MID CENTURY DESIGN FOR THE RETRO VIBES

M

y love for colour, pattern and strong design can be used in many styles, but the Mid Century furniture and design is, perhaps, my favourite. When I had my furniture and interiors store in Belfast, I always had plenty of furniture and accessories showcasing how these beautiful designer shapes worked in a home.

The big glass ball light you see over the dining table here is a classic Verner Panton light, not cheap, but wow what a statement. This was a light I stocked in my store, pleasing Northern Ireland’s interior lovers who could see it in real life, not just on the internet. Not everything needs to be Mid Century in style when putting a room together to achieve the look. It blends well with more modern furniture, giving a nod to the retro style. The child’s bedroom pictured here has been carefully put together with the beautiful drawer unit being the only Mid Century piece. The bed would work well in this style also, a wooden headboard in the same wood finish and these aren’t difficult to find, places like Habitat offer lots in this style.

I love the master bedroom here with all the vibrant colours and the shaped headboard, which wouldn’t look out of place in a completely differently designed room. If the colours are too bold for your taste it would work just as well with the tones muted down, plainer bedside tables, still unmatched, and a lighter wall to the right. The carefully sourced art is perfectly scaled and matches the fun vibe of the room. The rug is fantastic with colour tying in – imagine a neutral or cream rug here, it would clash and look completely out of place. This room looks like a happy place. For tips and tricks, follow me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch. Sharon.

Garden Talk

SPRING FLOWERING SNOWDROPS Snowdrops, Galanthus, are among the most beautiful sights of the gardening year, their nodding white heads appearing just as winter begins to loosen its grip. These delicate flowers, with their pure white petals and gentle, graceful form, bring a quiet elegance to any garden. They are not simply a sign that spring is on its way, they are a stunning feature in their own right, capable of transforming even the simplest space into something special. One of the greatest joys of snowdrops is how easy they are to grow. Once planted, they ask for very little in return. In fact, the secret to success with snowdrops is remarkably simple: plant them, then leave them alone. Snowdrops thrive when they are left undisturbed, gradually spreading and multiplying year after year. Given the right conditions, they will naturalise beautifully, forming drifts of white that return reliably each season. The common snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, is particularly accommodating. It will grow in almost any soil, making it suitable for a wide range of gardens. Snowdrops look especially effective planted beneath deciduous trees, shrubs, or along borders where they can receive light in winter and early spring before the canopy above fills out. Tucked into these natural settings, they create a woodland feel, as if they have always been there. From over 40 years of gardening experience, one of the most important lessons learned with snowdrops is how and when to buy them. The best way to establish snowdrops successfully is to purchase them “in the green” that is, while they are actively growing, usually bought in late winter or early spring. Whether bought in pots or in larger quantities from specialist nurseries, these growing plants establish far more readily. They will often flower in their first

12 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2026

season and bulk up quickly, rewarding you almost immediately.By contrast, snowdrops bought as dry bulbs in the autumn can be much more challenging. These bulbs are prone to drying out, and even when planted carefully, they can be slow to establish. In some cases, they may take a year or more before flowering, and losses are not uncommon. For reliable success, buying in the green is well worth the investment. For some gardeners, snowdrops become a passion. Enthusiasts known as galanthrophiles collect different varieties, and there are now hundreds, possibly approaching a two and a half thousand varieties to choose from. While many beautiful forms exist, the native Galanthus nivalis remains one of the most charming and dependable choices for most gardens. Prices for snowdrops can vary widely. A simple clump of common snowdrops can cost less than £5, making them an affordable addition to any garden. However, rare varieties can command astonishing prices. In fact, a single snowdrop bulb once sold for a record-breaking £1,850. While fascinating, such extremes are entirely unnecessary for most gardeners. Snowdrops prove that beauty does not need to be complicated or expensive. With minimal effort, they will establish, multiply, and return year after year, a timeless reminder that even the smallest flowers can bring the greatest joy. Happy Gardening! G

GROWING OLDER WITHOUT LOSING YOURSELF

rowing older is something we all do, yet it’s often spoken about in hushed tones or framed as something to be feared. As a care professional, and as someone who has the privilege of walking alongside people in later life every day, I see something very different. I see strength, character, humour, and a deep sense of self that doesn’t disappear with age — it simply evolves. Let’s celebrate growing older. Not despite the changes it brings, but because of them. To grow older is to carry a lifetime of experiences. Every joy, challenge, success, and lesson becomes part of who you are. Age is not something that replaces your identity — it adds depth to it. You are not defined by a number, a diagnosis, or a change in mobility. You are defined by your values, your memories, your relationships, and the things that still make you feel like you. This season of life often brings a slower pace, and that isn’t a failure — it’s an invitation. An invitation to savour moments, to listen more closely, to enjoy the things that once rushed past. Slowing down doesn’t mean stopping. It means choosing how you spend your time more intentionally. Staying active might look different now, but it is no less meaningful. A walk instead of a run. A coffee with a friend instead of a packed diary. Activity is about engagement, not exhaustion. Doing things that make you happy becomes even more important as we age. Happiness

14 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2026

doesn’t have to be loud or dramatic. It might be gardening, reading, cooking, listening to music, or sharing stories. These moments matter. They nourish the soul and remind us that pleasure and purpose don’t have an expiry date. Of course, things change — bodies, routines, roles. Learning how to adapt to those changes is one of the quiet strengths of growing older. Adaptation isn’t giving in; it’s growing wiser. It’s finding new ways to do what you love, asking for support when needed, and recognising that independence and connection can exist side by side. Growing older is not about losing yourself. It’s about becoming more fully who you are. This chapter of life deserves respect, celebration, and kindness — especially from ourselves. Because ageing isn’t the end of the story. It’s simply a new season, with its own rhythm, beauty, and meaning.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL FOR INCOME TAX IS ALMOST UPON US!!

T

he UK government’s drive to modernize the tax system continues with Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax. After launching MTD for VAT, the next huge step is MTD for Income Tax. Starting 6 April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with income over £50,000 will be required to comply. If you fall into this category, you should receive a letter from HMRC, but even if you haven’t, it’s still your responsibility to sign up. MTD for Income Tax replaces the traditional self-assessment system with digital quarterly updates. Instead of submitting a tax return once a year, individuals will report income and expenses every three months using compatible software. At the end of the tax year, a fifth and final return to confirm and finalize your figures must also be submitted by 31 January following the tax year. This move aims to simplify the tax process, reduce errors, and provide a clearer view of year-round finances. From 6 April 2026, those earning over £50,000 from self-employment or rental income must report quarterly. This represents a shift from the annual system and will affect sole traders and landlords. A year later the threshold for signing up falls to £30,000 and £20,000 the year after, so this mechanism will soon impact many of the self-employed and many landlords. The most significant change is the shift from annual tax returns to quarterly reporting. You will need to submit summaries of income and expenses every three months in addition to a final year-end return due by 31 January, ensuring HMRC has a more accurate picture of your finances. To comply, you must use software that connects directly to HMRC. Many available tools automate record-keeping and reporting, eliminating the need for manual data entry and making it easier to stay on top of finances. HMRC suggests that we will feel the improvement of quarterly updates which will make the process less stressful than dealing with annual returns.

20 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2026

Automated tools may reduce the risk of errors, ensuring more precise submissions and regular updates ought to provide a clearer picture of your finances, helping you plan effectively. Hopefully the end of ‘end-of-year surprises’: with consistent reporting, you’ll know what you owe throughout the year, avoiding last-minute tax time stress. For some, adjusting to quarterly reporting may be challenging, especially if you’re not tech-savvy. Additionally, there may be costs for subscribing to MTD-compliant software. Tracking income and expenses more regularly may require changes to your current processes. However, HMRC will provide support, and available tools will make the transition easier. If you earn over £50,000, start preparing for the April 2026 deadline by researching MTDcompatible software and ensuring your records are up to date. Even if you haven’t received a letter from HMRC, you are still required to comply. It’s essential to understand the new requirements and begin preparing for them as soon as possible. MTD for Income Tax may make the process of filing taxes more efficient, accurate, and manageable. By adopting digital tools and keeping up with quarterly reporting, you’ll be well-positioned to navigate this change with confidence. With April 2026 just around the corner, now is the time to ask your accountant how you should start preparing for the new era of digital tax reporting.

Mindset Advice

THINK BEFORE YOU JAB Weight loss injections are everywhere. Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro. You can’t scroll through social media without seeing them mentioned alongside positive case studies. For certain people - those with type 2 diabetes, or who have genuinely struggled with obesity for years - these medications can be life saving, and I’m not here to criticise their use. But I do want to make a point that perhaps isn’t being made loudly enough. These drugs are medical interventions. They therefore fit in “medical situations”, however, they can “medicalise” non medical situations unnecessarily. Why is this a potential problem? Every medical intervention carries side effects, and generally their use case balances these side effects (or risks) against the benefits of use. If the benefits outweigh the risks then their use is rational. Side effects such as nausea, fatigue, muscle loss, mental disturbances and digestive problems are commonly reported, but many of the long-term effects of the jabs are not yet known. Therefore, if your health is not at critical levels of risk due to obesity, diabetes or heart disease, then before reaching for the prescription (and your wallet!), I think it’s essential to exhaust every other avenue first. Spring is as good time a time as any to make a few changes, and these five suggestions are a great start. Get moving in the morning. Just ten minutes. A walk, some yoga or bodyweight exercises. It kick starts your body and your mindset for the day. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Try a morning meditation. Five to ten minutes of mindfulness or a short, relaxing hypnotic

practice reduces cortisol levels, which directly affects weight gain and food cravings. Over time, the cumulative effect is significant. Look at what you’re actually eating. Make a handful of positive tweaks. More protein, more vegetables, less processed food, slower eating. Small, sustainable, consistent changes that accumulate over time. Review your alcohol intake. Alcohol disrupts sleep, damages the brain, spikes insulin, weakens decision-making around food, and adds empty calories. Cutting back, even a little, has a positive ripple effect across almost everything. Sort out your sleep. Poor sleep raises hunger hormones and makes every other healthy behaviour harder. Consistent bedtime, cool dark room, daily exercise, no screens in the hour before bed, reduce caffeine. These are simple but effective sleep boosting tips. They may be obvious, but most people have never tried all of these things together. If you find it overwhelming or impossible to think about behavioural and lifestyle change, then perhaps you should seek support with that before googling weight loss jabs. And if you do want support, I’ll have a think about whether I know any top rated behavioural change experts who could help… Robert Brennan (Top rated behavioural change expert)

Community news

Stockport Pain Café runs on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month at the MickerBrook pub in Cheadle (SK8 5NU) from 10.30am-12md. This peer support group is led by volunteers with chronic pain and/or fibromyalgia. It allows for people to connect, socialise and share experiences with others who are living with chronic pain or fibromyalgia. This month we celebrated our 1-year anniversary and are pleased to see attendance numbers continuing to rise as more people find out about us. We run two WhatsApp groups; one quiet (broadcast only) where we share updates and information about any upcoming guest speakers we may have invited. The second WhatsApp group is interactive, more social and chattier with conversation most days and extra meet ups organised here. People can choose to belong to one, none or both groups as suits them. (I have included a QR code above which people can scan to see our poster and join the two WhatsApp groups) This week we had a visit from Specialist Pain Nurse Esther Sieff from Stockport Pain Service at Stepping Hill. She delivered a fantastic talk about sleep issues and how to try and ease them. (Photos attached). We try to get interesting, relevant speakers most months and in the last 6 months have had visits from Dr Paul Hood, Clinical Psychologist, Adam Finlay a specialist Physiotherapist, Chris Lynas, a Social Prescriber, the Work Well team from Stockport Council and other local voluntary and charitable services. 32 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2026

We would encourage anyone who is experiencing chronic pain or fibromyalgia to pop down and give us a try. We are a friendly bunch, but we understand it can feel daunting the first time, we’ve all been there. Don’t take our word for it, listen to what our attendees have said about us. “I love chatting to everyone and listening to others’ problems, I forget my own”, “I have to pretend to be ok too often. I don’t have to pretend at the sessions. We can laugh, cry, support each other without judgement.” “Peer support is fantastic mental health therapy.” “I felt alone with pain and health issues for a long time. This really helps me mentally.” 100% of attendees felt that the café helped them feel more connected, supported and informed as well as helping them to cope with their symptoms.” 86% felt that the café was good for their wellbeing, made them feel more motivated and in control 79% felt that the café helped them to be more accepting of their pain 71% felt that the café gave them hope.

34 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2026

Sharon.

Lazy Brunch BRUNCH BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING Since it’s coming up to Easter I thought I’d do something with eggs for this edition. Then I thought people may be having guests over to stay or just entertaining. I like a brunch that seeps into lunch which is then followed by a nap and this recipe fits the bill as long as you get the timings right. If you aim for an 11.30 start you can justify a bellini or a bloody Mary at 12.

Grease a baking dish (approx. 20 x 30cm) with the butter. Tear up the baguette into bitesize chunks and put into the dish. Tear up the ham and put this along with most of the grated cheese into the gaps. Mix together the eggs, milk and cream until well combined. Then pour over the bread/ham/ cheese mix. Cover and chill an leave overnight ready for cooking at 11.00 ish the next morning.

Butter (for greasing the dish – do this well or you’ll regret it)

When you are ready to cook – pre heat the oven to 180 c. Sprinkle over the remaining cheese and bake in the oven for about 45 mins. Keep an eye on it towards the end of cooking time and if it looks to brown too early put some foil on it until the end. It should be slightly wobbly and lovely and crisp on top.

1 baguette

Enjoy! Then enjoy your nap you deserve it!

Serves 4.

Pack of good thick slice ham about 100g 150g Gruyere cheese grated – plus another 10 or so grams for the top 5 eggs 500ml milk 284ml single cream]1 tbsp Dijon mustard

The New Era of Plant-Based Travel: Why the “Plate of Chips” is History

F

or those embracing a vegan lifestyle, travel used to feel like a series of compromises. We’ve all been there: scanning a menu only to settle for a side of chips and a lonely salad while the rest of the table enjoys local specialties. For too long, the “vegan option” was an afterthought—a box to be ticked rather than a culinary experience to be enjoyed. But as we move through 2026, the travel industry is continuing to undergo a profound shift. The “plate of chips” era is officially over. Opting for a plant-based lifestyle is a powerful way to reduce our environmental footprint. These proteins produce significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions and use far less land and water than traditional meat production. It is a choice that benefits our health, protects animals, and preserves the planet for the very adventures we love to go on. Whether you are celebrating Veganuary or simply looking for a fresher, more conscious way to see the world, here are four short-haul destinations leading the way in world-class vegan hospitality: 1. Nirvana Cosmopolitan, Turkey Turkey’s culinary heritage is famously aromatic, but the Nirvana Cosmopolitan in Antalya is elevating the experience for plant-based guests. Their Ch’i For Life restaurant is a revelation, offering nutrientpacked smoothies, vibrant whole-food bowls, and organic wines. They’ve even mastered vegan ice cream and sugar-free desserts. It is the ultimate retreat for those seeking a holiday focused on “wellness from the inside out.” 2. Apollonia Beach Resort & Spa, Greece Crete’s rugged beauty is now matched by its evolving food scene. Apollonia Beach is home to Avocado, the island’s first exclusively vegan restaurant. By drawing inspiration from the traditional Cretan

42 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2026

diet—which has always leaned on incredible olive oils, wild greens, and pulses—they have reinvented iconic Grecian flavours without animal products. It proves you can immerse yourself in authentic Mediterranean culture while staying true to your values. 3. MYND Adeje, Tenerife Tenerife is a year-round favourite, but MYND Adeje is a standout for its creative LAMESA eatery. This isn’t just “health food”; it’s fun food. From customizable poke bowls to a show-stopping vegan cheesecake that rivals any traditional version, their menu is proof that plant-based dining can be both varied and genuinely indulgent. 4. St Raphael Resort, Cyprus In Limassol, this resort has embraced the movement wholeheartedly, dedicating 30% of its entire menu to vegan dishes. Their Seashells Healthy Living restaurant is located right on the beach, allowing you to enjoy sensational Mediterranean flavours with the sand between your toes. It’s an ideal escape where conscious living meets total seaside relaxation. Travel should be about exploration, not restriction. As global hospitality evolves, the world is becoming a much more inclusive—and delicious—place for the conscious traveller. We no longer have to choose between our ethics and our wanderlust.

HealtH & Wellbeing

YOU ARE HOW YOU EAT Dietary Wisdom from Chinese Medicine “He that takes medicine and neglects diet wastes the skills of the physician.”

D

Chinese Proverb

iet is central to the Chinese principle of ‘Yangsheng’ - the art of nourishing life by cultivating a healthy lifestyle. Whilst the food that we choose to eat is important, how we eat is considered to be even more important than what we eat. How often have you eaten a perfectly nutritious sandwich while working in front of a screen, watching the telly or whilst driving to an appointment? You may know that you’ve eaten it, as you’re no longer hungry and the empty sandwich packaging is there as evidence. However, you haven’t really taken any satisfaction from it and it’s lying quite heavy on your stomach. Before long, you’re hankering after something else because it didn’t really hit the spot. You might be surprised to hear that joy is the most important aspect of eating in Chinese Medicine. If we enjoy food and have a positive attitude to it, we actually digest it better. Food has to taste good and appeal to you and if it does, it will nourish not only your body, but also your mind and spirit. We should all ‘breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper’ when we can. Food is digested most effectively in the morning when it also serves as fuel for the day. In the evening we should eat less and ideally have finished eating by 7pm when the acupuncture channels involved in digestion are at a low ebb. And your body loves a routine, so if possible, eat at the same times every day.

44 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2026

It is important to eat slowly, chew your food, don’t overwhelm your stomach by eating too much at any time and stop eating before you’re full. As an average, we should aim for enough food to fit 2 cupped hands. Relax when eating, avoid distractions, eat sitting down and make each meal a little ceremony. It’s important to drink plenty of water – about 8 glasses a day on average – as every system in your body needs water. Many of us are chronically dehydrated and this can lead to all kinds of problems. However, you should avoid drinking much with a meal as this dilutes stomach enzymes and overwhelms the stomach. Chinese dietary therapy is most of all about being sensible and balanced. Eat widely and well, incorporate different flavours, avoid faddy diets and – you will love this - remember that a little of what you fancy does indeed do you good. If you’d like to know more, please get in touch.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PILATES?

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that combines deep breathing with gentle stretching to boost strength, balance, and mobility. Workouts target your “powerhouse” your abs, lower back, pelvic floor, hips, and glutes. In Pilates the quality of movement is more important than the quantity of repetitions. Correct breathing is essential, and helps you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency, learning to breathe properly can reduce stress. Pilates exercises will help you develop a strong “core,” or center of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Pilates improves flexibility and increases muscle strength and tone, it also improves concentration, body awareness and stress management. Arguably the most important health benefit received from Pilates is all about good posture and the calming self-confidence boost that comes with it. What Pilates classes are there? Pilates Matwork Classes The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles. High Intensity Power Pilates HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a

high intensity workout. Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout. The class is fast paced, but importantly LOW impact. Therefore, you will increase your heart rate safely whilst burning fat and building lean muscle mass. The class also uses light hand weights, which improve bone health. Attending regular Pilates classes can help you develop good postural habits and a strong core. Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured. Flexibility can be achieved only when all muscles are uniformly developed. Pilates helps to make your movements more efficient and body awareness will help to ensure you do not push your body beyond its endurance. Pilates is for life and can be life changing, so join a Pilates class now!
