As the vessel motors on, the discussion turns to reed cutting and thatch, the importance of reed beds as a home for milk parsley, the Swallowtail butterfly or the elusive Bittern, and how the Alder that grows in the vicinity is used to protect the banks. “We explore the importance of good management of the Broads to ensure the plants and trees don’t grow out of control and take over the landscape,” explained Barbara. “The trip is interactive throughout and we want the children to think about the environment they are travelling through.” As the boat journeys along the River Bure and into Wroxham Broad, the commentary reflects on peat digging, the growth of leisure boating in the 1960s and 1970s and the conflict between tourism and conservation. The two-hour educational visit also looks at the impact of pollution and erosion as well as how the waters became over-enriched by nitrates washed from farmland and phosphates. Heading past the yacht club and one of the historic Norfolk Wherries, the Discoverer takes its young passengers into Salhouse Broad where boat skipper Tobi Radcliffe leads the children ashore for a 25-minute walk along nature trails.

“Once we reach Salhouse Broad,” he said, “I talk to the children about the wildlife to look out for and how this broad differs from other broads in that it was created by extraction of gravel and sand rather than peat. “We look at some of the plants such as water mint and discuss whether nettles are good or bad – they may sting but they provide shelter for animals and are good for butterflies such as Red Admirals. We demonstrate if the Broads are not managed they will eventually be gone.” From Salhouse it is back on the boat back to Wroxham, or to the Hoveton Nature Trail for a walk and pond dipping. Common birds such as moorhens, coots, geese, ducks and swans are all around while children can see where Egyptian geese are nesting on the roof of a summer house. There are dragonflies and occasionally an otter, too. Most trips run in May and June or September for schools across Norfolk and some from further afield. Barbara said: “We love running these tours and think they are really important for the next generation to appreciate the Broads and know what a special and unique environment it is.”

When the Discoverer is not being used for school parties, it is available for interest groups such as photography enthusiasts and the WI to charter for trips to the Hoveton Great Broad Nature Trail. Contact Barbara Greasley on 01603 782207 or visit: www.broadstours.co.uk

Wells-next-the-Sea is a great place for a day out, as Carolyn Atkins discovers... Just over an hour from Norwich, Wells is a different world. Forget shopping centres and chain restaurants; here you’ll find independent stores and eateries and a wealth of outdoor activities. Park near the quay or next to The Buttlands at the back of the town; surrounded by impressive Georgian and Victorian houses, this lovely, lime tree-lined green is perfect for a ball game or picnic – if you’re not heading straight to the beach. Wander down Staithe Street, with its gift shops and bucket and spade stores, and stop for a drink in the pretty garden outside The Mermaid’s Purse gift shop - a veritable treasure trove. At the bottom of the street you’ll find the quay, the beautiful tidal stretch of water which makes Wells so special, and where visitors love to go crabbing or sit on the wall eating fish and chips. Wells Harbour Railway runs a miniature steam train to the beach, and there’s a large, modern playground close by with a pirates’ ship, swings and a football pitch. However, Wells is most famous for its fabulous, long, sandy beach where Gwyneth Paltrow took a stroll in Shakespeare in Love, and for its colourful beach huts and attractive pine woodland.

This Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is the perfect place for a walk and you can stroll as far as Holkham (around 1.5 miles away); there’s also a cycle track a little way inland.

Picture : Reed Bowden

There’s also a smart, Holkham-run beach café with an attractive outdoor seating area where dogs are very welcome. Meanwhile, in Stearmans Yard by the quay, you’ll find some quaint fishermen’s cottages, which are well worth a look (absolutely tiny by today’s living standards) and the revamped Maltings buildings, The Maltings, Sackhouse and Granary Theatre, which host craft fairs and exhibitions, as well as the Screen-nextthe-Sea. Plus there’s a Pirate Festival in September which raises money for The Wells Maltings Trust. An old Dutch sailing barge, The Albatros, is moored in the harbour and acts as a bar, restaurant, music venue and B&B (Captain Ton Brouwer is known for his pancakes), while The Crown Pub and Globe Inn are both family-friendly. However the highlight of the tourist season is definitely the Wells Carnival, held for 10 days every summer (Friday 31st July to Sunday 9th August 2015).

Next time you’re out for a walk, take a look along the roadside, where all sorts of fascinating spring flowers, insects and animals are waiting in the verges to be discovered… Birdsong and wildflowers: spring would not be spring without them! But can you recognise some of the common spring wildflowers found along Norfolk’s roadside verges? Well, everyone knows daisies and dandelions – or do they? Few wildflower meadows remain in Norfolk but our roadside verges can be a haven for wildflowers, and where there are flowers there will be butterflies and bees to spot. In the longer grass, small mammals such as shrews and voles can thrive and their predators - barn owls, kestrels, foxes, weasels and stoats - all hunt along grassy verges. So our roadside verges are like long, thin nature reserves and help wildlife move across the landscape. Make sure when you go exploring roadside verges that you wear something bright and be alert for traffic. Wherever you live in Norfolk there will be a roadside verge with spring flowers for you to discover nearby.

The newly-refurbished Sea Life Sanctuary in Hunstanton is full of fascinating sea creatures and is well worth a visit, as FunOutside’s Carolyn Atkins discovers…

When I asked my seven-year-old son, James, to name his favourite creature at the Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary, he didn’t even hesitate. “The turtle!” was his instant reply. Ernie the giant green sea turtle is a huge attraction for the centre and, when we visited in early January, we were especially lucky, as Ernie’s friend Noah was visiting him from Great Yarmouth’s Sea Life Sanctuary while work was being carried out there, so we got to see both fabulous creatures frolicking in the water. Fortunately for us, when we arrived on our tour, the turtles and sharks were about to have their lunch and so we headed to their tank to join the other visitors watching Entertainments Team member Ally feed them their greens (they eat broccoli, lettuce, cabbage and kale) and to learn more about them. Ally asked if anyone knew how long a turtle can live for and, again, James didn’t deliberate: “150 years!” he exclaimed, as any self-respecting Finding Nemo fan knows (there’s a great clip in the film where Crush the turtle tells Nemo: “I’m 150 years young, dude!”). Norfolk’s Nemo fans have plenty to keep them occupied at the Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary. There’s a tank full of the brightly-coloured clown fish, and younger visitors can even scramble under it so that they emerge in a special section to see these attractive creatures at very close range. You can also do this in the middle of the Piranha tank towards the beginning of the tour (thankfully, again, in the ‘Heads-Up Dome’, so there’s no chance of being bitten!). While I also liked the turtles, my favourite sea creatures have got to be the graceful sea horses as well as the many rays which look like little funny-faced ghosts floating by in their specially constructed new curved-sided tank, which is great for close-up viewing.

The Sea Life Sanctuary suffered extensive damage in the tidal surge on 5th December 2013 and spent 10 months being re-built, repaired and enhanced, during which time its water-loving inhabitants were housed in other sea life centres up and down the country (fortunately most of the animals survived the storm). After a £3m-plus refurbishment, the Sanctuary was officially opened to the public again on Thursday 16th October 2014 by the aptly-named former BBC weatherman Michael Fish, and it’s the perfect place for a family outing, with plenty of attractions inside if the weather is cold and lots more outside when it’s not. We ventured from one fascinating room to another, solving the clues on the Dive Adventure Quiz Trail in order to claim our medal on our way out. The Sea Life Sanctuary champions all sorts of conservation issues and the quiz questions helped us to focus on some of these. For example, Ally told everybody about the perils of throwing rubbish into the ocean; plastic bags fill up with water and look like jellyfish to turtles and other animals and so can end up being eaten, causing them harm. Ernie, who was rescued from the Cayman Islands where he was destined to become soup, helps to highlight the plight of sea turtles around the world. We bought some fish food at the entrance and fed the Pacu fish in their tank next to the crocodile enclosure. They gobbled it up very quickly and so if there are a few of you in your party, a few packets would be a good idea.

Then it was outside to see the penguins, the fantastic seal rescue centre, other seals swimming in their impressive new tank, and the adorable Asian short-clawed otters. These outdoor enclosures have been cleverly constructed with underwater windows so that you can watch the animals swimming along, and they make fascinating viewing. When the weather’s better, there’s also a large outdoor play area called Pirate Bay, and back inside, a great gift shop full of fabulous fish-themed products (James chose a clear plastic cup with a little plastic clown fish swimming in the bottom). The Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary offers plenty to see and do, and we’ll certainly be returning later in the year to visit our friend Ernie. We’d recommend that you do the same and, if you do go, remember to let FunOutside magazine know which animals are your favourites!

The Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary is on Southern Promenade, Hunstanton, PE36 5BH. Tel: 01485 533576. www.visitsealife.com/hunstanton

ings Spring!

Being involved in the growing of plants is a fun and educational experience for children of all ages. Their enormous curiosity and excitement over anything new makes them natural gardeners. Not only does gardening bring a connection between your child and the environment it also helps improve valuable life skills, teaches patience and gives them a sense of accomplishment (not to mention a chance to get their hands Be dirty!). So, where do you start?

Creati

ve

Make it their own! Give them their own patch (and not just the damp shady spot in the corner!) where they can grow their own vegetables, fruit and flowers. Children like their independence and they’ll get a real kick out of watching their very own plants grow. If garden space is an issue then pots on windowsills and garden boxes are a great alternative. Be creative when choosing a container, the more elaborate it is the longer it’ll keep them engaged. Old wellington boots, watering cans, long forgotten toys and old car/tractor tyres are always a good place to start. Most local farmers and car garages are willing to give old tyres away free of charge to avoid having to pay for recycling costs.

They reap what they sow! Planting seeds can be a great way to start off their gardening adventure. To avoid children’s boredom choose fast growing seeds, the quicker they can see something happen, the more interested they’ll be in the process. Radishes and courgettes are great choices to begin with as your children will see results in no time. The more unusual or abnormally large a plant is, the more exciting it’ll be. When it comes to size, the giant sunflower is an all time classic! You should be able to plant the majority of seeds now, just check the back of the packet for instructions.

Stacking old pallets or untreated wood will make the foundations of their home while filling the gaps with bark, twigs, straw and garden trimmings will ensure it’s extra snug!

Grow it, Eat it! If you asked your child where food comes from, the chances are they’ll tell you the supermarket. Having knowledge of where their food comes from and how fruit and veg is harvested is essential in understanding better nutritional values and practices. After lovingly planting, watering, caring and finally harvesting their fruit and veg they will naturally be intrigued as to what it tastes like! Research has now proven that children who have an understanding or who are involved in the growing of food are far more likely to have a healthier diet. In fact the teaching of plants and how they grow is already part of a child’s curriculum in Key Stage 1 and Year 1 guidance even goes as far as to say that ‘Where possible, they should observe the growth of flowers and vegetables that they have planted.’ Gardening can become a life long skill and passion as well as being very good fun at the same time. Remember to start simple and make it engaging, Get them plantin make it visibly appealing and let g your child revel in their independence. Whatever you decide to do with your child this spring, let your garden grow with your child! by Mark Ives. Thetford Garden Centre

Birds & Mini-beasts (Bugs!) Enjoying the garden isn’t just about plants, kids love things that move, anything with wings or one too many legs will grab their attention. Attracting birds is a relatively easy way of introducing wildlife into your garden, like our children, birds tend to think with their bellies so ensure you’ve always got plenty of food available and you’ll have feathery visitors in no time. Place your feeders in spots where the birds can identify danger easily to reduce opportunities for predators like sparrowhawks and cats, also avoid putting them near to windows to prevent birds flying into them. Mini-beasts are by far the most numerous and diverse of animals in the garden and your child will find them truly fascinating. Although mini-beasts can be found in plenty of natural places such as dense plant growth or beside ponds, building them a home will attract all types to the same spot and make them easily visible to your child. Before making your home you need to find the right spot, a sheltered position in the sun is ideal.

Take a look around Dereham and see things that you may not have noticed before. Our treasure hunt is different this time and you will need to solve all the clues, which will lead you to the final answer. The walk should only take an hour and it is about a mile and a half of easy walking. Did you know that place names can often give clues to what used to be in the area? Most of our towns and villages have names that relate to the geography of the area, trades which were common in those times, families who founded the settlement etc. Look at the name of the place where you live and see if you can find out what its origin is.

Submit your answer by email to info@funoutside.co.uk. Entries must be received by 30th April. All successful entries will be entered into the prize draw and one winner will be chosen at random. The Editor’s decision is final. Normal FunOutside terms & conditions apply.

Spring wouldn’t be spring without lots of lovely lambs frolicking about and there are a number of places in Norfolk where you can see these adorable animals close up and even have a chance to bottlefeed them. Farmers often have their hands full dealing with these cute, cuddly creatures and they are very grateful for the public’s help. At Wroxham Barns, the popular lamb-feeding sessions are running daily until early summer. They take place in the main barn on Junior Farm at 11am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm when children and adults alike can have a go at feeding the lambs and will also learn more about them. For more information, visit: www.wroxhambarns.co.uk. Then on Tuesday 31st March the popular Norfolk Spring Fling will return to the Norfolk Showground. Aimed at those aged four to 14, this fun-filled event is all about food, farming and the countryside and there’ll be another chance to see some lovely lambs at close range. The event takes place from 9.30am to 3.30pm and tickets must be purchased in advance – see: www.royalnorfolkshow.co.uk for details. On Easter Monday 6th April, there’ll be lambs gambolling about at the Gressenhall Spring Fair near Dereham (turn to page 24). Lambs can also be seen at Snettisham Park in North Norfolk (www.snettishampark.co.uk) and Melsop Farm Park near Watton (www.melsopfarmpark.co.uk).

The Spring Fair at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is well worth a visit, with a host of activities on offer… Fancy a day out in the fresh air with friends and family? Then head over to Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse for their annual Spring Fair. This popular event, from 10am to 5pm on Easter Monday, 6th April, has something for everyone, with local produce for sale plus live music and dance, an afternoon parade and more. Conquer the exciting inflatable obstacle course and see who can make it the furthest on the bungee run. Enjoy timeless Punch and Judy Shows, practise your circus skills with Foolhardy Circus Arts and meet the Spirit of Carnival team with their stunning costumes and talented stilt walkers. Wander down to Gressenhall Farm to watch the heavy horses working in the fields and to meet the new arrivals this springtime. Gressenhall is always worth a visit, thanks to its collection of fascinating buildings which offer a unique insight into the history of rural Norfolk, telling the tale of life on the land over the past 250 years. The former workhouse is set within 50 acres of traditional farmland where you can explore the beautiful Norfolk countryside through a trail that leads through the fields and along the River Whitewater. Traditional cottages and shops have also been recreated and are well worth a visit, along with their pretty cottage gardens. Meanwhile, classic car fans will love the impressive 1899 Panhard et Levassor, Norfolk’s oldest working car. Gressenhall Farm is fascinating, too, as it’s home to many rare breed animals, such as Red Poll cattle, Large Black pigs, Norfolk horn sheep and traditional chickens and turkeys. Then there’s the wonderful woodland adventure playground, which has a special section for the under-fives, and plenty of seats for spectating. And when you’ve used up all your energy, you can re-charge your batteries in the Mardlers’ Rest café, which also has an outdoor area for the better weather, before visiting the fabulous gift shop.
