With pride in the roarsome efforts of England’s Lionesses generating a big spike of interest in women’s football, it is a good time indeed to acquaint yourselves with our very own rampant team of galácticas - Dulwich Hamlet Women. The Hamlet play in the London and South East Women’s premier league, alongside clubs such as Fulham, Millwall and Sutton. And with some new players joining old favourites in this year’s team hopes are high among the loyal band of supporters that the the Pink and Blues can improve on last year’s mid-table finish. Home matches are played at Champion Hill, usually on a Sunday at 2pm, and tickets are £4 adults, £2 concessions with young people under thirteen getting in free. Crowds are smaller than the men’s team, but with an average attendance of between around 300, the atmosphere is as rocking as it is friendly. September gives you two opportunities to see the Daughters of Edgar Kail play at home: Sutton on the 4th and Millwall on the 25th. Try it, you’ll like it; though the football is spicy. Meanwhile, the sons of Edgar Kail are well into their league fixtures, showing some early season promise. The first game of the season saw East Dulwich’s finest take on Braintree Town, winning 2-1 under the searing summer sun in front of a big broiler of a crowd with the late winner from coming from new boy Jayden Clarke. September will see a couple of home games for The Hamlet: 10 September against Weymouth and then a few days later the rare pleasure of an under the lights mid-week game against Hemel Hempstead Town. Sweet. Now, do you know someone who would like to walk out with the teams at Champion Hill? Well the Hamlet are always on the look out for children or groups of children to walk out with the women’s and men’s teams. And it’s completely free. All you have to do is take a look at upcoming fixtures and choose the game you’re interested in. So whether you’re an individual, school, football team or community group, email community@ dulwichhamletfc.co.uk with the child’s or children’s full name, age and preferred fixture or fixtures. Finally you can keep an eye on news, views and highlight clips via the club’s website at:

And the new pink and blue Battenberg beauty of a kit is now available to buy either at the stadium or via the Supporters Trust’s site - www.dhst.org.uk. Until Tuscany, il solo e unico.

Beans, Beans - Dana Chapman

Beans, beans make you….. HAPPY?
Beans may have a bad rap because of the undesired effects (gas/ bloating). But they also have health promoting benefits such as being good for heart health, blood sugar balance, and digestion. Beans come in many forms – I’m talking chickpeas, lentils (red, brown, beluga), baked beans, kidney, black, lima, haricot, pinto and cannellini beans and more. All beans have a similar nutrient profile being good sources of vitamins and mineral that are all needed to support mental health: 1) they contain nutrients necessary for creating our happy hormones; and 2) they promote good gut health
Beans contain building blocks for happy hormones
So how do beans help promote gut health?
Mainly through their high fibre and polyphenol content. Fibre and polyphenols are essential for feeding our gut microbiome. The gut microbiome is responsible for making 95% of serotonin found in the body, for creating some of our B vitamins, digesting our food, and sending “all is well” signals to the body and the immune system. There are many different strains of bacteria in the gut, but they all need to live and work in symphony to provide health benefits for their host, you! Both fibre and polyphenols are necessary to help provide this symphony.
Here are some ways to incorporate beans in your diet.
• Keep tinned beans and lentils in the cupboard and add half a tin to your lunch salad or dinner bolognaise. • Switch your normal pasta for red lentil or chickpea pasta • Add hummus to your weekly grocery list or make your own. If you’d like to know more, sign up to my newsletter and get a copy of my “Foods to eat and foods to avoid for mental health”. I’m also running a local in person workshop. Scan the QR code for more details.
Beans are a good source of protein. Protein is mainly known for its role as building blocks for our muscles and tissues. A less known fact is that protein is also a necessary building block for the hormones (serotonin and dopamine) that make us feel happy and content. Beans also contain nutrients such as B vitamins, magnesium, iron, zinc, and selenium. These nutrients orchestrate the conversion of protein into our happy hormones. So, if we don’t get these nutrients through our diet – we simply won’t have the raw materials to create these feel-good hormones.
Beans, gut health & mental health
We’ve all heard how important gut health is, and that extends to it being important for our mental health. This is mainly due to a two-way signalling pathway - the gut-brain-axis. The relationship between mental health and the gut is illustrated by those who suffer from both irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and anxiety (44%) and IBS and depression (84%).
