Albina District Community Resource Center Terminal Studio Part 1: Winter Term 2019

This project focuses on engaging with the Community and connecting with the local community center. It is an adaptive reuse project of a power substation that was built in 1906. The site is currently gated off and is unable to be used or accessed by the public. The goal is to give the site back to the community at different scales; the block, the neighborhood, and the city. At the site scale, the site and existing building will be repurposed for public use. The program of the building and site focuses on being a resource for the nearby community organizations and act as an expansion of the adjacent community center with spaces focusing on nutrition and health, and providing outdoor rec space which the community center does not have access to. At the city scale, there will be energy production and storage as a form of resiliency for the city in preparation for any future earthquakes and other events.

The design itself focuses on interactions of space from indoor to outdoor, outdoor to outdoor, and existing building and new construction. The interaction of each space is created by an “interstitial� threshold space which includes a kinetic structure.

Dar Es Salaam Mosquito Research & Discovery Center Fall Term 2018 ity mun com

This project was a group effort with Rachel Lozeau and Madelaine Murray and was submitted to the annual AIA COTE competition. The goal of the design was to respond to the negative social dynamic created by the release of mosquitoes in communities that are suffering from vector born diseases, and the health crisis of Dar es Salaam, through education and interaction.

In order to address the mosquito public health crisis in Tanzania, the facility ties together natural resources, community education, and mosquito research to address negative public perception and provide a strong basis for successful mosquito releases. The gross square footage of the facility is 73,615 sf. The facility offers spaces for mosquito research and educational outreach to the community along with community gardens and a bamboo fabrication garden, which provide resources for the community and penetrate the building in order to create a sense of transparency.

The main route of circulation is a system of exhibit spaces: Domestic Protection, Build to Protect, Life-Cycle of a Mosquito, and Grow to Release. These exhibits complement the adjacent research elements, allowing the public to interact with the space safely.

ALBINA VISION OPERA HOUSE & CULTURAL CENTER Center for Public Education of the Arts Winter Term 2018

The Albina Vision is a development plan proposed by a local Portland architecture and design firm to give back to the traditionally African American community that was destroyed from the development of the Memorial Colosseum and the Moda Center. The Plan proposes mixed-use developments, low income housing, and a new Portland Opera House placed at the end of the Broadway Bridge, adjacent to the Memorial Colosseum. The goal of it is to reintroduce culture into the community, and give back the housing for all income classes that was taken out by previous developments.

Historically, the Opera is an elitist event, which contradicts the goal of the development plan. To make the opera more accessible by all, a public education and art program is included.

The design of the cultural center creates interaction between the opera, and the public art gallery and public education spaces. The main source of circulation is within the mass housing the opera. The art gallery space act as a filter between the outdoor public space and the opera. Lastly, the public education spaces on the upper floors are on the periphery of the building and creating a visible connection to it form the outside. This inverts the hierarchy of the traditional opera house.
