Welcome to the October / November issue of SK Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle. With Summer drawing to a close I thought this cover would brighten up people’s doormat. I love Autumn and the wonderful colours it brings. So, remember to keep up those steps and enjoy the lovely walks we have on our doorsteps.

This month Interior Design Page 24

This month we have some great articles from our regulars covering, the essentials a beginner needs for sewing, music memories for people suffering from dementia and plenty more. Please remember to contact the organisers of the events and activities we have in the magazine. People and groups will be going at their own pace so it’s best to check up before you go than be disappointed on the day. Grab a brew and I hope you enjoy the read. Cheers

TOP BEDROOM STORAGE IDEAS

s I write this, the housing market has a huge supply and demand problem. Usual amount of demand, not enough supply. That means that, for the moment, we’re all staying put. Perhaps it’s the unusual times we’re living in, perhaps we want some stability right now, whatever it is, it means that we need our homes to work for us now more than ever. Our bedrooms, no matter what our age, should be a calming and beautiful sanctuary. Now, how can that be the case if every time you open a cupboard you’re met with an avalanche of ‘stuff’? Clothes for every eventuality of our British weather, odd shoes, bedding, jewellery, the vacuum! You name it, we squeeze it in. Don’t worry, in my experience of working with people in their homes, this is just about everybody. There’s never enough space (it’s definitely not that we have too many clothes) (or shoes!). There are easy and practical solutions. I don’t mean just throwing a load of shelves up from a well known Swedish home store that will look generic and fall apart quicker than a wet Digestive. It can be stylish and a gorgeous addition to your bedroom décor. Behind your bed is a missed opportunity. People may hang a picture but moving the bed out just a few inches or more if you can spare it, creates a large, shallow surface area. Sliding doors and

shelves, perfect for books, jewellery, make up etc. The top can hold your lamp, books, perfume etc. The fronts can be panelled, painted plain or stencilled. There are lots of good stencils on the market that are easy to use. Another very simple and massively missed opportunity is the bedside table. Traditionally it’s a small unit, one drawer that holds, well, rubbish really along with your bedtime reading, pop your lamp on top and that’s it. Replace it with a small sideboard and voila, you have tons of room. Take a look around at what is going for a small price and repurpose it, paint, take a door off, or have something fabulous made to measure. Either will look fantastic and be much roomier. One of my favourites for a mountain of extra storage is a high shelf. They don’t take anything off the room as they’re way above the eye-line. You can use pretty boxes, not too many of these or they look cluttered. Just putting all of your books up there will look like a library for tall people. Break it up, add vases, plants and picture. Colour co-ordinate things to add interest, use string lights to draw attention to something, use different levels with a taller picture frame, a few books, next to a hanging plant. Faux plants are great here so you don’t need to think about watering them. If you need any help I’m here.

Time to spark a windfall? Hansons’ experts are heading back to Cheshire in Autumn in search of auction treasures It’s time to look through those attics, cupboards and drawers because Hansons experts are coming back to Cheshire in Autumn and we can’t wait. Lockdowns put our free pop-up valuation events on hold but life has gradually returned to normal and we’re delighted to be returning to The Coach & Four, 69/71 Alderley Road, Wilmslow, SK9 1PA. Free valuations will be available there on October 21 and November 18, 11am-2pm. So, what should you bring along for assessment? Well, it could be anything from a Chinese treasure, painting, designer watch, jewellery, coin, toy or medal to a match-worn football shirt or Pokémon game. Gaming consoles and vintage video games have been in hot demand at auction throughout lockdown but auction sales are buoyant generally. People with money and time to spare from all over the world love to bid online. Antiques, collectables and jewellery fire the imagination and are desired for all manner of reasons by all kinds of people. For example, interior designers love to scour our home décor and furniture items in search of something special for clients, and our summer Clock Auction was a good hunting ground for them. The star lot, a French travelling alarm clock by famous French maker Antide Javier, made £6,200 - three times its top estimate - in a battle between American and French bidders. Javier worked from 1751 to 23a French 1835 and was known for travelling alarm clock by Antide his fine, astronomical and Janvier SOLD £6,200 planetary clocks. MUSIC MEMORIES

f I had to make a choice to live without the TV or Music, I would choose music every time. The reason being is that music brings me so much joy and hearing a certain tune can take me straight back to a happy place and time in an instant. It has the ability to recall particular emotions and change our mood, that’s quite a powerful thing. When you dig a bit deeper into this subject you find that there is a lot of research into the positive impact of music and our well-being. I have learnt that listening to music reactivates areas of the brain associated with memory, reasoning, speech and emotion. Harvard Health Blog reports music listeners had higher scores for mental well-being compared to people overall and active musical engagement, including those over age 50, was associated with higher rates of happiness and cognitive function. The reason music is such a powerhouse is that it has been shown to activate some of the broadest and most diverse networks of the brain. This connection between music and memory is also recognised as a way to benefit people with dementia, helping to improve psychological symptoms such as depression, agitation or aggression. NHS England covers this topic on its website, writing how it can ‘enhance the quality of life of people living with dementia.’ This aspect of music and memory is very much of interest as what we learn we can share with our care team, clients and their family members

12 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - October/November 2021

too. As part of our own research, I came across Music4d Radio (Music for Dementia). A group of 5 themed radio stations available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year playing music that evokes memories. It’s a brilliant idea that was developed as a direct response to the impact of Covid-19 lockdown measures. You can choose your birth year to listen to the musical decade where your musical memories were made, typically from our early teen years through to our late twenties. The site gives you the option to listen live or at another time and you can even build your own schedule. I highly recommend this site www.music4d.com for anyone with dementia their carers, family and friends. Supporting someone with dementia can be challenging at times but listening and reminiscing to music together is one way to change the mood.

ST ANN’S HOSPICE RECEIVE CHEQUE FOR £22,000 FROM BRAMALL PARK GOLF CLUB

n Tuesday 31st August the CEO of St Ann’s Hospice, Rachel McMillan along with Greg Kelly and Sarah Wolstenholme, Community Fundraisers, met with the Captains of Bramall Park Golf Club, Patricia Philip and Simon Wheatley, to receive a donation cheque to the sum of £22,000. “St Ann’s is one of the oldest and largest hospices in the country, celebrating our 50th birthday in 2021 and the last 18 months have been a challenge to us as it has been for many people. We offer care and support to thousands of people living with or affected by life limiting illness and we have to raise £20,000 a day just to keep our doors open. It is thanks to the team at Bramall Park Golf Club who have supported us over many years with a staggering total of over £223,000 raised and this year with an amazing £22,000. We can’t thank them enough for their continued support so we can continue to care for and support those who need us most.” Rachel McMillan CEO In June each year Bramall Park Golf Club hosts an Amateur golfing competition with all proceeds going to the hospice. This year 59 teams paid to enter which was a record 236 players on the day. Despite the weather being rather wet and windy the players bravely faced the challenge of the course. The halfway house was a welcome stopping point where players could enjoy a drink and delicious homemade cakes followed by a BBQ and a few celebratory drinks when they got back to the clubhouse. As a sign of support

and appreciation for the hospice the collection tins were full to the brim with cash donations. There was a fabulous raffle and an auction with over 70 prizes; all donated by club members and local businesses from the Bramhall and Cheadle Hulme area. Thanks go to club members and players who purchased raffle tickets and to those who placed generous bids against the auction prizes. The proceeds from the raffle and auction all contributed towards the fabulous total raised on the day. Finally, the club would like to thank all the local businesses who sponsored holes around the course and placed advertising in the event programme and to the large team of members who volunteered to help on the day to ensure everything ran smoothly and on time. Congratulations to the winners Sam Lynch, Scott Wrigley, Andy Hurst and Michael Meecham with a great score of 102 points. Captain Simon Wheatley said “ Bramall Park Golf Club and its members remain very committed to continuing to raise as much money as possible for St Ann’s Hospice and we already have a date in the diary of 24th June to host the event next year. If you are interested in advertising, sponsoring, donating a prize or entering a team please contact Jill Thomas on jill.thomas5057@gmail.com”.

MOJO VERDE 3 cloves of garlic

6 tbsps of freshly chopped coriander

1 slice of stale bread

1 small green chilli

4 tablespoons of good quality olive oil plus a bit extra for frying

In a pestle and mortar mash the garlic, cayenne, cumin and paprika together until you have a smooth paste. At this point you can put it in a processor and whizz in the bread, vinegar and salt. Mindset Advice ARE YOU A ‘HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON’ (HSP) Are you a Highly Sensitive Person? This might seem a strange way to title an article, and I suppose it is really, but nonetheless, I bet there are quite a few of you reading this thinking “well, actually, yes, I think I am!” By ‘Highly Sensitive Person’ (HSP), I am referring specifically to a personality type identified by Dr Elaine Aron in her research which began in 1991, rather than to people who simply feel they are sensitive. The questionnaire to determine someone’s true status can be found on her website www.hsperson.com Generally, a HSP will be more aware of subtleties in their environment and in the moods and needs of others. They will be more bothered by high levels of stimulation such as crowds, loud noises or chaos around them and they are usually very thoughtful and observant, often needing time alone to process their thoughts and feelings. About 70% of HSP are introverts. On average for every 5 people who read this, one of you will be highly sensitive. It is important to point out at this stage that being a HSP is not a negative thing, it is simply a personality type, and many people who learn how to understand and harness their sensitivity will thrive and even start to see it as somewhat of a super-power. But why am I talking about this? The reason is, that I work predominantly in the mental health sector, and since the start of the pandemic, I have noticed that a large majority of my clients are HSP, despite HSP making up only 20% of the population. This led me to think that HSP may need more support to thrive in the modern world than non-HSP. I subsequently discovered that Dr Aron herself found in 2010 that 50% of people seeking support with mental health are HSP. Based on my experience in 2020 and 2021 however, I would say it could be a lot higher than this right now.

26 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - October/November 2021

Why is this the case? The reason for this trend is firstly because the world just isn’t structured to suit the minority in any category. Disabled access to schools and workplaces is still not available as standard in the UK, so it is hardly a surprise that the world isn’t structured to suit the HSP minority, and nor will it ever be. Secondly, the restrictions and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic have destabilised the structures and support networks which HSP depend on more than others, thus affecting them more, and further increasing the number and percentage of HSP seeking help with their mental health. Unfair as this seems, society simply will not address this situation, and it is down to the individuals to seek further knowledge and help to enable themselves to thrive. I would recommend that all readers of this article take the questionnaire on Dr Aron’s website, and then, if you are a HSP (you can test your children too), to educate yourself on what this means for you and how you can use it to your advantage using the many resources outlined on her website. This can bring almost immediate relief to your life. If you have any questions at all then please get in touch with me through my website or you can join the many HSP communities available to you online. Remember, the first stage in helping yourself is empowerment through knowledge; ignorance is not bliss. It has been a tough 18 months for all of us, particularly the HSP, so the time to act is now.

What sewing essentials does a beginner need?

have often been asked, ‘What sewing essentials does a beginner need?’ There is so much to choose from, and what does a sewer really need? Here are my essentials;

1 - Tailoring / Dressmaking shears. These shears lie flat against the table, with the handle, pivoted upward. This makes it easier to keep fabric on the surface as you cut. The angled handle makes it easier to hold, so no more uncomfortable wrist bends. 2 - Box Set of Thread. A good thread makes a huge difference to the finished result and the life of a project, and in fact can make a huge difference in your sewing machine (or hand sewing). The weight and the twist are a complicated math mystery, so just go with a brand name you can trust, like Gutermann, Coats and Mettler. Gutermann now make their threads from recycled plastic!

3 - Seam Gauge / Rulers are something I use often. Measuring small areas, hems and cuffs, zip widths, seam allowances and even drawing around patchwork pieces is so much easier with a ruler.

28 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - October/November 2021

4 - A Clapper is hugely under rated and under used. I use mine on almost everything I press (crucial to a great finish). A clapper is just a piece of hard wood (Beech is ideal - look in timbers yard). Watch my YouTube tutorial on how to make one for you. 5 - A mini iron and teflon finger tips for a crisp edge and finish. The teflon fingers are a great plus to save your fingertips from scalding, or when you need to hold onto the fabric very close to the iron. Try to stay eco-friendly. Many products are still sold in plastic blister packs. We want to steer clear of those companies and encourage the wave of newcomers, endorsing a much greener way. So, if you’re looking to buy a gift for someone special (and that’s right - I am talking about you! :-) ), then look me up on Youtube for great time saving tips and inexpensive ways to achieve great results in your projects. Keep up-cycling, and repurposing. Local thrift and charity shops have wonderful sewing sections, filled with patterns and fabrics. Have a great sewing day and keep smiling! Pilates is a great way to get in shape this October...

ollowing months of lockdown face-to-face Pilates classes are resuming. It’s been a long wait and many are eager to get back to group classes to meet up with friends and get back to activities. Still a little uncertain about returning to face-to-face classes? Then why not try an online Pilates class. I really enjoy teaching online and through Zoom I’ve been able to interact with clients surprisingly well. Here’s why Pilates is a great way to get in shape this Autumn... The Benefits of Pilates A Pilates class can go a long way to helping prevent injury. Pilates is a fitness system that improves flexibility, builds strength and develops core strength, control and endurance in the entire body. What Pilates classes are there? Pilates Matwork Classes The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles. High Intensity Power Pilates HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout. Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout.

Anyone with knee or hip problems would benefit hugely from the precise nature of the weight-bearing lunges and squats. Emphasis is on tracking the knees over toes at all times, therefore strengthening the quads. The class is fast paced, but importantly LOW impact. Therefore, you will increase your heart rate safely whilst burning fat, strengthening your lungs and building lean muscle mass. The class also uses light hand weights, which improve bone health. One-to-One Pilates Classes Concerned about being the new student? Then a one-to-one class can be a good way to start. Both the session format and the exercises given are tailored to suit your needs and objectives. These sessions allow for greater progression and development and are a must for anyone requiring that individual attention. Pilates is for life and can be life changing, so whether you choose a face-to-face class or Zoom make sure you take some me-time and join a Pilates class now!

Can veneers be an option for you? A drill free, injection free, pain free smile makeover that can be done in just one appointment. This was one of the many cases that we have done where we have used composite bonding to transform a patient’s smile, and these amazing results were achieved in just one visit to the practice. We used composite edge bonding over a single session to give the patient’s teeth straighter edges and a smoother surface appearance, and also cover the discolouration and flecking. This created a natural, aligned smile without having to damage the patient’s own teeth. This is a popular simple and very effective treatment that we offer. It is reversible and the beauty of it is that it can take years off your smile, without the need for undergoing long, invasive and costly procedures. If you would like to know more about this treatment, or any others that we offer, please give us a on 0161-486-0743 to book in for a free non-obligation consultation. You can also see lots of examples of our work, as well as lots of information videos about various treatments following our Instagram page, @churchrddental.
