INDUSTRIAL PLAYHOUSE Location: Sydney, NSW Year: 2020 Program: Civic Centre, Bio-plastic Research lab, Art studio Tutor: Qianyi Lim Role: Solo Project School: University of Sydney

Sydney in the 18th to 20th century was dominated by industrial production, and was not until the late 20th century where consumerism took over the city pushing industrial plants to the periphery. This project is a reaction to the commercialized retail city space, where users are separated from the source of their goods. Using industrial influences to highlight the historical climate while showcasing the emerging sustainable bioplastic industry.

The project was to design a civic space and research facility for the emerging research group SASi; a

science and art collaboration which focuses on seaweeds’ potential as a bioplastic, food source and building material.

Project Set in 2030, the structural elements are based on the demolished warehousing and industries within Sydney in the next 10 years; monumentalizing their importance and its history sustainably. While the bioplastic labs will showcase their research through its bioplastic polycarbonate façade, production process (on ground level), and apertures in its core.

PERIPHERAL FUTURES Location: Cateme Settlement, Tete, Mozambique Year: 2020 Program: Tutor: Rumi Kurokawa, Ori Merom Role: Solo Project School: Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)

This project site is in Tete, Mozambique in a settlement built by Vale mining Corporation to facilitate the displacement of Mozambicans from their homes in mineral/coal rich earth. This project is a research on architectural dispossession critiquing the housing and amenities provided

by Vale.

The settlement is an isolated plot 40km away from town centres. It has inadequate infrastructure and poor soil - economically isolating the community from grey markets or opportunity for subsistence farming while also making education a trek.

Housing provided by Vale were made from brick and mortar a technique that was unfamiliar to the community while being hard to source. Housing units contained all the bedrooms which limited possibility of expansion and was contrary to their traditional planning scheme.

The project envisions a bamboo plantation and processing plant which also acts as a community centre. The bamboo will be used as a substitute for domestic fuel (mitigating deforestation of hardwood), a familiar construction material and other craft and medicinal uses.

Original Village of Resettled people

Old villages were built in clusters with each building serving a specific purpose.

The main living quarter in the centre.

Made from local materials which residents know how to use; and procured easily and cheaply.

NEW Houses were built dependent on household size at time of resettlement - no room for development.

Conventional grid layout to facilitate easy expansion.

Used materials hard to source for the average inhabitant, thus buildings were unable to be repaired or expanded.

BETWEEN TWO FERNS Location: Springwood, Sydney, NSW Year: 2019 Program: Community Centre, plaza Tutor: Ozgur Gocer Role: Solo Project School: University of Sydney

Located within the edge of the Blue Mountains region it serves as the first pit stop towards the beautiful landscapes open Blue Mountains.

It is a small quiet village with a predominantly elderly population.

The site located only sloping car park overlooking the bushland below, as such the key objective was to bridge this link between village and bush. The project would host the existing carpark and attract the local population and visitors on their way to the Blue Mountains while being respectful of the local village and flora.

Sustainability is at the core of the project; it promotes social sustainability through inclusive programming. Ecological sustainability through the plant nursery and it employs effective sustainable design strategies on site and on an urban scale.

The project is bisected by a plaza and terraced walkway directed towards the bushlands. The bisected buildings host workshops, studios, computer labs, children’s learning centre, a small gallery,

café, and indoor courts, with parking underground. The Plaza hosts Sunday markets and catering from the café while terrace offers the link between village and the bushlands.

CROWS NEST APARTMENT Location: Crows Nest, Sydney, NSW, Australia Year: 2019 Program: Mixed use, Residential High Rise Tutor: Isabel Gabaldón Role: Collaborative work with 1 other School: University of Sydney

The project encompasses a residential tower in conjunction with adjacent communal facilities (retail and a local library) that sits atop the new proposed Metro station.

Located between the commercial district of St Leonards and the village of Crows nest; the project identity finds a middle ground between both suburbs in the form of large-scale residential tower and low scale arcade/retail strip married together with the central green space which exposes the heritage building further enhancing the areas civic identity.

The key objectives were to retain and highlight the existing heritage building and create a humble connection to the Crows Nest village, beginning with the demolition of underutilized office buildings to open a public green space.

Green buffer space is also embraced on certain floors of the tower and its roof, to allow for privacy for the residents.

The arcade wraps around and shields green space from vehicular traffic.

PATAKA MODERNA Location: Avondale, Auckland, New Zealand Year: 2017 Program: Library, Community hall, plaza Tutor: Dr Emilio Jose Garcia Role: Collaborative work with 3 others School: University of Auckland

Situated in the heart of Avondale, adjacent to a chain of low-density shops, the town square, recreational spaces, and residential blocks - it is an area rich with history and activity.

It was prominent trade route during the early days of the Maori settlement as such the project seeks to revitalize the dying Maori culture within the town. Drawing inspiration from the traditional Maori storage house ‘Pataka’; a communal storehouse (or granary, lifted from the earth). It was symbolic of the community’s wealth and prestige.

We translated its form into a space that exhibits the towns artifacts, stories, and its culture over time. The interior shelving would be grand and act as furniture; thus, the users take on the role of artefact.

The building’s facade is carved by local craftsmen which tell the story of Avondale and the L shaped form provides passive surveillance and accessibility from the main street.

Renovation of an existing building situated in a bushfire prone area.

The project aims to redesign the existing buildings envelope to comply with BAL29 standards. The project features a new zinc façade, new

deck, pitched zinc roof to enlarge rain water harvest and manual bespoke zinc cladded shutters which slide to enclose the building while being flush with the façade to create sleek continuity.
