Welcome to the February / March issue of SK Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle. Thankfully 2020 is behind us and I for one am delighted to see the back of it. With a mass vaccination started I’m feeling very positive and looking forward to 2021; here’s hoping we all have a great year.

St Ann’s Hospice and Just Helping’s annual Christmas tree collection have been hit by the latest lockdown. If you did have a tree for collection turn to page 12 for the full rundown.

You will see again this month we have cut the events pages down to just the event name and phone number. As we are entering the new year, I’m hoping that our community events can start up again, but I’m guessing most of them won’t be up and running until Spring. But as usual if you do want any more information please give them a call and I’m sure they will be able to let you know what’s going on.

Oriental Chicken Tray Bake.

I

made this the other day and I can’t believe how easy it is and how absolutely delicious it is! It has loads of lovely oriental flavours and a mixture of textures from the squidginess of the sweet potatoes to the lovely crispy skin on the chicken thighs. Serve it with some stir fried greens such as broccoli or mange tout dressed with a little sesame oil.

Serves 4 8 Chicken Thighs (bone in skin on) 700g sweet potatoes scrubbed in and cut into wedges 2 tbsp white miso paste 1 1/2 tbsp runny honey 2 tbsp sake or dry sherry 1 tbsp soy sauce 2.5cm of fresh root ginger peeled and finely grated 3 garlic cloves finely grated 1 red chilli halved and finely chopped – leave the seeds in for extra heat 12 spring onions trimmed but left whole.

Final basting 1tbsp white miso 1 tbsp runny honey 1/2 tbsp soy sauce 1/2 tbsp sake or dry sherry Sesame seeds to serve Pre heat the over to 190C or Gas Mark 6.

Put the chicken thighs and sweet potato wedges into a roasting tin large enough to take them in a single layer but not too big - everything should be fairly snug. Mix the remaining ingredients (except the spring onions and the final basting ingredients) in a bowl and pour over the chicken and sweet potatoes. Mix everything up to give everything a good coating – make sure the chicken is skin side up before putting it into the oven.

Roast for 45 minutes basting with the pan juices every 15 minutes and turning the sweet potatoes over.

Meanwhile mix the final baste ingredients together. 15 minutes before the end of cooking time put the sping onions into the pan and baste everything with the final baste ingredients.

Return to the oven for the final 15 mins.

Transfer to a warmed serving dish to keep warm and put the pan onto the hob on a high heat to thicken up the juices. Pour this over the chicken and sweet potatoes and sprinkle with the sesame seeds. Serve immediately you won’t be sorry.

KEEP WARM & WELL THIS WINTER

I

t’s important to look after yourself in winter, especially during the pandemic, as cold temperatures can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of flu and other lung-related problems.

How can I keep my home warm?

How can I keep myself warm?

n Keep your bedroom window closed at night when the weather is cold. The coldest time of the day is just before dawn and breathing in cold air increases the risk of chest infections.

Even if it isn’t a severe winter, cold weather makes us more susceptible to certain illnesses.

Follow these tips to stay healthy and keep warm indoors and out. n Several thin layers of clothing will keep you warmer than one thick layer, as the layers trap warm air. Clothes made from wool or fleecy synthetic fibres such as polyester are a better choice than cotton. Start with thermal underwear, warm tights or socks. n Use a hot-water bottle, wheat bag or an electric blanket to warm the bed. n Check whether your electric blanket can be kept on all night. Some blankets should only be used to warm the bed before you get in.

If you have continence difficulties, talk to your doctor before using one.

n Close the curtains in the evenings and fit thermal linings if you can. This will keep the heat in.

n Draught- proof doors and windows, insulate the loft, lag the hot-water tank and pipes, and consider getting cavity-wall insulation.

These measures will help to keep your home warm and your energy bills down – and you may be able to get financial help to set these up. n Keep your main living room heated to 21°C (70°F). n Heat your bedroom to 18°C (64°F).

ZAP Vehicle Charging launches into the electric vehicle charge point market, giving the customer and the installer a full range of feature-packed competitively priced products, from 7kw domestic AC to 150kw commercial DC charge stations. All our chargers are OCPP 1.6 meeting current and new UK and European regulations and requirements.

WCS is a voucher-based scheme designed to provide eligible applicants with support towards the upfront costs of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints. The contribution is limited to the 75% of purchase and installation costs, up to a maximum of £350 for each socket, up to a maximum of 40 across all sites for each applicant.

You can now provide any electronic or paper form of signature for both yourselves and your customers.

You will only need to supply the cost for the installation once, with a breakdown for the associated costs for the charge point; any additional equipment; and labour.

St Ann’s Christmas Tree Collection

t is with deep regret that we have made the difficult decision to postpone the charity Christmas tree recycling in your area this year.

Across the country there has been a continued significant rise in Covid cases and record numbers of hospitalisations and deaths. Hospitals are at a crisis point never seen before, and the government is making even stronger pleas for us to “stay at home”, “act as if you have the virus” and people are being asked to only leave their homes where it is absolutely essential.

St Ann’s Hospice has continued to provide care to people with life-limiting illnesses throughout the pandemic in spite of the restrictions on fundraising.

We are truly sorry that we have had to make this decision, but safety must come first. Despite extensive efforts made by our teams to ensure that all risk assessments have been updated where possible, the overall risk to the health of volunteers and the local community is too great.

The collection must therefore be postponed until it can be run safely within government guidelines.

Donations from this collection are an even more important source of income for St Ann’s at this time and we very much appreciate your contribution. However, if you feel that you would like your donation refunded please email refunds@just-helping.org.uk by the end of January with your name, address, registration transaction ID and contact details.

What sleepy auction treasures do you have at home to delight us in 2021?

As a new year gets under way, we’re all hoping for a better and brighter 2021 – packed with fascinating discoveries.

The extraordinary events of 2020 turned everyone’s lives upside down but some things remained the same, and that included auction success.

And, despite it all - in fact because of it all - the finds kept coming. Lockdown gave people time to clear out unwanted items like never before. Rooms, attics and garages that hadn’t been touched for years were tackled – and gems Chinese vase emerged.

Hansons’ star discovery of 2020 was a rare Beijingenamelled Chinese wine ewer dating back to the Qianlong period (1735-99).

It was found in a garage Chinese wine ewer found in garage where it had languished in a box for years. It sold for £390,000. Finds like this can be life-changing.

On a similar theme, a badly cracked and repaired Qianlong period Chinese lantern vase, found under a table, made £200,000 from an estimate of £15,000-£25,000. It sparked 11 phone bidders and an intense battle to repatriate it back to China.

sourcing Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone hardback first editions from 1997. Only 500 books were published. Of those, 300 went to libraries and schools and 200 went to book shops. So far, our books expert Jim Spencer has uncovered six copies and one sold for a hammer price of £60,000 in October.

But it’s not just about the big-price lots.

Our general sales and specialist auctions Harry Potter first edition have all done well and produced many happy sellers – and new buying trends have emerged.

For example, our Toy Department has seen a surge in demand for gaming-related items such as vintage consoles and video games.

Another theme of 2020 set to continue is strong gold prices. In unstable economic times investors prefer tangible assets. That has impacted on both our coins and jewellery sales with top prices gained for gold. Even broken jewellery excels.

Oriental Chicken Tray Bake.

I

made this the other day and I can’t believe how easy it is and how absolutely delicious it is! It has loads of lovely oriental flavours and a mixture of textures from the squidginess of the sweet potatoes to the lovely crispy skin on the chicken thighs. Serve it with some stir fried greens such as broccoli or mange tout dressed with a little sesame oil.

Serves 4 8 Chicken Thighs (bone in skin on) 700g sweet potatoes scrubbed in and cut into wedges 2 tbsp white miso paste 1 1/2 tbsp runny honey 2 tbsp sake or dry sherry 1 tbsp soy sauce 2.5cm of fresh root ginger peeled and finely grated 3 garlic cloves finely grated 1 red chilli halved and finely chopped – leave the seeds in for extra heat 12 spring onions trimmed but left whole.

Final basting 1tbsp white miso 1 tbsp runny honey 1/2 tbsp soy sauce 1/2 tbsp sake or dry sherry Sesame seeds to serve Pre heat the over to 190C or Gas Mark 6.

Put the chicken thighs and sweet potato wedges into a roasting tin large enough to take them in a single layer but not too big - everything should be fairly snug. Mix the remaining ingredients (except the spring onions and the final basting ingredients) in a bowl and pour over the chicken and sweet potatoes. Mix everything up to give everything a good coating – make sure the chicken is skin side up before putting it into the oven.

Roast for 45 minutes basting with the pan juices every 15 minutes and turning the sweet potatoes over.

Meanwhile mix the final baste ingredients together. 15 minutes before the end of cooking time put the sping onions into the pan and baste everything with the final baste ingredients.

Return to the oven for the final 15 mins.

Transfer to a warmed serving dish to keep warm and put the pan onto the hob on a high heat to thicken up the juices. Pour this over the chicken and sweet potatoes and sprinkle with the sesame seeds. Serve immediately you won’t be sorry.

Find Peace Within in 2021

ecently, one of my young clients, who I was working with for a substance addiction, said something absolutely brilliant that really stuck with me.

We were digging into why they felt they had persisted with the addiction for so many years and they said, after a period of deep thought “I know it’s pointless, I don’t even enjoy it really... it just turns ‘doing nothing’ into ‘doing something’”.

It hit me like a tonne of bricks. This simple statement and how it was delivered was really quite powerful.

People in general these days, and especially young people, just can’t ‘do nothing’...they can’t be at peace with themselves, they can’t just sit with their own thoughts and feelings and be content. They HAVE to be doing something.

Whether it is scrolling on a phone, lighting a cigarette, calling someone or chewing gum, people just aren’t comfortable doing nothing anymore in this modern world so rich with sensory stimulation from every angle, and this absolutely makes us more susceptible to addictive behaviour.

Silence is golden There was a study I came across many years ago on mice and their receptiveness to various sounds. They played various noises to the mice to monitor their brain responses; baby mice squeaking, predator noises, adult mouse squeaks of both sexes etc.

When analysing the results, they became focused on a very active and recurring brain response, far more active than at other times. They thought that whatever this sound was, must be hugely significant... but when they cross referenced it back to the inputs they found that these periods of high brain activity were in between the sounds, they were when the mice were faced with nothing but silence.

This encouraged scientists to increase the study of meditation and mindfulness practices. More and more research over the years (into humans now) has shown that mindfulness, meditation and other practices that quieten the mind such as yoga or Tai Chi have a host of mental (and physical) health benefits.

Regular meditators are more creative, calmer, more active physically, more motivated, happier,

more focused and more likely to sleep well.

Meditation also improves blood pressure, reduces blood cortisol levels, reduces symptoms of anxiety such as panic attacks and reduces heart disease risk. There are many other benefits we don’t have time to go into right now, but surely these alone are enough.

It is okay to do nothing The key message to take from this, is that in the melee of our regular, busy lives, we have forgotten that it is okay to do nothing. One of the reasons the Coronavirus lockdowns this year have been so hard for so many people, is because they have forced us to do less, and that, ironically has been stressful.

Teaching our children to sit and think about their homework, or anything they want to do such as a craft project, rather than just telling them what to do, will boost their creativity and confidence and show them that they have more capability than they thought.

Encouraging young people to put their devices away for a couple of hours each night and just talk more will help them to connect with themselves, and their families and get comfortable not being constantly stimulated.

Anyone I work with for addiction or trauma, or anything really, is encouraged to meditate and practice mindfulness as it helps them to build agency over their actions and master their impulses.

All adults too need to get comfortable with not being ‘busy’ all the time. Taking time out of each day to just sit and think, reflect, be grateful, meditate or truly connect with someone by talking presently to them, will have untold benefits in the long term.

Remember, we do not always need to turn nothing into something.

Make it a goal to find the peace within yourself in 2021 and that alone will make it an amazing year for personal growth.

2021’s brown envelope on your doormat

am writing this in early December and the first very lucky people have just received their Covid-19 vaccinations. I do hope that Christmas was able to bring some good cheer for all of us because we all really needed it.

But 2021 may bring a financial New Year’s hangover the like of which we have never had before.

The government, businesses and individuals may be facing the largest debt pile they have ever had; and as I write this there are still opportunities to borrow.

Businesses continue to be able to apply through their banks for either a Bounce Back Loan (BBL), limited to a maximum of £50,000 or 25% of turnover whichever is the higher. Those businesses who in 2020 may have cautiously borrowed less than they could have done, may find that their bank now offers a ‘Top Up’ to take them to the maximum available. The Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) offers even higher lending but may need a little more time to arrange. The availability of both lending schemes has been extended to 31 January 2021.

Early 2021 should see the roll out of the ‘opt in’ scheme where businesses that deferred VAT liabilities that arose between 20 March and 30 June 2020, now have an opportunity to apply for a further extension. This option, that must be applied for, allows the deferred VAT to be repaid over 11 months rather than by 31 March 2021. I think this soft-landing option was always going to be on the cards otherwise bruised businesses were going to face a cash flow squeezing double whammy of VAT payments at the end of the March 2021.

The Job Retention Scheme is set to continue until 31 March 2021, but we must all remember that like the Self-Employed Income Support Grant and

the Rates support grants, all of these are taxable.

In terms of personal taxes, we were allowed to postpone our 31 July 2020 Payments on Account.

There is no news so far with any assistance to extend this further and this will be due for payment along with any final balance that may be owed for the tax year 2019/2020; as well as the first payment on account for 2020/2021. So the 31 January 2021 payment deadline could feel like a triple whammy for some and be causing some sleepless nights.

With any taxes, our advice has always been to file documents, submit personal tax returns; accounts and corporation tax returns, as soon as possible. Then you know what the liability is, and hopefully it is months away allowing you to budget for it. Added to that, HMRC have always been willing to talk to people who may have to request an extended time frame over which to pay their tax. This is called a Time To Pay arrangement and is even more likely to be granted if sought in 2021.

So open that brown envelope. Speak to your accountant and have them assist with a breakdown of all your liabilities and then make the call to HMRC if you need to. More than any other year, in 2021 you do need to know what is going on with your taxes and liabilities so that you can make arrangements allowing you to focus on other important matters.

ongratulations to all of you who were gifted a new sewing machine over the holidays.

Many of you may be new to sewing, so it’s time for another great sewing project for you.

An envelope cushion is a lovely and easy project to get started with and something you can proudly display for all to admire. Use a plain fabric or one with an all over design so you don’t have to worry about which way is up.

What you’ll need: 1 x 15” square of fabric (A) 2 x 15” by 20” fabric (B) Fold the one shorter edge of the two longer pieces (B) over by 1/2” and sew down along the edge of the fold. This fold is your hem.

Place piece (A) good side face up on a table and lay one piece (B), good side face down on top of (A) with the hemmed edge in the middle. Lay the second piece (B) with its hemmed edge in the middle, face down on piece (A).

Pin the pieces together and sew along all four edges of the pieces. Lock those stitches using your reverse lever!

Clip the corners and turn the cushion cover through. Hey presto! Easy project!

My top tips for a great result.

Use cotton fabric,it’s much easier to handle; it’s stable and glides through the sewing machine easily. It’s also an easy to wash fabric.

I would suggest a size 80, universal sewing machine needle, size 80 is good for this project.

The bigger the number,the thicker the needle.

I prefer a good brand needle. Schmetz is my preferred brand but I know many people like Organ needles.

Good thread is vital for sewing. My favourite brands are Mettler, Gütermann and Coats. Using an inferior brand tends to cause problems for your machine. The fibres are shorter and not twisted well to form the thread and the cheaper cottons are made in dry conditions, so the fibres are brittle. This leaves shreds in your sewing machine, and a build up causes no end of

tension problems (for you and your machine).

A good pair of tailoring shears that are angled to sit on the table help you to cut fabric easily. The wrong scissors mean you have to lift the fabric higher off the table to cut, leaving you with a jagged edge. This causes people to worry that they’re ‘bad at cutting’. Using the right tools makes a huge difference.

If you buy extra bobbins for your new sewing machine, check they’re the official ones, the right size for your machine, make and model.

Brother, for example,have two different sizes for their machine whereas Janome uses the same size across all their modern machines. Metal bobbins aren’t used much nowadays, mainly in front loaders so avoid those. It’s tempting to buy generic bobbins that are cheaper and seem more economical. Especially prewound bobbins.

The problem with these are they might not fit your sewing machine. This causes problems with loopy stitching and tangles on the under side of your fabric. I always advise filling your own bobbins.

Clean your machine, regularly... Avoiding these issues from the start will help you have a long lasting, enjoyable relationship with your sewing machine.

eutral décor, whilst safe and calming believe it or not you’ve got to do a pretty good job to prevent it from looking bland. You need light and shade, layers, texture and lighting. A great idea is to add colour, even a little will help lift it and allow interest and balance.

Look at Christmas when we like to invite our friends and family to join us in our warm, cosy homes (Covid rules allowing), we add our Christmas tree, a beautiful emerald green. OK the decorating of said tree can be toe-curlingly tacky, particularly if we let the kids have their way but back to the gorgeous deep green of the tree, it’s warm, inviting, natural.

This issue I’ll show you that there’s no need to paint everything in sight rendering it as dark as the inside of a Sherman tank, but you can be subtle or daring. Done well it can lift a room from unremarkable to boutique hotel chic.

If you have a piece of furniture you can practice on paint that. It’s a pop of colour and with emerald green it will go with either lighter backgrounds or darker. Make sure you prepare your furniture first and use the correct paint, there is plenty of good furniture paint on the market, maybe that’s a topic for another issue.

It looks much better if you don’t paint the hinges and any metal handles, take it apart if you can or cover with masking tape. No need to know how to distress it or add gold foil until you’re well practised, it will transform the piece and add to your room. Throw in cushions, a vase and plants and you have your scheme in it’s minimal form.

See the pictures here of a hallway and a bedroom. Imagine these didn’t have the velvety green to sink your eyes into, they’d be quite flat and would need other things to avoid bland abyss.

Want more? Take a look at the lounge picture. The walls are decorated and painted in the same shade of jewel green, the table is dark to reflect this, but then accents of gold make it look like a beautiful piece of jewellery, pop of white for contrast and wooden floor to warm and soften the area.
