“The Chair Sanctuary has been advertising in SE Magazines for over a decade and it’s proved to be such a good decision for us as the magazines are so widely read and trusted by our clients. Angela is a great advocate for local businesses and her advice has helped us expand the reach of our upholstery and furniture renovation services. It’s great to feel so linked into the local community which Angela really helps drive. We can’t recommend Angela and SE Magazines highly enough!” Karen Wood and Kathy Daniel, www.thechairsanctuary.co.uk “I have advertised with SE magazines for several years now, previously to promote my former business which grew and became very successful in the local area and also now to launch my new business. These great local magazines are the best for attracting new business and also act as a gentle reminder to existing clients. I would highly recommend advertising in them!” Becca Teers, Author, Therapist, Trainer, Speaker www.healthy-habits.me www.unlimited-book.com

Welcome to SE22 I am hoping that when the magazine comes out we are enjoying some sunshine after a rather wet June. Mums against plastic baby-wipes is a local group of mums who are protesting against plastic baby-wipes. Find out more on page 24. As always SE22 is full of fabulous pages of local events, starting on page 8, with plenty to keep you busy this month. SE22 is the only place to find out what is happening in the area. If you are running an event in the area, please do e-mail details through for a free listing. SE22 relies on all our lovely, local advertisers to be able to produce this magazine, so if you do give them a call or drop them an e-mail, please do say where you heard about them.

Until next time.

Holiday-Proof Your Garden Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

I

t’s depressing coming home to a neglected garden. But a few simple jobs before you go away will help your garden survive for a few weeks without you. Here are 10 things to do before you head off on your travels. 1) Move your pots to semi-shade, grouping them together to increase shade and humidity. Put them on saucers to catch rainwater or on soaked capillary matting. (But check the forecast, as plants don’t like to be in standing water.) Or consider installing an irrigation system. Any favourite plants that easily dry out can be sunk into soil to keep them cool, drenching the surrounding earth and giving it a mulch. 2) As well as deadheading repeat flowering plants like cosmos, think ahead by removing the flowers as well – or pick a bunch of flowers to give to friends and neighbours. 3) To avoid coming back to a weedy mess, it’s really worth removing as many weeds as you can before you go away, digging out the whole root of perennial weeds such as thistle and bindweed. 4) Mulching your borders with bulky organic matter such as compost, well-rotted manure or bark will keep weeds down and moisture in – make sure you drench the soil first. Or just concentrate on newly planted or thirsty shrubs and perennials and don’t worry so much about drought tolerant ones like iris, lavender and rosemary. 5) If you go away at lot think about growing more drought tolerant plants. As a rule grey/ silver plants like Stachys byzantina, small leaved herbs or fleshy leaved plants such as sedum will survive without much water once they’re established. 6) If the forecast is for lots of rain, remember to protect plants like hostas from slugs – try organic wool slug pellets or try making beer traps by sinking a jar of beer into the soil. Clearing dead foliage will also help remove places for slugs and snails to hide. 7) Check that the stakes on tall perennials are secure – wind and rain can easily knock them over and damage surrounding plants too.

12 | SE22 - July 2019

Photo by Erda Estremera on Unsplash

8) Pick as many peas and beans as you can, blanching and freezing anything you can’t eat. Raspberries and currants can also be frozen. And pick all courgettes even very small ones, which are particularly tasty, to avoid coming back to marrows. Remove weed seedlings with a hoe or by hand, especially anything close to plants. Water thoroughly before you go but ideally persuade a friend to come and help. 9) Edge your lawn to neaten it up and clear areas where slugs might lurk. Mow the lawn a few days before you leave but don’t cut it too short if the weather is going to be hot and dry – long grass copes much better with drought than short grass. 10) As with outdoor containers, it’s worth moving houseplants to a shady spot while you’re away, watering them thoroughly first. Anything particularly thirsty or in smaller pots will benefit from sitting on a damp cloth or in a sink or bath.

Summer Pudding Loaf Recipes from Suzanne James

B

link and you will have missed the first half of 2019 like I have. Where on earth did January to June go? Here we are in July, the height of the summer and at last the time when we all can enjoy the very best of the summer berries. Personally, I like nothing better than a classic Summer Pudding but rather than bread, I do prefer to make it with slices of brioche for that extra richness. There are many recipes available on line however, my own is simply divine and very quick too. One must have a regular tin of beans to hand to weigh it down but apart from that rather out of sorts ingredient, the rest is as follows.

Ingredients Serves: 6. Prep Time: Overnight Cook Time: 10 minutes or less • An 850ml pudding basin • 1 large brioche loaf • 250g English strawberries, stalk removed and cut into quarters • 250g English raspberries • 250g English blueberries • 250g English blackberries • 100g English redcurrants + homemade raspberry coulis: • 500g frozen raspberries • 50g icing sugar • 100ml water

Method 1) Put the coulis ingredients in a saucepan, bring to the boil, remove from the heat and then either blitz with a hand blender / magi mix or press through a sieve with the back of a spoon! Voila, raspberry coulis!! 2) Put half of the coulis aside for the fruit and use half for the bread. 3) Line the pudding basin with clingfilm, so that a little bit is overhanging. 4) Cut the Brioche loaf into slices of about 5mm thick and carefully and dip one side into the coulis (retain a few slices without dipping for topping off the pudding). Place the dipped slices into the bowl, with the red side facing the glass and repeat until the whole bowl is lined. 14 | SE22 - July 2019

5) Now take your remaining coulis mix and fold the fruit into it until it is fully covered. You don’t want the mixture to be too wet, so it’s best not to add all the coulis at once, but a little at a time until you have a firm but wet mix. Pour the mixture on to the bread in the bowl right up to the top. 6) Place the last few slices of bread over the fruit mix until all the fruit is covered. 7) Place a sheet of parchment paper on top of the bread, then a plate that fits perfectly inside the bowl. Now place the tin of beans on top to weight the bread down. Place in a fridge for up to 24 hours to allow the bread and fruit to set. 8) To serve, remove the beans, the plate and the parchment sheet. Carefully holding a plate over the dish, flip it over and with a slurp the summer pudding should free itself from its dish prison! 9) All you need to do now is cut and serve with a good glug of cream on the side!

In Season this month Fruits & Nuts - Apples, Apricot, Aubergine, Blackberries, Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Loganberries, Peaches, Plums, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Strawberries, White currants, Cobnuts, Hazelnuts Vegetables & Herbs - Artichokes, Aubergines, Beetroot, Broccoli, Cabbages, Carrots, Cauliflower, Chard, Courgettes, Cucumber, Fennel, French Beans, Garlic, Kohlrabi, Lamb’s Lettuce, Onions, Pak Choi, Peas (inc. Sugar Snaps) Potatoes, Radishes, Rocket, Runner Beans, Salsify, Scorzonera, Samphire, Sorrel, Spinach, Sweetcorn, Tomatoes, Watercress Meat & Game - Lamb, Rabbit, Venison, Wood Pigeon Fish & Shellfish - Black Bream, Crab (brown, hen & Spider), Signal Crayfish, Grey Mullet, Lobster, Mackerel, Pollack, Prawns, Scallops, Sea Bass, Squid, Trout (river – brown & rainbow) Going out of season - Blackberries, Blueberries, Cherry, Mangetout, Peach, Redcurrant, Strawberries (many of these towards the end of the month)

How T0 Lower Your Blood Your Pressure

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com I’m Worried My Blood Pressure Is Too High, How Can I Lower It? Are you worried about your blood pressure and not sure how you can lower it? Maybe your doctor has told you that you have high blood pressure, or maybe you keep a track with a kit and you do your own blood pressure testing and it’s a little bit higher than you’d like it to be. There are lots and lots of things you can do to lower your blood pressure. Popular belief has had us believe that salt intake is linked with hypertension – which has been dismissed slightly now. It’s not a bad idea to have a look at the salt content in your food. Often, if you’re consuming a lot of salt, it’s because you’re eating refined and processed foods – and we know that’s not healthy for us. The best drug-free brilliant remedy for high blood pressure is exercise but ensuring the appropriate type and intensity of exercise. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, I strongly recommend you consult a doctor or a personal trainer or both before you start an exercise programme designed to lower your blood pressure. Another thing you can look at is monitoring your caffeine intake. If you drink a lot of caffeine it has a blood pressure elevating effect upon the body, so try and reduce your caffeine intake. We know from Professor Matthew Walker’s brilliant book, Why We Sleep, that caffeine has a quarter life of 12 hours. A cup of coffee at 9.00am (for most of us), there’s still going to be remnants of caffeine at midnight. Caffeine is not only going to elevate our blood pressure, but it also causes problems with sleep and a lack of sleep can also cause an increase in blood pressure. Any form of stress upon the body can also increases our blood pressure. When it’s a good stress like exercise, that’s what we call eustress, and that’s good because the blood pressure will then correct itself when you recover. If it’s a distress, a bad form of stress, for example being very overweight, that is not a positive thing and that will also impact on your blood pressure. Have a look at ways you can also reduce and manage your stress levels. 16 | SE22 - July 2019

I would suggest exercise is your best course of action but, as I caution you, appropriate type and intensity of exercise - that is probably the remedy for so many different things. Sir Liam Donaldson, the former Chief Medical Officer, called it a wonder drug or a miracle cure. Exercise is the remedy for a great many things. If you are worried about your blood pressure, firstly you must get it checked and make sure you have actually got high blood pressure and you’re not just guessing. Always consult a doctor and think about consulting a personal trainer to help you work out the most suitable type and intensity of exercise that will work for you. So, get yourself out there and exercise your way back to good health.

Mums Against Plastic Baby-Wipes

Craftivist Group

Mums against plastic baby-wipes is a local group of mums who are protesting against plastic babywipes. They meet every week at Aneto café to embroider messages onto wipes (Off-cuts from a wet-wipe factory, no actual wipes were purchased). These are sent to politicians asking for wet wipes to be considered as a single use plastic as they are made from polyester. They have embroidered them into a beautiful quilt which they take on marches. • 1 in 3 wipes get flushed down the toilet • 93% of fatbergs are wipes • 200 years to biodegrade • 300% increase of wipes found in rivers and seas in the last 10 years The craftivist group was started by art activist Kath Lovett (www.kathlovett.com) who used wet wipes for 6 years on her two children before realising they were made from polyester. Like most parents she was worried about the future of the planet for her children. She has also made a series of garments from 24 | SE22 - July 2019

wipes. This is a gentle form of activism based on community building and support for parents. If you are interested in knowing more about this community craftivist group please get in touch with Kath at kath_lovett@yahoo.co.uk or 07845 274126.

Wet Wipe Craftivist Group Most Friday’s 9.30am-11.30am. All resources provided and no need for any skills, just a desire to stitch for the environment! Aneto Café 60 East Dulwich Road, East Dulwich SE22 www.anetocafe.com

Adventures in the Great Outdoors Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Richard Alldrick, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Coordinator at Alleyn’s, tells us how to help our children get the benefits of being outdoors. Having seen countless children through their Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards over the last 20 years, Richard is a keen advocate of the scheme. Apart from its focus on volunteering and skills, it also gets young people into the great outdoors, which is especially valuable and healthy for our London-based children. We all know that getting active and being outside is good for our physical and mental health and many parents are keen to reduce screen time and encourage socialising - away from social media. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme is run by many schools and youth groups but there are plenty of other ways to get your child active outdoors - and the great news is that many of them are low-cost or free.

Get Them While They Are Young Young children generally gravitate to all things natural. You can nurture this innate interest from a young age, with a garden or local park as great starting points. Encourage your child to interact with nature in their play - be it jumping off tree stumps, collecting insects or stirring mud with a stick - and tell them it is fine to get wet and dirty… because it all comes out in the wash! Here are some more ideas: • Have a picnic dinner at a playground or park. • Use some rope and an old sheet to build a den. • Create a simple treasure hunt for your child and some friends. • Get them along to an outdoor obstacle course such as Mini Mudders. • Look into the Girlguiding and/or Scout Associations; their sections for different age groups offer outdoor activities such as camping and abseiling.

The Older Child As your child gets older you can encourage outdoor time by doing homework outdoors, planning a walk or camping overnight in your garden. With more 26 | SE22 - July 2019

planning there are some great activities that might take you further afield: • Create an outdoor scavenger hunt for them and some of their friends. Dulwich or Sydenham woods would be a good start. • Get them involved in Junior Park Runs or triathlons. • Consider doing an orienteering course together – it is a great way to teach map reading and you can do it in an afternoon. • Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game that combines technology with adventure and can be enjoyed by the whole family. (See the link below for how to get started).

Encouragement If your child is not keen on the outdoors you could try giving them a few options so that they can decide which activity they would prefer, and if you join in too it will not only give you some quality time with them but your enthusiasm will be infectious. If all else fails, hide the remote control and switch off the Wi-Fi!

Are muzzles a good idea?

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

U

nder certain conditions even the friendliest dog can bite and a muzzle might be necessary. The very first time many dogs will ever wear a muzzle is at the vet for some sort of emergency procedure. Dogs that are frightened or in pain are much more likely to bite. Safety must come first, however sudden muzzling can make a traumatic experience even more difficult and may cause a lasting negative association for the dog, both with the vet clinic and the muzzle. In my view, each dog should be taught to wear a muzzle as part of everyday life. This means that on the very rare occasion the dog has to be muzzled (travelling abroad or a veterinary procedure are just two examples) the dog is already relaxed about wearing one. Muzzling can also be an important management tool as part of behaviour modification, especially in aggression cases, and for dogs that might be fearful of children or that are space- sensitive. However, even if a dog is muzzled, care should still be taken to avoid undue stress and exposure to things the dog fears or dislikes. For instance, regular muzzling of a dog that fears grooming should not be viewed as a solution; instead time should be taken to counter-condition the dog. Dogs that aggress with other dogs or humans should not be muzzled and then allowed off lead with other dogs or with humans. Even if your dog is muzzled you should make every effort to protect them from whatever triggers a fear aggressive response. In such cases, muzzling should be viewed as a short to medium term safety tool and an adjunct to behaviour modification with an expert. The Dangerous Dogs Act, section 3, applies to every dog in the land, in public and private. It says that a dog that presents a risk is only viewed as under control if it is muzzled and on a lead. A dog does not actually have to bite to be viewed as out of control, perception by those on the receiving end of the dog’s behaviour is a factor. Read the following link; every dog owner should be aware of their responsibilities in law https://www.nawt.org.uk/advice/changesdangerous-dogs-act-advice-owners

Choosing a muzzle depends on the face shape of your dog. For most dogs a Baskerville Ultra muzzle is a great option and this can be used with a head collar. Properly fitted it is secure but allows your pet to pant, drink water and take treats (this last bit is vital for effective muzzle training). Dogs with very narrow heads may do better with a greyhound basket muzzle and flat-faced, brachycephalic breeds will require a specialist bull breed muzzle. Seek advice from your vet as the dog must be able to breathe and must not overheat. However, do not consider using a sleeve muzzle of the type sometimes used by vets, this is not suitable for everyday use. Finally, how do you teach your pet to wear a muzzle? First of all, don’t force the muzzle on. Instead take days and even weeks to slowly build a very positive response to it. Start with the sight of the muzzle and reward, then have your dog retrieve treats from inside the muzzle, then reward the snap sound made by the muzzle fastener, next reward the strap fastened around the dog’s neck like a collar, then increase the duration the dog has their nose inside the muzzle, before putting it all together. Only progress each stage if the dog is relaxed and happy. Having lots of treats and rewards the dog loves is vital. The aim is to use classical conditioning so the dog has a ‘yipee’ response to the muzzle and is relaxed to wear it anywhere. For more information see: https://muzzleupproject.com/

Financial Matters

With David Frederick FCCA | Marcus Bishop Associates | marcus-bishop.com

Five areas of focus for home based businesses As the trend for home working continues to rise it is important that new and existing home based business owners are operating on the right side of the divide. Many of these business owners are trading, oblivious to the law and/or operate with advice from their most trusted business adviser, MMITP (my mate in the pub). Irrespective of the advice from MMITP, the five areas of focus for these businesses are set out below. Homebased business owners are not synonymous with home working employees

1) Approval Home based business owners need to consider the ownership of their premises because if it is not their property they require permission of the owner. Even if the business owner is the mortgagee, approval from the mortgage provider should be obtained. This is irrespective of the level of trading. It is always less costly to enter the path into problems than paying the costs and burden to get out. Similarly, if the property is rented, then the landlord’s approval will be required. The majority of tenancies are an Assured Shorthold Tenancy and require the tenant to occupy the premises as their principal home. Under such tenancies, the use of the premises for business except with the prior written consent of the landlord is wholly prohibited. In addition, local authority approval will be required in some cases such as: material alterations proposed for the premises; the business will result in increase in the volume of traffic at the premises; and a licence is required to trade.

2) Insurance A home business like any other business is only required by law to have employers’ liability insurance, if they have any employees. However the other additional classes of insurances that may be required are as follows: public liability insurance, if members of the public are to visit 34 | SE22 - July 2019

the premises. Buildings insurance may be required as domestic home insurance by default does not extend to commercial undertakings. Insurance may be required to cover any inventories stored on the premises. Specific sector industry and/or professional indemnity insurance may also be a requirement of the trade or governing body.

3) Business rates A home based business will often be exempt from business rates if only a small part of the premises is used for the business, or the business distributes goods by post. In all other home based business cases, business rates will be payable, especially where the property has been adapted for the operation of the business, such as the conversion of a garage into an office. However, there may still be an opportunity to obtain the small business rate relief.

4) Health and safety A home based business will have to address and comply with its health and safety compliance akin to any other trading business. It is advisable that all home based business owners ascertain their health and safety responsibilities.

5) Tax allowances A homebased business is able to claim a proportion of its premises and telecommunication costs as business expenses. A claim may be based upon the actual costs incurred or the use of the flat rate expenses scheme. For example a flat rate expense between £10 and £26 per month may be claimed for business home use, based upon the actual hours of monthly business use. A home based business may generate a capital gains tax liability for the business owner. Such a tax liability will arise if any part of the home was used wholly and exclusively for business purposes. The business tax allowances was the fifth area of focus, because too often home based business owners focus only on tax allowances at the expense of all the other areas. However any decision about starting a business from home should involve a holistic and balanced appraisal of all five areas.

Projects in Dulwich Hill As local councillors, we are delighted that the council has been able to fund key improvements to pathways and surfaces in the ward, including on Goodrich Rd, Dawson’s Hill and Piermont Green. The Dawson’s Hill pathway improvements were funded by the Cleaner Greener Safer Fund and have meant the steep pathway into Dawson Heights estate is now fully accessible (see picture below) as well as improved pathway access to Mount Adon Park. We welcome feedback on the new pathways and ideas for further improvements to the ward.

Dulwich Festival It was a pleasure to attend a wonderful performance of brass music by Onyx Brass at Dulwich Festival last month. The event took place in the stunning Chapel at Dulwich Gallery. The organisers of Dulwich Festival again put on a wide array of art and music events across the Dulwich area that were enjoyed by a large number of local residents. I look forward to next year’s festival!

Mental Health Awareness Week As Southwark Council’s Mental Health Champion, it is my role to be an advocate for mental health awareness within policy and strategy. During MH Awareness Week, I was able to attend a fantastic panel discussion in Southwark hosted by the EMPower Network on mental health within BAME communities, chaired by Cllr Evelyn Akoto. The discussion gave the audience significant food for thought on the barriers and discrimination black and Asian people face when trying to access mental health support and the steps needed to tackle this. Further information on the EMPower panel can be found in my joint blog post with Cllr Jasmine Ali, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Social Care, for the Mental Health Challenge. Cllr Ali focused on the challenges in mental health support for young people and the council’s commitment to 100% access to mental health support for children and adolescents by 2020. You can read the blog post here: http://www.mentalhealthchallenge.org.uk/ southwarks-bold-vision-children-young-peoplesmental-health/

School Funding campaign As part of the NEU councillor network, I helped to coordinate a letter to Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Education, highlighting the devastating impact of funding cuts to school budgets on children across the country. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, schools have suffered cuts of 8% since 2010. This has meant schools like Goodrich Primary and St Anthony’s Primary in Dulwich Hill are having to do more and more with less and less in a way that is unsustainable and unacceptable. The letter was signed by over 1000 councillors from across the political spectrum and was delivered to the Department for Education in April (see above). Worried about school cuts? Please get in touch.

Healthy Streets consultation Speeding, traffic and air pollution continue to be major issues in Dulwich Hill. The recent Healthy Streets consultation focused on collating resident views on these issues from across the Dulwich area. Councillors will be reviewing the feedback from the consultation and possible next steps for tackling speeding, traffic and air pollution over the coming months. Watch this space. Around Dulwich With Sarah Pylas | www.arounddulwich.co.uk |

L

ast month was possibly one of the most exciting in cinema history! Never before has a new film release been more eagerly anticipated… well in my household anyway! I was so excited that I walked into East Dulwich Picturehouse and pre-booked tickets just so I could see it before anyone else. I have watched the first 3 movies over and over again. I have followed the characters on their adventures and laughed and cried along with them. I have purchased all the film merchandise and spent far too many hours trying to locate a tiny cowboy hat before a 2-year old realised it was missing (I still sometimes wake up in a cold sweat shaking my husband and crying “Where’s Woody’s hat?!”). Yes, Woody and the toys are back for Toy Story 4 and I can’t wait to see what the old gang have been up to! Meanwhile, School PTAs from the green to the hill have been busy planning their annual summer fairs. Goose Green Primary School is hosting a summer carnival on Goose Green (6 July). There will be games, rides, performances, food stalls and a bar, as well as free activities for families and locals. Fairlawn Primary School on Honor Oak Road will be holding a Caribbean extravaganza (13 July), which promises to be lots of fun for all the family. I’ll be manning the coconut shy from 12pm so do pop in and say hello! Once again, The Brockley Potters be exhibiting their work as part of the Sydenham Arts Trail. This year the exhibition will be hosted by Forest Hill School (6-7 July) with a focus on ceramic art. Following the success of the Catford Vegan Festival last year, Catford Broadway will once again go car-free and meat-free (14 July). The festival will show that meat and dairy free doesn’t mean taste free. There’ll also be free kids’ activities, live music and an urban picnic area. As the school summer term draws to a close, it is time to spare a thought for all the parents preparing to compete in – or avoid sports day races! When my son was younger, he really wanted me to take part in the mums’ race, but now he is almost 10-years old he’d probably

be mortified - have you ever seen the episode of FRIENDS where Phoebe runs? Well, Phoebe has nothing on me… Now the nights are warmer, we’ll be spending a night camping with 60 of our son’s classmates at the South London Scout Centre in Dulwich. This is always such a fun day and night in the school social calendar, but all the required equipment and arguments over tent poles for 1 night around the campfire is exhausting! Next month, Peter Frost will lead a 2-hour walk around Peckham (11 August) embracing what was the ‘Golden Mile’ of the 1930s with its five department stores and art deco architecture. Green Rooms Market is returning to Peckham Springs (25 August) for a day of plant shopping, workshops, live music, food and drinks. The countdown to summer is on! Details of all local events, children’s activities and holiday summer clubs can be found on our website and on Instagram @ arounddulwich.
