ick up your waste! or rather, don’t throw it out of the car window!! I travel from Norwich to Beccles every day and I am absolutely disgusted with the amount of litter that has been thrown out of cars along that stretch. There isn’t one piece of that road (on both sides) that isn’t strewed with litter. That’s 20 miles there and 20 mile back – 40 miles of litter!! The same sorry sight can be seen on every other main road out of Norwich. This isn’t just a local issue. I travelled to Nottingham at the weekend and all the roads there and back were just as bad.

The 2019 UEA Spring Literary Festival

he 2019 UEA Spring Literary Festival brings an eclectic mix of today’s best writers, thinkers and speakers to Norwich. We will hear from Tracey Thorn, one half of legendary pop duo Everything But The Girl, prominent political campaigner Gina Miller and two of the finest contemporary novelists, Tessa Hadley and Rachel Cusk. Joining them will be UEA alumni John Boyne, author of worldwide bestseller The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Man Booker Prize winner Marlon James, and Max Porter, author of the remarkable Grief Is The Thing With Feathers. The festival closes with Damian Barr, whose debut novel, You Will Be Safe Here, is set to be one of the discoveries of the year. Free entrance includes a cup of tea or coffee and cake with the chance to enjoy a chat with your neighbours and maybe make some new friends and acquaintances. Take a look at a photo display of past events in the Grapes Hill Community Garden. This is an opportunity for the community to share ideas and influence what happens in the community garden this year. This might include free events and workshops, entertainment, family activities, volunteering opportunities, gardening courses, choice of plants, etc. There is no obligation to get involved, but more participation from all age groups within the local community is very welcome and appreciated. RECIPE SPINACH AND RICOTTA GNOCCHI MALFATTI (4) Did you know gnocco in Italian means “stupid person” ! 250 g spinach 250 g ricotta cheese* 125 g plain flour - sieved 1 egg and 1 egg yolk 100 g Parmesan cheese - grated 1/4-teaspoon nutmeg - grated 1 clove garlic - crushed Seasoning

• Wilt the spinach down in a little water until just cooked. Squeeze out any excess water and finely chop. • Simply mix all the ingredients together and season to taste. • Roll with clean damp hands in to approx. 30 or so small balls - thumb nail size. (The Italians roll them in to oval shapes and press a floured fork in to the top of each one, indenting and flattening them slightly.) • Bring a pot of water to the boil with a pinch of salt. • Add the balls and simmer for approx. 3 minutes or until cooked - they will float to the top when ready. • Drain and serve tossed in a sauce. (7 – 8 balls per portion) An alternative Tip for rolling Gnocchi – Roll the dough in to a long thin sausage shape, (approx. 1 cm thick) on a lightly floured surface. Cut in to 2 cm pieces and either indent each piece with a fork and use as is or roll in to little balls in the palm of your hands. Now, a new exhibition in Norwich ‘Obsession, Art and Maturity’ will celebrate this trend for the rise of older women artists by showcasing the work of three leading, Norwich-based artists. Photographer Julia Cameron, painter Mary Mellor and sculptor Vanessa Pooley all have decades of experience, a notable back catalogue of work – and a lifelong creative

Art critics, curators and collectors are suddenly taking notice of older, women artists – many of whom have worked quietly under the radar for many years,” says sculptor Vanessa Pooley, a fellow of the British Society of Sculptors. Photographer Julia Cameron, 64, repeatedly visits the same sparse landscapes around the salt marshes and the South Beach of Great Yarmouth. The results are quiet, elegiac images of the Norfolk landscape. Painter Mary Mellor, 68, has returned to the theme of composition in paintings over many decades producing tens of works that revisit this. “People tell me I should move on, so I experiment with other subjects. But, I keep coming back to this same fascination with the geometry of the rectangle that has gripped me for nearly 20 years.” Sculptor Vanessa Pooley, 60, has been obsessed with the female figure since she began working as an artist 40 years ago. Se says, “As you mature as an artist you simplify and simplify yet again and you have to be older to realise that less is more. The bike is provided on loan to start with, and once the recipient has kept it in good order for a period of time, it is signed over for them to keep. We’re also running a second year of our successful Welcome Wheels project for refugees and asylum seekers, so the workshop is a hive of activity. To make these projects a success we need lots of old bicycles to refurbish. So if you are having a spring clean please drop any unwanted bikes with us, rather than take them to the tip. Or why not upgrade to a better cycle, and donate your old one? If you are buying a new bike from us we’re happy to make a discount for a donated bike in exchange. 019 is a significant year for the LGBT+ community. On 28th June 1969, a routine police raid on a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn in New York sparked days of riots that gave birth to the modern LGBT+ rights movement. The following year the first Pride March took place to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. This year there will be global celebrations marking 50 years of LGBT+ liberation and it’s going to be a key focus of Norwich Pride. We want to explore how life has changed for LGBT+ people in Norfolk over the last half-century and see how far we’ve come in reaching our mission to live in a city where everyone can feel safe and proud to be themselves. We began our research with a quick poll on social media to find out how comfortable people feel holding their same-sex partner’s hand on the streets of Norwich. Within 5 hours we’d had over 200 responses and over 50% of people said they worry about holding hands in public.

The Big Wigs at Talking Pictures TV brought the TV world to their senses and screened “The Ship That Died of Shame” no Jack Hawkins but a great performance in spiv like skulduggery from Dickie Attenborough! Oh yeah and then there was Christmas which came and went without too much fuss. Another Royal Wedding on the cards? The other Pantomime Princess seems to have taken up with what in a Jeeves & Wooster story would probably be described as a cad and a bounder and not one we would want round for tea let alone into the “Firm”. Which brings us to Me Again and her bump which seems to have taken on a life of it’s own and has grown incredibly large since the Sandringham Christmas photo shoot for the peasants! What’s the betting we have an early arrival with a full term size prince or princess then she can get on with falling out with the royal nanny!! Come back Pippa!! No World Cup this year but we still have the totally confusing Euro Nations whatever it is. Will we still be allowed to enter post Brexit? Given that Israel and Australia regularly qualify for Eurovision it should be ok. Who knows Wayne “mines a pint” Rooney may still be in contention for a place with Gareth’s lads. Did Donald “South of the Border” Trump get any Lego for Xmas to play at building his wall? If so did he send the bill to Mexico City? Or even Moscow? The truth is out there ……. somewhere That’s enough!!

Featuring star objects from the British Museum and Yorkshire Museum, Viking: Rediscover the Legend will offer a fresh perspective on how Vikings shaped many aspects of life in Britain.

The exhibition will include the Anglo-Saxon York Helmet, the most outstanding example of its type to survive, as well as the most significant Viking treasure ever found in the UK – the Vale of York, Cuerdale and Bedale Viking Hoards. These finds will be shown alongside highlights from Norwich Castle’s own extensive collections, including items on display for the first time, and will be interpreted in new ways which challenge our perceptions of what it means to be Viking.
Items from the Norwich Castle collections going on display for the first in this exhibition include a unique high-status gold lozenge brooch from Attleborough, the Hingham Hoard of four silver brooches and 23 silver pennies of King Edmund, and two silver pennies of King Æthelred, a mysterious East Anglian ruler known only from this coinage. In total 43 new and previously unseen items from the Norwich Castle collections will be included in the exhibition providing a fascinating local perspective on this national story.

The world’s first female time travelling doctor coming to Norwich
W
e all write notes to our future selves- remember gym kit, cancel free trial, call mum, but what happens if the future starts writing back? Doctor Rosy Carrick has created her show Passionate Machine to help us find out – and she’s bringing it to Norwich Arts Centre on 27 March as part of a national tour. Pipping Jodie Whittaker to the post as the world’s first female time travelling doctor, Rosy debuted this funny, poignant, sad, and at points shocking, show at the 2018 Brighton Fringe, where it won the coveted Best New Play Award, and the Edinburgh Festival, where it walked away with the Infallible Award for Theatrical Excellence. Dr Carrick has been charged with the task of building a time machine in order to rescue her future self who is stranded 100 years in the past. Thus begins an exhilarating, high-octane mission of science, sci-fi and serious attention to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rosy weighs up the glory of being a time travelling superstar against the fear that every decision she makes might take her into a parallel timeline and away from her predestined path. Local History Matters IN MEDIAEVAL NORWICH MARKET PLACE, A CROSS MARKED THE SPOT!
W
e know we have a city that is brimming with amazing buildings of great historical merit – not to mention national importance. Thank goodness this is still the case, and we should be grateful for The Norwich Society who does so much to safeguard the public buildings of value and also the hidden gems tucked away down alleyways in our Fine City. However, for this edition of Triangle I am going to describe what was once a very important feature of Norwich, which sadly is not there to be enjoyed in this 21st century. From ca. 1501/02 until ca. 1732 a very fine and imposing cross stood on Norwich market place. It was situated within the market perimeter edging onto today’s Gentleman’s Walk and roughly speaking opposite where we now have Davey Place. In its day it was a very striking local feature standing probably seventy feet high from the pavement level to the tip of the cross. As you will see from the picture it was by no means just a cross, but rather a largish structure standing on an octagonal base some thirty feet across, as is depicted in the illustration. It is believed that it was the most magnificent building of its type outside London. There are records of Thomas Gooding, a local stonemason, repairing parts of the structure after winter frost damage in the late 16th century. 24
It would seem that the cross building originally contained a chapel for religious observations but, over time, this function was withdrawn and it became a very useful storage facility. The protective roof that surrounded the building became a haunt for vagrants, but who could blame them for taking advantage of some shelter? In 2005, when the market area was undergoing a serious revamp a team of local archaeologists undertook a survey dig on the site and actually found the octagonal base of the cross. Sad to say that the cross, being thought of as the centre of the city in medieval times and a valuable focus point for the community, meant that it was also used as the site for dispensing so-called justice. Typical of this was the despatching here of the souls of those apprehended during Kett’s Rebellion in Norwich in 1549. It’s good to know that the excavated base of the cross has been preserved beneath the current paving and that its ‘footprint’ has been marked on the surface in red outline between trading Rows E and F. What a shame that it could not have been more imaginatively conserved as a feature we could still see and enjoy today - but I hear someone saying that the market stalls are more important!

Luke Wright, Poet Laureate celebrates 20 years of verse
T
his year marks the 20th anniversary of Luke Wright’s first ever gig, coincidentally the year a new Poet Laureate is to be announced. So what better year for the region’s favourite poet to throw his hat in the ring in a bid for British poetry’s top job? Former UEA student Luke first performed poetry at an open spot at Colchester Arts Centre in early 1999, with his first paid gig following few months later at Norwich Arts Centre. Since then he has become one the UK’s best known and most prolific poets. He has won numerous awards and published a series of acclaimed books, inspiring a generation of young poets,. His verse documentaries on Channel 4 have been enjoyed by millions and his poems can often be heard on BBC Radios 3 & 4. He curates the spoken word line-ups at Port Eliot Festival, Festival Number 6 and The Edinburgh International Book Festival. His all new show Luke Wright, Poet Laureate is undertaking an extensive 20th Anniversary tour of Britain this year and comes to

There’s a buzz about Tinnitus Awareness Week
I
magine wearing a pair of headphones which are playing ringing, whooshing, humming or buzzing sounds. Imagine not being able to take those headphones off all day and all night for 365 days a year. This is the reality for the 10% of the population who suffer from persistent tinnitus. Tinnitus is a very common condition reported in all age groups; about 30% of people will experience tinnitus at some point in their lives. It’s extremely difficult treat because the sound isn’t usually caused by something physical which can be cured, for this reason tinnitus treatment focuses on relief of the symptoms rather than treatment of the cause. As research of a cure for tinnitus is ongoing, those suffering from the condition should keep themselves informed of the many treatment options available to find what works for them. Treatment options including listening to music and practising mindfulness, relaxing the mind and body to tune out the sounds you are hearing. Local, family-run hearing company The Hearing Care Centre which has 26 centres across East Anglia, has organised a Tinnitus & Hearing Care Show, offering a series of interesting presentations and an exhibition designed to increase public understanding 28
of tinnitus and hearing loss, as well as discuss possible ways to ease the symptoms of tinnitus. The event is free to attend and will take place on Thursday 7th February 2019 (9am-1pm) at Fynn Valley Terrace, just outside of Ipswich. “In a large number of cases tinnitus sufferers also have a hearing loss, which worsens their symptoms.” Karen Finch, Senior Audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre explained. “Once a patient’s general hearing levels are improved, every day sounds they hadn’t been able to hear because of the noises in their ears are clearly audible, and they in turn ease the experience of tinnitus.” Headlining the event will be one of the UK’s leading experts on tinnitus Professor David Baguley of Nottingham University. David Stockdale, Chief Executive of the British Tinnitus Association and The Hearing Care Centre’s senior audiologist Karen Finch will also be speaking at the event. Guests will also have the opportunity to ask the experts any questions they may have at regular Q&A intervals between each talk. 018 ended with a series of magnificent concerts, especially from Mercury Rev, The Sweetbeats and The Trials of Cato. ‘The Rev’ celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release of the classic ‘Deserter Songs’ album with a sold out ‘Whisper and Strum’ live version of the album at the Arts centre. Stripped down renditions of songs from one of the most atmospheric and enchanting albums of the 90s retained that dream like sound but with added stories of where and how they were written beguiling the packed auditorium. Led by Jonathan and Grasshopper sans full band, but just as effective, it built up towards its 2 most memorable moments in the hook laden ‘Goddess on a Hiway’ and the epic and hauntingly beautiful ‘Holes’ with neither lacking the spirit of the original recordings, and indeed added to by the back stories. This was, quite possibly, my favourite concert of 2018. Just magical. A few nights before, at the same venue, The Sweetbeats played their annual concert there and unveiled their superb and upbeat new album ‘Girl Overboard’. Largely ska, reggae and bluebeat based there are sojourns into other styles, notably on ‘Motown Never Sleeps’, and driven by 60s organ sounds, soul section style brass, solid guitar and rhythm section underpinning harmonious vocals the upbeat nature of the night propelled a rapturous audience to their feet in appreciation. If anything, 15 years in, this is one local band who are getting better and better. A great gig. Just before Xmas

One’s to watch in 2019 on the folk circuit The Trials of Cato launched their debut album with a sold out gig at the Portland Arms in Cambridge. Already tipped for big things, having sold 2,000 copies in the first month of release they took to the stage looking like 3 musical musketeers mixing self penned songs with traditional tunes taking in Irish jigs to Eastern scales with a dexterity and skill in their playing more often seen in one twice their age. From tales of missing a loved one (‘My love is in Germany’), through songs of rebellion (‘Tom Paines bones’), to a true story of a cross dressing folk singer (‘Gloria’) there is a mix of subject matter too. Judging by the reaction that they received, the cross section of age ranges in the audience, their level of musical ability, strong set of material, and almost unified image all of the hype it seems in this case may well be justified. Definitely one’s to watch out for. At a different stage of life and in a different style Soft Machine, containing a guitarist, bassist and drummer (Etheridge, Babbington and Marshall) from a 70s line up, and youngster, in comparison, Theo Travis, on woodwind and keyboards they mainly drew upon their jazz rock past most notably ‘Tales of Taliesin’ from the ‘Softs’ album with the fluent rhythm section complementing Etheridge’s sustained and often yearning guitar, and Travis’s melodic keyboard and sax lines. This, along with the delving into compositions of former band leader Mike Ratledge, is the style of Soft Machine that I most enjoy, and while the more challenging experimental
pieces showcase their abilities some left me unmoved or irked. Like the curates egg, good in parts. Finally still playing after all these years and fronted by the still angry Kurt Brandon Theatre of Hate’s echo laden, pulsating rhythm, rockabilly guitar drenched set at the Waterfront studio including the classics ‘Westworld’ + ‘Legion’ satisfied many a one time punk, and proved, like the even older Softs that there is still life in the oldies yet.
