To be honest I’m really finding it hard to find things to say as we continue “Waiting” for our lives to come out of this enforced hibernation. So I thought I’d leave it to local resident Margaret Clark, who sent in this lovely poem;

WAITING

Have you ever been in a ‘waiting room’? Hard floor - painted walls and a seat. Anxiety hangs like bated breath. No one, but no one speaks Ever been in a ‘waiting room’? The magazines obsolete, And the notices hang - so thick with dust. Are they really so up to date? Ever been in a ‘waiting room’? Your throat is dry, And your heart palpates And even if it wasn’t before, Your blood pressure is up to a peak. Ever been in a ‘waiting room’? It’s worse than what’s to come. You’ve nothing to do and nothing to say And the air is beginning to hum. Ever been in a ‘waiting room’? When our name is called at last. With a sense of relief, you leave your seat. Your turn has come - at last. Whatever the coming months have in store, please continue to support your local community, your local businesses & above all stay safe & stay positive.

or a while now we’ve left the plain behind in favour of texture in our homes. Plain tiles have given way to a tactile twist, glass has become fluted and wallpaper (OK I know we’ve always had blown vinyl and I still love it in hallways in certain homes) has become to look like the real feather, beads or marbled lines they depict. Therefore, with almost predictable certainty it’s now the turn of furniture. Grooves, layers, waves, flutes and they are absolutely gorgeous. I wouldn’t go with a full matching set of ‘groovy’ furniture, but a piece here and there will certainly give the room a designer’s touch. There are some super affordable and beautiful pieces available to grace your homes but make sure you pop some fresh accessories in there too, then it will really sing. Cane webbing in furniture is a popular choice for 2021. It gives vibes of tropical climes, a less formal look with the outdoors coming in. I think lockdown has influenced what we want in our homes. We are inside so much that having lots of heavy, plain furniture can be oppressive. We saw greens and tropical palms making a huge impact on interiors in 2020 and this feels like progression from that. I’ve heard of people using old furniture, removing a panel and replacing with cane webbing but I’m not sure I’m that brave. If you are, go for it, alternatively

there are lots of beautiful pieces on the market. Take advantage of recommended local craftspeople for a twist nobody else will have. If your fitted wardrobes were once the bee’s knees and cost you a fortune, they could be transformed with a little imagination and a lick of paint. You can paint almost anything these days! Perhaps it’s that bit under the stairs that the family use to dump stuff on the way in. Strip the paper off, a nifty design drawn up on the back of that random Year 8 textbook that’s been hanging around for a while, then make it happen. If you’re the handy sort (must own a spirit level!) then give it a go yourself, what’s the worst that can happen? You take it back off and paint over it, that’s about it. Pop a few hooks up, a nice basket, maybe a shelf and you have a new very useful area that didn’t previously exist, it may even encourage the family to throw their bags in the general direction of the basket and hang their coats and hats up (there’s always hope). KEEPING OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE

t is an understatement to say that it has been a difficult 12 months for most people due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are all learning to live with the ongoing restrictions and the impact of the public health, and economic emergencies. There is another ‘sting in the tail’ too, the emergence of those who seek to take advantage of the increased concern around the spread of Covid-19, especially targeting older people. Fortunately for us there are also those who work hard to raise awareness of such scams and regularly provide updates the latest scams, how to easily identify them and tips on how to keep you and your loved ones safe. One of the best sources is age UK as they provide information at a national and local level. Here are some of the recent Covid-19 scam related activity that have been reported: Fake lockdown fines: a bogus text message saying you have been fined for stepping outside during the coronavirus lockdown. The scam message claims to be from the Government, telling the recipient their movements have been monitored through their phone and they must pay a fine or face a more severe penalty. HMRC goodwill payment: police are warning of a fake message designed to steal your account details that reads ‘As part of the NHS promise to battle the COVID-19 virus, HMRC has issued a payment of £258 as a goodwill payment’. Telephone deception: older people have been contacted by fraudsters who pretend to be a relative currently being treated in hospital after contracting COVID-19. In some cases, the

fraudster will impersonate a doctor. Following this, the victims are asked to pay for the costs of the medical treatment urgently by transferring money or handing over cash or other valuables to “hospital representatives” in person. At all times, not just Covid-19, it is worth reminding ourselves of the following 5 golden rules to keep ourselves safe; 1. Never give a stranger your personal information or bank details, no matter who they claim to be. 2. Charities/and or authorities will never ask for bank details over the phone. 3. If someone visits you in person, always ask to see their ID & don’t feel bad about asking someone to leave if you don’t know them. 4. Never share any account log in details with people i.e., usernames or passwords. 5. Don’t rush into anything, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Going back in time

Hello Sewers, We are back with another In Stitches. The pandemic has a lot of us sitting at home binge watching Netflix and thanks to the new show, Bridgerton, one of my favourite eras for clothes trends is back in style. The 1800s drama has inspired empire waistlines, floaty dresses and chimney pot necklines on mens shirts. As you’ll know the famous Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth, was filmed just over 25 years ago at our very own Lyme Hall in Disley and also featured in 1813 with distinctly similar fashion. If you are a social media user, you may have seen people fashioning themselves with 1800s inspired looks if it’s with fabric or corsets. If you fancy making yourself a dress, I have found a beautiful pattern by Butterick 6074. For you Bridgerton fans, make sure you use polysatin, brocades, organzas and chiffons to match the Austen style. To make the pattern suit your modern everyday life, I suggest you make the dress shorter to your desired length. These dresses are going to look lovely in the Spring sun that will be with us soon I’m sure. With an increase in men sewing, gentlemen may enjoy making the pattern Butterick b2767, an 1813 inspired suit with waistcoat and trousers. I will be sewing these patterns on YouTube so make sure to follow me @Abis Den. Some of you know that I repair sewing machines. Recently, I have been receiving some

that have been neglected of a clean and an oil. I have had friends let me know that they have paid an arm and a leg to a machine repairer who ended up just cleaning away the loose threads and lint in the bobbin area. If you are hearing your machine making a clunking noise I suggest, before you take it to a professional, using the brush that comes along with the machine to clean the affected areas. Try removing the needle plate and cleaning there. Don’t use anything but sewing machine oil, other oils could damage the machine and it could end up in a terrible state. Staying at home this Summer has created a great opportunity to make for a Summer Staycation. This Spring I will be making things for the garden like table settings, outdoor cushions, bunting and peg bags. For the children, garden tepees and beanbags. And for the animals, a fabric bird feeder and an outdoor doggy bed. Let’s make sure we stay safe this Summer but also have lots of fun. LIVING WELL WITH DEMENTIA

dementia diagnosis can be a life-changing moment, and while it’s normal to feel worried and a little lost, it’s also possible, now more than ever, to live well with dementia. Increasingly in the media we hear of famous people being diagnosed with dementia - Barbara Windsor, Tony Bennett, Robin Williams, to name but a few. It’s a condition that’s in the spotlight: every four minutes, someone receives a dementia diagnosis, but as awareness grows, so too does the possibility of living a fulfilled life. Often, small changes can make a big difference. There is life after diagnosis. Here’s how you can continue to live well with dementia.

Seek out support There’s so much support available now in different forms. Websites like Dementia Tip Share is a hub of advice created by people with dementia, for people with dementia, while dementia daycare centres are great places for fun and friendship in the community. The Greater Moments app is another support tool, capturing positive moments and providing realtime feedback on the experiences of people with dementia to help make activities in the community more visible, accessible and friendly.

Technology can help with safety and security around the house, too - installing door sensors, video doorbells and other types of assistive technology offers a level of reassurance for people living with dementia and their carers. Live well Eating healthily and taking regular exercise is as important as ever, but so is maintaining social interaction and normal routines. Spending time with family and friends, enjoying celebrations and getting out and about in the community can help people with dementia maintain their independence for longer. Enjoying hobbies and familiar music is also great for creating feelings of empowerment and individuality, and helping boost mood. Butternut squash pasta

y veg box has given me quite a few squash over the last few weeks and I have been looking into different ways of serving it. Don’t get me wrong – I’m very grateful as I love squash, sweet, starchy and beautifully vivid. This recipe is an adaptation from Ottolenghi and is great for sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday night watching whatever takes your fancy. Serves 2 1 butternut squash 1 onion Olive oil 6 garlic cloves sliced 200g pasta – I’ve used macaroni or fusilli 500g natural Greek yoghurt 11/2 tsp ground cumin 2 egg yolks 11/2 cornflour Handful of flat leaf parsley chopped Tub of chilli/tomato salsa Preheat the oven to 230c fan De seed the squash and chop into inch sized cubes (I tend to leave the skin on because I find it fiddly to remove and I like the taste- peel it if you wish). Peel and cut the onion into wedges. Put the squash, onion, 3 tbsps of oil and some salt and pepper into a roasting tray and mix around to combine. Put the tray into the hot oven and roast for around 30 minutes, tossing once or twice, unti all charred and lovely. Keep warm until later.

Meanwhile put the garlic and 2 tbsps oil into a small pan and fry very gently until golden – this will take about 15 minutes. Don’t let it burn as it will taste bitter. Once golden and crispy transfer to a kitchen paper lined bowl using a slotted spoon and save the oil. Cook the pasta in boiling salted (lots of salt) water until it is al dente. The packet will tell you how long depending on what pasta you are using. Use a cup to scoop out 200ml of the pasta water then drain the pasta. While the pasta is cooking put the eggs, yoghurt, 1 tbspn oil, cumin and cornflour into a blender and blitz. Pour the mixture into a large pan and cook on a medium heat until just beginning to bubble and thicken. Add the pasta, some reserved pasta water, most of the parsley and the squash mixture. Cook for another 5 mins and then tip onto a serving platter and top with the parsley, a few spoons of the salsa, fried garlic and the reserved garlic oil. Sit back, tuck in and enjoy the telly!

‘POST PANDEMIC GRATITUDE’

- Finding Light in the Darkness

his is it, the place where I spend most of my time now...and to be honest, it does feel ‘normal’ after so long. Despite not getting out much, I actually absolutely love my online work (as a coach, hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner), and going online has meant that I have seen far more people from much farther afield. This has been great of course, but I can’t help looking forward to seeing many more people face to face in the not to distant future... I have really missed that. Thankfully, due to my accreditations with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council and the British Institute of Hypnotherapy, I am still able to practice (COVID secure) face to face sessions, but generally most things are still online. The accidental legacy of this pandemic for my business is definitely going to be the easier long term maintenance of my clients who would have had to take a flight to see me in the past, such as those in New York or Ireland and I’ll also do more online work on my business including meditation recordings and bespoke hypnosis recordings for clients. The reason I am writing about all this, is that these are all significant positive developments, accelerated by the necessity imposed by the pandemic. I wouldn’t exactly call it a silver lining, but it’s something to be grateful for and proud of in a generally rough year and it will certainly be of benefit to me in future. Now, I’m not suggesting for a moment that anyone ’should’ have developed or worked on some sort of ‘side-hustle’ (just typing those words makes me shudder) or personal project

during these overwhelming times, but, as an eternal optimist, I certainly hope that there might be at least something that each of us could find to be grateful for, and maybe much more than that. I completely understand that for many people, now hardly seems the right time to focus on gratitude (and I am no advocate of ‘toxic positivity’, trust me) however, if you do feel that way, then maybe just the act of trying to find some light in the darkness could help to pull you out of it. It is certainly worth a try. So, that’s my little PPG (Post Pandemic Gratitude - not sure that’ll catch on) story, well, for my business anyway. I know the pandemic isn’t quite done with yet, but I truly hope the worst is over. It would be great if people could email me (rob@ robert-brennan.com) something positive that has happened to them or developed in the last 12 months, something to be grateful or proud of, or something that radiates hope. It can be about anything at all, I’d love to hear about it. I will compile everything that I am sent into a blog on my website and I’ll also send it to SK magazines to see if they fancy printing it in here; a hopefully fantastic and uplifting set of good news and inspiration at a time when we need it most. Perhaps in this way, we can use grateful reflection to build some positive momentum in moving past this shocker of a 12 months with somewhat of a spring in our step. Okay, maybe not a spring, but perhaps some form of movement more vigorous than a shuffle. Stay safe and well

BRAMHALL & WOODFORD ROTARY CLUB CHANGING LIVES WITH LOANS

ramhall & Woodford Rotary are celebrating a landmark charitable achievement as one of hundreds of Rotary clubs from across the country to contribute over £1 million to Lendwithcare, a microfinance charity which enables people in the UK to make small loans to entrepreneurs from poor communities around the world. Since it started in Scotland in October 2011, Rotary clubs across the UK have been raising funds to make small loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries. These loans, from as little as £15, have enabled them to start or expand their small businesses and work their way out of poverty, feed their families and send their children to school. Farmers, tailors, market stallholders and food producers are just a few of the types of businesses which are benefitting from this initiative. Since joining Lendwithcare in 2016, BWRotary have raised funds through public donations during our various activities such as the annual Duck Race and Family Fun Day and lent a total of £4,843 to 68 entrepreneurs in 11 countries across Africa, Asia and South America. Loans will typically be paid back over 6-12 months. The Club have assisted entrepreneurs such as Alphonsine Twizerimana from Rwanda who used her loan to buy a hectare of land to grow bananas and supplement her other farming activity of growing Irish potatoes. International Chairman Ari Tsalikis said “Rotary Club of Bramhall & Woodford are proud to be a part of this fantastic initiative. Lendwithcare is a great way to help people out of poverty. You see exactly who the money is going to, and what they will use it for. The entrepreneur uses the

funds to help them to earn a living, often employing family members and neighbours as well, helping to lift their communities out of poverty. They pay the loans back, which can be re-lent to person after person.” Ari continued: “Rotary Club of Bramhall & Woodford has a proud history of fundraising for charitable causes through community events, and Lendwithcare is a fantastic cause, very popular with our members. And the money will keep being re-lent and re-lent, translating into many thousands of pounds worth of loans over the coming years.” Head of Lendwithcare, Tracey Horner, added: “Through Lendwithcare, Rotary have helped change the lives of more than 5,000 entrepreneurs around the world so far. Challenges of online exercise - How to keep fit without creating new problems!

he Covid phase has brought about changes in people’s attitude to exercise and altered how we keep fit. Much of this has been very positive, people have spent more time outside, walking/cycling/ running and families have also exercised together, providing a great combination of more fresh air and sunshine, increased levels of fitness and more family interaction. People have also been more interested in home exercise options, often buying gym equipment for home or trying online exercise classes. My patients have often used the opportunity to sample yoga, pilates, Zumba, HIIT or many other things they had never had time to do. Again, this has all been hugely positive. The obvious negatives have come about if people have decided to start with advanced options and ended up overdoing it! However, we have also found a number of patients coming in with spinal issues, most commonly the neck area where we have traced it back to trying to watch the instructor on an ipad or phone placed at a difficult angle whilst in an unfamiliar posture/exercise position. It is well worth looking at your “exercise station” set up, just as people have now realised their “home work station” set up is very important in helping avoid neck/shoulder/low back issues.

Things worth considering are: n If possible, use a large screen/TV to watch the class on, so it is easy to see from all angles. If not, placing your ipad on a chair so it’s level is much better. n Use an exercise mat so your spine or pelvis are more comfortable when doing floor exercises. n Start with a beginners version if you’ve never done the class before. It’s also useful to watch the video first, so you can carry out the exercise just by listening to the instructor. n Choose a quiet space with as much room around you as possible, it’s easier to concentrate, relax and helps to avoid hitting any objects! n Most of all, enjoy the opportunity to experiment and experience different activities. It keeps your mind challenged, relaxes and strengthens your body and may give you inspiration for a group class to try once we get back to some normality. Enjoy!
