Puzzles are such a great way to stay busy and mentally stimulated, there are lots to choose from, but we are going to focus on jigsaw puzzles. Jigsaws are relatively cheap, easy to get hold of; available from book, charity and stationery shops (plus picking one up from your village or town will help local businesses too) and of course, there are plenty of options to buy online. While puzzles benefit people of all ages, the benefits of jigsaws are especially noticeable for older people. Studies have shown that doing jigsaw puzzles can improve cognition and visualspatial reasoning. The act of putting the pieces of a puzzle together concentrationrequiresand improves short-term memory and problem solving. According to Harvard Health Publishing building a healthy cognitive reserve can potentially help reduce the risk of developing dementias like Alzheimer’s disease. Physiotherapists working with older people have noted how the small, precise movements required when doing a jigsaw are beneficial especially when people do not have many opportunities to use their hands in daily activities. And because a jigsaw is so focused it is naturally relaxing to the mind and body and a good way to help stay calm and reduce anxiety. Jigsaw puzzles are also a great way to reminisce and look back on happy memories either on your own or with a friend or family member. There are such a huge variety of subjects, scenes and landscapes printed onto puzzle pieces.

I recently bought a jigsaw for myself that featured characters from the TV shows of my childhood it was great to bring it to life and remember with fondness Mr Ben, Bagpuss, The Adventures of Parsley the Lion and The Wombles! I then passed it on to my brother and sister-inlaw who enjoyed putting it together with their children who couldn’t quite believe what we all used to watch when we were young. We can pick up puzzles that feature our favourite places too, the locations of where we used to visit for days out and the destinations of our family holidays. There are even nostalgia puzzles with scenes of films from years gone by, royal celebrations and comic books. It is also possible to have our own personal images printed onto jigsaw pieces, for example, a family portrait, a much-loved pet or a special memory such as a wedding. Whether you puzzle alone, share it with family or friends, decide to puzzle in one go or spread it over days and weeks you will benefit in so many ways – give it a go!

Assuming the accuracy of Darwin’s theory of natural selection and evolution, it can be concluded that favouring caution and risk aversion must be a survival boosting trait. (Of course this is just the average brainwave pattern. There are billions of people with more left skewed brains too, and the further you go to the left, the more optimistic and positive those brains are, and the further to the right the more likely you are to find chronic stress, anxiety and depression.)

Why does this matter to me?

16 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2022

Recent discoveries in neuroscience and neuroplasticity (the changes in brain structure which occur based on our thoughts and behaviour) have shown that we can SHIFT our own PFL brain wave pattern over time. If we become more stressed and anxious then our brainwaves shift more to the right, and conversely, if we practice mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and other emotional resilience building activities, our brainwaves shift to the Overleft. time, due to neuroplasticity, our neurons become “re-wired” making the changes more permanent, and thus we can literally build a different brain based on what we do and how we Youlive.might ask why we would want to shift our brainwaves to the left, given the optimal evolutionary position is to be skewed to the right, and the answer is that humans simply do not face the same risks to our lives that we evolved to face, such as frequent wars, illness, childbirth and all-cause infant mortality. In fact, natural selection all but ceased the moment developments in medical science, law and order and the abundance of food reduced the death rate from the above factors, so do we really need to be as risk averse and pessimistic these days?

In a world of opportunity, safety and relative prosperity, maybe these natural tendencies could be holding us back more than keeping us safe. To conclude; we are largely stuck with the brains we now have in an ever more complex world, meaning that neuroplastic change is pretty much all we have to hone and enhance our brains. It would therefore be beneficial for humans to engage in activities such as yoga, mindfulness and self care which promote a more resilient, optimistic and happier brain neuroplasticthroughchange.

mindset Advice ARE HUMANS DESIGNED TO WORRY?

In people with higher incidences of depression, anxiety, stress and pessimism, the neuronal activity is found to be more concentrated on the right side of the PFL. For people who report themselves as happier, more relaxed, calmer and more optimistic, the neuron activity favours the left side. Interestingly, brainwave activity among humans is NOT evenly spread between the left and right sides. As the graph shows, the average human brainwave pattern is skewed to the right, meaning that most humans are by default more pessimistic, risk averse, cautious and a little anxious. So yes, you could say that humans are ‘designed’ to worry. Why might this be?

Brainwave activity in the pre-frontal lobe (“PFL”), which is the most cognitive, rational and ‘human’ part of the brain, can occur in both the left and right sides.

If you are not sure if your project can succeed, or you don’t know how to achieve it in practice, you may be resolving technological uncertainties and be carrying out qualifying R&D without realising.

If your company is taking a risk by attempting to ‘resolve scientific or technological uncertainties’ then you may be carrying out qualifying activity including creating new products, processes or services and changing or modifying an existing product, process or service.

Within the government’s accepted research and development definition, your R&D does not have to have been successful to qualify for financial Thisassistance.listisfar from exhaustive, but the typical qualifying costs for R&D include staff salaries along with NIC and pension costs; the costs of subcontractors and freelancers working on the project and some types of software.

R&D tax credits are calculated based on your R&D spend. To make an R&D credit calculation, you need to identify qualifying expenditure and enhance it by the relevant rate (see below). This determines your ‘enhanced expenditure’. When you deduct your enhanced expenditure from your taxable profits, or add it to your loss, the result is: n a Corporation Tax reduction if you are profit-making. n a cash credit if you are loss-making. n or a combination of the two.

R&D tax credits applied to profitable businesses, reduce their Corporation tax bill. The rate of relief is 25%. So if your R&D spend last year was £100,000, you could get a £25,000 reduction in your tax bill. Loss making businesses receive their R&D tax credit by direct payment because they do not have a tax liability to offset. The rate of relief is up to 33%. So if your R&D spend last year was £100,000, you could get a £33,000 payment from HMRC. This is a complicated area, and as a result many companies that are entitled to make a claim, either may not even know about the reliefs available or assume that they would not meet the criteria. If you think your business may apply then you should speak to yourpeter@bevan.co.ukCharteredBevanPeteraccountant.Bevan&Co,Accountants

n How and when were the uncertainties actually overcome?

HMRC provides Research and Development (R&D) reliefs to support companies that work on innovative projects in science and technology. There are four basic but powerful questions which will provide the fundamental insights required to assess your project’s eligibility to make a claim:

IS YOUR BUSINESS ONE OF THE THOUSANDS OF COMPANIES ELIGIBLE FOR R&D TAX CREDITS BUT NOT CLAIMING IT?

Saturday was the beginning of the two-day competition. There were some great scores, and it left the competitors with a quandary as the social event was scheduled for Saturday evening. A Mixed, relaxed environment to include a BBQ and entertainment, was organised by the President. What a night it was!

As Singer and Entertainer Aaron Welby thrilled the crowd the hopes and dreams of some of the competitors faded with each passing drink that was consumed. It is safe to say that Sunday morning brought some sore heads, some regretful looks and some interesting second day scoring. The event was superb and just goes to show the camaraderie felt within Bramhall’s Themembership.Jubileewas played on the last weekend of July having been cancelled on its original date due to

The social scene at Bramhall is the very fabric that makes this club a fantastic place to be a member. June saw the welcome return of the larger social events that follow the major competitions. Lady Captains Day which was followed by the very well attended Ladies Captains Party got things off to a cracking start. The ladies at Bramhall certainly know how to let their hair down. Our Christmas Tree Collections are solely dependent on our amazing volunteers and the inspiring work that they do before, during and after the Christmas period. We pride our Christmas Tree Collection as an immensely enjoyable and rewarding day. We are always looking for new energy, skills and experience to help expand our collection. The success of our collections derives from the people who organise and deliver them. Whether it’s collecting trees, canvassing leaflets, or getting involved in the organisational elements. Don’t hesitate - get Pleaseinvolved!contact the Just Helping Team at admin@just-helping.org.uk

It was great to finally visit St Ann’s Hospice in Little Houlton and celebrate the JustHelping Christmas Tree Collection which raised £42,166.76 for St Ann’s Hospice. Our JustHelping volunteer team, led by Iain and Fiona and supported fantastically by Kay, Amanda and Mark, have done remarkable work in building and expanding their Christmas Tree Collection across South Manchester. This allows JustHelping to support St Ann’s Hospice in providing specialist palliative care for people with life-limiting conditions, at all stages of their illness. Our Christmas Tree Collection is an enjoyable event which brings the community together. This year, we were able to assemble 120 volunteers who helped spread awareness, collect and recycle trees. We are immensely grateful to all of the individuals, organisations and corporates who supported the execution of this collection. We would like to especially thank everyone involved in the sponsorship, design and delivery of all of our marketing materials. Every posted leaflet, placed banner and shared social media post invaluably helps to spread the word of the amazing work that we do. Thank you!! JustHelping is immensely grateful for those who provide us with venues, tree chippers and vans. Your generosity and support enabled the collection and recycling of 3,468 Christmas trees in the South Manchester Area.

All of our corporate support is invaluable in the execution of the event. Local businesses who lend their staff on CSR days are instrumental in helping collect and recycle the trees. We are immensely grateful for the hard work and energy of their volunteers during the collection period. We hope you found the event enjoyable and

Ienjoy watching Saturday morning cookery programmes and am particularly smitten with James Martin and his outdoor kitchen! I was watching this weekend and he made this dish which I immediately decided to try. It was sooooo easy and very delicious. We had is with roast lamb but I think chicken would be workedbutcouplehaveitwhatI’mwithbrilliantittoo.notsurehecalledandImaychangedaofthingsregardlessitverywell.

A big chunk of cheddar grated. Put the butter into a large frying pan and add the leeks. Let the leeks sweat without browning them. When they are relatively soft pour over the cream and bring to a gentle bubble. Season with salt and pepper then transfer to a shallow ovenproof dish. Tear up the brioche and place roughly onto the leeks pressing the pieces into the creamy mixture slightly. Put under a hot grill to brown off the brioche a bit –be careful as it burns really

1. Don’t ‘stabilise’ your shoulders by forcing them down your back, this will only jam them up more.2.Allow the shoulders to melt down the back, visualising the distance between your shoulders and ears getting bigger and bigger.

6. Enjoy the feeling of being wide and open across your chest. Notice how your head starts to return to a much more natural position, your eye level will be straight ahead....... so, smile and greet the world.

3. Think about the tips at the bottom of your shoulder blades gently drawing in towards your spine.

5. When you have a sense of those muscles working, gently pulse them a few times a day, keeping the shoulders relaxednotice that as you work these muscles your breastbone lifts upwards.

28 SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2022

Just like for back issues, we need to look at the whole body to see if we can identify the cause of shoulder pain, discomfort and dysfunction (if you’ve suffered a traumatic injury to your shoulder, then the problem is much easier to identify). A key point to remember if you are suffering is that the major joints in our bodies alternate in their need for stability and Ifmobility.westart at the feet, the ankle joint is designed for mobility. Working upwards, this means the knees are designed for stability. That’s a really important concept to understand, because our bodies are masters at compensation, so if we lose mobility at one joint, such as the ankle, the knee will become more mobile to compensate for this! As the knee joint is designed for stability, if there is too much mobility, it fairly quickly leads to dysfunction and Lookingpain. at the shoulders, they’re designed for stability, so that means the thoracic spine (the upper part of the spine) needs to be mobile, otherwise it will cause dysfunction in the Weshoulderscanalso follow this logic down the body –are your shoulder problems caused by a problem that started in the lumbar region or the hips? Perhaps it was lower still, in the knees? Or did the problem start with stiff ankles? Don’t despair, all is not lost! This is where Pilates comes in: the moves you do in a Pilates class all work to keep the mobility and the stability in the right areas of your body, keeping your body as compensation-free as possible! As well as recommending joining a Pilates class, here are a few tips to follow at home

4. Be aware of those lower muscles working - they are often very switched off so be aware it may take a while to sense this, do NOT force.

Both at Cromford Mill and Quarry Bank Mill, we can learn everything there is to know about the manufacture of cotton.  The process of carding right through to spinning, weaving and production of garments and textiles started hundreds of years ago in the homes of weavers, but it was only in the late 1700’s that we see a rapid development of machinery moving out of the home and into mills and factories.

Greater Manchester, Cheshire and the surrounding areas are filled with some of the best places for us to learn about the history of textiles, their textile mills and for the manufacture of silk, cotton and wool.

Cromford Mill was one of Richard Arkwright’s first mills, using his invention of the water wheel.

The site is huge and set beside a canal where the water wheel once powered the huge mill filled with machines.  There you can see a punch card machine on which patterns are designed, the cards fed into the weaving machines.

At Quarry Bank Mill, built in 1784, in Cheshire, you can see a water wheel which was also designed by Richard Arkwright.  Quarry Bank, just like Cromford Mill, shows the full process of
