What a sad time for honest journalism and the nation as a whole. While it was only being reported that celebrities and politicians were having their phones hacked, nobody cared less. Michael Portillo on the This Week show said that he hadn’t left a message on his mobile answering machine for over 5 years. Then Milly Dowler was brought in to the equation and all hell broke loose and quite rightly so. What really tipped the balance of this furious tidal wave against the Murdoch’s was the Americans getting a sniff of the idea that some of the 9/11 victims may have been hacked. No one is allowed to say anything but “God bless America” when 9/11 is involved and those in power in this country jumped higher than the twin towers when their masters shouted. Don’t get me wrong, I think what has

Conveniently buried under all this is the Euro crisis which could lead to another economic meltdown and the government’s announcement that they are going to trial Badger culls to try and eliminate TB form diary herds. Even the chief scientific adviser to the government has stated on public record that culling Badger won’t work and the only way to eliminate TB in Badgers and therefore the herds is to vaccinate, but this is expensive and it is much cheaper to kill thousands of animals first to see if it works.

happened is an absolute disgrace and those responsible should be punished, but to think that it was only the News of the World that was using these practices I think is wholly wrong and naive. The whole affair is a dirty cocktail of underhand behaviour, high powered favouritism and back rubbing. The Prime Minister and top politicians are implicated, top policemen have resigned, journalists have already been imprisoned and the main whistle blower journalist who said that this method of journalism was wide spread throughout the industry has died! – I think this will be David Cameron’s David Kelly moment!

2018 BECCLES ANTIQUES STREET MARKET

New Exhibition at The Greenhouse Gallery

TOWN CENTRE, BECCLES, SUFFOLK NR34 9HA

Sunday 12th August

BECCLES ANTIQUES STREET MARKET

8am - 4pm

A wide and varied selection of antiques for both the dealer and collector on sale in the historical busy market town of Beccles.

SUNDAY 12th AUGUST 2018 8am – 4.00pm The Beccles Antiques Street Market held in the centre of Beccles will be returning for its second market of the year on Sunday 12th August. The event has gone from strength to strength and now in its ninth year plays host to a hundred general and specialist dealers selling a wide range of good quality antiques and collectables including furniture, silver, china, linen, jewellery, books, clocks, retro and vintage design/clothing and decorative items. Kate Lee from Blyburgate Antiques and Christine Pinsent from Saxons started the market in 2009 and it has gone from strength to strength, “holding two markets on this scale twice a year is a logistical challenge but well worth it for both the sellers and buyers” Many of the local shops and restaurants and bars are open that day and first class local ‘street food’ catering is incorporated into the market, including a hog roast. If you a returning visitor there will be lots of fresh stock available and if haven’t been before you really should give it a visit and experience the pleasure of a busy outdoor specialist market. Free entry, well signposted, SAT NAV NR34 9HA. Follow us on facebook at www.facebook.com/ antiquesmarketbeccles For further details please contact Kate Lee on 01502 711174 6

Well signposted on all routes, plenty of parking and locally produced hot and cold refreshments.

T

he Greenhouse Gallery in Bethel Street, Norwich, is running a new exhibition and associated events from September to October 2018. These will explore the lives of two East Anglian women, Dorothy Jewson and Lady Eve Balfour, highlighting current environmental and social issues and drawing parallels with our past. Whilst these may not be names synonymous with the women’s suffrage or environmental movements, both women enhanced the understanding and appreciation of nature and our environment and actively supported votes for women. Dorothy Jewson (a familiar surname in Norfolk) was Norwich’s first woman MP. She was a Pacifist and Quaker during the First World War and played a significant role in creating some of Norwich’s most popular municipal parks, to support those coming home from the War. During her time as an MP, she campaigned for the provision of birth control information for working class women, resulting in the Labour Women’s Conference vote to provide this to everyone in 1923. Lady Eve Balfour, despite her title and heritage, became a farmer in Suffolk and used her status and expertise to convince

or

Parliament to end the cruel agricultural tithes imposed by the Church of England in the 1930s. She founded the Soil Association in 1952 and wrote The Living Soil, a landmark text for understanding the significance of soil to life on earth. Inspired by the book Why Women Will Save the Planet, published by Friends of the Earth and C40 Cities, the Women’s Climate Leadership Group and to commemorate the centenary of women’s suffrage, the Greenhouse Gallery asks the question: “what does equality and justice look like for women and all life on earth?” It may feel as though not much has changed since Jewson and Balfour’s time, with gender pay gaps, the ‘Me Too’ movement and the high proportion of women dying in ‘natural’ disasters. As Ireland repeals its anti-abortion law, and all around the world women organise, there is the increasing hope that women’s empowerment could finally provide the solution to climate change and create a just and equal society. Local History Matters FOURTEEN YEARS AFTER A FAMOUS NORWICH FACTORY CLOSED, IT IS STILL POSSIBLE TO SEE AND ADMIRE A RELIC FROM ITS HEYDAY – IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK!

T

he famous factory in question was originally owned by the Caley family whose trading history can be traced back to Albert Jarman Caley, who opened a chemists business in a cellar in London Street, Norwich, in 1857. The name of Caley became synonymous with the manufacture of chocolate and those of us of a certain age can still remember the rather special ‘enticingly aromatic flavour’ added to the atmosphere in the vicinity of the factory in Chapelfield when it was in full production! In fact, today’s ever-popular ‘Chapelfield Shopping Precinct’ sits more or less on the foot-print of the old Caley-come-Mackintosh factory site. Making eating chocolate came on stream in 1886 but three years previous to that the company had first launched its drinking chocolate in 1883. At the height of its fame Caley’s could number the royal family and Parliament amongst its VIP customers. The period of the First World War (1914-18) saw the introduction of Caley’s famous ’Marching Chocolate’ for the British soldiers. It was so popular that it acquired the cute nick-name of ‘Marcho’. The troops enjoyed either milk or dark chocolate varieties. In 1932 John Mackintosh & Sons of Yorkshire

acquired Caley’s for a price believed to have been in the region of £140,000 – which doesn’t sound much by today’s standards of take-over purchases. The Norwich factory expanded in consequence with upwards of one-thousand personnel being employed on site. In 1942 enemy bombing during ‘The Blitz’ attacks on the city destroyed the factory. Five years later, in 1947, the reconstructed factory opened once more. In 1969 Mackintosh’s merged with Rowntree’s of York and Nestlé eventually acquired this consortium in 1988. Sadly, the Norwich factory was closed in 1994. In 1996 three former executives acquired the Caley brand and started producing chocolate once more. If you want to catch up with an extant production component of the old Caley empire you need only to go into Norwich Cathedral and look for the modern, splendidly burnished, copper font situated in the nave of the building. The illustration above gives a very good idea of what to look for. Since about 1994 this object has been used for the Baptism of children and adults, whereas, in its earlier factory life as a vat, toffee was made in it. Strange, but true!

I started my business in 2016, and have over 20 years of pet care experience, as well as owning my own pampered cat - which is the reason I set up. I was sure there was other cat owners like me who worried about an unsuspecting volunteer letting out my indoor cat, not giving her the right food, or not letting her drink from the tap! Cats are territorial creatures, and love their home comforts, so why should it to be any different when you go on holiday, weekends away or work trips? It saves them the stress of the cattery, as well as you the stress of getting them there! You will instantly see the difference that staying at home makes on your return, and it reduces the risk of urinary tract infections, depression and stress when they stay in their normal routine. I work 7 days a week, all year round, so send me a message today. I look forward to meeting your precious pets! www.catladynorwich.co.uk

ell, you’d better tell them to look away now, because I LOVE IT!! I’m writing this in the downtime between the England v Colombia game and the Sweden Quarter Final and by the time you read it the World Cup will be over and England will have either won it, or, as they have been so often, bowed out as plucky losers. But let’s face it, they’ve already done much better than anybody expected. In fact, I think most people are just happy that we won a penalty shootout and would treat the players as heroes if they came home now! It was a rum old game, the Colombian one. The antics of the Colombian players, the wrestling to the ground of Harry Kane and the inexplicably bemused looks on the faces of the Colombians when the penalty was given, the way that the England players all went straight to Pickford rather than Dier after he scored, the way Dier tried to join in the ‘bundle’ and completely missed (look for the footage on YouTube, it’s hilarious), Pickford having made the greatest, ultimately pointless save we’re ever likely to see. But mainly the unbelievable rant against ‘cheating England’ and the ‘cheating referee’ by the ‘absolutely, definitely not a cheat’ Maradona! Bereft of superstars – the Golden

Generation of Lampard, Gerard and Rooney have given way to the Meh! Generation of Henderson, Dier and LoftusCheek – the media have been desperate to promote Harry Kane to superstardom, but he’s having none of it, despite the fact that every opposition defender seems to love him so much they want to give him a cuddle at every opportunity! In fact, if we’ve learnt anything from this World Cup, it’s that it’s not enough to just rely on your superstar player. While Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar showed some early promise that they might shine, neither Spain, Portugal, Brazil nor Uruguay (with Suarez) have made the Semi Finals. The teams that have made it are either teams with no stars, like England, Sweden, Russia or Croatia (we don’t which two yet), or teams with several superstars who have suddenly realised that you have to play like an actual team, like Belgium and France. As I said above, either we’ve set the World In Motion and It’s Coming Home (whatever that means), or we’ve crashed and burnt like the World Cup song written by Echo & The Bunnymen for The Spice Girls – I’m still not sure whether I dreamt that. Bring on the Penalties!! And, as Barry Davies certainly didn’t say, “Where were the Germans? Frankly, they’re all coming over here to play for Norwich!”

he value of your investment portfolio can change from day to day depending on market conditions. Phil Beck looks at how to weather the ups and downs of the investment market. When building an investment portfolio that is suitable for you, we will normally include a mix of different investments so that your portfolio is diverse. By not having all your eggs in one basket, you are normally exposed to less risk of your portfolio losing significant value all in one go. Of course, we will have assessed your risk profile before making a recommendation and the mix we recommend will sit within your agreed comfort zone in terms of investment risk. Diversification is just one way of helping to keep your portfolio on track. For many clients we will also recommend a form of investment management from one of our partner

Discretionary Fund Managers, often through the use of a managed portfolio. When you sign up to this service, you permit the appointed investment manager to make changes to the make-up of your portfolio on a regular basis without referring back to you each time. Investment managers are market specialists and are watching trends and market activity all the time, allowing them to spot movements in the market and adjust your portfolio accordingly. We find our clients really value having an expert keep an eye on their portfolio on a regular basis. The cost of investment management can vary but we can usually recommend a suitable service for every client, depending on their requirements. The value of an investment and the income from it could go down as well as up. The return at the end of the investment period is not guaranteed and you

may get back less than you originally invested. The tax treatment of investments depends on individual circumstances and is subject to change. For independent advice about your financial planning, contact Phil on 01603 706740 or email phil.beck@ almarygreen.com. Now in its third year, Inspiring Females has reached over 1000 girls and, with the support of 250 amazing guest speakers, continues to deliver a range of events designed to connect, educate and empower Norfolk’s young women. The day was filled with keynote presentations, mentoring sessions, Q&A panels and interactive workshops, all shaped by an amazing group of girls and the 25 inspirational guests in attendance. One of those guests was Leadership expert Jo Cruse, who said: “You are an extraordinary generation of women. Your potential is limitless. But just because you can do anything, doesn’t mean you have to do everything”. Due to popular demand, YouTube vlogger and make-up artist Sam Chapman spoke twice on her personal journey, sharing her Inspiring Females experience with her 791k Instagram followers.

Norwich High School Headmistress Kirsty von Malaisé said, “The Summit resonated with so much inspiration, and the girls and guests were both moved and stimulated to become change-makers in their own lives, and for the good of others. It was a powerful experience, an uplifting one, which I know has had a big impact on those who were there.” The next event will be Inspiring: Arts, a LIVE BBC Radio Norfolk Broadcast on Monday 15th October 2018. In Praise of Squash I love squash and I tend to grow three different varieties. The easiest is Little Gem which, when hollowed, spiced with pesto and baked for about half an hour makes excellent soup in its own edible container. The rudest is Nice Long which gives one of my allotment neighbours penis envy. It is very easy to slice into meal sized chunks. My favourite to eat is butternut but success with growing it is hit and miss. Another one of my allotment neighbours, on the other hand, plants very unpromising, scraggly specimens around June/July every year and a couple of months later comes with his wheelbarrow and collects up to thirty squashes from no more than three plants. To say I’m envious is an understatement! So this year I’ve decided to shadow him. Seeds were sown into shop bought compost on April 21st and transplanted into small pots filled with home made compost a month later. After two weeks in a sheltered spot the seedlings were planted out on top of a rectangular mound running north south to maximise sunshine and warmth. To get water to the roots we angled small pots into the soil near the base of the plants. Two weeks on and his plants are romping away whereas mine are merely growing. I might have to resort to applying fertilising juice from my wormery to catch up but the game isn’t over yet and for now I am happy to watch and wait. BIRGIT GRIEM 20

Get Out There in Great Yarmouth to celebrate 250 years of circus

T

his year marks the 11th year of the Out There International Festival of Circus & Street Art, three days of outstanding circus and street arts that bring Great Yarmouth alight with spectacle, thrills and sensational fun for all the family - and it’s all completely free! The festival takes place all over the town centre and seafront from 14-16 September. This year it’s part of Circus250, the Europewide celebration of the first ever circus anywhere in the world, staged in 1768 on the southbank of the Thames in London by showman Philip Astley. For this celebration the national focus falls on Great Yarmouth, which has been jointly designated with Norwich as one of the six UK Cities of Circus by Circus250 bosses. The big Saturday headline event comes from French street arts titans, Générik Vapeur, who will be returning to Great Yarmouth to create a special Circus250 version of their legendary loud and anarchic street show Bivouac, especially for Out There Festival featuring 250 local people. First seen in Great Yarmouth in 2010, Bivouac is still imprinted on the minds of everyone that saw it. Blue men and women

marched, ran and danced through the streets in a pyrotechnic extravaganza, banging oil drums and accompanied by fire, smoke loud music and general mayhem, leading to a spectacular crashing finale. Out There attracts more than 50,000 people from all over the eastern region and beyond making it one of the biggest weekend events in the region and boosting the local economy. It has built a reputation for presenting the weird and wonderful, the outrageous and outstanding, featuring a cosmopolitan line up of acts from the across the globe. This year is no exception with around 30 companies from countries including France, Spain and New Zealand. Many of the international companies will be creating new shows in the town, featuring exciting new international collaborations that will go on to tour the world after being seen in Great Yarmouth first – as well as collaborating with local people. With so much free activity, if you can only visit this Norfolk seaside gem once this year this is definitely the weekend for it! Full details of the Out There Festival can be found at www.outtherefestival.com

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Norwich’s Voice Project and in celebration a very special concert will take place on Saturday 22 December at Norwich’s St Andrews Hall. They will be joined by some of the special guest singers and musicians who have taken part over the years - and you could be part of the choir too! The Voice Project Choir is a community choir that absolutely anyone can join whether they have any experience of singing and music or not - there are no auditions and everything is taught by ear with no need to read music. Anyone interested can simply attend the obligation free taster session on 2 October or the first rehearsal on 9 October. Since their creation in 2008, the Voice Project’s have sung at international festivals around the UK and mainland Europe. They perform annual concerts at Norfolk & Norwich Festival appearing with significant guests from the jazz and contemporary music fields. As an ‘outstanding’ independent fostering agency, our carers have the support of a dedicated social worker and a local team who are always available to help.

Summer Pudding - Berrylishious

could you foster? We are looking for foster carers for our Nexus 360 and Care+ packages.

(4 individual portions*) 8 slices medium white bread 500 g mixed berries – washed and chopped 2 tablespoons caster sugar 3 tablespoons water 2 tablespoon cassis or other relevant fruit liquor (optional) 1 split vanilla pod or 1 teaspoon vanilla essence– (optional) • In a saucepan add the berries, sugar, water, liquor and vanilla. • Bring to the boil and then simmer for 5 minutes to allow the berries to soften and the sauce to thicken slightly. • Cool slightly and then separate the juice from the berries by straining over a colander, leaving for 5 minutes to encourage more juice to drain – Keep the juice (remove vanilla pod – if using). • Meanwhile – prepare the bread. Cut out a top and a bottom using your individual ramekins, moulds or pots as a template. Using 4 slices of bread – you should get 2 circles out of each slice, if not use more bread. • With the other 4 slices – de-crust, half and 24

then cut each half in to three rectangle pieces. • Dip the bread in to the strained juice and then gently press in to the ramekins, line the sides with the dipped rectangle pieces. • Then spoon in the strained berries, pushing the mix down firmly in to the middles of the bread lined moulds. • Finally soak the top piece of bread in the juice and push on top of the ramekins. • Liquidise the remaining berries and juice and reserve to serve on the side. • Ideally you would weight each summer pudding down and allow to set in the fridge for several hours or over night. • To serve, roll a knife round the edge and turn out on to a plate, serve with the remaining juice and single cream, mascarpone, creme fraiche or natural yogurt. One of which is visiting dance schools around the country, teaching people to dance because he says “Dancing is what makes people happy! My aim is to get the entire country up and dancing!” Tickets now on sale from www. becclespublichall.co.uk, the Box Office (Monday to Saturday 10am-3pm), or ring 01502 770060. ere we are then and as I write we are on the eve of a world Cup Quarter Final against the nation that has given us Volvo, ABBA and Viking raiders. Will Gareth’s boys be able to cope with those longships and bloodaxes without the likes of Jack Hawkins, Richard Todd and seemingly Jamie Vardy! We need to progress further if only to distance ourselves from a couple of past and coming events namely the Royal Wedding or the Me Again Show and the arrival of the ever popular Harley riding President of the USA! The Royal Wedding well it stayed fine for them didn’t it and they all turned up apart from Me Again’s family! They were too busy on breakfast TV explaining how they all really loved Me Again and had supported her through thick and thin, divorces and marriages but hadn’t really seen her for twenty years. The wedding did seem to bring the pantomime sisters into focus as alleged style icons (maybe from Planet Zog) and their mother seems to have spent the last two months drooling over ex husband and grovelling to the queen. Latest reports tell of her sending a “well done” message to our boy’s in Russia so no doubt that and the fact the Greeks didn’t qualify and the Germans left early has left the von Windsors with only one team left to support…. But personally I don’t fancy the Romanovs chances against Croatia!! Donald “Armageddon” Trump arrives in town soon but apparently is opting to spend most of his time away from London, I’m sure that has nothing to do with his waning popularity

Showing until Sunday 9 September, 10am - 4.30pm DRAWN TO THE COAST: TURNER, CONSTABLE COTMAN (that’s if he ever had any). Poor show really because he needs to see what a worldwide sporting tournament is (as in many countries taking part) unlike various American World Series where there is only one nation (possibly Canada occasionally) involved. You would think that if Football really does come home he would want to hang around and take the credit and give yet another mind expanding speech! Or would he just claim the Americans won it anyway? So will it be 1966 and all that…..

Sculpture trail set to grace the Waveney Valley this summer

A

trail of sculptures and site-specific artwork will lead visitors to an idyllic site in the Waveney Valley this summer. The fifth Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail will host the work of more than 30 artists on a three-acre site of hidden paths, romantic groves and secretive corners in a littleknown site on the edge of the Waveney Valley.

The trail will feature site-specific work with artists working with ceramics, stone, bronze, steel, wood, wool, glass, clay, perspex, marble, MDF, seedheads, resin, aluminium and sound. A programme of workshops, guided walks, and events will accompany the event, including a curator’s guided tour of the site to give people an insight into how the sculpture trail was created.

Organised by Waveney & Blyth Arts the event builds on the success of last year’s trail and will take place at the Raveningham Centre, ten miles south of Norwich.

A number of assistance schemes are in place including a British Sign Language interpreted Curator’s Walk and a portable hearing loop for workshops and walks.

The Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail annually attracts thousands of visitors to the region to see the work of artists from around the country.

The Ravenous Café, on site, will be open throughout the trail and will host the exhibition of paintings, prints, textiles and 3-D work by the Harleston & Waveney Art Trail collective.

Many established artists such as Simon Griffiths, Rob Harries, Gordon Senior, Jim Racine, Patrick Elder and Mike Challis will be joined by up and coming artists taking part for the first time. Curator Sarah Cannell, who has encouraged artists to create work in response to the site, said: “This is our second year at the magical Raveningham site and our fifth annual Sculpture Trail in South Norfolk. “I am looking forward to making a success of the 2018 Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail at Raveningham and welcoming visitors from 17th August.” 34

A pop-up shop will also be selling a selection of the artists’ work. The trail is open from Friday, August 17 until Sunday, September 16 2018 and is open every day from 10am until 5pm. Admission is £5 for adults, £4 for members of Waveney and Blyth Arts, under 18s go free. Pay on entry only. Some of the trail is wheelchair accessible. Well behaved dogs are allowed on a lead. riday night’s Music House Acoustic ish sessions at Jurnets bar Wensum Lodge are always a great showcase for interesting and talented local artists. Mixing Klezmer with hints of The Tiger Lillies The Joey Herzfeld Quartet lyrically amused and raised eyebrows notably on ‘You’ll Have To Do’ with Joey, weighed down with accordion centre stage seemingly angling for a spot at a Bavarian beer fest. Over The Waterfall, more subtle songs and intricate instrumentals featured fluent flutes and fiddles over gentle guitar and double bass creating languid sounds well suited to this ancient crypt. Johnny Steinberg sang earthy life story based songs from behind a piano exemplified by ‘Set Sail’ alongside one of his heroes Neil Young, while at a separate session Tommy Johnson’s emotive voice and echoey guitar moved into John Martyn territory as the set progressed, while Niamh amiable rapport with the audience led to tales of love gone wrong on ‘Ghosts’ and a soldier returning from the war in ‘1943’ suggesting hints of 60s singer songwriters. The same night the truly magnificent classical guitarist Peter Turrell produced one of his most magical performances effortlessly performing pieces written for the lute alongside mesmerising renditions of ‘memories of the Al Hambra’ and ‘Asterios’ during which such was the rapt attention from the audience you could literally have heard a pin drop. This guy is phenomenal, lives locally, and puts on the Lights Out nights on the first Monday of the month at the Louis Marchesi, and every Sunday night at Platform 12. Go

see him. He is amazing. The night that he played was organised by Shane who is also putting nights on at Cactus Café, The Reindeer, and Last Pub Standing. Check venues for dates. Meanwhile Jurnets bar closes for August and resumes again in early September. They also play host to the Psychedelic circus nights mostly on the second Wednesday of every month. Thinking of which the O/S/T nights also seem to have resumed at Cinema City on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in the month. I missed Latitude this year for the first time since it began and as well as Jurnets and watching the world cup I went to see old friends The Legendary Gazelles playing at Gringos instead. Playing infrequently and now based in 3 separate parts of the U.K their late 70s power pop and new wave with hints of blues inspired sounds went down well and while mostly playing to existing friends and fans catchy songs such as ‘Anything For You’ linger long in the memory.
