Welcome to the October / November issue of SK Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle. Well things are very slowly getting back to normal at the SK offices.

We have some great articles from our regular contributors.

They cover auctions, interior design, recipes, community care, sewing and Pilates. Hopefully there will be something inside to inspire you to get up and join in.

I’ve been asking some local businesses to let me know what they have been up to during the lockdown. This month rainbow88’s Linda Lam has sent in a letter (well email really) highlighting the great work undertaken by her team and the local businesses and people donating money, products and time. Linda has raised over £300,000 for local charities over the years; a truly unbelievable lady.

The full story is on page 22. Also remember rainbow88 is back open for dining or takeaways with all track & trace rules being adhered too.

We have four pages of events in and around the area along with two pages of Children’s Activities this month.

Please do check any events you plan to go to first, as things are changing on a daily basis at the moment.

MAKING ROOM FOR THE PERFECT HOME T he government have instructed us to work from home wherever possible resulting in approx. 60% of UK’s adult population currently managing this. Many have found themselves crammed in, school work, careers and dinner competing for space.

Bedrooms morphing into the office and the laundry room and it’s driving some crazy.

If you have the budget and energy to up sticks and move to a bigger or better laid out house, great. Alternatively there are clever ways to create what you need quite economically. Reclaim areas and spruce up your tired, overused space.I’m working on a project currently where the house felt full to bursting and dinner (tea?

How Northern are we here?) was eaten in relay at a cafe style shelf in the kitchen or on your lap. The dining table was full of school work plus a laptop, another laptop for one adult with piles of papers, ironing piles, unloved shelves of ‘stuff’ and a corner that the dog enjoyed. The kitchen looked comparatively small next door and another adult was hiding behind a third laptop in the lounge.

They were daunted at the thought of finding builders and tradesmen. Measuring up and a chat about what they needed created ideas to merge these two rooms. Just knocking down the wall wouldn’t fix everything. Look at the space, make a list of what is necessary, think about how you would use the kitchen diner, where the light comes in, where will the radiators go, will you need new flooring, lighting, a new kitchen?

By using your budget wisely it can be done cost effectively. I’m bricking up a back door (less light but more useable), opening a wall (more light from a better direction), an extra wall in

the kitchen is available as the cafe style shelf table is redundant (more units and much needed worktop), only a few sq metres of wood flooring requires replacing, a new kitchen with a dishwasher (bonus) are costed but aren’t breaking the bank. By using few top cupboards with shelves for the rest breaks it up and helps keep it open whilst saving pounds.

We can reuse many appliances, choose plainer more modern cabinets and get cool handles off the internet.

Alcoves in the dining room will house cupboards to hide the day’s work, the ironing and it’s now an easy transition from the kitchen to set the table up for everyone to eat together.

Even the dog got a hideaway with a simple built in cupboard above his majesty’s bed.

We can often work with the footprint of what we have to create the perfect home to live in.

Meetings are from 2pm to 4pm and each week we have a speaker talking and showing slides sometimes on a whole range of subjects. We have a yearly membership fee and there is a weekly entrance of £1, which includes tea/coffee and biscuit.

Best Foot Forward walks are free, low impact walks lasting between 30 minutes and an hour and finish at a café for tea and a chat afterwards. They provide a supportive and sociable environment for people who’ve been affected by breast cancer (including family members and friends). Best Foot Forward health walks take place every other Friday and every other Saturday. Time to sell that vintage watch? Demand for classic timepieces stuns at auction.

I

f time in lockdown has uncovered a vintage watch gathering dust you could have reason to smile - it just might earn you hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

Watches have been big news in the auction world in recent years but their allure never diminishes. In fact, it grows ever stronger with the passage of time.

We were reminded of that with a bang worthy of Big Ben when our online-only Silver, Jewellery and Watches Auction raced to success. Despite lockdown, despite worldwide recession fears, bidders were out in force.

And the glittering stars of the show were vintage watches from the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and even 2005. They dominated our best sellers’ list on the day, occupying five places in the auction Top 10 prices achieved, including the number one and two spots.

Lot 175 sold for £12,500

At number one was lot 175, a rare, circa 2005, gents self-winding 18ct gold Omega Speedmaster Broad Arrow watch which reached £12,500.

Its guide price was £5,000-£8,000.

In the number two spot was lot 178, a circa 1992 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date GMT - Master II stainless steel and yellow metal man’s bracelet watch which made £5,600 from a guide price of £4,000.

Then there was lot 189, a ladies’ 18ct gold Rolex Oyster-Perpetual Superlative Chronometer watch which sailed to £3,000 and was snapped up an international buyer.

Its estimate was £1,500-£2,000.

Another hit was lot 184, a gentleman’s bi-metal Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust wristwatch which made £2,800, comfortably above its £1,500-£2,000 estimate.

And never imagine a family heirloom Lot 184 sold from decades ago is worthless. for £2,800 Lot 164, a 1960s gentleman’s International Watch Company Schaffhausen Ingenieur automatic watch, with leather strap and some inevitable wear and tear, sold for £2,600.

As well as being sought-after collectors’ items, when the pound Lot 164 sold for £2,600 plunged against the dollar and Euro after the Brexit vote, UK auctions became attractive hunting grounds for international buyers thanks to favourable exchange rates. Some international buyers were immediately paying around 20% less when buying from the UK and little has changed since.

But there are other factors, too. The fast-growing pre-owned luxury watch market is enjoying a global surge in popularity. This increase has been spurred by younger, ecologically conscious buyers who prefer pre-loved, sustainable items rather than buying new.

Plus, interest in luxury goods is as strong as ever and the aspirational goal to own a timepiece such as a Rolex is made possible by sourcing them at auction. It provides an affordable way to start a collection at entry-level prices.

COVID-19 –

CLEAR ADVICE FOR OLDER PEOPLE

W

e have all come to realise that we will be living alongside the COVID-19 virus for some-time. We have also come to realise that living safely alongside COVID-19 means quickly adapting to the changes from government, scientific and medical advisors; as they respond to data and evidence. We now find ourselves regularly being given new rules and guidelines and are often asked to adopt them very quickly.

This can lead to confusion and uncertainty, especially for older people in our society, who are considered high risk.

It is very important that the messages are clear and concise, can be easily understood and cut through ‘the jargon’.

Whilst the Government and NHS websites have general information, I always find that Age UK is a good source of reference specifically designed with older people in mind. They explain the terminology that’s being used, clearly and what it means in reality to our day to day lives.

For example; ‘Social Distancing’ - limiting our contact with people outside of our household and taking precautions to stay safe when going out and adhering to the 2m and 1m distance rules. Everyone should be following these guidelines. However, if you are over 70 or have existing health conditions you may want to take extra precautions, such as only meeting up with people in outside spaces or visiting places at times where they are likely to be less busy.

‘Shielding’ - from the 1st August 2020 shielding ended. However, for those considered clinically

extremely vulnerable and previously advised to shield the message is to follow strict social distancing guidelines. This also applies if you are over 70 or living with a long-term health condition as you are at increased risk from coronavirus. It is accepted that going outside more often will bring with it some risk but for many people the benefits to their mental and physical well-being will outweigh this.

Deciding what you are comfortable with is a personal choice and you shouldn’t feel pressured into doing anything more than you want to. If you do want to take extra precautions, there are some things you can do, these include; Meet up with people outdoors, as the risk of transmission is lower outside than inside.

If you do meet up with people outside of your household in an indoor space, it is best to do so in larger, well-ventilated places. If you go to other people’s houses or have people to yours, open windows to let air in.

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE

T

he University of the Third Age (U3A) movement is a unique and exciting International organisation, which provides, through its local branches, life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities.

Photography and Poetry. Not forgetting French, German, Spanish and Italian. Most of the groups meet during the day on a monthly basis, with a full meeting available to all members on the first Thursday of the month.

Members come together and learn together, not for qualifications, but for its own reward — the sheer joy of discovery.

Members share their skills and life experiences: the learners teach, and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them. No qualifications are needed to join the U3A, retired or semi- retired, giving you the time to enjoy all the things the U3A has to offer. Neither is it expensive, with a very modest annual subscription, and some of the groups charge a small fee per meeting to cover expenses.

All the groups have been started and are run by members anxious to pursue their interests, but the emphasis is very much on co-operation, with all members being encouraged to share their knowledge and skills. You don’t have to be a member to start to sample the delights of the U3A interest groups.

Anyone can join one or two of the groups for a couple of sessions without obligation and can go to one of the monthly full meetings and see how it all operates.

Cheadle Hulme has its own U3A, and now boasts nearly 200 members, supporting nearly 30 interest groups, from Singing to Art Appreciation, from Technology for Everyone and Computers to

RAINBOW88 A letter from Linda, On the last Friday of March rainbow88 I had to close our restaurant due to the safety of our team and as not to pass on anything, we also decided to close for takeaways too even knowing we would have made good business.

I was rather down as we had to cancel 6 charity events and the first thing that came to my mind was how am I going to help the community with my doors closed?

Anyway, I slept on it and decided that rainbow88’s kitchen is closed but my small kitchen at home in Bramhall isn’t so decided to cook for the vulnerable, selfisolating, NHS staff and Key Workers, those suffering from mental illness or lost loved ones and literally anyone who has gone that extra mile for others!

I approached Lou Murphy from Helping Hands Bramhall and we got local businesses and residents involved to donate ingredients, bakers on board to bake treats to go out together with my meals and voluntary drivers to deliver! Beards Butchers, CO OP Bramhall, Go Local Hursthead, Go Local Orrishmere, Waterhouses, Hollingworth Design Ltd were some of the extremely kind and generous donators!

Facebook sites also played a big part in getting the donations in, thank you!

Members of the public were asked to nominate anyone they knew by private messaging me names, addresses and why and we made sure they received a treat! There have been tears, emotions and smiles from many who received our treats!

I did all preparation, cooking, cleaning on my own for 1800 meals until my daughter came

home after 8 weeks and she helped! We then re-opened for takeaways we still continued to treat the vulnerable till this day! I am in touch with most local churches!

There were many who had heard about my rice and wanted to buy so I dedicated Weds to cook Fancy Fried Rice and Salt n Pepper Chicken Balls for £5pp with treats from the bakers and all the money to St Ann’s Hospice and Chelwood Foodbank.

To date I’ve treated 2616 deserving people to Fancy Fried Rice (Spicy Chicken, Onion and Egg Fried Rice) and treats from our bakers including over 250 for the charities!

I am also on the board of the steering group for the new Christie Hospital in Macclesfield where I myself had chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer and have recently raised up to £3000 for them over my June birthday and will be asking for donations for rainbow88’s 21st anniversary in October!

They were daunted at the thought of finding builders and tradesmen. Measuring up and a chat about what they needed created ideas to merge these two rooms. Just knocking down the wall wouldn’t fix everything. Look at the space, make a list of what is necessary, think about how you would use the kitchen diner, where the light comes in, where will the radiators go, will you need new flooring, lighting, a new kitchen?

By using your budget wisely it can be done cost effectively. I’m bricking up a back door (less light but more useable), opening a wall (more light from a better direction), an extra wall in

the kitchen is available as the cafe style shelf table is redundant (more units and much needed worktop), only a few sq metres of wood flooring requires replacing, a new kitchen with a dishwasher (bonus) are costed but aren’t breaking the bank. By using few top cupboards with shelves for the rest breaks it up and helps keep it open whilst saving pounds.

We can reuse many appliances, choose plainer more modern cabinets and get cool handles off the internet.

Alcoves in the dining room will house cupboards to hide the day’s work, the ironing and it’s now an easy transition from the kitchen to set the table up for everyone to eat together.

Even the dog got a hideaway with a simple built in cupboard above his majesty’s bed.

Autumn Recipe T

AKURI (SORT OF)

his is based on a brunch I had at Dishoom which was delicious. It is very simple and quick to make.

We’ve been going on a lot of morning walks – since it all happened – so I tend to chop all the veg/herbs up before we go and then it’s just a simple thing to shove together for a fabulous brunch when we get back.

Serves 2 4 streaky bacon rashers (optional) Small knob of butter 3 spring onions sliced 1 small red (or green chilli) chopped Handful of coriander chopped Teaspoon of mild curry powder 4 eggs 2 slices of sourdough bread.

If you are having the bacon fry it until it’s really crispy and then put them on kitchen paper to crisp up further.

Toast the sourdough.

In a saucepan melt the butter over a medium heat then add the spring onions and chilli fry for a couple of minutes then add the coriander.

Break the eggs into the pan and stir to scramble them. Add the curry powder and keep stirring until the eggs are cooked to your liking. I like mine quite firm.

Split the eggs between the two slices of sourdough and top with the bacon.

Garnish with some coriander leaves and serve up.

Passion for fashion

hristmas will be upon us very soon and you’re probably thinking about buy a sewing machine. The lockdown has given people an opportunity to reignite their passion for fashion and sewing is back, and cool again. Sewing machines are available and all the manufacturers are bringing out their brightest and their best, but what do you need to look for when you go shopping for your new machine? Here are my tips on what to look for and my top 6 sewing machines 1 - Think about what you want to sew and how often you might sew. Are you planning to make curtains, or baby clothes? I am a dressmaker, but I also like to fill my house with homemades, curtains, cushions and do the odd repairs.

I need to be sure the machine I have can handle both heavy weight sewing all the way down to fine chiffon and silks, but making stretch t shirts for my boys means the machine needs to offer a stretch option too.

Take a selection of fabrics to the sewing machine shop and ask them to allow you to sew these fabrics. They should and quite often they will.

2 -Now I know what I want, I know how much to budget. Do I wait and save up for the one I really want to meet my needs, or do I go ahead and purchase one that will do the job? The problem with that is, you grow out of your sewing machine very quickly. I have a lot of sewers who have wished they were recommended the next size up.

This isn’t giving you permission to go crazy, you don’t want to be that person with all the gear but no idea.

3 - Do you need to move your machine around? If you have a dedicated workspace that’s great, but if your machine needs to be taken off the dining table nightly (although tea in front of the telly could be a fun treat!), then you need to consider the weight. Will you take yours to sewing classes?

4- After sales support - warranty and reputation.

I will recommend one over another only because I need to know the manufacturer will help me if I ask. I have had bad experiences with some and others can’t seem to do enough. Do your research and ask around.

My favourite £100 mark machines, are Brother LS14/17, Singer Serenade (Lidl) and the Necchi NM200 (Aldi).

These machine have proven to be a great budget machine that handles fabric extremely well, give you a good range of stitches and accessories. I have unboxed and demonstrated these machines in the latest you tube videos.

For, consider Brother F420, Necchi K102AD and Juki HZL H80 , these have a similar number of stitches and speed control, each coping well with fabric and a good overall result.

Attending regular online Pilates classes will give a structure to your day and something to look forward to.

Ideally I would prefer to be teaching my clients face to face again but I’m enjoying teaching online and through Zoom and I’ve been able to interact with clients surprisingly well. I also still get to socialise with people I’ve taught for months and even years. And, it’s lovely to see that clients can catch up with class-friends too.

Since March I’ve personally joined online Pilates Classes and workshops live from Dubai, New York, Arizona, London and Scotland; distance and travel time isn’t an issue with an online class!

his patient came into the practice for a free consultation with our smile advisor Jane. Through years of dental neglect, the teeth had crumbled and loosened. They were discoloured, chipped, decayed, positioned poorly and the patient was upset about the look of them when he smiled. Another big concern for him was the inability to chew and ultimately eat food without experiencing a lot of pain. His jaw was also overclosing because of a lack of teeth and as a result, his biting position had unfavourably changed over the years.

In a full comprehensive assessment with Dr Karim, a series of clinical photographs were taken. A CT scan was also taken using our cutting edge in house CT Scanner. It was decided that the few teeth that were remaining were too far gone to treat. A diagnosis of dental neglect and gum disease was made which ultimately led to the loss of other teeth too. The patient also admitted that his dental hygiene was not as diligent as it could have been and he was a heavy smoker previously.

The patient was confronted with 2 options to help him to achieve his dental goals. The first was the removal of all of his upper and lower remaining teeth, followed by the provision of a full coverage denture. This would allow him to improve his bite and the appearance of his teeth but the trade off was having something removable in his mouth, which could potentially move around and also alter his taste sensation.

The second option was dental implants and the provision of a fixed upper and lower bridge.

This treatment is as close as he would get to having his real teeth. He opted for the implant supported bridge.

The first phase lasted 3 months and comprised of the patient improving his dental hygiene and proving that he could look after his remaining teeth. Plaque scores were taken during his multiple visits with the hygienist and gum depth charts were recorded at each session. This helped us to confirm that the patient was willing to keep his part of the deal and gave us confidence that if we used dental implants; the patient had the knowledge and ability to look after them.

The second part of the treatment was the same day smile. After all the preparation had been completed between Dr Karim and the lab technician, the big day had finally arrived.

On this visit, the patient had all of his upper teeth removed. The implants were carefully placed and the lab technician and Dr Karim fitted an implant supported fixed bridge. Within a day, his smile had completely changed. After 6 months, a second bridge allowing us to make minor modifications replaced this initial temporary bridge.

The patient was over the moon at the result. He can now chew the food that he’s missed and can also smile again without having to cover his teeth. His treatment has had a huge emotional benefit for him and he feels and looks 20 years younger. He feels that he has had a new lease of life. The patient will be doing the same treatment on his lower teeth later this year.
