Welcome to Rainstick I am delighted to present our new catalogue. It is filled with wacky and unusual craft items, gifts, musical instruments, and all kinds of nice things! I really hope you find something that inspires you and that you can sell. Although I started the business on a market stall in ’94, things have moved on since then! I take my inspiration from what is available naturally, looking especially for items which are tactile, sustainable, and which support artisans in developing countries. In a world dominated by vast corporations and technology giants, it is great to find someone making leather passport holders by hand in Ecuador. Compared to iphone sales of 34,000 per hour it may not make much difference, but it feels OK. We have found our place in the market (such as it is!) by travelling and developing relationships with suppliers in places where perhaps the big boys won’t go. And so it is that for over a decade we have been buying our ocarinas and ceramic bird callers from a tiny workshop perched high in the Sacred Valley of Peru. I visited last November to find the road still unpaved, the village not on google maps, but the workshop light and active and providing employment. It is there that I took the photo of the smiling children you see opposite. (they are not our workers, LOL!). We have dozens of suppliers like that. Some are individuals like Suzanna who have created their own thing (p12). Some are artisanal families like Manuel and Anna whose house is half workshop, half home (photo above, left). Others are established businesses registered with fair-trade organisations, or co-operatives. But what they all share is a desire to work, to persevere, to pass on their skills to their children, and to plough their own furrow in a globalised world.

FROG WITH STICK These frogs are hand-carved using the wood of the jack fruit tree. Simply hold the frog in one hand and stroke its ridged back with the thick end of the stick provided. Originating from the Atacama desert of northern Chile the rainstick or rainmaker gives us a lovely paradox: How can something from the world’s driest region, made from a cactus, sound like a tropical downpour? The hollow stick can be made from cactus or bamboo. Inside it has a labyrinth of needles through which little pebbles tumble and fall recreating the sound of falling rain as you turn the stick upside down. Use your rainstick to call the rain!!!

Panama hats have always been made in Ecuador but were often shipped and sold from Panama hence the name. They are woven using the toquilla palm. Although they can actually be rolled up I do not recommend this! All hats are supplied in a mix of the most popular sizes (or as requested), in a mix of three colours – blanco (white), havano (natural) and colores (multi coloured mix).
