Local Writer’s Career Takes Off

The usual advice given to budding writers is to write what you know. Local author Mark Smith has his own take on this, suggesting, “Write what you are passionate about.”

I often get asked about Anglesea Occasional Care and what it has to offer our communities. Our service operates in accordance with the Victorian Early Years Learning Framework practices. We have highly skilled, qualified and dedicated staff who offer a stimulating learning environment where families and children are made to feel welcome and valued.

Children learn and develop at different rates and this is reflected in the learning environment. Our educators provide a learning environment that supports individual development with a sensitive, caring and holistic approach.

We are a registered Care Provider with the Family Assistance Office (FAO).

Families who meet the Family Assistance Office work/training/study test can claim the Child Care Benefit (CCB) for all ages attending the service including both three and four-year-old programs. Unlike three-year-old kindergarten programs which are not funded, eligible parents are able to access the CCB for their three-yearolds’ attendance at childcare. Don’t hesitate to contact the Community House for more information.

Our childcare service operates Monday to Friday, 9.15am to 2.15pm, with 14 children attending daily between the

ages of 12 months to five years of age.

A maximum of three sessions per child is available each week. We currently still have some vacancies for children over three years. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please feel free to call in anytime and meet the team of educators.

Mark has been active in local environmental causes such as ‘Stop the Ocean Pollution’, which saw an end to the practice of pumping sewerage into the sea and resulted in the installation of the tertiary treatment plant and the provision of recycled water to local sporting clubs.

elders out in country, taken to places that can only be visited with permission and learning about the people’s spirituality and connection with the land.

Here, Mark has seen things that can’t be rationally explained, but describes it as a sort of parallel knowledge that he can only partially understand, but recognises exists. The participants also see the life of the indigenous people in all its harsh reality. He used the insights into aboriginal culture gained on these trips, to write with credibility and sensitivity on this subject.

More recently, he joined the campaign to shut down Alcoa’s power station and coal mine. Mark is a keen surfer and enjoys many outdoor pursuits, including mountain bike riding and snowboarding.

Mark has a full-time day job as director of the Santa Monica residential campus near Lorne. Here he runs four-week programs assisting Year 9 boys from St Bernard’s College with the transition to manhood. As well as outdoor recreational activities, the camps have a strong emphasis on environmental programs, with the students volunteering with groups such as Coastcare and ANGAIR.

The Writing Journey Always an avid reader, Mark traces the genesis of his writing career back to his student days. When the time came to take this on seriously, he completed a course at Writers Victoria and honed his skills writing short stories. He submitted these pieces to competitions and journals far and wide and nothing happened for a year, but eventually one piece was published and from here his successes snowballed.

Other short stories to have come from this experience include On the Port Keats Road, Sugarbag Dreamin’ Country and Old Man’s Country, which was published in the Big Issue’s Fiction Edition last year.

While the subject matter of Manyuk is far from Mark’s life on the Surf Coast, it draws heavily on some of his most profound life experiences. Each year for seven years, Mark has taken a small group of students on a two-week excursion to Nauiyu, a remote aboriginal community on the Daly River in the Northern Territory. Here the group spends many hours with the

Keen to stretch his writing abilities, Mark embarked on a course with the ambitious title of “Write a Novel in a Year”. Mentored by well know writers such as Toni Jordan, Graeme Simsion and Arnold Zable, Mark polished the manuscript of a novel and pitched it to Text publishers. For some time it lay on the “slush pile” of manuscripts in the publisher’s office until one day someone plucked his work from the heap and took it home to read.

Mark has since attracted critical acclaim for many of his short stories, culminating in winning the Josephine Ulrick prize - Australia’s most lucrative short story award and one of the richest in the world.

This story, Manyuk, is set in Darwin and tells of a young aboriginal woman living away from her country, who wants her newborn daughter to learn her culture, much to the opposition of her white husband.

Two of Mark’s short stories feature in Best Australian Stories 2014 and 2015.

The Road to Winter

Squeezing his writing around his work — toiling away after the students at Santa Monica have gone to bed and occasionally heading to the solitude of his sister’s shack on the coast of Tasmania — Mark is now working on the sequel in which the sileys fight back.

The novel, The Road to W inter, is aimed at young adult readers. It is set in a town, not unlike Anglesea, at a time in the future following a massive pandemic that has wiped out most of the population. The story is told from the point of view of Finn Morrison, a 16-year-old boy, who is surviving alone amongst the chaos that has resulted from the complete breakdown of law and order. Although he spends most of his time hunting and fishing, Finn still makes time to surf.

Greg Walsh, the Air eys Inlet physiotherapist, conducts exercise classes on Wednesdays at Aireys Community Hall at 9am and 10am, and Fridays at Anglesea Youth Hall at 9am.

Greg suggests that the effects of ageing, such as normal progressive wasting of muscle (sarcopaenia), slower reactions to physical challenges and decreased flexibility of connective tissues, creep up on us surreptitiously. This results in a much greater risk of falls and injuries whilst doing just “normal” everyday tasks as we get older. We need to be proactive to minimise the risks and effects of these natural changes in our physical capacity.

He encourages everyone to look after their future by caring for their physical and mental capacities and making an effort to improve their overall awareness of how their bodies work, how they can remain alert, fit and healthy.

Greg’s main focus is on improving balance, co-ordination, core strength and flexibility. A wide range of exercises involving music and aerobic warm up, balancing activities, balls for co-ordination, resistance bands, mat exercises and Greg's running commentary keeps each group alert and energised during the sessions.

A linear study over five years with previous groups has indicated that although participants did not lose much weight from participation, there was a significant reduction in centimetres around the waist and hips (indicating muscle development) and a large reduction in the number and impact of falls and injuries sustained within the group.

One aspect of participation in the exercises that is often overlooked is the social conduit into the community that 6

Over 55s Stay Fit and Fabulous Senior Citizens’ Classes A slightly more sedate form of exercise is offered by Alex Biewer at the Anglesea Senior Citizens' Hall on Wednesday mornings. Alex aims to keep people moving, exercise eyes, brains and bodies, and like Greg, she focuses on core stability, muscle strength and preventing falls. The group covers people from 61 - 90 years of age, so it is never too early or too late to join. They are slightly less vigorous than Greg's group, and spend part of their exercise time sitting down - but they do keep moving. Members use balls, balloons, fly swats and cups to help them stay active and alert, and they enjoy dancing and music.

The sessions seem to involve a lot of fun and laughter, plenty of give and take as some members are more able than others, and an eagerness from Alex to ensure that everyone is involved according to their ability or energy on a given day.

Anglesea Active Adults In conjunction with Leisure Networks in Geelong, Anglesea Active Adults provides activities for all levels of fitness, with programs arranged each school term that cover a wide range of

the group, is most grateful to the Anglesea Football and Netball Clubs, YMCA and the Golf Club for use of their facilities, which allow tai chi, archery, pilates, boxing, strength training, and golf to fill the program.

They also use Coogoorah Park for pole walking and walking soccer, enjoying the fresh air as well as the exercise.

Exercises can be modified as required, so everyone is able to take part.

Anglesea Day Program

I was quite unsure what to expect when I knocked on the door of this facility as I had no idea what happened here, who was involved, or what range of activities there might be.

The building is slightly tucked away and I had barely noticed it before. I was warmly welcomed by Michael Forkgen, acting manager, who showed me around while the residents were enjoying a beautiful roast dinner, and then invited me to make myself familiar with all that was happening.

Through Barwon Health, this program offers ongoing respite care and socialisation for those in our community who are suffering from various medical conditions including stroke, memory loss and Parkinson's disease, as well as offering respite for carers and partners who may need time just for themselves.

Voluntary drivers collect participants from their homes in Anglesea and Torquay and take them home safely in the afternoon.

The centre is open at the Barwon Health facility in the Anglesea Community Hub precinct on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week.

Michael says that they are able to take up to 10 clients each day.

Mornings begin with a chat and cuppa, then newspaper reading from the Geelong Advertiser and Herald Sun followed by low impact exercises.

For a fine day there is ample comfortable seating for clients to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine outside. A three-course meal is provided at lunch time and, once a month, lunch is available at the Golf Club.

After lunch activities may include bingo, cards, DVDs, carpet bowls, quizzes, and scrabble. Birthdays are always celebrated together, footy tipping becomes an important winter discussion, a lotto game provides some expectation and excitement and the beautiful fish tank is a focus for interest.

The process for new clients involves a phone call to the centre (T: 4215 6721) and referral from either the doctor, case worker, social worker or Shire health department.

Some clients come three days per week, others as required, all of which is negotiable. This program offers a valuable service to those in our community who may be finding it difficult to be at home all day, and for those who care for them.

ANGAIR Wildflower & Art Show Set for another Award-Winning Weekend

Chris Morrissey can’t remember exactly how long she’s been one of the coordinators of the ANGAIR Wildflower and Art Weekend because the show has been part of her September schedule since the early 1990s.

The ANGAIR Wildflower and Art Weekend — which last year won the Surf Coast Shire’s Community Event of the Year award — returns to the Anglesea community precinct in McMillan Street on the weekend of 1718 September.

Chris’s favourite part of the show remains the wildflower walks where visitors in small groups go out with local guides to discover the flowers and plants that make the Surf Coast’s biodiversity particularly special.

It was the late Mary D. White, whose dedication to the local environment and its preservation was a driving force during the early days of ANGAIR, who first taught Chris how to learn about flora and fauna of the bush and heathlands.

“She told me to look up, look down, touch, see the shapes and feel the textures of the plants,” Chris remembers. Birds in the sky; insects, lizards and tiny orchids and mosses on the ground.

The main aim of the ANGAIR weekend is educational fun, Chris says.

“It’s to teach us what’s around us, what makes Anglesea, what is Anglesea.”

If the walks introduce visitors to the delights of individual plants growing in situ, the spectacular displays of wildflowers arranged in the Memorial Hall show just how much floral variety is indigenous to the region.

One new educational attraction this year demonstrates a different, darker, side of the local environment. The Country Fire Authority will be on hand to show young visitors how to play the life-saving Fire Game. Children can also get up close and personal with live snakes and lizards in the Roaming Reptiles exhibit.

Visitors can buy indigenous plants or swap up to five invasive weeds for five free plants.

They can buy a nature-themed art work and gift cards at the art and craft show or a second-hand natural history book in the main hall.

Local environment organisations will showcase their activities, and refreshments —including the Anglesea Primary School’s sausage sizzle — will be available.

It looks like another award-winning weekend!

Lots to Love About Winter in Aireys

With winter finally upon us, thoughts turn to cosy fires, better surf and fewer crowds. It’s a great time to be on the coast … especially if you’re anywhere near Aireys Inlet.

The annual Love Winter in Aireys festival is underway, with a record 24 events on the program, providing a great array of entertainment for Surf Coast locals and visitors every week throughout winter.

From the intimate ‘Danny Spooner Afternoon House Concert’ at Cimarron and the highly anticipated ‘Wintersong’ at the Aireys Pub, to a local tennis tournament and yoga workshops, the Love Winter in Aireys festival presents community events across a wide range of genres.

Festival coordinator Anne Dansick is thrilled with the number and range of events scheduled this winter and is confident there is something on the program for everyone.

Enjoy an ‘Express Tour’ to the top of the Split Point Lighthouse.

“Whether you like to sing, dance, eat, play or just sit back and take it all in, you’re bound to find an event that appeals,” said Anne.

This year’s extensive program features a range of literary events, wellbeing workshops, live music, art, trivia nights at Truffles and a family movie night at the pub.

Lots to Love About Winter in Aireys will present two engaging events on this year’s program during July, including the very popular ‘Aireysistible’ extravaganza evening of music, dance and food, and a refugee author event with Abdi Aden discussing “Shining: The Story of a Lucky Man” at Great Escape Books.

Key organiser of ‘Aireysistible’ Nelson Estrella, performs with virtuoso erhu musician Shen Pinging, who is returning this year to ‘wow’ crowds on his traditional Chinese instrument.

Great Escape Books will also host its first ever ‘Grand Poetry Slam’ to celebrate National Bookshop Day in August.

Headlining with Dr Robyn Rowland AO, a poet of national recognition with nine volumes of poetry, guests can join in a celebration of local poetry … where you get to hear poetry read aloud by both well-established and budding poets.

Down-sizing: Taking Stock of your Future Living Needs

Roughly 20 percent of all Australians today have a longterm disability according to the latest government data. As we age, many of us find that we can no longer do simple things as easily as we used to.

4. Light switches need to be correctly placed and preferably the kind that may be simply touched to turn on or off.

Many of my friends are looking to down-size their houses because of this.

The garden is too much to manage, the stairs and the cleaning of a fourbedroom house takes too much time, and the space needed for two people to comfortably live is much smaller than the house they live in that once catered for children but now has just occasional visitors.

I am also thinking carefully about the future and what I want to do when I take the next step and whether I want to down-size.

There is much to consider.

Whether to move is the first thing to deal with. Living in a beachside town was fabulous when young but for many has lost the edge it once had.

Perhaps a move to a larger town with more accessible shopping and easier-toreach medical help would be a good idea. But there are those who could not bear the idea of moving away from friends and social networks so will find somewhere else to live that is close to where they are right now. Staying put also has the advantage of being the cheapest option. Even retro-fitting an existing house is not as expensive as selling and moving.

Fortunately, these days there is a lot of help available to assist you if you are considering a move, a new build or retro-fitting your existing house. The internet is a great tool to help.

The Australian Government offers a very useful website at www.yourhome.gov.au where you can read about building a sustainable and adaptable home.

5. Wet areas such as toilets, laundries and bathrooms require non-slip floors and sufficient room to cater for a wheelchair or a trolley to carry the laundry.

The entry should provide a level sheltered landing that is dimensioned for wheelchair manoeuverability and is adequately lit for visibility from inside the home.

Then there are private companies such as DDA Design at www.ddadesign.com.au, where you will find a very thorough coverage of all aspects of building or retro-fitting elements of house designs for those with any kind of disability, or for those with the foresight to plan for the future and what it may bring.

6. Handrails may also be something to consider in bathrooms, showers and toilets. This is where the professional advice of an Occupational Therapist (OT) is invaluable. You can find a local OT at your community Health Centre, by asking your doctor, or in the Yellow Pages.

A brief overview is worth considering to understand what needs planning and thinking through.

7. Rather than move house because the stairs are becoming too difficult to manage, you could install a stair-lift.

Those with a stairway that is straight will have an easier and cheaper stair-lift installed than those with curved stairs or with several landings. An OT may also help you to obtain funding to cover some costs if you are eligible.

1. Doorways and handles â&#x20AC;&#x201C; flat handles that can be easily grasped, even elbowed open are worth installing.

Doors should be at least 850 mm wide to cater for wheelchairs.

Opening doors while seated in a wheelchair also requires space around them.

8. Your garden may need some attention too. Good flat surfaces to walk on, easily accessible paths and even raised garden beds are all things that can make your garden attractive and easy to use. There are many local landscape gardeners willing to talk with you about your needs and what you want done.

Refugee Group Working for an Irresistible Cause

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor,” said Desmond Tutu. It was with this thought in mind that a group of people at Aireys Inlet came together two years ago to revive the local Rural Australians for Refugees.

With many people on the Surf Coast incensed at the current treatment of asylum seekers and refugees, the group’s membership list has grown to 168 individuals with about 30 active members.

Aireys Inlet Rural Australians for Refugees (AIRAR) works closely with the Surf Coast RAR, based in Torquay, and is very proud to live in a Shire that has declared itself a ‘Refugee Welcome Zone’.

To make best use of members’ talents and interests, the group established working parties, including the ‘Letter Writing Team’, ‘Events Team’ and ‘Refugee Liaison Team’.

after four years found his way to Christmas Island, from where he was transferred to Manus Island, where he is now in his third year of indefinite detention.

The Letter Writing Team produces templates of letters for members to forward to politicians expressing concern on specific issues and urging change. They have also established correspondence with refugees currently in off-shore detention.

Boosted by the gesture of friendship from our member, this young man has shown remarkable resilience, but the recent uncertainty surrounding the future of Manus Island has almost taken him to breaking point.

One member exchanges emails regularly with a young Rohingyan man who fled Myanmar at the age of 16 to avoid ongoing persecution and possible death.

The Events Team runs a stall at the Aireys Inlet Market, speaker events and fundraisers.

The group has invited Somalian refugee Abdi Aden to speak about his book Shining: The Story of a Lucky Man, at an event in July, as part of this year’s Love Winter in Aireys festival.

The organisers are promising a highly entertaining evening of multicultural music, song and dance along with some fine food and wine.

Refugee Group Working for an Irresistible Cause speaker, lawyer and human rights and refugee advocate, Julian Burnside.

The proceeds of all fundraising events are quickly distributed to situations of great need.

The group has donated money for uniforms and books for refugee students at the Geelong North Secondary College and supported their after-school homework program.

Money has assisted local refugee families living below the poverty line.

Despite the many rumours you hear, asylum seekers living in the community receive 89 percent of the Centrelink Newstart Benefit and out of this they have to pay rent on the open market and all other living expenses.

Recently the group has been supporting local refugees with the translation and legal expenses associated with completing the 60-page-long applications for Temporary Protection Visas.

These are costs that are essential for the success of their applications but quite out of their reach.

Aireys Inlet RAR recently hosted a ‘Day of Welcome’, which included surfing, for a group of 15 asylum seekers.

Refugee Liaison The Refugee Liaison Team has forged links with some members of the large asylum seeker and refugee population in Geelong.

With funding support from the Surf Coast Anglican Church and the Anglesea Lions Club, AIRAR hosted a ‘Day of Welcome’ for a group of 15 asylum seekers.

They enjoyed a day out canoeing on the river, surfing and horse riding - new experiences for the young men from Iraq, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

LOCAL PROFILE: ROBBIE SEEGAR AND JAN AUSTIN

Aireys Locals for 40 Years

Aireys Inlet locals Robbie Seeger and Jan Austin have been living here for some 40 years. Jan’s parents met at Queenscliff High School when her mum began her first teaching appointment and met the handsome Headmaster.

They were soon married and moved to Melbourne to live and raise a family.

Jan’s dad eventually left teaching at high schools to go to work at Melbourne University where he became a Professor of Education and Dean of Education. There he became friends with Gaye Tennent. Gaye had built a holiday house at Fairhaven in 1946. It was built on the sand dunes near the Lifesaving Club. Eventually Jan’s parents purchased the house as their holiday escape.

Jan moved there to live in the mid1970s.

It was a different community in those days. The Aireys school was threatened with closure as there were only five pupils. When a large family moved in to town, the school continued.

Melbourne, so spent many hours commuting and setting off to work from Aireys Inlet at 4am only to return late in the evening.

Eventually he saw the light and shifted his business to Aireys Inlet as well. He has been operating his trucks and earthmoving machinery here since the 1980s.

Jan and Robbie met at the Aireys Pub in 1991. They soon discovered that they shared a very similar background.

They lived in the same suburb in Melbourne and even went to the same primary school - three grades apart. Jan was warned about Robbie. Her Mum told her to keep away from that Robbie Seeger. She didn’t listen.

Today there are 200 or so primary school children between Aireys Inlet and Lorne, so there has been a great change. Jan and two other women were the only young women in town when she first came. Now there are many young families as well as second and third generation locals. However, she points out that with the high rentals and the cost of buying a house, Birregurra is now called “North Aireys Inlet” by those who want to live in Aireys Inlet but can’t afford it.

Robbie had a block of land that he purchased around 1977 for $8,000.

After his decision to sell up in Melbourne, he first moved to Aireys and lived for a time in a caravan on the site. Later he trucked in a house and set up his home overlooking the Painkalac Creek valley. He still ran his trucking and earth-moving business in 16

LOCAL PROFILE: ROBBIE SEEGAR AND JAN AUSTIN Jan, like most who wish to live in a small rural community, worked in a variety of jobs. She worked at the Lorne Hotel, the Aireys Inlet Pub, did some cleaning and other work and then for a decade or so at the Aireys Inlet General Store.

Joyce and Gordon Brown owned the store at that time. They too were from the Heidleberg/Rosanna part of Melbourne, from which Robbie and Jan came. She tells me that she made friends with the Brown family and enjoyed working with them.

The Ash Wednesday fire of 1983 was a big event that changed the town. Jan’s employers, the Brown family, were burnt out in the fire. Jan took some of them in to live with her for a while. She remains friends with Joyce Brown and her children still catch up with them.

Robbie tells me that he is in the business of digging holes, and then filling them in. Earth-moving equipment and the trucks that accompany the work are physically big. Robbie is not.

Yet he digs house foundations, levels gardens, excavates sites for farming or puts in driveways and roads. He is also a “powder monkey” handling explosives for the preparation of the foundations of various types of constructions.

A branch of this work is to handle fireworks and safely put on displays for a range of celebrations. He tells me that he has set up fireworks displays for many locals celebrating their weddings or other occasions.

Robbie is winding down the earth-moving and explosives side of things these days and has established a new business.

He now supplies Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven and Anglesea residents with bottled gas. He does same-day deliveries from Aireys Inlet. You can get your gas delivered by Robbie himself by calling Aireys Gas on 0407 453 065.

While he hints that retirement is not far away, I notice that the tools of his trade, the big truck and equipment remain outside waiting for just one more job.

A conversation with AIDA President, Charlotte Allen

The Aireys Inlet and District Association has grown from a small group of local people opposed to the development of a caravan park on the Painkalac river flats in 1965, to an almost 400-member organisation today. summer and muddy potholes in winter.

Others appreciate that gravel roads slow cars, invite pedestrian access, permit natural drainage and lend a lowkey character to the area. There may not be a solution to this divide.

However, AIDA will continue to survey members and support the decision of the majority.

Members are ratepayers and residents who share a love of the district which spans from Eastern View to Urquharts Bluff.

Charlotte Allen is the President of AIDA and says that maintaining the coastal village character of the area is the main task of AIDA. This takes a lot of work and constant vigilance, with the members being the first strength of AIDA in helping to achieve its aims. All kinds of people join AIDA, but some very talented and capable members provide their skills in areas such as science and the environment, architecture and planning to advance AIDA’s cause.

A second key strength is that the membership and the wider community are surveyed from time to time to give the organisation a good understanding about what matters to the community.

The most recent survey of members was done in 2015.

When you consider what elements constitute a ‘coastal village character’ you realise how difficult it is to describe and how easy it is to follow simple formats that could be restrictive. When you get development with little community discussion the ‘character overlay’ is important, for it frames any debate of what is appropriate or not.

The new Fairhaven underpass is a case in point where the outcome does not conform to the character of a coastal village. Simply at a glance, it is a solution more in tune with a big city.

AIDA is already working with VicRoads, the Shire and Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club about the visual impact of the underpass and it has the tools and support to gain an improvement in line with local sentiment.

The surveys give AIDA a voice that is heard by the Shire at Council meetings, during policy development and in discussions with other agencies.

The recent Structure Plan is a good example of how AIDA works. The consultants that the Shire used spoke with many local people from all age groups, and with various interests, and also a range of groups from the local area. The conversations with AIDA had a degree of depth to them because the ideas of what the community wanted in relation to its built and natural environment had been gathered and were being put forward. The new Structure Plan has responded well to AIDA’s inputs and the database that supports its ideas. It’s hard to imagine how Aireys Inlet would have retained 18

AIDA: The Painkalac Valley Project The Painkalac Valley in Aireys Inlet is a defining feature of this part of the Great Ocean Road. AIDA surveys show respondents have a deep attachment to the valley, with over 75 percent opposed to development on it.

The privately-owned valley land is currently for sale. AIDA members were concerned about what the future of the valley would be and started thinking whether it may be possible to purchase the land through a public fund raising campaign and hold it in public ownership.

The aim would be to protect its values in perpetuity and gradually return its wetlands to their natural state.

This would need to be a broad-based community campaign, so AIDA and ANGAIR committees have been meeting to discuss the possibilities and how to proceed.

The issues are complex and a new incorporated association, The Painkalac Project has been formed to carry the project forward.

AIDA members are concerned about future development on the Painkalac Valley .

A haunting painting of a young girl painted by a little known 16th century Dutch artist vanishes during the evening.

Switching to the 16th century, we meet Sara de Vos, an artist of some note, who is struggling to cope with the abandonment of her husband and admittance into the prestigious Dutch Artist's Guild - which did in real life admit women.

Another layer is woven into the tale, as we meet Australian Ellie Shipley, who as a struggling art student makes the fatal error of copying the painting years before. Many years later she is the curator of an exhibition of female Dutch artists … to tell more would be to give the story away.

It's an inspiring, intelligent read.

The novel opens in an ex-brothel, now a grotty one-star hotel, and features a homeless hotel receptionist who is quite keen on not being murdered, a brutal convicted criminal out for hire, and a highly entrepreneurial female priest, who has not only lost her religion, but doubts she ever had it in the first place. Just what does this unlikely threesome have in common? Only access to a small fortune - 5000 kronor to be exact. A fantastically madcap adventure ensures.

The Light on the Water takes us on every parent's nightmare - the loss of a child and, worse, not knowing where she is.

Anne's life has spectacularly crashed with loss, blame, self-loathing and eventually some light and redemption. Sounds awful but actually it is a beautiful read, the landscape of Wilson's Promontory is vivid and the beaches and walking trails bring back memories of this special place.

The Light on the Water reminds me of other innocent people battling very public concepts.

Bike Time

The weather has turned, thermals are out, gloves are on, rain jackets ready. Winter on the bike can be tough, no I mean IS tough. But as we know, once you get out it is always worth it.

Never have I gone out and wish I hadn’t. Except maybe that one time I rode to Ballarat with good friend Mark Purdi, who just happens to be a scratch rider. One wrong turn, one almighty head wind and one underdone rider, me. “Gee Simon, “ he says with a fairly disgusted look, “What’s wrong mate?” Whatever dude.

Now down to local matters. Last issue, we touched on the bike park and how it has had a recent upgrade, which has been carbon fibre fantastic. The park is managed by a clandestine group of locals who go by the code name “bike park committee”.

I met one of these guys on a quiet, restless sort of day, the wind massaging my beard. Ari (oops) has been involved since day one, and has worked with the Surf Coast Shire and Alcoa who own the land over the years, bringing endless joy and broken limbs to many.

But now we find ourselves in uncertain times, with more wind blowing my beard. You see the mine has closed, and the landlords may be wanting their land back. Or maybe not.

Or maybe this an opportunity to move the park to tie in with other exciting adventure type activities at the actual mine site. Behind closed doors (as I write this) there are secret meetings and very high level discussions going on, cups of tea sipped and biscuits dunked. Positive vibes are emerging through the cracks. All involved love to ride.

Re(ve)lations – the new production from Anglesea Performing Arts

Based in Anglesea, Anglesea Performing Arts Inc (APA) is an award-winning Theatre Company that has provided entertaining community theatre, for more than 30 years.

Early productions were usually musicals, but in more recent years the company has focussed on creating and presenting thought-provoking, cutting edge contemporary theatre.

The change in direction was spear-headed by Iris WalsheHowling, who joined APA in 2003, after relocating to the Surf Coast from Melbourne, where she was involved in the independent theatre scene, being a founding member of the innovative La Mama Theatre Company.

With actor/director Walshe-Howling at the helm, APA has developed a reputation for producing high quality, visionary work.

It now comprises a group of passionate, dedicated and talented directors, actors, choreographers, musicians, playwrights and technicians drawn from across the Surf Coast and beyond.

They have garnered a swag of nominations and awards for productions such as Picnic at Hanging Rock, All Souls and The Rain.

After successful seasons in Anglesea, APA productions have often toured to venues in other coastal towns as well as venues in Geelong and Melbourne.

Re(ve)lations Currently rehearsing Re(ve)lations, APA will bring together plays by internationally acclaimed American playwright, Neil LaBute, as well as local playwright and APA actor, Mel Chapman.

The LaBute play, Some Girls, will be directed by Iris Walshe-Howling, while Geelong-based actor and director Janine McKenzie will direct Chapman’s play, Just Far Enough.

The two one-act plays are connected by themes that emerge in the midst of close relationships. In both plays, characters need to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves and the consequences of choices they have made.

In Some Girls, one man’s attempt to heal relationship damage proves to be even more complicated than he first expected. Set in various hotel rooms, the man meets four exlovers, hoping to clear the air with each of them before his up-coming wedding. Some Girls is a riveting dark comedy, which captures the awkward and amusing dynamics that are created when we fall in and out of love.

Just Far Enough explores the boundaries that are observed and ignored between three friends. Over the years, three neighbours have negotiated the shifting fence-lines that separate their lifestyles, desires and identities. Just Far Enough deals with the moment when one of the neighbours wants out of the ‘hood.

This witty comedy puts under the spotlight friendships that are based on lies, betrayal and a lack of basic respect for personal space!

Anglesea’s One Act Play Festival 27-28 August 2016 For the past 25 years, APA has hosted the Anglesea One Act Play Festival, a popular community event that attracts audiences from across Victoria. This year’s 26th Festival is scheduled for Sat 27 - Sun 28 August 2016 at the Anglesea Memorial Hall.

Entries range from 12-20 short plays over the entire weekend from theatre companies across Victoria. Many local businesses sponsor the festival, as it's a great opportunity to showcase our unique township. Our goal is to enrich the Surf Coast community with arts and culture and welcome any individuals who would like to be a part of this small but dynamic team.

Pilates - Let’s get straight to the ‘core’ of it!

Joseph Pilates Who is it good for?

Joseph Pilates, the creator of Pilates, didn’t pull any punches: commit yourself to practicing Pilates and the rewards are phenomenal.

Pilates is a way of thinking about movement and physical development that encompasses optimal posture, strength, range of movement and movement quality.

History of Pilates Okay, but what IS Pilates and where did it come from?

The exercise system called Pilates was the work of Joseph Pilates back in the early 20th century. As a child, Joseph suffered rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. He set out to develop an exercise that would improve his own health.

Originally known as 'Contrology' but renamed to pay homage to its creator Joseph Pilates, it is a series of exercises performed on various equipment including Reformer and Mat. As laid out in Joseph's book 'Return to Life through Contrology' his primary philosophy is that "physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness".

He designed his exercises to strengthen the core or centre, lengthen the spine, increase body awareness, build muscle tone and gain flexibility.

What is Pilates?

Pilates = Powerhouse, a body boasting strong abdominal and postural muscles to support the skeletal system.

The six principles of Pilates are Concentration, Control, Breath, Flow of Efficiency of Movement, Precision and Centering.

The two most common forms of apparatus for performing Pilates on are a Mat and a Reformer. Huh? A what?

The Pilates Reformer is a piece of equipment invented by Joseph Pilates.

It contains a flat bed (or carriage as it is known) which moves back and forward against resistance. The Reformer also has long straps that can be pulled with arms or legs to move the carriage against the resistance. There is a myriad of exercises you can perform on the Reformer, in fact hundreds of varying exercises. You will LOVE it!

Evidence Based Pilates Pilates has evolved throughout the years and today I practice Evidence Based Pilates.

This is an approach to improving balance, symmetry and quality of movement using methods based on proven results from research and scientific studies. In general terms, the biomechanical principles of evidence based Pilates represent optional movement strategies (what bits go where and when) in various contexts, based on current research.

When a Community Garden is Not the Community’s Garden The Anglesea Community Garden is a beautiful accessible space that has been nurtured by many hard-working members over recent years, creating an abundance of produce for them to share and enjoy.

Unfortunately, it has been pillaged and plundered on so many occasions, members are starting to wonder whether they’ll need to build a high fence with a locked gate, like they have in other community gardens, such as West Geelong or Hawthorn.

Committee member Mandy Mitchell-Taverner writes, on behalf of the Garden Committee (all volunteers), of their concerns for the future of this important community asset.

Anglesea Community Garden, unlike many other such gardens, has no high fence, no barbed wire and no locks on the gate. It sits in the middle of the community and has a welcoming notice and attractive entrance.

Membership is open to all, the fee is minimal ($10 a year), and there is an open attitude to sharing the space and produce for community events as well as to welcoming any new members.

Sadly this seems to mean to some that not only is the space “open to all”, but that the produce is “available to all” - to anyone who would like to pick it.

For the members who have dug, shoveled, moved soil, spread manure, mulched, pruned, planted, weeded and watered over a long period, the removal of the precious produce by nonmembers feels increasingly like theft.

What is the solution?

Is it just that the concept of a communal garden is not understood or is it that some people are simply dishonest and prepared to steal?

The Garden Committee is reluctant to put up tall fences and lock gates - so let us hope that a better understanding of “Community Garden” will stop the disappearance of carefully tended produce. The produce is to be shared by members - not the whole community.

To join the Community of Gardeners, simply fill in a form from the box near the gate, pay your $10 and come along for fun, friendship, food and a sense of wellbeing.

And share in the produce.

The pumpkins are generally pinched before they are ready and therefore not much good to anyone. Ditto the apples - still on the tree to finish ripening.

When many of the pumpkins, most tamarillos and all the apples were recently “harvested” by someone nameless, our tolerant attitude to the loss of a pumpkin here, and a few leaves there, changed to indignation, disappointment, bafflement and sadly, anger.

The Community Garden is a communal asset for those who want to join, work, enjoy and benefit from the many joys of a group endeavour.

Membership cost is minimal (what else can you get for $10 a year?) allowing the sharing of the fruits of everyone’s labour. All the apples disappeared in the week before they were to be picked and shared out. No member took home a single apple.

Anglesea’s Family File

Parker, Noble, Murray, Elizabeth; have you ever wondered how Anglesea streets got their names? It’s not hard to work out that most of the streets are named after some of our pioneer families. Just who are these families?

Some of our older people knew the descendants of these pioneers but their stories are becoming more and more remote. Even families who have descendants still living in the area, know less with each generation. At History House we want to preserve the stories of these families from Anglesea and district.

A Family File Project is being developed at History House. It is a joint project between the Family History Group and the Historical Society. We do have a file of paper articles, but this is just a small section of the information we hold. We are developing an electronic database known as a Family File, on which we aim to record and preserve all the information we have on families who lived or holidayed regularly in Anglesea.

2. Donating information about families. Your family may not have been one of the earliest families that came to Anglesea but in future years your family will be part of Anglesea’s history. Either give us a copy of work already done on your family or put together information and hopefully some photos and give us a copy. It does not have to be a large file; even simple facts will be most welcome.

Help us to preserve Anglesea’s history and make it accessible to everyone. If you need help documenting your family, then call in at our Family History sessions at History House 10.30am - 1.00pm each Tuesday and Saturday during school terms.

In our Family File database we are recording all books, articles, newspaper cuttings, photos etc. so they can be easily accessed when an enquiry is made. However we do need help.

There are two ways you can help us.

1. Entering information into our database and also proof reading the work of others to ensure there are no errors. The more volunteers we have the faster our database will grow. LORNE-AIREYS INLET P-12 COLLEGE: AIREYS INLET CAMPUS

Solar Vehicle Challenge Recently, our Grade 6 students welcomed their counterparts from Lorne Campus, Winchelsea and Deans Marsh to their home turf so that they could all participate in a great day learning about the design and engineering of solar powered vehicles.

The students had access to expertise on solar vehicle design and construction, courtesy of Bannockburn PS, with their students and staff guiding our students through the solar vehicle design process.

The project developed the following skills:  Cooperative and collaborative decision-making  Design and engineering of solar-powered vehicles  Deeper learning about sustainable resources  Understanding of energy, engineering, design and construction parameters  Enhanced social and interpersonal learning.

In small groups, our students energetically tackled the challenge of building a simple solar-powered vehicle!

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK ...

Grade 2 student Harry Noelker made an interesting discovery recently while walking his dog before school along Painkalac Creek. Harry and Pepper came across a Port Jackson Shark that had been washed up on the muddy bank along River Road – quite a distance up stream.

The high tides and seas experienced in the days leading up to their discovery caused the sea to break through into the estuary. The sea broke through late on the Wednesday afternoon, but Harry and Pepper found the shark on the Wednesday morning, making it a bit of a mystery as to how and when the shark got into the river.

The poor chap must have been living in the salt wedge that lies on the bottom of the Painkalac for quite some time. For more information on this mystery, check out FERMS (Friends of Eagle Rock Marine Sanctuary) on Facebook.

F-3 Science In F-3, we have been having a fun time learning about space and our solar system. I have enjoyed learning about the different planets and how each of them is different to earth.

I can’t believe how BIG space really could be.

I think it’s never ending. I really think it’s amazing how all of the planets in our solar system orbit around the sun without crashing into each other.

What I really want to find out about is how black holes are formed, and what happens to things that get sucked into them.

It would be really cool to be an astronaut to find out about these things, but I don’t know if I’d be brave enough or smart enough to do it. I don’t usually get car sick, bus sick or plane sick, but I might get rocket sick.

We went to Scienceworks and visited the Planetarium. We learnt heaps more there.

ANGLESEA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Anglesea Primary School shares bushfire safety lessons Students don’t often get to see what it’s like to be at the front of a classroom. But on 5 May, students from Anglesea Primary School taught a lesson to the state’s leaders in emergency management.

Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley invited the school’s Year 6 students to visit the State Control Centre to show what they had learnt through working with the CFA. Since 2013, students in Years 4, 5 and 6 have met with the CFA every week for a bushfire education program called Survive and Thrive. Last year, the school and CFA were awarded the Victorian Fire Awareness Education Award.

The students learn about past major bushfires, how weather and topography affects fires, the roles of different agencies during fires, and what firefighting strategies were used.

By the time they’re in Year 6, the children develop ways to share their

knowledge with other schools and members of the community.

CFA senior instructor Jamie Mackenzie said teaching the children had increased the community’s fire awareness.

“We wanted kids to have a high understanding of fire behaviour and safety plans,” Mr Mackenzie said.

“We wanted that to influence families.”

At the State Control Centre on 5 May, students split into three groups for creative presentations about fire behaviour, rapid fire monitoring and community decision-making.

CFA had put in a lot of work to create something of significance.

“It is a partnership of speciality,” Mr Lapsley said.

“These things don’t just happen — it takes a lot of hard work.”

Principal Pamela Sandlant said she was very proud of how the students showcased their skills and abilities.

“They are amazing and have a substantial understanding of our community and how it can respond to bushfire,” she said.

TWITCHERS’ CORNER

Little Wattlebird Anthochaera chrysoptera 26 – 31 cm The Little Wattlebird, sometimes called the Brush Wattlebird, is the smallest of the three wattlebirds. The Red Wattlebird is common in our area and the Yellow Wattlebird occurs in Tasmania, King Island and some Bass Strait islands.

The Little Wattlebird has a misleading name as it entirely lacks wattles. It is smaller and more slender than its relatives. In appearance it is generally grey-brown, liberally marked with white streaks. The wings are darker, but similarly streaked. There is a clear chestnut patch in the wings seen in flight. Tail, dark brown, tipped white.

Lighter feathers on the side of the forehead. Underparts generally grey-brown, also streaked with white. Eye colour is blue-grey to brown. Their cryptic colouring makes them difficult to see amongst the foliage. The Little Wattlebird often gives its presence away by its noisy call and habit of chasing other birds. Its calls are typical of wattlebirds – a varied range of harsh, loud notes. The birds perch upright and fling their heads back when calling.

These birds occupy coastal areas and closely associate with banksia woodlands, and coastal heaths. They are also found in eucalypt woodland, thickets, parks and gardens. Here they are commonly seen and heard in the coastal vegetation growing along the cliffs at Anglesea and Aireys Inlet.

The nest is roughly built using twigs, with a lining of bark strips or wool. It is a deep, saucer-shaped nest and is placed in a tree between 1-10 m high. A clutch is normally one or two eggs. In colour, reddish-salmon, with chestnut and purple spots and blotches of odd shapes on the larger end. The nesting season is July to January, but birds will breed outside those times if there is available food.

Flower nectar is an important part of their diet. They will also take insects, sometimes on the wing, as well as fruits and berries.

Garden-to-Table Community Feast

The Anglesea Memorial Hall looked a treat after its recent spruce up. The polished timber floor and newly painted walls set off the cascade of brightly coloured Chinese lanterns adorning the walls.

Recipe: Jemma Lewis’ Cannellini Bean Dip

A dozen tables were spread in ordered fashion across the hall, each laid with ironed white table cloths and set for eight people with table and wine glasses, cutlery, crockery, bottles of wine and a bright spray of flowers.

1 large eggplant

In the kitchen, local chef Jemma Lewis and her crew had been preparing the feast for over 10 hours. It was all ready and waiting the arrival of the 80 guests.

Organised by the Anglesea Community House with the assistance of members from the Anglesea Community Garden, the event was part of the Shire-wide Eat Local Month. A Shire grant was used to fund the night and keep prices manageable. Sarah Bolus organised the month-long festival but this one was purely Anglesea and Aireys Inlet run.

Ingredients 1 tin cannellini beans 1 small tin tuna 1 clove garlic (chopped) 2 teaspoons fennel seeds 250 ml sour cream 2 teaspoons capers Juice of 1 lemon Salt and pepper Method 1.Slice eggplant in half, brush with oil and bake until soft. Allow to cool before scraping all the flesh into a food processor and blending until smooth.

2.Dry roast the fennel seeds and add to the food processor with the tuna, capers, beans, garlic and seasoning – process until smooth.

3.Turn into a bowl and add the sour cream, taste and adjust for seasoning.

Guests enjoyed a fabulous feast at Anglesea’s celebration of local food and community.

Meanwhile, in the Anglesea Community Garden, the ticket holders were busy sipping their glasses of bubbly and eating the dips and other nibbles fresh from the kitchen. The bean dip was fab according to the diners so the recipe is included here.

The night was to be a feast of locally sourced produce, a celebration of eating local food and drinking locally grown and made wine. By 6.30pm the garden visitors began to drift into the hall.

The feast began with freshly baked lavosh bread accompanied by olives, and three dips. Served in the community garden, the nibbles were accompanied by a glass of bubbly.

When the guests reached the hall they sat down to eat frittata, roasted lamb and local vegetables, pumpkin masala, Asian duck salad, lamb shank and

barley salad, all small serves, but a plate filling meal. More Dinny Goonan wines were on the table to taste with the food. Then for dessert we had apple cake and a range of cheeses from Apostle Whey and Moriac Farmstead Dairy.

Tickets cost $12. But it was the work of the volunteers and the Community House that made this night so special.

Alex Leknius, the coordinator, lead a team of helpers from the Anglesea Community Garden, hired serving and kitchen staff and kept the operation to schedule.

On entry they were greeted by the band Mountain Grey, with the singer/ harmonica player on stage laying down a sweet blues-tinged sound track.

The volunteers remained long after the feast was over to sweep, wash, polish and pack away before turning the lights out and heading home. Thank you to all.

The music would continue through the evening lending a festive air to this celebration of local food and community.

What an exhibition of community.

There are lots of things happening in the Anglesea Ward and in the Surf Coast Shire and lots of information available on websites and in the local paper, so I thought I might share one of my passions.

Smart Phone Security

You might know that I love books – I find reading one of the great joys of life. And I also love libraries and our libraries. I represent the Surf Coast Shire on the Geelong Regional Library Board and think that this is one of the best gigs around. I get to hang out regularly under the dome at the new Geelong Library and Heritage Centre and get a special welcome from George in the mobile library when he is in town.

The Library offers some really good services and they are free! A big focus is on eKnow How and in this year of National Digital Inclusion there are a wide range seminars to help you realise the online potential not just of our library but the world wide web generally.

You can order books to pick up from the mobile library online, receive magazines through the library on your device, as well as ebooks and audio books, learn to research shopping, camping, food, ancestry – all manner of things and there are seminars to help you get started. Most of these courses are in Geelong, but I would be really interested to hear from you on what you would like to see locally.

There are also public lectures and author encounters at the new library, and sometimes in other branches. The website grlc.vic.gov.au has all the details, so don’t hold back – you never know where it might take you.

Lastly it would be remiss of my not to mention local author Mark Smith who is about to have his first book published. It is called “The Road to Winter” and is a great read by all accounts. Look out for it in all good book stores – including Great Escape Books.

With phones becoming such an extension of the self, much of our existence is stored on them.

Some effort is needed to make sure your life is not being over-shared with apps or services you have installed.

Your iPhone keeps a lot of your personal information. If you’re oblivious to what it is storing and with whom it is sharing, this with can result in a loss of your privacy.

Many apps force you to allow access on your phone to various data before you can install them.

Things like your location, web browsing history and even your photos can be accessed by different apps. Knowing how to limit this access can help you maintain the security of your information.

A couple of examples: The safari app keeps login details and passwords you often use so you don’t need to put them in every time. Time saving but possibly dangerous if this gets into the wrong hands (kids I’m talking to you!). Go to settings> safari> Auto-Fill or Passwords and have a look.

Other apps have individual places where their own settings are stored. Just signing in to Facebook can download your Facebook friends to your contacts as well as syncing Facebook events to your calendar. Handy for some people but not ideal for others - do you really want all your 695 Facebook friends in your contacts?

Any app that has access to your photos (Instagram for example) could also know both when and where they were taken.

So go to your settings and check what access you’ve allowed. Change your permissions if need be and take control of your privacy.

TV Solution A big thank you to Tom Radtke for sharing his findings on the cause of the problems with our TV reception. Hopefully we can soon be given a frequency that no other area is using. It's not a new problem - back in the 80s, in Torquay, we had programs from Devonport superimposed on our screens in summertime.

Super Service Isn't it nice that the IGA has re-arranged the whole supermarket so that all the senior cits now have more exercise walking around in order to find their favourite products? We also need improved memory levels to remember where everything is now located. I suggested that they employ escorts to guide us around until we're all fully fledged.

A new billboard trailer will be used to promote surf safety and warn visitors of local dangerous conditions.

Culinary Genius

'Little' Evelyn at the Lions Village is fast approaching her transformation into a centenarian, but her tea cakes are still heavenly. She gave me one at the time of my 75th birthday, and my son and two granddaughters are now fans of her culinary skills. They are eagerly looking forward to my next birthday.

Over the past 15 years we have had 15 drownings on our Surf Coast beaches. In the middle of 2015, a surf safety group was formed to look at long-term and short-term strategies around how we could improve our communication and safety awareness at our beaches.

Wildlife Gossip There's a raven called Claude (the Crow) that resides down near the bridge; and he's a bit of a two-timer - he has a wife on both sides of the river! There's also been an echidna mooching around the servo and riverbank area . . . but my informant tells me he doesn't know the name of the prickly pedestrian.

Off With Their Heads!

If you haven't done so already, it's time to behead all the dead agapanthus blooms to stop the birds transporting the seeds into our bushland where these invasive plants can take hold.

Moving Memories The gales battering Anglesea as I write this reminded me of the good old days when the Anglesea Entertainers had a props shed but no permanent land to put it on, so members volunteered to host the tin shed in their yards. Every time there was a stiff breeze it would blow down and a strong wind would make it air-borne. When all the pieces were gathered up and our stuff retrieved from some strange places the shed would move on to a new location. Eventually we acquired a shipping container behind the hall. That never blew over!

Victoria Police, Surf Life Saving Victoria and the Surf Coast Shire have partnered with the Bendigo Bank, Anglesea and the Zone 6 Lions Clubs. Lions and the Bendigo Bank have financed a trailer to promote surf safety and warn our visitors of the local dangerous conditions. Next summer it will feature at our dangerous beaches.

One of the benefits of the trailer is that the banners can be removed and it can be utilised for other safety messages and community purposes.

Residential Burglaries In the past month we have addressed the increase in residential burglaries with some significant arrests in Geelong and some proactive initiatives.

Our colleagues at the High Volume Crime Unit at Geelong have made some significant arrests and we continue to be as active as possible with our general patrols. As a community and as business owners we need to remain focused on improving the security around our valuables and properties.

This extends to our vehicles: whether parked inside the property or parked outside, they should be locked at all times and valuables kept out of sight. We are now performing duties on nightshift across the Surf Coast so if you see or hear anything suspicious no matter what time of the day we need you to call 000 so we can respond.

My First Job

I passed the house next to the old dairy recently and admired the smart new fence and gate. It wasn’t always a residence. Originally the old ice works, it has had a few incarnations since.

aquatic life. I wasn’t precious about the gutting but I drew the line at the bait. If it was required by a customer I would ask him to come through to the cool room and help himself – I wasn’t touching it!

In the late 60s my father ran it as a fish shop over the summer. It was my first job. I was 12.

We sold full, half blocks or crushed ice. The ice crusher was a rattling old iron dinosaur of a contraption. I would have to break off chunks of ice with an ice pick and hammer and toss it into a feeder at the top. The racket it made would wake the dead.

The fish was caught by Ronnie Evans who moored his boat off Anglesea back beach behind the caravan park.

The crays were supplied by the Porter brothers from Point Roadknight.

After their shift out on the water, the fishermen would drive up to the shop front with their tinnies in tow. Dad would buy the fish right off the boat and load it straight into the cool room.

The crays would go out the back to be cooked in an old copper – the kind used before washing machines. I think it had a gas flame underneath – can’t remember Dad lighting a fire under it!

Most days the copper was full to the brim with crays and they had to be covered with water and a few cups of salt. Just before they came to the boil – when the froth appeared on the surface - the heat was turned off and the water drained away.

Dad taught me how to siphon off the water with a garden hose – a process that fascinated me; how water could travel UP the hose and drain away. The crays were unloaded and placed in rows on a rusty old iron bed where they were hosed off to cool down.

Before they went into stock, I had to measure them accurately to make sure none were undersized. The fishermen had already done this with a practised

They were measured from a spike on their head to the end of the carapace.

Males could be half an inch longer but now I can’t remember how to tell the difference. They weren’t just the littlies you see these days – some of them were massive!

Dad sharpened his filleting knives on a whetstone, methodically pressing the blade into the stone in one direction until it could shave a patch of his arm clean in one stroke. Although he taught me how to fillet fish, because the knife was so sharp he did most of it himself after I had headed and gutted them.

Depending on the catch of the day we sold parrot fish, couta, flake, schnapper, flathead and whiting. We also sold ice and bait. The bait was disgusting - a big trough of slimy bits of octopus, squid and various unidentifiable species of former

After the preparation was complete Dad would perch on his stool with his Viscount ciggies and a cup of tea, chatting to customers all of whom he knew by name.

At some stage late (or early) afternoon he’d pick up his ciggies and migrate a couple of doors along to swap the cuppas for a frothy or four.

Mum was a wonderful fish cook. We didn’t call it seafood then. She battered the flake, crumbed the whiting and floured the couta … NEVER the other way around.

I remember often tucking in to one of those whopper crays. Dad would dunk chunks, still warm from the pot, in a saucer of vinegar and chase it down with a cold beer. Mum would have a pile of white buttered bread for us kids to make warm cray sandwiches or run off with a “coupla legs” and sit on the porch steps to peel and suck out the salty flesh.

During my interview with her, I could feel the infectious passion that Tracey receives from making travel experiences for her clients as enjoyable and memorable as possible.

Tracey has enjoyed 22 years of experience in the travel industry and booked a wide variety of travel to many different destinations. For 11 years, she owned her own agency in Woodend, providing exciting travel experiences for the residents of Woodend and beyond, many of whom still use her services to book further travel arrangements and plans through her new Anglesea office.

When her children had completed their secondary schooling, Tracey and her husband decided it was time for a "sea change". As frequent holidaymakers to Anglesea, they could not imagine anywhere better to live permanently.

Tracey loves the village atmosphere Anglesea has to offer and the friendly, supportive nature of the community.

She is always thrilled to plan holidays for her rich variety of clients and loves hearing feedback upon their return, which can be very valuable in guiding future planning for other clients.
