A

s I write this, the housing market has a huge supply and demand problem. Usual amount of demand, not enough supply.

That means that, for the moment, we’re all staying put. Perhaps it’s the unusual times we’re living in, perhaps we want some stability right now, whatever it is, it means that we need our homes to work for us now more than ever. Our bedrooms, no matter what our age, should be a calming and beautiful sanctuary. Now, how can that be the case if every time you open a cupboard you’re met with an avalanche of ‘stuff’? Clothes for every eventuality of our British weather, odd shoes, bedding, jewellery, the vacuum! You name it, we squeeze it in.

Don’t worry, in my experience of working with people in their homes, this is just about everybody.

There’s never enough space (it’s definitely not that we have too many clothes) (or shoes!).

There are easy and practical solutions. I don’t mean just throwing a load of shelves up from a well known Swedish home store that will look generic and fall apart quicker than a wet Digestive. It can be stylish and a gorgeous addition to your bedroom décor.

Behind your bed is a missed opportunity. People may hang a picture but moving the bed out just a few inches or more if you can spare it, creates a large, shallow surface area. Sliding doors and

shelves, perfect for books, jewellery, make up etc. The top can hold your lamp, books, perfume etc. The fronts can be panelled, painted plain or stencilled. There are lots of good stencils on the market that are easy to use.

Another very simple and massively missed opportunity is the bedside table. Traditionally it’s a small unit, one drawer that holds, well, rubbish really along with your bedtime reading, pop your lamp on top and that’s it.

Replace it with a small sideboard and voila, you have tons of room.

Take a look around at what is going for a small price and repurpose it, paint, take a door off, or have something fabulous made to measure. Either will look fantastic and be much roomier.

One of my favourites for a mountain of extra storage is a high shelf. They don’t take anything off the room as they’re way above the eye-line. You can use pretty boxes, not too many of these or they look cluttered. Just putting all of your books up there will look like a library for tall people. Break it up, add vases, plants and picture. Colour co-ordinate things to add interest, use string lights to draw attention to something, use different levels with a taller picture frame, a few books, next to a hanging plant. Faux plants are great here so you don’t need to think about watering them.

MUSIC MEMORIES

f I had to make a choice to live without the TV or Music, I would choose music every time.

The reason being is that music brings me so much joy and hearing a certain tune can take me straight back to a happy place and time in an instant. It has the ability to recall particular emotions and change our mood, that’s quite a powerful thing.

When you dig a bit deeper into this subject you find that there is a lot of research into the positive impact of music and our well-being.

I have learnt that listening to music reactivates areas of the brain associated with memory, reasoning, speech and emotion.

Harvard Health Blog reports music listeners had higher scores for mental well-being compared to people overall and active musical engagement, including those over age 50, was associated with higher rates of happiness and cognitive function.

The reason music is such a powerhouse is that it has been shown to activate some of the broadest and most diverse networks of the brain.

This connection between music and memory is also recognised as a way to benefit people with dementia, helping to improve psychological symptoms such as depression, agitation or aggression. NHS England covers this topic on its website, writing how it can ‘enhance the quality of life of people living with dementia.’

This aspect of music and memory is very much of interest as what we learn we can share with our care team, clients and their family members

too. As part of our own research, I came across Music4d Radio (Music for Dementia). A group of 5 themed radio stations available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year playing music that evokes memories.

It’s a brilliant idea that was developed as a direct response to the impact of Covid-19 lockdown measures. You can choose your birth year to listen to the musical decade where your musical memories were made, typically from our early teen years through to our late twenties. The site gives you the option to listen live or at another time and you can even build your own schedule. I highly recommend this site www.music4d.com for anyone with dementia their carers, family and friends. Supporting someone with dementia can be challenging at times but listening and reminiscing to music together is one way to change the mood.

Mindset Advice ARE YOU A ‘HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON’ (HSP) Are you a Highly Sensitive Person?

This might seem a strange way to title an article, and I suppose it is really, but nonetheless, I bet there are quite a few of you reading this thinking “well, actually, yes, I think I am!”

By ‘Highly Sensitive Person’ (HSP), I am referring specifically to a personality type identified by Dr Elaine Aron in her research which began in 1991, rather than to people who simply feel they are sensitive. The questionnaire to determine someone’s true status can be found on her website www.hsperson.com Generally, a HSP will be more aware of subtleties in their environment and in the moods and needs of others.

They will be more bothered by high levels of stimulation such as crowds, loud noises or chaos around them and they are usually very thoughtful and observant, often needing time alone to process their thoughts and feelings. About 70% of HSP are introverts.

On average for every 5 people who read this, one of you will be highly sensitive.

It is important to point out at this stage that being a HSP is not a negative thing, it is simply a personality type, and many people who learn how to understand and harness their sensitivity will thrive and even start to see it as somewhat of a super-power.

But why am I talking about this?

The reason is, that I work predominantly in the mental health sector, and since the start of the pandemic, I have noticed that a large majority of my clients are HSP, despite HSP making up only 20% of the population. This led me to think that HSP may need more support to thrive in the modern world than non-HSP. I subsequently discovered that Dr Aron herself found in 2010 that 50% of people seeking support with mental health are HSP. Based on my experience in 2020 and 2021 however, I would say it could be a lot higher than this right now.

Why is this the case?

The reason for this trend is firstly because the world just isn’t structured to suit the minority in any category. Disabled access to schools and workplaces is still not available as standard in the UK, so it is hardly a surprise that the world isn’t structured to suit the HSP minority, and nor will it ever be.

Secondly, the restrictions and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic have destabilised the structures and support networks which HSP depend on more than others, thus affecting them more, and further increasing the number and percentage of HSP seeking help with their mental health.

Unfair as this seems, society simply will not address this situation, and it is down to the individuals to seek further knowledge and help to enable themselves to thrive.

I would recommend that all readers of this article take the questionnaire on Dr Aron’s website, and then, if you are a HSP (you can test your children too), to educate yourself on what this means for you and how you can use it to your advantage using the many resources outlined on her website. This can bring almost immediate relief to your life.

What sewing essentials does a beginner need?

have often been asked, ‘What sewing essentials does a beginner need?’ There is so much to choose from, and what does a sewer really need? Here are my essentials;

1 - Tailoring / Dressmaking shears. These shears lie flat against the table, with the handle, pivoted upward. This makes it easier to keep fabric on the surface as you cut. The angled handle makes it easier to hold, so no more uncomfortable wrist bends.

2 - Box Set of Thread. A good thread makes a huge difference to the finished result and the life of a project, and in fact can make a huge difference in your sewing machine (or hand sewing). The weight and the twist are a complicated math mystery, so just go with a brand name you can trust, like Gutermann, Coats and Mettler. Gutermann now make their threads from recycled plastic!

3 - Seam Gauge / Rulers are something I use often. Measuring small areas, hems and cuffs, zip widths, seam allowances and even drawing around patchwork pieces is so much easier with a ruler.

4 - A Clapper is hugely under rated and under used. I use mine on almost everything I press (crucial to a great finish). A clapper is just a piece of hard wood (Beech is ideal - look in timbers yard). Watch my YouTube tutorial on how to make one for you.

5 - A mini iron and teflon finger tips for a crisp edge and finish. The teflon fingers are a great plus to save your fingertips from scalding, or when you need to hold onto the fabric very close to the iron.

Try to stay eco-friendly. Many products are still sold in plastic blister packs. We want to steer clear of those companies and encourage the wave of newcomers, endorsing a much greener way.

So, if you’re looking to buy a gift for someone special (and that’s right - I am talking about you! :-) ), then look me up on Youtube for great time saving tips and inexpensive ways to achieve great results in your projects. Keep up-cycling, and repurposing. Local thrift and charity shops have wonderful sewing sections, filled with patterns and fabrics.

BRAMHALL GOLF CLUB CAPTAIN 2021

T

his month SKBramhall & Woodford caught up with Alan Smith, the new captain at Bramhall Golf Club to see how is year was progressing.

“Taking on the role of Captain at Bramhall Golf Club was a huge honour for me having only started to play golf again in 2014. Previously I’d played at Davenport Golf Club but with a 20 year hiatus it felt as if I was starting again. Golf lovers will know this can be the case whenever we play” “With the support of staff and members my year to date has been amazing - better than I could have ever expected. Captain’s Weekend, held at the beginning of June, was a fabulous experience for me, despite not actually playing golf. Standing on the first tee for 8 hours and 6 hours each day to meet and greet those playing. The foot Captain pictured with the spa provided by winner Nigel Cruddos, my wife after well done Nigel! day 1 was most welcome! Of course, the weather played a large part in the weekend’s success, both sunny and warm for both days.”

“Captain’s Away Day, at the beginning of July, saw a group of members travel to Chesterfield Golf Club for; lunch, an 18 hole competition and a 2 course evening meal. Again the weather played its part in ensuring a successful and enjoyable day.”

“The good fortune, weather wise, continued on my third major event to date. Captain’s Day for Ladies saw me meet and greet the lady members playing off the first tee.

The foot spa proved invaluable again at the end of the day! A most enjoyable day from my perspective with our lady members being very generous.

The wine cellar is well and truly stocked!” Being more than halfway through my year as Captain evokes the adage, ‘time flies when you’re having fun’. It has been a wonderful experience and one which I will treasure for my remaining days. How perfect it would have been though if my actual golf game would have been just as perfect!

his month SK Magazines popped into Bramhall latest barber shop Famous Hernys to find out a little more about the company.

Famous Henrys, opened their first shop on Gillbent road , Cheadle Hulme in 2013, and now their latest barber shop in Bramhall is the fifth addition to the Famous Henrys family.

Already in Cheadle Hulme, Hazel Grove and Wilmslow, part of their success is down to being open 7 days a week, offering little complimentary extras for their customers from bottles of chilled Peroni, hot drinks and newspapers to the latest cuts and fades.

Head Barber Henry said about the latest opening: “We are so pleased to even have the chance to expand the business further. ’m writing this at the end of July on a very rainy day and hoping for some sunshine to come. Since I’m an optimist I’m going to assume that we are going to have a beautiful Indian Summer and you will be reading this whilst sitting outside in the sunshine.

This will keep nicely in the fridge in an airtight container for several days.

1 slice of stale bread

3 cloves of garlic 6 tbsps of freshly chopped coriander

4 tablespoons of good quality olive oil plus a bit extra for frying 2 cloves of garlic 5 dried cayenne chillies (2 teaspoons of cayenne powder will also work) 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika powder 2 teaspoons of sherry vinegar Salt Fry the bread in a little olive oil until lightly browned then drain on kitchen paper and tear into pieces. In a pestle and mortar mash the garlic, cayenne, cumin and paprika together until you have a smooth paste. At this point you can put it in a processor and whizz in the bread,

1 small green chilli Pinch of cumin seeds Salt 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 50ml good quality olive oil Put everything in your processor (or pestle and mortar) except the oil, then whizz/mash until mixed then drizzle in the oil and stir together til you have a sauce consistency.

Mojo verde will only keep for a couple of days in the fridge because of the fresh herbs.

So, what should you bring along for assessment?

Gaming consoles and vintage video games have been in hot demand at auction throughout lockdown but auction sales are buoyant generally. People with money and time to spare from all over the world love to bid online.

Antiques, collectables and jewellery fire the imagination and are desired for all manner of reasons by all kinds of people.

For example, interior designers love to scour our home décor and furniture items in search of something special for clients, and our summer Clock Auction was a good hunting ground for them.

The star lot, a French travelling alarm clock by famous French maker Antide Javier, made £6,200 - three times its top estimate - in a battle between American 23a French and French bidders. travelling alarm clock

TOP BEDROOM STORAGE IDEAS

A

s I write this, the housing market has a huge supply and demand problem. Usual amount of demand, not enough supply.

That means that, for the moment, we’re all staying put. Perhaps it’s the unusual times we’re living in, perhaps we want some stability right now, whatever it is, it means that we need our homes to work for us now more than ever. Our bedrooms, no matter what our age, should be a calming and beautiful sanctuary. Now, how can that be the case if every time you open a cupboard you’re met with an avalanche of ‘stuff’? Clothes for every eventuality of our British weather, odd shoes, bedding, jewellery, the vacuum! You name it, we squeeze it in.

Don’t worry, in my experience of working with people in their homes, this is just about everybody.

There’s never enough space (it’s definitely not that we have too many clothes) (or shoes!).

There are easy and practical solutions. I don’t mean just throwing a load of shelves up from a well known Swedish home store that will look generic and fall apart quicker than a wet Digestive. It can be stylish and a gorgeous addition to your bedroom décor.

Behind your bed is a missed opportunity. People may hang a picture but moving the bed out just a few inches or more if you can spare it, creates a large, shallow surface area. Sliding doors and

shelves, perfect for books, jewellery, make up etc. The top can hold your lamp, books, perfume etc. The fronts can be panelled, painted plain or stencilled. There are lots of good stencils on the market that are easy to use.

Another very simple and massively missed opportunity is the bedside table. Traditionally it’s a small unit, one drawer that holds, well, rubbish really along with your bedtime reading, pop your lamp on top and that’s it.

Replace it with a small sideboard and voila, you have tons of room.

Take a look around at what is going for a small price and repurpose it, paint, take a door off, or have something fabulous made to measure. Either will look fantastic and be much roomier.

One of my favourites for a mountain of extra storage is a high shelf. They don’t take anything off the room as they’re way above the eye-line. You can use pretty boxes, not too many of these or they look cluttered. Just putting all of your books up there will look like a library for tall people. Break it up, add vases, plants and picture. Colour co-ordinate things to add interest, use string lights to draw attention to something, use different levels with a taller picture frame, a few books, next to a hanging plant. Faux plants are great here so you don’t need to think about watering them.

TOUCHING THE EARTH LIGHTLY ECO FESTIVAL 14 – 16TH OCTOBER 2021 “Touching the Earth Lightly,” is a creative exploration of the climate emergency and our response to it.

It will take visitors on a journey though craft and floral installations, celebrating Creation and the beauty of our world.

The journey will then lead to an area of devastation, illustrating the harm man has done to the planet.

Different aspects of damage will be highlighted before leading towards an area of hope with green shoots of change.

Our aim is to raise awareness and inspire all who visit, showing that we can all make changes in our lives which will have a positive impact on the future of our planet.

Local floral artists have linked up with BMC flower arrangers and many other groups within the Church family are all getting involved. The Uniformed organisations, Pre-school and the art & craft group as well as local schools are helping to paint flowers which are gradually appearing outside Church. We started with the cross at

Easter with the hope of drawing attention to the festival by covering the front of church in re-cycled flowers, by October.

SOLE TRADER V LIMITED COMPANY?

S

tarting your own business is definitely very exciting. You are about to make your ideas a reality and start a process that can be very rewarding though not without risk. Your challenge is to take your enthusiasm, drive and skill set and turn them into a successful business.

One of your first decisions is to decide to conduct your business either as a sole trader or as a limited company. If high profits of £50k+ per year are forecast only from years 2 or 3 (or never), then consider starting to trade as a sole trader. You can make a start as a sole trader, put your toes in the water, and then sell your business to your own limited company in the future if profits rise.

Setting up a limited company immediately unleashes a legal responsibility along with higher levels of administration but the tax advantages of ‘being limited’ only really start to ‘kick-in’ with profits of around £50k per year.

Also consider that because of the complexity of limited company accounts your accountant’s fees will be higher. So for some, a limited company may not be the appropriate entity at first.

However the decision to be a sole trader or trade as a limited company sometimes is made based on factors other than profit levels and rates of tax. The limited company is a legal entity in its own right so if things do go very wrong it is the company in the spotlight not you. (Though a director of a company can be called to account if a company has been negligent or irresponsible in some way). The sole trader can be personally sued and risks their own assets if their business fails and owes creditors money. It may even be the case that you have a client or clients that you are about to work for and they stipulate that they can only engage you as a supplier if you are….and they tell you which entity they are only prepared to deal with.

Starting as a sole trader is easy. You simply register with HMRC, make sure you have

appropriate insurance cover and ideally set up a separate bank account for all your business transactions.

Setting up a company appears quite easy and there are many on-line offerings that can assist with the process but complexity lies in the details. A company can have different classes of shares and there could be advantages in starting the company with a few different share types allocated to yourself and your spouse (if you have one), and to children over the age of 18 years.

Including family members as shareholders does not mean they are at risk nor responsible for the company in some way. They are simply shareholders, and therefore can be paid dividends directly from the company. Dividends of up to £2000 a year are tax free and therefore this is a fantastic method of extracting profits from your company.

With a limited company, remember that it is a separate legal entity. It is not you! It must have its own bank account, must file annual accounts in a specific format as well as a corporation tax return.

I began by suggesting that starting a business was exciting which it is, but make sure you make the correct decision of which trading entity to use. Let your accountant guide you because in addition to the points mentioned above, your own circumstances, and the type of business you are embarking on are also factors involved in making the right choice.

THE EFFECTS OF FEEDING A BABY

T

here are many things that can affect the way a baby feeds, including positioning, handholds, tongue and jaw movement, but this post is going to focus on neck movement.

Babies can sometimes have tension in their neck which can lead to them having a preference as to which way they like to look.

There are a number of things that may contribute to this, including a tricky birth, possibly with forceps or ventouse and the position that the baby was in in-utero.

Neck tightness and a preference to look one way can sometimes mean that babies may find feeding more tricky on one side than the other. For example, if a baby is more comfortable looking to their right side they may feed well when they are turning that way, but when they are feeding on Mum’s right side they are being encouraged to look to their left, which may not be as easy.

The muscles in the neck are closely related to the muscles that control the jaw movements too.

Sometimes neck tightness can be linked to jaw tightness, particularly if a baby has had a tongue tie or if they are struggling to opening their mouth wide to establish a deep latch.

So how can we tell if a baby has any neck tightness?

Things to look out for are: l A baby that always looks one way. This is often noticeable when they are sleeping - do they always let their head rock to the same side?

Sometimes looking through pictures of the baby and seeing if there is a clear pattern can help! l If they have a particular preference for which side they feed from. Do they click when feeding just on one side? l Any flattening on one side of their head.

The bones in babies skulls are not fully fused when they are born, meaning their skulls are slightly softer. If they put more pressure on one side of their head this can sometimes lead to flattening on that side - often referred to as a plagiocephaly.

What can we do to help? l One of the best things to do is repositioning - encourage your baby to look to their less preferred side. This can often be done while playing - talking to them on that side and put toys on that side. In the car you can put a mobile or toy on their less preferred side. At night time you can arrange their crib so that you are on their less preferred side. l Trying different feeding positions that they may find more comfortable.

There are many to try such as the rugby ball, koala or side lying position. There are lots of feeding support groups available where you can go for more advice. l Tummy time - this is a great way for babies to build their neck strength and stretch the muscles at the front of their neck. You can mix it up so babies enjoy it more - for example tummy time on mum or dads chest is a great one because they are supported but can still see and interact with you.

There are also lots of tummy time mats available so your baby has new and interesting things to look at. l If you are concerned about your babies feeding there are many support services available, you can always speak to your GP, health visitor, midwife, local breast feeding support group or lactation consultants. l Osteopaths can work alongside lactation consultants to give postural advice related to breast feeding. Osteopathy is very gentle and can include massage that may relax tensions and help soothe your baby.
