History in the making! By Julie Martin In 2019, three local women Cassie Harrison, Kim Prince and Loz Bell approached Anglesea Football Netball Club (AFNC) about starting a women’s football team. The club already had more than enough women to start a team, with a coach and team manager ready to go! AFNC was supportive and excited to have this new addition to the club. In 2020, 53 women came to a comeand-try day before the season, but COVID stopped that season from even starting. In 2021, the women were able to get the team up and playing for most of the season, making it to preliminary finals and winning against Lara before COVID again finished the season.
Third time lucky though! In 2022, the team was able to play a full season of outstanding football, losing only one game to South Barwon. Ranging in age from 18–39, the team trained and played hard and fought it out in every match to reach the Grand Final, facing off against South Barwon. This time they took home the win! AFNC president Jamie MacKenzie believes that ‘women’s football has had one of the biggest impacts on the culture of the club community and has actually brought back why sport is important to all of us’. Team manager Jenny Lingam has been advocating for a women’s team for years and is excited to be able to see her daughter Phoebe, who played for
the Anglesea juniors, return to play in her home town. AFNC is glad to be able to provide a space for women to get involved with AFL in their local town. Team coach Luke Cini has found his role to be very rewarding and is proud to see how far the team has come – more than half of the women had not played competitively before joining the team. With the support of all the assistant coaches, trainers, runners and the locals coming out to cheer them on, the women’s team is looking forward to returning as reigning champions for another fantastic season in 2023. AFNC is an inclusive club and if you are keen to get involved or join the team get in touch.
