Set in a woodland glade in the depths of Norfolk, The Real Halloween is a true celebration of Autumnal magic, you can spend the afternoon making a Magic Wand, a pinecone Owl or Bat or even a real Broomstick before making your way round the woods with your lantern for the animal lantern parade. (See pages 12/13 & 15 for more details) And finally to get you into the Christmas spirit.......We have the Festive Fair at the forum where you can pick up unique hand made gifts for your loved ones from Thursday 25th November - Sunday 28th November. The Voice Project Film Premiere

The Voice Project Choir are hosting the premiere of their new film, The Distance Between Us at Norwich Arts Centre on 27 October with screenings at 6pm, 7.15pm and 8.30pm. Each screening will also include live music with Voice Project soloists Jon Baker, Lisa Cassidy, Jeremy Avis and more. The Distance Between Us was conceived during the lockdowns of autumn and winter 2020 and 2021 as a collective choral diary choir members experiences during those extraordinary months.

It was recorded and filmed entirely online. In all over 130 people joined the Norwich based choir from all over the world, including participants from Brighton, Ireland, Spain, South Africa and the USA. All took part in weekly Zoom singing rehearsals and some also took part in movement and creative writing sessions.

They then recorded themselves and made short films, mostly on normal smartphones. From that wealth of material film-maker Nathan Clarke, in collaboration with Art Director and Editor Sal Pittman and Movement Consultant Dane Hurst has assembled a film that runs to approximately 35 minutes. Also featured are soloists and musicians Sianed Jones, Lisa Cassidy, Jeremy Avis, Rowland Sutherland, Adrian Lever, Caroline Bishop, Ivan Mcreedy and Dane Hurst.‘We’re really proud of the film and that we managed to create something that reflects people’s experiences when we couldn’t physically get together to sing’ said Voice Project co-Director Sian Croose. ‘It records a very unusual and unique time in our lives; one that connected people across sometime great distances and allowed us to sing together whilst apart.’ The Voice Project Choir was founded by Sian Croose and Jonathan Baker in 2008. It’s a true open access community choir in the most literal sense, absolutely anyone can join whether they have any experience of singing and music or not yet their performances are produced to exacting professional standards. EA Live will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a starstudded programme of events, running at University of East Anglia from October 6 to November 17.

Organisers are thrilled to be returning to in-person events, with safety measures in place.

Of bees and caterpillars For the first time in my life I saw a bee swarm this summer that was spectacular and frightening at the same time. I was taking a peek from behind the buddleja by the time the swarm had hummed and spun it’s way across my neighbour’s plot and briefly looked like it would settle in one of my apple trees.

Luckily for me it changed its mind and continued on its swirling path across the road, disappearing between two houses. There seemed to be a lot of bees this season and the gardening year was shaping up to be very promising.

And then the muntjac moved in! But even worse than that, the cabbage white butterflies arrived and laid thousands of eggs.

Possibly as a result of an almost complete absence of wasps to gobble them all up, the eggs matured into many caterpillars. I am picking them off the brassicas’ already lacey leaves every day, and still there are more who come to munch and munch and munch. It has been a terrible year for them. I know of one organic gardener who resorted to spraying her plants and another who gave up and pulled them all out. I’m perservering, even though the muntjac added further destruction by eating half of my best red cabbage when the protection flew off one night. Astonishingly, despite the carnage inflicted on them, my cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and sprouts seem to continue growing and I am confident that there will be plenty of pickings for me.

The festival is a celebration of all things science and offers visitors the chance to explore the wonders of the universe, meet the scientists whose research has changed our world and debate some big questions with some big-thinkers. his year the Festive Fair at The Forum in Norwich will be back with a bang, taking place from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th November inclusive and packed full of Christmas cheer.

Enjoy a glass of local beer or cup of warming mulled wine while listening to Christmas carols from Norfolk’s own Pavilion Brass Quintet on the Thursday and Friday and return at the weekend for festive tunes from a traditional fairground organ. Plus, there’ll be all sorts of food and drink stands outside, from waffles and gourmet doughnuts to freshly roasted almond pralines.

The Festive Fair at The Forum is always a popular event, attracting thousands of visitors, and traders and locals alike are pleased to see it back in action again this year. Open from 11am to 7pm on the Thursday, from 10am to 6pm on the Friday and Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm on the Sunday, everyone is welcome and entry is free.

nside there will be East Anglian stalls galore selling everything from jewellery, pottery, plants, textiles, woodcraft, glassware, clothes, tins, art, preserves, Christmas decorations and much more.

Plus, in the spirit of Christmas, this event will also be raising funds for charity, in this instance Norwich-based breast cancer reconstruction charity, Keeping Abreast.

Curried Ramin Noodles

Ramin sometimes refers to the noodles and other times like in this case the broth dish containing the noodles. This dish is very popular in Japan where they are enjoyed for both lunch and dinner. Now tons of Asian restaurants around this area sell Ramin in all sorts of variations. Ramin noodles makes a perfect lunch, the noodles offer energy while the soup is refreshing and filling with just enough zing to kick start your afternoon.

Curried Ramin Noodles (3 – 4) 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional) 4 spring onions – sliced 2 teaspoons madras curry powder 1 garlic – crushed (optional)

If so, then The Real Halloween is the event for you and

your family.

Run by the children’s nature conservation charity The Fairyland, Trust this is the Autumn sister event to their famous Spring Fairy Fair.

Set in a woodland glade in the depths of Norfolk, The Real Halloween is a true celebration of Autumnal magic.

Spend the afternoon making a Magic Wand, a real Broomstick or perhaps a pinecone Owl or Bat. Join in with Witch or Wizard Training, visit the Fairy King and Queen and play in the Witches Kitchen or the Wildlife Hospital. Be entertained by musicians, a Pirate Pantomime and some silly Trolls.

1 lemon grass – finely chopped 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

1 & 1/2 pints stock 1 tin / 400ml coconut milk 2 star anise (optional) 2 lime leaves – dried or fresh (optional) 150g udon noodles (soba or egg noodles) 1 red chilli – finely diced (or half for a milder version) handful Chinese cabbage – chunky diced handful beanshoots handful coriander leaf – roughly chopped seasoning (generous) • Heat the oil in a large saucepan.

Fry the onions to soften and add the curry powder cooking for a minute to release the flavour.

•

Add the garlic, lemon grass, ginger, stock, coconut milk, star anise and lime leaves.

•

Bring to the boil and then rapidly simmer until the liquid reduces by 1/3.

•

Add the noodles and cook for 5 minutes on a gentle heat to soften.

•

Add the chilli and cabbage cooking for a few minutes to soften.

•

When the noodles are soft, add the beanshoots, coriander and your chosen meat, fish or vegetarian version ingredients or leave as is (mine was).

• Heat through for a minute or two, season to taste,

remove the lime leaves and star anise and serve in big bowls.

Ron Nevett’s Market Lunch: Poems of Norwich

A

s dusk falls, everyone gathers to hear the telling of The Real Halloween story before hundreds of candle lanterns are lit and carried through the woods in the Animal Lantern Parade.

Home-made fancy dress is strongly encouraged with a competition and some good prizes to be won. Throughout the day there will be a giant log fire, hot food and drink, traders of magical goods and our very own Good Elf pub selling mulled cider and fine ales.

Booking entrance tickets and workshop tickets in advance is strongly recommended.

Some of my happiest hours this summer were spent in the Castle Museum's celebration of the bicentenary of John Crome (1768--1821), the great painter of the 'Norwich School'. We are so lucky to have pictures like his Norwich River: Afternoon on public display -- and now you can also own it as a fridge magnet!

Crome said that a good painting must be 'one grand plan of light and shade', and I have used that wisdom as the last line of my tribute to his masterpiece. It is dedicated to the writer, photographer and Norwich encyclopaedia Nick Stone, whose 'timeslip' photographs of Crome's landscapes at The Museum of Norwich were wonderfully illuminating.

Norwich Puppet Theatre Reopens its doors from October half term...

orwich Puppet Theatre is reopening its doors this October half term with a trilogy of shows inspired by the Sleeping Beauty story. From Fri 22 – Sun 24 October the Theatre’s new Director, Colette Garrigan, will be performing her Forks - Cie Akselere internationally acclaimed adult version of the tale, set in the gritty suburbs of urban Liverpool.

Family audiences can then enjoy Mark Mander’s Sleeping Beauty Pocket-sized Puppet Panto, a joyful, glittering show in miniature. The 15 minute performances will be available

Sat 23 – Sun 24 October and are open to just six audience members at a time, so book fast for this one!

To complete the set, 100 Years in the Forest will be playing from Sat 23 – Fri 29 October. This brand new production created by Norwich Puppet Theatre and La Compagnie Akselere explores what happens in the forest of fairy tales whilst Sleeping Beauty sleeps. ne of the biggest contemporary art fairs outside of London is set to return for 2021. Art Fair East annually hosts artists, galleries and art dealers from across the world, attracting thousands of visitors to St Andrews Hall in Norwich, Norfolk. The fair, now in its sixth year, will reemerge to share the buzz of the real-life art world after last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic. As the major art fair for the East, the fair was founded in 2015 by leading Norfolk-based artists Will Teather and Brian Korteling, who will both be exhibiting at the event. The pair are passionate about bringing contemporary art to the region, supporting artists and creating excitement around the visual arts. Mr Teather, who has had his work showcased at New York's Market & Design Fair, said: Will Teather in his Studio “We are thrilled to see the fair finally Laslett Credit: Sophie return after an extraordinary year. We can't wait to see the artworld we know and love start to reemerge. “Artworks are objects to be seen and enjoyed in the flesh, rather than online, and there is nothing quite like meeting the artist in person or talking to an expert, as is often possible at art fairs. “We have received a record number of applications to take part in the event and alongside national and international artists being brought by dealers we already have many local talents, including both figurative surrealists like Chedgie and landscape painters like Alice Wilton, on board.”

The Residence Nil Rate Band and the importance of reviewing yourreturns Will for 2021

I

n 2017 the government introduced a new Inheritance Tax allowance called the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB). This new allowance provides a tax-free amount, currently up to £175,000 per person, if certain criteria are met. The RNRB is available in addition to the existing Nil Rate Band of £325,000.

The legislation is complex but essentially if you own a property, which has at some point been your home, and you leave that property to your lineal descendants (for example, children, step-children, grandchildren) on your death, you are likely to be entitled to the RNRB. • The RNRB is transferable between spouses and civil partners, so if one of you doesn’t use it the other could have it added to their own.

• The allowance is capped at the value of your interest in the property concerned. So if your house is worth £150,000, that is the maximum amount of allowance your estate can claim.

• If you downsize before you die, or sell your house because you enter care, there are provisions in place to ensure that your estate can still access the RNRB.

• If the value of your estate exceeds £2million, the allowance begins to taper away. With some careful later life tax planning you could take steps before you die to ensure this doesn’t happen.

With Inheritance Tax rates at 40%, the RNRB could save your estate Inheritance Tax of up to £70,000 as an individual or £140,000 as a couple. However, having access to the allowance relies on the provisions in your Will complying with the requirements of the legislation. Something as common as an age contingency on a gift to grandchildren (so they do not receive their inheritance until they reach the age of 18, 21 or 25) could mean the allowance is lost, either in whole or part. Certain types of trusts can also limit access to the allowance. It is therefore vital that you review your Will if you want to ensure the RNRB is available to you.

Grumpy Corner Well, here we are again getting ready for a winter of discontent which according to our friend at Number 10 isn’t going to happen. Blame the public seems to be the order of the day, if you get Covid your fault, no petrol your fault for following government guidelines to buy fuel normally. This would be fine if there was any at the pumps, no food shortages for Christmas says Boris which reminds me of a football chairman stating he has every confidence in the manager on Monday but he’s gone by Friday!!! But apparently the cavalry are coming, yes the foreign drivers are on there way back to save the day just like the Polish lads in The Battle Of Britain just ask Barry Foster (repeat please). Only they probably won’t turn up this time.

Football, well apart from Anchor junior having a goal disallowed due to the assisting player being deemed offside (VAR for Norwich Sunday League I hear you cry!!) we have said farewell to the Pete Best of soccer the one and only Jimmy Greaves.

They will both be remembered for missing out on the big one, in Pete’s case The Beatles and in Jimmy’s the 1966 World Cup Final and a medal from the Queen!

Queen of her imagination Meagain and the Ginger lad left tinseltown to make some sort of state visit to New York a few days ago. Quite why I do not know but I expect a lecture on parenthood, saving the planet and an Hello photoshoot will follow the photoshopped cover of Time magazine…..notice how Harry is peeking out from behind the in demand actress, with a head on a body that doesn’t look like his own. Meanwhile the nations happy family Kate & Co are surprisingly leaving their Norfolk bolt hole to return to London and their two up two down in Kensington Palace. Hardly surprising since the children go to school in London and Great Grandad and his Range Rover is no longer available to do the school run to Sandringham Primary!

So what next for Blighty, mince pie wars, toy shortage causing festive riots in the toy shops, law and order breaking down, Turkey rustling, boxing day but with real punches?

And to cap it all no Jack Hawkins season on the Christmas telly!!

This all assumes that we will still have power to watch the telly in the first place. I well remember as a lad being very upset by a power cut whilst watching The Persuaders one Friday evening in the winter of discontent and it was the episode where Brett Sinclair entered the British Grand Prix (as you do)!! I didn’t get to see the ending for about 30 years!!!

So let’s hear it for our return to the sunlit uplands promised by Boris (what trade deal with the USA) and Co.

Monty Shaft’s did you know...... ... that I’ve been to a Festival Yes, it was a while ago now (too close to the deadline for the last issue), but I can confirm that the Shafts made our usual pilgrimage down the road to Latitude. It was allowed to go ahead as it was billed as a Test Event, although, apart from providing proof of vaccination on arrival, we didn’t see any evidence that testing, before, at the time, or since was taking place.

Saturday is always the busiest day and much of what occurred on the first day was repeated by the newcomers, including the rapturous applause. There were sadly some cancellations, all Covid related, which meant we didn’t get to see Arlo Parks, Billie Marten, or Fontaines DC, but we did get the irony of the secret guest set being performed by The Vaccines!

It was quite a strange experience. Firstly, people had clearly made the decision to arrive as early as possible. I have never seen it so busy on the Thursday night and it was quite clear, walking around, that many, like us, were trying to get used to being among people again: e.g. unsure how we were supposed to be queueing. Friday lunchtime was our first experience of live music for almost two years, and the first of being in a crowded space – there were noticeably more people listening from outside the tent than usual, sometimes more than were in the tent! It was, however, a highly emotional experience. There was wild applause for pretty much anything that anyone did on stage and many a tear was shed by audience members and performers alike. Every year there is a line that comes from the stages time and time again; this year it was “I told myself I wouldn’t cry”.

By the time we reached Sunday, it was all starting to feel quite normal again: any space in a queue was soon filled. I even heard the odd criticism from the audience towards the stage. How soon we start to take things for granted again! The performers, those who were only there for the day, at least, were still all finding it a novel experience and there were more tears.

All the artists we saw seemed to be at the top of their game, but special mentions for Fenne Lily, Orla Gartland, the thoroughly entertaining CMAT, Liz Lawrence, Supergrass, Dream Wife, Anna Meredith, Bombay Bicycle Club and the extraordinary Working Men’s Club.

EW ALBUM REVIEWS- STEVE HACKETT- ‘Surrender Of Silence’.

With 8 studio albums recorded and released in the last 12 years, 2 being from this year, it has been a productive and creative decade for Steve Hackett. Following on from the largely acoustic, melodic and classical inspired ‘Under a Mediterranean Sky’ comes his new much more electric, angry and darker full band album ‘Surrender Of Silence’. Thematically many of the current woes of the world are explored and deplored both lyrically and instrumentally. Musically, as we have come to expect from him, the album is eclectic encompassing soaring guitar based instrumentals, through dramatic Russian classical and ballet inspired orchestrations with ominous choral lines, Gothic Cathedral organs, metal guitar riffs, world music inspired rhythms and Eastern inspired melodies played on Tar’s and Dutar’s. Lyrically successive Russian dynasties are questioned, Devilish deeds of Shakespearian proportions are enacted, the Himalayas explored, and man’s inhumanity to man deplored, Mexican carnivals and celebrations of the dead evoked, while a wailing and screaming guitar plays the part of the earth as it dies horrifically on ‘Scorched Earth’. If musically it traverses prog, metal, world, classical and even in parts goth lyrically its inspirations stem largely from either myth, or the reality of the world we are living in. With 1 or 2 notable exceptions, mostly a love song for his wife Jo mid album, it feels like his darkest album to date at times feeling like, to paraphrase Faust, ‘This is hell, and I am in it’. For those seeking his soothing acoustic 12 string or more recent Spanish guitar based tunes, despite a brief foray, this may not be the album for you, but for many others it most certainly will be.

Equally loosely inhabiting the world of prog and returning with their first album in 38 years look out for AIRBRIDGE- ‘Memories of Water’ that is due for release on the 10th October. Originally part of a burgeoning early 80s prog scene, touring and playing such prestigious venues as the Marquee they are now part Norwich and Part Italy based. Over the course of the last few years and during lockdown files were exchanged back and forth and an album was assembled. From opening track ‘Fanfare To the Uncommon Worm’ with bells ringing out, sustained and reversed guitars leading into string synths choral voices and joyous melodies through to album conclusion ‘Middle East’ evoking the atmosphere of mystical Morocco there is much of worth to be discovered within. Essentially a duo of Lorenzo Bedini, and Dave Dowdeswell-Allaway they are augmented by Jason Crompton and Maddalena Pastorelli adding keyboards, trumpet and flute. Dave’s songs tend to be the more acoustic covering themes from youthful love compared to a love of early Floyd and Caravan, Japanese poetry and culture, and a commemoration of 3 people’s lives. Among others Lorenzo tackles publish and be damned journalism, life’s inequalities, what our purpose is in life, and in a lighter mood the aptly titled nonsensical ‘Utter Nonsense’. For some time Airbridge were prefixed with the terms what if, or where are. Well, they have returned with an album that is well worth discovering and seeking out.

Norwich band Screen 3 who were signed to Epic records, played tours, John Peel sessions, and reached the outer reaches of the charts. Now he has returned as a solo artist playing Electro pop tunes taking inspiration as he himself states from 40 years of Roxy, to Abba to punk, Kraftwerk, Numan and beyond up to the present day. The album contains what he considers to be the best tracks released digitally as ep’s and singles between 2019 and 21. There are a wealth of songs with hook and lyric lines that will have you humming or singing ‘Last year was a bad year’ or pontificating as to whether you should ‘go out or stay in’. They become earworms, in a good way, racing around your brain. Gary Crowley curated a 4 cd set recently that made the album charts of lost 80s songs that included Screen 3 sharing that box with The Human League, Madness, Style Council and Heaven 17, among others. A belated taste of success. Who knows with this release maybe it will happen again. Initial copies of the album also contain ‘Resynchronisations’ inspired by what Frank Zappa termed ‘Xenochrony’ in which a collection of previously existing songs have been placed into a completely different song to create something completely new.

TOM MOORE and ARCHIE MOSS- Live outdoors at St Gregory’s Green- Norwich. While I have yet to return to indoor concerts or festivals this was one event that I didn’t want to miss. Playing their atmospheric and Fatea award winning album ‘Spectres’ live for the first time due to the pandemic they infused the sounds of the Viola and Accordion with digital and analogue electronics and samples in a unique and magical outdoor concert. Among the highlights were the reflective and atmospheric ‘Omens’ ‘Giga’ and ‘Windmill Hill’, and the jaunty ‘Pop One’ that sounds like it was written for folk dancing. The audience were captivated by them, the duo were appreciative of their support, and very happy to have finally been able to play their album live. A lovely concert.
