Lizattendedseveralrecentcommemorativeeventswherelocalssharedtheirexperiencesofthe devastatingeventsoftheAshWednesdayFiresof1983.
Onthefortiethanniversaryofthe AshWednesdaybushfires,several specialgatheringsinAngleseaand AireysInletwereheldfortownsfolk andvisitorstorecalltheeventsof thosedays.Tohonourthosewhohad foughtthefiressobravely,toshare memoriesandenjoythecomradeship thatfollowedtherecoveryfromthose difficulttimes.
Somuchwassaid,fromtheinspiring storysovividlytoldbytheAnglesea firecaptainatthetime,BillBubb,to thetalesfrompeoplewhotoldof whattheyhaddoneonthebeachthat night.Recollectionsofwhattheytook withthemwhentoldtoleavethearea orgotothebeach,andhowlife changedforeverforsomeresidents. AshWednesday’sbushfireswere shortandharsh.In24hoursorless
theworldherechanged.Firespread withdemonicspeedfromDeans MarshtoAngleseainarushofwind andflames,smokeandfear.Itwasa hotday,peopledidwhattheycould tostaycoolandsafe,butnoone expectedthespeedandintensityof theragingfire.
Whenpeopleinourtownsheard policedrivingbyorderingthemout oftheirhouses–‘Don’tstopand worryaboutwhattotake,justgo,’–somepeoplequicklyheadedfor Geelong.Frightened,withchildrenin tow,notknowingwhereotherfamily membersmightbe,notknowing wheretheyweregoing,whatthey mightreturnto,whethertheirhomes wouldburn,whatwouldbeleft,they headedaway.
Thosewhostayedwereorderedtogo tothebeachanddescribedthe furiousrushingnoiseofthewindand thefire‘likeafreighttrain’onesaid andsheetsofironroofinglandingon thesand,andpeopleyellingand cryingandtalking,andsudden silencesinthefrenziednightair.. Theanimalsandlizardsandcreepy crawliesemergingfromthebushand thefearastheincomingtidereduced theamountofroomontheshore. Loclasremembercarsdrivenintothe sea,andtheexcruciatingheat.People werethirsty,hungryandafraid.Not justafraid,terrified.
Finally,afterhoursofenduring enormousuncertaintyandperil,an all-clearwasannounced.They rememberedthefearofgoinghome.

TheOxfordEnglishdictionarydefinescommunityas“all thepeoplewholiveinaparticulararea,countryetc.”and furtherextendsthisdefinitionto“thefeelingofsharing thingsandbelongingtoagroupintheplacewhereyou live”.
Ithinkwecanallagreethattheseidealsarealiveand thrivingwithinAnglesea–notablythroughtheworkthat theCommunityHousedoesinoursociety.Naturallythen, whentheopportunityaroseformetojointheCommittee andhaveatangibleinputtowardstheorganisationI jumpedatthechance.
Asaparentwhoisluckyenoughtohave4littlepeoplein mylife,thebiggestinputandcontributionIfeelIcan makeistowardsOccasionalCare–Anglesea’sveryown childcareservice.OneachoccasionthatIdropmy childrenoffatOccasionalCareIfeelincrediblyfortunate tohavethewonderfulwomen–ledbyBec-lookingafter thelocalchildren.
Itgivesthemtheopportunitytomeetpeopleandform friendshipsamongthecommunitywhilstprovidingthe beginningsoftheireducationaljourneyinlife.
Ihavetoadmit-howthewonderfulstaffmanagetokeep theattentionofaroomfullof1-5yearoldswhilst reading,playing,havinglunchanddoingsomany activitiesneverceasestoamazeme!SufficetosayIfeel Anglesea.

Whatifthehousewasgone,whatifitwasstillthere?This wasadevastatingevent.Liveswerelost,homeswere incinerated,hopesanddreamsweredestroyed. Andthenasenseofguilt,kickedin.Whyme,whynotme, whatshouldIhavedone,whatcouldIhavedone,what next,whatcanIdoforothers,wherewillIgo,whatcanI do,howdoIfacemyfriends,howdoIhelpthem,what’s next?Theoverridingsenseforthosewhosehomeswere stillintactwasreliefandgratitude,adesiretoassistthose inneed,tomakeituptothemfortheirloss,asenseof‘we canmakethiswork’.Andtheydid.
Therecoveryoperationswereamazing.Thecommunity gatheredaroundandbegantomakethingsworkagain. Amazingamountsoffoodwereproducedandshared, goodsandclothingdonatedbythepublicweremade availabletoanyoneinneed,genuinecareandconcernwas almosttangiblebetweenneighboursandstrangers,deep compassionbetweenpeoplewhomaynothaveeven knownoneanotherthedaybeforebecamethenorm. Storyafterstoryaboundsaboutgooddeeds,generosity, sharingandcaring.Ofcoursethereareafewoddstories aboutlootingandingratitudetoo,buttheyarenotthe storiesthatgodowninhistory.
Manypeopleaffectedlaterfeltasenseofcommunityand belongingtheyhadn’tfeltbefore.Theymetnewpeople, learnttoworktogetherforthecommongood,fostereda newsenseofprideintheirstrengths,supportedone another’sweaknesses.
Forothers,however,thepainremainsevennow.They neverforget.Neverforgetthesenseofhelplessness,the
anxiety,thefear.Withoutaroofovertheirheads,some losttheirsenseofsecurityanddirection,familiesfell apart,andsomeleftthetown.
Somepeopleweresodeeplytraumatisedtheyhavenever returned.Allthiswaswellbeforethedaysoftrauma counselling,emergencyresourceteams,firedanger ratings,governmentassistantpackages,mediawarnings, pressandsocialmediacoverageofemergencyevents. ExceptfortheCFAandfirecrewswhotrainedweeklyin preparationforsummerbushfires,ourStatewaspoorly preparedforsuchdevastation.Attimes,thoseincharge seemedveryslowtoact.
TheoutcomesfromAshWednesdaywerenotallnegative however.Longlastinglegaciesincludedbetterplanning andmanagementofforestareas,saferhouseandbuilding regulations,bushclearance,increasedmembershipof localCFAgroups,andthebondingofcommunities.
TheStateGovernmentofTasmaniaboughtsixhousesin Angleseafortheuseofresidentswhohadlosttheirhomes. Afterthesewerenolongerrequiredandafterextensive workandnegotiation,oneofthesehousesbecamethe AngleseaCommunityHouse,particularlyvitalinthefirst placeasachildcarecentre,nowanimportanthubinin Anglesea.
Asecondlegacyforthetownwasthecreationof
AStarisBorn

Catchingafilmatthelocalhallhascertainlycomealongwayfromtheolddays.Popcorn,icecreams,drinks-alltheextrasyouassociatewithgoingtothepictures,AngleseaMovieClubhas themallandmore.
PremieringwithRedJoaninFebruary,thestarttothe secondyearoftheAngleseaMovieClubexceededall expectationswithmorethan60newmembersregistering and140attendingtheopeningshow.
PatronsstartedenteringtheHallat6pm,tobegreetedby anarrayofbeveragesandaseeminglyendlesssupplyof food.Thesoundofchatterandlaughterincreasedas morepeoplearrivedtoenjoyanhourofsocialization beforetakingtheirseats.Theycontinuedtobetreatedlike VIPguestswithpopcornandice-creamsbeingbrought aroundbysmilinghelpers.Lightsdimmed,conversation diedandtheaudiencesettledbacktoenjoyaquality movieprojectedusinghigh-gradeaudio-visualequipment. Noneofthiswouldbepossiblewithoutthetirelessworkof thecommitteeandtheenthusiasmofthevolunteers. Muchgoesonbeforethedoorsopen:decorationsare arranged,chairsputout,foodheated,popcornprepared andtheaudio-visualsystemtested.Planningforbeverages andfoodstartsevenearlier.
FundraisingtogetSetUp
Afundraiserin2022enabledthepurchaseofafreezer whichiskeptattheHall.Thishassimplifiedmatters considerably,withfoodorganisersbeingabletotake advantageofsalesandbuyinbulk.Itisnomeanfeatto
calculatetheamountoffoodthatwillbeneededto provideallpatronswithadeliciousvarietyofbothhot andcoldfingerfood.
Theyear’smoviesareselectedfromdiscussionbetween committeemembersusinginformationfromFilmVictoria whocollatethe“starratings”.Guestsusethe‘Starbox’ suppliedbyFilmVictoriatoratethemovieastheydepart byputtingatokenintheappropriateslot1-5.
TheMovieClubhadhumblebeginnings.Startingin 2017as“Meetup3230”,agroupofvolunteerswould screenaDVDeachmonthattheBowlingClubfor interestedseniorcitizens. continuedonpage7
Anglesea’sCoogarahPark.Theintenseheatfromthe bushfirescausedpeatalongtherivertocatchfireandit couldnotbeextinguished.LocalCounciltookthedecision tofloodthearea,depositingdirtdugfromwaterchannels ontothepeatsoitcouldn’tcatchfireagain.Todaythe Parkisusedandenjoyedasanatureandrecreation reservebymanylocalsandthousandsofvisitors.
Athirdbenefit–notonlytothelocalarea,buttoall Australiantowns–isthevastimprovementinfire-fighting equipment,trainingandlogistics.Witheachnewbushfire, lessonsarelearntandmethodsofdealingwithnew scenariosareinvestigatedandadopted.
Itmaynottakemuchtotriggeramemoryofthat harrowingtime.Anextremeweatherforecast,hotdry winds,thesmellofsmoke,areminderletterfromtheCFA toreadyyourpropertyforthebushfireseason.Itmightbe justtherealisationthatsummeriscomingthatreignites theanxietyandputsthebodyintohighalertmode.To helpalleviateandreducethestress,theconstantwarning fromtheCFAtoBEPREPARED!shouldbeatthe forefrontofourmindsatalltimes.

Attentiontodetailcontinuedfortheopeningmovieof 2023.RedJoanpatronswereinvitedtowearsomething redtocomplementtheredtableclothsandvasesofred flowersstrategicallyplacedaroundthehall.Awonderful slideshowofworksbylocalphotographersandhistorical shotscourtesyoftheAngleseaHistoricalSociety,ranona loopaspeoplearrivedandmingled.
Stillinitsinfancy,theAngleseaMovieClubhasproven itselftobeanimportantcatalystforcommunity connection,withindividualsfeelingcomfortabletoattend ontheirown,assuredofcompany,laughter,andquality viewing.
AngleseaMovieClubmembershipfor2023is$77which coversteneventsacrosstheyear.Anyenquiriescanbe madebyemailto movieclub@anglesea.org.au AngleseaMovieClubisproudlysupporrtedbythe AngleseaCommunityHouse.
ThecompletionoftheupgradetotheAngleseaMemorial Hallin2021,fundedbygrantsfromtheState Government,ShireCouncilandcommunitycontributions promtedtheideaofafullblownmovieclubintown.A volunteergroupquicklyformedacommitteeand,withthe experienceandassistanceprovidedbytheWinchelsea MovieClub,tookonthetaskofsettingupAnglesea’svery owntheatre.AfterformallyregisteringwithFilmVictoria, andreceivingaCovidRecoveryGrantfromCouncilfor setupcosts,theenthusiasticcommitteebegantoplanthe year’smovies.
Anamazingresponsefromthecommunityresultedin donationsofsignagedesignandproduction,redcarpet, moviepostersandapopcornmachine,aswellasother contributionsfordecorations.
TheMen’sShedevenprovidedassistancemakingbollards forthered-carpetropesmadebyvolunteers.
TheMovieClubopeneditsdoorsinNovember2021, attractinganaverageof80peopleeach monthtothe AngleseaMemorialHall.
Makinguseoftheimprovementsto soundandlightinginfrastructure, windowtreatmentsandthe installationofaprojectorandscreen thatprovidearealcinematic experience,theteamenhancedthe atmospherebytransformingthehall toatheatrewithmoviepostersand propsthemedappropriatelyforthe movie.
Theopeningnightsawasurplusof tartanandawelcomebybagpipesfor thescreeningofRobRoy.Guestsat Rosa’sWeddingweregreetedbya coupleofbridesmaidsastheyentered abeautifullydecoratedhallwhich includedaweddingtableandcake andintrueBollywoodstyle,the screeningofTheBestExotic MarigoldHotelfeaturedlotsof costumeswiththeaudienceeven beingencouragedtojoinaBollywood dancingexhibition.

Imagineleavinginthemiddleofthenightonfootwithyouryoungfamily,indisguise,taking onlywhatyoucancarryonyourback.
Youhaveleftbehindyourmother, father,sistersandbrothers,friends, yourwholelife–alltotryandreach safetyinanothercountry.Ifyoustay, youaresuretobepersecutedand possiblykilled–maybebecauseof yourethnicbackground,your politicalbeliefs,yourreligion,your sexualpreference,ormaybejust becauseyouareawoman.
Suchscenariosarebeingplayedout acrosstheworldandonlyseemtoget worse.AftertheUSmilitary completeditswithdrawalfrom AfghanistaninAugust2021andthe Talibanreturnedtopower,an estimated1.3millionAfghansfledto neighbouringcountries.AfterRussia invadedUkraineinFebruary2022, 5.4millionUkrainianslefthome.By mid-2022,accordingtotheUnitedNationsHigh CommissionforRefugees(UNHCR)therewerearecord 103millionforciblydisplacedpeopleglobally,andmore thanthirty-twomillionrefugees.
Manyoftheserefugeesarelivingincamps–in Bangladesh,Kenya,Jordan,SudanorPakistanandother countries.Allofthemarehopingforabetterfuture somewhereelse,andonefamilyfromarefugeecampwill soonberesettledinAireysInlet,throughtheBringthem Hereproject,akeyinitiativeofAireysInletRural AustraliansforRefugees(AIRAR).
CommunityRefugeeIntegrationand SettlementPilotProgram(CRISP)
BringthemHereisapartoftheCommunityRefugee IntegrationandSettlementPilot(CRISP)program,which hasbeeninspiredbythesuccessfulCanadiancommunity refugeesponsorshipscheme.Thatprogramhasbeen operatinginCanadasincethelate1970s,andhasenabled morethan325,000refugeestobuildanewlifeinCanada, inadditiontothoseresettledunderthegovernmentfundedresettlementprogram.Similarprogramsarenow beingimplementedinmanycountries,includingtheUK, US,NZandIreland.
Thefederalgovernmentstartedtheprograminthis countrylastJulyandisaimingtoresettle1,500refugeesin fouryears.Therefugeesareindiresituations,andthe UNHCRhasidentifiedthemasbeinginurgentneedof resettlement.
Ifeverythinggoestoschedule,BringthemHerewill welcomearefugeefamilyjustafterEaster.TheBring themHereCo-ordinationgroup,togetherwithother AIRARvolunteers,willprovide12monthsofpractical
hands-onsupporttothefamilyfromtheirdateofarrival inAustralia.
TheCo-ordinationgroupismadeupofsixAIRAR memberswhohaveworkedtogetheronrefugeeissuesfor manyyears,includingdirectinvolvementwithrefugees fromGeelongandMelbourne.Thishasincludedhosting weekendvisitsandsocialoutings;supportingarefugee foodbank;participatinginEnglishclassesforrefugees;and hostingcommunityawarenessevents.Thegroupdraws togetheranimpressiverangeofskillsandexperiences fromtheirpreviousworkinglives.Theyincludeteachers ofEnglishasasecondlanguage,aCEOofanot-forprofitorganisation,awelfareworkerspecialisingin financialcounselling,aprimaryschoolprincipal,and educationalconsultants.
FundraisingSuccesses
WhilethefamilywillhaveaccesstoCentrelinksupport andwillbeaimingtogetemploymentassoonaspossible, extrafinancialsupportwillbenecessary.
TheBringthemHerecampaignhasraised$30,000in justovertwomonthstoassistthefamilyintheirfirstyear inAustralia.
Thecampaignhasbeenoverwhelmedbythesupportof thecommunityforitsfundraisingstrategieswhichhave included;aLighthouse500andLighthouse50campaign; averypopularon-lineChristmasraffle;stallsattheAireys Inletmarket,andamusicalsoireefeaturinglocal Fairhavenquartet‘Impromptu’.
AfullyfurnishedhousehasbeensecuredinAireysInlet untilChristmasaswellasacargenerouslydonatedby twolocalpeople.
Thefamilywillsupportedtofindemployment,accessto education,medicalandsocialservices;and familiarisationtothelocalcommunity.Helpingthemto getusedtotheirnewcountryandlivingontheSurf Coastwillbeakeypriority.
Morebroadly,thecommunityhascomeforwardwith manyoffersofassistanceforthefamilywhentheyarrive –suchasinformationaboutschooling,alliedhealthcare, swimminglessons,tradespeopleandgymprograms. Thereisafeelingofoptimismaboutdoingsomething practicaltohelpsmooththetransitionforthisfamily
BringthemhereLaunchEvent
BringthemherewasformallylaunchedonSunday26 March,attheAireysInletCommunityHall.Itwasa greatopportunitytothanksupportersandspeakalittle moreabouttheproject.Everyonewaswarmlywelcomed tothisfreeeventandwewerehappytoshowcasewhata warm,welcomingcommunitywehaveinAireysInlet. Thelaunchwasagreatsuccess,with130people attending.OurlocalcouncillorLibbyStapletonopened theeventwithanAcknowledgementtoCountry,andwe heardfromBlackwithaDash,thechoirfromAireysInlet andtheAngleseaRockChoir.SpecialguestswereShoghig Araboglian,whospokeofherexperienceresettlinghereas aSyrianArmenianrefugee,andherbrotherHagop Araboglian,whoplayedsomeArmeniantraditionalmusic.

TheSurfCoastShire,inpartnershipwiththeVictorian Government,iscurrentlyembarkingontheAireysInlet
AffordableHousingProjectwhichwillmakehousing availabletolowincomeearnersandpeopleonthe VictorianSocialHousingRegister.Thisinitiativefollows theadoption,inJanuary2022oftheSurfCoastShire CouncilAffordableAccommodationActionPlantobuild socialandaffordablehousingonsuitableCouncilowned land.
Thenominatedsiteforthebuildingoftheseunitsis2 FraserDriveAireysInlet.Thissiteislocatednexttothe 3231CommunityGardenandacrosstheroadfromfour existingCouncil-ownedsocialhousingunits.
Theincreasinglyunaffordableregionalhousingmarket hasprovidedtheimpetustorelievelocalhousing pressuresandhousinginsecurityinthearea.Withhigh jobvacancyratesandmanylocalbusinessesandhealth servicesstrugglingtofindstaff,theneedforaffordable housingisurgent.Increasesinhomelessnessinthearea, aswellasrisingrentalcostsandlowrentalvacancyrates haveallcontributedtotheneedtoprioritisethisissue.
AccordingtoHomesVictoria(June2022),thereareover 600peopleonthewaitinglistforsocialhousinginthe Anglesea-AireysInletdistrict,sothisinitiativeisa welcomesmallsteptowardsacknowledgingand addressingthehousingcrisisthatexistshere.
CommunityEngagement
Thisprojectisbuiltonafoundationofcollaborationand cooperationbetweendifferentlevelsofgovernmentand withinputfromthelocalcommunity.
Inmid2022theCouncilembarkedonacommunity engagementprocessdesignedtoseekviewsandideas aroundthisproposal.Theprocesscomprisedanonline survey,popupinformationandengagementsessionsand a‘DesignInWorkshop’involvingcommunitymembers andSurfCoastShirestaff.
ResultsofCommunityEngagement Activities
Respondentstothesurveyidentifiedanumberofissues importanttothesuccessofthisproposal.
Overwhelminglythesurveyshowedsupportforthe project,howeverlackofinfrastructuretosupportpeople livinginthedevelopmentwasraisedasaconcern,aswas whetherthedevelopmentwouldbesuitableforsingle people,olderpeopleorpeoplewithadisability.Other barriersidentifiedweremainlyrelatedtoplanning requirementsandsiteconstraints,aswellascommunity preferencesinfluencingthenumberofproposalsfrom registeredhousingagencies.

architecturallydesignedresidentialdevelopmentbuiltto thehighestpossibleenvironmentalstandard7+star.These designrequirementsmaybedevelopedaspartof Victoria’sBigHousingBuildandwillbesubjecttomore stringentguidelinesthanprivatedevelopments.Itis expectedthatthedesignwillacknowledgetheunique characterofthecoastalhamletbothenvironmentally,and intermsofthesocialandheritagevaluesofthe neighbourhood.
TheNextPhase
Tencommunitymemberswithexpertiseindesign, building,livedexperienceinsocialandaffordablehousing andlocalresidentswillforma CommunityAdvisory Grouptoshepherdtheprojectthroughthenextphase. Anindependentfacilitatorwillbringtogetherthe CommunityAdvisoryGroupoveranumberofsessions betweenMarch–June2023.TheGroupwillworkwiththe registeredhousingagency'sarchitectsanddevelopersto buildconsensusonanarchitecturallyresolveddesign concept.
Additionalconsiderationswillincludefindingsfromthe firstphaseofthecommunityengagementprocess, traditionalownerculturalknowledgeandunderstanding ofcommunity,inputfromotherrelevantexperts,site considerationsandrelevantregulationsandevidenceof bestpractice.

Whilsttravellingoverseas,Rachaelwasstrugglingwith mentalillness.Asurfinstructor,atthehostelwhereshe wasstaying,encouragedRachaeltotrysurfing,sayingit wouldmakeherhappy.Shehadafewlessonsandwas hooked.Surfingbecamealifesaverforher.Itwashed awayanynegativeself-talkandreducedthe‘chatter’in herhead.
Withqualificationsinyouthwork,homelessness,drugand alcoholaddictionandmentalhealth,Rachaelstressesthe importanceofbuildingconnectedness,confidence, friendships,andengagementandtheneedforearly interventioninyouthmentalhealth.‘Surftherapyisabout buildingcommunity,’shesays.‘Werecognisethatevery youngpersonisdifferentandrespondstochallenges differently,butwiththerightassistanceandsupport,they candoit.’
‘OceanMindiscommittedtodevelopingevidence-based programsthatcreatelife-changingexperiencesforpeople experiencingmentalhealthchallenges,socialisolationand disabilities.’Eachprogramparticipantisassignedtheir ownmentortoassistandsupportwithbuildingrapport andtrust.
ASurfCoastperformancecoach,formercompetitive surfer,andmotheroftwo,Tiffany’ssurf(andlife) philosophyissimple.‘Thereisalwaysanotherwaveor anotheropportunity.’
Tiffany’sparentswerebothkeensurfers,andshehasfond memoriesofgoingtothebeachwithherfamilyand takingpartintheNippersprogram.So,whenTorquay SLSCinitiatedanewboardridersclubforgirlsduringher teens,Tiffanysignedup.Itseemedlikeanatural progression.ShesubsequentlycompetedinlocalandState surfingroundsandwassohookedonsurfingthatshewent toWesternAustraliatostudysurfscienceatuniversity. DuringCoVid,Tiffany’sambitiontotraveltheworldto surf,coach,andconductretreatswasputonhold.Itwas duringthattimethatoneoftheothermothersatthe AngleseaplaygroupaskedTifftoteachthemtosurf. Reluctantatfirst, Tiffanyeventuallyagreed.Ondayone,eight‘murfers’ (motherswhosurf)turnedupandby2021thegrouphad growntoalmost50members!
Notonlydidthegroupprovideachancetolearntosurf,it wasanopportunityforthemumstoconnect,makefriends andenjoytimeawayfromtheirchildren.Itwasalso educationalinotherwaysasTiffanysharedherextensive knowledgeoflocalsurfconditions,hazardssuchasrips, andhowtokeeptheirfamiliessafeatthebeach.
CurrentlyTiffanyisinvolvedwiththe‘SurfHerWay’ initiative,aSurfingVictoriaprogramthat‘encourages womenandgirlstodiscoverthefreedomandjoyof surfing’,connecttonature,eachother,andbeconfident andhappy.Shealsooffersone-on-onesurfcoaching. ‘Surfingisalife-longjourney,you’regoingtolearnallthe time,thereisnoendpoint’saysTiffany.

Whileworkingforaleadingsurfretailcompanyonthe coast,Gillbecamefrustratedwiththemarketingimagery ofwomeninsurfculture.Shewantedbetter representationofworld-çclasswomensurfers:womenin thewater,surfing.Notinbikinisonthebeach,asthey weresooftenportrayed.Shefeltdisenchanted.In response,Gill,withherbestmate–photographerWillemDirkduToit–createdablogdocumentingthelivesof everydaywomensurfers:BabesonWaves.

Astandoutmomentofthisapproachreinforcesthecore valuesofthesurftherapyprogram.Arecentparticipant was‘petrifiedofsandanddidnotwanttowalkonit’to gettotheocean.Thementordiscoveredthatthe participantlikedcomputerprogramming.Usingthis interest,theybegantowritecodeonthesand.Eventually thementeeconfidentlygrabbedaboard,crossedthe beach,andthey‘couldn’tgethimoutoftheocean!’ Theprogramisnotjustaboutsurfing.‘Ifyougettosurf, it’sfantastic!’

HelenandCraigSalmonareex-colleaguesofmine.In fact,Craigofferedmeajobasteacher-librarianat AngleseaPrimarySchoolaftermytenyearhiatusfrom education.CraigthenprogressedtobecomePrincipalat HightonPrimarySchoolwhichwasaanInternational BaccalaureateprimaryschoolinGeelong.
Hiswife,HelenjoinedthestaffatAngleseaPrimary SchoolasaclassroomteacherandIdevelopedthegreatest admirationforherteachingmethodsandskills.After approximatelytwenty-sevenyearsineducationand Craig’sapproximatethirty-eightyears,theybothdecided
totaketheirskillsoverseasbyjoiningtheInternational Baccalaureateprimaryyearsprogram. AngolaAdventures
HelenandCraig’sfirstappointmenttoanInternational BaccalaureateschoolwasinLuanda,AngolaonthesoutheastcoastofAfrica.Thisschoolwasfiveyearsoldandwas developedbylocaloilcompanies,whohadaprevalencein Angola.
InstructionsandlessonswerealwaysinEnglishand teachersweregivenplanningtimethroughouttheweekto ensurecohesionexistedbetweenthem,butthemajor focuswasontheengagementofallstudents.
Itcostparents$20,000U.Stoenroltheirchildrenfor twelvemonths.
Manyparentswereex-patriots,richlocals,orchildrenof oilcompanyemployees.Parentsplacedahighvalueon
educationandteachersworkedwiththemtomaximise learning.Therewasabalanceintheculturaldiversityat theschool,withstudentsandteachers,howeverthegoals werealwaysworkingtowardssuccess.
Angolahadrecentlyenduredtwenty-sevenyearsofcivil war.Evidence,suchasbulletholesinbuildingsandthe presenceofnumerouslandmineswereconstant remindersoftheunsavouryhistoryofAngola.Inaddition tothiswarhistory,InternationalBaccalaureateteachers oftenhadtopayhighpricesforimportedfoodandoften sufferedfromgastricreactions.

AfterayearinAngola,HelenandCraigsetoffonanother
hundredandfiftystreetchildrenformorethanadecade. Thesechildrenwouldotherwisehavenoaccessto schooling.HelenandCraigcontinuetositontheBoard oftheschoolandfundraisetosupportit’sgreatwork.
HelatertookontheroleofHeadofSchoolattheAga Khanschool,namedafterhisRoyalHighness,theAga Khan.Thisisoneofthreehundredschoolsindeveloping countries.
StayingConnected
HelenandCraighelpedinthefoundationofaschoolfor streetkidsinDhaka,calledSolmaidCommunitySchool. Thisschoolhasbeensuccessfullyprovidingfreeschooling forone.ItisteacherslikeHelenandCraigSalmon,who havesacrificedacomfortablelifewithfamilyandfriends, thatwillmakeAngolanandBangladeshieducationreach theproposedgoals.

HelenandCraigspenteightandahalfyearsin Bangladesh,withHelenspendingoneandahalfyearsas Principalinalowtomiddleclassschoolwithstudents tryingtogainaccreditationfortheCambridge Internationalschool.Itwashardwork,butmost rewarding.Theydevelopedacommunityserviceprogram referredtoas3T,whichtranslatedtoTeachersTeaching Teacherswheretheyconductedfreeteachingworkshops usinglowcostmaterialsaimedatdevelopingsound teachingmethods.
CraigspentsevenyearsastheCEOoftheinternational schoolinDhaka.HelatertookontheroleofHeadof SchoolattheAgaKhanschool,namedafterhisRoyal Highness,theAgaKhan.Thisisoneofthreehundred schoolsindevelopingcountries.

MandyMitchell-Tavernerwas assignedtomeasanapprovedPuppy RaiserforGuideDogsVictoriawhen Iwasjustapup–me-cute,curious, energeticandverykeentolearnallI mightneedtoknowtohopefully becomethebestGuideDogintown. Iknewshehadhadotherpuppiesto careforbeforeme–IfoundoutIwas hereighthpuppy.Iquicklylearntthat shewasinchargeandwasperhaps evensmarterthanIwas.Shereally knewherstuff.
Basictrainingbeganathome,whereI foundoutmynamewasBettyandI wasexpectedtorespondwhenIwas called.Ilearnedabouttoilettraining, wheremyfoodwasservedup,howto behaveinthebackyard,inthecar, andonthestreetandintheshops whenwewentforawalk.Ibeganto feelcomfortableinmyspecialorange trainingcoat.Ibecameadeptat walkingclosetoMandyandresisting anyinterestingsmellsthatmight temptmetowanderoffcourse.I learntnottobedivertedbypeople whothoughtitwouldbeOKtopat meorstopforachat.Igotquitegood quitequicklyatjustlookingatthem andpretendingIwasn’tinterested.
OnceIstartedtomingleoutinthe world,Ilearntnottotakeaninterest inpeople’sfood,gainedexperience travellingoncrowdedbusesand trams,learnttoignoredistractions, andtokeepmyattentioncloselyon whatMandywassayingtome.That wasquitealearningexperience!
Mandytaughtmesomuchwith patience,love,firmness,agreatsense ofhumourandplentyof encouragementandpraise.Wewent everywheretogether.Welearntto understandeachotherwelland sharedmanyhappyandfundays,a fewadventures,lotsofchallengesand successes.Afternearlyayear,I attendedmyfinalassessmenttoseeif
IwouldprogresstoGuideDog Trainingorbechosenforanother importantcareer.Ipassedwithflying colours,andwasselectedtobecomea ‘broody’,abreedingdogforGuide DogsVictoria.Thiswasconsidereda veryspecialjob.Onlythebestofthe bestarechosenforthispositionto helpensurethenextgeneration. Mandyhaddoneagreatjob.Ihad earnedmycolours.Icontinuedto livearelaxedandrestfullifeathome withMandy,visitingGuideDogs headquartersformating,andwhen mypupsweredue.Istayedwithmy puppiestoprovideallmyloveand careuntiltheywereweaned.
Afterdeliveringtwolittersofcute puppiesIretiredtoMandy’sTLCas apermanentmemberofher household.ThenIhadanewrole–oneofmentortothenewGuideDog puppiesMandyPuppyRaisedover theensuingyears–Ialmostlost countofhowmany,butIbelieve therewereteninall.
I’dforgottenhowcheekysomepups canbe,cute,soeveryonesays,but bundlesofmischief!Myrolemeant thatIneededtoshownewpupshow tosettlein,getusedtobeingina strangehouse–teachingthemto sleepatnight,howtobegentlehouse dogsandhowtomanageiftheir person(Mandy)hadtoleavethemfor ashorttime.Therewasnoseparation anxietyforthesebabiesasIwas alwaysthere.
AllMandy’spuppieshadlotsoffun whiletheylearntsomanynewthings: interestingwalkstothebeach, playing/sometimestrainingwith otherlocalpuppies,swimming.They wenteverywhere,outformeals, visiting,shopping,mindingthe grandkids.Theywereneverlefthome alonetogetboredandchewand misbehave.Asthepuppiesgrewand learntmoreIbegantoseethatthey werereallylikehumanteenagersat somestages,butwiththeoddwordof encouragementIsetthemontheir path.Itonlytakesabouteighteen monthsforayoungdogtogrowup, becomesensibleanddependable. Sometimesiffeelsmuchlonger!Over
theyearsIwatchedaspuppies becameyoungresponsibledogs, embracedtheireducation,andwere matchedtopeoplewithlowvisionor blindnessasGuideDogs.Thiswas alwaysaproudmomentforMandy andmyself,althoughaccompanied withjustatingeofsadnessona personallevel,perhapslikeaparent sendingachildofftobeginschool. Exciting,fullofhope,butatouch poignant.Iknowthatevenafter20 yearsandsomanydogsitwasnever easyforMandytosaygoodbye.
Justanote-someofthepuppies didn’tquitemanagethehigh standardsrequiredbyGuideDogs Victoriatobematchedwithpeople withlowvisionorblindness,butthe manyskillsandsocialattributesthey hadacquiredledtheminto alternativecareersasTherapy, AmbassadororCompanionDogsto awiderangeofpeople.The importantyearsoftrainingwere neverlost.
Bushfires
It’sapproachingmiddayonFebruary 16,2023,whenIlookaroundan AireysInletCommunityHallfullto bursting.Peoplehavetravelledthe lengthoftheSurfCoastandsome fromacrossthestatetobehere.The collectivehubbubfallstosilenceas MCJamieMackenzieintroducesa panelofspeakerswhobegintoshare theirrecollections.It’sfortyyears sincetheAshWednesdayfires,but memoriesofthatdayandits aftermathremainasvividasever.
BillyBubbisanaturalstoryteller. FromtheAngleseaCFAtruckhe watchedasAirey’sInlet‘blewto bits.’Rooveswerecomingoff,cars blownofftheroad,andallthetime thefrontragingcloserasiffueltanks werebeingdroppedinthebush.The responsibilityofdecision-makingin acrisisofthatmagnitudehasnever leftBill.
‘It’saterriblethingtobecaptainof afirebrigadeanddrivedownthe streetandtelltheblokes,don’tworry aboutthathouse,putthathouse out.’
SharonRawlingreadsfromher sister’sextraordinaryschoolgirl accountofthefireovercomingthe hamletofDean’sMarsh.Thepolice
triedtoevacuatetheschoolchildren intwocars,buthadtoturnaround whenconfrontedwithawalloffire andsmoke.‘Wewentbackintothe hallandsomebodyrippedupthe carpetandputitoverthetopofus.’ Afterthehallwassuccessfully defendedthekidsweregivenbuckets tohelpquellfiresstillsmouldering aroundthetown.
PatHutchinsonwastheAireysInlet publican.Returningtothe devastatedtown‘waslikebeingon themoon,itwasjustwhitepostswith whiteground…therewasn’tabreath ofairorthesoundofonebirdor animal.’
Thepubwas‘non-existent.’Patis stillemotionalwhenrecallinghow localsandwharfiefriendsfromthe citypulledtheirweighttogetitup andrunningagainunderamarquee theverynextday.
DrRobGordonobserves‘it’sgood tohavelotsofmates,’duringacrisis likethat.ButaccordingtoGordon thephysicalrecoveryeffortisonly partofthechallenge.

Talking,andsharingmemories, seemstohelp.That’sonethingI’ve noticedsincebeginningtocompile anoralhistoryofthesocialand environmentalimpactofAsh WednesdayintheAireysInlet district.Andit’snotjustthosewho
foughtthefires,orwitnessedthem firsthand,whohavestoriestotell. It’sallthosewhoborethebruntof AshWednesdayindifferent,highly personalways.
Theirrecollectionsareallvaluable. WhichiswhyAireysInletDistrict Association,withthesupportofSurf CoastShireandtheCorrFamily,are embarkingonthisproject.

TheCommunityBankhassetaside$200,000for communitygroupstoapplyforfundingtowardaproject thathasbeensittingonthe“Wishlist”,ratherthanan immediateneed.Thegrantprocessisopentilltheendof Aprilandallcommunitygroupsareencouragedtoapply fortheirlittle,orbiggeramounttoassistwithfasttracking amuchneededimprovementtohowyourcommunity groupoperates.Applicationformsandmoreinformation areavailablefromtheBendigoCommunityBankbranch inAnglesea,sopleasedropinandseeoneofthefriendly staffifyouwanttolearnmoreaboutthisexcitingoffer.

FishbyMoonlite,anAngleseabusinessthathadwonaloyalcustomandaccoladesfromfood critics,wasforsale.Whoevertookitoverhadtostepintobigshoes.
Meanwhile,inMelbourne,ayoungcoupleweresickof spendinghoursincitytrafficandlookingforafresh challenge.WhentheydiscoveredtheAngleseafreshand cookedfishshop,theywereimmediatelyinterested–they hadbeenfrequentvisitorstotheSurfCoastandlovedthe area.Theyhadachatwithpreviousowners,Matt GermanchisandGemmaGange,andthedealwassealed. Gurpinder“Bobby”GrewalandKamaldeep“Kamal” Kaur,bothborninIndia,hadcometoAustraliaas hospitalitystudents.Theirparentsarrangedforthemto meet,loveblossomed,followedbymarriageandthebirth oftwindaughters.Bobbyhadcookedinsomeof Melbourne’strendiestItalianrestaurants.Hewasachef atthepopularRococoinStKildaforeightyears. BobbyandKamalwereveryawarethatthecommunity hadhighexpectationsofthebusiness,withthestandard setbyMattandGemma.Theysawnoreasontomake changesandkeptthesamesuppliers,samerecipesand samefood.“Wehaveafewdailyspecials,butthebasics haveremainedconstant,”saidBobby.
Staffshortagewasanearlychallengeandforthefirstfour monthsitwasonlyBobby,KamalandKamal’sbrother, holdingthingstogether.Theywerepleasedtohave startedinthequieterwintermonths,whiletheylearned
theropes,undertheguidanceofMattandGemma.“It wasabigjumpfromItaliancookingtoseafoodandfish andchips,”saidBobby.Theyappreciatedthesupportof thelocalstocarrythemthroughthewinterdoldrums. TheyalsofeltembracedbytheAngleseacommunitywith peoplepoppingintoofferwhateverhelptheyneeded.
ThestaffproblemshavenowbeensolvedandBobbyand Kamalcan’tspeakhighlyenoughoftheircurrentteam. Thiswasjustaswell,becausecustomerspiledthroughthe dooroverthesummermonths.“Wewereonourfeetfor hourswithoutabreak,”saidKamal.“Everynightwewent homeandreflected,alwayslookingforwaystoimprove,” sheadded.
“Thisisthefirstyearforusandthereisalotoflearning butnowwehavesurvivedthesummerIthinknextyear willbemucheasier,”saidBobbyoptimistically. Bobbyfreelyadmitstheircookedfishisalittlemore expensivethantheaveragechippy,butitisfresh,localand theportionsizesarelarge.Icastmyeyetothecoolerto admiretheremainsoftwohugeline-caughtsnapper, alongwithacoupleofmassivesalmonandanocean trout.TheylookedsofreshIwouldn’thavebeen surprisedtoseeonetwitching.Thispremiumquality, freshseafood–thefisharelinecaughtorsustainably farmed-isdeliveredeverymorningexceptSunday. Askedwhatthebestpartoftheventurewasforhim, Bobbydidn’thesitate.“It’safamilybusiness.Meandmy wifeareagoodteamandit’sthefirsttimeworkingfor ourselves.”
ReflectingontheirnewlifeworkinginAnglesea,Bobby added,“Wehaven’tmissedMelbourneabit.IfeellikeI’ve beenlivinghereforalong,longtime.”

Thisbirdisstrikinglypatternedandhasa distinctiveblack,usuallyerect,crest,abroadblack stripethroughthewhiteface,awhitepatch betweenthebillandtheeyeandablackchinand throat.Thebillisdeep,hookedandalmost parrot-like.Itisusedtopriseandripbarkawayto exposesmallarthropods.Theremaining underpartsarebrightyellow,thebackandrump, olive-greenandthewingsandtailaredarkgrey withanolivewash.Femaleshaveadarkisholive throat.Thesebirdsareusuallyfoundinwoodlands andeucalyptforests.Theyalsofrequenttea-tree, andacaciawoodlandsandparksandgardens. Thefemaleconstructsabeautifullybuiltdeepcup nestmadefromfinebarkstripsandbarkfibres boundtogetherwithspiderwebs,andlinedwith finelyshreddedbarkstripsandgrasses.The outsideofthenestandtherimofthecupare carefullyfinishedtoasmoothtextureand sometimesdecoratedwithlichens.Twoorthree eggsarelaid,theyarewhiteandfinelymarked withbrownsandgreys.Thenestisoftenplaced highinaslenderforkofaeucalypt.Thenestcan beveryexposedtothewind,butthedepthofits cupprotectsthesittingbirdandtheyoung.

TheAIRARhavebeeninspiredto tacklethisproject,afterarecently successfulventureinCanadawasable tosettlefamiliesintoanewlife.
Theaimistoraiseenoughmoneyto coverthecostsofthefamilyforoneyear whiletheysettleintoahome,workand schoolingandbecomeself-sufficient.

Onthenightof18December1902,theshipInverlochy wentagroundonIngoldsbyReefoffAnglesea.Captain Kendricklaterrecordedtheeventsofthatnight: Thewindkeptupfairlyduringtheearlypartofthenight, andat10o'clockweweregoingatarateofabout5miles anhourtowardsthenorth-west.Thenthewindfellawayall ofasudden,andwewereleftdrifting.Mywatchendedat 10,andasthefirstmatetookoverthejob,Ilaydownonthe companiontogetabitofsleep.Iwasawakenedbythe matecallingtome,atabout11,thattherewerebreakers ahead.Wetriedtotackbutmissedstays…weweredrifting closertothebreakers,andjustaswedroppedanchorsshe bumped.Atthattimethewaterwascomparativelysmooth, butabigswellrose,sufficienttocausesometroublein gettingouttheboats.Thevesselwasrockingfromsideto side,andthepoopfittingswerecastaboutondecklike corks.Themastsswayedandshook,strainingthestaysto theutmost,andexpectingthattheywouldcomedownonus everyminute,wehurriedtolowertheboats. Itwouldseemthatincalmconditions,bearingswerelost, andtheareafromtheAireyslightthroughtoPtRoadknight wasmistakenforthatofPtLonsdale.Allpersonsonboard landedsafelynearBarwonHeadsintwooftheship'sboats. Leavingtheshipatabout11.30pm,theyhadfailedto realisetheywereonlyashortdistancefromtheAnglesea shore.Theyhadheadedeastandeventuallymadeitashore nearThompson'sCreek(Breamlea)at7.00amfromwhere theywalkedalongthebeachtoBarwonHeads.
TheInverlochy,whichbelongedtoG.Milne&Coof Aberdeen,hadbeenboundforMelbourne(fromLiverpool) with3000tonsofgeneralcargo,including,forexample, 1778cases,casksandquartercasksofwhiskey,360casesof borax,40kegspaint,40casesmangles,and19tonsofpig iron.Initiallytherewerehopesthattheshipcouldbefloated offbuttheweatherchangedtoastrongwesterlywindwith heavyseas,causingtheruddertobewashedoff.Apriority forthesalvagerswastherecoveryof10milesofcable weighingatotalof50tonswhichwasdestinedforthe MelbourneTramwayCompany.
DuringFebruaryandMarch1903alargenumberof casksofaleandspiritswerewashingashoreanda CustomsOfficerwasassignedtothewrecktoprotect revenuewhilesalvageoperationsweregoingon.
However,many
“unauthorised visits”weremade tothewreckand tothebeachby localsand fishermen,who createda headacheforthe customsand policeofficers.
Asubsequent MarineBoardof Inquirychargedv vCaptainKendrick withcareless navigationand negligence.Hehad hiscertificate suspendedfor twelvemonthsand wasorderedtopay costsof120 pounds.
Theoriginalship’s logbookisheldin thecollectionoftheAnglesea&DistrictHistorical Societywhiletheship'sbell,whichhungfor manyyearsonthebalconyofvvthehotelto announcethedepartueofCobb&Cocoaches,isnow inprivatehands.

ThisgroupcommencedinFebruary2021andhasranged from1–8StitchersatameetingandwithCWAmembers joiningthegroupweregularlyhave4-5stitchers.With supportfromAngleseaCommunityHousethegroupwas successfulinitsapplicationforagrantfromtheSurf CoastShireCounciltopurchasethreesewingmachines andanoverlocker.
Thesewershavemadeasignificantamountofgoods whichhavebeendonatedtovariouscharitiesand organisations.Thevastmajorityofthefabricusedto makeitemsisrecycled.Thankstothosewhohave donatedmaterialtothegroup.

TheAustraliaDaytraditionontheriverbankatAnglesea began35yearsagoasalead-uptobi-centenary celebrations.ItwasinstigatedbyLion,BrianButterworth; andIwasinvolvedwiththeentertainmentfor17years andthenastowncrierfor15more.
In1788CaptainArthurPhillipbecameGovernorofthe settlementinTerraAustralisIncognita(thegreatunknown Southland).ThenameAustraliawasgivenintheearly 1880sbyMatthewFlinders.
Thisyearourguestspeakers,musicians,andsingerstook usonamusicalandpoeticaljourneyaroundAustralia.
WetravelledAlongtheRoadtoGundagai,wentBack AgaintoYarrawonga,roamedaroundOurIslandHome, andwentdowntheCooperwithClancyoftheOverflow. ThensomeonesuggestedLet'shaveaBarbecue.Sowith joyfulstrainsweallsangWeareAustralian.

WealsovisitedSwampyCreekbeforeitreceiveditsmore aptandeuphoniousnameofAngleseaRiver;andalong thewayMikeBradyreceivedacoupleofaccoladestoadd tohisAM-LocalLegendandAustralianMusicIdol. Werememberedourveryfirsttourist,WilliamBuckley "thewildwhiteman"fromCheshire,wholikedourareaso muchhestayedfor32years;butwedon'texpectour currentdayvisitorstostayquitethatlong.

SurfCoastShirehadtoremovethedangerouslimbsandthecommunityexpressed interestinreimaginingthetree’strunksintoasculpture. Amoredetaileddisplayofthesculpture’sdesignwillbeavailableforviewingatthe AngleseaArtHousethroughMarchandApril.
Thisprojectisonthetraditionallandsofthe Wadawurrungpeople.WeAcknowledgethem astheTraditionalOwnersandProtectorsof thisplace.
