A long time ambition of ours is to be completely self-sufficient with our own renewable energy. We nearly made it 2 years ago and had the contract to sign, but in the same week the first lockdown for Covid was announced. We are delighted to say that our solar array is now fitted and we are 100% self-sufficient for electricity...yay! And what better day to have them fitted than World Earth Day! Anglia Print have also signed up for the 30 Days Wild challenge. 30 Days Wild is The Wildlife Trusts’ annual challenge where they ask everyone to do one wild thing a day throughout the month of June. The Voice Project return to live performance Their Arc of the Sky project was all set to launch in 2020 when Covid caused the choirs to fall silent. With all live rehearsals and performances indefinitely postponed, Voice Project co-directors Jonathan Baker and Sian Croose moved everything online and created an acclaimed film instead. The 100-voice choir are now revisiting the project to create new live choral-performances, which will include songs, sounds and images from the film. Arc of the Sky is a site responsive piece inspired by the idea of a bird’s-eye view of the spectacular Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh (widely known as the Cathedral of the Marshes), the surrounding landscape, the Blyth estuary and the coastline. It explores themes of flight, perspective, scale, solitude and connection and features music written by Jon Baker, Orlando Gough and Sian Croose, with texts by poets including Emily Dickinson, Henry David Thoreau, Wendell Berry, Jane Draycott and George Szirtes. Sian Croose said, ‘It’s so good to be able to return to live performance. It seems so long since we were last able to do so. Live shows are the lifeblood of music.’ The Voice Project are renowned for their innovative approach to choral performance,

with specially composed music, poetry and choreography coming together to give audiences a unique, uplifting experience. Arc of the Sky includes elements of promenade performance where audience members are invited to walk with the choir. ‘We don’t want to exclude anyone’ explained Jonathan Baker ‘So if anyone has any access/mobility issues they can let us know at the time of booking. We also want to reassure anyone with reservations about attending mass events that we shall be practicing social distancing and that indoor spaces will be well ventilated’. The Voice Project Choir is a true open access community choir in the most literal sense, absolutely anyone can join whether they have any experience of singing and music or not. Despite this their performances are produced to exacting professional standards. They perform music that is specially written for them by internationally-renowned composers and present it in innovative ways to create spectacular events that live long in the memory. 9 THINGS! Small ways to make a BIG difference. With the world turning upside down and our lives impacted by the terrifying prospect of a third world war, its easy to feel powerless. Whether you can be inspired by the beautiful conceptual artist, Yoko Ono, and IMAGINE PEACE, or whether you can refocus your gaze on our dear planet’s climate emergency, we can recover some sense of impact through small acts of kindness and consideration. Here are some ideas. 1. Leave a section of your garden for wildflowers to develop 2. Stop mowing your lawn to encourage grasses that help our birds and insects 3. Stop using chemicals and peat in your garden and adopt organic practices 4. Plant a mixed hedgerow using native trees 5. Buy locally grown veg/meat /dairy/fruit. 6. Write to your local council and MP asking for better transport and to increase our footpaths 7. Look into how you can become plastic free. 8. Have some meat and dairy free days 9. Talk to friends and family about how they are making a difference, so everyone can feel part of this pledge to commit to a better climate. Consider becoming involved in civic society (eg: parish council/local church/local charities). Adopting one of these small actions will help. Love and Peace to you and your dear ones. Kate Hayes

Loddon WEA The very interesting course on ‘The Company of Preachers’ finished at the end of March with a presentation to our speaker, Mary Fewster. We were all very pleased to be able to join together for this course after an extended break due to Covid. A new committee has been formed and a presentation was given to Margaret and Colin Shearmur in recognition and thanks for their many years of service to the WEA group in Loddon. We are hoping to engage a speaker for a course beginning in September and details will be published nearer the date. The speaker for Spring is Nigel Herwin who will give a 10 course on Early East Anglia starting in January. For further details, please contact Alison on 01508 521976.

I’m sure persona non grata Uncle Andy would be available for baby-sitting duties. Will Edward trot out another dodgy version of It’s a Knockout with Camilla and Charles doing the mini marathon? Where is Eddie Waring when you need him? It all remains to be seen. Spirits will obviously need lifting locally after the Canaries relegation and all eyes looking to the transfer window and of course The Himalayas as Sherpa Webber (a few ups and downs on Gas Hill should knock him into shape). goes in search of a midfield general around Kathmandu or Everest Base Camp, Hilary and Tensing? Mallory and Irvine? or perhaps just bring back Wes Hoolahan from the spires of Cambridge. So the season ends at Carrow Road with a goal from Harry (where’s the net) Kane to bring his tally to 17 for the season not bad when compared with Jimmy (mine’s a pint St) Greaves 40 in 41 games for Chelsea in the 60/61 season. With nuclear Armageddon seemingly returning to middle burner for the time being, what of our old friend Covid? The dear old virus we have come to love has been upstaged recently by the arrival of Monkeypox with a recommended isolation period of 21 days mind you the big blisters and lumps are a bit of a giveaway if you spot them in Tesco! So look out for that and no doubt an autumn revival of omnicron just in time for xmas and the January sales. By which time we will know the fate of Harry and the lads and the inevitable penalty shootout. W

hen I started planting my frst seedlings this year, I came across a corner on my allotment where there seemed to have been a lot of tunnelling activity. I suspected rats, mice and moles, which I hate, and couldn’t help wondering whether the no dig approach to gardening might have made life a bit too cosy for them. I almost certainly expected the seedlings I planted there to turn into sickly specimen. I then came across an astonishing article by George Monbiot (The Guardian 7/5/22), the environmental campaigner, investigative journalist and natural historian, who gave me the answer to my question. The soil beneath our feet is not lifeless dirt but a living organism that is “as diverse as a rainforest or a coral reef.” Essential bacteria necessary for plant health, are present in huge numbers in the area around the roots of plants. They are stored in structures, invisible to the naked eye, that could be compared to a wasps nest or a beaver’s dam, and have uncanny similarities with the human gut in terms of numbers and functions. The earthy scent of a handful of soil that gardeners are familiar with, is in fact the smell of the compounds that the bacteria produce.

Mare involved in road accident gives birth to foal in Redwings’ care

A

pregnant mare who was involved in a road traffic accident in Essex has given birth in Redwings’ care.

Bay mare Majesty – named in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee year – came into the charity in February after suffering a broken nose and chest injuries in the crash. Happily, she has successfully given birth to a not-so-little boy who has been named Monarch.

Nicola Berryman, Welfare Veterinary Surgeon, who is caring for the pair at one of Redwings’ Norfolk sites, said: “Monarch was born in the early hours of the morning on 7th April. We don’t know who the father is but it’s clear he was a big horse, perhaps even a Shire, as Monarch is huge! “It was a tricky couple of days when baby Monarch came into the world – there were some initial problems with him feeding but foal and mum are in good health and are now doing well.” Majesty was hit by a vehicle at Tilbury Docks on 10th November and was found stuck in some railings on the central reservation when the emergency services arrived.

She was transported to a private boarding establishment who did a great job looking after her during her recovery. Jo Franklin, Senior Field Officer, said: “The awful injuries Majesty sustained mean that, understandably, she’s quite head shy when having a headcollar put on and will need ongoing support from our specialist behaviour team. “We’re so glad we were able to offer her a home in Sanctuary here at Redwings, and of course her new foal Monarch.” As a charity 100% funded by donations, it is thanks to the generosity of our supporters that Redwings is able to take in and care for horses like Majesty and Monarch. Not for Profit Law raises £20,000 for Norfolk charities

N

orwich has recently been granted Social Enterprise Status in recognition of its reputation as a hot-spot for Community Interest Companies. One such company is Not for Profit Law, an innovative law project that uses its profits to benefit local charities with help from the Norfolk Community Foundation. Just 9 months after Laura van Ree and Trina Worden – two experienced local solicitors – opened the doors of their firm, they have already given away £20,000 in profits. Not for Profit Law donated the sum, along with over £2,000 donations from clients who received free advice, to their partner charity Norfolk Community Foundation. The social enterprise harnesses the talents of the pair, who left well-known law firms to form a different kind of legal practice with a philanthropic approach. Their rates are lower than traditional law firms and they feed the profits they make back into the local community through the Foundation. This money has been put to good use straight away, assisting charities such as the Norfolk Deaf Association, DIAL Great Yarmouth and St Edmunds Society, all of whom help vulnerable people in Norfolk.

Claire Cullens, CEO of Norfolk Community Foundation, commented: “Our work is only possible because people and organisations like Not for Profit Law care about local communities and want to take action. We are enormously grateful and excited to receive this donation. It will be put to immediate use supporting charities working on the frontline in Norfolk communities”. Laura commented: “We are thrilled to have made such a brilliant start. We are confident that as more and more people learn about what we are doing, and hopefully choose to come to us for advice and assistance, the funds we can direct to Norfolk Community Foundation will be even greater”. Through Not for Profit Law, Laura and Trina advise on Wills, Tax, Probate and Estate Administration, Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection matters. They offer free initial probate advice to anyone who is responsible for dealing with the estate of a loved one and provide a free Will review service. Trina commented: “We want to ensure that people who need to do so can access free advice and guidance at Not For Profit Law. We are fortunate to be able to do the job we love and also help the local community at the same time.”

The Wildlife Trusts’ 30 Days Wild kicks off on 1st June The UK’s biggest nature challenge, 30 Days Wild, is on course for a record-breaking year following an unprecedented number of people signingup to take part so far. Last year, more than 760,000 took part in the challenge, which encourages people to do something wild every day throughout June. 30 Days Wild is supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Popular activities include wildlifewatching, breakfasting outdoors each day, and listening to birdsong. 30 Days Wild fans interpret the challenge in different ways – from planting for pollinators to taking on sporting challenges to raise money for The Wildlife Trusts. Treasured moments from the challenge include: • The participant who posted packets of wildflower seeds to their neighbours • The person who woke up 5am every day to catch the sunrise and dawn chorus • The enthusiast who crocheted a blanket with 30 wildlife species – one square a day*

Monty Shafts did y that it’s yo-yo time

es, Norwich City have, unsurprisingly, been relegated back to the Championship again and, inevitably, the post mortem has begun. Again. Some fans are philosophical and accept that this is unavoidable with our business model, but others are angry, presumably for the same reason! There is even talk of demonstrations (at the upcoming West Ham game), but what will the banners say? “Delia, why can’t you be richer?”, “Webber, why is it that the players you signed, that we were all quite excited about at the time, turned out not to be as successful as we thought they would be?” – a bit difficult to chant that one! Inexplicably, though, fans of other Clubs are angry, too. Angry that we don’t spend any money (although we did this season) and that we are, apparently a waste of a place in the Premier League. This anger does seem uniquely aimed at us, although we are far from being the only so-called yo-yo club – Watford will be joining us next season and Fulham and Bournemouth will be replacing us (with Leeds still in the mix for relegation and Sheffield United in the play-offs) – but I did see a Crystal Palace (yep, Crystal Palace) fan suggesting that the 4 of us should be kicked out into a break away league

you know... e again... and just play each other – a Not-So-Super League, so to speak – as we devalued the Premier League. But I say to that Crystal Palace fan, and the Southampton fans, and the fans of whoever stays up out of Burnley, Everton and Leeds, if 1 or 2 of us yo-yo clubs weren’t occupying the relegation places, who do you think would be? I do agree that the Premier League is broken and has been devalued, but not by the yo-yo clubs, rather by the multi-billionaire plaything clubs. Man City have this season reached the final of the League Cup, the semi-finals of the Champions League and the FA Cup and are still on course to win the Premier League, which would be their 4th win in 5 years. This is, apparently, a terrible year for the fans and there are calls for Guardiola to be sacked! How is that not devaluing the League? In fact, in the 30year history of the Premier League, only 6 clubs have won the title (including the Leicester and Jack Walker bank-rolled Blackburn anomalies, and let’s not forget that Norwich could, and probably should, have won it in the inaugural year)! Not exactly the most competitive league in the World, is it?

word?). The top European leagues are much the same. Bayern Munich have just won the Bundesliga for the 10th year in a row, Barcelona and Real Madrid have won all bar 2 of the last 18 La Liga titles, Paris Saint-Germain have won all bar 2 (when they finished 2nd) of the last 10 Ligue 1 titles, and Juventus have won 9 of the last 10 Serie A titles. These are all very rich clubs and, like here, the playing fields are so far from being level that the players need crampons not football boots. Perhaps, on reflection, the Super League wouldn’t have been such a bad thing, the departure of the mega-rich clubs (and their arrogant, entitled fans) may have seen a levelling up of those left behind, and we may have had a chance of survival. Although Mr Angry of Crystal Palace would probably have 3 or 4 new yo-yo clubs to moan about. Anyway, back to the Championship we go to rebuild and, hopefully, yo-yo again.

O TBC. OTBC.

Or perhaps it is. The Premier League is not alone in its uncompetitiveness (is that a COPY DATE DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE: 8TH JULY

fter 2 years and 2 months away from going to gigs the return after 2 years away due to the pandemic of Folk on the Pier in Cromer proved to be the re-start point for me. Having been to every one from 2008 to 2019 and run an event on the fringe for the last 7 of them it was great to be back, if only for one concert on the Saturday afternoon, but what a great line up it was. The Shackleton Trio were showcasing their new album ‘Mousehold’ released that day ahead of their 23 date UK tour and 9 date tour of Denmark and Norway. Having worked with and put them on at fringe events at the festival it was a proud moment seeing them taking to the main stage. I have to confess to running the P R for their new album and had that week helped to get them played on the BBC radio 2 folk show and video and song of the day for the on the Folk radio UK site for their single ‘The Eel Song’. Other radio shows and sites across the UK soon followed. Over the years Norfolk has produced several great acts who have made an impact on the national folk circuit and The Shackleton’s are keeping that tradition going. So why them? Well firstly there’s a wealth of great storytelling songs. On the day they focused largely upon the one’s from the new album. There is a strong Norwich link to half of the songs and tunes on the new album with ‘No Road Across Mousehold’ being based upon the 1800s

broadside ballad ‘Crackshots of Norwich’ light-heartedly warning of the dangers of crossing the heath while the then wayward Territorial army practiced their shooting. However other songs elicited compassion from the audience as Georgia told the story of labourers on the heath dancing and enjoying their work too much being curtailed from doing so by being made to wear ‘Little Wooden Shoes’ or more to the point heavy wooden clogs. Similarly ‘Wild Man Peter’ tells the sad story of a feral child brought to the UK, ending up in Norwich, and incarcerated in the city’s Bridewell Prison. Songs that make you think. ..And then there is Georgia’s crystal clear resonating, occasionally soaring, but never booming voice, and the subtle harmonies of both Nic and Aaren. Finally there is the mastery of their instruments. All 3 are very talented musicians and on Nic’s instrumental tunes on the album notably ‘Mandy Lynn’ dedicated to a chicken, and ‘Byards Leap’ inspired by a Lincolnshire fable the interplay between his deft mandolin lines and Georgia’s dextrous fiddle playing are underpinned by Aaren’s strong and solid yet intricate guitar work making them a cohesive, clever and tight trio. A great set and a superb new album. The middle act on the day was veteran guitarist and singer Wizz Jones. Emerging during the 60s boom of singer songwriters and fine guitarists there were moments to remind us when he fingerpicked the

guitar that he was a contemporary of the likes of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. Choosing to largely play covers of old time blues songs such as ‘Weeping Willow ‘ and slightly more contemporary songwriters like Jez Lowe, original ‘Lucky the man’, written for his daughter, proved that he too can write a decent song. Great to be able to see him even in his dotage. The main act were Dylancentric led by original Fairport bass man Ashley Hutchings playing the songs of, and with the approval of his Bobness. Accompanied by a fine selection of folk luminaries they certainly did justice to many of Dylan’s finest moments with Ashley’s son Blair Dunlop putting his heart and soul into ‘Sooner or Later’ and singing violinist Ruth Angel offering a sweeter female vocal lead to ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ than Bob’s original among many great offerings from his back catalogue.
