Santa Cruz, Sonora Four days before Christmas, the towns of Santa Cruz and Mascareñas are more or less asleep.

City halls are closed. The doors to a quiet church are locked. The central plazas are silent, the streets empty. Blink as you ride along in a pickup truck, and the towns fade into open fields dotted with cattle.

Cuatro días antes de la Navidad, los pueblos mexicanos de Santa Cruz y San Lázaro parecen estar durmiendo.

Here, the Santa Cruz river is “basically the lifeline of the whole area,” as Luis Parra describes it. He runs the Santa Barbara Ranch, a centuries-old homestead on the river.

When he’s not overseeing the ranch, Parra works as an attorney. For almost six years, he represented the family of José Antonio Elena Rodriguez, a 16-year-old boy who was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent in 2012.

For over a year, Santos has worked on this ranch.

Three hours north, his sons — U.S. citizens — continue to live in Phoenix.

For Santos, the river water is good. Clean. And it tastes of nothing.

Ambos Nogales The Santa Cruz does not run through Nogales, but the river is crucial to its survival. The two cities (one in the U.S., one in Mexico) hug the border so tightly that they are usually referred to as ambos— or both— Nogales. Half the cities’ water supply comes from the groundwater of the Santa Cruz.

The border fence scales the hills of Ambos Nogales like some defunct roller coaster. Despite the barrier, hundreds cross daily from one Nogales to the other:to visit family members, to work, to go about their lives.

Mientras el río Santa Cruz no corre por Nogales, el río también es importante aquí. Las ciudades gemelas rodean la frontera, y usualmente se llaman Ambos Nogales. El 50 por ciento del agua usada en Nogales viene del agua del suelo del río Santa Cruz.

In Ambos Nogales, December feels more like a gentle autumn than winter. So, Cristóbal Lagunas and I sat outside on his porch in Nogales, Arizona. Two blocks away, the border wall stood within sight, as though it could overhear our conversation.

When Lagunas saw the border for the first time, he thought of the Great Wall of China.

“You know what I’m saying?” Lagunas laughed a little.

“And then you realize, it’s not the Great Wall of China, it’s the ‘Terrible Wall of the U.S.’ And you know. It’s ugly, and it sucks.”

La primera vez que Lagunas vio a la frontera, pensó en la Gran Muralla China.

When Lagunas was 13, he left his hometown in Chile and moved to Boston without papers.

“I came to this country when I was a teenager.”

Lagunas rephrased the sentence. “I was brought to this country as a teenager.”

With other high school students, he helped establish the Student Immigrant Movement, a statewide organization in Massachusetts. He spent a summer knocking on doors eight hours a day, asking people to get involved. Blisters formed on his feet from all the walking.

Cuando Lagunas tenía 13 años, salió de su pueblo chileno para vivir en Boston como indocumentado.

No vino al país cuando era adolescente, dijo. Fue traído a este país como adolescente.

“I would just introduce myself, and start with my story. And they either would be pissed and closed the door, or want to talk to me,” Lagunas remembered.

Lagunas managed to change his immigration status, but through non-profit work, continues fighting for those who cannot. If his undocumented friends aren’t free, Lagunas said, then neither is he.

Tubac, Arizona For Steve Gastellum and his family, the Santa Cruz River means horseback rides, rabbit hunting, swimming holes and water springs. But it also digs up the memory of injustice, tragedy, death.

When Gastellum’s grandparents— the Cota Lopez family from Mexico— settled on the U.S. territory in the 1880s, they managed to grow peanuts, carrots, peas, and watermelon in the desert. They used a séquia, an ancient irrigation system, to funnel water from the Santa Cruz.

Para Mike Gastellum y su familia, el río Santa Cruz trae recuerdos de montar los caballos, cazar conejos, nadar. Pero también, es un símbolo de la injusticia, tragedia, muerte.

Then, one day, they lost the river.

By 1912, the territory on which Gastellum's family lived became Arizona. By 1914, the U.S. government began revoking land from Mexican families.

The U.S. Supreme court ruled that the Baca Float No. 3 — the stretch of land on which the Cota Lopez family lived — was purchased by John Watts, a lawyer from the east coast.

Tensions rose between Mexican settlers and the east coast heirs who’d moved into Arizona. At one point, an ancestor of Gastellum’s was shot and killed by another rancher.

He’d been trying to water his cattle with the séquia that led to the river.

La tensión crecía entre las familias mexicanas y la gente del este que se habían mudado a Arizona. Una vez, un antepasado de Gastellum fue asesinado a tiros por un ranchero del este.

Gastellum’s family, American citizens with faithfully maintained Mexican traditions, never forgot about their stolen land.

Finally, in the 1980s, Gastellum contacted the Department of the Interior, who admitted that the land had rightfully belonged to his family.

The realization was bittersweet.

“It did hurt a tremendous amount, all the kids and the grandparents that were affected by it,” Gastellum said.

For years, his grandfather and father remained faithful that the American government would apologize, or provide compensation for the loss.

“And it never happened.”

Tucson, Arizona In south Tucson, the cool, soggy underbelly of the Santa Cruz runs underground— by a couple hundred feet.

“It’s still the river,” explained Joaquín Murrieta, “but it’s underground. We don’t see it. So right now, the water table is way below here. It’s like 200, 300 feet below us.”

But Murrieta, an ecologist, dreams of making the river flow above ground again.

En el sur de Tucson, el río es subterráneo, por más de 70 metros.

Murrieta works with the Watershed Management Group, teaching rainwater harvesting to Tucson residents.

If residents use more rainwater for their everyday needs, Murrieta says, the city will pump less groundwater from the Santa Cruz river. And it’s not impossible: technically, the city receives enough rainwater to support its 900,000 residents.

Originally from Hermosillo, Murrieta grew up with another river: the río Sonora, which cuts through northwestern Mexico and heads toward the ocean. As a child, he sat with his mother, their feet drifting in the Sonora river’s cool waters.

Listen, my son, have you listened to the river? His mother asked him in Spanish. The water’s running smoothly; it’s a happy river, she told him.

“So that’s my connection, it’s very personal, is to bring the happiness to this river. ” Murrieta said years later, the Santa Cruz River flowing far beneath his feet.

Mientras crecía en Hermosillo, Murrieta visitaba otro río— el río Sonora. Una vez, se sentó con su madre, sus pies flotando en las aguas del río Sonora.

“Oye mi hijito, ya oíste el río?” le preguntó a Murrieta.

Tubac, Arizona It was spitting snow in December, 2013 when Peg Bowden opened the door of her ranch. Juan Carlos, a migrant, was staring back at her.

He’d crossed the border and trudged through the desert. Now, as he stood in front of Bowden, he looked more dead than alive. He had been running from the threats of the drug cartels that plagued his remote village in Guatemala.

Estaba nevando el diciembre del 2013 cuando Peg Bowden abrió la puerta de su rancho. Juan Carlos, un migrante, estaba en el otro lado, mirándola.

By the time Carlos stumbled upon the ranch, he was lost, cold and hallucinating.

Bowden glanced at a plastic bottle Carlos carried, filled with yellow liquid. She wondered whether it was apple juice, before realizing he had been drinking his own urine.

On a piece of scrap paper, Bowden drew a map of the Santa Cruz River. Carlos, she figured, could follow the river north— where eventually, he'd reach Tucson.

Carlos made it to Tucson, but barely. On Christmas Day, he flagged down a Border Patrol agent, too tired and cold to continue walking in the desert. He spent months in a detention center before he was deported.

The two still talk through loud, crackly phone conversations. Bowden has visited Carlos, his wife, his three young children.

Four years later, she still remembers the hope Carlos expressed when she told him to follow the river.

“Santa Cruz?” He'd asked her. Like holy cross?

Bowden smiled.

“He really liked the name of the river.”

Bowden y Carlos hablan todavía, por conversaciones ruidosos del teléfono. Bowden ha visitado a Carlos, su esposa, sus hijos.
