Looking for a free day out this summer? Hansons’ grade-II listed Staffordshire saleroom is the perfect location – and you can get your treasures valued at the same time – writes TV auctioneer Charles Hanson. It is now several years since we expanded Derby-based Hansons Auctioneers into Staffordshire, when I purchased the Georgian mansion Bishton Hall in Wolseley Bridge.

You might know me from telly programmes like Bargain Hunt, Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip since 2002. But TV is only half the story. Because, for me, the real career highlights are not in front of the television cameras, they are on the rostrum and discovering hidden treasures. Nothing gives me more pleasure than unearthing forgotten heirlooms at valuation days. When people bring in what they think are worthless bits of costume jewellery their jaws drop when I tell them that it could be worth thousands. I knew Bishton Hall would be the perfect backdrop to stage country house sales and the ideal setting to showcase fine art and antiques – as well as find them. Every last Sunday of the month we host a ‘Super Sunday’ lifestyle sale at the hall – with the next on May 31 and then June 28 with viewing on the Saturday before from 10am-4pm and on the day of the sale from 10am. Midweek our team of experts also hosts free valuations in the main building. So if you’ve ever wondered about the story or value behind a treasured piece of jewellery, this is the perfect opportunity.
Kerri Keeling FGA DGA, our head of jewellery, silver and watches offers her expertise Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm with no appointment necessary. Whether it’s an inherited heirloom, an old jewellery box discovery or something you simply feel curious about, you’ll receive clear, professional advice.
Kerri is a fully qualified gemmologist, with specialist expertise in diamonds, coloured gemstones, antique and vintage jewellery, silver and watches. She brings both knowledge and careful attention to every piece she examines.
After a visit to Kerri you can carry on exploring this wonderful location.

The stunning grade II-listed building dates back the mid 18th century and, for a history fanatic like me with a passion for architecture, it is nothing short of magical.
Visitors can enjoy a stroll in the beautiful surrounding gardens, taking in the superb Temple Garden, which features one of the best Doric screens in the country. Best of all in these cash-strapped times, the whole experience – even the parking – is free.
If shopping is your thing, then the courtyard has some of the best boutiques around, housing even a local gin distillery.
And when you are ready for a sit down, the dog-friendly Sparrows tearoom is open every day from 10am-3pm offering one of the best – and biggest – afternoon teas I have every had.
So if you are looking for a free, dog-friendly day out for all the family take a trip to Bishton and, who knows, you might also discover you are sitting on an auction goldmine. If you wish to contact Kerri ahead of your visit, you can email kkeeling@hansonsauctioneers.co.uk or call 07702 084399. Bishton Hall and Garden is located at Bellamour Lane, Stafford, ST17 0XN.

Hydrangea paniculata is one of the true stars of the summer garden. While many shrubs burst into life in spring and fade by midsummer, this wonderful plant takes its time. It can seem slow to wake up after winter, often looking bare while other plants are already growing strongly. But patience is rewarded in spectacular fashion because by July, Hydrangea paniculata begins producing enormous coneshaped flower heads that continue right through until October.

Often described as looking like giant ice cream cones, the blooms are both elegant and dramatic. They stand proudly above the foliage and gradually change colour as the season progresses, giving months of interest in the garden. As summer turns to autumn, the flowers dry beautifully on the plant, adding structure and texture long after many other shrubs have finished.
One of the reasons Hydrangea paniculata has become so popular is its reliability. It is hardy, easy to grow, and performs well in most garden soils provided they are reasonably moist and well-drained. Unlike some other hydrangeas, it flowers on new wood, meaning it is less affected by late frosts and can be pruned confidently in late winter or early spring to encourage strong growth and larger blooms.
This month I am going to look at three of my favourite varieties, each bringing something unique to the garden.
First is Hydrangea ‘Limelight’, perhaps one of the best-known and most widely loved varieties. Its large flowers emerge a soft lime-green before gradually fading too creamy white. As the season develops, hints of pink can appear, especially in sunny positions. The fresh green and white colouring works beautifully in both modern and traditional gardens, and the flowers are excellent for cutting and drying.
Next is Hydrangea ‘Vanille Fraise’, a stunning variety whose name translates as “vanilla strawberry,” perfectly describing its colouring. The flower heads open creamy white before slowly turning shades of blush pink and deep strawberry red as autumn approaches. Often, several colours can appear on the same flower head at once, creating a truly eye-catching display. It adds warmth and romance to borders and pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses.

Finally, there is Hydrangea ‘Phantom’, known for producing some of the largest flower heads of all paniculata hydrangeas. Its huge creamy white blooms can reach impressive sizes and create a real statement in the garden. Despite their scale, the stems are sturdy and hold the flowers upright well. As autumn arrives, the blooms soften to gentle pink and ivory tones, extending the season of interest even further.
Hydrangea paniculata works wonderfully as a feature shrub, in mixed borders, or even planted in groups for a dramatic effect. It enjoys sun or partial shade and benefits from regular watering during dry spells, especially while establishing.
For gardeners looking for a dependable shrub that delivers months of spectacular flowers from midsummer into autumn, Hydrangea paniculata is hard to beat. It may be late to start, but once it begins flowering, it truly steals the show.
Happy Gardening!

Creating a cohesive design for a room is more than choosing things you like, if you just collect items that take your fancy it runs the risk of looking like it’s all been ‘plonked’ there. It’s blending colours, pattern and textures, building depth with similar tones and complementing colours, or putting plains with patterns for that pop of colour and style. Looking at the neutral sofa here, layers of similar tones with the fabrics showcase the calming atmosphere. The colours in the patterns are minimal with the sofa, curtains and walls plain. There’s a muted blue in the cushion, if you wanted to add a colour I’d go with this for the odd accessory, cushion or fleck in a rug.

The bedroom again is calming with the light, neutral tones in this bright room. The mural wall is a beautiful backdrop to the patterned headboard. Although similar in colour, the patterns, depth of cushioning and fabric and the border of pins separate them. The background mural isn’t as busy as the headboard pattern and the fabric has more warm tones in there with light beiges and creams. Lamps have been chosen for their pattern, then the bedding is plain white which draws your attention to the fabulous elevation. A wooden floor with a self patterned beige or cream rug would keep the space feeling
warm.
Now for colour – if you’re a big fan of dopamine décor, go for something like the pink chair for your seating. Here paired with an olive green lamp, neutral floor and English countryside mural. You can have an existing chair re-upholstered, changing the space completely. Plain walls and an open fire are the peripheral for this spectacular mustard sofa. The bones of this room are very hard – it’s all stone, glass and plaster – then softened completely with the curves of the furniture upholstered in a soft mustard, fur effect rounded chairs, upholstered footstools and the textured rug. It’s a cosy retreat full of beautiful warm tones.
For tips and tricks, follow me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch.
Sharon.

Adiagnosis of dementia can feel overwhelming, both for the individual and their loved ones. It is often associated with loss—of memory, independence, and identity. However, it is important to remember that a diagnosis does not mean life stops. With the right support, environment, and mindset, people living with dementia can continue to enjoy meaningful, fulfilling lives.
One of the most effective ways to support someone with dementia is by focusing on what they can do, rather than what they have lost. Abilities may change over time, but many people retain skills, preferences, and emotional connections. Encouraging independence, even in small daily tasks like dressing, preparing simple meals, or choosing activities, can help maintain confidence and a sense of purpose.

“He is a very special client to us in Bramhall, living with dementia, and we are proud to support him with several visits throughout the day.”
Establishing a consistent routine is another key factor in living well with dementia. Familiar patterns provide comfort and reduce confusion or anxiety. Simple habits such as waking up, eating meals, and going to bed at the same time each day can create a reassuring structure. Keeping the home environment predictable— by leaving commonly used items in the same place—can also make daily life easier to navigate. Memory aids can be incredibly helpful in supporting day-to-day functioning. Calendars, clocks, labelled cupboards, and reminder notes can act as gentle prompts. Technology can also play a role, with smartphone alarms or voice assistants offering reminders for appointments or medication. These tools promote independence while reducing frustration.
Staying physically and mentally active is equally important. Gentle exercise, such as walking or stretching, can improve mood, sleep, and overall health. Activities like listening to music, doing puzzles, reading, or engaging in hobbies can stimulate the brain and provide enjoyment.
Often, activities connected to past interests or routines are the most meaningful and comforting.
Social interaction should not be overlooked. Maintaining relationships with family and friends can help reduce feelings of isolation and support emotional wellbeing. Even simple conversations, shared meals, or short visits can make a significant difference. Community groups or dementia-friendly activities can also provide opportunities for connection in a supportive environment.
Equally important is creating a safe and supportive living space. Small adjustments—such as removing trip hazards, improving lighting, and using clear signage—can enhance safety and confidence. A calm, clutter-free environment can help reduce confusion and agitation.
Finally, patience and understanding are essential. Dementia affects everyone differently, and there will be good days and more challenging ones. Responding with reassurance, rather than correction, can help maintain dignity and reduce distress. It is not about getting everything right, but about creating moments of comfort, connection, and joy.
Living well with dementia is about adapting, not giving up. By making small, thoughtful changes and focusing on strengths, it is possible to support a life that remains rich in meaning, dignity, and human connection.

From safari landscapes to Mediterranean coastlines, the small screen is sparking big travel plans. Have you ever finished an episode and wondered, “Where was that filmed?” You’re not alone. From sweeping mountains to vibrant cities, television and film have an incredible way of turning locations into must-visit destinations.

This month’s programmes are delivering serious inspiration. Whether it’s Vietnam’s cultural richness or the Caribbean’s luxury, the small screen is quietly shaping our travel dreams.
Vietnam: Culture, Cuisine and Coastlines
Bill Bailey’s Vietnam (Channel 4) showcases a country bursting with character. From Hanoi’s buzzing street food to tranquil rural escapes, the series highlights Vietnam’s remarkable diversity. For travellers, this might mean cruising Ha Long Bay, exploring historic towns with a local guide, or embarking on a culinary journey through the country’s vibrant markets.
Caribbean Luxury on the Water
The latest series of Below Deck Down Under (Hayu) swaps Australia for the ultra-exclusive island of Canouan in St Vincent and the Grenadines. With crystalline waters and luxury yachts, the Caribbean is shown at its most glamorous—perfect inspiration for elegant island hopping, villa stays, or a private charter.
The American West Reimagined
Filmed around Utah’s Park City Mountain Resort, Marshals: A Yellowstone Story (Paramount+) captures the dramatic alpine landscapes of the American West. Vast horizons and rugged scenery provide the backdrop for adventure, whether that’s a national park road trip, a luxury ranch stay, or a winter ski escape.
The Colour and Energy of India
In Alexander Armstrong in India (Channel 5), viewers travel through Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, and Bengaluru. The series offers a glimpse into the country’s vast diversity—from historic forts and grand palaces to bustling modern cities and unforgettable cuisine.
Safari Dreams in Botswana
Big Cats 24/7 (BBC iPlayer) delivers remarkable wildlife footage from Botswana’s open plains. Lions and cheetahs roam freely across breathtaking landscapes, offering a powerful reminder of why safari experiences remain some of the world’s most unforgettable journeys.
European City Break Inspiration
Barcelona takes centre stage in The Heat (ITV2), celebrating the city’s food culture and Mediterranean charm. With striking architecture and rooftop terraces overlooking the sea, Barcelona remains one of Europe’s most appealing short-break destinations.
Adventure in New Zealand
Set against spectacular landscapes, The Summit (ITV) showcases New Zealand’s dramatic mountains and remote wilderness. It’s a destination made for exploration, from scenic road trips through fjords to guided hiking adventures and helicopter flights over glaciers.
Greek Island Escapes and Regency Elegance
The ever-popular Mamma Mia (Netflix) continues to inspire with sun-soaked scenes filmed on Skopelos and Skiathos, capturing the timeless appeal of the Greek islands. Meanwhile, Bridgerton (Netflix) highlights the graceful Georgian architecture of Bath and other historic UK locations, inspiring travellers drawn to heritage and classic English charm.
Wherever your latest screen-inspired destination may be, turning that spark of inspiration into a truly memorable journey is where thoughtful planning makes all the difference. Sometimes, all it takes is one unforgettable scene to start the adventure.

1 Lemon
2 tbsp tahini
2 tbsp cold water
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
150g Greek yoghurt
Handful of mint leaves finely chopped
things to do with it)

Zest and juice half the lemon into a bowl then add the tahini. Pour in the water and the olive oil. Stir until smooth adding a pinch of salt as you go. Spoon in the yoghurt and mint leaves and stir through. Keep refrigerated until you want to use it.
Cut 2 small romaine lettuce in half ditching the outer tatty leaves and keeping the root in tact. Rub the cut side with olive oil and some salt. Heat a frying pan or your BBQ to a very high heat and cook until charred. Put on a platter then drizzle with the sauce. Garnish with some dill or extra chopped mint.
Broad bean, Pea and Green Bean salad.
Blanche your vegetables in boiing water for a few minutes (I like to pod the broad beans so you get the uber green beans inside the outer dull shell) Blanche the green beans last. Transfer to iced water to cool completely then drain. Mix together in your serving bowl and drizzle over plenty of the sauce and toss through. Garnish with mint and parsley and serve.
This sauce is also good with a clove of garlic grated into it and then drizzled over charred lamb chops or chicken kebabs.
Enjoy

Being a landlord had never been a completely handsoff investment, but in 2026 it’s fair to say the role is becoming more...… involved. Between tax changes, rising costs, and with impending new regulations on the horizon, it’s a good time to take stock and make sure nothing catches you off guard.

MTD for Income Tax replaces the traditional Let’s start with the issue that continues to bite: mortgage interest relief. Gone are the days when finance costs could simply be deducted from rental income. Instead, landlords now receive just a basic rate tax credit. While that may not sound too painful, in practice it often means higher taxable profits and, for many, a bigger tax bill—particularly for higher rate taxpayers. Add in higher interest rates, and it’s easy to see why margins are feeling squeezed.
And it’s not just finance costs. General expenses are also increasing. Repair and maintenance costs, and compliance requirements all seem to be heading in one direction and rental income doesn’t always keep pace. The result is that profitability is under more pressure than many landlords have been used to.
On top of this, there’s a change that affects how landlords report their income. From April 2026, those with rental income over £50,000 will fall within the new Making Tax Digital for Income Tax mechanism. In simple terms, this means moving from one annual tax return to a system of digital record-keeping and quarterly updates to HMRC. It’s a shift that may feel like extra admin at first, but it should also mean fewer last-minute scrambles and a clearer view of your tax position throughout the year.
Then there’s Capital Gains Tax to consider, especially for those thinking about selling a residential property. The rules haven’t changed dramatically recently, but the reduced annual exemption and the requirement to report and pay tax within 60 days of a disposal mean that planning ahead is more important than ever.
A well-timed sale can still make a noticeable difference to the final tax bill.
Alongside all of this sits the much-discussed Renters’ Rights Act 2025. This is about to introduce some of the biggest changes the sector has seen in years. The abolition of Section 21 “no-fault” evictions is the headline change, alongside a broader shift towards stronger tenant rights and more structured tenancy arrangements.
For landlords, this doesn’t mean panic—but it does mean preparation. Processes for regaining possession are likely to become more formal, and expectations around property standards will continue to rise. In practice, that means good record-keeping, clear agreements, and keeping well-maintained properties will become even more important.
Finally, energy efficiency remains one to watch. While deadlines have moved around, the general direction is clear: the requirement for higher standards is coming, so investing in improvements now could help spread the cost and avoid a last-minute rush later.
So, what’s the takeaway? In 2026, being a landlord is less about sitting back but more about staying organised. The good news is that with a bit of forward planning and the right advice, most of these changes are manageable. And while the rules may keep evolving, a well-run property portfolio can still deliver solid long-term returns—even if it requires a little more attention than it used to.

Recently I was asked the question who are my ideal clients? Whilst I usually advocate Pilates is suitable for everybody regardless of fitness or age I think my answer - Post Natal and Menopausal womensurprised them.
My ideal client isn’t defined by fitness or age but what they are going through and what they are looking for. These two groups of women are navigating important life transitions and need to feel strong, supported and confident in their bodies. What is Post Natal Pilates?

Post Natal Pilates is designed specifically for women after giving birth. It focuses on restoring muscle function safely rather than pushing intensity.
Postnatal Pilates helps rebuild core strength, particularly the deep abdominal muscles that support your body after pregnancy. It can also support the healing and management of diastasis recti, while strengthening the pelvic floor, which is essential for bladder control and overall stability.
Regular practice improves posture – especially helpful when feeding and carrying your baby – and can help reduce common aches such as back, neck, and hip pain. As well as the physical benefits, Pilates also supports mental wellbeing by reducing stress and helping you feel calmer, more balanced and more connected to your body.
Two significant factors for women going through the menopause are cardiovascular health and bone strength. Maintaining physical activity not only helps address but also protect against these conditions. It’s important to mention that menopause isn’t the cause of cardiovascular disease but often the lifestyle changes that commonly occur in this period of life that increase your risk.
Cardiovascular activities can be tricky during the
menopause if you are experiencing hot flushes. This should not put you off exercising though as 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week can improve your health risks.
Pilates is one of the most effective and sustainable ways to support your body through menopause. As hormones shift, your body response differently to exercise and Pilates meets that change with low-impact strength, control and recovery.
For menopausal women, the focus shifts towards supporting long-term health, building resilience, and helping them feel good in their bodies again. This includes addressing key considerations such as hormonal changes that affect strength, energy, and mood, maintaining bone density to help prevent osteoporosis, improving joint mobility, managing changes in weight distribution, and supporting stress and sleep.
Across both postnatal and menopausal women, the common thread is the need for gentle but progressive strength, alongside education, reassurance, breathwork, and nervous system regulation - all within a supportive and nonjudgemental environment.

Are you a parent exploring orthodontic options for your teenager? Fixed braces remain one of the most effective and reliable solutions for straightening teeth and correcting bite issues in teenagers and young adults. At our dental practice, we offer expert fixed brace treatments tailored specifically for teenagers, ensuring they achieve a healthier, more confident smile. Unlike removable aligners, fixed braces work consistently to move teeth into their ideal positions, making them especially effective for more complex orthodontic cases. Also, because brackets are bonded permanently, treatment progresses steadily without reliance on remembering to wear removable devices. Your teen will even get to wear them in their favourite colour!
Dental implants offer a fixed solution for missing or failing teeth. Unlike dentures, they feel just like your own teeth and as they are not removable, they give patients the freedom to enjoy foods that are difficult to eat when wearing dentures.
As you can see, fixed braces produce amazing smile transformations (these are all cases from younger patients)
A dental implant is a titanium post that acts as a prosthetic tooth root surgically placed into the jawbone. We use medical-grade titanium because it’s strong and light, but also because it has the ability to fuse with living bone.
Fixed braces for teenagers are an effective and reliable way to correct dental and bite issues, helping your teen achieve a beautiful, functional smile that lasts a lifetime. If you’re considering orthodontic treatment for your teen, contact our practice today for a consultation. We’re here to guide you through every step and help your teenager enjoy the confidence of a radiant smile, and with the added benefit of no long waiting lists.

Once the implant has fused with the surrounding bone tissue, it can be used as a foundation for a replacement tooth secured to the top of the dental implant. It can also support multiple implants such as bridges or dentures. Implants can be used to replace all of a patient’s missing or failing teeth in what we call an all-on-four procedure where patients have all their teeth removed and replaced with implants the very same day, giving them a ‘same day smile’ where they walk away with a brand-new smile, in just one day.
For natural-looking and secure replacement teeth, patients visit us for dental implants from near and far. After the implants are placed, patients find that their eating and speaking ability has improved significantly, along with their confidence to smile again. That’s why dental implants are the gold standard for missing teeth replacement.
Contact our friendly team on 0161-486-0743 if you require any further information.
