Revival of a much-loved clubhouse By Michael Collins After more than 10 years in the making, the much-loved Anglesea Motor Yacht Club (AMYC) has officially welcomed members and the community to its redeveloped clubhouse. It’s an amazing space and the new upstairs floor plan perfectly captures the beautiful vista from Point Addis to Point Roadknight. Funding for the redevelopment was almost entirely raised by the club, other than a grant from the Surf Coast Shire. There was no state or federal government assistance. From its early beginnings as a diving club, fishing, and then sailing club, AMYC has evolved into a broad member-based club with many interests. The redeveloped clubhouse is a terrific multi-purpose space for members and community groups.

The club is the home of the famous Rusty Anchor Bar, the popular surf coast Roo Run, and hosts the annual Rock to Ramp swim conducted by Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club (ASLSC). It is the base for surf life saving patrols during the summer months. It has an active sailing program and is the base for the Rusty Anglers fishing group.

Volunteer-led revamp Above all else, the club is a volunteerled organisation, maintaining its strong sense of community spirit, with a friendly and very social vibe. The club is appreciative of the outstanding work done by its building sub-committee and in particular volunteer project managers Kate Stanley and John O’Connor.

The previous building was originally constructed in the early 1960s, largely from volunteer labour and working bees. The re-building process involved securing 13 management plans for the precinct and negotiations with the Wadawurrung, traditional owners of the land, recognising the cultural heritage of the area. Given the close proximity to the water, several climate change and erosion studies were also undertaken over many years. The new clubhouse is the result of an incredible amount of work over a very long period of time and was officially opened with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by recently retired Commodore Wes Smith and fellow life members.
