hew! What a scorcher it has been... as i write this, we have just endured two days of record breaking temperatures. 40.3° was recorded in Lincolnshire on 19th July. These blistering temperatures highlight the growing emergency that is climate change and the need for action! Today is the last day of term for many of the schools around here including the one my daughters attend. I cannot wait to spend some time with them over the holidays making more memories. heir witty and interactive new show, Stel & Wes Fight the Flood will be performing at the Theatre and in the Plantation Gardens between 2-7 August. When Stella the stoat and Wesley the weasel are separated by rising waters, they’ll do anything to stay together and save their home, including travelling back in time... This show is especially impressive as it’s been made entirely from recycled/reused materials. Families can also take part in a ‘Puppets in the Garden’ outdoor event at the Theatre. Participants get to watch a performance from a guest theatre company, then join in with some show themed activities. You can even bring a picnic! The first ‘Puppets in the Garden’ show is Up Jumped the Crab on Fri 19 August. It’s a charming tale of a day at the sea with the Cromer crab fisherman.

There can be a lot to think about when someone dies, at what is almost certainly a very emotional time. For that reason, Not For Profit Law offer a Free Initial Probate Advice service to anyone who has lost a loved one, or is in charge of dealing with an estate.
Laura van Ree and Trina Worden are two local solicitors who set up Not For Profit Law to ‘do law differently’. They also advise on Wills, Tax Planning, Trusts, Powers of Attorney and the Court of Protection.

I
n 2017 the government introduced a new Inheritance Tax allowance called the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB). This new allowance provides a tax-free amount, currently up to £175,000 per person, if certain criteria are met. The RNRB is available in addition to the existing Nil Rate Band of £325,000. The legislation is complex but essentially if you own a property, which has at some point been your home, and you leave that property to your lineal descendants (for example, children, step-children, grandchildren) on your death, you are likely to be entitled to the RNRB.

ate Band and eviewing your Will •The RNRB is transferable between spouses and civil partners, so if one of you doesn’t use it the other could have it added to their own. •The allowance is capped at the value of your interest in the property concerned. So if your house is worth £150,000, that is the maximum amount of allowance your estate can claim. •If you downsize before you die, or sell your house because you enter care, there are provisions in place to ensure that your estate can still access the RNRB. •If the value of your estate exceeds £2million, the allowance begins to taper away. With some careful later life tax planning you could take steps before you die to ensure this doesn’t happen. With Inheritance Tax rates at 40%, the RNRB could save your estate Inheritance Tax of up to £70,000 as an individual or £140,000 as a couple. However, having access to the allowance relies on the provisions in your Will complying with the requirements of the legislation. Something as common as an age contingency on a gift to grandchildren (so they do not receive their inheritance until they reach the age of 18, 21 or 25) could mean the allowance is lost, either in whole or part. Certain types of trusts can also limit access to the allowance. It is therefore vital that you review your Will if you want to ensure the RNRB is available to you. Not For Profit Law currently offer a free Will Review service for anyone living in Norfolk who wants to check whether their Will is tax efficient and/or still does what they want.

Norwich Theatre launches first studio-scale regional tour of Norfolk based show
The show will open and close at Norwich Theatre’s Stage Two in Norwich, situated behind the Theatre Royal. It will then go on tour around the region, calling at theatres in Colchester, Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft, Sheringham, Wells, Diss, Great Yarmouth, and Thetford.

Head of Programming at Norwich Theatre, Sam Bain said: “As a Norfolk theatre, we believe it’s really important that we shine a light on and amplify local stories and voices. We’re very excited to be partnering with a theatre company that emerged from Norwich to bring you a story by a Norfolk writer, set in Cromer and featuring local characters. And even more excited to be taking it to so many great local venues in our region.” The play is written by James McDermott, a scriptwriter and performance poet based in East Anglia. Relish Theatre is a theatre company with its roots in Norwich, dedicated to showcasing the work of regional talent.

N
orwich Theatre is breaking down geographical barriers to theatre by taking its newest production – of local playwright James McDermott’s Cromer-set play Time and Tide – on tour around East Anglia, from 29 September until 23 October. Time And Tide is an LGBT comic drama about a Norfolk community struggling with change. May runs a crumbling caff on the end of Cromer Pier. Her delivery man, Ken, is running out of customers, thanks to Costa. Nemo is desperate to tread the boards in London and his unrequited love, Daz, is burying his head in the sand over his best mate leaving.

Inner Space really is a Hidden Gem
and dad. The Jubilee came and went as we celebrated 70 years of knowing our place and being ready to bow and scrape at the drop of a hat. The race for No.10 hots up in the heat with Rishi still out in front safe in the knowledge that should he fail and fall on hard times he can always get his wife to bail him out. Then we have Penny who we have never heard of being pushed out by Liz “where’s my tank” Truss. Liz is apparently in true Boris style rewriting her childhood days in Leeds where she tells the tale of hardship and left wing atrocities in the leafy Leeds suburb of Roundhay (think of Eaton and Cringleford) which in her days there was a true blue constituency. But why let the truth stand in the way of a good story…..and if in doubt on that ask Boris. This hot weather brings to mind our brave lads going out to do battle in Qatar and also the closing scene of Ice Cold In Alex…… worth waiting for (it really is)!! Will the lads emulate our plucky Lionesses who I think stand more chance of bringing football home than Gareth’s “we might score in open play if we’re lucky” band of brothers. I’m still thinking they may struggle against Rommel and his Panzers. Since my last epistle I’m proud to say that after two years of dodging and non partying I too have suffered from Covid so that sets me up nicely to get it again in time to watch Gareth’s waistcoat make it’s appearance for the Group games. There’s still always hope of a Jack Hawkins or Tony Hancock season for after we are knocked out.. Here Comes Summer
W. Anchor (RN)
Walking along St. Benedict's Street you probably won't notice Inner Space, but look into Maude Gray Court (next to Farmyard restaurant) and you will see our blue building. We have been described as a 'hidden gem' and a 'quiet haven'. The building was originally a recording studio and therefore benefits from sound proofed rooms keeping the hustle and bustle of the outside world, firmly outside. Once inside visitors forget they are in the city centre, commenting on the peaceful atmosphere. There are certainly no external distractions to disturb the daily classes in the main studio or the therapy sessions in the small studio. Our teachers and therapists are fully qualified and insured. They are also passionate and enthusiastic about what they offer, so whatever you are looking for, you are certainly in safe hands. Visit our website to find a yoga, pilates, taichi or qigong class or have look at the list of therapies on offer at Inner Space. If you are looking for a peaceful space to hold a class or workshop, or would like to register with us to practice your therapy just get in touch.

orwich Theatre is delighted to announce Amanda Henderson as Pat the Cow and Linda JohnPierre as Fairy Fullobeans to star in this year's pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, opening at Norwich Theatre Royal Saturday 10 December 2022, running until Saturday 7 January 2023. Amanda Henderson will become Pat the Cow in the pantomime. She is well-known for starring as Nurse Robyn Miller in BBC drama, Casualty. She also appeared in the Academy Award-winning movie version of Les Misérables and is an accomplished stage actress with roles in Cameron Mackintosh's blockbusting musical Oliver! and Everybody Loves A Winner at Manchester Royal Exchange. Amanda returns to Norwich Theatre after starring in Cinderella in 2019 as one of the Ugly Sisters. Joining Amanda is Britain's Got Talent, Linda John-Pierre, who will bring her amazing vocal talent to the role of Fairy Fullobeans. Speaking about her new role, Linda said: "I cannot begin to tell you how excited and
thrilled I am to work with such a stellar cast on Jack and the Beanstalk at Norwich Theatre Royal this year. So be prepared for lots of giggles and heaps of fun. Looking forward to seeing you all soon." Paola Pozzi, Marketing & Communications Director at Norwich Theatre, said: "We're so delighted to have two stellar performers in Amanda and Linda joining us for this year's pantomime. This is a hugely talented team of actors, and they will undoubtedly bring the magic, sparkle and fun to Norwich Theatre Royal this Christmas season.” They will join the recently-announced Joe Tracini in the title role of Jack, who won the hearts of the Norwich Theatre Royal audiences as Tommy the Cat in last year’s pantomime. Plus Norwich's favourite panto dame Richard Gauntlett with further casting to be announced soon. Jack and the Beanstalk tells the story of hero Jack, who swaps his family's cow for a bag of magic beans. By climbing the beanstalk of the beans he planted, he finds himself on a GIANT adventure. The show will be jam-packed full of slapstick comedy, laugh-out-loud gags, outrageous costumes, dazzling song and dance numbers and plenty of chances to cheer, boo and hiss.
This will be a lively show that is full of beans!

As part of the international Mayors for Peace programme, which the city council is a member of, seeds from hibaku-jumoku or ‘survivor’ trees have been gifted to cities across the world, including Norwich. The idea is for the seeds to be germinated and the trees planted in a location where people can gather to nurture them and reflect on peace. In Norwich, one of the Ginkgo trees will be planted in Chapelfield Gardens – with another at Easton College where the seeds have been germinated. Lord Mayor of Norwich, Dr Kevin Maguire, said: “Norwich prides itself on being a diverse city and a welcoming city, where people have lived together in harmony – from the ‘strangers’ who arrived here in the sixteenth century, to those fleeing conflict in more recent years. “Alongside residents who are opening up their

NHS Foundation Trust
Only 1% of people currently die in circumstances where organ donation is possible. This means that every potential donor is precious. Cyclist Andy Hornby, 50, was training for a triathlon when he was involved in a serious collision. Sadly, he wasn’t able to survive his injuries. He donated his kidneys, liver, heart valves, eyes, bone and tendons, which has been a great source of comfort to his family. Andy’s wife, Charlotte, said: “We did not expect Andy’s life to come to a sudden end, but I am so grateful that we had that conversation because it made it easier, and I could not think of a reason to say no. To give the gift of life is one of the most precious things anyone can do.” Even though the laws around organ donation have now changed to an opt out system in England, Scotland and Wales, families will always be consulted before organ donation goes ahead. Organ Donation Week runs from 19 to 25 September 2022 and provides a great opportunity to show your support by

registering as an organ donor and starting conversations about organ donation with your loved ones, just like Andy did. Natalie Ashley, Specialist Nurse Organ Donation concludes: “Having these important conversations will make it much easier for families to make a decision if they are ever asked to support a loved one to donate”.
Last year 27 people in the area became donors after their death, which led to 60 transplants taking place.

The Nimmo Twins mark 25 years at Norwich Theatre
F
or one night only, Norfolk's favourite comedy duo, Karl Minns and Owen Evans, aka The Nimmo Twins, will be taking to the Theatre Royal stage for the first time to celebrate 25 years together in their new show Holt? Who Goes There? The pair have been delighting audiences for years with ridiculously witty sketches, running jokes and shambling characters. This show will see new characters as well as old favourites including, She Go, The Council, Billy Boy, Anne and Tom Bland. Reflecting on the 25 years and how the Nimmo Twins have changed, Karl said: "The shows are better, definitely. It was a surprise looking back over the old scripts and realising how loose and baggy they were. Also, attitudes and sensibilities have changed in the world around us, and we've changed with them."
Karl explains that he and Owen "first performed together at Norwich Arts Centre as part of the Crude Apache Event 2 in 1997." At the show's core are keenly observed sketches that feature characters that have developed over the years. But who is Karl's favourite? "I love watching Owen perform Anne, the awful Evening News poet: it's an absolute joy.” And that he performs? “I'd say She Go, as she's been around the longest and is the most popular and fully realised. She Go always gets a big cheer when she comes on. Audiences have grown up with her over the last 20 years. But talking with people afterwards, everyone has a different part of the show they like, which is very gratifying." Holt? Who Goes There? is at Norwich Theatre Royal on 23 Aug 2022. e’ve been as busy as the bees this year at Grapes Hill Community Garden. Throughout Spring we had three wonderful workshops on Yoga, Creative Writing & LinoPrinting. We also held our ever-popular ‘Wild in the Garden’ event, followed by ‘A Celebration of International Culture’ during Refugee Week. We hosted visits, talks, garden tours & work sessions for various groups including Groundwork East, thanks to whom we now have an extra area of shelter created. The Matthew Project, On Track Group, have helped with seed sowing & transplanting and recently took on their own raised bed.

ost of the talk on the allotment these past few weeks has been about water - or the lack of it. The only water we have is collected via a system of pipes and watertanks from a kindly neighbour’s shed roof but everything ran dry around the middle of June. As a result of the no dig method my soil stayed relatively moist for about a month longer than my neighbours’ but even my plants need watering on a regular basis. Fortunately, we are, of course, not entirely without water. Sometimes someone with a pump extracts water from a well in a neighbouring garden, or we carry it from home. However, scarcity of water does not make for a happy allotment site.
We’ve given talks & tours to various other groups including Notre Dame High School pupils, the Train Wood Group and The Bloom project, via The Feed. Recent funding has enabled us to develop an exciting new ‘Community Roots’ project. Check for details online & on our garden notice board. New volunteers always welcome, whatever your age or experience, and a Big Thanks to those who already do. Words & Pictures by Jo Rice.
Thank You For The Rain which received a free screening during Refugee Week. It described the difficulties caused for a Kenyan farmer by water. As a result of the climate emergency, even in the bread basket of Africa the rains are no longer reliable. When they did finally come, the children’s excitement was infectious, the women were making plans for water based washing and cleaning, and the farmers’ gratitude was humbling. The devastation, when it also came, first in the form of a violent storm that destroyed housing on a significant scale, and then by flooding which literally drowned the crops, was heart breaking. I think about this film a lot, particularly when I am working on my plot, and count myself very lucky to be living where I do.

ell, I say ‘in the middle’, but who knows how long it will last? I am writing this in the middle of July, as we go into a period of 3 days with a weather warning for extreme heat, a period during which it is expected that the highest temperature record will be broken, at least once. I have checked the longer forecast – concerned at what Latitude might bring next weekend – and see that, if correct, the temperature will drop to something more manageable, but there is no prospect of any rain in the next ten days. Europe, Spain and Portugal particularly, have been enduring temperatures in the mid to high 40’s this week. Having carried out a bit of research (this thing isn’t just thrown together, you know) I see that the 10 hottest years in the UK since 1880 have all been within the last 20 years, as have 7 of 10 the hottest days, including the hottest in 2019.

Now I’m not a fanatic and completely agree that there is a discussion to be had on what is causing this and how it is to be rectified, but the one thing I don’t understand is climate change denial. Just look out of your own window, or watch footage of the increasingly frequent worldwide extreme weather events. By all means argue over what it means, but don’t deny that it’s actually happening! I mention this because the other main event hogging the news at the moment (Ukraine seems to have been relegated for now) is the farcical Tory leadership ‘race’. One certainly, and possibly two, of the candidates is either a climate

change denier themselves, or is funded by and lobbies for climate change denying institutions. My next line was going to be “How can you possibly trust the judgement of someone who doesn’t accept what they are seeing with their own eyes”, but it then occurred to me that that actually seems to have been a major requirement for anyone in the current government and very much so with all the remaining candidates. Yes, BoJo the Clown has left the circus, or rather he has said that he will leave the circus, but remains there for now making appointments to the government and the House of Lords. In his resignation speech (in which he didn’t resign) he said he took full responsibility for everything (but didn’t say sorry) and then proceeded to blame everyone else, showing the total lack of class and integrity we’ve come to expect. His, and his sycophantic supporters, much repeated claims that he got all the big calls right always makes me laugh (but not in a good way) and, as he clearly got all the big calls wrong, wonder exactly what it is that he/they consider the ‘big calls’ to be. Perhaps he means that he chose the right wallpaper for the flat, and that firing/causing to resign all his ethics advisors was a big call, and that appointing Dorries as Culture Minister and making up jobs for Rees-Mogg was the right thing to do. Anyway, by the time of the next issue, we’ll know who the next chief clown will be. Does anyone over 10 years-old really like circuses?

Balancing chemicals - The myths that exist about our minds
Richard Penguin’s
A
Once upon a time, GP surgeries used to be treated to ‘Drug Lunches’. A ‘rep’ for a pharmaceutical company would arrive with a variety of M&S sandwiches, snacks and desserts. This provided a break to the hard-working surgery, and a way to plug the latest product that was being promoted to treat piles, or help with controlling blood sugars, all that good stuff. One canny drug manufacturer had the great idea of declaring that their drug actually ‘fixed’ the chemical imbalance in the brain. Something I heard a media ‘doctor’ repeat this July, perpetuating a myth, that such a thing exists. When you go to see a doctor for your low mood, despair or distress, ask them to do a blood test to check your chemical imbalance. See what happens. Labels for emotional states are made up by a board of American psychiatrists, the majority of whom have links to pharmaceutical companies. If you wish to discover more, check out this publisher, which majors in all things to do with making sense of emotional distress. https://www.pccs-books.co.uk. The next time you are prescribed a drug for your ‘depression’ or ‘anxiety’, be aware that it isn’t a ‘cure’. It is similar to any other legal or illegal drug, it is ‘drugging’ you. If some kind of electrical shock treatment is advised, remember the 60’s, when people banged their TV sets to get them going. We deserve more sophisticated and caring approaches to distress.

s Jurnets bar has yet to re-open the Psychedelic Circus has found a new home every third Wednesday at the Brickmakers. Opening the evening and unleashing his latest creation upon the world was an old musical friend of mine performing as Foyster’s Grim Favours. Part dark Poetry, part grim (or should that be Grimm) tales, and part cockney singalong his current persona is like a cross between Dick Van Dyke and Bela Lugosi. Murderous and mischievous tales aplenty this is definitely one for those who like their tales laced with humour as well as arsenic. Splendid. Meanwhile More Soup Music aka Rob took to the venues resident grand piano with aplomb. The centre piece of his set is the 20 minute epic ‘Home By the Sea’ with its musical evocation of waves crashing against the shore being enhanced by video man Richard Rix’s imagery of real life stormy seas and in other parts suitably serene one’s and sunsets resulting in a feast of nature for the eyes and ears. An emotive player his set ranged from the serene and sombre to the jaunty. Look out for him. Concluding the night were Dark Diversions aka Dandelion and Will. Acoustic but equally perhaps able to expand into a full band their dark story telling tales encompass mermaids and their siren calls, crows, and the desire to shrink people down and encase them within a ‘Glass Jar’. Their covers ranged from Nick Cave, and Rammestein in a different style but lacking none of the dynamics to a rousing finale of a Croatian folk song complete with flutes and hand drums that got faster and faster, and a rendition of the classic ‘Je Ne Regret a Rien’. Expect the unexpected. The Psychedelic Circus nights return on September 21st and we Penguins Go Pop will be playing at one of the nights

Musical Triangle before the end of the year. The future of B2 and The Brickmakers beyond January is uncertain and will be a great loss to the local live music scene should it not remain as a venue. We have lost many great SMALL VENUES in Norwich that put on original artists in the last few years with the Bicycle Shop and House cafe stopping concerts, Jurnets bar still uncertain whether it will be able to re-open, The Birdcage and Gonzo’s closing probably due to the pandemic, Cactus café yet to return to live music, and recently sadly the loss of Gringo’s run by the ever helpful and affable Andrew Skalli. On behalf of many local musicians and promoters thank you Andrew for all that you did for the local music scene. It leaves Voodoo Daddy’s as the sole remaining small venue in the city unless rumours of Gonzo’s re-opening are true, or you know otherwise. Lets hope that life, gigs and audiences will return to normal soon, but sadly as to whether the venues that we have lost will return is uncertain.
