allotment was honey fungus which killed a plum tree and three current bushes. Next year I’ll get my own back on it. It’s edible!

unday evening in the Anchor household, having been buoyed up by Cliff Robertson and the lads and the theme of 633 Squadron ringing in my ears I settled down to watch the next instalment in the retreat from Moscow that is the current theme for Gareth and his lads….but no as kick off approached beer in one hand crisps in the other it slowly dawned that if you wanted to watch England, Motor Racing, Cricket etc that would need a subscription to Sky Sports!!

Luckily the “highlights” were on later and were presumably watched by Harry Kane and Gareth “mines a penalty” Southgate as they both enthused about England’s performance! Playing out from the back and playing to feet is all well and good especially if the feet belong to a felloe England player rather than the Belgian midfield!! Come back Jack Hawkins and the late Nobby!

If Covid doesn’t get us then it seems Donald “keep your hair on” Trump may do instead as apparently he had to be restrained from his swansong move of bombing Iran!! A very belated last minute vote winner or just something to do on the day, hard to tell with the Twitter King! I wonder if he will turn up for Biden’s inauguration? And will the rest of the family??

and how fortunate they were to have a deserted cemetery apart from a fashion photographer with a loaded camera… “ready for my close up and can I be me in the next series of The Crown?” Well they are in for a load of Netflix cash.

Has Dominic seen the light or was it Barnard Castle…yes the visionary (I think he thought that) has gone to be replaced by Boris’s lady in waiting Carrie, whom I am sure will be leaving Boris to do a head count of his children from his isolation ward, and cracking on with running the country (unelected of course).

Will we manage with the vaccine? Will Boris and Little Nick manage the vaccine? will there be enough to go round? Will anyone be seen driving into the Covid test centre at the Postwick Park n Ride? Once again it could all be about buses…… oh and Brexit!!

Stone me another year gone and another lack of qualification for Gareths chaps in the Nations League but that seems quite easy to do with the convoluted rules perhaps Dominic could test his eyes and have a look at a review now he’s got a bit of time on his hands.

We are living in chaotic times. It’s not hard to see the difficulties we’re facing. But it’s worthwhile looking for the opportunities too. What in ourselves do we want to let go of? How would we like to be instead? If we can learn to tolerate and accept uncertainty, we can cope with the situation much better.

Sometimes we need to concentrate on the one step that we can take and let go of worrying about all of the things we’re unable to change yet.

Self-care is important in all of this, making time to do the things that nurture us – a walk in nature, a good book or film, music, meditation, time connecting with friends and family.

Grapes Hill Community Gardens

When the days are colder and darker, it is even more important than at any other time of year, to make the most of daylight hours.

Wrap up warm and take a walk in our fine city and over to the garden. There are still herbs growing and some of our feathered friends in the trees. Just being around plants can be great for wellbeing, so do come into the garden and see what you can spot.

The Melianthus major (Honeybush) with its huge foliage is just by the lawn and if you gently rub a leaf, you may be surprised at the scent!

There is also some Rosemary which you are welcome to take a few stems from for your winter cooking (please make sure you leave plenty for others in the community) and if there is anything else ready to pick you can find the list on the board in the garden.

othings gonna stop Christmas this year and to comfort our souls the best remedy is good food. Christmas cheese is a must especially with so many amazing Norfolk cheeses like dapple, Baron Bignold, soft goats cheese from Fielding Cottage and a hit of blue from Mrs Temples.

But all good cheese boards come with a chutney and a piccalilli smacks crimbo.

Autumn Piccalilli (5 – 6 jars)

First Overnight Mix 1 small cauliflower (approx. 500 g) – cut in to small florets 200g shallots – peeled and left whole if small 300g courgettes – cut in to chunky diced (approx. 2 cm pieces) 3 pears (approx. 450 g) – peeled, cored and diced 50g salt 2 pints / 1100ml water

Christmas Treats

• In a large bowl add all the overnight ingredients, cover with the water, stir in the salt, cover with cling film and leave somewhere cool (not the fridge) for the night.

• Rinse the vegetables well to remove all the salty water.

• In a large saucepan add all the rinsed vegetables along with all the pickle mix ingredients.

• Bring to the boil and then simmer for 10 minutes (the vegetables should still have a bite to them).

• Meanwhile whisk together the thickening mix with enough water to make a pouring consistency.

• Stir the thickening mix in to the hot piccalilli pot stirring all the time on a low heat until thickened.

• Simmer for a further 3 minutes to allow the corn flour and the mustard to cook out and the flavour to develop, stirring occasionally.

125g light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 medium egg 125g wholemeal flour 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 125g oats 125g raisins • Pre-heat the oven gas 5 / 180*c • Cream the butter and sugar together till soft and paler.

• Beat in the egg until well mixed and smooth.

• Mix in the rest of the ingredients.

• Drop a tablespoon of mix on to a greased baking sheet.

• Bake for 8-10 minutes on the middle shelf or until golden brown.

• Cookies will be crispy on the outside but still chewy in the middle.

• Spoon in to sterilized jars.

• Cool slightly- then eat.!!

Baking with the children is a great way to get the little ones in to food. They love it and are more likely to try the food they are involved in preparing. Cookies are a good starting point.

Fresh cookies are fabulous, you can make them up ahead wrap them in cling in a fat sausage shape, store them in the fridge and slice n cook at your pleasure. Meaning you always have fresh cookies at the ready warm and comforting from the oven.

… that not everyone’ s normal is the same

W

hen you read this, it is likely that we will know whether we can go out and meet people again, or whether Bojo the Clown has broken another promise. As I am writing it, we are half way through Lockdown 2 (apparently closing pubs an hour early didn’t fool the virus at all), the one that IS precedented and IS on chartered waters. It is, in fact, the week that Pfizer announced that their vaccine was 90% effective in preventing Covid and Russia immediately announced that theirs was 92% effective. We may have to hope Russia are sincere, as the Pfizer one is manufactured and distributed within the EU and we may not be able to afford it!

The vaccine is seen as a means of ‘returning to normal’, but what does that mean? I, and many others, have continued working, with one or two minor adjustments, as normal. It’s just that instead of in the office, my desk is in the spare bedroom. My lunch time walk is around the village rather than up and down St Stephens - I think you can guess which I prefer. Basically, the things I am doing that aren’t normal are almost entirely preferable to those

that were. I appreciate that this may not be the case for you – hence my opening statement - particularly if you live alone, and your experience is just as valid as mine, and I am not understating the seriousness of the virus, but the idea that everything was better before and we have to get back to where we were is just not true.

Of course, there are also some things that haven’t changed. Before Covid we had an incompetent, corrupt, self-serving government obsessed with a damaging Brexit, and that is still very much the case.

In the past few days, the Kent Lorry Park, which we were told we wouldn’t need, has flooded as it has been built on a flood plain. Dominic Cummings has made a very public exit from No 10 (expect to see him reappear alongside Slithy Gove, or perhaps he’s retraining as an optometrist!), not for breaking lockdown rules, or council tax evasion, or countless other transgressions, but for calling the future Mrs Clown ‘Princess Nut Nuts’ (what does that even mean?), showing where the PM’s priorities lie.

City council's continued support for rough sleepers

S

ince lockdown was announced in March, Norwich City Council has housed over 120 people in emergency accommodation, following government instructions to all local authorities.

A vast majority of those people housed in emergency accommodation have now been settled into more permanent housing, as is the aim with all our work with rough sleepers.

During this period of national restrictions, we are continuing to work alongside Pathways to support those who have returned to the street, or find themselves newly homeless, offering support and accommodation.

Since the start of the pandemic, we have arranged food provision for rough sleepers in emergency accommodation through working closely with local groups, which will continue as needed. This coordinated approach means we can be sure people can access food, safely.

Face coverings and hand sanitisers will continue to be provided, alongside other supplies and support for physical, substance misuse and mental health issues, and help to get people back into work or back in touch with their families.

Additionally, as in previous years, the council and its partners have put in place extra measures under the Severe Weather Emergency Provision (SWEP), including winter shelter provision.

The council has recently secured over £1.4m worth of funding from the government’s

Next Steps Accommodation programme, as well as £25,000 from its Cold Weather Fund.

With this funding we will continue to provide emergency accommodation and support where needed. It will also allow us to focus on our long term aim of preventing people returning to the streets through increasing the amount of permanent housing for former rough sleepers in partnership with Broadland Housing Association, and funding specialist support workers.

Councillor Kevin Maguire, Norwich City Council cabinet member with responsibility for rough sleeping, said: “While the initial focus was on supporting people into accommodation in the short term, Covid-19 has helped to speed up our ambitions to bring an end to rough sleeping in Norwich and this welcome influx of money helps us continue to develop plans to get the support, services and move-on accommodation in place so that no one is forced to return to the street.

“However, as winter approaches and with the pandemic still with us, the risk of people being pushed into homelessness increases, which we’re already experiencing, so it’s vital that the government continues to provide the necessary funding to allow local councils to provide safe and secure accommodation, as well as support to rebuild lives.”

ell, how do you sum up 2020. While many of us often want to stop the world and get off no one could have imagined a year ago that we would in these circumstances. In late January we penguins announced a 6 month break from live gigs but had no idea that it might run into 18 months. So, how did you survive lockdown number1? I spend much of my time working from home running artists download and cd campaigns and tour promotion so it may have been slightly less of a shock. I chose to repeat my Eclectic Selection shows from March onwards, but hope to return in January. My own survival kit seemed to be a stack of old cassettes and re-runs on Freeview of old episodes of M*A*S*H. By lockdown 2 apart from Alan Alda and his cohorts I had virtually given up on tv found myself immersed in specialist radio shows on community radio stations and delving back into old vinyl re-discovering lost gems.

I started reading 2 or 3 books that I haven’t finished, and started to re-write an old book that I had begun writing and put on hold. I haven’t got past Chapter 2 of that either.

Song ideas have been intermittent, some worthy of pursuing, others, well, maybe not.

Concerts went online which was strange but a safer way to play live as most couldn’t be held in public. Some still chose however to take the risk of venturing out to play or watch a live gig but I chose not to. While I realise that this year was always going to be difficult for any Government my own personal feeling is that they have not handled it well and their handing out of contracts to companies run by their best buddies patently unsuited to

be tracking and tracing, or manufacturing medical outfits is extremely questionable.

At least Cummings and Trump have gone, hooray! Or have they? Only time will tell.

My top 10 / 12 national album releases of 2020- (1)- Michael Kiwanuka- KiwanukaSoulful, personal, reflective, thoughtful, thought provoking, and intimate. The third of 3 near perfect albums. Wonderful. (2) Dyble Longdon- Between a Breath and a Breath-from pastoral pop, to full on prog the combination of early Fairport singer Judy Dyble and Big Big Train frontman David Longdon came to fruition following a concert by the band in 2015. Dyble wrote the words, Longdon the music resulting in a stunningly beautiful album immersed in atmosphere and enhanced by an array of fine musicians. A fitting musical swansong as sadly Judy died from cancer weeks before the albums release. Their voices blend superbly on an optimistic gem of an album despite Judy knowing of her fate. One well worth seeking out and savouring. (3)Paul Armfield- Domestic- Reflective and centred around the theme of home it is perhaps the most relevant album of the year. A lyrical, subtle and sumptuous album that seeps into your soul. (4) = Merry Hell- Emergency Lullabies, Virginia Kettle- No place like tomorrow- M H once again prod our

collective consciousness with their upbeat raucous folk-pop environmental and political songs, while their singer Virginia goes solo and only slightly more subtle. 2 great albums. (5) The Magpies- Tidings- All female folk band The Magpies produced a very assured deftly played debut packed full of strong songs and sweet harmonies well worth discovering. (6) Moore and Moss- Spectres- An atmospheric almost filmic album that furthers folk and breathes life into an old tradition. One for fans of The Rachels + Karen Tweed and Ian Carr, (7) = Threepenny Bit- King Ahtu, Monkey See Monkey Do- The Night Out- 2 joyous and upbeat albums linked by a band member. 3pb mix self penned and traditional tunes on a joyful folk based album that strays occasionally into mediaeval and prog moments, while MSMD is a joyous collection of trad songs and tunes deriving from an uproarious live set. Glorious. (8)- Dan O’Farrell and the Difference Engine- Richard Scarry Lied to me- Political pop, thought provoking, subtle and catchy part upbeat, part downbeat songs with clever lyrics. (9) Ben Avison- Lovers Leap- A subtle beautifully produced pop folk album covering a range of topics from love songs, childhood memories to an open letter to Morrissey. (10) Fairport Convention – Shuffle and Go- still going after 50+ years mixing songs written for them with superb Chris Leslie songs and Ric Sanders tunes highlighting that they are still relevant.
