Throughout the year, we highlight residents at our homes and share a bit about their life. This month, we are shining a light on Andrews of Stratford resident Ewen Stewart.

Ewen Stewart has left his mark on Prince Edward Island.

Ewen, now a resident at Andrews of Stratford, is an accomplished distance runner, who was instrumental in organizing the first marathon in P E I

He’s competed in hundreds of races, many for local charities, as well as the esteemed Boston Marathon His longtime running club, The P E I Roadrunners, named the Ewen Stewart Inspirational Runner of the Year Award after him and give it out annually to a runner who lives up to Ewen’s stalwart reputation He was also an avid cyclist, biking up to 35 kilometres daily

In addition to his many accomplishments as a runner, he was a longtime advocate and supporter of the Alzheimer Society of P E I In 2012, he was awarded the Danny Murphy Leadership Award, an annual award that recognizes a person or organization that exemplifies excellence in person-centered care while promoting programs and services for all those affected by Alzheimer disease and related dementias.

Ewen also holds the provincial record for most blood donations at 1,162. He gave his final donation in 2023 at age 90.

Ewen, you are an inspiration to us all and we are proud to have you as part of our Andrews family!

Everything is waking up and coming to life. The first flowers are daffodils and then the robins and birds come. The sunshine, the warmth of it, that lovely sun. - Camilla MacPhee

I enjoy watching things grow And mostly of every spring when the flowers and things come up in the woods, there’s all kinds of different flowers that grow in the woods. They just multiply, they’re beautiful. - Nancy Bourque

We asked. . .

residents what they enjoy or look forward to most about spring.

I always had a garden. We did a vegetable garden. We always put a few potatoes in and beets, loved beets, that’s one of our favourites. We put a fairly good variety in. - Betty Madren

I don’t like the snow so I’m glad that the snow is gone. I just like it when it’s fresh. - Mary Ratelle

The sun. It’s a good colour yellow. I like the park and the flowers that grow up in front of the houses. - Laszlo Koleszar

We

asked. . .

residents what they enjoy or look forward to most about spring.

I like to see more sunshine and the snow leaving. I like to see the grass start to become greener and the flowers blossoming. I’m addicted to flowers, I think. You can get outside and sit in the sun if it’s not to hot. You don’t have to worry about whether you have a jacket. - Debra Gallant

The coming of the pretty flowers, the warm weather. We always had a garden home. - Jean Profitt

The weather. It’s nice out, I get out more often. I do a lot more walking. I’ll go from here up to the Wal-Mart. I’ll do that two times a day. - Marvin MacEwen

I enjoy the new growth of the flowers, the trees sprouting all the leaves, the birds coming back and going to sleep at night and listening to the birds singing I love the spring. - Lori Henderson

Making flower beds I love tulips, daffoldils, geraniums. I grew up doing that with my mom in Morell. - Veronica MacDermid
