It was a gloomy early morning in Anglesea. Rain had fallen heavily overnight and threatened to do so again.

Highlights

The crowd that gathered was not deterred. They were here for a far stronger purpose than keeping dry.

Or warm.

Surf Coast Art Space

The quietness of the children emphasised the importance of why people had gathered.

It was 25th April, and Anglesea RSL members gathered to remember and to Community Houses are for Everyone

honour those who have served and those who have died during worldwide conflicts.

Moss Darby, a 93-year-old veteran of World War 2 took the salute. Among the crowd was our local TV star 103year-old Tom Randall (see inset on next page) and his fellow members of the Anglesea RSL.

Plastic Bag-Free Anglesea & Aireys Inlet We are lucky to live in a beautiful part of the world and the locals are trying to keep it that way by not using plastic bags when they go shopping.

Plastic pollution is a serious issue for the one million sea birds, whales, seals, dolphins and sea turtles that die from plastic debris.

It is estimated that about nine million ton of plastic is dumped into the world’s oceans every year.

That’s enough plastic to rise 23 miles in the air. Based on analysis of published studies since the early 1960s, CSIRO researchers found that plastic is increasingly common in seabirds’ stomachs.

In 1960, plastic was found in the stomach of less than five per cent of individual seabirds, rising to 80 per cent by 2010.

The researchers predict that plastic ingestion will affect 99 per cent of the world’s seabird species by 2050, based on current trends.

Let’s protect the environment, our community and wildlife by continuing to use re-usable bags.

It is operated through representatives of the Anglesea and Aireys Inlet churches, who share responsibility for the collection and distribution of fortnightly parcels of basic food items. Tom Randall Tom Randall is our longest living member and probably one of the oldest members in Australia. Tom gave away golf in Anglesea in 2006 and lawn bowls in 2010. A special character and a special man.

Phyllis Lycett Phyllis Lycett, along with husband Harry (dec.), has been a long serving stalwart of the club having worked at all activities in running the club from the old monthly BBQs to President of the ladies auxiliary. A wonderful example of the continuing spirit of remembering our service men and women.

The Anglesea branch was officially launched in 1946 with Harry Sydall being elected its first president.

The RSL house was donated to members by the Ballarat branch of the RSL and provides a strong social centre for members. The Kangaroo Day Club was established in 1996 and the Laurel Club for Ladies established in 1988, with Jean Lint elected first president.

Since 2011, Heather Boyd has been president of the Laurel Club. Supper dances and day trips maintain an active social life for members of both groups.

After a spine-tingling smoking ceremony by Corinna Eccles and Norm Stanley, the children from Anglesea and Aireys Inlet Primary Schools, led by Karren Stoneham, sang a song written by highly respected Indigenous performer, Dave Arden, who released his song Freedom Called with Paul Kelly.

The overall ceremony was a wonderful balance of the young, the Indigenous contribution to armed services, the spirit of community and the sacrifice of those men and women who have served our country in its time of need.

JOHN RUSSELL’S MESSAGE OF THE ANZAC SPIRIT John Russell, the local Uniting Church Chaplain, delivered a fascinating address on the meaning of ANZAC Day, with particular emphasis on the contribution of our Indigenous Australians.

John made the point that it is a mistake to think that the ANZAC spirit applies only to the men who fought for our country at Gallipoli.

The ANZAC spirit lives on and is truly reflected in the ordinary men and women who daily do extraordinary things by volunteering for causes and charities, including Blaze Aid, the SES, CFA, RSL and service clubs.

He then turned to the contribution of Indigenous Australians.

John explained that “in the first half of the 20th century, non-Europeans were officially barred from serving in Australia’s armed forces, but during World War I approximately 500 Aborigines and a few Torres Strait Islanders managed to enlist”.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have served in every conflict and commitment involving Australian defence contingents since Federation.

Involvement from local schools is an important part of the ANZAC Day ceremony.

Students from Aireys Inlet and Anglesea Primary Schools performed a number of stirring songs (above) and were part of the official proceedings (below).

“Over 1000 Indigenous Australians fought in the First World War, and as many as 3000 throughout our war history.

“They came from a section of society with few rights, low wages, and poor living conditions. Most Indigenous Australians could not vote until 1967,” he added.

However, once in the AIF, these Australians were treated as equals, but sadly after the war, Indigenous veterans found their war service counted for little.

“Very few Indigenous veterans were granted a soldier settler block.”

“They were not given full citizenship and rights, and still had to live under the so-called ‘Protection Acts’ that imposed strict control over almost every aspect of their lives.”

John went on to challenge the audience.

“Now the responsibility lies with us if we want to live in a law abiding, compassionate and tolerant community.

“None of us can change another person, but we can challenge and change ourselves, our attitudes and our actions.”

“Inclusion, regardless of race, customs, religion or political views begins with us.

“Respect, compassion and caring for others begins with us.

“Law abiding begins with us.

“Taking positive action for the betterment of our community and our country, begins with us.

“May we each take these responsibilities seriously.”

The Sound Doctor BRINGING LIVE MUSIC TO THE ANGLESEA MEMORIAL HALL

A dedicated, passionate group of local music lovers has joined forces under the name of ‘The Sound Doctor’ to make use of the Anglesea Memorial Hall as a venue for intimate, quality music concerts with well-established artists. Most events will also feature a local musician as a supporting act.

The lovely old hall evokes fond memories for many of us. Did you ever go to the flicks in the hall over summer? Eating ice-creams and finding a seat in the semi-dark to watch a movie was what you did in a venue without ushers and a sandy feel to the floor.

When he was in his early teens, his parents bought their own holiday house at Fairhaven, where he stayed for the long school holidays. This was where he first made connections with local people through the Surf Life Saving Club and the various social events around the towns over summer.

The first ‘Sound Doctor’ concert with Irish folk singer Lisa Hannigan was held in May, with future concerts in the planning. Our review of this event follows on page 9.

He grew to love the Memorial Hall where he went to see movies.

Lisa Hannigan has a large international fan base, usually performing at locations a bit more renowned than the Anglesea Memorial Hall. Like Glastonbury in England, and Vivid LIVE at the Sydney Opera House.

Her recent world tour included concerts around Australia, as well as the UK, Paris, Iceland, Sweden, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. We were in good company.

local GP Dr David Corbet. David’s connection with the local community dates from his earliest memories of visiting his grandparents’ beach house called “Twa Corbies”. That’s old Scottish for “Two Crows”. But his local connections stretch back much further. His grandparents holiday house was where his parents first got together.

David’s earliest memories of Anglesea are of being terrified of the large kangaroos on the golf course near “Twa Corbies”.

After living in Melbourne for many years, the opportunity arose to move to the Surf Coast.

He quickly found a job at the Surf Coast Medical Centre in Anglesea, planning to look for a house to buy in Geelong or thereabouts. But after six months, he and partner Clare looked at each other and asked why they couldn’t live here?

In the more modest 168seat Anglesea Memorial Hall, there is a warmth to the sound and an intimacy with the audience not found in large venues.

The Sound Doctor group loves that feeling. They prefer this type of event to the monster events at Docklands or the Tennis Centre. The economics are not the same, but this is about our community, not about making large sums of money.

It had so much that they both loved.

There was the ocean. David can’t imagine living away from it now.

There is the space too. Compared to the intensity of large cities it is a luxury.

Then there is the community.

David has been a trainer with his son Jude’s junior football team in Anglesea.

He loves the small community gatherings that the football delivers.

But even as a doctor, he feels that he is more engaged with his patients down here. In a large city, you can feel swamped by the weight of numbers, whereas here it is much more personal.

The family moved into their house in Aireys Inlet just last year. Like many new arrivals, they found it difficult for a time. Leaving friends behind and having few connections is a common experience for those moving to a new place to live. However, it doesn’t take long to make connections and start building friendships.

time, our jobs fill our days, there are our parents’ needs to meet and finally there are our own needs.

David has a background in music, which he is now hoping to nurture and enjoy. He studied music at university before embarking on medicine as a career. During this time, he performed in bands, wrote and performed his own pieces and even put out a few CDs.

He believes that music is very important to the health of the community.

The Sound Doctor’s shows are meant for the community.

Locals can go to Sound Doctor concerts without needing to travel to Melbourne to see quality performers. But the performers themselves will probably enjoy playing at the venue as well.

In Gippsland, the Meeniyan Town Hall has become a magnet for international acts to play.

It is similar to the Anglesea Memorial Hall in that it is small, creating an intimacy with the audience that is rare to find. Because of this, the word has spread, and some acts seek out the venue to perform as part of a larger and more demanding tour.

It’s a return to their roots as performers.

The Sound Doctor hopes to establish a similar following amongst musicians, so that over the years this will become a much loved place where quality music is heard and community flourishes in its midst.

The message seems to have got out, because most of the tickets to the sellout first show were purchased by Anglesea people.

Lisa Hannigan Concert Hits the Right Note

sing and play electric guitar, the trio created an engaging show.

While there were some dyed-in-thewool fans present, much of the audience was hearing the songs for the first time. The foot stomping and clapping at the end of the concert to call the singers back for an encore was an indication of how thoroughly they had won over the audience.

The Sound Doctor Team was so well organised for the Lisa Hannigan concert.

From the car park attendants with their hi-vis vests and red wand lights, to the street signage, the atmospheric bar set up in the Youth Room, where wall decorations and a central table turned the room into an intimate party space for socialising after the show and meeting the artists, to the stage decorations and lighting.

This show oozed professionalism and seemingly effortless efficiency.

And then there was the sound.

The Memorial Hall has a wonderful warm tone when used by those who know what they are doing. This was such an event.

The opening act was Fairhaven singer, 15-year-old Stella Caon. She showed off a voice and a guitar style that will make her a musician with a much higher profile than she currently enjoys, if she continues to practice her art at this level. Watch out for her singing with her band called “Footy Footy Shark Shark” and you’ll be impressed.

This was a very fine concert full of lovely songs and performed by international artists of great ability.

The audience was a real cross-section of local people and others from more distant post codes. Anyone familiar with Anglesea would have recognised many of the faces. Other locals from Aireys Inlet, Torquay and the Surf Coast Shire were there.

Thank you to The Sound Doctor Team for a most enjoyable and well run night of entertainment.

When’s the next one?

English singer/guitarist John Smith played next and what a talent. His original songs were beautifully performed. Later he would sing harmonies with Lisa Hannigan but on his own he was worth the price of admission.

Lisa Hannigan is a masterful singer and instrumentalist. She played a form of folk music that relies on tight vocal harmonies and soaring solos with much light and shade. Some songs finishing with her voice a mere whisper.

Local teenager Stella Caon won great applause for her opening performance.

Surf Coast Art Space — An Experiment in Creativity

Is life on the Surf Coast all about heading to the beach and walking in the bush? Of course, the natural beauty is what draws many visitors and residents here, but in the back sheds and studios of the region, there is a lot more going on.

Creative people are all around us: painters, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists, jewellers, writers, filmmakers, performers and so on, and every artist needs a venue to bring their work to the public.

The Surf Coast Art Space on the Great Ocean Road in Anglesea shows visitors and residents a rich cultural side of the Surf Coast that has not been quite so visible before.

We now have the chance to experience and to buy the art exclusively created in our local area, up to seven days a week, from a local venue.

The growth in popularity of the Shire’s annual calendar art competition and exhibition was at the heart of the establishment of the Art Space late last year.

As the calendar exhibition grew over the past 10 years, Surf Coast Shire’s dynamic Arts Officer, Julie Dyer, spent precious time each year finding a suitable venue and haggling over rent.

The opportunity to use a vacant shop on the Great Ocean Road in Anglesea presented itself in September 2016, for a four-week lease.

The venue for Surf Coast Arts annual Artspot exhibition in October last year then fell through and the Art Space turned out to be a great alternative.

The visitation for each of these initial exhibitions was much larger than at

previous venues, indicating that the central location in the Shire is attractive for tourists as well as for local people.

Since then, a further six-month lease was quickly filled up with hundreds of artists queuing up to show their work.

Groups like St Aiden’s Painters, Riverlee Arts Group, the Weaver Birds and the Anglesea Arthouse printmakers and glass artists have been showcased in highly successful exhibitions.

There are lots of advantages for these groups, including the low cost of mounting shows, professional equipment and advice, and plenty of space for larger works.

There is also now an option for solo and smaller group exhibitions in the region to show their work in a community space, an option that has been taken up by many artists including our wonderful photographer, Darryl Fowler, and the talented painters Nicky Perkin, Elaine d’Esterre and Rob Klein to name a few.

Events like art and social media workshops, and play and poetry readings by writers such as Janet Brown and Kathryn Ross have brought another level of vibrancy to the space.

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that many visitors to the Surf Coast Art Space come along to each new exhibition.

As one holiday house owner from Fitzroy North expressed in the visitors’ book:

“The diversity of work exhibited here continues to enthrall.”

The Surf Coast Art Space in Anglesea has become home to many local exhibitions.

Towards the end of the first six-month lease, the Shire was inundated with support in the form of petitions, submissions and letters to encourage continuing the life of the Surf Coast Art Space, which led to an extra sixmonth lease being signed through to September this year. (Write to your local Councillors Margo Smith and Libby Coker if you would like to see the venue continue after that!)

Upcoming Exhibitions An exciting ‘first’ for the Art Space was the inaugural Ashmore Arts exhibition during June, showing the work from more than 15 of the artists who work at that arcadian studio cluster on the rural fringe of Torquay.

The diverse programming continues in July, with work by a group of young Surf Coast artists, ‘Emerging Talent’, and, in the second half of the month, a group-show of environmentally conscious artists with the title ‘Naturally Precious’.

In August, the Art Space will be one of the many Anglesea venues for the ever-growing Surf Coast Arts Trail (with more than 200 artists participating this year!).

Cinnamon Stephens and friends will be exhibiting after that, and then the Space comes full circle with the Surf Coast Calendar exhibition, this year on display in September.

Aireys Painkalac Reservoir Opens for Public Recreation

Aireys is well known for its paths and open spaces. Much of it is associated with the Painkalac Creek, south of Old Coach Road. The Shire’s ‘Open Spaces Strategy’ highlights the importance of these natural areas to Aireys and district residents.

Barwon Water has recently presented us with a magnificent addition – the Painkalac Reservoir, which was officially ‘opened’ as a public recreation space at a community event in May. Around 40 people walked in from the Distillery Creek picnic area for the open day event, with the unveiling of new interpretive signage, a water-bug activity run by Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CCMA) and staff from Fisheries and Barwon Water on-site to answer questions around the new recreational activities.

We were called the Painkalac Reservoir Community and Agency Group – descriptive but a mouthful.

Some restrictions were surprising to us.

For example, despite this having been a water supply for the townships, there was no potable water at the reservoir.

The water needed to be treated to be potable.

We became PRCAG for short!

We considered the values of the area –

In 2014, Barwon Water asked Aireys and Fairhaven residents for expressions of interest regarding the potential future uses of the reservoir, after it was no longer needed as a part of the reticulated water supply.

PRCAG readily came to an agreement on a list of potential uses that was then recommended to the Barwon Water Board.

They agreed with everything and you can now see some of the results by visiting the newly opened Painkalac Reservoir recreation space, where you’ll find the following:  A shared track (walking, horse riding, bicycles);  Picnic facilities;  Bird watching;  Educational signs;  Recreational fishing.

A BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS?

The group has two additional wishes that are yet to be fulfilled.

One is for a footbridge over the creek near the end of the two tracks, thereby forming a loop walk around the reservoir.

To this end, PRCAG asked that usage be monitored so that, if sufficient use is made of the tracks, Barwon Water will apply for funding for the bridge.

Educational signage provides insight into the catchment area, along with information about the various recreational opportunities available for visitors.

The second request was for an ‘app’ for mobile phones that would enable visitors to learn more about the area and find more enjoyment.

Thanks to the Barwon Water staff who made the task of the committee easy and satisfying. Everything we asked for was provided promptly to assist us.

So please make time to get a taste of the area. Enjoy the beautiful vistas and water birds. They are always changing.

Come back frequently, walk past the counters and show Barwon Water that their confidence and investment were justified.

Then we might get the bridge and app!

Twin Skaters: Lili and Mia Vitkus

Writing this article has placed me on a steep learning curve. I knew nothing about skateboarding until Anglesea locals Mia and Lili Vitkus, my twin interviewees, spoke willingly and articulately about their chosen passion.

Skateboarding is an action sport that involves riding and performing tricks.

There is much more to it than transporting the rider from point A to B. It can be considered a recreational activity, an art form, a job or a method of transportation.

Lili and Mia were introduced to the joys of skateboarding by their older brother Harry, a dedicated skateboarder who reached a level that enabled him to attract sponsorship from some board makers.

They enjoy skateboarding so much because of the amount of freedom it allows them to feel. They liken it to surfing without the waves.

There is much more to skateboarding than just staying upright on the deck (board).

Levels of accomplishment are ascertained through the performance of tricks, which start at a basic level and become more and more sophisticated and challenging as the riders gain more experience and take greater risks.

Some of the basic tricks that the girls mentioned had names that I was completely unfamiliar with, such as ‘Ollie’, ‘180’, ‘Front Shuv’, ‘Pop Shuvit’ and ‘Kick Flip’.

Mia and Lili share a passion for skating.

For example, a ‘Kick Flip’ is a cool, clean-looking trick where the performer jumps vertically, then uses the front foot to flick or kick the board so it spins in the air.

A leading right footer, known as a regular, can further complicate this routine by switching to the left foot, known as a goofy, and vice versa.

Mia and Lili attend the Surf Coast Secondary College in Torquay. When they were in Year 7, the girls approached their school principal, Mr Scott Diamond, with a vision of starting a Skating Academy at the school.

With all their efforts, along with their good friend Frankie, their vision

became a reality. The Skating Academy is now an elective offered to all students of Surf Coast Secondary.

Jarrod Zdrzalka, the Surf Coast Shire's Youth Development Officer, supported the girls to establish the Skating Academy. He also worked with other students to develop a skate park nearby in Merrijig Drive, where teachers take skateboarding students during lunch and break times, thus creating a happy balance between classroom work and recreational activity.

Mia and Lili have both achieved their coaching certificates by spending 18 hours of their holiday time in the classroom and completing an online survey.

The joy on their faces could not be hidden when they talked about the satisfaction they enjoyed from teaching young students.

They cited an example of a little boy who suffers from an illness that causes his skin to blister when he is exposed to the sun. He had a go at skateboarding and reached a level not thought possible. The girls were overjoyed by his reaction to his success.

Lili and Mia have achieved many accolades in their chosen pursuit and won many competitions.

Skatepark Leagues conduct all the competitions throughout Australia. The regional trials were conducted at Port Campbell, Colac and Torquay.

Both girls qualified to perform in the finals, which were held in Hamilton. Mia achieved first prize, with Lili coming a close second.

This gave them entry into the national competitions but unfortunately ill health prevented them from competing at that event.

Mia and Lili are keenly seeking sponsorship to equate with males in the sport.

Often male competitors are given footwear, clothing and new skate decks, including wheels, bearings and axles. The girls would love to see equality in prizes offered and received.

Interestingly, Skate-I-Stan in Afghanistan is allowing and promoting skateboarding for girls, and is enjoying worldwide success.

I hope that Lili and Mia pursue their dreams and get appropriate acknowledgement for all the effort they have put in to follow their passion and promote skateboarding.

Sue Rowe Continues Tradition of Aireys Inlet P.O. as a Social Hub

Sue Rowe, the valued Aireys Inlet Post Mistress (and Post Office owner), doesn’t know the exact year it opened but has a 1920’s photo showing two ladies in front of the ‘Inlet Hotel’, which also displays a sign for a ‘Post & Telegraph Office’.

Old timers, including Linda Lee (who has lived at Aireys since 1953) and Peggy Ward (who owned the PO in the 70s), recall a separate PO building was established ‘sometime before the 1950s’* and it was located beside the General Store with an attached residence.

Postal business was conducted at the shop front, and a path down the east side led to the telephone exchange, also run by the Post Mistress. As with all telephone exchanges, phone calls were not private as the exchange operator could listen in to all conversations.

When Peggy and Brian Ward took over from Bill Lamont in 1973, they added more Post Office rental boxes and operated as a Commonwealth Bank agency.

Peggy told Sue how the PO was ‘a real hub for the community’. She and Brian had two telephones – one for the Post Office and the other solely for the Volunteer Fire Fighters Service.

When they received a call about a nearby fire they had to sound the siren above the PO, to alert the local fire fighters.

Others running the PO included Peg (Margaret) Mc Namara, and Janette Bizewski, who lived in the residence with her family and, as the story goes, would serve in the PO keeping an eye on her children through the kitchen door.

Sue and Gary Davies followed Janette, with some customers telling the current Sue how her namesake ran the PO with “an iron rod”.

Brian and Carol Bailey bought the PO in the early 2000s, when computers and automated processes had improved the speed and efficiency of the myriad of services available.

Street Mail Delivery Rejected A pre-2000 survey showed that 70% of residents did not want street delivery of mail. The Post Office was still a meeting place for the community – a good place for a catch up and a chat while collecting mail.

Current Post Mistress Sue Rowe bought the PO in 2007. She’s overseen major communication and service changes with ‘snail mail’ being replaced by email, texting and social media.

Letter post has waned but, with internet shopping, parcel post is booming. With the growth in boxes – now 580 – plus mail for 300 over the counter, and more space needed to store parcels, Sue relocated the PO to a new building next door.

“It’s funny to see a wellknown opera singer stroll in with boardies and a daggy t-shirt, instead of his public dinner suit.”

“Our resident Brownlow medallist Patrick Dangerfield grew up here and is just one of the crowd.

“Owning the Post Office allows me to know everyone and know what a friendly, supportive community this is, with people who look out for each other (and their dogs!), who care for others who are ill or a bit low, who celebrate and have fun together and who make this such a pleasant place to live.” *Sue welcomes correspondence on this and other PO historical tidbits.

“Many residents were sad to see the ‘quaint little PO’ go but it was bulging at the seams and is now a popular new café,” she says.

Sue owns the Aireys Inlet postal business under licence covering what is sold, any other services offered and opening hours.

Like all coastal businesses, Sue’s is busiest in summer but she has regular help from Tony Dunn to sort mail and “another Sue” (Goldsworthy) helps over the counter two days a week.

“Unlike other businesses, our service is essential all year round so no long holidays for me! While many residents travel north or overseas during winter, we hold a lot of mail then. I could stand at the door and shout ‘Come and buy a stamp’ between May and August.”

A Friendly Meeting Place “Most people like the laid back, friendly atmosphere of our rural PO. We often have time to chat and get to know people and if we are busy locals will say ‘I’ll go and grab a coffee and come back’, or even apologise to others for keeping them waiting.

“A few notable people live or have holiday houses in the area.”

“Celebrity musicians, performers, authors and sportspeople have visited the PO, and are usually friendly and relaxed.

Retirement Choice A Happy Outcome for Aireys Cultural Activities and Asylum Seekers Laurie Mason, Publicity Co-ordinator for Aireys Inlet Rural Australians for Refugees (AIRAR), interviews Dr Lynn Barnett (recent Aireys’ retiree) who hosts ‘Lighthouse Soirees’ at her home to help raise much-needed funds for AIRAR. Q: Lynn, you seem to have led a fascinating professional life. Tell us a little about it.

Some time after finishing university in Melbourne, I married a lawyer who was setting up the Public Solicitors Department in Port Moresby, PNG. I felt it was remarkable that, as it was the Queensland Legal Code that was practised, amongst other “criminals” he had to defend were tribal wigged head hunters (for murder).

I worked there with the New Guinea Research Unit, which later become part of the new University.

Later, in London, I trained as an Anthropologist and Psychotherapist, and while working in the National

Health Service in Devon, was able to arrange a five-year work exchange with a group of family health professionals in Russia, join a UNICEF project to support workers with refugee children during the war in former Yugoslavia, and attend many international conferences of IPPNW (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) held in interesting places such as Mexico, Japan, Kiev and Sweden.

I also worked over some years with a group of American and Russian psychologists and social workers in the Community Centres UNESCO set up in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine to deal with the frightening health and social consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.

We were involved in training the staff.

There were no social workers or community centres in these countries before this time.

Q: So why the decision to retire in the small hamlet of Aireys Inlet after such an interesting international career?

Now, nearing 80, I felt it was time to settle down and have time to digest these experiences.

I have been coming to Aireys Inlet since I was a child. Then it was for summer holidays from school, later for summers to escape from English winters and now it is to settle permanently after living and working in Europe for 50 years.

I felt that Aireys Inlet has so much to offer, quite apart from its beautiful, unspoiled beaches and cliffs; its great bookshop and other shops, trade and medical people, interesting eating places, lots of friendly people who are environmentally very aware and active, trying to preserve and encourage local plants, birds and animals.

Q: And the decision to join AIRAR? Horrified and ashamed by the Government’s inhuman attitude towards and provision for asylum seekers and refugees, on arriving at Aireys and buying a house, I immediately joined AIRAR, an impressive group of people who are determined not only to support refugees and asylum seekers as best they can by writing letters to members 18

They played sonatas by Bach and Brahms, again followed by refreshments. The musicians very generously donated their fee, which was contributed to the legal fees of two young Asian refugee seekers in Queenscliff.

More concerts will be arranged.

Through arranging these two soirees, I have been put in contact with other musicians from around the local area and discovered that there is classical music of different kinds going on.

So now, for me, Aireys Inlet has it all!

Aireys lacks one thing, which all my life has been of vital importance - classical music, which I have always listened to and played (being an amateur viola player).

I played in various orchestras and for 15 years in a string quartet, which in all that time had only had one change in personnel, the second violin player!

It had occurred to me when I bought the house that it was a perfect setting for musical soirees and I then realised that these could be a way of assisting AIRAR’s fundraising.

For the first ‘Lighthouse Soiree’, we were lucky to be offered a concert by ‘The Affinity Collective’.

This is a small group of chamber musicians who met while training at ANAM and recently became professional.

Fifty people arrived for the exciting concert of music by J.S Bach, Pavel Haas and Leos Janacek, followed by home-made refreshments. Wine glasses were lent by the Aireys Pub and chairs were hired from the community hall.

For the second concert, an old school friend, Gillian Rosefield, who has played the violin professionally in many well-known orchestras and chamber groups in Europe, was accompanied by Elizabeth Drake, a Melbourne prize-winning pianist and film music composer (e.g. The Japanese Story).

Moths Migrate from Anglesea

Inspiration can take on many forms. Having the confidence to act on your inspiration and a supportive environment to nurture you on that journey is a gift.

Having loved drawing and creating from a young age, my passion and enthusiasm waned on not getting accepted into a Fine Art Course in my younger years.

I moved onto other interests and drew and created in my own quiet time.

When I joined the Anglesea Art House, I still felt unsure.

Exposing yourself to external opinions takes confidence. Was I ready?

I received an email inviting Art House members to participate in the Moth Migration Project. Hilary Lopez, a New York-based artist had put out an expression of interest for print makers around the world to contribute to her Moth Migration installation.

Artists were required to print, draw and cut out more than 40,000 moths.

The project was part of a larger installation titled “Cross Pollination”, referring to how insects pollinate plant life but also to the cross pollination of ideas in art and science.

The Moth Migration Project was using moths, nocturnal pollinators, as the vehicle for the cross pollination and systematic exchanges between people.

I accepted the invitation, made a commitment and got to work.

Being fascinated with stencil art and working in a medium transferring an image in reverse to create a piece of art interested me.

Coupled with my passion for nature, I set out researching local moths. I bought some lino and started on my naive journey.

Come Wednesday morning, I attended the printing class at the Art House, with lino in hand.

The Art House provided the supportive structure and Lee Powell, who runs the Wednesday printmaking course, was there to guide, encourage and provide the advice I needed.

The Art House was alive with discussion, members both novice and regulars giving advice, admiring work, helping each other to create.

I felt welcomed and accepted. I got to work printing and was on my way to being involved in my first art installation. Along with 12 other artists, a plethora of moths was created in many forms of printing varying from lino-cuts, acetate prints, and collagraphs to lithographs.

In April, the moths ‘took flight’ to New York. They will be attached to gallery walls and ceiling in a giant geographically accurate web. This web will trace the origin location to every participating person.

The moths will “fly” from city to state to country tracing the “migration” pattern of people’s participation. We hope they make it to Australia.

Why 40,000 moths? The number derives from the number of moths a grizzly bear may eat per day prior to hibernation. What does the grizzly have to do with migration? Probably not a whole lot beyond intercepting the work of the moths by eating them – well in North America at least.

The Virtue of Patience ANGLESEA WELCOMES NEW BAPTIST PASTOR MICHAEL VARNEY The Baptist church community in Anglesea has been a wonderful example of the virtue of patience as they continued to pray and work together to look for a new pastor to care and lead them into the future.

They celebrated together as Michael Varney was inducted as their new pastor in early April.

On a chilly Sunday afternoon Michael and his wife Kathy were warmly welcomed by a large congregation and many visitors.

Michael is excited by the opportunity but recognises the challenge of changing both location and career. He has spent the previous 30 years working as a senior medical scientist for the service that provides the matching for organ transplants.

The pastoral appointment at Anglesea is the culmination of a journey seeking God’s direction for his life and a strong sense that this is the right time and the right place.

Michael began life in a family of five children in Sheffield in England before moving to live in Burton-on-Trent. At 18, he moved to Bristol to study medical laboratory science and stayed to work for the Blood Transfusion and Organ Transplant Service.

late 20s helped him reconnect him with God and opened his eyes to a relationship with God. In exploring this relationship, Michael began to attend and get involved in a local church and studying the Bible.

This gave him the opportunity to serve both in and outside the church in a wide range of activities.

At the age of 24, he resigned to spend a year working and travelling around Australia and managed to secure work in the transplant laboratories.

Over the last 10 years, Michael has explored a number of avenues as he has worked out God’s call to commit all of his working life to serving God.

Whilst travelling, Michael was offered a permanent position in Melbourne, which he took up after returning to England and gaining residency.

These have included theological study, hospital chaplaincy, counselling and more recently serving at a community meal at New Hope Baptist Church in Blackburn. The meal, free to anyone, began just on Christmas Day and then moved to every Saturday of the year.

The meal now serves between 130 and 180 a week with the last Christmas meal serving 340!

He met and married Kathy in Melbourne and they began life together in Mitcham and then Blackburn.

Life soon centred around his wife and two daughters and work at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He completed a PhD and is internationally recognised in his field; more recently this has focused on the genetics of type one diabetes and coeliac disease.

Michael was raised in the Catholic tradition but, not uncommonly, disconnected from the formal church in teenage years and looked for meaning and purpose elsewhere.

Guests are offered not only a delicious meal but physical and emotional support, companionship and warm acceptance no matter what their circumstances.

Michael’s leadership role at the meal has focused on the team who are hosts to the guests; sitting at the tables listening to stories, offering support and companionship to many.

meal with Michael as their pastor.

Michael has journeyed with them as they have grown in their love for God, one another and offering themselves in service.

He was very excited when they arrived in a minibus to attend his induction service and looks forward to the opportunity of hosting them again in Anglesea.

So, what is Michael Varney bringing to Anglesea? Michael says he brings himself and is looking forward to getting to know the community of Anglesea, discovering what God is already doing here and continuing the wonderful vision of the Anglesea Baptist church.

Michael loves the gift of love and community offered by the church and in particular through the Op Shop, Seaside Seconds. He can be found in the ministry centre next door most days of the week.

Currently Michael and Kathy are renting a home in town and look forward to starting to build their new home in the not too distant future.

The Baptist community has very warmly welcomed Michael and Kathy and is excited to be working together in their service to God and the community. Their patience has been well rewarded.

Ross River Virus

If you live in Anglesea, the chances are you either know someone who has had Ross River Virus this year, or you’ve had it yourself. Throughout January and February we saw a very unusual number of cases coming to the GP clinic in Anglesea.

This year has seen the worst outbreak of Ross River Virus (RRV) on record in Victoria! More than 2,000 suspected cases were notified to the Department of Health & Human Services from January to March this year.

vulnerable to epidemics, with a good proportion of our poor old Eastern Grey population testing positive in 2015.

Thankfully RRV is not life-threatening nor dangerous, although it can be debilitating.

And the Surf Coast has been perhaps the worst hit region. We had 10 times the infection rate (per 10,000 people) compared to the average rate for the state.

RRV has been found through all parts of Australia, but is more common in rural areas. It was first recorded in 1929 in NSW, and the virus was identified in 1959 near Ross River, near Townsville.

Epidemics of RRV occur periodically, usually in the summer months, often after a particularly wet season.

This is because the virus is spread via mosquitoes, and their population thrives in warm, wet weather.

Mosquitoes carry the virus from kangaroo to kangaroo (where the virus normally resides), and also then to humans.

This also makes our region more

So what happens once you’re bitten by a pesky infected mosquito? Well, firstly, you won’t be able to tell from the bite reaction. But after about a week you’ll start to feel symptoms of lethargy, aching joints, rash, a fever, or headache – most people get only a couple of those symptoms.

The illness varies greatly between people in terms of what symptoms they get, and for how long they last. Most people have symptoms for weeks to months, and are usually better within 36 months. Some are affected longerterm than this.

A bit of good news - once infected you should then have lifelong immunity against the virus!

And by the way, children can be infected too but rarely show symptoms of the illness.

There is no specific treatment, but most people benefit from simple painrelieving medications and rest.

Prevention is better than cure, and so it is wise to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes; try to stay indoors during dusk and dawn, use effective mosquito repellent (containing DEET or picaridin), and wear loose-fitting, longsleeved clothing.

This being said, RRV infection rates normally decrease through the winter months, so we may be able to breathe a sigh of relief soon.

An Inspiring Musical Morning

"Midnight. Not a sound from the pavement. Has the moon lost her memory?

She is smiling alone. In the lamplight the withered leaves collect at my feet.

And the wind begins to moan."

This opening passage from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, ‘Cats’, was the song Silvie Paladino chose to open her magnificent concert as part of season one of the ‘Musical Mornings’, which I recently attended.

Silvie had returned by popular demand to sing hits from musicals, female vocalists and songs of inspiration.

She has performed in many venues in Australia and New Zealand and played two different roles – Cosette and Fantine – from the musical ‘Les Miserables’ in London's West End. Season One of the Musical Mornings has produced the following performances:  Lanza Sings Again, which celebrates the incredible life story and sensational hits of Mario Lanza, one of the greatest tenors of our time.

Star tenor, Ray Best sang Mario's hits, including Y ou'll Never Walk Alone, Be My Love, Strangers In The Night and O Sole Mio.  Another walk down memory lane with 22 Burt Bacharach hits, including I'll Never Fall In Love Again and That's What Friends Are For.  Ian Stenlake made a welcome return with a new show featuring and paying tribute to his favourite composers.

 Thursday 7 December – The Christmas Extravaganza

Musical Morning concerts are held at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) and sponsored by Tucker's Funeral and Bereavement Services, with a free morning tea before each show.

Guests enjoy lunch after a ‘Musical Morning’ at GPAC.

The performances are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the given week. The Thursday performances enable Surf Coast residents to enjoy the performance as well as catching up with friends to make a very enjoyable social outing.

Surf Coast Shire subsides and promotes this program.

A season's ticket includes five performances with allocated seating, bus transport to and from the door, morning tea and a two-course meal at various lunch venues.

Individual tickets can also be purchased if you wish to only attend specific performances or cannot participate in all five.

The Lorne/Aireys Inlet/Anglesea bus departs from the Lorne Senior Citizens Centre in Mountjoy Parade at 8.40am,

at Aireys Inlet V-Line bus stop at 9.00am and from the Anglesea Senior Citizens Centre, McMillan Street at 9.30am.

The shows run from 10.30am until 12 midday. Coaches then travel to the dining venue for lunch. They depart the lunch venue at approximately 1.45pm and travel home to the nominated dropoff points, arriving between 2.30pm and 3.00pm.

Through support for the Musical Mornings, Surf Coast Shire continues to support senior citizens across the region. Make the most of these wonderful social and stimulating opportunities.

SURF COAST FILM SOCIETY

Do you enjoy a good movie, but don’t want to have to travel to Waurn Ponds? The Surf Coast Film Society screens films once a month at the Anglesea Fire Station.

We have been operating for nearly two years and have been travelling the globe via the media of film. Our small committee selects quality films in a breadth of different genres.

We’ve had French comedies, Indigenous films, musical, animations, Aussie classics and many more. Following the film we have a light supper and an opportunity to discuss the film and give it our own ‘star’ rating.

The Society is supported by Surf Coast Arts Inc, (SCA) and is a member of the Federation of Victorian Film Societies.

SCA is a volunteer run community group whose mission is to stimulate artistic and cultural fabric of the Surf Coast Shire, so the Film Society is a great fit.

To come along to a film, all we ask is that you become a member of both, SCA membership is $10 annually and the film society $1, which is payable at the door. You are then eligible to attend any of our films for the rest of the year. In addition, many of the films we have shown are also available from our library of films and can be borrowed by members at one of our film nights.

MOVIE REVIEW

A thief with a large amount of cash dies at a bed and breakfast owned by two elderly women. They decide to keep the money but disposing of the body proves extremely difficult because, due to their own phobias and hang-ups, the ladies cannot leave their house for long periods of time.

They devise a way to dispose of the body without ever leaving the house. The situation is further complicated when an investigator begins sniffing around and decides to stay a few nights in the bed and breakfast.

Community Corner NEWS AND UPDATES FROM YOUR CORNER OF THE WORLD Clean Up Australia Day A big thank you to all who came out for the annual Clean Up Australia Day in Anglesea.

We must pause for a moment to remember the recent loss of annual participant Stan Stott, who with wife Melva, came down every year and paddled the river digging out rubbish.

We were delighted to have teams from Anglesea Paddleboats, ANGAIR, Coastal Forest Lodge, Great Ocean Road Coast Committee, Camp Wilkin, EcoLogic, Anglesea and District Community Bank, the Anglesea Backpackers and the Anglesea Beachfront Family Caravan Park.

Well done on another trailer load of rubbish off our streets and out of our river.

A special shout out to the outstanding contribution of the kids who joined in this year and Oaks Bakery and Stabb’s Butchers for the donation of the sausage sizzle. Yum! Great job everyone!

Suzanne Connell Wins State Award for Anglesea Newsagency Anglesea Newsagency’s Suzanne Connell has been awarded the VANA (Victorian Newsagents Association) ‘2016 Employee of the Year’.

She was presented with her award at the Crown Palladium where more than 200 guests gathered for the annual awards’ night.

Anglesea Newsagent Corinne Nigro said she and husband Paul were extremely proud of Sue and all she has done for them, their store and their wonderful customers.

“Suzanne has been a part of Anglesea Newsagency for the past 14 years and we’ve had the pleasure of working with her since we started about 18 months ago,” said Corinne.

Anglesea News & Lotto was also nominated for the ‘2016 Retail Newsagent of the Year’ award and very proud to be in the final six in Victoria. The newsagency was nominated by Fairfax, News Limited, Hallmark Cards and The Lott (Tatts).

KAOS Victorian Sports Award Finalist KAOS 2016 was recently nominated for the Victorian Outdoor/Active Recreation Initiative of the Year and was delighted to receive recognition as a finalist at the presentation dinner earlier this year.

Lighten Up in AIREYS this Winter The annual Love Winter in A ireys festival is in full swing, with a diverse range of events and activities presented every week from June to the end of August.

The jam-packed program offers plenty of light relief for locals and visitors to the coast, featuring art, music, food, literature, dancing and more.

“The program just gets bigger and better every year,” said Festival coordinator Anne Dansick.

“We’re seeing even greater numbers at all our events this winter, with the festival having gained a much greater profile in recent years.”

“We’re now attracting visitors from all over the Surf Coast, Geelong and Melbourne,” she added.

Now in its sixth year, the Love Winter in A ireys festival kicked off in June with Aireys Biggest Morning Tea at The Captain of Aireys, followed that weekend with a fabulous yoga retreat at Little Feast, which included yoga, shiatsu, relaxation, mindfulness meditation and amazing food from resident chef Pia Maher.

This year’s Love Winter in Aireys program lists a record 28 events on its calendar, and has already featured the popular ‘Fairhaven Winter Ball’ and Aireys Inlet ‘Foodie’ Market, along with the delightful ‘Lucinda Light One-Woman Show’.

A highlight this year is the ‘Salsa Sunday’ on 6 August, with a dance lesson by La Vida Salsa and big band Los Locos at the Aireys Pub. With literary gatherings, international dinners, trivia nights, live music, art, tennis and wellbeing also still to come, the Love Winter in Aireys festival delivers a huge mix of events across a wide range of genres.

“We’re confident there’s something on the program for everyone. Whether you’re into art, food, music, sport, literature or relaxation, you’ll find an event or two that provide the perfect way to lighten up this winter.”

Some events have limited places, so organisers urge people to check out the program early and book in for events that are of interest.

Community Corner NEWS AND UPDATES FROM YOUR CORNER OF THE WORLD Anglesea and around our Shire. These roadshows focus on reducing our carbon emissions and feature Council’s bulkbuy solar panel project.

Council has set an ambitious target - for our Shire to source 25% of energy from renewables by 2020. To help us achieve this goal, we are working with renewable energy experts and non-profit organisation, Positive Charge.

OUT AND ABOUT IN THE ANGLESEA WARD I write this column on the eve of our Budget Submission Hearing where many local organisations will seek support for community projects in the Anglesea Ward and across our Shire.

Projects on the agenda include proposals to upgrade the Anglesea Motor Yacht Squadron, Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club and the Anglesea Cricket Club.

The Aireys Inlet District Association wants to activate the space between the Painkalac Creek and retail precinct, while the Anglesea Community House is seeking a public transport bus trial between Anglesea and Waurn Ponds.

Other project proposals focus on housing affordability, reducing our carbon footprint, supporting the Anglesea Art Space and engaging community in future planning of the former Alcoa coal mine site.

So many fantastic projects presented by so many amazingly passionate community volunteers.

It will certainly be a challenge to determine which projects will be funded within our annual Budget, particularly as we are now rate-capped at 2 % . However, I would like to congratulate everyone who is taking part in the Budget decision-making process – it is a most valuable, insightful and enabling democratic opportunity.

Renewable Energy Roadshows On a different note, I would like to recognise our Renewable Energy Roadshows, which have been taking place in

Small Grants Program Another initiative that I am proud to support, is Council’s Small Grants Program. This program has helped to kick start many a community venture or enable local groups to grow and prosper.

Earlier this month, Council was proud to announce grant recipients including the Anglesea Community Rock Choir, the Surf Coast Arts Trail writing workshops, Anglesea Community Garden mosaic project and a defibrillator for the Anglesea Netball Club.

Enrol Now for Kinder 2018 On a final note, I would like to encourage parents who would like to enrol their child at kindergarten, to apply now. You can do so by applying online. Families who submit their form via www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/kinder2018 before Friday 30 June 2017 will be considered for the first round of offers for places next year.

Be Aware of Theft The most concern for us at this time of the year is our vacant holiday homes and I encourage everyone to be vigilant and report anything suspicious.

Over the past six weeks on a Saturday and Sunday we have had several cars broken into, mainly at the Lighthouse car park in Federal St, Aireys Inlet.

Redback Fever comes to Anglesea Are you old enough to remember Slim Newton’s Golden Guitar winning song, Redback on the Toilet Seat, in 1972? No? Then what about the Angels’ 1991 album, Red Back Fever?

The redback spider is one of Australia’s best known venomous creatures that lurks around human habitation and causes between 2,000 to 10,000 bites a year.

But have you ever seen one? Now is your chance.

These thefts are occurring from late morning to midafternoon and we encourage everyone to report anything that is out of the normal.

ANGAIR Wildflower Weekend and Art Show

We are allocating resources into the area when we can to address the issue.

The ANGAIR Wildflower Weekend and Art Show this year will feature the redback, bird-eating tarantulas, scorpions, snakes and a snapper in the shape of a baby crocodile.

24-Hour Surf Coast Response Just a reminder that we are now providing a 24-hour response on the Surf Coast with a night shift patrol.

If you need police, we are available on the coast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so please don’t hesitate to ring 000.

Memorial for Constable David Digby In November 2017, on a date to be announced, Victoria Police will acknowledge one of our members who was lost at sea during the execution of his duties.

In 1881, Constable David Digby was guarding a wreck just off our coast. When returning to shore he drowned.

Constable Digby has never been found.

We will be acknowledging his service and sacrifice by laying a memorial plaque on the front lawn of the Anglesea Police Station. We will provide further information later in the year. We are working with our graves committee to fix a date.

Other nasties on show will be the environmental weeds that can devastate our local bushland and coastal dunes.

But, as always, the stars of the annual show will be the glorious wildflowers indigenous to the Surf Coast and other Australian natives grown in local gardens on colourful display.

Other attractions include indigenous plant sales, second-hand natural history books, information desks showcasing the work of local authorities involved in the environment, a coffee stall, guided wildflower walks and children’s activities.

The show will run from 10 am – 4 pm on the weekend of September 23 and 24 at the Anglesea Memorial Hall, McMillan Street, Anglesea.

Operation Action Bolt Operation Action Bolt is an initiative with which we have been involved over recent months. The operation involves the inspection of firearm storage facilities and firearms held by registered gun owners.

Building a Fence in Anglesea: 101

How do you know if a planning permit is required to build or replace a boundary fence in Anglesea?

The rules set out in the Surf Coast Planning Scheme aim to “retain a sense of openness between properties by encouraging the use of open style fencing and vegetation in preference to solid forms of fencing”.

Anglesea has two fencing precincts, which are shown in the map below.

Examples of decorative post and wire fences and vegetation screens.

Precinct A properties do not require a planning permit for fences no more than 1.5m high and constructed with post and wire.

Confused? Council’s planning department can walk you through the rules and help you with your application if required.

All other fence types in this precinct require a permit and must meet the following specifications:

 fences next to or at the rear of the dwelling should be no more than 1.6m high and at least 75 per cent permeable.  fences forward of the dwelling should be no more than 1.5m high and at least 75 per cent permeable.

All other fence types in Precinct B require a permit.

Specifications for permits applying to fences forward of the dwelling should be no more than 1.5m high and at least 75 per cent permeable.

More About Our Bathing Box

First it was a bathing box, then it was a ‘newspaper collection depot’, followed by a store room for the Art House. Now it belongs to the Historical Society and, after we have restored it to its former glory, it will become our Marine History display.

After much planning and thought about where we would put the bathing box and how we would use it, the Surf Coast Shire gave us a very pleasant surprise by telling us that they would organise the move.

After a few weeks of excited anticipation, the bathing box arrived on a trailer. The footings were put in and a crane lifted it into position.

As yet, we have not been able to ascertain who was the original owner of this bathing box. It is much larger than most.

The older people in Anglesea who once used the boxes along the beach, tell me that most owners The old bathing boxes in the sand dunes at Anglesea beach. allowed other people to change in their boxes.

Shannon from the Shire, who was in charge of move, asked what steps we wanted up to the door.

We suggested a ramp would be more practical. This he organised within a few days, including hand rails on both sides. The design is in fitting with the age of the building. It is now up to us to restore it.

The window has been reglazed. A local plumber is replacing the old rusty roofing iron. It will be red, as were the Bathing Boxes that once stood in the sand dunes along the main beach.

We are currently sourcing second-hand weather boards to replace the damaged ones.

Music, Stories and Nature-based Play Prove a Popular Combination for Anglesea Playgroup

Since the opening of the new kindergarten, Anglesea Playgroup has been very busy with lots of new families joining in planned activities every Thursday and Friday from 9.30am.

With the wonderful ‘Fairy Melody Music Program’ also offered each fortnight and ‘Story Time’ once per month, Playgroup participants have a chance to explore their creativity.

Boys and girls, aged six months to five years, learn the ‘Magic of Music’ with Fairy Melody, singing with instruments, clapping/ rhythm, dance/ freeze, story, finger puppets and percussion.

The play space offered at the Anglesea Kindergarten provides Playgroupers with a nature-based setting, which is shown to be of great benefit. Children who play in natural settings from an early age are said to play in more diverse, imaginative and creative ways and show improved language and collaboration skills.

At ‘Story Time’, preschool-aged children enjoy 30 minutes of lively and entertaining readings from children’s books, with related interactive fun.

Spirits will not be dampened as the weather starts to chill and the rain kicks in, with plans to cook, make Playdoh and utilise the wonderful resources available to Anglesea Playgroup.

The new facility also offers an abundance of indoor and outdoor play, with outdoor activities during the fair weather proving an absolute favourite.

PLATYPUS TOY LIBRARY SUPPORTS CHILDREN'S PLAY

Families are also very fortunate to have the Platypus Toy Library within close reach of the Anglesea Kindergarten.

Play is how children learn and making it fun is nature's way of ensuring children get lots and lots of practice.

Even tiny babies play, practising moving their hands or sucking their toes, which helps them learn to control their bodies. The games children play are directly linked to 34

the needs of the growing body and mind.

 Have a range of items covering all stages of growth and development.

If play is a child's work, then they must also have the tools for their trade. Toys are tools that help a child to enjoy play. Toy libraries are where fun, creativity and play are valued and promoted!

 Provide an opportunity to meet other caregivers to share concerns, interact with others and make new friends.

At a toy library you can borrow from a vast array of toys that support your child’s skill development and imagination. Toy libraries aim to support families and encourage togetherness with quality time spent playing with children.

The Platypus Toy Library aims to:  Lend out quality educational items.  Be inexpensive … $25 from term 2.  Principally cater for younger children, 0-8 years.

Red-browed Finch Neochmia temporalis These very attractive small, grass finches, about 120 mm in length, are mainly olive-green and red. The back and wings are olive-green but a more yellow area is obvious above the shoulder, just below the grey nape. The underparts are grey.

The head is grey with a conspicuous, broad, scarlet-red eyebrow and stout, red bill. The rump is bright scarlet in contrast to the black tail. Immature birds are duller and browner with no red eyebrow and with a black bill.

Red-browed Finches occur along the east coast of Australia but not in Tasmania. They inhabit shrubbery and undergrowth on the edge of forest, woodlands and other habitats where areas of grass are available from suitable cover. Thickets of native and exotic pest plants bordering cultivated land, roadsides, orchards, parks, picnic grounds and gardens are particularly suitable.

They move in small groups, up to ten in the non-breeding season. They blend so well into the background that they may not be noticed until they are flushed into flight, uttering a high-pitched tsee tsee, then settle into a nearby bush. They prefer to fly from cover to cover rather than out in the open as they are vulnerable to attack from predators such as goshawks.

They eat seeds from grasses and herbaceous plants and will extract seeds from casuarina trees and fruits and berries.

They also eat small insects. They drink by scooping up water.

Nesting takes place when seeds are most available. In the south, from September to November, and in the north, from January to April. The nest is substantial, made from dried grasses collected by the male, and lined with soft materials.

On the side is a tunnel entrance. The nest is usually situated in thorny bushes less than 2m above the ground.

Six to eight pure white eggs are laid.

SCAMS IN CYBERVILLE At the time of writing, the computer hacking group ‘Anonymous’ had just launched an attack that reportedly affected 75,000 computers around the world, locking access to computer systems in large companies and hospitals and holding their data to ransom.

While we at home don’t need to worry much about this kind of invasion, there’s no shortage of other scams and frauds lurking in cyberville, waiting to be invited into our lives.

Emails promising prizes, or advising your account is about to expire are a couple of very common examples of ‘phishing’ … innocent looking emails that will try to make you reveal an account and password.

If you’ve ever paid for an app, movie or service from AppStore, iTunes or Facebook, or if you belong to a store loyalty club, then your financial information could be at risk through these accounts.

The email will tell you ‘You have won!’ and you need to log in to your store account via their link.

Or it might look like an invoice. The message presents as a receipt for something you’ve ‘bought’ and invites you to log in to your account if you wish to dispute it.

In either case, supplying your details through their link gives them all they need to do their nefarious work.

I recently received an email thanking me for buying 300 gold bars or something in the game ‘Clash of Clans’.

While I’m sure I’ve restricted the kids’ iPads to ban in-app purchases, just knowing they’ve got this game set alarm bells ringing.

The message contained a link to log in to my AppStore account. It all looked official enough except for one small detail, which identified it immediately as a fake, and saved me from having to use ‘unconventional’ methods to get the truth out of my kids.

All I had to do was check the sender’s address. Most times this will tell you if it’s genuine or not.

So while there are plenty of further steps you can take, security doesn’t need to be too complicated. The slightest amount of caution can keep your data - and credit card - safe.

Write Angles

Our home town

He can run at top speed because he still has front-wheel drive, but he can't scratch behind his ears so I have to do that. I might get a carer's allowance for looking after him - I didn't get one for looking after Stan.

Throughout its history, Anglesea has been renowned as a caring and sharing town where everyone comes together in times of need.

In the early days, if coaches rolled over when crossing the rivermouth, residents turned out to lend a hand to rescue horses, goods, and passengers.

Frequent bushfires saw people pitching in to battle the flames; and then sharing accommodation.

Today, when ill-fortune or sickness strikes, there are kind words and gestures everywhere you turn.

I very much appreciate all the kindness and support that I'm receiving from our wonderful townspeople, shopkeepers, and medical centre. Your thoughtfulness and friendship really does gladden my days, and eases my journey.

Cat-astrophe I'm also caring for a three-legged cat - now nicknamed Hopalong Tripod. He's coping very well with the loss of a back leg; which cost a fortune to amputate as he doesn't have a healthcare card.

However what makes this newsworthy is that there are now two three-legged cats living next door to each other. Surely Anglesea would have to be the only town in our country that could make such a claim. This should be entered in the Fosters Book of Records for unmatched Australian coincidences. We might even organise a three-legged race for felines.

Spell Check Blues My grandson was coming to help me with something I couldn't manage, and I said I'd found some spanners in Stan's workshop. But the spellcheck kept insisting it was 'spammers' I'd found. Oh! the times, they are a-changing!

My son has a cheap Chinese mobile phone as an interim until he can afford another better one (if that makes sense). The spellcheck is hopeless - it just mangles everything. He's given up trying to correct it, so I just make my own translations.
