Welcome to SE22 I am writing this just after the extreme heatwave we experienced and I am pleased to say it is lovely and cool in my office. Lucky for me, I was staying in an hotel with air conditioning during the worst of the heat! As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. August is still a popular month for events, despite the holidays, so we have eight pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. Please do check any event before turning up to make sure that they are still going ahead. Remember to check out www.arounddulwich.co.uk too. The East Dulwich Women’s Insitute have sent us an update on their last meeting. They are actively looking new members, so why not pop along to their next meeting, see p25. The team behind the Dulwich Festival are not resting now it is over, they are organising the Peckham Festival which takes place in September. They have kindly agreed to send us a preview on pages 30 & 31. The Last Word goes to Fabienne Hanton, a local volunteer at the fabulous Bell House. See page 32. he genus is huge and varied and contains more than 700 species. Culinary sage, Salvia officinalis, is a useful herb but also looks good in the border, especially the purple variety. But there are thousands more salvias to choose from in a multitude of colours. Native to the Americas, Europe and Asia, they tend to cope well with dry conditions and go on flowering into autumn. There are the shrubby Mexican group which have a woody framework and include Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ as well as newer bicoloured varieties such as ‘Amethyst Lips.’ These salvias have the biggest range of colours from pinks and purples such as the dusky S. ‘Nachtvlinder’, to pure white, peach and yellow such as delicate S. ‘Lemon Light’. There are also lots of lovely blues such as S. ‘Sky Blue’ and ‘So Cool Blue.’ ’Most salvias like a free draining soil and sun, but the shrubby Mexicans which have small leaves are particularly drought-tolerant and can cope with a lot of sun and dry impoverished soil. They can suffer in severe frosts. Keep shrubby Mexican salvias in a tight bush by pruning them back in mid-April by around a half but make sure you don’t cut down below the new

growth. In mid-summer, as well as taking off spent flower heads, you can give shrubby Mexicans a ‘Hampton hack’ by taking a third of the height off the plant to tidy them up and increase the amount of flowers for later in the season. Popular salvias such as S. nemerosa ‘Caradonna’ and other ‘cousins’ such as S. nemerosa ‘Sensation Rose’ and S. nemerosa ‘Amethyst’ are the European salvias. They do cope better with moisture retentive soil such as clay but may still need added grit or organic matter for improved drainage. Cut back in early summer for late flowering, or remove the flower heads as soon as they’ve finished. Half-hardy salvias include the very tall and striking S. guarantitica ‘Amistad’, which has stunning large dark purple flowers that go on into autumn, and the more unusual pinker S. ‘Amigo’. S. guaranitica ‘Blue Enigma’ and S. ‘Black and Blue’ are also lovely. Keep the flower stems in autumn and winter, to protect the rootball and developing shoots from frost. Protect from frosts and prune the dead stems to ground level only after new growth has emerged in mid to late April, or mulch over the crowns. These salvias cope with a little shade and richer soils.

6 red peppers, halved and deseeded Extra virgin olive oil A handful of fresh basil leaves 2 cloves of garlic, chopped 12 small chunks of feta cheese

Method Preheat the oven to 200oC/Gas mark 6 Place the peppers in a baking dish, cut side down, drizzle with olive oil Tuck the basil and garlic between the peppers, scatter the feta on top Bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes You can serve hot, warm or at room temperature Enjoy! his month’ article is about why should you prioritise your health. You might be young, you might be in your 30s, 40s, maybe in your 50s and it’s easy to think I’ve got 40/50 years left of life to live. Why should I be worried about my health? Why can’t I have some fun? Eat some good food, skip a run if I don’t feel like it. These are questions that I’ve thought about, and it’s really only in the last seven years, and perhaps even less than that, that I’ve really honed in on health. And one of the major contributing factors to doing that is longevity. I’m now in my late 40s, but I’m starting to think about what life’s going to look like when I’m in my 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. And it’s an aspiration of mine to be fit and healthy at age 100. I’m having to think about what that looks like then and what I’m going to need to look like now for me to do that. What I want to try and get you to do, is buy into the idea of not living for the moment all the time but really thinking about 30, 40 years’ time. Do you want to be in the position of looking back thinking I wish I’d done more, I wish I’d slept more, wish I’d moved more, wish I’d had better social connections, wish I’d done all these kinds of things. You’ve probably got passions, aspirations,

dreams, and it won’t be just about health and fitness, it could be about anything. Writing a book, growing up to see your great-grandchildren, but whatever it is, to get that sort of connection to health now, you need to think about those hopes, dreams and aspirations. You’re the engine of your life. You’re the one who’s going to get those dreams achieved. But you aren’t going to be able to do that if you’re unhealthy, if you’re in and out of hospitals, if you’re in a chair, if you’ve got a stick, if you are on insulin because you’re diabetic – that’s not going to get you to the place you want to be. Whatever your dreams and aspirations are, you still need to be the engine of those things. Take that as inspiration if you can to make some changes. Make those changes really small at the outset, the minimal effective dose. What’s the smallest thing you can do now that gets you a little bit closer to a healthier you? And then put that into place. When it’s cemented in and it’s just something you do automatically on autopilot, bring in another couple of other things. But appreciating that your health is at the very centre, the epicentre of your life and your dreams, your aspirations and everything else, that may help you to grasp the importance of looking at these things right now and not deferring it.

Here’s how we can increase our children’s enjoyment and develop their confidence in their abilities effectively (despite the sporting emotions some of us may feel!).

Find the right environment You can be a great influence from the touchline, but if the coach or teammates are not then your child’s enjoyment and development could be affected. Ensure the organisation your child plays with has the FA charter standard and that the coaches are suitably qualified. Most importantly, trust your instincts; is the atmosphere one you wish your daughter or son to spend time in?

Be consistent It is natural to be excited when your child does well but don’t overdo it! If they perceive you to be overly invested in their success, whether you are or not, they may begin to fear letting you down. Your child needs to know that however they play, your feelings for them will not change.

Celebrate the process Your child can play and behave very well and still lose the match. They can also play and behave poorly and win. Celebrate their individual effort, contribution and progress rather than the actual scorelines.

Let the coach work You are entitled to your opinion – just keep it to yourself during the game! A decent coach will likely have more than the score in mind, including pastoral factors that impact the roles they allocate to children on the day. Trust that they are doing the best for every player, and engage in constructive conversations or work through appropriate channels if you feel there is a problem. 20 | SE22 - August 2022

Be positive! Applaud and encourage good play and attitude (from both teams) and offer consolation and support in adversity. The same goes for the officials – let them do their job, we have no game without them – and you will also be setting a great example to your child!

Challenge privately and respectfully If a child is in immediate risk of harm then it is appropriate to challenge a decision – otherwise avoid confrontation or overt criticism during or immediately after the game. Most coaches will be open to constructive, respectful conversations away from a game day.

Let your child own it! Everything above can be summed up here: find the right place, somewhere your child can flourish on and off the pitch and then let them get on with it. Make sure they know you care and that you are there for them but allow them to feel the ups and the downs - ultimately, it is their game and their personal development!

Summer in SE22 Now that the summer is really here, there are lots of things to do. The Goose Green School Carnival parade last month was a great success. The children paraded with banners and there was music and dance performances for the community to enjoy. The Summer reading challenge comes to Dulwich Library on Thursday the 4th August between 11am and 12 noon. A chance for kids 6+ to meet and learn about exotic animals. Sydenham Hill Wood is a little way out of the SE22 area where Walks for Families happen. There are many types of birds and woodland animals as well over 200 species of trees and plants. New Market for Melbourne Grove After a successful consultation a small new market in Melbourne Grove will be trialled starting on Saturday the 10th September running through until late December. During this trial period the Council will invite a number of market operators to run the market on successive weeks, providing a range of stalls from arts and crafts to fresh food. This will help the Council to find out what the local community wants and needs from a market. James McAsh and myself are proud to be instigators of this market and hope for its lasting success.

Extreme Weather The weather in June and July has seen extremes in temperatures. These conditions have been unbearable for many, especially for our older population. Jubilee Celebrations The Goose Green Ward hosted a number of street parties to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. My colleague Councillor Portia Mwangangye visited six of the street closures on the day. They were all an outstanding success giving local residents the chance to meet up and get to know each other better. Many residents want to do more of these later on in the year. Why not have a street party on the weekend before Christmas? Wrap up well, sing some carols, have some mulled wine and possibly Santa Claus might make a visit to surprise the children.

Covid 19 Infections across Southwark are still rising. Although symptoms are not as extreme as in previous outbreaks, residents are still reporting feeling ill with cold and flu type episodes. If you have not had a vaccination against this virus, it is not too late. If you test positive for Covid, stay at home and isolate for five days or until you show a negative result. Please wear a mask when using public transport or being in any confined space.

Shoplifting on the rise I have visited a number of retailers on Lordship Lane and North Cross Road who are telling me how blatant some shoplifters have become. These criminals know staff have been told not to intervene during these thefts which makes it easier for the shoplifters. I have had discussions with the local police regarding this matter. Unfortunately, there are not enough police officers to cope. I am suggesting some kind of network between the shops that could alert easy other that shoplifters were on the street. am seeing quite a number of clients who are new to dog ownership. To a person, they are committed and desperate to do the very best they can for their new pet. However, many of these owners also have one thing in common and that is a stated desire to provide their dogs with lots of “stimulation”. Quite frequently, these same owners berate themselves for not providing enough of the “s” word and view this lack as the most likely source of whatever problems they are having with their dog. Yes, dogs do need suitable outlets for whatever working drives they come genetically primed with...up to a point. Designer breeds are no exception, a fair few may have a double whammy on the genetic front, picking up on working traits from whatever purebreds have gone into their development. For instance, many cockapoos have a strong dose of working cocker behind them. However, to be realistic, we are not going to train our cockapoo to flush, quarter or pick up in the field. Instead, we use selective training and structured games to satisfy some of the dog’s innate drive. All this is very different from giving our pet freedom to enjoy stimulation all day long. Like a fractious over-tired toddler, an over-stimulated dog can be extremely trying. The most difficult time is at adolescence when the animal is already hyped up on hormones, primed to push the envelope and almost incapable of self-regulation. It easy to think that the fix is more stimulation to tire the dog out. Loads of hard exercise may indeed cause the dog to eventually collapse in an exhausted heap, much to everyone’s relief; but nothing of use is being learned. Dogs in a ‘boom and bust’ cycle of inability to settle and then hours of exercise or, worse, play-fighting with other dogs, are not learning to switch off. Rest and calm are the keys to healthy development, both mental and physical. It is essential that young dogs are given enough stimulation to enjoy life but equally important is developing an off switch and it will pay lifelong dividends. Many dogs will also benefit from a simple strategy known as ‘Learn to Earn’. Quite simply, this programme teaches your dog that although he can get the good stuff from you, whether food, play or cuddles, in return he must first exhibit behaviour you like. All we ask is that the dog exhibits calm behaviour or a polite “sit” in order to get the things he values. This can be surprisingly effective in beginning to teach the dog to slow down and take a beat, learning that calm behaviour gets him access to his favourite things. It also introduces greater structure to interactions throughout the day and gradually the dog learns to accept that if you are not available for interaction and with nothing else to do, he may as well sleep. Of course, within the context of ‘Learn to Earn’ it is vital the dog knows that there will be quality time set aside for him, involving adequate structured exercise, training and play. Outside of this, instead of being in a perpetual state of anticipatory high alert, your dog learns to switch off.

It’s all change this August Traditionally, August is the month of the great getaway to sun, sea and sand. However, this year may be quite different for overseas holiday seekers. This has nothing to do with the challenges of our airports or airlines or any other vacation related activity. At the end of this month trustees of UK express trusts and certain non-UK trusts that came into existence on or before 6th October 2020, must ensure that their trusts have been registered with the UK Trust Registration Service (TRS). As the deadline date is 1st September 2022. The TRS was born on 26th June 2017, to provide a register of the beneficial owners of trusts. Initially, this was a component of the EU anti money laundering strategy and fulfilment of The Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Amendment) Regulations 2019. However, registration by 1st September 2022 arrived post Brexit in October 2020. This change automatically widened the previous legislation, which had only required trusts that paid certain taxes to be registered with the TRS. The October 2020 legislation effectively provided mandatory registration of all trusts. The new requirement became, all UK trusts, excluding those granted HMRC exemption (tinyurl. com/3vxadmws) and some non-UK trusts that came into existence on or after 6 October 2020, to register with HMRC by 1st September 2022. This also included trusts that had been closed since 6th October 2020. However, trustees of taxable relevant trusts are not granted the luxury of 1st September 2022. Such trusts set up before fiscal year 2021-22, have a registration deadline date of, on or before 31 January after the tax year in which the tax liability occurred. If the taxable relevant trust had an income tax or capital gains tax liability for the first time, the trust registration deadline is 5th October after the end of the tax year. With this in mind, it is imperative that trustees are fully aware of what trust they have and what is the deadline for registration with the TRS. It is not unusual for trusts to be born out of the will of a deceased individual. Trustees should 28 | SE22 - August 2022

be aware that will trusts are also required to be registered unless they were closed within two years of the date of death. Registration of the trust with HMRC is the responsibility of the lead trustee. However, trust deeds rarely state a lead trustee. This requires the trustees to appoint their own lead trustee and it is this trustee’s responsibility to register the trust. Some trustees may find the task of trust registration unattractive for a variety of reasons, often because it is outside of their comfort zone. If this is the case, trustees may appoint an agent to register their trust. However, the trade-off is there will be a financial charge. HMRC provides a comprehensive list (bit.ly/3o4lddO) of the information required to register a trust. Following registration of a trust, trustees have an ongoing obligation to maintain complete and up to date records of the trusts’ beneficial owners; trustees; the beneficiaries; and the person(s) who set up the trust (settlor). In addition, there is a requirement to annually update the register and in the event of any significant changes in the life of the trust. The current HMRC penalty for non-compliance is a modest £100. However, this penalty is likely to be increased to a more penal deterrent for errant trustees who deliberately fail to comply. So as August draws to a close and before trustees disappear to enjoy the sun, sea and sand, a final check must be undertaken to ensure their trust is registered or it has been delegated to an appropriate agent.

And then there's others like Krasniqi, Owusu, Comley, and Osaghe, who have driven the Hamlet's crack team of terrace songwriters to frenziedly ransack the back catalogue of early nineties electronica for inspiration. eckham Festival (CIC) returns from 15-18th September with a long weekend of art, performances and activities for everyone. Created in 2016, the free event aims to support a more cohesive and diverse multi-generational community through the arts and celebrates the diverse creativity, culture and community of Peckham and beyond. Festival events will be held across Peckham, with two of the main sites located at Copeland Park and Peckham Levels, creative hubs that were formerly a Victorian factory and multi storey car park. The heartbeat of the festival is the family friendly Community Hub, where local community groups, charities and organisations offer free talks and workshops. Festival goers will have the chance to try new experiences and engage with local action groups. This year there will be a health and well-being element offering free fitness classes including Hip Hop Yoga and Pilates. The ‘Made in Peckham’, open spaces event will see over a hundred local artists open up their homes, workshops and studios over two weekends this year, offering the public an intimate and unique insight into their work practices. Art forms range from fine art to sculpture; jewellery; ceramics; photography; print and furniture design. The festival stage at Copeland Park will offer a variety of performances ranging from the Nunhead Community Choir and Rye Chapel reggae gospel band to the Peckham Chamber Orchestra; South London Youth Theatre; carnival performance

One of the underlying themes of this year's festival is sustainability. Peckham-based Electric Pedals will launch this year’s event with a bicycle-powered film screening outside at Copeland Park simultaneously promoting the value of electricity and cycling. Copeland Gallery will feature 'Life after Life', curated by local artist Katrina Adams. By challenging a consumer, habitual society and culture in which goods and services create waste, the exhibition showcases works where artists are predominantly striving to find more sustainable ways to develop their practice and those of others including art pieces created during the pandemic when usual materials were hard to acquire and repurposing ‘lost’ & ‘found’ objects. Through their art, exhibiting artists ask visitors; “Is the future of art changing to help minimise its impact both socially and environmentally?” Local sustainable mead producer, Gosnell’s Mead, who ferment their honey in Peckham will be bringing their mead garden to the festival and there’ll be a sustainable makers popup curated by local event organisers, Pexmas. Do you belong to any groups? I am part of one of the oldest reading groups in Dulwich. We have been meeting for 35 years! And I’ve recently joined a French Film watching group.

Where are you to be found on Saturday? Saturday is one of our busiest days at Bell House. I often join our volunteer gardeners, drop in on Simon Trewin who has set up the Garage Press at Bell House, and meet new volunteers. If there’s a filmmaking class or art class happening, I make sure that they have refreshments.

Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee at Redemption Roasters if I’m in Dulwich Village or Perks & White if I’m grabbing a quick one before catching a train from Herne Hill

Your favourite place to go for a drink? The Picturehouse in Lordship Lane or while watching a film at the Everyman cinema in Crystal Palace as there’s nothing that appeals to me more than doing two things at once.

When I want to relax... My name is Fabienne Hanton and I am a volunteer at Bell House Dulwich. I am currently part of a team of volunteers organising the annual Bell House Dyslexia Fair which will be on Saturday 10th September.

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in the area most of my life having moved south of the river when I was a baby. Although I have family abroad in both Switzerland and Mauritius.

What has changed most during that time? The emergence of the “super school”, the low traffic neighbourhood and increased cycling.

What do you most value about the area? I love engaging with locals who come to Bell House with ideas for new projects or who want to volunteer with us. Our Quilt Academy makes quilts for different communities such as premature babies, refugees and children leaving care. It was one of the first projects that started in this way and now has over 50 stitchers. 32 | SE22 - August 2022

I explore the Bell House garden which has everything: woodland, roses, vegetable beds, a new bog garden and more. And now the garden is open on the first Saturday of every month so anyone can watch it change with the seasons.
