Secret Surf Society By Liz Clark

During the winter months, I receive ongoing emails advising me where whales have been spotted along the coast – ‘mother and calf frolicking off Lorne Pier’, ‘humpback sighted 250 metres off shore, Apollo Bay’. I know where these places are. But some emails tell me they have been glimpsed at Wongarra, East Beach, Reedy Creek, Sugarloaf or Sheoak, and I ask myself ‘should I go out and have a look?’ but am unsure whether I would find them at my doorstep … or in Portland or Torquay or Warrnambool. These names aren’t readily available on maps, so I decided to make my own Community Houses are for Everyone

map and clarify exactly where some of these lesser-known beaches are located. I decided the best people to ask would surely be the local surfers. I approached a number of them and was bemused by a common response ‘don’t tell everyone where the good spots are. They’ll all want to join us’.
