HOOPS OF STEEL

Jackson’s senior year of high school is overshadowed by something that happened at home during his junior year. His family has since split up, with his dad moving to California and his mother moving his sister to a nearby town.

Jackson is fortunate to have Granny, who opens her home to him even though they are not really related. He also has basketball and, like every high school player, he hopes he can parley his talent into a college scholarship. His love for basketball and the Zen feeling he gets when shooting baskets sees him through anger and depression whenever it creeps up on him.

In the wealthy community of Highland where Jackson lives, he has no friends except Granny, but in neighboring Midland, he finds a group of friends on the basketball court. His school year is rough and it gets rougher. His Midland friends are there to support him and Jackson finds that he can offer his own support when needed. In spite of mistakes that shatter his self-confidence on and off the basketball court, Jackson learns to follow his heart.

Hoops of Steel is a different kind of sports novel. It’s not predictable and the ending doesn’t go where you might expect. The characters are rich and well-drawn except for Granny whose backstory—and reasons for taking in a troubled teenager—aren’t mentioned.

SCARY STORIES ILLUSTRATED BY BARRY MOSER Reviewed by Lyn Seippel, BookLoons.com

Scary Stories is a compilation of stories written by the stars of horror—Edgar Alan Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Stephen King, Brams Stoker and Dean Koontz—coupled with other outstanding writers who offer new aspects of their craft.

Classics such as Poe’s Tell-Tale Heart, and Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery bump up against Winston Churchill’s Man Overboard and The Furnished Room by O. Henry. Kittens by Dean Koontz gives a good reason not to lie to a child.

John Carrington’s Wedding by E. Nesbit presents love beyond the grave. And in Man Overboard, Winston Churchill’s character falls into the ocean, where he realizes that death by drowning isn’t the worst way to go.

While these well-read stories have all been printed elsewhere, having them in one volume is a treat. Barry Moser interprets them in chilling, black and white wood engravings.

THE HUSH SOUND: LIKE VINES reviewed by Gary Lancaster, TeenSpot.com

The Hush Sound are the latest band to hail from the ever-exploding Chicago music scene which is rapidly becoming known for producing some of today’s best underground bands. Take, for example, Fall Out Boy, who The Hush Sound actually have quite a lot of thanks to offer. You see, without FOB, or more specifically Pete Wentz, it’s likely that The Hush Sound would still be label-less, and subsequently distribution-less. For The Hush Sound, their signing to FBR imprint Decaydance, marks the beginning of a new era, with a new album and, importantly, a new single to boot.

“Wine Red,” the first single off Like Vines, is a punchy yet mellow piano based track with a melody which resonates from mourningful beginnings, yet is laced with a real sense of hope. Seemingly, a perfect choice to showcase the bands album, which incorporates a diverse collection of tracks. The band have created a catchy and tuneful sound, sometimes quirky, often haunting yet delicate and the female vocals are crucial in this mix. Colored with imagery evoking lyrics reflecting on personal life experience and hardship, their songs have individual characters…yet, they are unified by a certain flair that is, The Hush Sound.

BILLY TALENT: BILLY TALENT II Reviewed by Gary Lancaster, TeenSpot.com

Renowned for the sheer energy of their live shows, Billy Talent have slowly but surely converted rock fans worldwide to their unique but accessible blend of explosive poppunk anthems and boisterous riffs. After a decade of hard work and nearly non-stop touring, Billy Talent broke through in to the punk mainstream with their eponymous debut album (self titled) in 2003, spawning such hits as the infections “Try Honesty.”

The album went on to become triple platinum in Canada with success growing hastily across Europe and the US. A far stretch from their Pezz days, they’ve gone from pop-punk obscurity to headlining 2,500 people venues halfway across the world in three years. Now that’s not bad going, and Billy Talent II is a prime example of how they’ve achieved it. If you haven’t checked ‘em out yet, make sure you do. This is a ridiculously catchy album—reminiscent of Goldfinger—and will have your foot tapping for sure.

“Fallen Leaves,” the third single to be taken from the critically acclaimed second album, tells the dark story of a friends’ drug addiction. The song sees the band take a more melodic approach whilst retaining their signature upbeat, rowdy choruses.

WARIOWARE: SMOOTH MOVES Reviewed by Rob Link

WarioWare: Smooth Moves is the latest installment in the zany WarioWare series by Nintendo. The series is known for its ridiculously fast pace, and Smooth Moves is no exception. The basic idea of these games relies on the player being able to complete a minigame within three to five seconds.

At first thought, that seems like a short-lived and entertainment-lacking experience. However, once the player completes the minigame, another is thrown at them. And another. And another. This process continues until the player looses all their “lives” by not completing minigames.

The functionality of the Wii’s unique remote may be most prominently displayed in Smooth Moves. As the title implies, this is a game that requires a wide variety of motions and gestures that all build up to a very gratifying game play experience. One minigame will have you hula-hooping, and a few seconds later, you may find yourself holding the remote like a cup and pretending to drink from it. At the beginning of each and every game, a screen quickly appears instructing you how to hold the remote in preparation for the upcoming task. Approximately twelve different configurations exist and the narrations explaining each position will have you laughing hysterically.

Smooth Moves makes a great party game, including multiplayer support for up to twelve players. Each player is represented with their custom Mii character, which is stored on the Wii system memory. A single Wii remote is used in multiplayer and is passed around between players, allowing for a lot of time to laugh at your friends as they hold the remote on top of their head. The crazy uses of the controller further separates the Wii from it’s competitors as you will find a game like this on no other platform. The WarioWare games are definitely in a category all their own.

PHOENIX WRIGHT: ACE ATTORNEY JUSTICE FOR ALL Reviewed by Rob Link

Justice For All for the DS is the sequel to 2005’s Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. The games (a huge hit in their native Japan) revolve around a rookie defense attorney on his mission to help the innocent. The Japanese name for the series, Gyakuten Saiban (which roughly translates to “Turnabout Court”), is a fitting title. In each case, the player attempts to prevent the defendant from attaining a guilty verdict and then discovers the true culprit through the use of evidence.

Two main types of gameplay alternate throughout the four separate cases. Investigation—a firstperson perspective—has you examine the crime scenes while encountering many colorful characters that usually reveal clues as to uncovering the murderer. The other type of gameplay takes place during the trials. As defense attorney, you will cross-examine witness testimonies in hopes of revealing lies. However, you have to be able to back up claims with evidence typically gained through the investigative segments.

The appeal of the Phoenix Wright series is in solving a case and revealing the true murderer.

For those that enjoy suspense novels and movies, this game will suit the bill.

How many of us have been sitting on the computer in the library, annoyed that the system administrator has AIM blocked, as well as Yahoo! Messenger, MSN and even you’re Google chat? My guess would be most of us. Well, your screams of instant messenger withdrawal woes have not gone unheard. In fact, not only have you been heard, but your ideas improved upon and consolidated. Thus, the glory that is meebo.com was born.

Not blocked by most system administrators (including my own), Meebo offers unparalleled instant messenger across all brands from anywhere you have an internet connection. That’s right, meebo recreates not only AIM, but also Yahoo!, MSN and ICQ all on a single website that you can access anywhere.

Being an avid AIM user myself, I naturally jumped on and tested my personal screen name, and was expecting something similar to AIM express. I was wrong. Oh so wrong. The Meebo version of AIM is almost exactly like the actual client that you would download off the website. With increased functionality over AIM express, including easier on the eyes layout, message windows that stay inside the window,

cutting down on the multitudes of conspicuous blinking bars at the bottom of your screen, there seems be little reason to actually use AIM express.

Additionally, Meebo incorporates the displaying of away messages in your buddy list—as well as away status, idle status and the ever impressive idle while away status. You also have the ability to not only message your friends, but in addition you can also start a chat-room. The windows are much sleeker, and support user defined fonts and colors.

Easily, the most unique aspect of Meebo would be the ability to create “widgets.” A widget is essentially a chat window you can embed on any webpage— be that your myspace.com, your personal home page, an auction or wherever you can add a bit of code, which Meebo generates for you. Using a user name that you create specifically with Meebo, you are notified when someone goes to a website with a widget embedded, and you can choose to talk to

them, or they can message you. The possibilities are endless.

Meebo, having no software to actually download, has the potential the change the face of instant messaging as we know it, and of course, to kill productivity. The ability to embed widgets means that you can talk to anyone, anytime, from any website. The future of instant messaging is here, and it is meebo.

Have you ever wondered how helicopters work? Did you know that humans can re-grow fingers? Wonder no farther than Howstuffworks.com. This website is dedicated to answer those “I wonder how…” questions that we’ve all had. Where did the Sith come from? How do stars work? All of this is in the archive of obscure knowledge one can find on Howstuffworks.com.

There’s a plethora of knowledge to be had on this website, but it does have it’s down sides. At first glance, the website is cluttered. You’re here looking for information and you get bombarded with information from the get-go. Logistically speaking, the site isn’t designed very well, but if you’re looking to stumble upon something accidentally, this is the site for you.

It should not be misconstrued that this website is useless—just not as intuitive as it could be. It still has a wealth of knowledge available to those who take the time to sift through hundreds of articles to find what they are looking for. And really, what self-respective person doesn’t want to know that fingers re-grow, or than there can’t be anymore than two Sith at a time. No one I want to know, that’s for sure.

Philadelphia Museum of Art February 27, 2007 - May 6, 2007 This retrospective exhibition celebrates the life and work of Thomas Chimes, arguably one of the most important artists to emerge on the Philadelphia art scene since World War II. The exhibition includes approximately one hundred paintings and works on paper, many previously unseen, along with extensive biographical and archival material.

THOMAS CHIMES: ADVENTURES IN ‘PATAPHYSICS

ABOUT THOMAS CHIMES Thomas Chimes, born to Greek immigrant parents in Philadelphia in 1921, is widely considered one of the city’s most important living artists. In 1939, Chimes enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied with Daniel Garber, Henry McCarter and Francis Speight. Financial difficulties disrupted Chimes’s studies in December 1939, when he left the Academy to help his father start a new business venture in Alabama. The artist continued his education at the Art Students League in New York in 1941, but his studies were again cut short by events beyond his control, namely the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, which led him to enlist in the US Army Air Force. Following the end of World War II, Chimes completed his education at the Art Students League, where he studied through the aid of the GI Bill with Reginald Marsh, Will Barnet, Vaclav Vytlacil and John Hovannes.

Chimes was deeply affected by seeing Picasso’s Guernica at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. Although he initially resisted its aggressive modernity, Chimes was nonetheless struck by the raw emotional impact of this monumental anti-war painting and thereafter began to take a strong interest in modern art. While a student at the Art Students League, he became acquainted with contemporaries such as Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, George Constant and Tony Smith. Despite the appeal of this intellectually and artistically fertile environment, Chimes was wary of the intense pressure to join groups or adhere to the prevailing artistic climate, which at that time was dominated by the type of abstract painting championed by the prominent formalist art critic Clement Greenberg.

After a seven-month sojourn in Europe with his wife, Dawn, in 1952—viewing the Greek landscape and art of his forebears, meeting Alberto Giacometti in Paris and visiting Henri Matisse’s Chapel of the Rosary of the Dominican Nuns at Vence—Chimes made a conscious decision to permanently settle in Philadelphia in 1953. The relative peace of his home city allowed the artist to explore more deeply his own interests and preoccupations, away from the hectic,

commercially driven art world of New York. It was here, over several decades of hermetic existence and devotion to his craft, that Chimes would develop a rich personal iconography drawing on childhood memories, dreams, and associations that were often inspired by reading the iconoclastic novels and plays of Alfred Jarry.

Chimes has had numerous solo exhibitions, including Thomas Chimes: A Retrospective Exhibition, at the Ringling Museum of Art, in 1968; Thomas Chimes, A Compendium: 1961-1986, at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia in 1986; and Thomas Chimes: Survey at the Alexander Onassis Center for Hellenic Studies, New York, in 1994.

In 1975, Thomas Chimes’ work was included in the Whitney Biennial, and in the following year he was represented in the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s landmark exhibition Three Centuries of American Art. His work is included in many major American museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut; the Phoenix Art Museum; the Delaware Art Museum; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In spring 2007, the Philadelphia Museum of Art will present a comprehensive, 50-year retrospective exhibition devoted to the art of Thomas Chimes. On view from February 27–May 6, 2007, Thomas Chimes: Adventures in ‘Pataphysics will present approximately 100 paintings, metal box constructions, and works on paper created between 1959 and 2006, including many never previously exhibited.

The first full-scale review of his career since 1986, this exhibition will provide a fresh look at the life and work of this highly original artist.

“We are delighted to present this long overdue examination of the career of an artist who has brought a unique voice and perspective to some of the most important artistic issues of the last halfcentury,” said Anne d’Harnoncourt, Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “This retrospective will offer our visitors a wonderful opportunity to consider Tom Chimes’ career as a whole and explore the full scope of his vision.”

“By tracing the stylistic evolution of Chimes’ work, we aim to reveal the artist’s remarkable ability to reinvent himself periodically, as well as to underscore the conceptual nature of his artistic practice,” said Michael Taylor, the Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art, and organizer of the exhibition.

“Another key component of the exhibition will be the interplay between his paintings and those of his artistic precursors. The context of the Museum’s superb collections of American painting and Modern and Contemporary art allows us to appreciate the complex relationship of Chimes’ highly individual art to that of his artistic heroes, including Thomas Eakins and Marcel Duchamp, whose work he admires above all others.”

Thomas Chimes: Adventures in ‘Pataphysics opens with an examination of the artist’s early landscapes of the late 1950s, which were inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s anguished subject matter and vivid yellow hues. These works also represent his first experiments with abstraction in which Chimes explored the formal and structural relationships in his work, delving into what Taylor calls a “serious interrogation of the canvas surface.”

Within a few years Chimes had moved on to canvases that combined landscape imagery with specific symbols such as stars, ladders, and crucifixes which register the profound impact of his encounter with Matisse’s decoration of the Chapel of the Rosary of the Dominican Nuns at Vence in the South of France, which Chimes first saw in 1952, as well as his Greek Orthodox upbringing. By the early 1960s Chimes had enjoyed successful solo shows at the Avant-Garde and Bodley Galleries in New York, resulting in sales to many prominent collectors.

Alfred H. Barr, Jr. purchased two of his paintings for the Museum of Modern Art’s collection in 1961 and 1963 respectively. The first museum purchases of his work, these acquisitions cemented his reputation at the time as an artist of talent and promise.

Despite his early success in New York, Chimes chose to heed the advice of Marcel Duchamp, who predicted that the “great artist of tomorrow” would need to go “underground” to avoid the insidious influence of the commercial art world. Inspired by Duchamp’s famous statement, Chimes has continued to live and work in Philadelphia, always in search of his next big idea rather than commercial success.

In the mid-1960s he began making austere, finely crafted metal box constructions that often incorporate small symbolic drawings, paintings, or even hidden messages. Chimes’ metal boxes, from the 1960s and early 1970s, reflect a strong affinity with the wit and eroticism of Duchamp’s Large Glass, as well as Joseph Cornell’s poetic box constructions.

The often humorous and erotic aspects of Chimes’ works also offer a commentary on the formal austerity of Minimalism, which had begun to dominate the artistic climate of the mid-to-late 1960s.

At the heart of the exhibition will be the haunting series of 48 panel portraits, painted between 1973 and 1978, of French Symbolist poets, philosophers, and other nineteenth–and early twentieth-century literary and art historical figures including Alfred Jarry, Antonin Artaud, James Joyce, Edgar Allan Poe, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Marcel Duchamp. These intimate, sepia toned portraits reveal Chimes’ strong feelings of affinity and continuity with these avant-garde

forerunners, all of whom he regards as “possessed” characters. Each iconic portrait, reminiscent of 19th-century daguerreotypes, is contained within an oversized wooden frame of the type constructed for some of the paintings of fellow Philadelphian Thomas Eakins.

These panel paintings were directly inspired by the artist’s profound interest in the writings of Alfred Jarry (1873–1907), the iconoclastic French author of the notorious play Ubu Roi (1896) and one of the most revered figures in Chimes’ pantheon. Chimes was most interested in Jarry’s invention of the concept of ‘Pataphysics, “the science of imaginary solutions,” which posits a highly imaginative alternate universe made up entirely of exceptions, in which the traditional laws of the universe are upended.

The concluding section of the exhibition will feature the luminous white paintings that Chimes has been producing since the early 1980s. These ethereal paintings are created through the application of layers of colored glaze worked into a white ground, which is then wiped away to leave only a glowing suggestion of the figures and faces of Chimes’ subjects.

The submerged visage of Jarry, James Joyce, or Erik Satie slowly emerges from underneath the flurry of white brushstrokes that covers these paintings like a blanket of snow. In 1999, he began his latest series of paintings, which measure just 3 x 3 inches, and extend the artist’s interest in Jarry and diminutive portraiture.

These works often take the form of medallions in which the French author is barely recognizable beneath the layers of white paint that partially obscure his features.

Through decades of reinvention and transformation, Chimes has maintained a resolute commitment to his craft, and an ability to engage in new and exciting ways with the provocative ideas of Jarry and his followers.

The artist’s imaginative synthesis of philosophy, art and literature in his highly original and idiosyncratic work has made Chimes an influential figure to generations of young artists in Philadelphia, a thriving center for the avant-garde in all the arts.

What is ‘Pataphysics?

‘Pataphysics may be defined as an artistic challenge to the concept of rationality and reason, and the notion that any set of universal laws could explain the world in which we live.

In 1964, Thomas Chimes received from his brother-in-law the May-June 1960 issue of the Evergreen Review, devoted to Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), and entitled “What is ‘Pataphysics?” It was through this publication that Chimes became interested in the French writer’s invented science of ‘Pataphysics, which Jarry defined as “the science of imaginary solutions,” and the journal has remained the artist’s “bible” ever since.

Perhaps best known as the author of the play Ubu Roi (King Ubu), Jarry’s influence on 20th century literary figures, particularly dramatists in the ‘absurdist’ school such as Eugene Ionesco and Samuel Beckett, has been well noted. As an early advocate of a subjectivist and expressionist approach to art, Jarry, as the critic Martin Esslin points out, “must be considered one of the originators of the concepts on which a good deal of contemporary [visual] art … is based.”

Jarry first advanced his philosophy of ‘Pataphysics in Gestes et opinions du Docteur Faustroll, ‘Pataphysician (Exploits and Opinions of Doctor Faustroll, ‘Pataphysician), which was published in 1911, four years after the author’s death. In this “neo-scientific” novel, Jarry argued that ‘Pataphysics makes no claim to universal or absolute laws, but rather presents itself as “the science of the particular,” and “the laws which govern exceptions.” ‘Pataphysics proposes a universe “supplementary” to our own, one in which all things are considered exceptional.

Chimes’ extensive series of panel portraits, as well as the more recent white paintings, are all informed by Jarry’s farcical, tongue-in-cheek philosophy of ‘Pataphysics, which defies rational explanation. ‘Pataphysics opened up for the artist a new and exciting vocabulary of esoteric, quasi-scientific imagery, along with a pantheon of like-minded “father figures” to whose contributions to the world of ideas he continually pays homage.

> HOBY AT THE CAPITOL The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) experience is extremely exciting, but can also be overwhelming. After the first day of events, most are exhausted by the packed agenda but tremendously excited about each day’s opportunities.

On day two of the Central PA HOBY seminar, ambassadors are given a unique perspective into the legislative process, where they get to live out the day as a State Representative in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Upon arriving at The State Capitol, Central PA HOBY ambassadors, who represent the high schools in the 717 and 570 area codes, are ushered through security and are led to the House floor where they sit at the desks of our actual Representatives. Most ambassadors find themselves looking straight up at the enormous fresco on the ceiling in the House chamber.

After being completely overwhelmed by the magnitude of the room, ambassadors participate in the panel The Future of the US: Does the Legislative Process Serve the Public?, which is made up of elected officials, Gubernatorial or General Assembly staff, and lobbyists. Following the closing remarks of the speakers, ambassadors spend about 45 minutes asking very interesting, often probing, questions about their government.

After the panel, ambassadors learn the actual legislative process. Staff of both the House and Senate lead mock House Committees made up of Central PA HOBY “Representatives.” They discuss bills that they wrote before the seminar, which were sent to the appropriate committee for consideration. In committee (Agriculture, Appropriations, Education, Environment, Health, Judiciary, State Government, Transportation, and Veterans’ Affairs) ambassadors learn, first hand, the dynamics of our twoparty system. As each ambassador has been randomly assigned a committee,

each has also been randomly assigned either the majority or the minority party. For an hour and a half the ambassadors debate 10 to 20 bills in an attempt to pass three out of committee for discussion in Caucus.

At the lunch Caucus Meeting in the actual Majority Caucus and Minority Caucus rooms, the randomly predetermined ambassador chair of each committee reports out what bills are being sent to the House floor for consideration. The Leader and Whip of each “party” takes the opportunity to instruct their caucus how they want them to vote during the upcoming legislative session. During session in the House Chamber, ambassadors are encouraged to interrogate their leadership about why each bill should or should not become HOBY law. When the actual vote is called, the Majority and Minority Whips encourage their party how to vote with direction from their Capitol staff facilitators. Ambassadors use the actual electronic voting machines used by their elected Representatives – an opportunity no other Pennsylvanian gets to experience. With the help of a volunteer Speaker of House and Parliamentarian, each ambassador is able to experience the unique opportunity of a being a State Representative for the day.

Unlike any high school civics class or political science class in college, Central PA HOBY ambassadors are given a once-in-a-lifetime, hands-on opportunity to experience the legislative process. Through this one day, each ambassador is able to gain a greater understanding, and a greater appreciation, of the process than most adults of our Commonwealth.

Where are you from originally?

Lincoln Park, a small suburb of Reading. I should add that it’s right next to Shillington, which is where John Updike is from, and where all his ‘Rabbit’ books are set, and where my dad grew up. I like telling people that if you want to know where I’m from, read the Rabbit books. Updike’s dad was my dad’s math teacher, and I’ve long cherished the connection, as I’ve gone on to design a bunch of Updike’s book jackets.

What are your favorite things about where you lived?

It was a great place to grow up. The Wilson school system was excellent and it’s a pleasure to see my brother’s kids going through it now. There are so many opportunities to pursue a lot of great stuff.

I think the worst I could say about it was that I was essentially a gay kid growing up in suburban Pennsylvania in the 1970s and that had its difficulties, to say the least. To that end I definitely understood that I had to keep it a secret until I could make my way to New York after graduation from college so I could safely start dealing with it there. I do wonder to what extent this situation has changed. I suspect not a lot, actually, but on a recent return visit to my high school I saw a poster on the guidance counseler’s door that encouraged kids to confide about feelings of sexual confusion and to not feel ashamed by it. That looked like a little progress, at least.

What inspired you to work in the profession you are in today?

I’ve always loved books, and I’ve always loved making visual material, so if you put the two together, that’s pretty much what I do.

Did you always know what you wanted to do?

Yes and no. There were so many things I wanted to do and still do—music, art, cartooning, movies. I knew I wanted to do something creative, whatever it was. The first real viable opportunity to do this was to design book covers for Knopf publishing. And it’s been over twenty years now.

What is the best and worst part of your job?

The best thing is coming up with a design solution that meets my criteria for success, and then having the client(s) approve and produce it.

I’d say the worst thing is the opposite: when I can’t figure out a good way to solve a particular design problem, or worse—when I do and it gets rejected. Very frustrating.

What does your typical work day consist of?

Drinking and crying. Just kidding! I can truly and honestly say that I love, love, love work, and that the single most important piece of advice I can offer students regarding work is: Life is long in a job that you hate.

You don’t ever, ever want to be in a hostile workplace or doing drudge work that slowly siphons your soul away. So act accordingly.

Anyway, a typical day involves juggling as many as ten or so projects in various states of completion, from starting an initial concept to checking printed proofs before we go to final press. That all may sound exhausting, and sometimes it is, but I prefer it to just working on one thing at a time. I can get bored easily and having so many different projects to work on at once keeps things interesting.

What was the last good movie you saw?

Pan’s Labyrinth. The weird thing is it’s a kid’s movie that no kid could or should ever watch. It’s a bizarre mix of utterly charming fantasy elements shoved up against some of the most savagely brutal (and convincing) scenes of human torture that I’ve ever seen.

Who are your favorite authors?

Wow, so many. J. D. Salinger, Vladimir Nabokov, Evelyn Waugh, John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Truman Capote, Susan Sontag, to name just a few off the top of my head. As for living writers, John Updike, Dave Eggers, Alice Munroe, Lorrie Moore, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, David Sedaris. And then all the great comics writer-artists: Charles Schulz, Winsor McCay, Jack Cole, Chester Gould; my friends Frank Miller, Dan Clowes and Chris Ware.

What are you most passionate about?

In no particular order: Food, comic books, my boyfriend of eleven years (and counting), discreet nose-picking, Debussy, Art Deco bathroom fixtures, writing, Italy, the Superman cartoons of the Fliescher Brothers, sleeping, authentic Neopolitan Pizza, living in New York City, fresh-cut french fries, Japan, and Batman.

What do you eat for breakfast?

My enemies. Sorry—I meant yogurt.

What would you say is your most honorable achievement so far?

I would say having a career I’m passionate about, a great place to live in New York City, and most important: an enduring, fufilling relationship with a great man. All these feel like great accomplishments to me.

Describe a learning experience that changed your life.

When my beloved cousin Julie (who was like a sister to me) dropped dead of a heart attack at age 32 it really taught me a lot, and it was nothing I ever wanted to know: terrible things can and do happen for absolutely no reason to people who don’t deserve it.

All the time. I think most people understand this only in the abstract, until it becomes all too concrete. It taught me to take more chances, creatively and personally, and to not put off attempting to fufill certain goals in some nameless time in a future that may or may not exist.

Who is your personal hero?

I would say my parents. I couldn’t have had better.

What advice would you give to young people pursuing a career in graphic design?

First and foremost: learn the history of it. Really study what’s been done and why and how. This is a lot easier to do now than it was when I was in college, due to both the internet and a veritable library’s worth of books on graphic design history that have been published in the last decade or so.

What is lacking in design education today?

Emphasis on hand skills. No matter what the computer can do, students still need to learn how to draw, how to make marks with real materials on real surfaces. It really affects the way you think about problem-solving.

The main thing is that I was part of the last generation of graphic design students to learn how to do it before the arrival of (Apple) computers.

If your life had a title, what would it be?

“Live Every Day of Your Life As If You’re Dying Of A Contagious Disease That Turns People Into Flesh-eating Zombies When You Bite Them.”

CHOOSING THE COLLEGE THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU Admissions experts say that selecting a college ultimately comes down to finding a school that’s the right fit. That’s one reason why visiting a campus is so important-it’s the best way to evaluate whether a university is well suited to your needs.

Visit a campus and speak with professors and students, sit in on classes, tour the facilities and gain a sense of the campus community. “When you visit, be sure to take some notes, but you may also consider bringing a camera to snap a few shots to refresh your memory once you are back home after a visit,” says Bruce Gardiner, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

NARROW DOWN CHOICES Ask yourself some basic questions. For example, some items to consider include campus size (big or small), location (urban or rural), as well as campus life, academic programs, extracurricular activities, etc. “Think about the basic criteria of your search. Deciding what features of a school are most important can help you narrow your search,” says Gardiner.

GET ORGANIZED Are you going to take the SATs, ACTs or SAT Subject Tests? What are the deadlines for these tests? Also, some schools may not require SATs. “Often, students will take standardized tests such as the PSAT as early as their sophomore year so they can benchmark what schools may be a fit from an academic rigor perspective,” says Gardiner.

SEARCH TOOLS Once you’ve begun to narrow your search, hop online. “Individual college Web sites such as Lehigh’s (www.lehigh.edu/admissions) are a wealth of information for details about the college and the admissions process,” says Gardiner. “You may also want to check out CollegeBoard.com, which offers a free ‘College MatchMaker’ search tool that helps you identify possible schools based on some basic criteria.”

It’s also important to talk with a guidance counselor. He or she can help familiarize you with your chosen school’s application process.

In addition, identify a few teachers you can ask to write recommendations. Be sure to touch base with the teachers well in advance of the deadlines. That way, they’ll have plenty of time to write and you’ll have plenty of time to understand what they may want from you.

No matter what kind of school you’re looking for, Gardiner says it’s critical that students take ownership of their college search. “Going through the motions and relying on someone else, like your parents or guidance counselors, to make all your decisions is a recipe for you landing someplace that is not a good fit in the long term. It’s really important that you play an active role in finding someplace that is right for you.”

FBLA MEMBERS TEST THEIR KNOWLEDGE Tests are a common part of American education; however, most students dread these assessments—that is, all tests except those administered by Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).

Surprisingly, each year, thousands of students across the nation enjoy taking FBLA tests. An essential component to this organization, the Competitive Events Program, allows FBLA members to be awarded for their knowledge in various genres of the business world. The 53 different events are based on projects developed from the goals of FBLA and the curricula of business education programs.

The events are wide-ranging and focus on demonstrating knowledge and skills related to career clusters for which students may be preparing: business, management and administration; finance; government and public administration; information technology; law, public safety; and marketing, sales and service.

FBLA competitive events are classified as individual events, team, events, and chapter events. Some examples of individual events are Accounting I and Accounting II, Business Law, Business Calculations, Business Communication, Economics and Networking Concepts, among others.

Working as members of a team is important in business and industry, and team events are an important part of the competitive events program. Team members work together to solve problems in events such as Entrepreneurship, Global Business, Management Decision Making, or Network Design, for example.

Although some of the events are limited to written tests, a significant number of events require an application, presentation or performance in addition to the written test. Students may compete in performance related events such as Business Ethics, Impromptu Speaking, Public Speaking I or Public Speaking II, Job Interview, or Mr. or Ms. Future Business Leader.

This year’s competitive events program has undergone a major change from prior years. Competencies to be demonstrated have been reviewed to reflect the expectations of business and industry, and a series of new and revised competitive events—especially related to information technology—have been incorporated into the program. Those new and revised information technology events include: Cyber Security, Computer Applications, Database Design and Applications, Desktop Publishing, Digital Video Production, E-business, Electronic Career Portfolio, Multimedia Presentation, Spreadsheet Applications and the online Virtual Business Challenge, among others.

Geographically, Pennsylvania FBLA is divided into 28 regions. While there are a few unique events, most begin with a competition at the Region Leadership Conference (RLC) among each region’s members (usually 8-12 schools). The top three students in the objective tests event qualify to advance to the State Leadership Conference, while the top one or two in the performance and team-related events qualify to advance to the SLC. This year’s SLC is from April 30 until May 2 at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Chocolatetown U.S.A. There, the best of each region’s state qualifiers will compete against one another in their respective events and pursue the honor of representing PA at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Chicago, Illinois, this summer. The culmination of the State Leadership Conference is a live streamed broadcast of the PA FBLA Awards Program on Tuesday night, May 1, so that family, friends and school staff can watch from the comfort of their homes.

On the national level, PA FBLA has an outstanding reputation for placing well in competitive events. The following seven PA FBLA members earned top honors by placing first at the 2006 NLC in Nashville, TN: Josh Sohmer in Computer Applications, Neshaminy High School; Jason Trigg in Economics, Unionville High School; the team of Leandra Eckman, Jennifer Hoover, Katherine Lynerd and Brady Schade in Parliamentary Procedure, Chestnut Ridge High School; and Vanessa Bower in Management, Jersey Shore High School. At the conclusion of the National Leadership Conference, Pennsylvania left with more than 30 national award winners—garnishing the second highest number of awards, falling only behind California. Pennsylvania FBLA and its members have consistently been recognized as one of the top three award-winning states each year at the NLC, a credit to quality teaching and learning being done in Pennsylvania schools and a credit to the hard work put forth by Pennsylvania’s competitors to be the best they can be.

DISTANT BEHAVIOR This is the most common behavior associated with relationship troubles. In this phase your partner suddenly becomes quiet and disengaged in your presence. They offer very little substance to your communication, and you find yourself struggling to maintain dialogue.

Frequent uses of apathetic statements like “I don’t care” and “I don’t know” are indicators that they are going out of their way to avoid conversation.

AVOIDANCE Nothing is worse than being pushed away from a loved one, yet this is a common tactic used in breakups. Ignoring phone calls, working longer hours and spending more time with friends are all indicators that you are being avoided. Unfortunately, this behavior can often lead to more devious behavior such as lying and cheating.

CONFRONTATION Another sign of a pending breakup is the display of confrontational behavior. You may experience that your partner challenges you on everything you say, or argues about the most trivial of problems. This strategy is used to create the illusion that you are incompatible as a couple. It can leave you feeling as if everything is your fault, when actually you have done nothing wrong.

DISAPPEARING FRIENDS Sometimes the clues that things are not going well are found in the shared social network of you and your partner. You may find that good friends begin to ignore you, as they have chosen to side with your partner. This can even bleed into family members. Perhaps you considered yourself close with your partner’s mother, but now she barely speaks to you. This is a bad sign that discussions about your relationship are being held behind your back.

THREATS AND ULTIMATUMS Threatening behavior is not always physical.

In fact, some people use verbal threats to manipulate others. Breakup threats used to make you feel uncomfortable in your relationship and second-guess yourself. Ultimatums on the other hand are specific conditions communicated by your partner that must occur in order to prevent a breakup. Both of these tactics take advantage of your fear of rejection to exploit you.

In most instances of failing relationships, multiple examples of these behaviors can be found. Typically, the unhappy partner will do anything they can to create extra tension and confusion within the relationship. Those who fall victim to the manipulation often wonder why the aggressor simply doesn’t break up with them if they are unhappy. The answer to this mystery revolves around accountability.

For whatever reason, the aggressor does not want the responsibility of ending things. They would rather make your life so miserable that you have little choice but to breakup with them. It is how you deal with this situation that determines how things will end.

Where are you from originally?

I grew up in Peckville, Pennsylvania. I lived at home until my second semester of graduate school. It was then that I realized the daily commute to Bloomsburg was too much for me to handle. I moved into an apartment in Bloomsburg and lived there until I completed my masters program. After graduation I landed a job at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital and spent the next five years living in Bethlehem, PA. In 1996 a job position became available at the John Heinz Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in Wilkes-Barre, PA. I was offered a position in pediatric rehabilitation so I moved back to my home town to marry my long time boyfriend. As luck would have it, we married in 1998. My husband Joe and I currently live in Moosic, PA with our adorable Persian, Chelsea (aka poky).

What are your favorite things about where you live?

I like the casual dining opportunities at the local pubs.

The pubs are quaint and less crowded than those found in larger cities. Northeast PA also has some beautiful lakes and state parks. I lived in this area for most of my life but it wasn’t until recently, when my husband and I began kayaking, that I recognized the beauty of this area, especially during the summer and fall months.

Where do you work?

College Misericordia. I am the Clinical Director of the Speech, Language, and Hearing Center that is located on the college campus.

Misericordia is one of only three schools in the nation that offers a five year master’s degree program in Speech-Language Pathology. As part of our curriculum, students must gain clinical experience working with a variety of clients across the life span who exhibit communication disorders. Our on-site clinic allows our students to gain experience working in the field prior to venturing out into the acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, early intervention centers, and school settings to obtain the required clinical hours for graduation, certification, and licensure.

What do you wear at work?

Most days when I am working in the clinic or teaching my dress is business casual. On days when I know I will be assisting a student clinician in the treatment of a young client in our clinic I will dress more casual.

What did you study in school?

During my undergraduate course work I majored in Communication Disorders (Speech-Language Pathology).

It was during this time that I learned what the field was all about. My focus in graduate school was more centered on the field of Speech-Language Pathology.

It was here that I gained a more in depth knowledge of communication disorders and how to evaluate, diagnose, and treat individuals experiencing difficulties with communication.

What inspired you to work in the profession you are in today?

I have always been interested in the sciences and enjoy being around people. As a Speech-Language Pathologist I interact with people on a daily basis. The appreciation and respect I receive from assisting clients and their families is what makes my profession so rewarding.

Did you always know what you wanted to do?

No. Growing up I really had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I just knew I had to go to college and that I wanted to do something in the health profession.

My mother is a Nurses Aide; so initially I decided to give nursing a try. Prior to graduating from Valley View High School, I was accepted into Community Medical Center’s School for Nursing. Luckily this program had me working in the hospital after my first semester. The first time I stepped into the hospital I immediately knew nursing was not for me. I completed the year just in case I decided to give it another try, but that never happened.

How long have you been working in this field?

I have been working as a Speech-Language Pathologist for the past 16 years. I started working as a speech therapist treating pediatric and adult clients in an outpatient rehabilitation setting. As the pediatric program grew, I found myself specializing in the treatment of

young children with speech and language disorders.

My love for pediatrics continued to grow over the years and although I continue to work with individuals across the life span, my passion lies in treating pediatric clients.

What is the best and worst part of your job?

The best part of my job is the gratification I receive when I make a positive change in the life of someone who is struggling to communicate. If you have ever been to a foreign country and did not know the language, then you know all too well the feelings of isolation and inadequacy that you experience when you are unable to express your feelings and needs to others.

Individuals with speech and language impairments are faced with these issues every day. Giving someone the gift of communication is my greatest accomplishment to me.

The worst part of my job is the paperwork. Interacting with people is effortless and pleasurable. Completing all the necessary clinical documentation and meeting deadlines is tedious and mundane. I must stress, however, that the satisfaction I receive from helping others far outweighs the cumbersome formalities.

What does your typical work day consist of?

As Clinical Director of the Speech, Language, and Hearing Center at Misericordia my responsibilities are numerous. Our Center provides speech and language services to approximately 30-60 clients per semester.

Prior to the commencement of each semester it is my responsibility to coordinate the clients’ schedules and the schedules of each student completing one of their three required on-site clinical experiences. Once the schedules are in place and the semester begins, it is my duty to oversee the students as they work with their clients. Initially, I assist students in the clinical setting so they can see first hand what techniques and procedures work best to enhance the communication skills of their clients. As the students gain more independence I step outside the treatment room and observe their sessions through our two-way mirrors. Following all sessions, students are provided with written and oral feedback to further enhance their learning experience.

In addition to supervising, I also conduct weekly seminars with the clinical students to review various therapeutic techniques and to discuss any concerns students may have regarding their clinical caseload.

Who is your personal hero?

My personal heroes are the clients I treat and the students I teach. They remind me that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and work hard to achieve your goals.

Students who are in their final year of graduate study are required to complete two field work placements off-campus. As Clinical Director it is my responsibility to arrange each student’s site and to set them up with a supervisor who will continue to educate and train them to become skillful, independent clinicians.

Throughout the semester, I keep in contact with the students via e-mail and the telephone. I contact every student’s clinical supervisor and make site visits one to two times each semester to ensure that each student is receiving the best clinical experience possible.

What scares you?

I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my husband, family and friends; so what scares me is being alone.

What was the last good movie you saw?

I actually can’t remember the last movie I really liked.

I’m more into TV shows – Survivor, 24, American Idol and Lost.

What are you most passionate about?

I love my job! The satisfaction I receive from assisting clients and teaching young students to become professional Speech-Language Pathologists is indescribable.

Not many individuals wake up each day wanting to go to work. I can honestly say, “I do.”

What would you say is your most honorable achievement so far?

Being a successful and well respected SpeechLanguage Pathologist is by far my most honorable achievement thus far. Through the years I have learned that with determination, perseverance and the drive to succeed, anything is achievable.

Describe a learning experience that changed your life.

My husband’s father passed away unexpectedly in May 1995. It was at that time that I realized we are given only one chance in life and it is up to each individual to make the best of the talents they are given. Soon after this tragic life changing event, I moved back to the area, put everything I had into my chosen profession, got married and began to live each day as if it might be my last. I’ve learned not to take life for granted.

What were your favorite classes in high school and/or college?

Gosh, it’s been quite some time since I’ve been in high school. I guess I’d have to say I enjoyed my science classes the most during my high school years.

In college, my favorite courses were those that focused on communication disorders (i.e., Child Language Disorders, Phonology, Aphasia and Traumatic Brain Injury). I found these courses to be intriguing and as a result, it was easy to learn and retain the information.

What type of music do you like?

My favorite musician is Elton John. My favorite album is Dark Side of the Moon.

What are your interests outside of work?

Physical fitness is very important to me. I work out on my treadmill and lift weights just about every day.

During the summer months I enjoy kayaking, spending time with my family and friends, and walking and running outdoors. Camping and hiking are on my “to do” list for this year.

What advice would you give to young people pursuing a career in Speech Pathology?

Misericordia hosts a speech-language exploration camp every summer as a means to educate high school junior and senior students about the profession of Speech-Language Pathology. Students spend three days and two nights on campus and in the community learning about the profession and experiencing life on campus. For those students interested in learning more about the profession I strongly suggest that they attend this camp. The next camp is scheduled to run from June 24- June 26, 2007. To find out more about Misericordia’s Speech-Language Pathology Program and camp visit www.misericordia.edu/slp.

For those who are interested in pursuing a career in Speech-Language Pathology but are unable to attend camp, I strongly suggest that they make an appointment with a Speech-Language Pathologist working in the field. Observe a therapist in action and imagine yourself doing that same line of work. If it’s something you can see yourself doing then by all means investigate the profession further.

Obtaining a masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology and meeting all the requirements to become a certified, licensed Speech-Language Pathologist is demanding but obtainable. If you have the determination to succeed and the desire to work in a truly rewarding profession then a career in Speech-Language Pathology may be for you.

What do you see yourself doing in five years?

Working at Misericordia, there is a strong emphasis on furthering your education. In view of this, I am thinking about pursuing my clinical doctorate and/or taking on some private clients to further my clinical skills. At this time, I am not sure what path would be best for me to take considering my current position. Regardless of my decision, I want to continue to grow as a professional in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Sixteen years ago I would have never dreamed I would be where I am today. Where do I see myself in five years?

The possibilities are endless!

If your life had a title, what would it be?

Small Miracles—because my most defining moments, my greatest accomplishments have been the profound impact I’ve had on the lives of so many of the kids I’ve treated. Those experiences will stay with me for a lifetime, and they truly are worth writing about.

SYMPATHY: A SHORT TALE BY RENEE RUDOLPH, MECHANICSBURG, PA

Friendly, you bet we are. Mechanicsburg, a good place to live. These short phrases are otherwise known as fragments, but are signs I drive by every day. I work there and live here. I am a disease of bad slogans, an illness of pathetic catchphrases.

The name under my orange smiley sticker states, “Renee,” but my friends call me Nae-nae; men call me plain or flat chested, and my customers call me “snap my fingers and appear.” This is my anecdote, my experience in a failing restaurant and what has gone on around my life while working in a nosedive of an eatery. She is destined to have boards on the windows soon, with nothing but F--e-d-eys lit up in the night.

I can remember when I began this job, when I took serving humans seriously. I was naïve. I was trained at another store, one that actually had humans inside, carpet, and a wonderful mural to attract the dollars; we don’t actually care about the people, it’s all a ploy to get to their money. There was an order there, like a government; there was a ruling power to keep everything from dwindling to chaos. It overwhelmed me—it still overwhelms me—but now I only cry on the way home from work every other night.

I was transferred to my store, the one on the Pike like every other restaurant in the world. One single release I was granted in that place was when he came to visit for the first time. In my serving area, an aisle deemed the “30’s and 40’s,” hell had broken loose on a Friday night. Servers running around like chickens with their heads cut off, holding plates of chicken without heads. Nevertheless, he stood at the podium entrance, olive green shirt complementing bronzed skin, slender eyes so brown they were barely eyes, they were morsels of

coal. A friend, a love and at that moment, a Godsend who stopped by to take a short pit stop to hell on his return to heaven; the only ones who matter are, in fact, the ones who we love and distinguish as these “angels.” This made me realize something very key in my survival as a server: the people around me did not matter because they were only people.

I met so many of these common day people.

One of our cooks had been in jail—my fellow servers? One was an ecstasy addict, another a lesbian who despised me from the get go and three of the women had had kids when they were 16 years old. All of them smoked some type of substance, primarily cigarettes, except Pete and me. Now, I am not saying that I judge these people because I know their true character and I believe they are fine people; but that is only what they are: people. I won’t miss them and they won’t miss me, but that’s the nature of the biz.

Pete was a 20-year-old Pittsburgh attendee who was home from college, looking for some extra cash to fund his way through the higher education system. Pete was, in layman’s terms, an Adonis and obliterated the very thought of my angel. He was, and probably still is, a man with a rogue exterior and a soft inner core who was sweet on me until the very end of the summer. It was nice having Pete distract me from the other guy, because that other guy, formerly known as my love, had forgotten me a long time ago.

I have only been employed for four months, but somehow it seems like one massive day.

People walk in, people walk out, cook’s bellow “order in the window” and servers scream “I’ll be right there.” Preparing the salads, cleaning dishes,

rolling silverware, complaining about your day and, most importantly, remaining sane are all in a day’s work. Managers coming into your face, blowing cigarette breath, and inquiring, “what’s going on, do you need something, are you alright, what’s up?”

One would assume that the managers show concern for their employees, but it’s just the sheer fact that they like to know everything in the store, which forces us to tell them nothing; never give a kid candy if he begs.

Four months of serving and somehow I still couldn’t fathom how to balance a tray on my forearm or how to assuage a screaming child. Oftentimes, I would hide from my customers or convince them that peppers didn’t come on their salads due to the reality that I had forgotten to put them on. Four perpetual months and I still couldn’t get it right. I still can’t. Sure, I could scream, “Hello, welcome to Friendly’s” whenever the door whooshed open just as I was taught on my first day of training.

Nevertheless, when would I reach a certain amount of comfort, knowing that I will return home happy?

I scream random thoughts in my head while I walk down the crayon-stained aisle; booths on either side of me, tiny eyes and gigantic stomachs watching my every move. A gazelle in a lion pit. My nose twitches, pretending it can talk and hollers, “Don’t you people get it?! I’m only 17 years old, I’m still in high school and how well your date goes depends solely on me? What about my night?! I have friends, old lady, what do you have? A book and a clamboat basket with mashed potatoes. Isn’t one number-six plastic dish of honey mustard enough for you? Are you hell-bent on ruining the earth, as well as my spirit, tonight?! Your demanding nature make the cooks yell at me like I’m the one

who so desperately needs their warm fries. I go home, disposition and strength of mind demolished because your flipping bun wasn’t toasted.”

One Monday night I had declared as a day off but somehow I stood there surrounded by the faux-pas multi-colored paper stars and stripes.

There I stood a marvel of modern day science since it was so obvious I had no spine. That night a toothless wonder, a screaming baby and an unhappy couple were on my plate while dead carcasses on a bun were on theirs. Table 53 stopped me and I prepared for it. Prepared for a “can I speak to the manager” or a “I don’t normally complain but…” Prepared for anything but a whopper of a compliment, considering compliments arrive like penguins fly. “We’ve gone to so many restaurants these past three days because we’re from out of town and out of all of them; you have been our best waitress.” Fifteen dollar tip, two people and one hell of a gas spending spree!

Quit. The one thing I ache for so badly, but the terms “two weeks notice” won’t form on my lips. It is not due to the fact that I have no self-respect; it’s altruism. Even though my back aches and my fingers hurt, I clench my teeth in agony and make everyone around me wonder why I keep returning. Why don’t I just stop it once and for all? I believe it’s an addiction; it couldn’t be an easy addiction like smoking. I simply can’t abandon these poor shmucks; I am 1/5 of the store. How can I leave these poor starving saps just like the others left me? It’s called compassion and our store desperately lacks it on all ends.

Have you ever read the classic Kesey novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest? Can you recall that character who always yelped in emotional

agony that he was tired? Well, I am tired. I always ask what they want, what they need and where exactly does this concern land me? Does it help end world hunger or stop the United States from making poor decisions? Will this job structure me to be successful in contributing to society? I watch everything go on around me, stuck in the same place I was 20 minutes ago. I had a summer, I had freedom and I had a life and now every day I wake up waiting for that moment when I will drive into that parking lot, walk into those doors and do the dance over and over and over again. I gave up all that I had in life; every glimpse of amusement melted away with the overbearing schedule. Once more, I am giving up fleeting moments to gain something socially acceptable. I haven’t experienced, I haven’t gained a better knowledge of life. I have just become more of “the machine” more of a “developed, grown” woman. I am now an upstanding character for society, a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage. I gave up a great deal of my happiness to become everything I had always fought against and never wanted to be. I’m tired, I am so tired.

I still work; I hate work. I am not free; will I ever be free again? I am unhappy; will I get a chance to be happy once more? I am tired; I need a chance to rest my tortured soul. I want what I can’t have; will it ever be within my reach? I am reaching for the stars, but will I ever capture the right one?

I have had enough; it’s over. I can’t do this anymore. I can’t stand the constant hate emitted from the eyes of my customers. I can’t stand the chaos and I can’t stand that service aisle. I can’t stand being nice to kids! I must escape! I must vacate this place; it’s closing in on me so tightly I

can barely breathe. I need a paper bag so I can dry heave. My head is spinning off my neck and it’s rolling on the ground with the people watching it, not offering assistance because why would they bother to help their server?

That name. Server?! One who serves others, a servant, a peasant, a serf, and in Shakespeare terms perhaps even a knave! I do not live to serve others, I live to serve myself and cater to my wants and my will. It’s over.

Dear Managers, I first would like to greatly apologize for the burden imposed by my preceding actions, offer you my deepest sympathy, and wish luck to you.

Unfortunately, I have found that a job at this point in my life is not a priority but I must thank you for the past job opportunity and the experiences. If I find that I can take on a job and school, I will return, but as of right now it is far too much for me too handle. It is my last year of being a “kid,” and I am going to experience it instead of working. I apologize for the inconvenience this lays upon the store, but I believe with the new manager the store will pull through. You may consider this my “two weeks notice,” but I would appreciate it if I was not put on the schedule from September 25th on. I am not sure if I will continue working as a clown, if you need me I will do that, but I will not serve anymore.

RACHEL CARSON, writer, scientist, and ecologist, grew up simply in the rural river town of Springdale, Pennsylvania.

Her mother bequeathed to her a life-long love of nature and the living world that Rachel expressed first as a writer and later as a student of marine biology. Carson graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham College) in 1929, studied at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, and received her MA in zoology from Johns Hopkins University in 1932. She died in 1964 after a long battle against breast cancer. Her witness for the beauty and integrity of life continues to inspire new generations to protect the living world and all its creatures.

THE TOWN THAT CHOCOLATE BUILT By: Felix Yerace

Most Pennsylvanians have heard of Hershey, headquarters of America’s largest chocolate company.

But few know the history of the unique town or its benevolent founder, Milton Hershey.

Milton Hershey was born in Pennsylvania in 1857. After an apprenticeship with a Lancaster candy maker, this real-life Willy Wonka set out on his own to eventually build both a candy empire and a bustling town that would bear his name.

Despite limited schooling as a child (he only received the equivalent of a fourth grade education), and the failure of his first three candy making enterprises, Hershey eventually struck success when he opened the Lancaster Caramel Company. However,

Hershey’s real future would lie not in the production caramel candy, but milk chocolate candy.

Hershey would eventually sell the Lancaster Caramel Company to focus exclusively on the production of milk chocolate candy. At the turn of the 20th century, such candy was still an exotic luxury for Americans, with the Swiss being the major producers of the product. Indeed, Hershey had to buy machinery from Germany to make his new candy here in America. It took Hershey several years of experimentation to create his formula for mixing sugar, cocoa and milk into his famous chocolate bar. The only missing ingredients Hershey needed for success was land for a chocolate factory,

a work force and a large supply of fresh milk. He found all three ingredients in Derry Township, outside of Harrisburg, near the place of his birth. In 1905, Hershey opened his chocolate factory and began mass-producing his confectionary creation for consumption across America, the first nationally marketed candy in the country, and more importantly, the first that was affordable to the average American.

Not content with merely making a fortune, however, Hershey, like many successful industrialists of his day, was determined to give back to the community. Like Andrew Carnegie, Hershey had a deep sense of responsibility to both his community and workers. Unlike Carnegie, however, Hershey proved far more successful in providing for his workers. Hershey literally built the town that bears his name. While a “company town” with the chocolate factory at its heart, its soul was very much the people that worked for Hershey. “model town” and it was, as in the town, Hershey provided comfortable homes for his workers and multiple recreational activities in parks, a public transportation system and high quality schools for the children of his workers. Hershey did not exploit his workers, but truly cared about their well-being.

During the Great Depression, Milton Hershey embarked on a huge building campaign to keep the people of central Pennsylvania working. As a result, the town of Hershey acquired many of its now historic buildings. From this start, Hershey has grown to include an amusement park, zoo, convention center and the Giant Center, home of both the Hershey Bears hockey team, and many PIAA championship events. Visitors to Hershey can also go to “Chocolate World,” where they can learn about the chocolate making process.

Perhaps Hershey’s most lasting legacy was the establishment of the Milton S. Hershey School. As

Hershey and his wife were unable to have children of their own, the school was established to educate orphaned boys and provide them an opportunity in their lives they otherwise would not have received.

Hershey eventually donated all of his company stock to the board of directors of the school, endowing it with a fortune and allowing it to continue its mission of providing a top-notch education to underprivileged boys (and eventually, girls) to this very day. The board of directors eventually decided to expand Hershey’s original educational vision, and awarded a $50 million dollar grant to establish the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, which provides high quality health care to the residents of Hershey and the surrounding area, and, as the Medical College of Penn State University, has provided thousands of doctors their degrees and a chance to hone their medical expertise.

Today, the Milton S. Hershey School controls a majority of the shares of stock of the Hershey

Foods Company and wholly owns the Hershey Entertainment and Resort Company, meaning that for each visit made to a Hershey property or each Hershey product consumed, the mission of Milton Hershey continues.

For a man who was nearly bankrupt by the age of 30, Milton Hershey is a testament to the American dream. Throughout his life, he was committed to honesty, fairness and integrity. He was imaginative and driven, and the town that bears his name (as well as his company) continues to provide enjoyment to millions each year, while serving as a lasting legacy to this Pennsylvanian candy maker and his care and concern for others.
