NORMAN WISDOM’S ‘GUMP’ SUITS AND SILVER TRIBUTES HEAD TO HANSONS
He may have been Britain’s little man, but Norman Wisdom’s popularity was anything but small and now Hansons Auctioneers is bringing a remarkable collection celebrating his extraordinary career to auction in Derbyshire this November. For collectors and comedy fans, the collection offers a rare chance to own original pieces belonging to one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers, from the clothes that helped create his unforgettable ‘Gump’ character to spectacular silver tributes celebrating his recordbreaking success. Leading the collection are two original ‘Gump Suits’. The first, estimated at £3,000-£3,500, is the brown tweed two-piece, shirt, tie and flat cap worn by Wisdom between 1948 and 1953. Framed alongside it is a photograph of Wisdom wearing the outfit with none other than Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. A second suit, made in 1953 specifically to replicate the original, is estimated at £2,500£3,500. Wisdom wore it during his hugely successful run of films at Pinewood Studios, including Trouble in Store, The Square Peg and Follow a Star. Hansons’ auction will also feature some impressive silver reminders of just how successful Wisdom became. A spectacular Edwardian presentation tray weighing around 5kg and measuring approximately 72cm wide is estimated at £4,500-£5,500. Presented by theatre impresario Bernard Delfont in 1953, it celebrated Wisdom’s “wonderful record breaking run” at London’s Prince of Wales Theatre in Paris to
Piccadilly. Another substantial silver tray commemorates his record-breaking Robinson Crusoe season at Manchester’s Palace Theatre. There is even a fascinating link to comedy royalty, with a signed photograph of Laurel and Hardy estimated at £800-£1,200, following their memorable visit to see Wisdom perform. Perhaps the most charming piece charts where it all began. A 1945 flyer and Wisdom’s handwritten script record his first professional engagement – a Monday night appearance that earned the young performer just £5 and a week-long booking. For Hansons, collections such as this offer a fascinating opportunity to bring important pieces of British entertainment history to new generations of collectors. From that £5 first appearance to record-breaking theatre runs and hit films, the Norman Wisdom collection tells the story of the man behind the mayhem – and Hansons is giving fans the chance to own a little piece of it. The Norman Wisdom collection will feature in Hansons Auctioneers’ Derbyshire Comedy Sale this November. For auction details and to discover more, visit Hansons Auctioneers. AUTUMN RESET
ell what a Summer! We had some gorgeous weather, warm days and sometimes warmer nights where we all wished houses were built with air con here. Alas, those cooler days arrived sooner than we expected and it’s time to reset ourselves and our homes for the upcoming seasons. Clear away those summer flipflops, beach games and even the BBQ! OK, some people do love to BBQ throughout the year, but if that’s you I’m hoping for you that you have flooring to cope with the muddy ins and outs.
I like to add textiles to layer fabrics and make it all a bit cosier. Extra cushions with softer fabrics such as boucle, wool and faux fur, along with throws around the home give this feel. Think tassels, tones of a colour scheme and warm seat pads on your chairs and benches.
possible. You could add a lovely tie back to hook your curtains around – get what you can of that Vitamin D! Colours can alter in your home in these months, there’s less of the warm sun tones naturally streaming in, with more cloud and grey skies dulling your view, so bring in some sunshine. Warmer tones work in with your existing scheme in different ways, whether you add yellows and oranges, or pinks and purple shades, it depends what you already have to complement with, but adding colour can bring a whole new look to brighten your space. For tips and tricks, follow me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch. Sharon.
Dig out the candles and put a selection of different heights together on a charger, electric tealights in votives look gorgeous flickering through the darker evenings. Curtains are drawn sooner and we snuggle down for the evening and I love this, think about putting fringing or patterned edging on the bottom or inner edge for an extra layer, but in the day pull them wide to let in as much light as

Community Care
WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?
T
he world changed while we were busy living in it. When did we stop needing cash? When did menus become QR codes? When did we start talking to our watches, asking speakers what the weather will be like, and needing a password just to do almost anything?
— but how many do we actually print? Music was different too. You waited for your favourite song to come on the radio, cassette recorder at the ready, desperately hoping the DJ wouldn’t talk over the beginning. Albums were listened to from start to finish.
The strange thing about change is that it rarely happens all at once. It creeps in quietly while we’re busy getting on with life. Then one day you look around and realise just how different the world has become. Think about how much has changed within one lifetime. There was a time when leaving the house meant you were genuinely uncontactable. If you arranged to meet somebody outside a shop at 2pm, you simply had to be there. No text saying, “Running five minutes late.” No location sharing. No little blue ticks to tell you your message had been read and completely ignored. And somehow, everyone managed.
REMEMBER WHEN… Photographs were different. You might take 24 photographs during an entire holiday, send the film away and wait to discover whether you’d captured a beautiful family photograph or 24 slightly blurry pictures with someone’s thumb in the corner. But those photographs mattered. They went into albums, drawers and shoeboxes. Years later, finding one could transport you straight back to a particular day. Today we can take hundreds of photographs without giving it a second thought
20 | SKPoynton & Hazel Grove - October/November 2026
There were handwritten letters, birthday cards through the door and telephone numbers people actually knew by heart. If you wanted to know something, you couldn’t immediately Google it. You asked somebody. And sometimes they were completely wrong. The things that quietly disappeared, Of course, it isn’t about saying everything was better in the past. So many changes have made life easier. Families separated by hundreds or even thousands of miles can see one another on a screen. Shopping can arrive at the front door. Photographs of a new grandchild can be shared within seconds. But perhaps we’ve lost a few lovely things along the way too. The unexpected knock at the door. Knowing the people who lived along your street. Sitting around a table without a phone beside every plate. Continued on page 22
Community Care Going on holiday and actually being away from everything. Children playing outside until somebody shouted that tea was ready. And the rather wonderful freedom of having absolutely no idea what everybody else was doing. An extraordinary generation of change Sometimes older generations are described as being “bad with technology”. Perhaps we should look at that differently. People who grew up with a telephone attached to the wall are now expected to understand smartphones, apps, online banking, passwords, contactless payments, streaming services, QR codes and two-factor authentication. That’s quite an achievement when you think about it. Within one lifetime, we’ve gone from handwritten letters to instant messages. From vinyl records to almost every song ever recorded being available at the touch of a button. From looking things up in an encyclopaedia to asking a tiny device in the kitchen almost anything. From waiting days to develop photographs to seeing the face of a new grandchild seconds after they’re born. That’s not simply watching the world change, it’s learning how to live in a completely different one. But perhaps we can keep a few things. Progress is wonderful, but not everything old needs replacing. Maybe it’s still nice to receive a handwritten card. Maybe sometimes a telephone call is better than a text. Maybe children should know the stories behind the old photographs rather than simply scroll past them.
22 | SKPoynton & Hazel Grove - October/November 2026
And perhaps we should ask more questions of the people who remember the world before ours looked like this. What was Saturday night like when you were 20? What did your first week’s wages buy? Where did you go on your first holiday? What song takes you straight back to being young? Because those aren’t simply memories, they’re part of our history. And while the world will undoubtedly continue changing, I think we can all agree on one thing. Sometimes, when all you want is a cup of tea and a sandwich…a proper menu would be nice. Over to you… What is one completely ordinary thing from years gone by that has disappeared — and you’d bring back tomorrow if you could? I’d love to hear your memories, and perhaps we can share some of them in a future edition of SK Magazine. Either email me at Enquiries@connectcareservices.co.uk or pop in to our office at 38 Woodford Road, Bramhall, Stockport, England, SK7 1PA .

Beetroot with Tahini dressing This is one of those surprise recipes that everyone loves even though they normally avoid the star ingredient. Anyway, I’ve been asked for this recipe so many times that I thought getting it into SK magazine was as good a way as any of passing it on.
Beetroot with Tahini dressing 1kg raw beetroot 2tbsp olive oil 2tsp cumin seeds 1 red onion 1 preserved lemon 1 lemon
Put a little olive oil into a frying pan and add the cumin seeds – frying gently for about 3 minutes. Pour the seeds and oil over the beetroot. Peel and finely slice the onion (I use a mandolin), chop the preserved lemon removing the seeds as you go. Add both to the beetroot. Chop the dill (keeping some back for decoration) and add that to the beetroot too with the juice of the lemon. Season generously with salt and a little black pepper and give it a good stir to combine everything then put in into a serving dish.
1tbsp tahini
In a bowl combine the tahini and the yoghurt and dot over the beetroot and give is a very slight stir, top with the remaining dill and serve.
150g Greek yoghurt
I like it as part of a spread including roast meats.
15g of fresh dill
Pre heat the oven to 220 c (or use an air fryer) Scrub the beetroot but leave the skin on and lay them on a sheet of foil – drizzle with olive oil and then wrap them loosely in the foil and put into the oven for about 45 mins (maybe longer depending on size) They are cooked when a knife passes through them easily. When they are cool enough to handle – peel the skin off and slice into 0.5 cm slices and leave to cool completely. 26 | SKPoynton & Hazel Grove - October/November 2026

EASIEST SCENTED CUT FLOWERS FOR THE HOUSE
There is something wonderfully satisfying about bringing flowers from the garden into the house. While many of us think of roses, sweet peas or lilies when choosing scented flowers for cutting, there are two much easier and more reliable choices that are often overlooked: carnations and pinks.
Carnations and pinks are among the most troublefree plants I grow, and they reward very little effort with flowers throughout the summer. I particularly like growing them in pots, where they can be placed close to the house and easily picked when the flowers are at their best. I grow mine alongside herbs, which makes excellent use of space and creates a lovely combination of foliage, flowers and fragrance. The pots can be positioned on a patio, near a kitchen door or anywhere convenient for regular cutting. There is also something rather special about brushing past a pot and getting a waft of their fragrance. For me, one of the great advantages of carnations and pinks is their reliability. Once established, they will flower repeatedly, providing a succession of blooms for the house. Regular picking encourages the plants to produce more flowers, so the more you cut, the more you can enjoy. When cutting, choose stems with flowers that are just beginning to open. Cut in the cooler part of the day, preferably in the morning, and place
28 | SKPoynton & Hazel Grove - October/November 2026
the stems immediately into clean water. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline and change the water regularly. With a little care, the flowers will last well in a vase. The fragrance is perhaps their greatest attraction. Modern garden plants can sometimes be chosen for colour or form, but I always think we should make room for scent. A small posy of pinks or carnations on a kitchen table can fill the room with a gentle, old-fashioned perfume.
If you have never grown them for cutting, try a few pots next year, but buy them now and pot them into larger pots so they establish their roots for next year. You don’t need a large garden or a dedicated cutting bed. A handful of plants grown among your herbs can provide armfuls of scented flowers for the house. For an easy, dependable and fragrant source of cut flowers, carnations and pinks are difficult to beat. Happy Gardening! Kevin Pratt

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PILATES CLASS Thinking about trying Pilates but not sure where to start? With so many classes available, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you. Social media is full of impressive images of advanced Pilates exercises, but don’t be fooled into thinking that being able to perform difficult movements automatically makes someone a great teacher. The real skill lies in knowing how to teach those exercises safely, adapting them to suit different abilities, body types and learning styles. Here are a few things to look for when choosing a Pilates class. Choose a Qualified Instructor Look for an instructor who has completed comprehensive training with a recognised Pilates training provider accredited to UK Level 3 and the Society for the Pilates Method standards. Good instructors continue to develop their knowledge through regular workshops and their own Pilates practice. Don’t be afraid to ask about their qualifications and teaching experience. After all, you wouldn’t learn to drive with someone who trained in a weekend! A Good Instructor Adapts to You No two bodies are the same. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing a longterm condition or simply new to exercise, your instructor should be happy to offer modifications. Some people need an exercise made easier, while others are ready for an extra challenge. A quality class allows everyone to work at the right level without feeling left behind or pushed beyond their limits. If something doesn’t feel right or causes pain, always let your instructor know. Pilates should challenge you, but it should never hurt. Focus on Technique Pilates is all about quality rather than quantity. Clear instruction, breathing cues and gentle corrections help you perform each exercise safely and effectively. Good alignment is also essential. Your instructor should regularly refer to your posture, pelvis, ribcage, shoulders and head position, helping you develop greater body awareness that often carries over into everyday life.
32 | SKPoynton & Hazel Grove - October/November 2026
Alignment is Everything Pilates develops body awareness like few other forms of exercise. A good instructor will regularly talk about your posture and alignment, including your pelvis, ribcage, shoulders, head and neck. As your awareness grows, you’ll begin to notice habits and imbalances you may never have realised were there. Learning to move with better alignment doesn’t just improve your Pilates practice—it often makes everyday activities feel easier too. Be Patient Like any form of exercise, Pilates delivers the best results through consistency. With regular practice you’ll gradually notice improvements in strength, flexibility, balance, posture and confidence in the way you move. Mat Classes or One-to-One? Matwork is the most common form of Pilates and often incorporates small pieces of equipment such as resistance bands, balls or foam rollers to add support or increase the challenge. If you’re feeling nervous about joining a group, a one-to-one session can be an excellent introduction. It allows the programme to be tailored to your individual needs and helps build confidence before progressing to a class. Choosing the right instructor is just as important as choosing the right exercise. A supportive, knowledgeable teacher will help you move safely, improve your technique and enjoy the many benefits that Pilates has to offer. One of the greatest rewards of teaching Pilates is seeing clients become stronger, move more confidently and realise they’re capable of far more than they ever imagined. If you’ve been thinking about giving Pilates a try, there’s never been a better time to start. To find a qualified teacher, visit the Body Control Pilates website Jules Hardman Body Control Pilates Teacher www.jules-pilates-alderleyedge.co.uk
