Welcome It’s May and it is my favourite month of the year. Not just because it’s my birthday but because it is the return of the fabulous Dulwich Festival which is celebrating 25 years this year! There are so many amazing events to choose from you will definitely need to check out the full programme of events, with ticket details at www.dulwichfestival.co.uk. We have a preview of the Artists’ Open House on pages 18 & 19, including the brilliant Havelock Walk Open Studios. Make sure you pick up one of the booklets so you can plan your visits.

Along with the great programme of events there are the two fabulous fairs. The festival starts with the fantasic Festival Fair on Goose Green on the 13 May, ending with the lovely Dulwich Park Fair on the final Sunday (20).

The Last Word this month goes to Holly Russo a local Personal Trainer who specialises in pre/postnatal training. Holly is also an actress and a trainee stuntwoman! Find out more on page 36.

The view! I have the most spectacular view of London from the top of my street. Also I love that Forest Hill is in zone 3 so is nice and quick to get into Central London, but is also far enough away from the busy London life!

The one thing you couldn’t do without?

My trainers as I’m always jogging to a house or park to train a client…Who needs the gym to exercise right?!

The most famous person you’ve met?

I have worked on set with a few famous faces, although nothing can beat seeing Al Pacino on Broadway, watching him in The Godfather was one of the reasons why I got into acting in the first place.

Do you belong to any groups?

A Karate club on Dartmouth road, I have gone from a complete beginner to a brown belt and absolutely love it!

Where are you to be found on Saturday?

Working! Saturdays can be a very busy day for a personal trainer!

What is your favourite place to eat?

Franco Manca on Lordship Lane is always a great place for a cheeky post workout pizza!

Your favourite place to go for a drink?

The Capitol in Forest Hill is always a go to place for me and my friends for value for money and I love the fact it used to be a cinema.

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

The Horniman Gardens and Museum, I spent my childhood growing up in the gardens so have very fond memories, as well as having my 4th birthday party in the museum….Many years ago!

Holly Russo is a local Freelance Personal Trainer who specializes in pre/postnatal training. She trains her clients either in a local park or in their homes. She is also now venturing into the world of online training. Holly is also an actress and a trainee stuntwoman!

If money was no object…

I would devote my life to training for the stunt register to become the female Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jason Statham… They’re my action heroes!

How long have you lived in the area?

Most of my entire life! I have spent time living in Bristol when at university and I studied drama in New York, but I was born and raised a Forest Hill girl and always seem to come back to my roots!

Dulwich Park Bowls Club

We meet every afternoon from 1.30 pm until 5.30 pm from April until late September. Bowls provides some exercise and a degree of competition. We can lend bowls to those who do not have their own.

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

How to avoid gaining weight in your 40s

W

e tend to think that gaining weight is something that happens with ageing, but this isn’t the case. It is, however, really important to monitor your body composition as you get older, to avoid putting yourself at risk of things like diabetes and other types of metabolic conditions. Here are four things you can do to avoid gaining weight into your 40s.

1) Energy Balance Monitor Your Energy Balance. (Calories in versus calories burned from exercise). If you have less energy being expended, then you need to monitor and reduce the amount of energy that’s going into the body. Take a look at your food consumption and ensure that you’re not eating the diet that you were still eating when you were much more active. Also, try to include the following: More daily life movement: This could include taking the stairs not the escalator or walking 10,000 steps a day.

Moderate exercise: Combine more daily movement with moderate exercise three to five times a week e.g. a light jog or lots of brisk walking.

High intensity exercise: Ideally a couple of times a week; you want to get your heart rate up, get yourself out of breath where conversation would be tricky to have whilst you’re doing it.

2) Metabolism Your metabolism slows down as you get older, so it’s important, to review your diet. Specifically, eating fewer refined carbohydrates and processed foods, and increasing your intake of fruit and vegetables. Also monitor portion control, putting slightly less on your plate for less active days.

3) Stress Typically we tend to feel more stress as we get older, perhaps because we have mortgages, kids, more senior or stressful jobs, less leisure time, and we possibly have ageing parents and more dependants. An increase in stress produces more of the hormone cortisol, and can result in two 12 | SE23 - May 2018

things. It can cause us to overeat, and increased cortisol levels in the body can instruct the liver to release glucose. This in turn puts us in the state where we’ve got lots of glucose in the blood and that’s not a healthy thing.

Therefore, managing stress is important. You can do this through meditation and mindfulness, making sure you get the right amount of sleep and exercise (the appropriate type and intensity).

Also, prioritise ways of recovering after exercise and incorporating some relaxation; meditation is one example, along with reading.

Finally, particularly for women who are reading this, as women hit their 40s, they can potentially start to move into the perimenopausal stage. At this stage our oestrogen levels drop, which means that the body has a propensity towards storing fat, which could result in weight gain. Progesterone levels also dip, and that can cause bloating and water retention. Also, our insulin sensitivity increases which is why it’s so important to monitor diet as you could be in a state where you have high levels of insulin, which can cause weight gain.

Asparagus & Cheddar Tart Serves approximately: 4 People Preparation time: 30 Minutes Cooking time 30 Minutes There is only one thing on my mind at this time of year – English Asparagus. We are hoping the ‘Beast from the East’ hasn’t put things back too much – right now we are on track for the season to start on the 23rd April – Hurrah!

Ingredients Pastry • 140g Plain flour • 85g Butter Cubed • 100g Cheddar • Pinch Cayenne Pepper Filling • 5 eggs • 175ml Milk • 125g Cheddar • 25g Parmesan • 300g Asparagus • Truffle Oil (to finish)

Method 1) Put the flour in a bowl, add the butter to the flour and rub in with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the grated cheddar and Cayenne into the pastry and mix. Add 3 tbsp cold water and mix until the pastry forms a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill for 5 mins. Butter a 20 x 6cm deep loosebottom tart tin, or a 35 x 12cm rectangular tart tin.

2) Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Lightly dust the work surface with flour, roll out the pastry and line the tin. Chill in the freezer for 20 mins, then line the pastry case with baking paper, fill with beans and cook for 15 mins. Remove the beans and paper, then return the pastry case to the oven for 10 mins.

3) Crack the eggs into a jug, whisk, then add the milk and whisk again. Sprinkle half the grated cheese over the pastry case, then add the asparagus, egg mix and remaining cheese (if using a rectangular tin, you may not need all the mixture, so add it gradually). Bake in the lower half of the oven for 30-35 mins or until the egg mix is set. Drizzle with truffle oil before serving.

his year’s Dulwich Festival Artists’ Open House will take place over the weekends of 12-13 and 19-20 May, 11-6pm. Over 250 South London-based artists will open their homes and studios, giving the public an opportunity to view their work and talk to the makers about their creative processes.

This year's artists will represent a huge range of styles and disciplines, ranging from painting, photography and illustration to ceramics, jewellery, textiles and model dioramas, many in the intimate setting of their own homes and studios.

May Flowering Plants Gardens can often lack colour in late spring/ early summer when there’s lots of foliage but not enough flowers. Here’s my pick of ten of the best May flowering plants to fill the gap.

1) Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata ‘Black Barlow’ With delicate flowers on long stems, this dark plum variety is equally at home in cottage garden schemes or more contemporary settings with grasses and euphorbias. Aquilegias are short lived but self-seed easily creating a naturalistic feel and are happiest in moist soil in sun or dappled shade.

2) Iris ‘Jane Phillips’ Whether rich velvety purples or this delicate pale blue variety, bearded iris are a spectacular sight in May - and their grey/ blue strappy leaves add texture too. Plant them with the upper part of the rhizome on the soil surface in the sun so they can bake. Another option is the more delicate clump forming Iris sibiricas such as mid blue ‘Silver Edge’, which has narrower leaves and likes more moisture.

3) Papaver orientale ‘Patty’s Plum’ The paper-thin petals of this gorgeous pinky purple perennial poppy are fleeting, but are so beautiful it’s worth it. Plant in sun or part shade, with grasses or late flowerers such as penstemon to keep the interest going.

4) Paeonia ‘Early Windflower’ Like poppies, peonies make a short lived but lavish show. This early flowering variety has delicate single white blooms with a golden eye. Slightly later comes the more blowsy white P. lactiflora ‘Duchesse de Nemours’. Plant in sun or part shade depending on the variety, stake to avoid flopping and avoid planting too deeply.

5) Libertia chilensis More useful than showy, this has stylish evergreen sword like leaves and pure white flowers on long stems from May. Likes full sun or part shade.

6) Erysimum ‘Bowles’s Mauve’ The mauve flower spires on this perennial wallflower actually start in February and last into October, which along with its grey green evergreen leaves

make it hugely useful for smaller spaces. It’s happy in sun or part shade and contrasts well with zingy Euphorbia characias wulfenii.

7) Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ Alliums are the perfect late spring/early summer bulb and this popular variety has deep purple flowers on 90cm stems. It looks wonderful in drifts popping up through ornamental grasses, euphorbias, box balls or lavenders to hide the tatty foliage. Plant in autumn in full sun.

8) Anthemis tinctoria ‘Sauce Hollondaise’ This soft creamy yellow daisy is so pretty and perfectly complements blues and purples, cheering up the border in May to July. Likes full sun and well drained soil.

9) Erigeron karvinskianus A more low growing daisy with masses of tiny white flowers turning pink from May until October.

It thrives in well-drained soil, in sun or part shade where it’ll form lovely mounds at the front of a border or along paths – also good in pots.

10) Viburnum x burkwoodii This is a gorgeous shrub with heavenly clusters of pink buds opening to beautifully scented white flowers in April and May. Plant in full sun or part shade near a path or in the front garden to fully appreciate the perfume.

The Six Essentials of Wealth Planning he first step in good financial planning is to establish where you are now, where you want to be and what you need to do to get there taking into consideration what is important to you and your current financial means. Everyone is different. As we go through the various stages of our lives, different things become more important. There are however common threads which arguably, apply to almost everyone.

The simple basics of wealth planning are to accumulate when you can and protect what you have built. Accumulation means saving and protect means insuring. the two go hand in hand and are an essential part of financial planning.

and critical illness cover can be surprisingly affordable especially if taken out at a younger age and essential if you should ever be unfortunate enough to make a claim.

1) Protect Your Dependants

Try to imagine the lives of those who depend on you financially if you were no longer around. What financial problems would they have? Would they suffer? If they would, then it would be wise to provide them with a financial cushion on your death through a life insurance policy. The amount of cover and the price of it would depend on your age and the size of the financial hole you would like to plug. Getting it wrong could be expensive and many do. My advice? Seek advice.

Most people with large sums of money saved started by putting away something quite modest on a regular monthly basis. The best way to do this is to analyse your income and your expenditure.

If you have anything left at the end of the month, squirrel it away. The next step is determining where you put that money. With interest rates for savers being at an all-time low, other savings methods should be considered, especially if you are planning to save for 5 years or more. Seek advice.

2) Eliminate Your Debt By debt, I mean short term, non-mortgage debt, such as loans and credit cards. Trying to build a financial plan whilst in debt is a little like trying to build a castle on the sand. Any interest or growth you make on what you have saved will be cancelled out by the interest you are paying on what you have borrowed. Debt eliminated, you are ready to start.

3) Insure your valuables Most people understand the value of insurance when it comes to their home, their car and the items in their home. What is more important? Your car or your health? Which should you insure first, the valuables in your home or your ability to work?

4) Have A Long-Term Plan Your long-term plan, such as retirement planning, needs to be set and running as early as possible.

Circumstances allowing, it should be reviewed regularly, but remain intact for the duration. Here in the UK, we have amazing tax incentives to encourage you to save for your retirement, the longest holiday in your lifetime. This should take a considered and regularly reviewed strategic approach for best results.

6) Show The Taxman No Mercy HMRC is ruthless and efficient in obtaining taxes from you, but has been kind enough to offer you ways to shelter your wealth from tax. Many of us are too uninformed to take advantage of these tax shelters, even where HMRC has been generous.

This where a good financial adviser would be worth their weight in gold. Protecting your wealth against disaster and protecting your wealth against unnecessary tax are of equal importance.

Be ruthless in your approach.

Sunday 13 May: Music at the Festival Fair on Goose Green 11am-4pm. The Goose is again running the music stage at Dulwich Festival Fair on Goose Green!

Each set will be 45 minutes long, with DJed music during the changeover. Artists appearing (all local!) will be: 12 noon – Alex Seel. Alex Seel has a warm, rootsy song-writing style with subtle lyrics and a gift for acoustic guitar finger-picking.

1 pm – The Ben Holland Trio. Ben Holland is a singer-songwriter who has toured with Joan Armatrading all around the UK and Europe. Trio includes Babu on bass & Ben McClean on drums.

2pm – Louis vann Johnson and The Indi Souls.

The Indi Souls are led by charismatic guitarist and beatboxer Louis Vann Johnson. Their musical sounds fall in the genres of Pop, Rock and RnB. 3pm – John McClean and The Clan. Festival Fair favourites John McClean and the Clan play blistering live sets featuring John McClean‘s gritty and passionate vocals. They combine elements of Blues, Soul, Gospel and Rock into their own unique sound.

Wednesday 30 May: Work on Emmanuel Wildlife Garden, Chalford Road 2-4pm. Want to get down to Earth? Then get to Emmanuel wildlife garden, off Chalford Road, West Dulwich on the last Wednesday afternoon of every month. Norwood Wildlife Team created a garden on a patch between Emmanueel, a Parish Church, and their neighbours 12yrs ago and have recently returned it to its original purpose with the help of Church members.

The Last Word – Holly Russo What do you most value about the area?

The view! I have the most spectacular view of London from the top of my street. Also I love that Forest Hill is in zone 3 so is nice and quick to get into Central London, but is also far enough away from the busy London life!

The one thing you couldn’t do without?

My trainers as I’m always jogging to a house or park to train a client…Who needs the gym to exercise right?!

The most famous person you’ve met?

I have worked on set with a few famous faces, although nothing can beat seeing Al Pacino on Broadway, watching him in The Godfather was one of the reasons why I got into acting in the first place.

Do you belong to any groups?

A Karate club on Dartmouth road, I have gone from a complete beginner to a brown belt and absolutely love it!

Where are you to be found on Saturday?

Working! Saturdays can be a very busy day for a personal trainer!

What is your favourite place to eat?

Franco Manca on Lordship Lane is always a great place for a cheeky post workout pizza!

Your favourite place to go for a drink?

The Capitol in Forest Hill is always a go to place for me and my friends for value for money and I love the fact it used to be a cinema.

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

The Horniman Gardens and Museum, I spent my childhood growing up in the gardens so have very fond memories, as well as having my 4th birthday party in the museum….Many years ago!

Holly Russo is a local Freelance Personal Trainer who specialises in pre/postnatal training. She trains her clients either in a local park or in their homes. She is also now venturing into the world of online training. Holly is also an actress and a trainee stuntwoman!

If money was no object…

I would devote my life to training for the stunt register to become the female Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jason Statham… They’re my action heroes!

How long have you lived in the area?

Most of my entire life! I have spent time living in Bristol when at university and I studied drama in New York, but I was born and raised a Forest Hill girl and always seem to come back to my roots!
