Ben’s interest in F1 Sidecar Racing started in 2006 with a visit to watch a friend participate; it inspired him to buy a 1989 F1 Derbyshire enabling him to try out the sport with family and friends - often spending more time on the grass than on the track!
Justin Sharp is the passenger for Bygrave racing and he has been passengering since 2009. Prior to that he used to race motocross. An interesting fact about Justin is that he was a county tennis player where he played at national level.
In 2007 it was time to get serious and things began to take shape with the purchase of an LCR monoque chassis, team kit, vans and trailers.
In 2009 Justin was introduced to sidecars and in that year he and driver Greg Noble riding a Yamaha TZ750, went on to win the post Classic Championship in 2010.
2008 was a year of steady progress and by 2009 Ben achieved a 3rd overall position in the BMRC Championships as well as the prestigious Young Driver of the Year Award. 2010 saw the involvement of Roger Body with the British Championship, which meant sponsorship deals and fantastic organisation. This was the first official season the class had gained British Championship status and featured in the Thundersport GB Series; it also received television and media exposure on Motors TV. It was also Ben’s first full season at British level with a well-earned 9th position overall. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly a podium finish in the ‘wet’ at Donnington Park. The last two rounds were helped by having Callum Lawson as a replacement passenger who made a really positive difference to the team at the end of the season. Ben continued to work with Callum through 2011 and, with the additional support became a more professional team, resulting in a credible 5th position finish in the British Championships with four 4th place finishes, very narrowly missing out on podium positions on a couple of occasions. August Bank Holiday was a really exciting race with a 5th place finish in the first-ever World GP in Germany. 2012 saw Ben continue to improve with a podium position in the Eastern Airways British Sidecar Championship at Snetterton, where he holds the club lap record. Buildbase BMW ran their own Superbike Team in the BSB Championship. They where the first factory team for some years to support a sidecar outfit and Ben was chosen as the preferred rider and received their sponsorship. 2014 was Ben and Justin’s first season together and they gelled from the off, also with a new sponsor Blue-Group (Machinery). Mid-way through the season at Donington park saw the pairing involved in a high speed crash which had a major effect on their championship but they continued to work hard and managed to finish 12th overall out 27 teams.
In 2011 he moved into the top flight passengering Gary Smith on his F1 where they had a couple of top 6 finishes. 2012 Justin was riding with Liam Abbott, son of 2002 world champion Steve Abbott. They had consistent top ten finishes until midway through the season when a knee ligament injury forced Justin out of action until mid season 2013. On his return, Justin was passenger to John Clark securing four top seven finishes. With an established track history Justin joined the Bygrave Racing in 2014 and this proved to be a successful year. Ben and Justin secured consistent top 5 finishes and competed the Isle of Mann TT with Delta Racing from Austria finishing 15th with an average speed of 107mph. Justin keeps fit by boxing and his training is very intense. Strength, conditioning and aerobic fitness is to a very high level and he now trains with Super Bike trainer Mark Rhodes. So what for the 2015 season? More sponsorship deals secured from Blue, Rix Petroleum, Mashuni.com and Sean Carr Mentoring Bygrave Racing is 2009 World Champion, Ben Birchall. The two teams set off for pre-season testing in March. This year we are very positive with continued focus on improving qualifying times to enable a better position on the grid. Bygrave Racing is undoubtedly well placed to have a dramatic impact on the 2015 season and ultimately to achieve Ben’s goal to be the British and World F1 Sidecar Champion.
