Grapes Hill Community Gardens
While Summer has been quieter at Grapes Hill Community Garden, we have still been able to welcome volunteers, raised bed holders and run some summer workshops. Numbers may be restrictied but it has been an absolute joy to see so many people enjoying the garden. We also held a socially distanced Art in the Garden Day which went so well. To see so much nature inspired art from local artists was fantastic and we know that visitors loved it. The workshops went well from herbal tea making to yoga, songwriting to permaculture, they were another chance to enjoy nature in the city and learn new skills as well. Our popular Nature in the Garden Day was back in September when we welcomed Norfolk Wild Encounters with their Hawks and Owls, The Papillon Project, Acle Crafts and Hodmedods Hedgehogs to the event. The garden is full of Autumn from the changing colours in the trees, to the majestic structures of seedheads and as the raised beds begin to be cleared of annual vegetables there is still so much to see if you come to take a look around. The garden is open daily all year and you are welcome to take some herbs or fruit, we just ask that you also leave some for others as well. www.grapeshillcommunitygarden.org

Gardening & Climate Change Checking in from Oregon, USA. It’s been a rough week here! Before the wildfires erupted we were getting to that end of season burn out, so the first few days of being housebound weren’t so bad, kind of an unscheduled staycation. After a week of off the chart hazardous air quality, we are now down to a merely unhealthy rating. We got out to check on the garden yesterday for about a half hour which left us exhausted and nauseous. Everything is doing okay out there though, the heavy smoke has repressed temperatures so the soil has not dried out, everything has kind of slowed down but still good. We are in awe of nature! So many people have lost all connection to the natural world, but I am encouraged by the number of people who have embraced the concept of growing their own food during Covid. Having spenta week, and counting, in a state of virtual nuclear winter, I can tell you this...if we let our forests go up in flames humanity is in deep trouble! It is vital that we work to encourage others to establish a connection to nature and I believe that growing one’s own food is the gateway to understanding what humanity needs. If you can go outside and breathe fresh air, try to spend a moment in gratitude! Peace! Birgit Griem

Still Pisa beats Barnard Castle on the old eye test front even if the Tower looks like its leaning a bit. The foppy floppy blond one has apparently being pasta ing the time at the christening of little Wilfred! Does this qualify as a transgression of the rules that are oh so crystal clear. And it seems that just like World War One it won’t be over by Xmas after all, Easter possibly but more likely August Bank Holiday if you are lucky! So it‘s back in the trenches and get ready with the stockpiles of toilet rolls and bully beef (remember the 1966 Quarter Final) Meanwhile across the pond the other bouffant blonde is planning to keep the job by declaring himself the only one fit to govern apart from just about all the rest of the nation (that are still alive that is)…..pass the bleach someone. How very George Best!! I don’t think they would have lasted long in the Cruel Sea lifeboat with Jack Hawkins! Meanwhile in Hollywood the “Happy Couple” are getting their name in lights with a deal with Netflix which should help them on their way to financial independence (like all multi-millionaires) and give Me Again something else to drone on about whilst dodging the paparazzi (Ready for my pained expression close-up) with her ginger nut. Green House Trust Amory Lovins: Most U.S. nuclear power plants cost more to run than they earn. Globally, the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2019 documents the nuclear enterprise’s slow-motion commercial collapse—dying of an incurable attack of market forces. Yet in America, strong views are held across the political spectrum on whether nuclear power is essential or merely helpful in protecting the Earth’s climate—and both those views are wrong. In fact, building new reactors, or operating most existing ones, makes climate change worse compared with spending the same money on more-climate-effective ways to deliver the same energy services. Those who state as fact that rejecting (more precisely, declining to bail out) nuclear energy would make carbon reduction much harder are in good company, but are mistaken. If you haven’t heard this view before, it’s not because it wasn’t published in reputable venues over several decades, but rather because the nuclear industry, which holds the microphone, is eager that you not hear it. Many otherwise sensible analysts and journalists have not properly reported this issue. Few political leaders understand it either. But by the end of this article, I hope you will. For the details and documentation behind this summary, please see pp. 228–256 of the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2019. A supporting paper provides simple worked examples of how to compare the “climate-effectiveness” of different ways to decarbonize the electricity system. ass gatherings may be out of the question, but that hasn’t stopped UEA Live – previously the UEA Literary Festival - from launching its eclectic autumn 2020 event series online – featuring literary legends Lee Child, Ian McEwan, and Bernardine Evaristo. ‘True to our innovative, inclusive and progressive “do different” philosophy, the literary festival has been relaunched as UEA Live, with dynamic programming, fantastic speakers, and enhanced physical and virtual audience experiences,’ said UEA Director of Creative Writing Henry Sutton. ‘We want you to be a part of our future.’ This new chapter coincides with the CW50 celebrations, marking 50 years of the university’s renowned Creative Writing MA. This year’s impressive line-up of writers all have a connection to the course. What’s more, for the first time, this autumn, all UEA Live events will be online only and will be available to experience for free from the comfort of home. The festival runs from 7 October to 18 November.

Future plans for the city’s public spaces Retaining, refreshing and renewing the city centre and its public spaces is the subject of a new document, which brings together all the planned changes to streets, squares and public gardens over the next five years. The city centre public space plan, which has been approved by cabinet, sets out the improvements the council expects to see in the city centre as a result of projects carried out by developers, the city and county councils. Planned projects include enhancing squares and public gardens, improving traffic management and lowering car emissions, and creating new walking and cycling connections to promote liveability, connectivity and fairness – all key aspects of the 2040 City Vision. Some of the projects in the plan are already underway, such as reinstating the east side of Tombland as a public space and the riverside space at Duke Street being created by the Norwich University of the Arts, while others are awaiting funding. This document will play a key role in attracting investment for the projects and has already supported the submission of the ambitious Norwich Investment Plan, which aims to secure a £25.2m share of the government’s Town Fund scheme. Cllr Mike Stonard, cabinet member for sustainable and inclusive growth said: “The council’s long-standing commitment to promote sustainable transport and create quality public spaces is more important than ever as we seek to restore the local economy and attract people back into the city centre – key priorities in our Covid-19 Recovery plan. “By publishing this public space plan we hope to enthuse residents, visitors and funders about the positive future for the city – something which is very much needed in this difficult time.” 14

s some of you will know, when I started writing for Triangle I was giving my expert opinion on a number of wines that may, or may not, have been available in local retail outlets. What you won’t know is that I am also a qualified beer expert. I thought that, in a similar vein to my Wine Column, I would share my views on the beers I sampled there.

ctober half-term is usually a flurry of hands-on Norwich Science Festival activities at The Forum and around the city. This year, with the Festival cancelled due to the pandemic, the team behind it are bringing you an online mini programme of engaging family shows, virtual talks and activities you can do at home. Norwich Science Festival At Home takes place 24–28 October, and is brought to you by The Forum, with UEA and Norwich Research Park. All events are online and free, with the opportunity to give donations to help secure the future of the Festival. Natalie Bailey, Norwich Science Festival producer said: “Although we can’t bring you our award-winning hands-on Festival this year, we’re delighted to be working with our partners and patrons to bring you our #NorwichSciFestAtHome mini programme of online events.” “We’ll have family friendly shows from our patrons Prof Ben Garrod, Lizzie Daly and Mark Thompson, and Festival favourites such as The Little Story Telling Company with DNA Detectives. For adults, there’s an interactive science quiz, and even a talk on the psychology of serial killers.” “Our partners at UEA and Norwich Research Park will bring you a family friendly Lunchtime Lab every day, on topics as diverse as volcanos, weird animal behaviour, and plants and pests. Plus their panel events will explore the climate crisis, the relationship

between art and science, and showcase the vital work happening in Norwich and Norfolk around the COVID-19 pandemic.”
David Parfrey, Executive Chair, Norwich Research Park said: “This year we are proud to support Norwich Science Festival At Home. Science is in everything we touch, see or use in our daily lives and here in the city, at Norwich Research Park we are full of globally leading scientists working on the biggest challenges known to humankind today. We are totally committed to this city and its people and therefore we are of course keen to share through the programme some of the things we are doing and to talk with everyone about science.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly thrust science into the limelight and underlined its significance in tackling important challenges. However, we work to change lives today, but securing the future for generations to come, is of equal importance. The Norwich Science Festival At Home plays an inspirational part in encouraging the vital next generation in science.” Norwich Science Festival events are brought to you by The Forum, along with partners and organisations across Norwich, and are made possible through funding, sponsorship, and income generated through The Forum’s citycentre car park. Events and tickets will be announced on norwichsciencefestival.co.uk at the start of October.

The Voice Project Choir announce Arc of the Sky film premieres In March 2020, the choirs fell silent, just as Norwich’s multi award-winning Voice Project had planned to start rehearsing a new show. Arc of the Sky takes its inspiration from Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh and the landscape it sits in, the Blyth estuary and the nearby coastline. The 130 strong choir planned to present the work, exploring themes of flight, perspective, scale, solitude and connection, in the 15th century ‘Cathedral of the Marshes’, in July. Of course it couldn’t happen quite like that. Plans were quickly adapted to take the rehearsal process online, working with filmmaker Nathan Clarke and art director Sal Pittman to create a lasting record of the piece. The resulting 30-minute film will premiere at The Shoe Factory, St. Mary's Works, Norwich on 2, 3 and 4 October with 3 screenings each day. Each screening will be introduced by Voice Project CoDirectors Sian Croose and Jonathan Baker with the audience for each limited to 45 people to ensure safety and effective social distancing. During the online rehearsals choir members filmed and recorded themselves. The creative team then assembled the film as a choral chronicle of the spring and early summer of 2020. Arc of the Sky features music written by Jon Baker, Orlando Gough and Sian Croose, with texts by British and American poets including Emily Dickinson, Stephen Watts, Wendell Berry, Jane Draycott and George Szirtes. You can watch a short trailer for the film at www.voiceproject.co.uk where tickets can also be booked. As well as the film screening the dates will also feature a promenade video gallery featuring montages with artistic treatment by Sal Pittman. 20

ith most Commercial radio stations having virtually no local or regional content now and the BBC increasingly cutting back and centralising, the role and rise of community radio in the next decade will be an interesting one to watch. Most will have been hit hard by the pandemic sweeping the country, but many have managed to continue broadcasting if not completely new shows at least many of the day time Breakfast, Drive time and other shows of regional interest. I personally have been repeating my alternate week show Eclectic Selection (every other Sunday 6-8 pm Future radio) but hope to return in mid October after a long break, but many have carried on throughout the crisis. When you consider that the vast majority are volunteers it emphasises their dedication and as well as the sheer enjoyment that they gain from broadcasting a show many are as good as if not better than their national counterparts. During lockdown I discovered a range of specialist shows on Community (and online) radio stations across the country that I did not know about. This is an area in which community radio excels. I work with a lot of musicians and bands promoting their music, especially in the folk and acoustic fields and it has been worrying to see how many of the very good regional BBC folk shows for example have been suspended, their future’s uncertain, or some being allowed a 15-30 minute spot within another show not knowing if their show will return post pandemic. However should the incoming new heads of the corporation decide that the axe should fall on some or indeed all of them (I certainly hope not) there are a vast range of regional folk shows on Community radio

stations across the country of exceptionally high standards, broadcast by DJ’s with a real passion for what they are playing and knowledge that is potentially second to none in their regions. But that is not the only form of music that is well catered for by community radio. Most stations have a wide range of dance music shows late on Friday and Saturday nights ideal for those who are missing their weekend nights out, there are a vast array of great jazz and prog shows covering both new and old music from the genre’s, many a Metal, rock, or indie show with many of the specialist shows being broadcast by people who are musicians themselves. Indeed during the last 10-15 years many an artist will have received their first airplay on a Community radio station. Some of the more forward thinking stations broadcast the sort of thing by day that is even too weird for most stations night time schedules and so if you feel like hearing some Charlie Parker, Can, King Crimson, Sun Ra, Bootsy Collins, Public Image, Captain Beefheart, or Megadeath mid afternoon mid week check out the likes of Soundart radio, Resonance, Phonic Fm or some of the wonderfully weirdly named shows on Sine fm in Doncaster. They must be pumping something strange into their water system methinks. Like many organisations Community radio needs funds to survive. Many survive by being run by volunteers and on the income from advertising revenue and maybe grants from Ofcom, while others have some paid staff and have to seek other means of income as well to stay afloat. However the overriding thing about community radio is that it is mostly broadcast by people of all ages and backgrounds with
a love for what they do, what they play, a real genuine interest and that comes across on many a show. Yes there will be some who come into it as a stepping stone hoping to make a career out of it, but hopefully they will retain the community radio ethos. If you haven’t discovered Future radio here in Norwich, the station that I have been on now for 14 years since before it got its full licence, check it out on 107.8 fm www.futureradio. co.uk and DAB, as there are a vast range of shows to suit all sorts of tastes musically from Funk, soul, blues and jazz to local, Indie, rock, dance, electronica, eclectic and much more to Gardening, Business, regional issues, and a vegan show to name but a few. If you haven’t switched stations in some time, if the station you listen to at work or while driving is merely there for background noise, have been concerned about the centralising of local radio, your tastes are not quite what the bigger organisations cater for, or even if you are just fed up with what the TV is churning out check out community radio, and with some 300 stations across the UK there really is something on there for everyone, even if I have only come across one Goth show. Even then, it is appropriately on at midnight. With both viewing and listening figures wildly over-estimated, TV channels reaching new lows, and conventional radio centralised why not turn on your radio (or computer), tune in to something new, drop what you have become bored with, and maybe community (and online) radio can become the future of radio. Happy listening and discovering. RICHARD PENGUIN mail@richardpenguin.co.uk
