A REFLECTIVE SPACE AUG 2019
PRIMER I The Brief: The brief was to design a structure which would address the needs and concerns of students in school. Both the programme and the site were to be determined, based on what we thought was most important to improve students’ wellbeing.
The Intervention: There are barely any spaces in school specifically designed for students to carry out the act of reflection, when they feel troubled, or stressed out from their hectic lives. Most of the existing seating spaces are shared spaces - where students usually gather to study or to hang out in between classes. Hence, “A Reflective Space” aims to provide a safe and tranquil space for students to carry out the act of reflection as an individual. WALKING TOWARDS THE SPACE

A PRIVATE DWELLING SEP 2019 - FEB 2020
PRIVATE DWELLING FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR The given brief was rather simple - to design a private residential dwelling for a family of 4. Each family member was described with their own set of traits and personal interests. Thus, the design of the dwelling should cater to the needs of each individual member, as well as provide for the needs of the family as a whole.
Interests of each family member
DESIGN INTENT
SITE / SITE AREA HOLLAND GROVE VIEW
Given the fact that the family members are constantly pre-occupied with work or their own personal interests and hobbies, chances for family interaction becomes rare as they carry out their lives separately. Thus, the creation and exploration of voids and levels in the design of the house, eventually aims to raise visual awareness between the family members - so as to increase opportunities for interactions to occur even as they engage in their separate activities.

VERTICAL VILLAGE @ LAVENDER SEP 2020 - FEB 2021
FUTURE HOUSING FOR THE AGEING POPULATION
It is estimated that 1 in 4 Singaporeans will be aged 65 years and above by 2030 - this proves Singapore’s growing concerns of an ageing population. Based on research and surveys carried out, it was found that one of the primary concerns of the ageing population is the ability to age-in-place - defined as the ability to stay within their communities while keping a degree of independence. Additionally, it was found that seniors who lived along tended to rely more on their friends or neighbours for support, to avoid falling into the risk of social isolation. Vertical Village @ Lavender aims to redefine housing for senior citizens by addressing their needs, concerns and aspirations , to enable them to age-in-place independently but healthily within the community. The project explores how intergenerational programmes - common programmes aimed at bringing people of different age groups together, could be integrated into high-rise living, given the diverse demographic of Jalan Besar.

INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAMMES The introduction of intergenerational programmes within the residence aims to reduce the chances of social isolation for senior citizens who live alone, while fulfilling their aspirations. It also aims to remove the stigma that surround the programmes which are typically carried out in ‘senior activity centres’ within the neighbourhood, encouraging participation in these activities.

Intergenerational programmes are common programmes in which people of different age groups could partake in together. The types of intergenerational programmes introduced are decided based on the aspirations of the ageing population. Eventually, it was decided that these programmes would be located at different levels within the development based on their level of intimacy. By determining the different levels of intimacy for each programme, it encourages participation in these programmes as people are able to choose to participate at scales that they are comfortable with.
Alongside the 3 main intimacy levels established - programmes amongst neighbours, programmes amongst residents and programmes with the community - there are also spaces for individuals like the reading nook. Thus, people are not being forced to engage in activities they would otherwise be uncomfortable with.

AUG 2019 *Plans and a base model were provided for this Assignment As part of the Architectural Visual Communications II (AVC II) Module, We were tasked with an Architecture Visualization practice using Revit’s in-built 3D rendering system - The assignment involved the production of a Sectional Perspective cut of the mock development @ Tembeling Road, along with Interior Perspective of the Bathroom and Living Room of a Unit. As part of the Materials and Architectural Technology (MAT II) Module , we were also tasked to create an Exploded Axonometric to show the details and connections of the PPVC Module system of the units within the same building.

BATHROOM DETAILS Upon stepping into the bathroom, one may notice the Dark-grey stone textured porcelain tile wall which runs along the length of the shower area. The dark-grey wall forms a contrast with the light-coloured walls and floors of the bathroom and acts as a backdrop. The concept of “Contrast” was also applied in other areas of the bathroom. In order to maintain the idea of contrasting colours within the bathroom, dark colours, namely black and walnut brown were chosen as accent colours. This can be observed on the matte-black fittings of the showerhead, water faucet and flush buttons, as well as the black frames for the window, shower curtain, mirror and the surface of the shower recess. When placed against the light Nepal Gray-coloured tiled wall, it creates a stark contrast, similar to the effects of the backdrop and its surrounding walls. Walnut-coloured Wood plank tiles are used for the shower area to highlight the distinguishment between the shower area and the water closet area by similarly, creating a contrast with the significantly lighter coloured tiles. The ceiling was designed such that it terminates before touching the surface of the wall, leaving a small gap for Cove lighting to light up the sink, shower and WC area. The cove lighting works together with the warm colour scheme of the walls and floor to create a warm ambience in the bathroom.

CASE STUDY: BAUHAUS, DESSAU AUG 2020
ARCHITECT + FOUNDER: WALTER GROPIUS
36
A study of Bauhaus, Dessau by Walter Gropius was done, using the ‘7 Lines of Inquiry’ - Massing, Structure, Interior vs Exterior, Public vs Private, Programmatic Distribution, Circulation, Facade.
LOCATION: DESSAU, GERMANY
A Revit Model of the Bauhaus Building was completed in groups, and eventually used for diagrams within the report.
CONSTRUCTION YEAR: 1925 - 1926
The diagram below shows how programmes within the Bauhaus are organised vertically and are separated into blocks. It is observed that the classrooms within the technical school block and the workshop rooms within the workshop block would inhabit the same areas on each floor. This makes it easier to distinguish and locate the various programmes.

SCHOOLS OF THE FUTURE The site sits within an intersection of cultures and commercial activity. Commercial activity, and especially craft-related trade played a pivotal and significant role in the early beginnings of the district.
BASKETWEAVING
FURNITURE
JEWELLERY
METALWORK
TEXTILE
This is evident by the number of artisanal craft-related stores found around the site. However, along with many other countries, the practice of artisanal crafts have been seeing a decline in interest and relevancy over the years, especially in an age where the demands of consumerism are met through the convenience of mass production. Thus, in view of the declining relevancy of artisanal crafts, the school aims to safeguard the practice of artisanal crafts by providing a platform for the passing of craft skill/knowledge & to explore the fusion of contemporary craft practices so as to increase its relevancy. The school embraces the crossovers and fusion between the old and the new - traditional and contemporary practices which may otherwise be perceived to supersede the practice of artisanal crafts. On a neighbourhood scale, the school also becomes a form of interconnected public space for the neighbourhood to learn and appreciate artisanal crafts.

HOW CAN ARCHITECTURE PLAY A ROLE IN SAFEGUARDING & INCREASING THE RELEVANCY OF ARTISANAL CRAFT PRACTICES? The School of Artisanal and Contemporary Crafts aims to; 1. Raise the Relevancy of Artisanal crafts by exploring the fusion of contemporary craft practices. (e.g. digital fabrication) 2. Provide a platform for the passing of artisanal craft knowledge and skills from craftsmen to the community. 3. To strengthen the identity of the site through artisanal crafts (which used to populate the area). 4. Provide local/aspiring artisanal craftsmen access to new markets and networks.
Proposed Curriculum
DESIGN METHODOLOGY - OMA, BLOX With reference to OMA BLOX, a key aspect of the methodology is the interconnectivity of the different program spaces via physical connections (circulation), which draws and allows the public to explore the different programmes within the building. Craft/Art schools are conventionally regarded as private institutions, in which most of the learning spaces are secluded away from the public eye. imilar to OMA BLOX, the project also aims to challenge the conventions of a school S as a private institution, whereas learning is not exclusive to students who enroll, and extends to the public in an attempt to pass on knowledge about such crafts. As such on a neighbourhood scale, the school becomes an interconnected public space for the learning and passing of craft skills and knowledge.
