ell what a Summer! We had some gorgeous weather, warm days and sometimes warmer nights where we all wished houses were built with air con here. Alas, those cooler days arrived sooner than we expected and it’s time to reset ourselves and our homes for the upcoming seasons. Clear away those summer flipflops, beach games and even the BBQ! OK, some people do love to BBQ throughout the year, but if that’s you I’m hoping for you that you have flooring to cope with the muddy ins and outs.

I like to add textiles to layer fabrics and make it all a bit cosier. Extra cushions with softer fabrics such as boucle, wool and faux fur, along with throws around the home give this feel. Think tassels, tones of a colour scheme and warm seat pads on your chairs and benches.

Every few groups we invite a guest speaker in and so far we have had talks from a Social Prescriber, a Clinical Psychologist, the Work Well team at Stockport Council and a Physiotherapist. In 2026 we have a Specialist Nurse coming from Stockport Pain service to talk about sleep and mindfulness sessions scheduled in. We are entirely volunteer led by people with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Pain themselves. You do not need a specific diagnosis, you do not need to be referred. AN ANNUAL JOY!

There is a unique magic in a packet of seeds. Every spring, I scatter a blend of hardy annual seeds directly into the soil. My favourite six annuals are Phacelia, Calendula, Corn Cockle, Rhodanthe, Cornflower and poppies all transform the garden into a vibrant, buzzing haven with minimal effort. If you are looking for maximum reward for minimum effort, this is the ultimate low-maintenance recipe for a stunning summer display each of these six annuals bring its own personality, colour, and texture to the garden. Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia): Also known as purple tansy, this plant features fern-like foliage and unusual, curling lavenderblue flowers. It is an absolute magnet for bees and hoverflies all summer. Calendula (Calendula officinalis): The classic pot marigold offers cheerful, sunny bursts of bright orange, cream and yellow. Corn cockle (Agrostemma githago): A nostalgic cottage garden favourite, it boasts tall, slender stems topped with elegant, five-petaled magenta or soft pink blossoms. Paper daisy (Rhodanthe chlorocephala): Often called the sunray daisy, these charming black and white flowers have a paper-like texture. They dry beautifully, allowing you to keep a piece of summer indoors all winter. Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus): With its intense, unmatched sky-blue hue, the cornflower adds striking depth and a classic wildflower aesthetic to the mix. Annual poppies (Papaver somnifera): sown in winter they burst into flower from June to August with flowers in an array of different colours. The beauty of this selection lies in its simplicity. Sowing happens in late winter to early spring,

there is no need for seed trays, greenhouses, or meticulous spacing. Simply scatter the seeds thinly, press them gently into the earth so they make good contact, and water them in. By the time the summer months arrive, the garden undergoes a breathtaking transformation. From June through September, these plants burst into colour. As one species peaks, another steps up to take its place, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh blooms for both your eyes and the local pollinators. These annuals define easy care. Once established, they require very little intervention. They thrive in average, well-drained soil and prefer a sunny spot, just water them during prolonged dry spells and deadhead the spent blooms if you want to prolong the flowering season. A LOVE STORY AT THE HEART OF BRAMHALL CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF ED AND MIKE

Behind every successful local business is a story. For Ed and Mike, the couple behind Ed’s Hair in Bramhall, theirs is one of love, ambition, hard work and a shared determination to give something back to the community they now call home. Their journey began more than 5,000 miles away. In May 2006, Mike travelled to Brazil to meet Ed after the pair had spent six months getting to know each other online. Two months later, Ed closed his salon in Brazil and moved to the UK to begin a new life with Mike. After moving to Stockport in 2009, Ed worked in Poynton while they built a mobile hairdressing business together. As their clientele grew, they opened their first Ed’s Hair salon in Salford in 2011. But Bramhall had always caught Ed’s eye. When they first moved to Stockport, Ed regularly passed a stylish salon in Bramhall Village and imagined how wonderful it would be to work somewhere like it. Six years later, in June 2015, Ed and Mike opened their second Ed’s Hair salon in that very location. Eleven years on, Ed’s Hair has become an established part of Bramhall, welcoming clients 20 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2026

locally and from further afield. The salon is particularly known for Brazilian blow-dries, balayage and modern colour techniques, while continuing to offer a full range of hairdressing services. Ed and Mike continually reinvest in education, new technology and professional products, while supporting their employed team to learn, develop and build lasting careers. Their commitment also extends beyond the salon. As active members of the Bramhall Together Trust, they support community events including the Bramhall Summer Festival and Light Up Bramhall, alongside local schools, charities and community initiatives. This September, Ed and Mike celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. From Brazil to Bramhall, their journey has been built on partnership, hard work and community. LALIQUE TREASURE TROVE COULD TEMPT CHESHIRE COLLECTORS TO HANSONS’ BISHTON HALL AUCTION A stunning collection of René Lalique glassware could tempt Cheshire collectors to Bishton Hall after an unexpected haul of eight pieces was uncovered by auction experts. The discovery was made when valuer Oliver Sparkes was working through a huge consignment of ceramics and glass ahead of the 22nd September auction. Among the treasures is a beautiful René Lalique Doreen Vase, No. 979, which is expected to be one of the sale’s star lots. Standing 21.5cm tall, the vase is made from opalescent and blue-stained glass and is engraved underneath with ‘R Lalique’ and ‘France’. It carries an estimate of £600-£800. But the vase was just the beginning. The team has so far discovered eight pieces by the celebrated French glass designer, creating a fascinating collection within the wider consignment. Other finds include a Bulbes plate from 1935, estimated at £200-£300; a Coquilles bowl, model 3200, dating from 1924 and estimated at £250-£350; an Olympe Cherub plate from the 1970s, estimated at £60-£80; an Anemone flower sculpture paperweight from 1931, estimated at £100-£150; a Paquerettes plate from 1935, estimated at £150-£200; and a Domremy, designed in 1926. The pieces showcase Lalique’s distinctive approach to glass, from delicate floral and natural forms to sculptural designs. His work continues to attract collectors, with pieces spanning his long and influential career particularly appealing to those interested in the development of decorative glass during the 20th

century. For Cheshire collectors, Hansons’ Bishton Hall auction could provide an opportunity to add a piece of Lalique to their collection - or simply enjoy the thrill of bidding on a remarkable group of pieces that emerged unexpectedly from a much larger consignment. Oliver said: “It’s always exciting to find something special when you’re working through a large consignment, but discovering eight Lalique pieces together was a particularly lovely surprise. The Domremy Vase is a real standout and should attract plenty of interest when it goes under the hammer.” The Lalique pieces will go under the hammer at Hansons’ Bishton Hall on 22nd September. COMPANIES HOUSE GETS SERIOUS!

ompanies House has always reminded me of that easy-going teacher we all had at school. You’d hand in your homework, they’d nod politely, pop it in a drawer and rarely ask too many questions. Not anymore. The government has given Companies House a much bigger role under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act. Instead of simply collecting information, it is now expected to challenge it where necessary. The aim is straightforward: make it much harder to use UK companies for fraud or other criminal activity. The biggest change is identity verification. Every company director and every Person with Significant Control (PSC) will need to prove they are who they claim to be. New directors will have to complete the checks before they can be appointed, while existing directors will be given time to verify their identity. The checks can be completed directly through Companies House or via an authorised agent. To be honest, it’s a sensible change. For years it has been surprisingly easy to register companies using false or misleading information. Going forward, if your name is Donald Duck, Companies House may well ask to see your passport.

Another change affects small and micro companies. Until now, many businesses have been comfortable knowing their Profit & Loss account stayed between themselves, HMRC and their accountant. Under the new rules, it will also be submitted to Companies House. Before anyone starts worrying about competitors picking through their figures, there’s some reassurance. Although Companies House will receive the Profit & Loss account, the intention is that it will not be made publicly available. As you would expect, all of this comes at a cost. Filing fees have increased, with the additional

revenue being used to fund the new identity checks and enforcement powers. Perhaps the biggest change is one that most businesses won’t notice directly. Historically, Companies House’s role was largely administrative. If forms were completed correctly, they were usually accepted. Now Companies House has powers to question information, reject documents, remove inaccurate information from the register and share intelligence with law enforcement where appropriate. That’s a significant shift in how it operates. The reforms won’t stop here. Eventually, anyone filing documents at Companies House will need to verify their identity, while paper filing will gradually disappear in favour of digital filing through approved software. For most honest business owners, none of this should be a cause for concern. There will be a little more administration and probably another online verification request from your accountant now and then. Those who have treated Companies House as somewhere they could file almost anything without challenge may find life rather different. As accountants, we’ve always encouraged clients to keep accurate records and file correct information. The difference now is that Companies House has both the powers and the resources to ask more questions when something doesn’t look right.

BRAMHALL SUMMER FESTIVAL BRINGS THE WHOLE VILLAGE TOGETHER The Bramhall Summer Festival has once again proved to be one of the village’s most cherished community events, with thousands of residents and visitors coming together to enjoy a fantastic day of entertainment, food, music and celebration last Saturday, 20 June. From the moment the festival opened, the entire village came alive with an incredible atmosphere. Families, friends, neighbours, children and even dogs filled the streets, creating a true celebration of community spirit. Live music kept crowds entertained throughout the day on The Strawberry Radio Stage, with dancing in the streets, laughter all around, and plenty of Pimms, wine and beer flowing as festival-goers made the most of the glorious summer atmosphere. The festival market was bustling from start to finish, with market traders reporting a hugely successful day. Local shops, cafes, bars and restaurants were equally busy, highlighting the important role the festival plays in supporting Bramhall’s thriving independent business community.

The event was attended by local MP Tom Morris, the Mayor of Stockport, and local councillors, all of whom enjoyed meeting residents and experiencing the vibrant spirit that makes Bramhall such a special place. Beetroot with Tahini dressing This is one of those surprise recipes that everyone loves even though they normally avoid the star ingredient. Anyway, I’ve been asked for this recipe so many times that I thought getting it into SK magazine was as good a way as any of passing it on.

Beetroot with Tahini dressing 1kg raw beetroot 2tbsp olive oil 2tsp cumin seeds 1 red onion 1 preserved lemon 1 lemon

Put a little olive oil into a frying pan and add the cumin seeds – frying gently for about 3 minutes. Pour the seeds and oil over the beetroot. Peel and finely slice the onion (I use a mandolin), chop the preserved lemon removing the seeds as you go. Add both to the beetroot. Chop the dill (keeping some back for decoration) and add that to the beetroot too with the juice of the lemon. Season generously with salt and a little black pepper and give it a good stir to combine everything then put in into a serving dish.

1tbsp tahini

In a bowl combine the tahini and the yoghurt and dot over the beetroot and give is a very slight stir, top with the remaining dill and serve.

150g Greek yoghurt

I like it as part of a spread including roast meats.

15g of fresh dill

Pre heat the oven to 220 c (or use an air fryer) Scrub the beetroot but leave the skin on and lay them on a sheet of foil – drizzle with olive oil and then wrap them loosely in the foil and put into the oven for about 45 mins (maybe longer depending on size) They are cooked when a knife passes through them easily. When they are cool enough to handle – peel the skin off and slice into 0.5 cm slices and leave to cool completely. 32 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2026

WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?

he world changed while we were busy living in it. When did we stop needing cash? When did menus become QR codes? When did we start talking to our watches, asking speakers what the weather will be like, and needing a password just to do almost anything?

— but how many do we actually print? Music was different too. You waited for your favourite song to come on the radio, cassette recorder at the ready, desperately hoping the DJ wouldn’t talk over the beginning. Albums were listened to from start to finish.

The strange thing about change is that it rarely happens all at once. It creeps in quietly while we’re busy getting on with life. Then one day you look around and realise just how different the world has become. Think about how much has changed within one lifetime. There was a time when leaving the house meant you were genuinely uncontactable. If you arranged to meet somebody outside a shop at 2pm, you simply had to be there. No text saying, “Running five minutes late.” No location sharing. No little blue ticks to tell you your message had been read and completely ignored. And somehow, everyone managed.

REMEMBER WHEN… Photographs were different. You might take 24 photographs during an entire holiday, send the film away and wait to discover whether you’d captured a beautiful family photograph or 24 slightly blurry pictures with someone’s thumb in the corner. But those photographs mattered. They went into albums, drawers and shoeboxes. Years later, finding one could transport you straight back to a particular day. Today we can take hundreds of photographs without giving it a second thought

There were handwritten letters, birthday cards through the door and telephone numbers people actually knew by heart. If you wanted to know something, you couldn’t immediately Google it. You asked somebody. And sometimes they were completely wrong. The things that quietly disappeared, Of course, it isn’t about saying everything was better in the past. So many changes have made life easier. Families separated by hundreds or even thousands of miles can see one another on a screen. Shopping can arrive at the front door. Photographs of a new grandchild can be shared within seconds. But perhaps we’ve lost a few lovely things along the way too. The unexpected knock at the door. Knowing the people who lived along your street. Sitting around a table without a phone beside every plate. Continued on page 36

Community Care Going on holiday and actually being away from everything. Children playing outside until somebody shouted that tea was ready. And the rather wonderful freedom of having absolutely no idea what everybody else was doing. An extraordinary generation of change Sometimes older generations are described as being “bad with technology”. Perhaps we should look at that differently. People who grew up with a telephone attached to the wall are now expected to understand smartphones, apps, online banking, passwords, contactless payments, streaming services, QR codes and two-factor authentication. That’s quite an achievement when you think about it. Within one lifetime, we’ve gone from handwritten letters to instant messages. From vinyl records to almost every song ever recorded being available at the touch of a button. From looking things up in an encyclopaedia to asking a tiny device in the kitchen almost anything. From waiting days to develop photographs to seeing the face of a new grandchild seconds after they’re born. That’s not simply watching the world change, it’s learning how to live in a completely different one. But perhaps we can keep a few things. Progress is wonderful, but not everything old needs replacing. Maybe it’s still nice to receive a handwritten card. Maybe sometimes a telephone call is better than a text. Maybe children should know the stories behind the old photographs rather than simply scroll past them.

And perhaps we should ask more questions of the people who remember the world before ours looked like this. What was Saturday night like when you were 20? What did your first week’s wages buy? Where did you go on your first holiday? What song takes you straight back to being young? Because those aren’t simply memories, they’re part of our history. And while the world will undoubtedly continue changing, I think we can all agree on one thing. Sometimes, when all you want is a cup of tea and a sandwich…a proper menu would be nice. Over to you… What is one completely ordinary thing from years gone by that has disappeared — and you’d bring back tomorrow if you could? # DON’T LET SEPTEMBER SWEEP YOU AWAY

This summer has been a good one. Weeks of sunshine, more time outdoors, evenings that stretch on without needing a coat. For families, the school holidays have brought the usual mix of freedom and chaos — no school run, no packed lunches, no 7am alarm, but no routine either, and by August most parents are running on a strange blend of relaxed and worn out. The roads have been quieter too. Fewer commuters, fewer queues. Even without children, you’ll have felt it: Cheshire in August moves at a different pace.

Then September arrives and it all snaps back at once. School gates reopen, diaries fill up, and within a fortnight the summer feels like it happened to someone else. From there the year picks up speed on its own. Half term, then Halloween, then Bonfire Night, then Christmas lights are up in the village and someone’s asking about New Year plans. Most of us end up saying the same thing: how is it Christmas already? The working year in this country is largely built around school holidays, whether you have children or not. Offices empty out in August, meetings get harder to schedule, the whole pace slackens. It’s a shared rhythm, worth noticing before it’s gone. So before term properly starts, take a moment to notice where you are, rather than planning the fifty things needing doing before September. 40 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2026

Be present with the last of the summer. A walk without your phone. Ten minutes outside with a coffee, doing nothing else. That’s enough. As the pace picks up again in autumn, the same principle holds. You don’t need an intense new fitness regime to feel grounded — a daily walk is fine. A few minutes of quiet breathing or meditation before the day starts helps. So does proper hydration and decent meals, rather than whatever’s fastest between school runs and meetings. None of this is dramatic. It’s just a reset after a long, hot summer.

September will speed things up whether we like it or not. But how present we are within it is still up to us. Enjoy what’s left of the summer. Then carry the same habit — a bit of quiet, a walk, a proper meal — through the busier months ahead. Christmas will still come round fast. At least this time you’ll have noticed the months in between.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PILATES CLASS Thinking about trying Pilates but not sure where to start? With so many classes available, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you. Social media is full of impressive images of advanced Pilates exercises, but don’t be fooled into thinking that being able to perform difficult movements automatically makes someone a great teacher. The real skill lies in knowing how to teach those exercises safely, adapting them to suit different abilities, body types and learning styles. Here are a few things to look for when choosing a Pilates class. Choose a Qualified Instructor Look for an instructor who has completed comprehensive training with a recognised Pilates training provider accredited to UK Level 3 and the Society for the Pilates Method standards. Good instructors continue to develop their knowledge through regular workshops and their own Pilates practice. Don’t be afraid to ask about their qualifications and teaching experience. After all, you wouldn’t learn to drive with someone who trained in a weekend! A Good Instructor Adapts to You No two bodies are the same. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing a longterm condition or simply new to exercise, your instructor should be happy to offer modifications. Some people need an exercise made easier, while others are ready for an extra challenge. A quality class allows everyone to work at the right level without feeling left behind or pushed beyond their limits. If something doesn’t feel right or causes pain, always let your instructor know. Pilates should challenge you, but it should never hurt. Focus on Technique Pilates is all about quality rather than quantity. Clear instruction, breathing cues and gentle corrections help you perform each exercise safely and effectively. Good alignment is also essential. Your instructor should regularly refer to your posture, pelvis, ribcage, shoulders and head position, helping you develop greater body awareness that often carries over into everyday life.

Alignment is Everything Pilates develops body awareness like few other forms of exercise. A good instructor will regularly talk about your posture and alignment, including your pelvis, ribcage, shoulders, head and neck. As your awareness grows, you’ll begin to notice habits and imbalances you may never have realised were there. Learning to move with better alignment doesn’t just improve your Pilates practice—it often makes everyday activities feel easier too. Be Patient Like any form of exercise, Pilates delivers the best results through consistency. With regular practice you’ll gradually notice improvements in strength, flexibility, balance, posture and confidence in the way you move. Mat Classes or One-to-One? Matwork is the most common form of Pilates and often incorporates small pieces of equipment such as resistance bands, balls or foam rollers to add support or increase the challenge. If you’re feeling nervous about joining a group, a one-to-one session can be an excellent introduction. It allows the programme to be tailored to your individual needs and helps build confidence before progressing to a class. Choosing the right instructor is just as important as choosing the right exercise. A supportive, knowledgeable teacher will help you move safely, improve your technique and enjoy the many benefits that Pilates has to offer.
