A key material used across our outdoor collections, steel is a highly recyclable metal that can be repurposed in future production cycles. Similarly, the recycled plastic used in the Rely Outdoor Chair is sourced from discarded white goods, transforming waste into a resource. To help prevent overconsumption and biodiversity loss while supporting the wellbeing of local communities, the teak we use is harvested from responsibly managed, FSC®-certified forests.

RFH COLLECTION
by Robin Day
Originally designed by Robin Day in 1951 to complement the restaurant and foyer seating in London’s Royal Festival Hall, the RFH collection is grounded by a distinctive visual presence. Decidedly simple in construction and small in proportion, the series once sat in multiples on the venue’s outdoor terrace, inviting guests to slow down and enjoy a moment of repose in the heart of the city. Comprised of a table in two sizes and a chair with accompanying cushions, the collection maintains a light and airy presence wherever situated through a blend of teak and powder-coated steel. Robin Day’s use of honest materials is indicative of his desire to introduce forms that would complement and enrich the lives of those around them.

Guided by a pragmatic, creative ethos and social conscience, British designer Robin Day found acclaim after winning first place in the storage section of the Museum of Modern Art’s Low-Cost Furniture Competition in New York in 1948. His designs were not only considered to achieve an equilibrium between comfort and utility, but expressed an optimistic approach towards the future and the creative modalities that would shape it. Day’s works also represented a shift in the collective mindset towards form and materiality, causing ripples throughout the fabric of modern design in the process.

Meticulously crafted from a blend of teak and powder-coated steel, the collection was influenced by the ever-encroaching natural landscapes of Norway, resulting in a series intrinsically linked to the design duo’s Nordic roots. Guided by their Scandinavian heritage and an affinity for natural materials, Norwegian design duo Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll have established a profoundly intuitive practice. From the early sketches to the final product, every step in the creation of a new design is thoughtfully considered. Based in Oslo, Anderssen & Voll have been instrumental in putting Norway on the global design map ever since they joined forces in 2009, challenging perceptions of what signifies good design ever since through a series of emotionally-driven works.

Modern in both function and silhouette, Space Copenhagen’s Thorvald series is a profoundly versatile assembly of forms – paying homage to Copenhagen’s neoclassical artist and sculptor, Bertel Thorvaldsen, and the motifs of his eponymous museum. The series is comprised of a side chair, armchair, lounge chair (available both with or without arms), a café and dining table in two sizes, a side table and accompanying seat pads and cushions. Described by Space Copenhagen as “an invitation to enjoy a pause, conversation, drink, or a meal under the open sky”, each form reflects the designers’ intuitive understanding of how objects evoke emotions. Configured for comfort and versatility, Thorvald’s sculptural silhouettes and curated colour palette of Warm Black, Bronze Green or Ivory allow the pieces to effortlessly intermingle with their surroundings.

Renowned for his signature minimalism, Hee Welling’s Rely outdoor series represents his legacy of melding simplicity with practicality. Comprised of a chair and two café tables configured for outdoor use, Rely’s understated appearance belies the thorough consideration that has been given to its ergonomic design. Crafted from postconsumer recycled plastic, compact laminate and steel, the collection’s sleek and minimalist aesthetic is underpinned by a consideration for the environmental impact of each element. This ethos has extended to all aspects of the collection including its construction which can be dismantled so that, if needed, parts can be fixed and replaced, and therefore its lifespan extended. Additional UV protection reduces bleaching when exposed to sunlight, while a small hole in the seat of the chair allows water to escape during rain showers.

Denoted by an honest minimalism, Hee Welling’s practice is underpinned by a belief in function as the cornerstone of good design. Every form created by the Copenhagen-based designer is united by a distinctive visual identity, as he focuses on clean lines and simple silhouettes. Welling works with a wide array of materials and processes, including wood and metals, alongside non-natural elements like recycled plastic. While decidedly modern in its aesthetic identity, his work is firmly situated within the broader context of the Scandinavian design tradition.

The use of powder-coated steel as a starting point for each outdoor collection has allowed us to create a series of elegant designs with lasting solidity. The durability of the material, which resists weather and corrosion, coupled with its pliability, has made it possible to create precise, intricate and fluid-like forms that closely resemble the original sketches of each design and stand the test of time.
While the detail of the metalwork is the focal point of the Thorvald, teak introduces an additional layer of warmth to Ville and the terrace designs of the RFH collection, bringing a softer character to their otherwise bold forms. A natural and robust material, teak ages over time, fading to a graceful silver patina without compromising the strength or integrity of the design. The Ville chairs’ seat and backrest, reminiscent of a classic textile furniture webbing, have been adapted to outdoor environments through the intentional use of polyester – a fabric which intuitively moulds to the individual’s body and can withstand the elements. Every unique composition of materials found throughout our outdoor collections has been carefully crafted with durability and long-term wear in mind.
TEAK
As teak is a natural material, it can exhibit variations in both colour and texture from piece to piece. The teak used in both the Ville and RFH collections is untreated and therefore will develop a silver-grey patina over time. This hardwood possesses natural oils and tight grain patterns that are resistant to rot and decay, making it an ideal choice for outdoor furniture.
CARE & CLEANING
To clean both treated and untreated teak, begin by brushing or dusting off any debris with a soft, dry cloth. Next, wipe the surface using another soft cloth or sponge wrung in a mild cleaning solution. Ensure no soapy residue remains on the teak before leaving to dry naturally or wiping down.
Untreated teak will age gracefully over time, fading in colour to a silver grey when left among the natural elements. However, if you wish to preserve or enhance the original colour of the teak, simply apply a suitable furniture oil regularly. It is also possible to sand the wood to restore its original colour if desired. Exposure to the elements may cause minor cracks and veins to rise in the products, but this will not affect overall design or durability. During winter we recommend storing your furniture in an unheated shelter and to protect it from water exposure to prevent discolouration.

Each one of our outdoor collections utilises the robust element of powder-coated steel. Powder coating is a safe, dry finishing process that uses finely ground particles of pigment and resin to create a protective finish. Powder coating adds to the steel’s durability, helping it to withstand damages better and last longer, and provides an additional protective barrier that helps prevent corrosion.
CARE & CLEANING
Because of its durability and resistance to abrasion and corrosion, powder-coated steel requires little to no maintenance. Wipe the furniture with a soft cloth wrung in warm water and a mild detergent. To avoid damaging the surface, do not use harsh or abrasive chemicals. After cleaning, rinse with water to remove any residue and ensure the furniture is completely dry to prevent water spots.
The seat and back of the Ville chairs are made of polyester webbing. Polyester is a synthetic textile and polymer known for its durability and versatility. Reliable and easy to work with, its moisture-wicking properties and relative resistance to fading make it a practical material to use in outdoor furniture.
CARE & CLEANING
To avoid collecting dust and debris in between the polyester webbing, dust or vacuum frequently. Gently blot any spots or stains with a clean, damp cloth or sponge wrung in water and a mild cleaning solution. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners or excessive moisture, as they can damage the webbing. While polyester is known to be highly fade-resistant, we always advise against prolonged exposure to heat and direct sunlight and to store in a cool, dry place when not in use. Please note that if used frequently, over time the webbing’s tension may loosen slightly.
PLASTIC
Following the principles of circular design, recycled post-consumer plastic is sourced from waste which has been granulated before being formulated for injection moulding. This process not only reduces the amount of plastic waste in circulation but provides a strong and ergonomically formed base from which the Rely series is created.
CARE & CLEANING
The recycled plastic that has been used for the outdoor Rely chairs is highly durable and has been specially formulated to include additional UV protection to reduce bleaching from exposure to sunlight. For daily cleaning it is recommended to use a soft cloth wrung in a mild solution of lukewarm water and a universal cleaning detergent. After cleaning, wipe with a soft, dry cloth.
A defining element of both the RFH and Rely collections, compact laminate is characterised by an easy to maintain surface as well as robust UV and weather resistance. A hardwearing material suited to most outdoor environments, compact laminate lends itself to a range of forms and functions with the promise of long-term durability.
CARE & CLEANING
Due to its highly durable material composition, compact laminate can be cleaned and maintained with ease. For daily care, wipe the furniture with a soft cloth wrung in a mild solution of warm water and a mild detergent. To avoid damaging the surface, do not use any harsh or abrasive chemicals. After cleaning, wipe with a clean, dry cloth uniformly in one direction to avoid smearing or streaks.
The seat pads and cushions for the Thorvald, Ville and RFH Terrace collections are all made from a selection of cutting edge acrylic based textiles. Breathable and comfortable in outdoor use, they are also durable and practical. The fibres are resistant to discolouration caused by UV rays, water repellent, stain proof and protected against mould and mildew, as well as easy to clean. The textiles do not contain harmful chemicals as verified by and Greenguard Gold.
Heritage Papyrus and Heritage Char:
Made from up to 50% recycled fibre, Heritage Papyrus and Heritage Char are fabrics that have been chosen to act as complementary additions to our outdoor ranges and the environments in which they are situated. Neutral in tone with subtle variations in colour, the two fabrics offer a discernible feeling of comfort that works to accentuate the form and function of each outdoor design.
Marquetry Bora:
Marquetry Bora is an option for those looking to introduce a pattern into their outdoor space. Featuring a repeating motif which adds a touch of colour to our outdoor ranges, the fabric’s design was chosen for its timeless appeal and its ability to work in tandem with both the furniture and our other fabric selection, Heritage Papyrus and Heritage Char.
CARE & CLEANING
Spills should be blotted with a clean, dry cloth, please avoid rubbing the spill site. Oil based spills may be treated with corn starch to absorb the excess substance, which should afterwards be removed with a straight edge tool. Regular cleaning includes using a mild solution of soap and water, thoroughly rinsing off, then air drying.
