can’t believe it’s almost Christmas. It seems that it started so long ago in the shops and supermarkets that I lost interest in the date and now it has crept up on me and I’ll soon start running around like a headless chicken unable to find anyone an appropriate present. My son, at university, will be back and eating us out of house and home. It’s a small price to pay and I’m looking forward to hearing the front door crash open again at 4am after he’s been for a night out with his mates. He reminds me that according to student law, no beer in a fridge or biscuit in a tin is safe. It’s a jungle out there.

and take this chance to thank all our readers, contributors and advertisers for all your help and support in 2017. Our magazine has again made a wonderful service in kind donation of over £52,000 this year to local charities through advertising, listings, design services and the really good will of all the staff at Anglia Print Ltd. I hope that you have all been very, very good children this year and you have a great Christmas and New Year. Anglia Print Ltd is a Carbon Neutral company and dedicated to printing with the environment in mind.

Since making their home at The Oak, Lost in Translation have rapidly become established as one of the country’s leading and best-loved contemporary circus companies for their trademark warm humour combined with heart-stoppingly virtuosic skilful aerial and floor acrobatics. The company has toured widely throughout the UK and Europe and enjoyed repeat audience and critical success at the Edinburgh Festival. The professionals in the A Christmas Circus Carol will include Co-Director Massimiliano Rossetti and core artist Roisin Morris who are the Guinness World Record holders for most somersaults on a Korean Cradle in one minute. www. lostintranslationcircus.com The Friday performance will see performances from The Oak’s growing community of adult students followed by our professional LiT Circus tutors. The two shops share many of the same artists and designer/makers, and offer customers a city and a coastal shopping option. It is a wonderful shop to find unusual and perfect gifts or a treat for yourself. Come in and be inspired!

STRANGERS’ HALL Wednesdays 6, 13 & 20 & Sundays 3, 10 & 17 December, 10am - 3.30pm FESTIVE FUN AT STRANGERS’ HALL Enjoy the museum at its festive best, decked out in Christmas finery, and enjoy some seasonal crafts to take home. Wednesdays 13 & 20 December, 5.30, 6.30 & 7.30pm

Dear Santa

AFTER HOURS CHRISTMAS SPECIALS GREAT FOR GROUPS! Celebrate in style - take a seasonal tour with a costumed guide around this magnificent medieval building. Explore unusual objects from the collections and finish the evening with a glass of punch and a mince pie treat. Booking essential: Max 15, Age 14+.

Dear Santa, I’ve been a good girl all year (I know, boring right?!) so please could you bring me all the things on my Christmas list? They don’t cost anything but at the same time they are precious beyond measure:

1. A noisy gang of sparrows for the hedge in my front garden. The ones that used to live there just vanished. I miss their excited chatter. 2. Scores of turtle doves to repopulate the lanes and fields of Norfolk - I can’t remember the last time I heard a gentleman turtle dove purring to his partner. I almost can’t recall that dreamy sound. 3. Flocks of striking lapwing to once again fill the air above open fields and farmland. What a thrilling sight they used to be - not that long ago.

“There’s a lot going on in this smart deli-kitchen.” the Guardian

“This is produce that you can’t buy in the supermarkets and it really shows.” Deli of the month, Food and Travel Magazine

4. Battalions of summer visitors to fill our skies with aerial wonder; swifts, house martins and swallows. As a special present, could I have a house martin colony make nests in my roof? I didn’t see one of these perfect mud domes last year. 5. Finally, the trickiest present of all; please bring me determination and unswerving focus. Without these, I’ll miss opportunities to do my bit for nature. Whether it’s in my garden, wider community or nationally there are going to be so many ways I can speak up for wildlife in 2018, but only if I stay ‘awake’. Thank you Santa. I know you won’t let me down.

AMARETTO DELICATESSEN IN NORWICH Amaretto Delicatessen in Norwich has been praised for its quality food and authenticity at the English Italian Awards. Located on St Georges Street, the deli beat out competition from hundreds of other businesses to be shortlisted in the Best Deli/Cafe and Best Team categories. Held on October 15, the glitzy event saw Amaretto take runner-up for Best Deli/ Cafe. Originally from Empoli in Tuscany, owner Fabrizio Fiaschi has been living in Norwich for 15 years with his wife and daughter. He opened Amaretto eight years ago. Mr Fiaschi said: “Amaretto Delicatessen is delighted to have won runner-up for this national award. “I’d like to thank my fantastic staff who work so hard, all the customers who voted for us to get us to the finals in the first place, as well as the organisers and judges of the English Italian awards. We feel truly honoured.” Congratulations from all the team at Anglia Print Ltd

Loddon WEA Talks – Spring 2018 In her series of talks this Autumn about transport in East Anglia from the middle ages up to the 20th century, Mary Fewster gave us a most interesting picture of the development of the region’s roads, railways, rivers and ports, the different means of transport and their cost, and the organisation and legal framework which ensured their reliable functioning.

Dinner Dating in Norfolk and Suffolk Choosing a partner is the most important and life changing decision of your life! Technology stops face to face meetings, especially for the young. If you’re not meeting 100s of people in your life in front of you, how can you judge when someone who would suit you, it’s a gut instinct. There are people out there who would make a wonderful partner for life, but you need the social practice and instinct to know them! A man, 20, said “I’ve been gaming all my teens and now realise I need more practice socialising”. After a year, I now have 300 people, 20s,30s,40s,50s, and 60s, the 20/30s have esp. given me wonderful feedback. I create the opportunity to meet 7/8 men or women who are single, your age and local for 15/20 mins over seven small courses of food in a restaurants in Norwich. The women move each course. I hold all the personal info, you will be secure and private, all using the same car park. I keep an eye on everyone during the evening, for £15 per person per event, plus food for £25 which includes a drink. I ask for feedback, after the event, if two people say they want to connect, I put them in touch. If you want to continue, I will ask you to register for the year for £20, and I also arrange private one to one meetings. Local History Matters WHO INVENTED THE PHRASE ‘LANDSCAPE GARDENER?’ WELL, IT WAS A NATIONALLY FAMOUS MAN WHO IS BURIED IN NORFOLK.

I

n the bustling village of Aylsham, Norfolk, and somewhat discretely tucked away off the main market square is the very fine church of St. Michael and All Angels. There is much to admire inside the building but, on this occasion, it is not necessary to venture within as the impressive memorial we seek is affixed to the south front of the building, as depicted above. According to his memorial Humphry Repton hails from Harestreet, Essex, the son of a tax collector, who, in 1762 started a transport business in Norwich, where young Humphry went to the Grammar School until he was twelve, when he was sent to the continent to learn Dutch. In 1773 he married Mary Clarke and dabbled in the textile trade – without much success. By 1778 he was living near Aylsham sustained by the small legacy left by his parents. He tried his hand at being a journalist, a playwright, a private secretary and an artist. Sadly none of these careers worked out but his interest in art was to be pivotal later. With his inheritance dwindling Humphry moved to Essex, where things start to improve. A lifelong friend had encouraged him to study botany and gardening so, together with his skill as an artist, he set himself up in business as a ‘landscape gardener.’ In 1783 the death occurred of ‘Capability’ Brown, who was arguably the greatest of all garden designers. Into the space left by Brown stepped Repton,

whose very first paid contract was to design Catton Park, north of Norwich, in 1788. From a humble start Repton attracted considerable work from the wealthy. He develops the gardens and landscapes at Stoneleigh Abbey, Blaise Castle and Woburn Abbey, to name but a few. All true entrepreneurs have something special that separates them from the main bunch, and Repton’s particular gift was being able to produce beautiful watercolours involving a series of overlays in which he could ‘visualise’ before and after images for his clients’ delight. In this respect his work was almost unique at the time. His working sketches were mostly created in a series of ‘Red Books’ so called for the colour of their bindings. Thus Repton could act as a visual advisor and pick up a fee, even if he didn’t procure the main garden commission. Repton developed ‘themed’ gardens where he created special effects e.g. – Chinese gardens and flower gardens with trellis work. In 1811 Repton sustained a serious injury in a carriage accident and thereafter was mostly confined to a wheelchair. Humphry Repton died on 24th March 1818 aged sixty-five and was laid to rest on the south side of St. Michael’s Church, Aylsham, where you cannot miss his memorial with its quaint inscription.

Another series of ten 1½ hour talks, this time on ‘Some Remarkable Norfolk Personalities’, will be starting on Monday 8th January 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Jubilee Hall Clubroom, Loddon. The speaker this time will be Mr. Nigel Wimhurst, now retired, but formerly a teacher of political and social history, politics and political theory to A-level and degreelevel students. The personalities to be covered will, of course, include Nelson; the others will be Herbert de Losinga, Margaret Paston, Robert Kett, Amelia Opie, Elizabeth Fry, Harriet Martineau, J.J. Colman and Dorothy Jewson. The talks will be largely informal, with time for questions and discussion. The fee for the complete course will be £54, but if you are undecided, come to the first talk free of charge and pay only if you decide to continue. On-line enrolment is possible by going to enrolonline.wea. org.uk; you may also enrol at the Jubilee Hall both before and after the first talk. No previous knowledge of the subject is required; there are no exams to take; the atmosphere is friendly…. and there is plenty of parking space at the Jubilee Hall. Everyone is welcome. If you need any more information, phone (01508) 521036 or 558453.

Making pension decisions: a key time for advice

M

or some time now, pension decisions have become complicated and those approaching retirement have a bewildering array of choices. Phil Beck looks at why it’s important to get advice. Once upon a time it used to be so easy to decide what to do with the pension pot you’d built up over your working life: you simply handed over your fund to a pension provider to buy an income for the rest of your life. However, it’s no longer that simple. Pension flexibility was introduced in April 2015 and gave people the option to manage their retirement finances by withdrawing lump sums or income straight from the pot as needed. Known as drawdown, this solution works for a wide range of cases. However, there are situations where going into drawdown isn’t the best way to go. Some pension schemes have guaranteed

benefits, for example, that might be lost if transferred to a different arrangement. This is a critical time for your planning: how do you ensure that your money can provide for the rest of your life, whilst factoring in any other spending that you would like to make? We believe that independent financial advice for pensions is critical, particularly as you approach retirement. The Government has recognised the importance of taking retirement advice and now allows pension savers to draw up to £1,500 from their pension pot to pay for regulated advice. Under the new rules, a maximum of £500 can be drawn from your fund to pay for advice at a time, on up to three occasions. It can only be used once in any tax year but, importantly, can be used at any age. The Pensions Advice Allowance is available to those with defined contribution pension

However, not every pension company is willing to let their pension savers use their funds in this way: it’s not mandatory so it’s important to check first. The allowance isn’t available to anyone who is a member of a defined benefits scheme, where future retirement benefits are based on salary and length of service. Would you like to travel in light?

Inanna’s Magical Gifts, Norwich

The Voice Project Choir’s new piece explores three very different locations in the same medieval Norwich Street. In one of the darkest parts of the year, when the post-festive blues can really set in, The Voice Project Choir offer to take you on an uplifting multi venue journey that will inspire with the promise of spring to come. The 150 voices of the choir, plus soloists and guest musicians will perform their new piece, Travels in Light, the final part of a trilogy of pieces about sleep, dreaming and waking and the bits in between on 20 January. There will be three separate performances at 5pm; 7pm and 9pm. The show is a multi-venue secular performance piece that will be staged in the three very different churches on Norwich’s medieval Prince’s Street - St George’s Tombland, St Peter Hungate and the United Reformed Church with the choir leading the audience between them. Voice Project co-director Jon said explained ‘Each of these buildings has its own sound and atmospheric qualities, brilliant for a choral piece as these buildings were literally made for singing in.’ Set up in 2008 the Voice Project one of the best known community choirs in East Anglia and beyond, having performed at international festivals in mainland Europe, appeared on prime time TV and had a concert broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Their show The Arms of Sleep has been commissioned for the 2018 Brighton International Festival. www.voiceproject.co.uk 26

T

he turning of the solar cycle from days that are shortening to days that are lengthening again is called the Winter Solstice, and is marked across the northern hemisphere. For those who follow the calendar of the earth it’s a time of celebration and an acknowledgement that although we are still in Midwinter’s depths, the sun will be rising a little higher each day from now on, and Spring will come. Also known as ‘Modranect’ - the ‘Night of the Mother’ - the symbol of the Sun being ‘reborn’ ties in with ancient honourings of the birth of a sacred daughter Sun or a son Sun, depending on the tradition. The Hindu Great Mother was the sun goddess Aditi, the tantric Goddess Marici was also the Japanese Goddess Amaterasu, and both were rooted in the symbolism of her being clothed in the sun itself. Among the ancient Arabs, the sun was a Goddess, Atthar, a ‘glowing torch’, and in Celtic tradition she was Sulis, a word meaning both ‘eye’ and ‘sun’. Norwegians called her Sol, Germans knew her as Sunna, and in Scandinavia she was the ‘glory of elves’, the Goddess who would give birth to the bright sun of the next creation after doomsday. And at Silbury/Sulisbury/Solsbury Hill, the megalithic Hill of the Sun, she births returning life to the land. The glowing, radiant beauty of Saule,

Sol, Sunna and Sulis - variants on the name of the Ancient Sun Goddess of northern lands may be celebrated with candles, incense, good foods and dancing! She is the Daughter of the Sun, who is Herself the bringer of Life and Light, who causes the Earth to be fertile and bring forth leaves, flowers, fruits and all good things! Inanna’s Magical Gifts offers a selection of beautiful and handcrafted gifts to honour your own new beginning, and to spark the flame of your own creativity and inspiration which will be birthed over Winter Solstice and into the new sun cycle … Alongside greetings cards, candles, calendars and chanukiah candleholders for the Jewish Festival of Lights - Chanukah - and cards for the Winter Season suitable for all faiths and paths, there are cards for Chinese New Year coming in February and many other seasonal celebrations and sacred festivities are also included in our stock. As Inanna’s moves into its 30th year, we welcome customers old and new to our little space in Norwich, and look forward to what 2018 will bring! With good wishes to all for the Solstice and onwards! ~ Naomi x

INNER SPACE There have been some changes at Inner Space recently and not just the colour of the front wall. Christine Way who set up Inner Space back in 2002 has retired and passed the business onto Kit Adam who has worked here as a therapist since the beginning. Inner Space was set up to provide a tranquil space for teaching and practicing complementary therapies and well being and this certainly has not changed.

City gallery set to return to the traditional A city gallery is set to mark the festive season with a return to the traditional. The Fairhurst Gallery in Norwich will host an exhibition by two young artists, both renowned for their classical work. The Fall of Light will include paintings and drawings by London-based artists Olivia Crane and Georgina Stanley. Alongside the exhibition the Fairhurst Gallery will be launching their new Gallery Shop, which will stock a range of special editions made by emerging and internationally established artists and designers. Nina Fowler, of the Fairhurst Gallery, said: “We have decided to end the year with a return to the traditional. Georgina and Olivia represent the art of academic painting and drawing. Having mastered their techniques under the guidance of esteemed tutors in Florence, we are proud to showcase their skills.” The exhibition is on at The Fairhurst Gallery from December 1 through to December 23, 2017. The gallery, on Bedford Street, is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm with additional viewings available by appointment. www.fairhurstgallery.co.uk 30

t was a busy autumn for our small group of volunteers – do let us know if you might be interested in getting involved in 2017 so that we can continue to put on such a wide range of events and workshops as well as keeping the garden maintained for all to enjoy! Our ‘Celebration of International Culture in Norwich’ event on the 15th October was part of our lottery-funded outreach to migrant communities in Norwich, organised in collaboration with Roshan Dykes of New Routes. The autumn weather was sublime, and the event was a great success with over 200 attending from all parts of the globe. With a full programme of music, entertainment from around the world, storytelling and lots of exciting stalls including the Missing Kind, The Feed, Malaysian Food, African Crafts and Henna Tattoos. The garden group served up teas and coffees and put on a language taster stall which was very popular. A key attraction was the opportunity to sow some wildflower seed balls donated by Seedball a social enterprise. We hope that all participants return in the spring to see the results. The afternoon was hugely enjoyable and seeing our diverse community all coming together

to support each other and enjoy the garden was such a positive experience for everyone. Thanks to all who got involved in the preparation and on the day! There are plenty of colourful photos on our Facebook page posted by attendees and our very own talented photographer Jo Rice. See Photo above. Our family Halloween event was also well attended and enjoyed by all participants. Due to illness and changing circumstances, we are short of proactive committee members to help the community garden group meet its aims and charitable status mission to serve the different needs of the people of Norwich. We have a list of possible activities new committee members could take on and are open to suggestions dependent on applicants skills and experience. Please email us for more information if you are interested: contact@ grapeshillcommunitygarden.org and take a look at our website or Facebook page to get a sense of the full range of events and activities the group undertakes. All committee members are volunteers.

How good is your mental health? Psychotherapist Shane Lutkin looks at the growing problem of psychological tension Today’s busy, ever changing world is a breeding ground for psychological tension. Most people know someone who has been troubled in this way or they suffer themselves. Some interesting facts: • Every week, one in six adults experiences signs of a common mental health difficulty such as anxiety or low mood. • Both men and women between the ages of 55 and 64 have a noticeable increase in common mental health complications. • Women aged between 16 and 24 are almost three times as likely (at 26%) to experience psychological tensions as their male contemporaries (9%). • Young men are likely to commit suicide without talking to others… three times as many men take their own lives. • It takes the average person with psychological issues ten years to seek help. Around a third of all people with a mental health problem have sought no professional help at all. My advice is to be brave and talk to a qualified counsellor/psychotherapist. People can change and the sooner the change starts the better. Shane Lutkin has a Master’s degree in Psychotherapy. Contact shane@emotionalskills.uk. Visit www.emotionalskills.uk 34

ALL HALLOWS

Monty Shaft’s Did You Know … … that this is the time that everyone makes their ‘Best of the Year’ lists … … and who am I to break with tradition, so here are a few of mine. Best Norwich City goal of the year Has to be Johnny Howson’s goal against Nottingham Forest, although either of David Stockdale’s two against Brighton run it close. Best gig of the year The Flaming Lips at the UEA – to be fair, quite possibly the best gig of any year, even if it had stopped after the first song. Believe me, you had to be there. All I’ll say is a unicorn almost ran over my foot! Best month of the year July again! Come on you other months, you’re just not trying. Best film of the year Sadly, due to a number of bizarre houseworking injuries (honestly), I’ve not seen many new films this year – it’s the cinema seats - but the best of those I have seen are the extraordinary and very funny “Toni Erdmann”, the less extraordinary, but still funny “The Big Sick” and the utterly wonderful and quite short, so you should all see it, “My life as a courgette”. (Or as someone once said, “Best film of the year? I think I’d have to say cling.”) Best glass of the year Frosted, obviously.

YOGA! TO SECURE CONTACT US

Look him up. Although, personally, I’d go for Duncan Goodhew every time. Best album (do we still call them that?) of the year Strangely, in a year when I think there have been some fantastic songs recorded by new and established artists, there haven’t really been any albums that have kept me hooked all the way through. Those that have come closest are the ones by St Vincent, Wire, Girl Ray, Chastity Belt and The Granite Shore. Truth be told I’m just waiting for the Penguins Go Pop album to drop! Best Best of the year Still George, no-one else comes close.

Andrea Ledstrom is apparently alive and kicking and probably living with Mr D’arcy at Pemberley! Several own goals have been scored by royalty of late, Prince Andrew telling the young folk that he didn’t go to university but became an apprentice helicopter pilot with the Royal Navy which I am sure is a career path open to all, meanwhile what will be first? Planet X finally turning up, Royal Baby or Megan (everybody’s favourite goldigger) Markle’s engagement to our Harry? Clearly the royals have been busy saving up offshore.. well you would with a wedding to pay for and another mouth to feed no doubt Wills is contemplating his speech about overpopulation as he shines the silver christening spoon. Across the Atlantic we don’t have a gun problem despite two mass shootings in almost as many weeks. Donald “where’s the button” Trump was very reassuring telling us it could happen anywhere and the Texas attorney general following this up by advising church congregations to go fully armed for their services, really is a case of “Praise the Lord and pass the Ammunition!” We can only hope our minds will be distracted from all this with a Jack Hawkins season over Christmas!!

Use a 20 - 22 cm loose bottom cake tin - greased 250 g plain chocolate min 70% cocoa 3 large eggs 200 g dark brown sugar 100 ml vegetable oil 100 g self -raising flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 50 g ground almonds 1 teaspoon vanilla essence or 1/2 extract 250 g raw fresh beetroot – peeled and grated OPTIONAL FROSTING 150 g chocolate 100g icing sugar 100 g crème fraiche Preheat the oven gas 4 / 180c. Melt the chocolate in a bain marie (in a bowl over a pan of simmering water) – set aside. Meanwhile squeeze any excess juice from the beetroot (discard the juice) – set aside. In a large bowl whisk the eggs, sugar and oil until smooth and creamy. Then fold in the flour, baking powder, bicarb, almonds and vanilla. Stir the beetroot in to the melted chocolate, spoon in to the cake batter and stir until just mixed. Pour in to a greased tin. Bake on the middle shelf for 45 – 50 minutes or until cooked in the middle. HOW TO MAKE THE FROSTING Cool the cake. Melt the chocolate in a bain marie. Beat in the icing sugar followed by the cream. Spread all over the top for extra loveliness. I like mine with a touch of vanilla and a very fine grating of lemon zest. Recipe by Zena Leech-Calton © www.lovenorwichfood.co.uk

Musical Triangle Something weird happened recently as I lost my love of music. As a result I am taking a break from broadcasting my radio show until January and am repeating some favourite old shows, we are taking a break from live gigs in the penguins, and while my eclectic nights in October and November were absolutely packed out, and enjoyable I can only hope that I get through this in 2018 otherwise I may have to change this column to Bird Watching With The Penguin, The Antiques Column, or Postcard Corner. I went to very few gigs except for the enjoyable Dan Whitehouse and Jess Morgan gig at the arts centre, and occasional music house nights on Friday at Jurnets. https://www.facebook. com/JurnetsBarNorwich/ I also feel that it might be of more use in 2018 if I preview and list some of my forthcoming concert highlights more than reviewing, so here we are.
