What's On - October Thursday 3 October: Words Aloud – A Reading Group with a Difference 2.30pm-4pm. If you enjoy listening to stories, this is the reading group for you. From 3rd October, local author Lynn Knight will lead a reading group as part of the Royal Literary Fund’s ‘Reading Round’ scheme. This writer-led group will require no homework. Lynn will bring copies of two short texts – mostly stories and poems – from a wide range of writers, read them aloud and then lead the group in discussion.

Join professional chef Suzanne James for a scone making masterclasses in her private cookery school at fifty seven, 57 North Cross Road, SE22. You will learn to make the most delightful scones in this hands-on class as Suzanne will be demonstrating her tried and tested scone recipe which you will then cook yourselves. Her chefs will be on hand to help you throughout! At the end of the class attendees will sit down together with a pot of tea and the debate can commence…..jam or cream first!

The class will run for approx. 1 hour 30 minutes including exclusive dining time with Suzanne.

Sunday 6 October: West Norwood Feast Community Market 10am-4pm. West Norwood Feast is a community event built around 100 market stalls over five sites along the high street. It is run almost entirely by local volunteers who book the stalls and organise a full programme of free children’s activities and live entertainment. It is a farmer’s market, a craft fair, a flea market and a street food hub all rolled into one, yet the goal has always been to provide an experience that was wider than that. westnorwoodfeast.com 16 SE23 - October 2019 | 11

Get Into Dahlias Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

D

ahlias are back in fashion in a big way, sales are up and there are thousands of posts of these dramatic beauties on Instagram. Once only grown on the allotments or in a dahlia bed for flower shows and flower arranging, they’re now being used mingled amongst perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubs in borders. The darker, richer colours look great in tropical schemes, working well with lush large-leaved plants.

Dahlias come in an enormous array of colours from deep velvety purples to pale peach and corals, as well as hot and pastel pinks, whites, creams, yellows and reds (just no blue). There is also a huge range of forms from spiky cactus and anemones, simple single-flowers and stars, pom poms and massive dinner plate varieties. They can be very tall or for smaller gardens, dwarf varieties are ideal.

In terms of care, tubers are traditionally dug up in autumn, dried off and stored over winter to be planted out in spring. But you can leave them in the ground, mulched thickly, especially in London if your soil doesn’t get too wet. You’ll also need to protect them from slugs. Encourage side shoots by pinching out the top and feed every three weeks with tomato fertiliser. If you keep deadheading them, they’ll give you fantastic colourful blooms right through autumn when everything else is fading. Some of my favourites:

Dahlia ‘Walzing Matilda’ This is a pretty fiery coral dahlia with relaxed slightly twisted petals, which contrast beautifully with its dark purple brown stems and foliage. It’s lovely with ornamental grasses such as golden deschampsia or miscanthus. D. ‘Labyrinth’ is another peachy pink dahlia, but more lavish and romantic.

Dahlia ‘Eveline’ A lovely white variety with large blousy creamywhite flowers with pink petal tips. For a more delicate white dahlia try ‘Honka Fragile’ with delicate, striking star-shaped petals also edged with pink – it can keep flowering until November if it’s deadheaded.

Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’ A large cactus variety with dark burgundy flowers this’s great for adding almost black accents in a border. The double D. ‘Arabian Night’ also has dark burgundy velvety flowers and works well with golden grasses and pinks.

Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ An iconic single with crimson flowers, a yellow eye and dark purple foliage. Others in the Bishop Series include D. ‘Bishop of Canterbury’ with deep pink flowers, a golden eye and dark foliage. As well a simplicity that’s easy to incorporate into planting schemes, singles are also great for attracting pollinators.

Dahlia ‘Café au Lait Royal’ The vast dinner plate flowers of this are an ediblelooking milky coffee colour with hints of dusky pink – gorgeous! Another whopper is D. ‘Otto’s Thrill’ , glamorous and spectacular with luminous pink fully double blooms. It looks great amongst verbena bonariensis.

Dahlia 'Zundert Mystery Fox' A neat ball-shaped orange dahlia – fab as a cut flower with looser- looking dahlias. D. ‘Wizard of Oz’ is a super-pink pom pom that looks lovely toned down with cool blues and whites.

Roasted Chestnut & Mushroom Pate Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

C

hestnuts are now in season, don’t wait for December, they are good enough to eat now. They are a great source of vitamin C as well as vitamins B1, B2, and B6 and folic acid. Choose firm, shiny chestnuts to create this delicious recipe. This recipe makes a big bowl of pate, which will keep in the fridge for 3 days.

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 medium parsnip, peeled & diced 2 tbsps olive oil 250g cooked chestnuts, chopped 250g chestnut mushrooms, sliced 150g shitake or wild mushrooms, sliced 25g butter (optional) 2 tbsps brandy 1 tbsp lemon juice handful of flat parsley, chopped freshly ground black pepper sea salt

Method Pre-heat the oven to 200C/Gas Mark6.

Roast the parsnip in 1 tablespoon of olive oil for 20 minutes, until soft and beginning to colour. In a large frying pan, fry the onion in 1 tablespoon of olive oil, until soft, but not browned. Add the garlic and fry for a minute.

Add the shitake or wild mushrooms and fry for another minute, then add the chestnut mushrooms and fry until the mushrooms are all an even dark colour.

Stir in the cooked parsnips, chestnuts, butter, brandy and lemon juice.

Gently fry for 5 minutes, stirring a couple of times.

Leave to cool and then puree in a food processor to a chunky consistency.

Season to taste and add the parsley just before serving.

Serve with rye bread, wholegrain or melba toast.

Preparing your pet for fireworks season Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

E

very year pet owners of dogs, cats and other small animals will be forced to seek help because their animal has been traumatised by exposure to firework noise. Use of the word trauma may seem excessive but in my work I see animals that suffer debilitating noise phobia, sometimes after only one exposure to very loud fireworks or thunder noise. The saddest part is that fear of loud noises can generalise very quickly to anything that vaguely reminds the animal of the first scary event. These pets go on to require medication and extensive behaviour treatment. The animals suffer greatly and some harm themselves or run away in efforts to escape the noise.

The key issue is predictability. Forethought and widespread communication by licensed organisers of fireworks events enables pet owners to prepare well in advance- the Blue Cross advises owners of young animals and older animals with a known noise phobia to seek veterinary advice 6-12 weeks before firework season begins.

The greatest problem is the impromptu back garden fireworks show and, of course, irresponsible sale of fireworks. Neighbours should think carefully and find a way to alert the wider community if they are contemplating mounting a fireworks display outside the usual fireworks season.

Only a proportion of pets are genetically noise sensitive and many will never show the same panic response to noise in the way afflicted animals do. However, where young animals are concerned it is best to prepare well and assume the worst. It is not always clear which young animals go on to develop noise sensitivity.

Be warned, older animals can experience changes in hearing and sight and for the first time develop a panic response to a range of loud noises. Here is a quick and basic guide to preparing for fireworks season for any pet owner.

and 7am other than by licensed organisations; it is illegal for anyone under 18 to own or handle fireworks; unlicensed retailers can only sell fireworks from 15 October to 10 November and 26 to 31 December; it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to any domestic or captive animal.

• VET - visit your vet now and ensure you have their recommended calming products or medication to hand. ‘Thunder- shirts’ can help some dogs relax.

• MICROCHIP - ensure cats and dogs are microchipped so they can be identified if they bolt and escape during a fireworks episode.

• BEHAVIOURIST - if you know your animal has a major problem with noise seek qualified help 6 months or more before fireworks season. Seek guidance on noise desensitisation.

• DENS - provide dens and hiding places inside the home, with blankets and similar to block out noise.

• PET CURFEW - walk your dog in daylight. Keep all animals inside before dusk. Lock cat and dog flaps.

• SOUNDPROOFING THE HOME - before fireworks events shut curtains and blinds, turn houselights on, have the TV or radio on.

• STAY CALM - if your pet looks terrified you can cuddle or stroke them if they come to you but don’t pursue them to comfort them and don’t over soothe them as this can communicate to the animal that you are also scared. Allow your pet to hide, pace around or vocalise if they need to.

Try to normalise the situation. If your pet is only slightly concerned you can try distraction, play a favourite game, look happy! Do praise your pet if they are calm.

• EXTREME REACTIONS - if your pet has a first time extreme reaction - panting, shaking, drooling, howling, trying to escape, you need to see your vet and seek expert help as soon as possible. It is likely your pet will need medication.

Street Trees for Living Environment Matters with Stuart Checkley Street Trees for Living (STfL) is a local charity which works with residents and Lewisham Council to raise funds to pay for street trees and to care for them. In recent years we have raised over ÂŁ50,000 annually for trees and we have been able to plant more than 200 trees each year.

Street trees come to SE23 We planted our first tree in Forest Hill in the winter of 2017/8 and since then across SE23 we have planted more than 50.

Tree planting in our area is challenged by a steep and windy hill, by more than our fair share of London Clay and by a number of narrow pavements. Yet we have planted a range of small colourful trees which are now thriving. Modern varieties of Crab Apple such as those illustrated here are good examples of small trees with colourful flowers and fruit, which are of interest throughout the year. Surprisingly, many of these modern varieties are completely new to the streets of Forest Hill and Perry Vale.

Local communities become involved We work with volunteers who would like more trees on their street. They leaflet their street and identify others who would like more trees. We then meet groups of residents, and together decide the best way to use the available funds to benefit the street.

We submit our plans to the Council, who makes the final decision, and organises the planting of the trees. Local residents water the trees for the first two years and we conduct annual audits of all trees to ensure that they become established.

If a tree fails in the first two years the Council will replace it free of charge.

Specific projects This year we are working with TfL and Clean Air for SE23 to identify sites along the South Circular where trees could be planted at the roadside. We have found very few planting opportunities on the pavements but there are a number possibilities on green spaces at the roadside. TfL has agreed to fund these trees and Alice Tate-Harte (Clean Air for SE23) will be in touch with residents about this.

Next year STfL is planning to plant 100 trees in front of schools across the Borough. With Akwasi Duodu | akwasi@sterlingandlaw.com | www.sterlingandlaw.com When doing nothing becomes the most expensive option I was reading recently that women only save a third of the amount that men do by the time they approach retirement. This worrying statistic is primarily due to time taken out of their careers to look after a family but also due to the fact that there is a gender pay gap, with women earning around 18% less than men on average.

Childcare costs also fall disproportionately on women and the fact that women tend to live longer than men also makes it harder for them to build up a comfortable amount of savings to last them the rest of their lives. The Women’s Rights Organisation, The Fawcett Society has quoted that “The shocking pensions gap that women experience is a result of a lifetime of income and workplace inequality.”

An unfair system: Being less likely to take career breaks during their working life, men have an unfair advantage when it comes to saving for retirement. Typically, in a family setting, the woman would take a career break to look after the children, whilst the man soldiers on, building their pension fund without any gaps. The end result is a pensions gap which them puts the woman at a disadvantage and in a position where she could end up being reliant on her husband in retirement.

Amy from Dulwich says: “When I took a career break to have my children, I realised that I was falling behind in my pension contributions but had no idea what to do about it. In the end, with the myriad of things to consider in raising a young family, I stopped thinking about it. Let’s just say, life got in the way.”

One thing at a time: We all know that in order to build a retirement fund, one needs to start saving from as young an age as possible.

This is not always easy. Many come out of university in debt and concentrate first on clearing their student loans. Next comes finding a place to live; and with rent being so high, the natural next step of purchasing a house becomes a huge and all-encompassing challenge.

I came out of university with quite a lot of debt.

When I eventually got rid of that, my focus was on buying a house. Once I achieved that and had children, I had to put my own requirements on hold. Before I knew it I was in my forties and still hadn’t made any significant retirement provision.

I had no idea what to do about the problem. In those circumstances, the easiest thing to do is nothing” The solution: Having no idea how to fix a problem can be extremely disheartening and as Helen above says, doing nothing can easily become the default position. This is where financial advice comes in. This is where paying for an hour with a qualified financial adviser could be good investment Simply put, your adviser should be able to clearly explain to you where you are now and where you need to be. They should be able to put a plan in place to help you achieve your retirement goals; taking things into consideration like your career prospects, family commitments and budget.

As Amy says, life gets in the way and it’s easy to do nothing. Knowing that one needs to do something is perhaps one step. Knowing exactly what to do and doing it is quite another.

Step into this immersive exhibition in The Studio where all the artworks have a story to tell about design, techniques and time. Inspired by the history of the Horniman and its collections, Stages of Making is produced by a collective of local community members working with artist Katie Schwab. Works include painted walls, table tops made from yoghurt pots and a giant rag-rug created from used t-shirts by members of the public.
