EPIC

Where fantasy and video games meet, there is Epic. In a society where violence is banned, people must settle their disputes in Epic, at the same time as trying to stay alive in order to accumulate wealth and status in both the game world and in reality. Impulsively, Erik creates his new Epic character to be female, and spends all his allocated start-up funds on beauty and attitude for Cindella rather than weapons, but something tells him that this is the way to go. She and his friends’ characters use a succession of unusual methods to save Erik’s father from exile and to challenge Central Allocations, the representatives who run the game, and thus, the society.

Believable and realistic characters take readers through a thoughtprovoking story that juxtaposes a simple life working the land with the technology of a society simultaneously operating in a virtual world.

Frequent turns of events that teens will know are coming but don’t know exactly when and how they will play out keep the story moving along at a steady pace with intrigue and mystery throughout this captivating page-turner. Veins of moral and ethical social situations and decisions provide some great opportunities for discussion.

Well written and engaging, Epic will easily draw in avid readers and video-game players as well as struggling readers with an interest in gaming. Appealing to fans of both fantasy and science fiction, this novel is destined to see limited shelf time.

DAIRY QUEEN

After her father is injured, 15-year-old D.J. Schwenk takes over the lion’s share of work on her family’s small Wisconsin dairy farm. Between milking cows, mucking out the barn, and mowing clover, this erstwhile jock takes on training Brian, the rival high school’s quarterback. A monster crush and a tryout for her own school’s football team ensue. D.J., a charming if slightly unreliable narrator, does a good deal of soul-searching while juggling her grinding work schedule, an uncommunicative family, and a best friend who turns out to be gay.

Savvy readers will anticipate plot turns, but the fun is in seeing each twist through D.J.’s eyes as she struggles with whether she really is, as Brian puts it, like a cow headed unquestioningly down the cattle shoot of life. Wry narration and brisk sports scenes bolster the pacing, and D.J.’s tongue-tied nature and self-deprecating inner monologues contribute to the novel’s many belly laughs. At the end, though, it is the protagonist’s heart that will win readers over.

Dairy Queen will appeal to girls who, like D.J. aren’t “girly-girls” but just girls, learning to be comfortable in their own skins. The football angle may even hook some boys. Fans of Joan Bauer and Louise Rennison will flock to this sweet confection of a first novel, as enjoyable as any treat from the real DQ. Reprinted with permission of Reed Business Information.

THE SAME OLD BLOOD RUSH WITH A NEW TOUCH Reviewed by Gary Lancaster, TeenSpot.com

Record label Fuelled By Ramen hit the jackpot with Cute Is What We Aim For. Their debut album The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch is officially the fastest selling release in the 10-year history of the label…and that’s no mean feat, especially considering the label is home to such heavyweights as Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco and The Academy Is… Described as “The hottest new breakthrough in emo” the band came together in January 2005, driven by the four members desire to cast their own upbeat spin onto modern pop. The band’s demos eventually landed on the desks of Fuelled By Ramen A&R men and the rest, as they say, is history.

The band released The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch last June and it’s evidence enough of why they have been as successful as they have. Its catchy, its toe-tapping, and it’s an album which reminds me of bands in the glory days of the scene.

I’m talking Something Corporate, Fenix TX and even The Starting Line. Poppy, happy, and all round addictive. Exactly what “emo” (if you must call it that) should be.

Cute Is What We Aim For will headline the second stage at the 2007 Give It A Name Festival.

JUST JACK: OVERTONES Reviewed by Abi Winder, TeenSpot.com

You see him on billboards, you hear him on the radio, you even catch him on TV. Who is this man we ask? Just Jack, that’s who. The world wasn’t ready for him in 2004 when he released The Outer Marker, which fell on uninterested ears. But these are different times, with the likes of Jamie T and Mike Skinner setting the standard.

The album opens with “Writer’s Block,” an unusual title considering there are 11 tracks to follow. Just Jack employs his easy-listening rap-style, bursting into song for the chorus.

A combination of dance beats, a guitar and instrumentals make this song an all-round winner, certainly one of the best on the album.

“Starz In Their Eyes,” adds a kind of indie-rock twist to it while “Life Stories” gives the album a kick back in to something worth listening to, with a similar feel to the first couple of tracks on the album. It has soul style to it, mixing calm sounds, two soft backing vocalists with the twist of Jack’s rapping about real life.

Having listened to this album several times, one can be left utterly confused about who Just Jack really is. He goes up and down the emotional ladder in his lyrics, combined with a mixture of dance, soul, indie and classical sounds. In this way, Just Jack can be seen as something new and original. However, we may struggle to enjoy the album as much as we did the first time we listen to it on the fourth or fifth time.

GUITAR HERO 2 Reviewed by Tim Yockey

There’s no questioning the outrageous success the Guitar Hero franchise has garnered since its release for the PS2—a success built mostly from word of mouth. Guitar Hero 2 (GH2), like its predecessor, is a rhythm game set to assorted rock songs. Each difficulty mode varies the number of notes and complexity of each track, while slowly advancing you up a set career mode to reach your ultimate challenge—rocking out to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic Free Bird. The route is fun and inviting to newcomers regardless of real (or air) guitar experience.

GH2 uses a guitar peripheral with five colored frets that correspond to the notes played on the screen. A built-in paddle is used to strum each note on the frets, and a whammy bar adds extra sustain to those wicked guitar solo’s. The controls may be daunting to figure out at first, but after a few tries it’s easy to pick up and you’ll be fretting faster than you can say Psychobilly Freakout! In two-player-mode one person dons the role of lead shredder while a friend can support as bass/rhythm guitar (new for GH2) or go head-to-head to see who’s got more skill.

GH2 for the 360 trumps the PS2 version in regards to the ten extra songs provided for the patient Microsoft fans. In addition to the already staggering list of 64 songs provided, 360 owners now get up to 74 sweet tracks. The songs cover material from bands new and old—Avenged Sevenfold, Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Kansas, Guns N’ Roses, and many more.

While GH2 is a fantastic release worth every penny of the initial investment, the promise of downloadable content for the 360 and enhanced online play can only make the package sweeter. Issues like overpriced downloadable content and hardware problems are at the forefront of the companies revisions to the formula, but if you own an Xbox 360 or PS2 and you haven’t tried this game out, you’re doing yourself an injustice.

DIDDY KONG RACING DS Reviewed by Rob Link

Diddy Kong Racing DS is essentially a glorified remake of the original Diddy Kong Racing for N64. It does boast a slew of features unique to the DS, but the core gameplay stays the same.

Adventure mode is pretty much the same but boss races now have a second scenario which takes advantage of the unique hardware. The local multiplayer mode is quite fun, and accessible because only one game card is needed to host a four player race. More tracks will open as a reward to completing the adventure mode, adding some incentive for N64 veterans to give the campaign a second or third run-through.

The game also sports internet play, allowing six racers to compete in a circuit against each other. One downfall to this mode is that only he who finishes first gets rewarded a point for the race. This leaves the remaining five racers little to compete for, and most drop out mid-circuit.

This package is well rounded, including a hefty adventure mode, many multiplayer unlockables, and a mediocre online segment. Fans of Mario Kart DS will enjoy this title’s distinctive solo mode, but may find themselves back behind the wheel as the Italian plumber in the online arena.

So it’s 9pm, the night before your paper is due in class, and you’re still doing research. What makes it worse, you’re Google search on “sharks” gets you everything from the guy with the fin on his back in the backyard pool to some cheesy science fiction movies about super intelligent sharks bent on eating the whole of humanity (and you start to wonder if they know something we don’t…).

Wouldn’t it be easier if there was a place that contained all the information available about sharks and filters out the articles you are fairly certain your 8-year-old brother wrote. Look no further than Studybuddy.com. Your one-stop-shop for everything homework oriented—from research tools, to a translator, to lessons on basically every topic you could need to know. If that wasn’t enough, it also has an essay helper, that helps you plan out your essay, spell-checks, and does some advanced grammar checking, all in the name of making you a more successful student.

While the smarter searching may be enough to cinch you—those lessons are great to pick up some of those skills that you might not necessarily have had, or topics you might have had problems with. StudyBuddy has a list of topics, from broad to narrow, for you to flush out your issues. For example,

Each topic within StudyBuddy comes with a “Snapshot,” a very concise overview of the topic—each topic also comes with more specific topics—to narrow your search and focus your research. Each one of these “specific topics” also has a snapshot, and again, you guessed it, a more focused list of choices to search. If that wasn’t enough, StudyBuddy then saves every search that you run in your “Backpack,” giving you option to go back to all the articles that you’ve read. That’s especially helpful when you forget to make a citation, and need to trace back to the article.

In addition, the Backpack also has a “share” feature, so that you can share your research with other StudyBuddy users—what better way to help out your classmates than to have a public pool of accessible knowledge about a topic. Or, use it for group projects and each person researches a specific

focus of your topic, and then share all of your research in one big pool.

All-in-all, StudyBuddy is a great resource to help you narrow down a topic, work on writing, learn more about calculus, trigonometry and basically anything else you want to know about. It also helps eliminate the, “I think an 8-year-old wrote this article,” kind of mentality with best matches, and offers a way for you to share all your research with others.

“Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! will pay tribute to Pittsburgh’s glass heritage and showcase the ways artists are using this ‘transformational matter’ to help shape the region’s future,” said Sy Holzer, president of PNC Bank Pittsburgh region and chairman of the Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! leadership committee. “This year-long celebration is estimated to contribute more than $20 million to the local economy and bring nearly 400,000 residents and visitors to experience the Pittsburgh region as never before.”

Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! will include hundreds of cultural events, activities and attractions at more than 50 venues across the region. Some of the most unique glass art in the world will be on display beginning this spring including: CHIHULY AT PHIPPS: GARDENS & GLASS (Opens May 10) This exhibition at Phipps Conservatory fuses the fantastic glass art of Dale Chihuly with Phipps Conservatory’s gardens under glass, offering a unique intersection between nature and art.

ALLURE OF JAPANESE GLASS (May 4 – September 16) The Pittsburgh Glass Center will feature the work of contemporary Japanese artists who practice a full range of glass art methods and techniques. The Pittsburgh Glass Center is also offering ongoing live demonstrations, tours, classes, workshops and lectures.

VIVA VETRO! GLASS ALIVE! VENICE AND AMERICA (May 12 – September 16) This exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art is comprised of 125 works and is the largest exhibition to examine the links between Venetian and American artists over the last 50 years.

METAMORPHOSIS: A CELEBRATION OF THE BEAD (June 1 – July 10) This show at the Senator John Heinz Regional History Center will showcase work done by some of the most noted glass beadmakers.

Along with these exhibitions, there will be glass displays and collections showcased throughout the year at several prominent galleries including the Morgan Contemporary Glass Gallery, James Gallery and Concept Gallery. There will also be glass-focused events and artistic performances that will be held at area theatres, historical centers, churches, parks, universities, museums and exhibit halls.

“Pittsburgh is widely recognized as one of the country’s centers for the arts,” said Ken Melani, M.D., president and chief executive officer, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, and vice chair of the Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! leadership team. “Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! is an opportunity to showcase the important role that arts and culture play in our community.”

In June 2007, downtown Pittsburgh will shine during a premier artistic lighting event by noted French artist Lucette de Rugy, president of Artlumiere. Buildings throughout the city will be illuminated like never seen before, creating another reason for people to come downtown and enjoy the great performance art, galleries, restaurants and activities.

Other unique Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! events occurring throughout the year will include: THERMAN STATOM: IMAGINE GLASS (May) One of the most famous contemporary glass artists will work with youth from Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, The Neighborhood Academy and other schools to teach the principles of glass art, and nurture creativity and pride. Therman will transform downtown Pittsburgh’s Fifth Avenue Place from a storefront to a temporary glass studio for use by area youth.

“I’m glad to work with Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! to provide local youth a unique opportunity to not only learn about the principles of glass art, but, more importantly, discover their creativity by working together to create a one-of-a-kind piece of glass art,” said Therman Statom.

In addition to the various art projects and exhibitions throughout the year, Pittsburgh will be hosting the 37th annual Glass Art Society Conference. Entitled “Transformational Matter,” the conference (June 7 – 9) will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and will include lectures and demonstrations of blownglass skills as well as flame-worked glass, cast glass and flat glass techniques, not to mention tours of local museums, exhibitions, glass factories, collectors’ homes and the architectural gems of the Pittsburgh region—much of which is open to the public.

“The activities that make up Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! present tremendous opportunities to promote the Pittsburgh region as a vibrant cultural hub and to engage residents and visitors in our region’s vast array of arts, cultural and entertainment offerings,” said Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato.

> NOT A TYPICAL SCIENCE LESSON In science class, SiO2 is the chemical formula for silica or silicon dioxide otherwise known as sand. It is used as raw material for the production of glass.

At Pittsburgh Glass Center, SiO2 is a free 12-week program for high school students, one of only a few of its kind in the U.S. SiO2 students learn about the science, art and history of glass and answer questions like: Why is gravity great for glassblowers? Who is Dale Chihuly? When was Pittsburgh the center of all glass production in the U.S.?

It’s a full day of lessons packed into a three-hour afternoon, but there’s more.

Forget sitting in a classroom. SiO2 takes place in one of the top glass studios in the U.S. Located in the East End, Pittsburgh Glass Center is a state-of-the-art glass studio with a furnace full of molten glass at 2,200°. SiO2 students have the rare opportunity to learn to create glass art with hands-on experience at the furnace, blowing and sculpting beginning on the first day! Each week, students work in the studio with a team of other high school students often beside world-renowned glass artists to create studio glass art. At the end of the 12-week session, SiO2 students display their glass art in an exhibition at Pittsburgh Glass Center.

Pittsburgh Glass Center runs two 12-week sessions each year beginning in January and September. To apply for SiO2, students must complete an application, submit one letter of reference and images of their art. No experience is necessary and all materials are provided.

COLLEGE SELECTION GETS SMART More than one million students enter college each year and many schools are finding smart new ways to find the best of the bunch.

Once accepted, students will take courses that build upon each other, culminating in a cohesive body of knowledge.

For instance, a growing number of colleges now focus on the student as a whole—as opposed to test scores—when making admission decisions.

“We seek to inspire a lifelong passion for knowledge and a commitment to take ideas seriously,” said Dr. Gary Hull, the college’s chairman and chief executive officer, “and we emphasize the thinking and communication skills that students will need to pursue success in any profession or graduate program.”

Analysts say the approach can result in a better rounded education and often a better match between student and college.

For instance, Founders College in South Boston, Virginia, slated to open its doors in 2007, has said that student Scholastic Aptitude (SAT) and Advanced Placement (AP) test scores will not be considered during the admissions process.

Instead, the residential liberal arts and business college will evaluate applications by reference to a student’s context of knowledge, thinking and writing skills, essay, maturity level and motivation.

“We prize effective teaching methods and great teachers,” Hull said. “Instructors will focus on inspiring and fostering the intellect of students, as well as providing the finest education in essential liberal arts subjects.”

THE ROLE OF FACULTY While certain test scores may not affect students applying to the school, the faculty aren’t so lucky.

A FRESH LOOK AT PAGEANTS Pageants today have evolved beyond bathing suits and high heels, lipstick and hairspray, and catch phrases like “world peace.” Pageants in 2007 present opportunities for young women to come together for numerous positive reasons. For some, it’s the idea of friendship and fellowship. For others, it might be scholarship and networking prospects.

Often, young women want to try something different or exciting; many simply want to get dressed up, and to have a moment to shine onstage in front of their families and friends. The Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA Pageant provides the chance for them to do so…and so much more.

Pageants can be a rewarding occasion for the thousands of young women who participate in competitions; however, some may not understand who the Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA Pageant truly reflects. Today’s contestants are a diverse group who represent many cross-sections within our culture. For example, most of our teen contestants embody your average teenager—they like to participate in school activities, hang out with friends, and they are often very active in their communities. Some are athletes, some are artists, and some are avid shoppers. Almost every single participant puts on their application that they like to chat online with friends and talk on the phone. These typical teens come together and have a great time during pageant weekend, going home with a fun new experience under their belts, along with many new friends from all over the state to boot.

The young women participating in our pageant come in all races, ages, shapes and sizes. The competition is broken down into three areas: interview, evening gown and swimsuit competitions. These

areas are often structured to assess a young woman’s confidence, grace, poise and overall physical fitness.

Judges are specifically instructed not to take into account the cost of a young woman’s evening gown, or whether she is built like a model in a fashion magazine. Instead, the judges are looking for a girl with confidence who carries herself with pride—a young woman who lights up the room when she enters. They are also looking for a teen who can be a positive role model for other teenagers, and a person other young ladies can relate to.

We found an exceptional young woman who identifies well with other teens in our current titleholder, Kelsie Sinagra. The current Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA 2007 is a teenager already looking to her future, planning to earn a degree in secondary education and become a high school social science or history teacher. A well-rounded teen, Kelsie is involved with ski club, track and field, and is a member of the yearbook staff at her school. She also currently serves as an advocate for the prevention of drunk driving, working as an avid volunteer for SADD. Once a young woman becomes Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA, her world becomes filled with new and exciting opportunities. Actually, a year in the life of a titleholder may not be what some people might expect. While our titleholders have been known to appear in a parade or two, they spend much more of their time advocating the opinions and concerns of other young women they represent. They also spend countless hours giving back to their communities in numerous ways. Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA speaks to other teenagers in schools about issues such as drug and alcohol

awareness, anti-bullying, promoting self-esteem, and encouraging teens to pursue a college education.

She also spends much of her time promoting nonprofit organizations through volunteerism at charity events. Some of our titleholders have also had the chance to play a role in red carpet and VIP events.

Many have used the networking opportunities they’ve made during their year of service as a stepping stone to launch careers in news and sports journalism, business, law, medicine, acting and modeling and numerous other fields.

The experiences young women gain from competing in pageants allows them to build selfconfidence by practicing their interactions with the media and the general public. Many women utilize pageant competitions as a way to get their opinions heard and to become more empowered in their local communities and even on a national level.

The young women who compete in the Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA Pageant today are intelligent, ambitious and confident, with much more to offer the world than an old-fashioned concept of beauty.

Where do you attend high school and what activities are you involved in?

I’m currently a senior at North Hills High School where I am the varsity track team manager, as well as a member of the yearbook staff.

What are your plans after high school?

I’m proud to say that I will be a student at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania this September where I will receive my degree in Secondary History Education.

What are your favorite things about where you live?

I’m a sports fanatic which works out wonderfully since Pittsburgh is such a huge sports town with the best fans anyone could imagine! I also love how genuine and kind most people around town are. I couldn’t imagine growing up elsewhere!

When did you become interested in pageants?

When I was thirteen years old I entered a small state pageant on a whim. I had no idea what to expect but surprised myself by placing seventh out of the 81 contestants! I had a great experience and enjoyed the company of the other girls so much that I’ve been competing in pageants ever since!

What are some of your responsibilities as Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA 2007?

With the title comes the responsibility of representing the aspirations of young women, as well as helping out various charities and organizations throughout the state. I also get the privilege of traveling with the Miss Teen USA 2007 Pageant!

Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?

My mom has always been the person I try to model myself after. She has a really outgoing personality, and I’ve always said that if I’m able to be as fun as she is when I’m a mother then mission accomplished. And, not only do we look alike, but I’m often told we act alike as well!

What advice would you offer to other young women interested in pageantry?

If a young lady has any interest in pageantry then I would say go for it! Through my experiences I’ve realized that the negative stereotypes of pageant contestants are

almost entirely non-existent. Pageants offer an immense boost of self esteem and confidence to all the young ladies involved. Regardless of how you place, it’s guaranteed you will walk away with many new friends, a renewed sense of self worth, and extremely proud parents and family members…not to mention how fun it is to feel like a supermodel for a day or two!

What is the best and worst part of being Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA 2007?

It’s honestly extremely difficult to find any negatives in being Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA. It’s rewarding on so many levels. Every event I attend I seem to meet someone with a new piece of inspiring advice to offer, and it’s truly amazing to have the ability to make a little girl’s day simply by talking to her and taking a couple pictures together. This year has helped me to develop socially, mentally, and physically while providing me with life changing opportunities. The only downside I can think of is having to force myself to resist a chocolate sundae every once in a while!

What was the last good movie you saw?

The best movie I’ve seen in a while is Blades of Glory.

Will Ferrel is one of my favorite actors, and I love walking out of a movie theater feeling like I just did 300 sit-ups from laughing so hard. It’s a winner all around!

Have you seen Little Miss Sunshine?

I have seen Little Miss Sunshine. I think it depicts pageantry as something it’s really not, but only in order to convey the overall moral of the story. It’s an adorable movie that everyone in a family can learn something from. I enjoyed it!

What's in your iPod right now?

My favorite guys in the world…Toby Keith, Dierks Bentley, Josh Turner, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, and Rascal Flatts! I’m a country girl at heart! But of course there’s also the love of my life, Justin Timberlake!

What are you most passionate about?

Friendships and just learning from others in general. I think, as individuals, we are all unique and have much good to offer to one another that we should really take advantage of it more. Meeting new people and building bonds with them is something I truly value a lot in life.

Describe a learning experience that changed your life.

In the summer of 2005 I managed to save up enough money to travel to Europe for two weeks with several of my best friends. The part of the trip that had the most impact on me was walking through the barracks of a German concentration camp. I had seen many pictures in school from the Holocaust, but it was just astonishing to witness an area where so much devastation had once occurred. The entire trip as a whole helped me to realize how precious the world is, and really gave me a thirst to experience many different cultures and religions in my lifetime.

Who is your personal hero?

I don’t have one specific famous actress or historian I consider my hero. Rather, I just like to admire certain qualities of people as well as those who have the most impact on my life…my family and friends!

What scares you?

Well aside from my extremely random phobia of eels, my only real fear is not experiencing enough while I’m young and healthy. That’s why I do my very best to stay in shape and hopefully prolong my health so I can enjoy traveling all over the world in the future.

What are your interests outside of school?

Seeing as it is my senior year in high school I’ve been really focused on cherishing the time I have left with my peers. I’ve known some of my best friends since we were four years old, and cannot believe we’ll finally be heading separate ways! I spend a lot of time with my girls hanging out, attending each other’s sporting events, and my personal favorite…playing Dance Dance Revolution for hours! Other than that, I keep myself busy as a hostess part time, and fulfilling duties as Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA. Do you have any advice for your fellow peers?

These are going to be some of the best years of our life, so embrace them…safely! And most importantly, pay close attention to the feelings of others around you. The only feeling better than receiving something yourself is the satisfaction you receive by giving to others. It may sound cheesy, but I promise it’s true!

The duo attended the Edwin O. Smith High School prom in formalwear that took them five months of hard work, including 230 individual designs and more than 25 rolls of duct tape to create. Having followed the contest for five years, Nelson was inspired by a fascination with traditional Cambodian court dance attire. Her dress combined color and texture, and was highlighted by a unique embroidery pattern at the base of the bodice, which was created from a colorful combination of rolled “threads” of duct tape.

Not to be out-done, Xu matched his date’s creativity with a sleek black suit that included a textured cross-over jacket with a broad shoulder design and traditional black pants – both decorated with a unique embroidery pattern complementing his date’s dress.

The couple said the outfits were extremely hot and heavy, and given time to reflect, they would have added ventilation holes to Xu’s suit. But, the attention received at the dance and the time they spent together made it all worthwhile.

“We had a blast at prom, and the feeling afterwards was exhilarating,” said Xu. Beyond being a focal point at prom, Nelson was also crowned prom queen.

“I couldn’t believe the attention we got, and I was so excited when they called my name for prom queen,” said Nelson.

This is not an uncommon problem. Teenage skin, which is highly prone to acne breakouts, can become ultra sensitive and extremely reactive to topical overthe-counter products.

SO WHAT’S A TEENAGER TO DO? Just because a product worked for you last week or last month doesn’t mean it will work for you forever!

Over-the-counter products are not acne cures; they are merely temporary remedies that help you to control your acne.

BEING OVERLY PICKY You’ve heard it a million times, “Don’t pick your pimples”. Everyone picks now and then, but if you find you are excessively picking or scratching your zits, you may have a condition called Acne Excoriee. Your physician can help; there are medications available that treat the uncontrollable desire to pick.

GOING DOWN THE DRAIN Remember to wash your face after you shampoo and condition your hair. Why? Because there are ingredients in shampoos and conditioners that may not just be going down the drain but may also be aggravating your skin and your acne. Wash your face after you clean your hair to remove any residue.

WHEN TO SEE A PROFESSIONAL? • If you are having trouble controlling your acne • If your blemishes are painful to the touch • If your blemishes feel deeply embedded in your skin • If your skin is extremely irritated • If the overall appearance of your skin is inflamed WHO, WHAT AND WHERE? Your first line of action would be to seek the help of a highly trained esthetician who specializes in the treatment of acne.

An esthetician is trained in the field of esthetic skincare (to beautify the skin). The esthetician will deeply cleanse and exfoliate your skin. She may perform a technique called extractions; a procedure in which she will gently remove blackheads and whiteheads from your skin to facilitate the healing process. An esthetician may work in a day spa, a beauty salon, a physician’s office or a medical spa.

Medical estheticians are estheticians who are affiliated with physicians, usually either a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist. They may work in the doctor’s office or in a medical spa. Medical estheticians generally have more clinical training and advanced education in skincare and acne, but not always, so check her credentials and ask about her education and advanced training. She too will deeply cleanse and exfoliate your skin, and may also perform extractions.

But she can offer you more advanced acne treatments and hence more effective treatments because she is under the supervision of a physician.

THERE’S THE RUB Stay away from wearing hats, or wearing headbands that directly rub against your forehead, this will irritate the skin and can exacerbate your acne condition.

MAKE-UP YOUR MIND Never go to bed wearing your makeup.

Keep your make-up brushes clean by washing them once a week and look for make-up that’s specifically designed for acne prone skin.

ACNE TIPS

Your esthetician will evaluate your skin and tailor the treatment to your specific needs. She may perform a microdermabrasion treatment or a chemical exfoliation.

THE NATIONAL ANTHEM PROJECT CELEBRATES MUSIC EDUCATION The National Anthem Project, a multiyear national campaign to reteach the words and significance of the national anthem and spotlight the importance of school music education, will culminate on Flag Day, June 14, 2007, with thousands of music students from across the country singing the national anthem at the Sylvan Theater on the Washington Monument Grounds in Washington, D.C. This effort is led by MENC: The National Association for Music Education.

MENC conducted a recent Harris Poll that found that two out of three Americans don't know the words to our national anthem, which is due in part to budget cuts to music programs. Kids learn songs of our history and heritage in school, and without these essential music programs, they may never learn the words or significance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

This multiyear campaign included a grassroots mobile marketing tour, The National Anthem Project Road Show. The tour launched on January 3, 2006 at the Orange Bowl in Miami and continued for 10 months, culminating in New York City on October 22, 2006. The Road Show stopped in 48 states and 62 cities, educating parents, community members and government officials on the importance of music education and our national anthem.

The tour reached more than 436,000 people across the country.

On June 14th, the culmination celebration of The National Anthem Project will include a record-breaking rendition of the national anthem performed by thousands of citizens and students from around the nation to celebrate the success of the project and the importance of music education. The festivities will also include a concert by “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. On June 15th, these music students will be singing other patriotic songs at various monuments on the National Mall. The National Anthem Project will conclude on June 16th in Annapolis, Maryland, where Drum Corps International will kick off its season with a concert of the most talented drum corps from around the country.

Where are you from originally?

I was born and raised in Lawrence, KS. It’s a small town, but also a university town so it was a fun place to grow up. Go Jayhawks! My parents still live there on a fiveacre farm just outside of the city. I love to go back to visit and get away from the city. I was very fortunate to grow up with lots of animals, outside activities and endless curiosity. I never spent summers in front of the TV. What are your favorite things about where you live?

I love the art scene in Pittsburgh. It is small enough that it really feels like a community and you can really get to know people and yet there is such a diversity of things to do and see. I also love all the parks, rivers and trails here in western Pennsylvania, but I wish I had more time to explore them.

What were your favorite classes in high school?

Definitely art classes—drawing, painting, photography.

I was so lucky to have an amazing art teacher in High School, Ms. Nemchock. She literally changed my life. I hope everyone gets to have at least one teacher like that.

What did you study in school?

I started out in undergrad as an architecture major but ended up graduating with a degree in glass. It is funny because everyone asks how I ended up being a glassblower—it isn’t exactly the job most kids say they want to have when they grow up. I took a class when I was a freshman and just feel in love with the material. I changed my major by the end of the year.

What inspired you to work with glass?

I really didn’t know what to expect the first time I took a class, but there is something about glass that is just amazing. First of all, it’s a very challenging material to work with and I loved that challenge. However, what I ended up finding was that you really have to work with the glass in order to produce your desired results.

It isn’t a material you can fight with and force to do what you want, you have to coax it into being. A lot of people describe glass as addicting, which I would agree with. Once you have worked with the material it just seems to draw you back in.

What advice would you give to young people pursuing a career in your field?

Go for it. I remember lots of people asking me “what are you going to do with a degree in art”, but I didn’t let it stop me. Yes, it might be more practical to get a degree in engineering, but if you wake up everyday and hate your job then what’s the point? If you’re passionate and determined you will find a way to make it doing what you love, so don’t let anyone discourage you.

How long have you been working in this field?

I have been blowing glass since 1998, so I guess about 9 years. It seems really hard to believe and even as I answered that question it hit me that it sure doesn’t seem like it has been that long! Of those nine years, five have been spent working at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, which I love.

What does your typical work day consist of?

Well, I would have to say that I don’t have a “typical” work day. That is also one of the best parts of the job.

I never have to do exactly the same thing two days in a row. I have spent the last two weeks (with the help of an amazing staff at PGC) unpacking crates with glass artwork from Japan. Our new exhibition, Allure of Japanese Glass, opens in May, so I have been very busy installing that show. It was quite an exciting process to open all the crates, unpack all the work and then arrange the work in the exhibition—this is the first time PGC has hosted an international exhibition.

What is the best and worst part of your job?

The worst part easily is that it never seems like I have enough time to get everything done that needs to be done. I just wish days were about 3 hours longer—then I am pretty sure I would be all set. The best part is getting to work with other artists, instructors and students.

I get to make plans for the Pittsburgh Glass Center’s exhibitions and residencies and work with artists to help them create new work. It is pretty cool to get to imagine an exhibition and then see it come to fruition a year or two later.

What was the last good movie you saw?

I have been in graduate school for the last year, so I haven’t gotten to watch as many movies as I would like lately. But, I would have to say that the last movie I saw that I really loved was Stranger Than Fiction.

I love Will Ferrell in general and that was such a great movie with an all-star cast. Plus, it made me smile.

Describe a learning experience that changed your life.

Even though I am from a small town I was fortunate enough to travel a lot as a child. My dad is a university professor, so he would go on sabbatical every couple of years, so we would pack up and head to the Netherlands or England for a semester. I am so grateful, looking back, that my parents instilled a love of travel in me and a curiosity to explore other cultures. I think that it has made me a more tolerant and accepting person. In 2001, right after September 11th, I headed to Vietnam for a trip that had been planned for months. I was amazed by the outpouring of support of people all over the country when they found out I was an American. People came up to me on the street who barely spoke English to say they were sorry for our loss.

It just made me realize all the good things in people and how connected we all are in this great big world.

What are your interests outside of work?

I love to work with my hands and lately I have been restoring the 1910 Arts and Crafts home that my husband and I own in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Morningside. It’s so much fun to bring back it’s original character. It has the most amazing woodwork and stained glass windows. Restoring it has been the ultimate art project over the last few years.

If your life had a title, what would it be?

“I think we might be lost.”

FORCED FUNERAL BY AMANDA MARCH, PITTSBURGH, PA

She told me to pull her phalange.

I told her she was deranged.

She was here for the commemoration of saucers, but I didn’t really know why I was there.

She accused me of espionage when I refused to obey.

No one needed them anymore, so they were taken away.

“You don’t understand,” she spat.

I warned her not to get caught up in the excitement of a forced funeral.

It was never about the saucers.

“Human existence is all about wanting something that you have no need for,” she whispered.

Her clavicles were dainty, symmetrically intimidating.

Disarming, even.

I thought they were brilliant.

I considered telling her so, but I was supposed to be the sane one.

I didn’t belong among the infamous beings who gather at funerals for saucers.

I watched as she walked towards the open casket, kneeling, pretending to pray.

She left with her pocket in a circular shape.

Didn’t she understand saucers were futile?

She moved slinkily back to my side.

In her presence I felt velvety and unpretentious, yet confined, next to someone so willing to risk.

Her demeanor never changed, as she dreamily watched them bury the closest thing coffee mugs had to socks.

And I tried to maintain my normal demeanor as her hand became the closest thing I had to gloves.

IT CAN HAPPEN AGAIN BY JULIE MILLER, HICKORY, PA

I am sure that most all of you know or have known of someone that has died in a car accident. It’s not an easy thing to deal with. I am no different, I had to face a loss when I was 13 years old. My cousin, Matt Bauchman was 16 years old on his way home from a school dance when a car accident claimed his life. That was one of the hardest times in my life. I honestly thought that nothing like that would ever happen to me again.

Now, I am a 17-year-old junior attending Bishop Canevin High School. Recently I’ve had to face the tragedy again. My friend Zach died in a car accident on November 23, 2006—Thanksgiving morning. He was speeding and drove his car into the back of truck. Both my friend’s car and the truck burst into flames. Zach died at the scene from blunt force trauma to the chest. He lost his life in an accident involving excessive speed. I know Zach never thought that he would loose his life in an accident.

Zach would always say, “don’t worry I’ll be careful…I know what I am doing.” Now it is too late, he is gone.

This was my wake up call. Bad things do happen more than once no matter what your age.

Speeding does, can, and will kill you. So save your life or someone else’s, don’t speed. You may not believe so but no matter how fast you go, speeding will catch you and the accident that you most often pass by could be yours.

1909–1971

“Take me out to the ball game, Take me out with the crowd; Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack, I dont care if I never get back” With the coming of another spring, hope springs eternal in the hearts of baseball fans across America, as ballparks all over the nation reopen to welcome back fans of America’s pastime. It’s a time when the young and old alike can follow their favorite teams runs throughout the summer months. Baseball often harkens back to a bygone era of America, and probably no sport has as much nostalgia associated with it as baseball. Past ballplayers and records are revered, and in many ways, the current game is secondary to the glorious history of the sport. Included in this are not just the players, but also the ballparks where the game is

played. Walking into Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, or Yankee Stadium is like taking a step back in America’s history. Some of the classic ballparks, such as the Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field, and the Union Grounds, have faded from memory, but will always be remembered as places where baseball became part of the fabric of America.

One of these ballparks was Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1909 to 1970. Forbes Field was the Pirates third home, replacing the old Exposition Park which hosted the team from 1891 to 1908. Despite hosting the first World Series, played in 1903, Exposition Park was not viewed as a suitable ballpark for a major league team. Its outfield was so huge only 11 home runs were ever hit in its history, and a July 4th flood of the Allegheny River in 1902 rendered the park unusable for baseball until the water receded.

More importantly, however, Exposition Field had capacity for just 16,000 fans, and Forbes Field allowed the Pirates to pack in larger audiences to watch games, and thus, make more money from ticket sales. Forbes Field opened on June 30, 1909 as one of the first steel-and-concrete parks in

America. Named after General John Forbes, a British commander in the French and Indian War that helped name the region “Pittsburg”, it cost one million dollars to build and would eventually earn the nickname “The House of Thrills.” That year the Pirates won their first World Series, as Honus Wagner led the team in defeating Ty Cobb’s Detroit Tigers, and the Pirates were able to fit more fans in Forbes Field in the three series games played at the stadium than attended the entire World Series the previous two years. Forbes Field could hold 25,000 fans (expanded to 35,000 in 1938).

The park was built in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, the cultural and educational hub of the city, with the help of industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who placed the park next to his Carnegie Library and Carnegie Institute of Technology (the forerunner of today’s Carnegie Mellon University), as well as near Schenley Park. Over the years, it became a home to some of Pittsburgh’s most famous ballplayers, from Wagner to Waner to Kiner to Clemente. Forbes Field was not just the home of the Pirates, however. From 1939 to 1948 Forbes Field also hosted the Homestead Grays, a famous

Negro League Team. Even the Pittsburgh Steelers football team also called Forbes Field home for their first thirty years of existence, until they moved into nearby Pitt Stadium in 1963. Known as a haven of triples, and not particularly friendly towards home runs (for its final 24 years, the park’s dimensions were shortened to 300’ to right, 457’ to center and 365’ to left), Forbes Field is nevertheless probably best remembered for two famous home runs hit on its grass. Babe Ruth hit the last three home runs of his ilistrous career in Forbes Field. The last one became the first to ever clear the double-deck grandstand in right field. More memorable, in the 1960 World Series, Pirates Hall of Fame second baseman Bill Mazeroski got to live out every boy’s childhood fantasy when he hit the game winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of game seven to win the series for Pittsburgh, the only time a series has been ended in such dramatic fashion.

Eventually, however, the Pirates would move out of Forbes Field. The neighboring University of Pittsburgh acquired the stadium from the Pirates in 1958, and wished to demolish the stadium to use the land for academic buildings. The Pirates, too, also

saw a brighter future by abandoning the stadium, and in 1970, left Forbes Field for Three Rivers Stadium, built in nearly the same location as the team’s old home, Exposition Park. On July 28th, 1971, Forbes Field was demolished, and a piece of Pittsburgh, and baseball history was gone forever.

Although Three Rivers Stadium saw the Pirates return to glory in the 1970’s by winning the World Series in 1971 and 1979 (along with the success of the Steelers and the Pittsburgh Panthers in the decade, they helped give Pittsburgh the nickname “The City of Champions”) and allowed the team to offer night games (the first night game of a World Series was played in Three Rivers in 1971) and have a greater seating capacity, fans never fell in love with Three Rivers. Like so many other multipurpose cement stadiums built in the 1970’s, it placed an emphasis on utility over aesthetics. Fans finally got their wish in 2001, when Pittsburgh opened PNC Park, modeled on the “old time” ballparks in America.

Finally, baseball fans in Pittsburgh felt they had returned to the days and times of Forbes Field.

And what of Forbes Field? The Pirates spent more time at that ballpark (61 years) than they ever

have at any of their other homes. Today visitors to Pittsburgh can still see some parts of the old park.

The wall where Mazeroski hit his game winning home run still stands, covered in ivy, and every October 13th (the anniversary of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series), Pirates fans still gather at the site to listen to a tape of the radio broadcast of the hit. Home Plate is located beneath plexiglass inside of Wesley Posvar Hall (formerly known as the Forbes Quadrangle) on the university’s campus. Its original location put it square in the middle of a men’s room, so it was slightly moved to be out in the main hallway of the building. Bricks on Pitt’s campus trace the dimensions of the park, one of the most beloved in baseball history, and one which will always live in the memory of Pirates fans young and old.
