Welcome to SE23 May turned out to be a great month, with some wonderful weather and fantastic events. I thoroughly enjoyed the Artists’ Open House weekends, part of the Dulwich Festival and purchased a couple of great prints. The Goose Green Fair was back with a bang and was packed all day long. I was particularly pleased to see it return as I started the original event back in 2006! The current organisers did a fantastic job. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. June is proving a popular month for events so we have seven pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. Please do check any event before turning up to make sure that they are still going ahead. Remember to check out www.arounddulwich.co.uk too. The Pub in the Park is back at Dulwich Park this monnth and I cannot wait to attend. Find out the full details on pages 10 & 11. The Last Word goes to Amelia Adrian is mother, Yoga teacher, Aromatherapist and Reiki practitioner. See page 32. I hope you enjoy the magazine this month, please feel free to let me know if you do. Until next time.

What's On - June Now until Wednesday 1 June: Charity supper club hosted in the iconic Brockwell Park

Brixton People’s Kitchen present Well-Seasoned, a supper club with a purpose hosted in the iconic Brockwell Park. As part of Brockwell Bounce, a three-day festival running from 30th May until 1st June, each consecutive night will feature a uniquely designed menu and live music. Well-Seasoned lines up three amazing female chefs: Masterchef quarter-finalist Yui Miles, the incredible Dine with Dina (Dina Macki) and soul food sorceress Safiya Robinson - founder of Sisterwoman Vegan. Well-Seasoned’s concept is about adding a little bit (or a lot) of spice to life and celebrating bold flavours and rich food heritages. Safiya Robinson, founder of Sisterwoman Vegan, a plant based social enterprise, takes over with her own unique take on dinner. All proceeds from Well-Seasoned will go towards funding Brixton People’s Kitchen. A social enterprise dedicated to providing as many people as possible with access to diverse, nutritious and affordable foods. Challenges have faced the organization over the last two years with the sharp increase in people struggling with the rising cost of food. Coupled with an unexpected eviction from their Lambeth premises last year. Proceeds from the supper club will fund a new community shop and café as well as crucial school holiday meal support services. Each supper club is priced at £55 per person which includes a two-course menu, drink and live music. Vegetarian, vegan and halal options are available. Menus and tickets can be found at: www.brixtonpeopleskitchen.com/wellseasoned-supper-club Brockwell Park, Brockwell Park Gardens, London SE24 0NG 6 | SE23 - June 2022

Thursdays 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 June: Dulwich Folk Dance Club-Thursday Dance 8pm - 10pm. When is the last time you had an evening out that was actually good for you? Dr Michael Mosely has been extolling the many virtues of dance on radio and TV. Good for both mind and body-and fun! It’s hard not to smile when you’re dancing. Experienced or not, partnered or single, young or not so young, you are invited to come country (aka folk) dancing at St Barnabas Parish Hall. Country dancing is a very inclusive form of dance and has been so for centuries. Even if you’re an inexperienced dancer, you can join in immediately and get the full benefit and joy of the event as all dances are first practised and then “called”. And there are many people to partner you and show you how it’s done, should you need it. A chance to meet new friends and have some fun. 2 June: Our caller tonight is Les Wallace. Les has a wealth of experience calling and finds some lovely and, often, unusual dances for us to dance to. 9 June: Tonight, we have a very special guest caller, Sibby. He is much in demand and comes a long way to call for us, so we feel very lucky. 16 June: We had such a lovely evening with Sue Hastings calling last month that we just had to have her back again, soon! And, although in demand from other Clubs, it is we who have her this evening! Hooray! 23 June: Our caller this evening is Jane Lowe. It seems that even the “Daily Telegraph” is interested in her activities as she featured on page 6, along with a sizeable photograph, fairly recently. But we love her calling and are very much looking forward to the evening. 30 June: This evening, we have someone calling who is dear to our hearts-Joyce Wood. She has been calling for a very long time and has a competent, gentle, measured style all her own. And lovely music and dances! ULEZ: Please note, the Club’s Hall lies within the south circular. ENQUIRIES: John Blase: 020 8693 2873 johnhblase@aol.com Wendy Newall: 07821 089861 wendy.marsh@hotmail.com. £5 (£4 Club Members). Pay at the Hall 18

In Praise of Hedges Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

H

edges create stylish boundaries but also help divide a garden into ‘rooms’, giving the space architectural structure. Hedge partitions also work well offset either side of a garden, create informal divisions, breaking up a long thin garden, for example, and creating a private nook for a seating area. And hedges are also useful for neatly screening compost bins or sheds. The crisp clean lines of a well pruned-hedge is also a perfect backdrop to softer, herbaceous planting. Even in the smallest garden, tucking a bench behind a small hedge will create a fun, private space to hide away for a quiet moment. There’s a wide range of plants that work as hedges. Here are a few to consider:

Evergreen Options - Yew creates a fabulous dark green hedge that can be tightly clipped. Portuguese laurel, griselinia and pittosporum varieties also work well.

12 | SE23 - June 2022

Deciduous Hedging - Native hornbeam and beech (copper beach is also lovely) are great if you want something that changes with the seasons from fresh spring leaves to autumn colour and finally brown foliage that’s often retained through winter Flowering Shrubs

- Escallonia, choisya, camellias, rosemary, roses such as Gallicas or even hydrangeas can be used as a hedging. Native hedging made of plants such as hawthorn and dog rose are full of colour and great for biodiversity.

Ornamental Grasses

- Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, miscanthus and pennisetum, make lovely hedges with movement and texture. These can be layered in front of an evergreen hedge to seasonal interest. Autumn and spring are good times for planting hedges, but now is a good time to do some advanced planning by noticing what hedging you like and what will work in your own garden.

Lobster Risotto Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

N

ative British Lobsters are caught off the coast between June & September, they are blue when live, and go bright red when you cook them. Billingsgate Fish Market in east London stocks some of the best lobster in the UK. You can pick up consistently fresh produce thanks to the daily catches from British coastal areas as there are 40plus merchants at the market the competition is keen which helps to keep prices low. The rule of thumb with lobsters is always to use top-quality produce, then keep your preparation as simple as possible – this will let the natural flavours come through and show your guests you really know your stuff. Serves 8-10 as a small course.

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

5 live 1-pound lobsters (can be pre-cooked) 8 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 large onions, finely diced sea salt & fresh ground black pepper 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 cups Arborio rice 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 cup dry white wine 8 cups lobster broth 3 tablespoons chopped parsley 2 teaspoons chopped thyme 2 tablespoons freshly cut chives 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest aioli or mayonnaise for garnish

Method In a large stock pot bring 2 gallons of heavily salted water to a rolling boil. Add the lobsters and boil for 10 minutes or until they turn bright red. Remove the lobsters and when cool enough to handle, remove the meat and coarsely chop. Reserve 8 cups of the boiling liquid and discard the rest. Add the lobster shells to the reserved water and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Strain the broth and then return to the pot over medium-low heat to be used in the risotto. You may have some broth left over which you can boil down into a lobster reduction and freeze for another use. 14 | SE23 - June 2022

Heat the butter in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add the onions and a generous pinch of sea salt and sauté until translucent (about 6 minutes). Add the olive oil, rice, garlic, and a bit more salt. Stir the rice until it is sizzling and wellcoated with the oil. Add the wine and keep stirring until it is reduced. Bear in mind that from this point it will take 20-30 minutes, or a bit longer if your rice is older). For a dinner party allow 40 minutes and the risotto can sit for 5-10 minutes if necessary. Adjust the heat to keep the broth at a brisk simmer; you should see little bubbles but nothing near a boil. Add 1 cup of the lobster broth (just enough to barely cover the rice) and stir frequently until the broth has almost been completely absorbed. Repeat the process of adding broth, stirring, and allowing the rice to absorb the liquid until the rice becomes a bit soupy and is a little al dente. Before serving, stir in the chopped lobster meat (reserve a little for garnish) and season the risotto with sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste. Garnish with the reserved lobster meat, herbs, lemon zest, and a dab of aioli or mayonnaise. Serve as soon as you can. Enjoy!

Hydration

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com

L

et’s talk about hydration this month’ article. And I don’t need to tell you how important it is to stay hydrated. We all know about the importance of movement and nutrition for health and yet one aspect – anecdotally speaking - that is still very often neglected is hydration. So, it is probably not unfair to say that most of us are not always at optimum hydration. Every system within the body needs water to function properly, from digestion to our energy levels. It is common for us to be a little dehydrated, but how can we tell? Of course, the colour of your pee will give you an idea. When we are dehydrated, our blood pressure drops, causing poor circulation and reduced blood flow to the brain. This means that your heart must work extra-hard to distribute oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, making you feel tired and sluggish.

3 Top Tips for Maintaining Hydration Luckily, this is an easy fix. The remedy? A simple glass of water! But what can we do to get more water into our day? Here are my three top tips on how to stay hydrated: First, water. Every morning, while I wait for my coffee to brew, I have a glass of water with a little bit of creatine powder in it for some extra energy. Naturally, your body will be dehydrated after seven to eight hours of sleep. Therefore, longer you leave it before your first glass of water, the longer it will take for your body to recover. Studies show that drinking water after waking up helps to cleanse the stomach of toxins and balance the lymphatic system, improving immune health. Little and often. Using a smaller glass of water encourages movement. Why? Because you have to get up and get moving in order to get more water. This is a great way to get in those movement snacks as you take a trip to the kitchen for a re-fill. People often mistake thirst for hunger, which can cause them to eat more than they need. Consistent water intake throughout the day will also help you to consume the right amount of food. Keep it coming. If you don’t have a reusable bottle for when you are on the go, it is time to 16 | SE23 - June 2022

treat yourself. Carrying around a flask or bottle will ensure you are never without water and have sufficient energy for optimum performance. Often, when we are busy, we tend to ignore or miss the signals from our bodies telling us that we are thirsty.

Not Only Skin Deep Being hydrated does not just affect your physical health and appearance. Simply drinking more water can have a huge impact on our quality of life as it boosts our energy and helps us to perform at a higher level. You may find that using alerts on your phone as a reminder helps you to drink as much water as possible to stay motivated throughout the day.

Five Ways to Prepare for Interest Rate Rises

I

don’t claim to be any sort of economist, but my logic works like this: Inflation usually rises when the economy overheats. This happens when people have more disposable income. Demand goes up and therefore prices go up. The Bank of England controls this buy using interest rates. Raising interest rates increases everyone’s expenditure, especially borrowers, which in turn reduces spending. With less spending and less demand, prices return to normal, the economy cools, and inflation falls. It seems quite different this time. Inflation isn’t rising because of an overheating economy. Inflation is rising because of a lack of supply. Oil, gas, wheat, food – you name it. Almost everything we need to live our day to day lives is scarce and therefore more expensive. Increasing interest rates, in my opinion, won’t bring prices down. It’ll only serve to rub more salt in the wound by making the cost-of-living crisis worse. How is increasing everyone’s borrowing costs going to help at a time when no one can afford anything? All we can do is hope the Bank of England knows what it’s doing. That’s out of our control. There are however things in your life that you can control and influence. Here are five. 1) If you have a mortgage, and your mortgage is on a variable rate, you may have received a letter from your lender notifying you that your monthly repayments will be going up. Those with a fixed rate on the other hand won’t be affected. With interest rates likely to go up even further, it may be worth contacting your lender or broker to arrange a fixed rate mortgage if you don’t fancy paying more. Best do this now while rates are still at reasonable levels. 2) If you have short term debt, this may be a good time to review your options. Credit card rates are usually high even when interest rates are low. Some credit card companies will take over your debt at zero percent interest for a period of times – sometimes several months. This is worth exploring and could give you the opportunity to clear your outstanding balance.

20 | SE23 - June 2022

3) If you have savings, you may be disappointed to find that the interest rate rises haven’t been passed onto your savings or deposit accounts. This seems quite unfair to me – borrowers suffer almost immediately whilst savers must wait to benefit from interest rate rises. Nonetheless, this could be a good time to review your savings options, especially for longer-term money. 4) If you’re nearing retirement, finally some good news! Annuity rates pay a guaranteed income for life or for a fixed term. Interest rate rises almost certainly lead to better annuity rates meaning a potentially higher income in retirement. Buying an annuity, however, may not be for everyone and is an important, one-off, irreversible decision. If you are nearing retirement and would like to know all your options, speak to your financial adviser. 5) If you’re a first-time buyer, it may be worth remembering that lower interest rates mean lower monthly mortgage repayments. This means more people can afford to buy house. The more people can afford to buy a house, the higher the demand, and therefore the higher the corresponding prices. House prices therefore tend to be higher when interest rates are low. The converse is also true, increasing interest rates could push down the value of houses. Don’t get excited - UK house prices have a mind of their own! If interest rates continue to rise, we may see an effect on the value of house prices but don’t count on it!

Thursday 9 June: Statues of Discord in Whitehall and Trafalgar Square

Wednesday 8 June: Rule, Nostalgia: A Backwards History of Britain by Hannah Rose Woods

7:30pm – 8:30pm. For more than five hundred years, British politicians, poets, novelists and social commentators have mourned the loss of older national identities, and called for a revival of simpler, better ways of life. Starting in the pandemic, where national rhetoric called on ‘blitz spirit’ and ‘keep calm and carry on’, Hannah guides us back in time through Margaret Thatcher’s call for a return to ‘Victorian values’ in the 1980s, to William Blake’s protest against the ‘dark satanic mills’ of the Industrial Revolution that were fast transforming England’s green and pleasant land, and more. In Rule, Nostalgia, cultural historian Hannah Rose Woods will separate the history from the fantasy, debunk dangerous and pervasive myths about Britain’s past and explore the ways in which nostalgia has historically been mobilised in Britain across the political spectrum, from the radical left to the nationalist right, for both good and ill. Tickets: Book & Ticket £25 (Includes a copy of Rule, Nostalgia. Book RRP £20) Standard Ticket £10. 8pm – 9pm: The Arts Society Dulwich lecture at JAGS Sixth Form Centre. Guests welcome, £10 at the door, no booking required. Should there be a column to Nelson in Trafalgar Square? A parliamentary committee in the 1840s said there shouldn’t, but their view was overridden. As more statues are removed, perhaps the succession of works on Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth has something to teach us. ulwich Hamlet closed their season before a tremendous crowd at Champion Hill who very much enjoyed a heartening hammering* of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire’s senior alliterative team (*2-1 and a bit squeaky at the end). The victory saw The Hamlet finish tenth in the National Conference South; a creditable enough performance across the season, but mildly disappointing given the heady heights the men’s team reached before Christmas (second no less). Lots to be cheerful about though. The home crowds have been consistently huge. And while this has tested the stadium’s facilities to the full, as well as the patience of some of The Rabble, the throng of thirsty fans has helped refill the club’s coffers after a projected period of penury across lockdown. The board, the staff, the Supporters Trust, and all those who work tirelessly to keep our local club thriving, deserve the freedom of Champion Hill for all they have done to steer the Sons of Edgar Kail through this testing period. Remember, not so long ago the Pink and Blues were exiled to Mitcham, a place where you’d struggle to buy a sourdough loaf. Solzhenitsyn himself would have struggled to do justice to the hardship suffered. Yet now Champion Hill is rocking again with average crowds the biggest in the league at over 2,700. And with the new stadium on the horizon, the future is looking pretty sound. Some big questions hang over the club, however. Will long-serving manager Gavin Rose want or be offered a new contract? Will player of the year, keeper Charlie Grainger, be head-hunted by a more senior club? And will the urinal under the Tommy Jover ever be unblocked? Only time will tell. Meanwhile Dulwich Hamlet women’s team had a decent season, finishing sixth in their league and falling just short of cup glory with losing to league champions and their North London nemesis Ashford in the Capital Senior Cup Final. While very much part of the club, the women’s team have developed a strong and unique culture of

their own, as well as a passionate and dedicated fanbase. Next season promises great things. So that it is it for the season. What are we all going to do? There’s the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to look forward to we suppose. And why not celebrate HMQ’s glorious reign by bedecking yourself in patriotic pink and blue, via the online Hamlet merch shop at www.dhst.org.uk. It is what she would want. See you in August and Up The Hamlet. SE23 - june 2022 | 27

Sunday 19 June: Noye’s Fludde 4pm – 6pm: An incredible tempest, a massive boat and an angry God take centre stage in this imaginative re-telling of the biblical story of Noah, his family, and their unlikely cargo of animals as they fight for survival for 40 long days and nights on the ark. Based on the fourteenth century Chester Miracle Play, Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde was conceived as a community opera, to be performed by children with one or two adult speaking parts. The work has become a firm favourite, combining the naïve sincerity and humanity of the medieval original with inventive musical material that is as accessible as it is joyful. What’s more, it’s tailormade to show off the array of talent in SE19! For this dramatic tour de force, Crystal Palace’s resident orchestra, the London Mozart Players, will be joined by 100 young singers and actors from local schools, the St John’s Hive choir and the Crystal Palace Recorder Group, plus local amateur string players, all bringing this epic story to life. St John’s Upper Norwood is the ideal venue for this piece – Britten intended it to be performed in a church rather than a theatre. Join us for this dramatic parable of courage and redemption, with its heart-warming rainbow ending that carries the promise of a new beginning. St John the Evangelist, 1 Sylvan Rd, SE19 2RX. Rather than a band per se, Jackdaw is home for songs written by Rob and Wayne Drury, and live performances include a varying combination of the musicians involved. Anglo-American and raised in London, James Riley followed his roots back to Nashville in 2015 for a short trip – which ended up becoming a 2-year odyssey. The Last Word – Amelia Adrian Do you belong to any groups? My favourite local group is Fitbirds Fitness. They run outdoor sessions in the local parks combining cardio, some yoga and basically all round good high vibe energy. Always super fun, and I always leave feeling better than when I arrived.

Describe your perfect weekend Gardening, cinema or home cinema, a walk in the local park, someone to cook me a roast and I’m happy :) Good conversation, some time to meditate. Simple pleasures as I get older seem to do the trick.

Your favourite place for a night out? I’m such a homebird so playing out is rare these days, but I do love films, so East Dulwich Picturehouse always feels welcoming and relaxing.

Where are you to be found on Saturday? In my garden, playing with the flowers! Amelia Adrian is Mother, Yoga teacher, Aromatherapist and Reiki practitioner living and practicing in Forest Hill. She loves to combine these disciplines in her offerings, specialising in practices of Aromayoga and Aroma infused Reiki Treatments. She is here as a teacher and practitioner to help you feel more relaxed, centred. calm and connected

What is your favourite place to eat?

How long have you lived in the area?

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

My whole life. I was born in Beckenham at Stone Park Maternity Hospital (we used to call it Beckenham baby factory! Not very P.C. I know). The area has now been converted in to a blocks of flats ! I grew up in Sydenham and then bought my first flat in Crystal Palace many years ago! I have lived in Forest Hill for the last 15 years as I have raised my own family.

I have a few. Dulwich Woods is a special place if you catch it at the right time of day. I love Horniman for the floral display in the gardens, it is so well cared for. And I do love Beckenham Place Park for a long walk and a broad horizon - it can sometimes feel like you are in the countryside there.

What has changed most during that time?

As an aromatherapist I’ve learnt how to self-soothe with natural plant medicines in the form of Essential Oils. I love teaching others how to use these Oils for their own relaxation too.

The coffee If you know where to go, you can now get the best Flat White in London.

What do you most value about the area? Without a doubt, my neighbours. I think knowing I could call on their door and they would be there to help in whatever way they could. Knowing that whatever small request such a missing ingredient for a recipe, to helping us with any family emergency. That is priceless.

We love The Begging Bowl in Peckham.

Coffee or tea? Neither… I have discovered the joys of drinking Cacao!! It’s important to find an ethical source. I go to Fly Kakao for mine. Calming and energising.

When I want to relax...

My secret ambition ... To witness the Northern Lights. I’m always interested in new experiences, and I know this would be so awesome and totally inspirational while reminding me of my small but special place in this wonderful Universe.

The one thing you couldn’t do without?

My perfect holiday...

My Yoga Practice - this keeps me sane and centred, no matter what turmoil is happening in the family, the community or the world at large.

A trip to Cornwall. We visit here regularly, and the land is so alive and inspiring. Just heaven if you get a sunny day on the beach.
