Burnham Market: North Norfolk – New Builds

THE CHALLENGE HA Consulting Engineers were contracted to work on a small development in this highly desirable North Norfolk location. The site was a former filling station that had been unused for years due to oil contamination.

After the pollution had been cleared, planning permission was achieved for a small development of luxury homes.

All the houses featured exposed traditional timber trusses, with one of the key properties in the development featuring a circular tower. The architect approached HA Consulting Engineers for our recommendations on how to create a striking effect with this structural feature.

THE SOLUTION Our solution was to devise a scheme with a conical slated roof supported by a circular laminated timber column, with walkways providing access to the room on either side. Utilising a sectional design with steel struts to hold the weight of the roof, this created a fantastic feature when viewed both internally and externally.

Chrisp Street, London A fifteen storey luxury apartment block in London’s Canary Wharf district. Built in tandem with integral upgrades to a nearby major DLR rail route.

THE CHALLENGE The site of a former diary building was to be developed into a luxury high rise development. Directly behind the site a new station Langdon Park was being constructed as part of upgrades to the DLR railway line. The close proximity of the railway project resulted in comprehensive restriction being in place requiring large amounts of coordination with the railway authorities during the project. The small site coupled with the need to maximise the building footprint meant that space was at a premium and careful consideration had to be given on the method of construction taking into consideration very limited site storage and restricted access.

THE SOLUTION Working closely with the project Architect, HA developed a flat slab reinforced concrete frame design incorporating a high number of identical structural elements to maximise the reuse of formwork and minimise storage requirements on site.

HA were instrumental is resolving a major issue that arose on site with problems discovered with the installed reinforcement in the ten main feature ground floor columns. Carbon fibre wrap reinforcement was designed to overcome the initial issue but a further problem arose with the fire protection of the wrap reinforcement. HA carried out extensive research on various possible solution and we were able to develop a solution which satisfied all statuary requirements. The solution was innovative, quick and easy to install preventing delay to the project.

Cley Visitor Centre New Visitors’ Centre for Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) – Cley Marshes, Norfolk

THE CHALLENGE The existing Visitor’s Centre was a small timber and thatch building marked for refurbishment as part of the new project. NWT’s main objective was to create a new structure to complement this building. This space needed to be somewhere visitors could relax and buy refreshments, whilst enjoying the undisturbed panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The project required a green footprint in order to reflect NWT’s commitment to the environment and conservation. This included a 6kW wind turbine, a free standing 4.0m² unit of south facing solar panels and a ground source heat pump consisting of 400 linear metres of piping buried beneath a purpose built mound to the east of the building. In addition to this HA Consulting Engineers implemented a rainwater harvesting system and a green roof, to help the new build become a self-sufficient entity.

THE SOLUTION Careful consideration was given to the materials used on the project, to ensure that they were environmentally friendly. This approach included the use of concrete blocks from suppliers known to use sustainable and recycled resources in their production processes. For in-situ RC items a sustainable mix design that included elements such as PFA was employed, with mineral wool being used to fill the cavity walls.

The building was designed with an L-shaped footprint, utilising external space at the rear together with roof overhangs to protect it from the blustery winds affecting the North Norfolk coast. Even the structural grid of the roof was developed in accordance with standard plywood sheet sizes to minimise the amount of waste on site.

The complex double curvature green roof and its exposed feature support required a high level of design and detailing to ensure that it was correctly fabricated. We worked closely with the fabricators, performing extensive inspections throughout the production process to check that the appropriate finish was achieved.

Whilst this building creates a striking profile at close proximity, it successfully blends into the landscape when viewed from a distance. The continuous band of glazing helped realise the ambition of creating a floating-style roof structure, which enables visitors to see straight through the building.

This project won the Institution of Structural Engineers East Anglian Branch Award for Structural Excellence.

THE CHALLENGE HA Consulting Engineers were engaged to provide structural engineering designs and advice on the residential refurbishment of two buildings at Curly Tail Farm.

A small barn on site required a complete feasibility study to convert it into a residential unit whilst the stately old farmhouse required refurbishment and the addition of a new extension.

One of the most urgent challenges faced by the engineering team was dealing with severe damp in the farmhouse walls.

The bricks had become extremely soft and were reverting to their original clay state due to absorption of moisture from the building’s shallow, waterlogged foundation.

THE SOLUTION Before we even considered the refurbishment of the structure and interior, a solution had to be implemented to save the building from collapse.

We devised an underpinning method, which used waterproof concrete to isolate the soft bricks from the saturated ground. This required careful detailing of a number of hydrophilic strip bars, ensuring that the waterproof concrete achieved the isolation necessary.

All of this work had to be completed without causing damage to the extremely vulnerable brickwork.

THE OUTCOME Thanks to our solution the brickwork completely dried out during the course of the project and the bricks have reverted to their original hard set state, providing the structural stability for the building to last for years to come – without the need for us to deploy damp-proof coursing or a membrane in the property.

THE CHALLENGE The services of HA Consulting Engineers were engaged to work on a new development project in London, working on a site within St John’s Wood Conservation area where the previous property had been demolished. An exceptional design was developed in conjunction with Robert Adam Architects to meet the demands of the Planners.

The development was composed of four high specification, classic Georgian style houses featuring marble and granite stonework, hand carved oak and cast iron detail with Portland stone decorative work.

One of the main challenges faced by HA Consulting Engineers was the question of how to support the Portland Stone. The cantilevered walls on the property used a cavity wall that did not have the strength to hold the weight of the stone. In addition to this a mansard roof was required to hide a gutter behind the stone parapets.

THE SOLUTION To provide the building with the structural strength required, we designed steel frames that were incorporated into the construction of the masonry walls, helping resist the considerable overturning forces coming from the weight and pressure of the cantilevered stonework. These were seamlessly integrated with both the interior and
